3,085 installs squeezed into #8 on Turkey's Top Grossing: how a number-verification app charted, and why it's not worth copying
What it is A one-time disposable phone number app that receives verification codes. It buys from the wholesale SMS platform Hero-SMS and resells credit packs in the store at a markup of $4.99–$54.99.
Why it took off Demand for SMS verification is ready-made and users pay on the spot. Turkey's Play Top Grossing chart has a low bar, and a few thousand installs is enough. Add a second launch from the same team, keyword-targeted search ads, and a name that rides on the established "SMS Virtual" with 3.71M installs.
C How you could follow it Don't build number verification itself. Take the structure: a wholesale API, a store-facing shell, credit packs, and search-ad attribution to track payback. Pick a country where the paid bar is low, and swap in per-order digital goods like eSIMs or proxy IPs.
- Data (updated daily) · first launch 2026-08-22 · 11-07 installs 3,121
Android · Total installs worldwide Data 2026-11-02 → 2026-11-07 (6 days, 6 observations). Google's detail page only refreshes install counts every other day, so a flat day doesn't mean nobody installed.
A Turkish prepaid-card seller set up a UK company and packaged a wholesale verification-number platform into an app, selling credit packs at $4.99–$54.99. With about three thousand installs, it reached #8 on Turkey's Google Play Communication Top Grossing chart. Below: what it actually sells, why the chart was so easy to climb, how it gets users, and why you probably shouldn't copy it.
The day of Nov 4
On Nov 4, 2026, an app called "SMSVirtual - Virtual Number" on Google Play hit #8 on Turkey's Communication Top Grossing chart, up from #11 two days earlier. That day its cumulative global installs were 3,085, with no change from the day before (Google Play installs, 11-04). By 11-06 it had also climbed from #193 to #142 on Turkey's overall Top Grossing chart.
An app with no ratings, no reviews, and only twenty or thirty new installs a day was earning money alongside older products with millions of installs. The developer is EPINKO LIMITED, and the first store listing went live in Aug 2026, 22.
What it sells
A disposable phone number for receiving verification codes. People sign up for WhatsApp, Telegram, Instagram, and foreign services that require a phone number, and they buy one here if they don't want to use their own or can't register with it. The flow is the standard three steps: pick a service, pick a country, wait for the SMS. The homepage lists three selling points: "No code in 17 minutes, balance refunded", "Bank cards via 3D Secure", and "Crypto top-ups get a 10% bonus". It offers 812 services (smsvirtual.pro, 11-06).
The numbers aren't its own. Its privacy policy names the upstream supplier as Hero-SMS, a wholesale verification platform that says it took over the SMS-Activate inventory, covers 180+ countries, and openly recruits resellers. The service icons on the site are named after the upstream provider, such as hero-tg and hero-wa. The backend is Firebase, and in-app purchases go through RevenueCat. Put simply, it's a shell: buy a verification code at wholesale, mark it up through credit packs in the store, and the markup is where the revenue comes from.
Who built it: the same team doing it a second time
epinko.com is a game prepaid-card seller in Adana, Turkey. Since 2021 it has sold E-Pins, CD keys, and in-game currency, and claims more than 1M sales. It was already running digital micro-goods with local payments.
In January 2026, its Turkish entity had already shipped a nearly identical app called "SMSVia" on Google Play and the App Store. The iOS version reached #47 on Latvia's Top Grossing category chart. In May 8, it registered the UK company EPINKO LIMITED at a virtual office address in London (Companies House no. 17207830). In August, the new entity launched the same product under a new brand: SMSVirtual on Android and SMS Virtual on iOS.
Same team, new company, new brand, second launch of the same type of product. It occupies more store slots and spreads the risk of removal (inference).
Why three thousand installs were enough to chart
Look at the install trend: in early September it added roughly 117 a day, and by late October only 18–36 (a third-party estimate of the curve since launch). New installs kept falling while its rank kept rising. That doesn't mean it got popular. Two things are going on:
First, the bar on Turkey's chart is low. The lira has depreciated, the Play paid market is small, and a few thousand installs plus a handful of heavy spenders is enough to reach #8 in Communication. It also ranks #77–#84 on the Communication Top Grossing charts in 12 other countries, but those positions are near the bottom and don't say much.
Second, verification apps naturally have few installs and heavy spending. People who need a code pay right away, a few dollars per order, with no retention needed. Among the top 25 on Turkey's Communication Top Grossing chart, verification and virtual-number apps take up a large share (Google Play, 11-06):
| App | Total installs | Turkey Communication Top Grossing |
|---|---|---|
| Telicall | 2.09M | #10 |
| VirtuNum - Sanal Numara | 6.74M | #11 |
| GetCode | 3.75M | #13 |
| VSim: Sanal Numara & SMS Onay | 2.68M | #15 |
| 2nd Line | 5.2M | #17 |
| 2Number | 4.4M | #20 |
| TalkU | 25.7M | #25 |
| SMSVirtual | 3,121 | #8 |
So "low installs, high rank" here mostly reflects a low bar, not high revenue. Its monthly revenue is likely in the low thousands of dollars (estimate, unverified).
Where users come from
I searched around, and the verifiable channels are all in the store and on the website. Social media shows nothing: searching "smsvirtual" on TikTok only returns other sellers' videos, and in the last 30 days there were 0 posts on X mentioning it or SMSVia.
- Store search ads. The privacy policy spells it out: on iOS it uses Apple Search Ads attribution to capture campaign, ad group, keyword, and country; on Android it uses the install referrer to match its own ads; and RevenueCat is also wired for attribution so each payment can be tied to a specific keyword. This setup means it buys traffic by keyword and tracks payback. How much it spends isn't visible from outside.
- A name that rides on a big brand. On Google Play there is "SMS Virtual - Receive SMS" (Tecrow Apps, website smsvirtual.org), listed in 2023 with 3.71M installs. epinko's app is called SMSVirtual, with the website smsvirtual.pro. People searching "sms virtual" may be partly routed to it. Whether that's intentional, or how much traffic it brings, isn't known.
- Bilingual site + web top-ups. smsvirtual.pro has English and Turkish landing pages (sanal-telefon-numarasi, sanal-numara-kiralama). In Oct 26 it published several blog posts at once: how to verify on Instagram, what to do when no code arrives, and the difference between burner numbers and virtual numbers. Web payments accept cards and crypto, which avoids the store's 15–30% commission.
- Referral credits. The privacy policy mentions credits, referrals, and rewards, and it uses device fingerprinting to prevent abuse.
How it differs from others
On the product itself, there's almost nothing different. The numbers come from the same wholesale pool, the flow is standard, and the only distinctions it can claim are "no account registration", "an extra disposable email", and "sold as credit packs, not subscriptions". Its edge is all in distribution and packaging: a brand portfolio, search ads, a near-identical name to a big brand, and web payments that skip the commission. Those are what get it onto the charts.
Competition has two layers. Direct rivals are the verification apps listed above, plus cheaper sites like Hero-SMS, 5sim, and OnlineSim, and free verification sites that publish numbers and often get blocked. Adjacent are the long-term second-number apps TextNow, TextMe (62M installs), Dingtone (53M), and TalkU, which sell subscriptions and support calling. On the big-platform side, Google Voice is limited to the US, and Apple's Hide My Email doesn't cover phone numbers, so no one is serving this niche right now.
If it were you
C: a playbook worth learning, but copying it isn't worth it. This is an old, crowded category. The upstream wholesale platforms openly recruit resellers, so anyone can plug in and you get the same inventory as everyone else. It is itself a follower, and it's following for the second time.
Who it suits: Teams already experienced with local payments and digital micro-goods (like epinko, which already sold prepaid cards), with search-ad buying capability, who want an extra store slot in a country with a low paid bar. For them it's a product line with very low marginal cost.
Who it doesn't suit: Indie developers who want to win on product experience (there's no product difference to build on here); anyone who can't run Apple Search Ads or Google App campaigns; anyone who can't tolerate the app being removed at any time. Tecrow's other similar app disappeared from Google Play in February 2026. Verification numbers are often used for bulk account registration, which violates platform terms, and stores are getting stricter.
How to do it (if you still want to): Don't build number verification itself. Take the structure: find a per-order digital product with a wholesale API (eSIM data packs, proxy IPs, gift cards), pick a country where local-language offerings are weak and the Play Top Grossing bar is low, price through a store shell plus credit packs, and add card and crypto top-ups on the web.
How to acquire users: Copy its setup. On day one, connect Apple Search Ads attribution and RevenueCat, buy traffic on local-language keywords like "sanal numara", and work backward from per-order margin to set bids. At the same time, build a local-language landing page and a few "no code received, what now" style search articles.
Is there a window: No window to rush for. The category has been crowded for several years. If you do try it, first test one country with under $500 in search ads. If you can't reach positive payback within two weeks, stop.
What would mean you got it wrong: ① SMSVirtual stays in the top 10 of Turkey's Communication Top Grossing for over a month while installs keep falling. That would mean repeat purchases from existing users bring in more than expected, so unit price and retention deserve a fresh look. ② epinko launches a third or fourth similar brand, which would show the shell model really pays and is worth another look. ③ The reverse: SMSVirtual or SMSVia is removed from Google Play. That would mean this path is closing.

SMSVirtual - Virtual Number (com.smsvirtual.app) research report
Channel: Google Play; developer EPINKO LIMITED; store launch 2026-08-22; research date 2026-11-06
Bottom line
This is the second "SMS verification" app from epinko, a Turkish game top-up card seller (the first is SMSVia from 2026-01). It wraps the wholesale verification-number platform Hero-SMS in a storefront and sells number credit packs ($4.99–$54.99). The bar for Turkey's top charts is low, and verification-number demand naturally means "few installs, heavy spending", so 3 thousand installs is enough to reach #8 on Turkey's Communication Top Grossing chart. It got there through three things: the team had already built the same thing once, store search ad buys, and a name nearly identical to Tecrow's long-running 3.7M-install "SMS Virtual" (apparently piggybacking on it). The product itself has no differentiation.
1. How to read the data
- Installs: 3,121 cumulative worldwide (googleplay library 2026-11-06). Going by AppstoreSpy's estimated curve since launch: 09-12 was 979,10-05, then 2,184,11-04, then 3,121. Daily installs fell from about 117/day in early September to 18–36/day by late October (googleplay library app_day_ext). New installs keep declining and are not accelerating.
- Charts: on Turkey's COMMUNICATION Top Grossing chart it climbed from #11-02 at 11 to #11-04 and then #8. On Turkey's overall Top Grossing chart it hit #11-03 and #193,11-06 at #142 (googleplay library chart_rank). It is also in the Communication Top Grossing top 77–84 in 12 other countries, but those ranks are likely near the tail of category charts (a very low bar, or the same aggregated chart), so they say little.
- In the top 25 of Turkey's Communication Top Grossing chart, virtual-number and verification apps take up a large share: Telicall (2.09M installs, #10), VirtuNum (6.7M, #11), GetCode (3.7M, #13), VSim (2.7M, #15), 2nd Line (5.2M, #17), 2Number (4.4M, #20), and TalkU 2nd Phone Number (25.7M, #25) (googleplay library 2026-11-06). Turkey is clearly a strong paying market for this category, and reaching #8 on the Communication chart only takes a few thousand installs and a small group of heavy spenders.
- In-app purchases: one tier at $4.99–$54.99 (data card). No ratings, no reviews.
2. Who it is: epinko's verification-number lineup
- EPINKO LIMITED: a UK company, registration number 17207830,2026-05-08, registered at a Brayford Square, London virtual office, with SIC codes for online retail and software development (Companies House).
- Parent: epinko.com, which has sold game top-up cards in Turkey (E-Pin, CD Keys, in-game currency) since 2021 and claims over 1M sales. The Turkish entity is in Adana (epinko.com/hakkimizda, sikayetvar). It has always been about digital micro-goods with local payment methods.
- Another app from the same team: the Google Play developer "EPİNKO TEKNOLOJİ LİMİTED ŞİRKETİ" also publishes Virtual Phone Number - SMSVia (com.smsvia.app, 3.9 rating) and ScentSnap (AI perfume identification). On the App Store, Epinko Teknoloji has SMSVia: Virtual Number & OTP (2026-01-12, which reached #47 in Latvia's Top Grossing category), Truth or Dare, AutoClicker, and Signature Maker. EPİNKO LİMİTED publishes SMS Virtual - Virtual Number (iOS id 6799785867,2026-08-24) (appstore library). Conclusion: the same team, with a different company entity and a different brand, is launching the same category again, using a small-account / multi-brand approach.
- Supply: the privacy policy says the upstream telecom supplier is Hero-SMS, the backend runs on Firebase, and in-app purchases go through RevenueCat (smsvirtual.pro/privacy.html, 2026-08-21 version). Hero-SMS is a wholesale verification-number platform that says it took over SMS-Activate's inventory, covers 180+ countries, publicly recruits resellers, and offers an API (hero-sms.com). SMSVirtual is therefore a "resale shell": it buys single verification codes wholesale and sells credit packs in the store at a markup. Most of the revenue is the markup.
3. Where users came from (growth tactics)
| Channel | Evidence | Confirmed? |
|---|---|---|
| Store search ads (Apple Search Ads / Google App Campaigns) | The privacy policy specifically states that on iOS it uses Apple Search Ads attribution tokens to get campaign, ad group, keyword and country; on Android it uses the install referrer to identify its own ads; and RevenueCat is also wired to attribution tokens so payments can be matched to specific ads. This setup is what you'd build to buy by keyword and calculate ROI from recovered spend. | Ad-buying and attribution setup confirmed; spend scale not verified |
| Store search / name piggybacking | The names "SMSVirtual / SMS Virtual" are nearly identical to Tecrow Apps' "SMS Virtual - Receive SMS" (online.smsvirtual.app, listed 2023, 3.71M installs, googleplay library). Tecrow's website is smsvirtual.org, while epinko uses smsvirtual.pro. Tecrow's other app, co.app.smsvirtual, was already removed from the store in 2026-02 (AppBrain). People searching "sms virtual" are likely being diverted to this app. | The name collision is a fact; whether it was deliberate and how much traffic it brings is unverified |
| SEO site | smsvirtual.pro has English / Turkish bilingual landing pages (sanal-telefon-numarasi, sanal-numara-kiralama). The blog published several posts at once 2026-10-26 (Instagram verification, not receiving codes, burner comparisons), with about 26 URLs site-wide. The web store accepts 3D Secure card payments and crypto top-ups with a 10% bonus, which avoids the store's commission. | Existence confirmed; traffic not verified |
| Referrals / reward points | The privacy policy mentions "claim credits, referrals or rewards", with device fingerprinting against abuse | Mechanism confirmed |
| TikTok / X / Reddit | A TikHub search for "smsvirtual" only returns other brands such as SMSFAST; x-radar shows 0 mention(s) each for smsvirtual / smsvia over 30 days | None found |
| Cross-promotion from existing users | Unclear whether SMSVia users were funneled here | Not verified |
4. Competitors
This is an old, crowded category in two groups:
- Verification / one-time codes (closest to this app): SMS Virtual (Tecrow, 3.7M), GetCode (3.7M, 2023), VirtuNum (6.7M, 2023), VSim (2.7M), Turkish local sites such as SMS Onay: Sanal Numara and OnayTR / SMSONAYY; upstream wholesale platforms Hero-SMS, the successor to SMS-Activate, 5sim, and OnlineSim; plus free receive-code sites (receive-smss.com) and VeePN's free online-sms.
- Second number / long-term virtual number: TextNow, 2ndLine, TextMe (62M), Dingtone (53M), TalkU (25.7M), Numero (23.5M), Hushed, Burner, 2Number (4.4M), and Telicall (2.1M).
Big players: Google Voice (US only) and Apple's "Hide My Email" only covers email, not phone numbers.
Compared with these, SMSVirtual uses the same wholesale inventory, and its interface and flow (choose service → choose country → receive code → automatic credit refund if no code arrives) are industry standard. The only differences it can point to are: no account registration (one anonymous UUID per device), a disposable email included, and credit packs instead of subscriptions. None of these are real differentiation.
5. Why it charted
- Demand exists and willingness to pay is high: signing up for WhatsApp / Telegram / social apps / betting / overseas services requires a phone number. A verification code costs a few dollars, buyers pay on the spot, and no retention work is needed. Turkey's Communication Top Grossing chart being occupied by a string of verification apps is the evidence.
- Low bar on Turkey's charts: the lira has depreciated, the Play spending pool is small, and a few thousand installs plus a few heavy spenders can reach #8 on Communication Top Grossing. "Low installs, high revenue" here mostly means the bar is low, not that revenue is large.
- The team is doing it for the second time: SMSVia already ran the same thing in 2026-01. The parent company already sells digital micro-goods like game cards and understands Turkish paying users. Opening a new UK entity and a new brand most likely spreads the risk of storefront holds and takedowns and claims more store slots.
- Ad return is easy to calculate: Apple Search Ads / Google attribution plus RevenueCat reconciliation makes it simple to buy "virtual number / sanal numara" by keyword. Gross margin per order is high, so ROI can be read the same day.
- Name close to a big brand: nearly the same name as the 3.7M-install "SMS Virtual", so some people searching for it tap this app by mistake.
6. Differentiation
Essentially none. The numbers come from Hero-SMS's wholesale pool, and the features are industry standard. What sets it apart is distribution and packaging: a multi-brand portfolio, search ads, a near-identical name to a big brand, web payments that avoid the commission, and credit-pack pricing. Those explain why it charts, not the product itself.
7. How visible it is
Few people know about it yet: no public revenue (no TrustMRR, no founder posts), 0 discussions on X, and no press coverage. The category itself is a red ocean, though: Turkey's charts already have 7+ similar apps, and upstream Hero-SMS is still publicly recruiting resellers. Copycats are not a concern, since this app is itself a copycat and many teams have been doing the same thing.
8. What to borrow
- The "wholesale API + store shell + credit packs" resale model: find a pay-per-use digital product with a wholesale upstream (verification numbers, eSIMs, proxy IPs), list it in a country with a low spending bar, buy keywords with search ads, and reconcile recovered spend with RevenueCat attribution.
- A single team runs multiple brands and entities, spreading the risk of takedowns and taking more search slots.
- Offering crypto / card top-ups on the web store avoids the 15–30% store commission.
- Risk: verification numbers are often used for bulk account creation, which violates platform terms. Google Play is also getting stricter with these apps (Tecrow's older package, 2026-02, was removed).
9. Uncertain
- Actual revenue is unknown. The monthly revenue behind Turkey's #8 Communication ranking is unverified; a guess of a few thousand dollars a month is also unverified.
- How much was spent on search ads and whether that is the main channel; SMSVia's install and revenue scale (not in our Play library).
- Whether the name overlap with "SMS Virtual" was deliberate and whether it has brought meaningful traffic.
- New installs are declining while the chart rank is climbing. This may be driven by repeat purchases and large credit packs, or by heavier ad spend in early November. Uncertain.
