# How a "just tells you it's time to update" app squeezed into #9 on the South Korean Tools bestseller chart

**What it is** An Android tool that lists which apps on your phone need updating, then sends you to the Play Store to tap update, bundled with battery and sensor tests, earning from ads and a $19.99 in-app purchase.

**Why it took off** It swapped in the Korean title "소프트웨어 업데이트" to catch searches from people who don't know how to use their phone, climbed a very low-barrier Korean Tools bestseller chart, and rode the update wave Samsung pushed in Korea from One UI 9 in September.

**C** **How you could follow** Don't build another update checker; copy the playbook: find small-country category bestseller charts with high willingness to pay and low competition, use the system terms locals search for in your title, and watch for major vendor releases to launch ahead.

Grade C: the playbook is worth learning, but the category is already crowded with identical apps on the same chart, the features are fully covered by the built-in system updater, it charges by exploiting information gaps, and the window is tied to a one-off update season, so chasing it directly isn't worth it. Still little known

An Android tool on Google Play called "Software Update: App Update" lists which apps on your phone need updating, then sends you to the Play Store to tap "Update", which the system can already do itself. It comes from a small studio in Pakistan. Less than two months after launch it had 110k installs, and in Nov 6 it entered the Korean Play "Tools" bestseller chart at #9. The product has nothing new; it won on three distribution moves: a Korean name, a low-barrier chart, and timing with Samsung's system update season. The playbook is worth learning, but this category is already packed with copies.

### One "좋아요", 17 people found it helpful

In Oct 31, a Korean user named 이만형 left a review that said only "좋아요" (good). By Nov 6, the review had 17 "helpful" votes, making it the top review on its Korean page; the developer replied in Nov 2 with "감사합니다 5 star review! 😊". The Korean page has 4.6 stars and 121 reviews (Google Play Korea, 11-06).

Korean reviews for apps in this category all read about the same. The rival "Software Updater" (SaverHub Apps), launched two and a half months earlier and doing exactly the same thing, has these reviews with the most "helpful" votes: "이앱 가장 싫어요" (I hate this app most, 1 stars, 30 helpful), "처음인지라 어렵습니다" (First time, it's hard, 2 stars), "모르겠어요" (Don't know, 5 stars).

These reviews make clear who the users are: people who aren't good with phones and who hear they need to update but can't find where. The whole piece is about how to get in front of these people in the search box first.

### What it is

A standard "software update check" Android tool. You open it, tap "Check for updates", it scans installed apps, games, and system apps, lists which have new versions, then jumps to the Play Store so you update yourself. It also adds a row of phone utilities: bulk uninstall, usage time stats, device info, battery status, screen/vibration/flashlight/speaker tests, and touch dead-zone detection.

Its own Korean description candidly says in the final paragraph: "This app only detects and displays pending updates and device info. It does not install or auto-update apps; all updates must be completed by the user through the Play Store."

- Developer: Media Tech Studioz, with a Bahawalpur, Pakistan address listed on the store page; contact person Haroon Rashid. The same account also has football scores, an IPTV player, AI voice changer, video editor, cloud backup, and other apps, totaling about 12M installs (Google Play, 11-06).

- Monetization: ads + in-app purchases; the US store page lists "$19.99 per item". Whether it's a weekly subscription, lifetime membership, or ad removal can't be seen from outside.

- Korean name: "소프트웨어 업데이트: 휴대전화 업데이트" (Software update: phone update), the whole description is in Korean.

### Numbers: it ignited at the end of September and was still growing in November.

The store lists the launch date as 10-14, but third-party estimates show sporadic installs starting Sep 8, with only a few dozen cumulative by late September (AppstoreSpy estimate). It took off from Sep 29, several hundred a day; mid-October it reached two or three thousand a day; late October it reached four to ten thousand a day (estimate).

| Date | Total installs | Score |
|---|---|---|
| 10-12 | About 14k (estimated) | — |
| 10-27 | About 65k (estimated) | — |
| 10-29 | 65,197 | 49 |
| 11-03 | 100,848 | 89 |
| 11-06 | 112,199 | 117 |

In the last 7 days, 47k new installs, though after Nov 4 it slowed to about 5–6 thousand a day (Google Play installs, 11-06).

More importantly, the chart. It has never entered any country's overall chart, but it kept climbing the Korean "Tools" bestseller chart: 10-29 #18 → 11-01 #14 → 11-05 #11 → 11-06 #9. It also ranked #48 on the Japanese "Tools" bestseller chart and #47 on the Korean "Tools" free chart, with Canada and Australia free charts in the hundreds.

### Why Korea

**South Korea's tools Top Grossing chart is easy to crack.** Same chart on Nov 6: the top three are real products like Genspark, NordVPN, Plaud. Ranks 4–6 are reskinned "recover deleted messages/photos" tools, #8 is the SaverHub "Software Updater" mentioned earlier, and #9 is this app. Ranks 8–10 on the chart need very little revenue (inferred), and they're already held by a cluster of South Asian studios running a "tool template + high-priced in-app purchases" model. The same app in India would chart at best around #100–200. Korea has fewer users, but they pay.

**The Korean name just copies the system term.** "소프트웨어 업데이트" (software update) is the name of the menu in Samsung phone settings. Someone who isn't very good with their phone searches this term on Play and gets a row of look-alike apps, not the button in settings. SaverHub uses nearly the same Korean title. This is the publicly known playbook in this niche.

**The timing lines up with Samsung's update season.** Samsung One UI 9 began rolling out in Korea from Sep 2026 16 on S26 first, then in batches to S25, Fold7 and other models (namu.wiki, Samsung community, Naver blogs). This app started growing in Sep 29, right in the middle of that rollout. Whether it's causal can't be confirmed, but searches like "my phone needs an update, how do I update it?" peaked in those weeks, which is a reasonable inference.

**Paid acquisition is possibly involved too.** The install curve jumps in steps (hundreds → a thousand or two → three thousand → ten thousand), which looks like budget being increased (inferred). I didn't find it in the public ad libraries of Meta or Google, but not finding it doesn't mean it isn't running. Other apps under the same developer account may be cross-promoting it (inferred).

No social platform is pushing it: searching TikTok for "software update app android" returns only videos showing how to use the built-in system update; nobody on X, Reddit, or in the media mentions it. Its volume comes only from the stores.

### Who it's competing with: an identical row of apps

"Software Update / Update All Apps" is a very old category on Play, almost entirely template products from Pakistani and Indian studios.

| App | Developer | Launched | Cumulative installs (11-06) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Update Software - Apps Updater | White Stack Devs | 2022-11 | 7.76M | Old-timer, mostly India |
| Software Update : Update Apps | Squad Apps Studio | 2024-02 | 7.44M | Big volume, can't break into Top Grossing |
| Software Update: App Update | Squad Apps Studio | 2024-04 | 7.31M | Name nearly identical to this app, package name almost the same |
| Software Update - App Updates | Apps Resort | 2026-06 | 3.01M | Also targets Korea, best Top Grossing rank #32 |
| Software Updater: Update Apps | SaverHub Apps | 2026-07 | 120k | Closest rival, same Korean title, Korea tools Top Grossing #8 |
| Software Update : Phone Update | AZ Dev Spot | 2021-07 | 1.29M | Builds volume through Top Free charts in places like South Africa |
| Built into the system | Google Play / Samsung Settings → Software Update | — | All Android phones | Free, and it actually updates |

In what it does, it's no different from these rivals; even the name collides with Squad Apps Studio's. The only real competitor is the built-in button in the system.

### How many people know about it

Almost nobody outside knows about it: no media coverage, no discussion on X or Reddit, revenue not disclosed; it only shows up on APK mirror sites and data sites. But within the circle of South Asian studios that make Play tool templates, "localized title + chasing Top Grossing charts in small countries + high-priced IAP" is a playbook everyone uses. The same Korean chart already has this app, SaverHub and Apps Resort, plus a row of "recover deleted messages" apps.

### If it were you

**Verdict (C):** There's one tactic worth learning, but don't copy this exact app. The category's features fully overlap with what the system already provides, identical apps are already crowded onto the same chart, and the revenue depends on users not knowing better. Policy risk and refund risk are both high, and it won't last.

**Who it suits:** teams already building Play tool apps, with existing templates, who know ASO and can run small paid acquisition budgets. Use it as a sample of the tactic: find small-country category charts where the bar is low and users pay, then swap in the system-level keywords locals actually search for.

**Who it doesn't suit:** indie developers who want to build a product with long-term value; anyone uncomfortable with a model that makes $19.99 from an information gap; anyone without a stable of Play developer accounts who fears takedowns. Google Play is cracking down harder on "misleading claims" and "functionality that doesn't match the description," and takedowns of similar apps are the norm.

**How to do it:** Don't build another "software update checker." Learn the method instead: pick markets like Korea, Japan, Taiwan or the Nordics, where willingness to pay is high and local developers are few. Go through their Play "Tools" Top Grossing charts at ranks 8–20, see which are reskins of templates (that's the bar). Then find a need locals often search for but big companies haven't done well (for example "phone health check", "clear storage" or "understand your settings" for older users), and use a native-quality title and screenshots to capture that search term. If you want to make money, spell out in the in-app purchase what it is and what you get.

**How to get users:** Mainly store search, with the title using the exact term from the system menu. When growth starts, scale up in tiers with Google App Campaigns on a small budget (inferred to be its approach). Watch phone makers' major-version release calendars and list one to two weeks before the rollout starts.

**Act before:** Samsung One UI 9's rollout in Korea should mostly finish on the main models by around year end (inferred); the next window is early 2027, when the new Galaxy S launches and newer versions roll out after it. If you miss it, you wait for the next one.

**Signs you've misread it:** ① It drops out of the top 30 Korea tools Top Grossing before late November, meaning what's propping it up is a one-time update season, not steady demand. ② Google Play takes it down or it gets renamed; the policy risk on this path is closer than it looks. ③ Conversely, if it still holds the top 15 in December and its Japan Top Grossing rank keeps climbing, it means "small-country tools Top Grossing charts" can fit newcomers better than they appear, and it's worth seriously looking for the next category.

Where users come from

- **Verified** **Play store search (Korean ASO)** : Korean-store title "소프트웨어 업데이트: 휴대전화 업데이트" plus a fully Korean description; main chart performance is in Korea (TOOLS Top Grossing #9, Top Free #39–53)

- Inferred **System update season (Samsung One UI 9 rollout in Korea)** : One UI 9 rolled out in Korea first from 2026-09-16, expanding to S25 and others by late September; this app started growing in 09-29 (namu.wiki, Naver blogs)

- Inferred **Paid acquisition** : The install curve shows stepped jumps; Meta and Google ad libraries show nothing (they only cover products on the list)

- Inferred **Cross-promotion by the same developer** : Media Tech Studioz has about 9 apps with about 10M installs combined (AppBrain summary)

- Inferred **Influencers / social / media** : TikTok, x-radar and web search turn up no content promoting it

## How Software Update: App Update (Media Tech Studioz) made it onto the charts

> Package name com.softwareupdate.updateallapps.appsupdate.phoneupdates · Google Play · Tools · Research day 2026-11-06. Data sources not specified otherwise come from our googleplay database (app / app_snap / app_day / app_day_ext / chart_rank / app_profile); dates are collection dates.

### Bottom line

This is another reskin by a Pakistani/South Asian tool-app studio built on the mature "Software Update" template. The features (checking which apps need updates plus a set of phone-checking utilities) are almost identical to rivals. It didn't succeed because the product is different; it succeeded because it **made the Korean Play store its main battlefield** : a Korean-localized title "소프트웨어 업데이트: 휴대전화 업데이트" catches search terms, the Korean tools Top Grossing chart has a low bar (rank #9 is enough), and layered on top is the surge in "software update" searches from **Samsung One UI 9 rolling out in Korea from Sep 16** (timing matches, causation not verified), monetized with $19.99 in-app purchases plus ads.

### 1. What the data says

- **The real launch predates the store listing** : the store's first-release date is 2026-10-14 (which resets when info is edited or the market is expanded). Historical data backfilled by AppstoreSpy shows installs from 2026-09-08, with only 52 cumulative installs by late September (AppstoreSpy estimate, `app_day_ext`).

- **Growth inflection points, 2026-09-29** : daily adds jumped from single digits to about 550/day (AppstoreSpy estimate), cumulative 10-05 3,904; from 10-11, 2–3k/day; from 10-21, 4–10k/day. Cumulative: 10-12 14k → 10-20 28k → 10-27 65k → 11-03 101k → 11-06 **112,199** (measured in our database).

- **New installs over 7 days: 47,002** (10-30→11-06, `app_profile.installs_gain_7d`), averaging about 6.7k per day; after 11-04 it slowed to about 2.9k/day (AppstoreSpy average).

- **Ratings** : 117 reviews (11-06), steadily adding +5~11 per day; the US store shows 3.9 stars, the Korean store page shows 4.6 stars (Play page hl=ko&gl=kr, 2026-11-06). Early histogram showed a strict 1:2:3 split like [0,0,8,16,24], [0,0,10,20,30]; then 11-06 suddenly showed 18 one-star reviews. Looks like Google's approximate histogram, possibly with incentivized five-star reviews; unverified.

- **Charts** (chart_rank):
    - Korea TOOLS Top Grossing: 10-29 #18 → 11-01 #14 → 11-05 #11 → **11-06 #9** ;
    - Korea TOOLS Top Free: between ranks 39–53;
    - Japan TOOLS Top Grossing: from 11-04 #55 → 48; Canada TOOLS Top Free #133–154; Australia TOOLS Top Free #198 (11-06).
    - Has never charted on any country's overall chart (free/grossing APPLICATION).

- **Monetization** : "Contains ads + in-app purchases", IAP prices range from $19.99/item (US store details, app_snap). Whether it's weekly subscription, lifetime or ad removal is unverified.

- **The bar on Korea's TOOLS Top Grossing chart** (11-06 on the same chart): ranks 1–3 are Genspark, NordVPN, Plaud; ranks 4–6 are "recover deleted messages/photos" reskin apps; #8 is another company's identical "Software Updater" (SaverHub); #9 is this app. This shows ranks 8–10 on that chart need very little revenue, and they're held by a cluster of South Asian studios running "tool reskin + high-priced IAP."

### 2. Competitors: the same thing, a red ocean, and the same template

"Software Update / Update All Apps" is a very old category on Play, mostly template products from Pakistani and Indian studios. Tool apps with "update" in the name in our database:

| Product | Developer | Launched | Scale (in our database 11-06) | How it differs from the others |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Update Software - Apps Updater | White Stack Devs | 2022-11 | 7.76M installs, +22k in 7 days | Old-timer, mostly India; best IN tools Top Grossing rank 197 |
| Software Update : Update Apps | Squad Apps Studio | 2024-02 | 7.44M, 7 days +52k | Large volume but can't break into Top Grossing; Korea tools Top Free #102 |
| Software Update: App Update | Squad Apps Studio | 2024-04 | 7.31M | **Same name as this product, character for character** ; the package name is nearly identical too (softwareupdate.updatesoftware.updateallapp.phoneupdates.appupdate) |
| Software Update - App Updates | Apps Resort | 2026-06-10 | 3.01M, 7 days +62k | Also targets Korea, where Korean utility apps chart best 32 |
| Software Updater: Update Apps | SaverHub Apps | 2026-07-29 | 120k, +31k in 7 days | **Closest rival** : same Korean title "소프트웨어 업데이트: 앱 업데이트", ranked #8 in the Korea utilities Top Grossing, and also charted in Top Grossing in hk/nl/vn/sg/ae/pl |
| Software Update : Phone Update | AZ Dev Spot | 2021-07 | 1.29M, 7 days +77k | Gained traction from Top Free charts in South Africa and similar markets |
| Phone Software Update App | Ludo Land | 2026-05-22 | 240k | Mostly India |
| Update Android System | Youngware | 2019-12 | 2.9M | No longer charting |
| Built into the system | Google Play "Update all" / auto-update; Samsung "Settings → Software update" | — | full range | Free and actually performs updates; this app only lists pending updates and then hands off to Play (its own Korean description states it "does not install or auto-update directly") |

**No open-source or web equivalents worth noting; the big platforms' built-in features fully cover its core use.** On "what it does," this app is indistinguishable from the ones above, and even the title collides with Squad Apps Studio's app.

### 3. Where users come from

| Channel | Evidence | Confirmed? |
|---|---|---|
| Play Store search (Korean ASO) | Korean-store title "소프트웨어 업데이트: 휴대전화 업데이트" and a full Korean description; its chart performance is mostly in Korea; SaverHub on the same chart uses the same Korean title playbook | Fairly confident (chart placement and localization are fact; search share is unverified) |
| Search demand driven by system update season | Samsung One UI 9 rolled out in Korea starting 2026-09-16, first to the S26, then in batches to the S25/Fold7 and others (namu.wiki, Samsung community, Naver blogs); this app began gaining traction in 09-29 | Timing matches; causation not verified |
| Paid acquisition (Google App Campaigns, etc.) | The traction curve is stepped (550/day → 1.8K → 2.9K → 10K), resembling a paid-acquisition cadence; but neither the Meta nor the Google ad library shows it running ads (the two libraries only cover a listed set of products, so absence there doesn't mean no spend) | Not verified |
| Cross-promotion from the same developer | Media Tech Studioz has about 9 other apps totaling roughly 10M installs (AppBrain search summary; the library shows Soccer Scores at 9.18M and Video Editor at 2.68M), so they can cross-recommend | Speculation, unverified |
| Creators / TikTok / X / Reddit / media | TikTok searches for "software update app android" return only videos teaching users to use the built-in system updater, none promoting this app; x-radar has no relevant content in 30 days; web search finds no coverage beyond store mirror sites | Confirmed none |

### 4. Why it took off

1. **Picking the right market** : Korea has a small user base but high willingness to pay, and the Korea Play utilities Top Grossing #9 slot has a low bar; this app and SaverHub both treat Korea as the main battlefield, while similar apps only reach Top Grossing #100–200 in India.

2. **Riding system update season** : One UI 9 started rolling out in Korea in mid-September, and older or less tech-savvy users searching "소프트웨어 업데이트" run into this app (timing matches, causation unverified). Reviews on Korean competitors include comments like "first time using this, it's hard" (처음인지라 어렵습니다), which suggests users don't understand their phones well.

3. **Mature template + high-priced in-app purchase** : the features are category staples (update checks, bulk uninstall, battery, sensor tests) at very low cost; a $19.99 in-app purchase plus ads gives dual monetization, and users who don't understand the phone convert well.

4. **The developer has a track record** : Media Tech Studioz has been building utility and sports-score apps since 2019, totaling about 10M installs, with paid acquisition and ASO experience (AppBrain summary, not verified app by app).

### 5. Differentiation

**Almost no product differentiation** : the features, naming, and package name all imitate the category (and share a name with Squad Apps Studio's app). The real "difference" is **in distribution** : Korean localization, targeting the Korean utilities Top Grossing chart, and timing with update season. That's why it performs, not because of the product itself.

### 6. How many people have seen it

- Revenue isn't public; no media, major X accounts, or Reddit discussion; only store mirrors and data sites (AppBrain, FoxData, APKPure) index it. It's "not widely known yet," but **this playbook is an open secret in the South Asian utility-studio circle** : the Korean utilities Top Grossing chart already has SaverHub (#8), Apps Resort (best #32), and this app (#9) crowded together, plus a row of "recover deleted messages/photos" clones.

- Followers: SaverHub's Software Updater came out two and a half months earlier, so it's a predecessor rather than a copycat; the same-template Apps Resort and Ludo Land were both newly launched 2026 years ago.

### 7. What others can borrow

- Look for small-market categories with low chart barriers and high willingness to pay (Korea TOOLS Top Grossing #8–10), and use localized titles and descriptions to ride system-level keywords ("software update").

- Watch vendors' major release timing (Samsung One UI, iOS major versions), launch early and run paid acquisition to catch the "how do I update my phone" search peak.

- But this kind of product overlaps with built-in system features and relies on information asymmetry to collect $19.99; policy risk (Google Play's "misleading claims" policy) and refund rates are both high. It's copyable but not durable.

### 8. Still unclear

- Whether it buys ads and how much (neither ad library covers it);

- Whether the $19.99 is a weekly subscription, lifetime, or ad removal, and actual revenue;

- Whether One UI 9 rollout and its traction rise are causally linked;

- Whether the tidy ratio in the rating histogram is a result of prompting positive reviews;

- Where the developer is based (package prefix mts, cricket-score apps, and the developer domain is an app-ads-txt hosting page; presumed Pakistan/South Asia, unverified).
