# "Why do I have to install a new app for an update?": StarDramaClub is the successor to two old short-drama packs

**What it is** A free vertical short-drama app for users in Thailand and Indonesia that makes money from ads. It is one of more than a dozen reskinned drama packs from the same operator.

**Why it took off** The operator shut down two older packs and moved about 680k existing users to this new one, then concentrated paid ads for about ten days and pushed it to the overall free chart in Thailand, where the bar is low. When the ads stopped, daily installs fell from tens of thousands to a few hundred.

**C** **How you could follow it** Don't copy the same shell. If you do something, do the opposite of what users complain about most: keep ads restrained, dub it in Thai or Indonesian so it feels like local content, and target the users who get pushed away by ads when these packs get swapped. Start with a small budget and work out the install cost and 7-day ad revenue first.

C grade: The pack-swapping playbook is worth learning, but its growth came from old-pack users that followers can't access. The category is a red ocean, with big companies at the top and dozens of reskinned packs crowding the middle, and the product has no differentiation. A small team following it will most likely not make money. Few people know about it yet

Data (updated daily) · first launch 2026-09-29 · 11-07 installs 115,858

Data 2026-10-29 → 2026-11-07 (10 days, 10 observations). Google's detail page only refreshes install counts every other day, so a flat day doesn't mean nobody installed.

StarDramaClub is a free vertical short-drama app on Google Play. It launched in Sep 29, reached 116k installs in five weeks, and climbed to #66 on Thailand's overall free chart in Oct 18. Its growth didn't come from the product, and not entirely from paid user acquisition either. The same operator shut down AmorDrama, an older Thai pack, and Echo Page, an Indonesian pack disguised as a "browser", pushing users into this new one, then ran ads even harder than before. The swap playbook is worth understanding, but following it isn't worth it.

### A Thai user tapped "Update"

In Oct 13, a Thai user left a 4-star review on AmorDrama's store page: "There was an update, I tapped it, but why do I have to install a new app? Has anyone else had this?" Two days later someone else wrote: "Lots of shows... but this app doesn't work anymore."

The same thing was happening in Indonesia. An app called Echo Page suddenly wouldn't open, and users asked on its page: "Why won't it open? Did they say it's no longer maintained? I really loved watching dramas here." In Oct 14, someone left a one-star review on StarDramaClub's Indonesian store page, and 36 people marked it helpful: "I used Echo Page and then got redirected here. But this app has more ads than dramas. Uninstalling."

In Oct 22, another review in the Thai store said: "The old app AmorDrama made me update to this one, but there are way more ads than before. It's exhausting."

The first review on StarDramaClub's store page dates from Oct 13 to 14. It was quiet for its first two weeks. Once the old packs were shut down, it started to climb.

### Three packs, one operator

On Play, these three apps sit under three unrelated developer names, but a closer look links them (Google Play store pages, 11-06):

| App | Developer name | Launched | Installs | Market | Now |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| AmorDrama | Shahid abbass | 07-07 | 528k | Thailand | Discontinued, grew only 642 in 7 days |
| Echo Page | MUHAMMAD ASIM | 07-10 | 150k | Indonesia | Discontinued |
| StarDramaClub | SmartApp Technology Group | 09-29 | 116k | Thailand, Indonesia | Successor |

The privacy policies of all three are hosted as subpages of the same domain, b7m6.com. The developer website filled in for AmorDrama and Echo Page is the same, mdcsdtrc.top. There are at least a dozen more short-drama packs on Play using this privacy-page template (Reelora, Drama Sprout, VelvetReel, and others), totaling about 6M installs across different countries. Reelora and StarDramaClub were published on the same day.

A few details suggest this was deliberate:

- **Echo Page is a "browser" in the store.** Its category is set to "Tools", and the description reads "simple, practical web browser app with multiple tabs and browsing history", without a single mention of short dramas. Yet users were watching dramas in it, and some had even paid for subscriptions ("Subscription isn't expensive and there are lots of good shows", 10-05). Passing app review with a browser shell is a gray-area tactic.

- **The developer account was borrowed from an old one.** The SmartApp Technology Group account previously held a batch of small games and calculators made with an app builder. The linked website belonged to an outsourced CRM company, but the legal name was a Malaysian individual. Hanging the new pack on the old account means banning one account only costs one pack.

- **The store copy is generic:** "romance, revenge, comeback, and urban drama shorts … pick up right where you left off". Sibling packs using the same template use the same line.

The reason for the swap isn't visible from outside. Common explanations are the risk of the old pack being pulled, low ratings from complaints, or wanting to restart with a version that has heavier ads (inferred).

### How fast it's growing

| Timeline | What happened | Sources |
|---|---|---|
| 09-29 | Launched, no movement for two weeks | Google Play |
| 10-13 to 10-14 | Old pack discontinued, first reviews appear | Store reviews |
| 10-17, 10-18 | Thailand Play overall free chart #71 and #66 (best result) | AppInsider |
| 10-21, 10-23 | Thailand Entertainment free chart #32 | 42Answer |
| 10-26 | About 16.5k daily installs, peak | AppstoreSpy estimate |
| Around 11-02 | 100k total installs | Google Play installs |
| 11-04 | Daily installs fall to about 400 | AppstoreSpy estimate |
| 11-06 | 115,858 total; Thailand Entertainment free chart #112, dropped off the Indonesian chart | Google Play |

The two old packs together had 680k installs, enough users to carry the first few days. But tens of thousands of new installs a day from Oct 20 to 26, and the climb onto the overall chart, can't be explained by migration alone. A paid acquisition push most likely ran alongside it (inferred; the platform and spend can't be found). On Thailand's Play store, a few thousand to ten thousand installs a day is enough to get into the top 70 of the free overall chart, and once there, store browsing brings additional organic installs. When the ads stopped, it was down to a few hundred a day from Nov 4.

It has no official TikTok account, no X posts about it in 30 days, and no media coverage.

### Where the money comes from

The store page says "Contains ads", with no in-app purchases. The money comes from ads, and after the swap the ads got heavier. The most-liked Thai review (25 people marked it helpful, 10-19) says:

> ก็รู้ว่าไม่ซื้อโปรต้องทนดูไปบ้าง แต่ไม่คิดว่าโฆษณามันจะเยอะขนาดนี้ ดูได้ตอนสองตอนโฆษณาขึ้น โฆษณาเป็นนาทีเลย ไม่ใช่แอปดูซีรีย์หรอก แต่เป็นแอปขายโฆษณามากกว่านะ ——I know that if I don't buy the premium plan I have to put up with some ads, but I didn't expect this many. An ad pops up after one or two episodes, and it runs for a full minute. This isn't a show app, it's an ad-selling app.

Indonesian users were shorter: "Two ads per episode, and you can't skip them" (10-18), "The battery dies from ads before I even start watching" (10-14). Some were happy too: "Works well, watch for free" (10-14,11 people marked it helpful), "Good visuals, good dubbing" (10-26).

Interestingly, users talk about "membership" and "subscription", yet the store says there are no in-app purchases. One Indonesian user wrote "I moved over from Echo Page and subscribed too", and another said "I subscribed, then suddenly all the shows were gone, and the rest are all Chinese dramas". The membership payments likely don't go through Google Play billing (inferred, unverified). The main revenue is still ads: installs are cheap in Thailand and Indonesia and ads can be packed densely, so a single user can still pay back their cost (inferred).

### Who it's competing with

Same time, Thailand's chart is full of apps like this. In the Thailand Entertainment Top Free top 50 on Oct 28, 21 are short-drama apps (42Answer Thailand weekly report).

| Product | Scale | Compared with StarDramaClub, |
|---|---|---|
| ReelShort, DramaBox | About 300M installs each | with in-house licensed series, charged per episode in coins and subscriptions |
| FreeReels, Melolo, PineDrama | tens of millions to hundreds of millions | big-company "free + ads" apps with licensed content and big budgets, teaching users that short dramas should be free |
| BlinkDrama | ~+1.8M a day over 8 days | 10-28 Thailand Entertainment #10, with heavier Thai localization |
| DramaOL, Drama World | ~+350k a day over 7 days to ~+1.27M a day over 49 days | Same paid-acquisition reskin model, running much harder |
| iDrama, DramaVue, Lucky Dramas, AnyShort | About the same | Entered Thailand's Entertainment Top 50,10-28 alongside it, and dropped out together |

StarDramaClub is mid-to-low in this group. Its only selling point is "free," and every app above it offers that too. Users don't remember it either: in reviews they compare it to their old apps, not to it on its own merits.

### Why it works

1. **It caught the users of the old packages.** When the AmorDrama and Echo Page packages stopped, their old users in Thailand and Indonesia were redirected over, and that's where the first days' installs and reviews came from (several review quotes say so).

2. **A concentrated paid push got it into the low-barrier Thailand overall chart.** Over about ten days it averaged 10,000+ daily installs, reached the top 70 of the Top Free chart, and picked up extra organic installs from store visibility.

3. **Demand was ready-made, and cost was minimal.** Video libraries, templates, privacy pages and borrowed developer accounts are all off the shelf, so launching a new package is cheap. Run a push, then stop.

### If it were you

**Verdict:** the one move worth learning is moving users between packages, which few people talk about. Following it isn't worth it, though. This is a red ocean where big companies take the top and dozens of reskinned packages crowd the middle. StarDramaClub is itself just one of a dozen sibling packages. What's most valuable to it is its ~680k old users, and followers can't get those.

**Who it suits:** teams already doing app paid acquisition and ad monetization in Southeast Asia, with several packages and old accounts on hand. For them, "stop the old package, move users to a new one, re-run ads" is a move they can take directly.

**Who it doesn't suit:** indie developers without old users or paid-ads experience (there's no organic traffic here, and nobody discusses it on TikTok or X); anyone hoping to win on content or experience (users don't stick to brands; they go wherever the ads are fewest); anyone unwilling to touch gray tactics like "browser shells" or "borrowed accounts" and wary of mass delisting by Play.

**How to do it:** if you do get in, don't build another identical shell. Build the opposite of what gets the most complaints: reviews from users who switched packages keep saying "the old app had far fewer ads" and "Echo Page had few ads, it was the best." A package with restrained ads, truly free first few episodes, and Thai or Indonesian dubbing that feels like local productions could catch the people pushed out by package switching (inference).

**How to get users:** Start with the 1-star reviews on competing apps. When rivals lock content behind paywalls or cut off episodes, users vent right there on the store page, and those are the most clearly motivated people you can find. Pair that with Meta or TikTok video ads, cut the most intense plot twist from the show into the creative, and use the copy "free, fewer ads." Test with a small budget in Thailand or Indonesia first. Work out what each install costs and whether ads can pay that back within 7 days before you spend more.

**When to get out before:** if you can't find creatives and countries that break even within 2027 year's first half, stop. Big companies' free short-drama apps eat more of these users every week.

**Signs you've misread it:** ① The b7m6 package family in Thailand and Indonesia gets a new successor package that again breaks into the overall chart. That would mean the package-switching business is still profitable for experienced operators, and their ad strategy is worth studying closely. ② Conversely, if packages like StarDramaClub are mass-delisted by Play within a month or two, the window for these gray tactics is closing. ③ If a "few ads" short-drama package climbs into the top 30 of the Entertainment chart in Thailand or Indonesia on word of mouth from reviews alone, then "the one with fewer ads" is a real path.

| DramaOL / Drama World | Android | 2026 | ~+49M a day over 1.27 days / ~+7k a day over 350 days | Same paid-acquisition short-drama shell model, running much harder |
| WeTV / iQIYI / Monomax | Android | Already around | Tens of millions | Licensed long-form series; good content requires VIP |

Where users come from

- Inference **Paid acquisition (platform unknown)** : the first review came on 10-14; from 10-20 to 10-26 daily installs went from ~10k to ~16.5k, then fell to 405 at 11-04. That's the shape of a push. Neither the metaads nor the googleads library has it.

- **Verified** **Chasing the overall chart for organic store installs** : 10-18 Thailand Play Top Free overall #66,10-21, Entertainment category #32 (AppInsider, 42Answer)

- **Verified** **Matrix of packages, one per market** : the privacy and support pages are at stardramaclub.b7m6.com; the template matches 15 sibling packages; it launched the same day as Reelora.

- **Verified** **Borrowed old developer account** : the SmartApp Technology Group account holds small games made by an app-generator, such as com.mstoreapp.ionic…; the legal name LAW JIAN HAW is also attached to another account, MobileAppsCorner.

- Inference **Traffic from the older AmorDrama package** : the previous package in Thailand was already declining, and the timing lines up, but there is no direct evidence.

## Why StarDramaClub (com.stardramaclub.app) got to where it did

> Channel: Google Play | Developer account: SmartApp Technology Group (legal name LAW JIAN HAW, email wj8178499@gmail.com) | Launched: 2026-09-29 | Category: Entertainment | Research date: 2026-11-06

### Bottom line

It didn't make it on its own. StarDramaClub is one package in a "b7m6.com shell matrix": the same operator, under a dozen unrelated developer accounts, batch-publishes free short-drama apps on one template. This package was assigned Thailand, plus a bit of Indonesia. From 10-14 to 10-26 it got one concentrated paid push, averaging 3k to 16k installs a day, and reached #66 on the Thailand Play Top Free overall chart at 10-18. When the push stopped, daily net growth fell to 400 to 800 from 11-04 onward. Users came because it offers "free short dramas, no buying coins to unlock VIP." The money comes back through ads (Contains ads, no in-app purchases). The product has no differentiation, and the most common complaint in reviews is too many ads.

Indonesia Entertainment category: 10-29 #50,11-01, #137, then dropped off the chart. | AppInsider timeline; 42Answer; googleplay library chart_rank |

**Shape of the curve:** 09-29 After launch there was no movement for two weeks. 10-14 the first review appeared, 10-16 AppInsider first picked it up, and the next ten-odd days were a steep ramp, then a cliff-like drop. This isn't word-of-mouth growth; it's what a push looks like once it's over.

### 2. Competitors

#### 2.1 Sibling packages from the same operator (b7m6.com matrix)

How to check: in the googleplay library, apps whose developer website or privacy policy points to `*.b7m6.com` (and dramasheel.com, used by the same people). There are 15 in total, roughly 6.08M installs combined; the detailed breakdown is in this directory's play_com.app.dramasprout.org.md. The most relevant to StarDramaClub:

| App | Developer account | Launched | Installs | 7-day gain | Main market |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Reelora | xolbor | **09-29 (same day as StarDramaClub)** | 234k | +64k | LatAm / US / Spain |
| StarDramaClub | SmartApp Technology Group | 09-29 | 116k | +43k | Thailand (dropped off the Indonesia chart) |
| AmorDrama | Shahid abbass | 07-07 | 528k | +642 | Thailand (already declining) |
| VelvetReel | MUHAMMAD NASIR UD DIN | 04-21 | 306k | +110k | — |
| Drama Comet / Sprout Shorts / Drama Sprout / PlotPop / Comet Shorts | 5 different accounts | 10-22 same day | 2k to 54k | — | Brazil / India / Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines, South Africa / France, Italy |

(googleplay library app, app_profile, 2026-11-06)

Evidence that places it in this matrix:

- The support page `stardramaclub.b7m6.com/support.html` and the privacy page `stardramaclub.b7m6.com/privacy.html` use the same template. Both pages were published by 2026-09-28, one day before the listing. The privacy policy was generated with "Free Privacy Policy Generator", names the company "StarDramaClub" and the country "Washington, United States", exactly like Drama Sprout.

- The store copy uses the one-size-fits-all line the matrix shares: "romance, revenge, comeback, and urban drama shorts … pick up right where you left off".

- Listed the same day as Reelora. For Thailand, the previous package, AmorDrama, has already declined (7 days, up 642 only), and StarDramaClub looks like the package replacing it (inference).

**The developer account is borrowed or bought, an old one:** The SmartApp Technology Group account has a dozen other apps under it, with package names like `com.mstoreapp.ionic1716976859063`, `com.mstoreapp.driver…`, `com.wMahanidhiHomes_16341783`, `com.wStoreCram_13259691`. These are mass-produced mini games and calculators from an app generator (Star Catch Sprint, Candy Drop Factory, Fruit Cost Calculator…). The website linked to the account, smartapptechnologies.com, belongs to a company that does CRM and website outsourcing. The registered legal name, though, is LAW JIAN HAW, an individual in Malaysia. That same name is also tied to another developer account, MobileAppsCorner (Ignify - Chat & Date, 18k installs; see play_com.ignify.chat.md in this directory). Taken together, this looks like an old account carrying new shells to spread out ban risk. The account itself has no connection to this operator.

#### The real competitors in the 2.2 category (Thai market)

| Product | Where | Launched | Scale | How StarDramaClub differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ReelShort / DramaBox | Android/iOS | 2022-08 / 2023-04 | About 300M installs each (see the DramaVibe report in this directory) | They have original licensed shows and earn through coins and subscriptions. StarDramaClub is fully free and relies only on ads. |
| FreeReels / DramaWave (Kunlun), Melolo / PineDrama (ByteDance) | Android / big-company features | 2024–2025 | tens of millions to hundreds of millions | Also free with ads, but with licensed content and big budgets |
| BlinkDrama | Android | — | 8 days, about +1.8M, #10 on the Thailand Entertainment chart 10-28 | Heavier Thai localization (titles written directly in Thai), and more than ten times its scale |
| DramaOL, Drama World (com.watcher.drama.world) | Android | 2026 | About +1.27M over 49 days; about +350k over 7 days; ranked #20 / #21 in the Thailand Entertainment chart | A paid-acquisition shorts shell of the same kind, growing faster than it (42Answer Thailand chart: 10-28) |
| iDrama, DramaVue, Lucky Dramas, AnyShort, ReelSpace | Android | 2026 | Similar. Around 10-21 both sat at #30–#47 on the Thailand Entertainment chart. | Charted together and dropped out of the top 50 together on 10-28. Lucky Dramas pitches itself as "watch dramas, earn money". |
| WeTV, iQIYI, Monomax, CH7ON | Android | Already around | Tens of millions | Licensed long-form shows, with the good content behind VIP. StarDramaClub targets the people who don't want to pay. |

According to 42Answer, 21 of the top 50 entertainment apps in Thailand (10-28) are shorts apps. StarDramaClub is a mid-to-low performer in this crowd of reskinned packages.

### 3. Growth tactics

| Channel | Evidence | Confirmed? |
|---|---|---|
| Paid acquisition, concentrated spend | The first review appeared on 10-14. Daily installs went from 10-20 to 10-26 (10k to 16.5k) and then fell to 11-04 by 405 (AppstoreSpy). The curve is the typical shape of paid campaigns. We cannot tell which platform the spend went to: our metaads and googleads libraries don't index it (those two libraries only track a fixed list of products). | Paid acquisition is an inference, backed by strong evidence; platform not confirmed |
| Pushing into the overall chart for organic installs | 10-17 and 10-18 entered the Thailand Google Play Top Free overall chart at #71 and #66, and the Entertainment category chart at #32 (AppInsider, 42Answer). The bar for the Thai overall chart is low. A few thousand to ten thousand daily installs will get you on it, and charting also brings a browsing traffic bump. | Confirmed |
| Matrix of packages, one package per market | b7m6 matrix of 15 packages, listed the same day as Reelora. This one handles Thailand; Reelora handles Latin America and the US (see 2.1). | Confirmed |
| Old package funnels traffic | The previous Thai package, AmorDrama, has already declined, and the timing lines up. But there is no direct evidence, such as reviews mentioning a move to a new app. | Inference, weak evidence |
| Review ops | 226 ratings at 4.6 stars, a normal ratio for 110k installs. The most upvoted reviews are negative ones complaining about ads, which doesn't look like a batch of fake reviews. | No evidence of review farming |
| TikTok / X / YouTube / media | Searching TikHub for "StarDramaClub" turned up no official account (the results, like starsdrama_ca, are other shorts accounts). x-radar: 0 posts in 30 days. On YouTube there is a "Star Drama Club" (@stardramaclub5,76 subscribers) posting Chinese micro-drama clips, with content more than half a year older than the app. Most likely unrelated. | No content marketing confirmed |

**Where the money comes from:** No in-app purchases. It runs entirely on ads. One review reads "ดูได้ตอนสองตอนโฆษณาขึ้น โฆษณาเป็นนาทีเลย … เป็นแอปขายโฆษณามากกว่า" (after one or two episodes an ad pops up, and the ads run a full minute. It's more an app that sells ads than an app for watching shows), marked helpful by 25 people. Another says "โฆษณาบ่อยมากกกกกก" (way too many ads), marked helpful by 18 people. The ad density is very high, and per-user ad revenue is what pushes it up. Thai install costs are low and ad fill is good, so the business works. Another user writes "ก็รู้ว่าไม่ซื้อโปรต้องทนดูไปบ้าง" (I know if I don't buy a subscription I have to put up with ads), which suggests there may be an in-app ad-removal membership. The store listing says no in-app purchases, though. Unverified.

### 4. Why it took off

1. **A concentrated campaign plus Thailand's low bar for the overall chart.** Within about ten days, daily installs passed ten thousand. It reached the top 70 of the Thailand Google Play Top Free overall chart and #32 in the Entertainment category (AppInsider, 42Answer and AppstoreSpy estimates).

2. **The demand already exists.** Thai users have already been trained by ReelShort, DramaBox and ByteDance's apps on "domineering CEO, revenge, comeback" shorts, and paid shorts charge in coins per episode. "ใช้งานง่ายไม่เสียเงิน" (easy to use, costs nothing) is the reason users give.

3. **The matrix runs as an assembly line.** Templates, content library, privacy pages and developer accounts are all ready-made, so launching another package is cheap. A campaign only has to pay back through ad revenue. If it doesn't, they stop. The cliff after 11-04 suggests this run has ended, or spend has moved to other packages.

### 5. Differentiation

For users there is only one real difference: **it's free** . The cost is very heavy ads. The reviews that get the most approval are the ones complaining about ads. The dozen or so packages in the matrix, FreeReels, Melolo and DramaOL all share this, so StarDramaClub has nothing unique. Differentiation didn't drive its results; distribution did: paid acquisition, a push into the Thai overall chart, and one package per market.

### 6. How many people have seen it

- No public revenue figures, no founder, no press coverage. 0 posts on X, and no official TikTok account.

- It appears only on automated data sites such as AppBrain, AppInsider, 42Answer, AppGoblin, APKPure, Softonic and XWorld. 42Answer mentioned it once in its Thailand chart weekly report, as an entry that dropped out of the top 50.

- Bottom line: **Almost nobody knows about it.** But the "reskinned free shorts + ads + Southeast Asia paid acquisition" business is already crowded. In 10-28, the Thailand Entertainment top 50 alone had 21 shorts apps, and our earlier reports have already broken down dozens of similar shells.

### 7. What's worth borrowing

- **Short cycles, run one push and move on:** List, age the package for two weeks, concentrate about ten days of spend, push into the overall chart for organic installs, stop if ROI is poor, and switch to the next package. One package living for a month is enough.

- **One package per market, using borrowed old developer accounts:** A ban only costs one package, and it makes returns easy to track by country.

- **On Thai Google Play, ten thousand daily installs gets you into the Top Free overall chart's top 70:** that is very cheap store exposure.

- **Risks:** Ads that are too heavy damage reputation (the Indonesia store rating is only 4.1 stars). Content licensing is unclear. The developer account is borrowed, so takedown risk is high.

### 8. Still unclear

- Which platforms the spend went to: metaads and googleads libraries don't index it. AppInsider has a "traffic source" breakdown (paid / search / browse), but it requires signing up.

- Whether the app has a membership or ad-removal purchase (reviews mention "โปร"), and where the content comes from.

- Whether AmorDrama was the funnel that brought users over to Thailand.

- Whether the decline after 11-04 is because spend stopped, or the budget moved to the new packages from 10-22.

- The operator's real identity: is LAW JIAN HAW (Malaysia) a nominee holder, or the operator themselves?
