AI Clean Up: Storage Cleaner · Markcon Apps

How a cleaner app mocked as "impossible to uninstall" squeezed into India's Productivity Top Grossing #15: AI Clean Up's category trick

What it is An Android phone cleaner and photo deduplication tool that finds duplicate photos, large videos and big files. Scanning is free, cleaning requires payment, and there are ads.

Why it took off It buys lots of interstitial-ad installs in cheap markets like India, the Philippines and Mexico through web-money and casual mini-game traffic, and after install, constantly pops up windows pulling people back to the paywall. It also places itself in the "Productivity" category, where competition is thin, so its Top Grossing rank looks high.

CHow you could follow it Don't build the Nth cleaner. If you're already in the crowded utility category, copy its move of picking a store category with less competition to get chart exposure, test in small emerging-market ad budgets with ad networks until it pays back, then scale; make the product clean, non-intrusive, and easy to unsubscribe from.

Grade C: the category-arbitrage and emerging-market paid-acquisition playbook is worth learning, but the cleaning niche is packed with buy-traffic factories like Codeway and iKame that are dozens of times larger. The product has no moat, its own growth is slowing, and its pop-up tactics carry takedown risk, so following it isn't worth the effort. Few people know about this yet

A small team in Lahore that makes utility apps shipped a phone cleaner in September that looks like hundreds of others. It hit 1.77M installs in two months and has stayed at #14 and #15 on India's Google Play Productivity top-grossing chart. The product itself has nothing to copy. Two things are worth learning: how the money is pulled out of cheap emerging-market traffic, and why it sits in Productivity instead of Tools.

"Popups jump up while an important chat is going on"

2026 年 9 月 12 日,这个 App 上架第 8 天,一位叫 Sydney Austrap 的用户在 Google Play 留了一星:「over disturbing, as unnecessary popups, even when some important chat is going on … there is no uninstall option」——太打扰了,重要的聊天正聊着也弹,想卸都找不到地方。到 11 月 6 日,这条评论有 1,060 人点了「有用」,是整个评论区最高的一条。11 月 4 日,另一位印度用户几乎一字不差地又写了一遍。

Keep scrolling and you can see where these users ran into it. In Oct 7, a UK user wrote: "Every minute there's an ad in the game I'm playing… I've done my check-in for 118 days straight and been promised £10K three times, never got it." That's the usual complaint about earn-money and check-in mini games, which is where its ads are placed. In Nov 3, someone wrote: "Take your app off my phone, I'm sick of you putting things on my phone." The same day, an Indian user wrote in Hindi: "My phone is unusable, this stupid ad keeps popping up over and over, stop sending it."

This is AI Clean Up: Storage Cleaner (package name com.storage.cleaner.markcon). Here's how big it is, where the money comes from, who it's competing with, and whether you should follow it.

What it is and how big it is

The store description is one paragraph: find duplicate photos, similar images, extra screenshots, large videos and large files, compress photos and videos, "Smart AI Cleaner". It does the same things as Files by Google's cleanup or Google Photos' "free up space", and it's no different from the hundreds of other cleaner apps in the category. In-app purchases run from $2.99 to $49.99, and there are also ads.

The numbers (Google Play installs and charts, 10-29 to 11-06):

Launched2026-09-04
Global installs10-29 about 1.5M → 11-06 about 1.77M

Daily new ratingsAround the end of October it was about 44k a day, falling to about 24k by 11-06. It's slowing down.

CategoryProductivity (PRODUCTIVITY)

It's on the Productivity top-grossing chart in several countries: #14–15 in India (it hasn't dropped out of that spot in 9 days), #23–29 in the Philippines, #47–53 in Mexico, #70–83 in the US, and #73–75 in Canada. On 11-06 it charted in 17 countries. The third-party data site Peekly estimates its monthly revenue at $50k to $98k. That figure is unverified.

Why it's in Productivity and not Tools

This is the most interesting decision in this app.

Most cleaner apps on Google Play sit in the Tools category. 11-06 In India's Top Grossing Tools chart, 40 of the top 10 slots go to cleaner apps: Codeway, Shlag, iKame, TarrySoft, GRIMLAX... But on the same day, only 3 cleaner apps made India's Top Grossing Productivity top 100: it (#15), Mega Ludo's Storage Cleaner for Android (#47), and AVG Cleaner (#94). The US is the same: in the Productivity Top Grossing chart, the cleaner apps are just AVG (#35) and it (#73), and the rest are cloud storage apps.

With the same revenue, it would probably not make the top 40 in Tools. In Productivity it lands in the top 15. Chart position doesn't bring money directly, but it does bring some store exposure, and it makes the app look like a strong earner on third-party data sites (inferred). The name was chosen with care too: "AI Clean Up: Storage Cleaner" stacks high-search-volume keywords, and it is word for word the same as an app Shlag put on iOS in January 2024.

But these two points are only icing. Several tens of thousands of installs a day can't be explained by store search alone.

Where users come from

It's almost certainly buying interstitial and rewarded ads inside other apps: earn-money games, check-in games, casual mini games, through ad networks like AppLovin, Unity and Mintegral (inferred, based on the reviews). The countries where it charts (India, the Philippines, Mexico, South Africa, Nigeria, Malaysia) are exactly the places where this kind of traffic is cheapest.

The other channels don't look like the main driver:

  • Google Search ads: In the Google Ads Transparency Center, the advertiser that matches it, "Markcon Limited Company", has only 3 creatives in total. It ran only in Saudi Arabia from Aug 6 to Sep 8, and it isn't running now.
  • Meta: No Meta Ad Library page linking to this package ID turned up. Peekly's page says "Meta Ads 70 active", but it's behind a paywall and unverified.
  • TikTok, X, Reddit, media: Nothing found for any of them. The developer's site, markconapps.com, doesn't even list this app.

What keeps people using it once it's installed? The reviews point to interruption: "it opens itself when not wanted" (10-17), "popup not allowing to open apps" (10-19), "continuous ad is coming, I'm not able to call anyone" (9-17). It looks like notifications or floating windows keep popping up "clean now", repeatedly pulling people in front of the paywall. This is a gray-area tactic, and Google Play's policy against disruptive ads covers exactly this.

Where the money comes from

A very old funnel: scanning is free, cleaning costs money. The reviews say it bluntly: "I don't want a subscription, but I can't clean without paying" (9-28), "I was cheated, I thought it could clear 30% of the bad files" (11-04), "why do you charge hidden fees every day?" (10-19), "cancelling is extremely hard" (9-16).

In emerging markets a single install is cheap, so it only takes a small share of users scared by popups paying weekly for the numbers to work. The cost is reputation. The store average is 4.45,5 stars across 6,000 multiple ratings, which looks fine. But among the last 400 reviews with text, one-star reviews make up more than half, and most five-star reviews are a single word like "good", "nice" or "super". The second most-liked five-star review says nothing about cleaning at all ("have managed to create a very comfortable and mobile system that is sophisticated", 607 helpful votes). It looks as if the app filters out unhappy users before asking for a rating, or that ratings were bought (inferred, not verified). Across the nearly hundred reviews I read, the developer never replied to a single one.

Who's behind it

The Play developer is Markcon Apps. Its other two apps are a Quran learning app (Iqra - Quran Tutor, 370k installs) and Noorly Pro (280k). The company is registered in Manama, Bahrain, was founded in 2021, and has never raised funding. The Facebook page lists a Pakistani phone number, and LinkedIn shows hiring in Lahore. The iOS account has 16 apps, including an iOS version of the same cleaner, GoClean - AI Storage Cleaner (launched in June, 47 ratings), plus a GLP-1 tracker, a mirror app and others, none of which took off.

This is a typical small app factory: ship in bulk, and put more money behind whichever one's paid acquisition math works. This one hit on Android. The same app did not hit on iOS.

Who it's competing with

Everyone. Cleaning is one of the most crowded Tools categories on Google Play. There are 7 multiple apps with "clean" in the title that added more installs than it did in the last 30 days (Google Play installs, 11-06):

CompetitorsScaleNotes
Cleanup (Codeway, Turkey)36.5M installs, +960k in 7 days#1 on US Tools top-grossing, with 3,800 multiple live Meta ads. 20 times its size.
AI Cleaner (iKame, Vietnam)11M, 7 days +530k#3 on India Tools top-grossing, same kind of paid acquisition
Clean Manager(Shlag)9.25M, 7 days +540k#11 on India Tools top-grossing

New cleaner apps take off almost every week. Few people know AI Clean Up, but that doesn't matter. It is itself a follower, and its playbook is public.

If it were you

Verdict: Don't build the Nth cleaner. What's worth taking away is a small trick: the same product, put in a store category with fewer competitors, looks much better on the top-grossing charts and gets more exposure. And one fact: in markets like India, the Philippines and Mexico where traffic is cheap, buying ad-network installs plus a paywall adds up for cleaning, a category that plays on "my storage is full".

Who it suits: Tools teams of 2–5 people already running ad-network campaigns (AppLovin, Unity, Mintegral) who can tell acquisition cost and conversion rate apart by country, and who have a paywall and attribution setup ready to ship roughly one app a month.

Who it doesn't suit: Anyone who doesn't buy installs and relies on organic store traffic; anyone who cares about reputation and doesn't want to be called a "scam" or "malware" in one-star reviews; anyone with a single developer account that can't afford a ban.

How to do it: If you're already working in a red-ocean Tools category, first count how many competitors your category has in the Tools chart versus the Productivity chart (or another sensible category), and pick the one with fewer rivals that still fits. If you do build a cleaner, don't copy its back-end popups or its hard-to-cancel flow. Build a "clean" version: scanning is free, state up front how much space cleaning will free, and make trials and cancellation easy to find. In a category where half the reviews are one-star, reputation alone is a differentiator.

How to acquire users: Interstitial and rewarded video through ad networks in emerging markets, with creatives built around the "storage full" warning and the GB number the scan returns. Store titles stuffed with keywords. The ceiling for this kind of acquisition is cost per install and weekly subscription conversion. Test on a small budget in one or two countries until it pays back, then scale.

Is there a deadline: No fixed one. Demand for cleaning is there all year. The window is not about time. It depends on whether you can push acquisition cost below what a subscription pays back.

Signs you've misread it: (1) It drops out of India's Productivity top-grossing chart in the next month or two and daily installs keep falling. That would mean this wave was propped up by a burst of spending, and its unit economics are not as good as they look. (2) Google Play removes it, or a rush of cleaner apps floods Productivity. That would mean the category trick's window has closed. (3) The reverse: Markcon moves another app to a different category under a new name and it also works. That would mean this factory-plus-category-arbitrage approach is still working in 2026 and is worth copying seriously.

Where users come from
  • Verified ad network interstitials/rewarded ads (in idle-money and casual games): Play reviews: 1,053 people voted helpful on reviews saying pop-ups during chats, can't uninstall; 'every minute an ad pops up … promised £10K' (earn-money game); 'putting your apps on my phone'; Indian users complaining about the same ad popping up over and over
  • Verified pop-up/notification recall after install + paywall: reviews: 'it opens itself when not wanted', 'pop-ups everywhere … difficult to unsubscribe', 'without chargeable they are not giving access'
  • Verified Google Ads: googleads library: Markcon Limited Company (Saudi, legal-name mapping, medium confidence) has only 3 creatives; 2026-08-06 to 09-08 it ran only in SA; not running now
  • Inferred Meta ads: none in the metaads library; Peekly says 70 ads active, but it's behind a paywall, not verified
  • Verified store category arbitrage + keyword-stuffed name: placed in PRODUCTIVITY: in India's Top Grossing for that category, only 3 of the top 100 are cleaners (it's #15); TOOLS top 40 has 10 of them; the app name is identical to Shlag's older iOS app

Channel: Google Play | Developer: Markcon Apps (registered in Bahrain / Pakistani team) | Launched 2026-09-04 | Research day 2026-11-06

Bottom line

The product itself is nothing new: a photo deduplication and large-file cleaner with an 'AI' label, no different from hundreds of similar cleaner apps. It charts because of a formulaic cleaner monetization playbook: buy heavy interstitial and rewarded ad installs inside other apps (especially idle-money and mini games); after install, pull users back with aggressive pop-ups; put features behind a paywall, weekly subscriptions from $2.99; and file itself under PRODUCTIVITY, a much less crowded category than TOOLS, which got it to #15 in India's Top Grossing and #73 in the US. It's a volume-and-interruption money machine, and the reviews show it.

CategoryPRODUCTIVITY (most top peers in the category sit in TOOLS)

Productivity category chart (chart_rank):

  • India Top Grossing: 10-29 to 11-06 consistently at #14–15; Top Free 35–41
  • Philippines Top Grossing 23–29; Mexico Top Grossing 47–53 (Top Free climbed from 69 to 35); US Top Grossing 70–83; Canada Top Grossing 73–75
  • Best overall grossing rank: #181 in India
  • charted in 17 countries that day

Smart category choice (11-06 India Productivity Top Grossing): the only cleaner in it is this one (#15), Mega Ludo's Storage Cleaner for Android (#47) and AVG Cleaner (#94); meanwhile India's TOOLS Top Grossing top 40 is crowded with Codeway, Shlag, iKame, TarrySoft, GRIMLAX and 10 other cleaner apps. The US is the same: in Productivity Top Grossing, the only cleaners are AVG (#35) and this one (#73), the rest are cloud drives. So its grossing rank is largely the result of category arbitrage; the same revenue would probably not reach this high in TOOLS.

2. Competitors

Photo cleaning / deduplication is one of the most crowded tool niches on Google Play. In our library, titles containing 'clean' that have more new installs than it in the last 7 days number 30+ (googleplay library app_profile, 11-06):

Conclusion: no product-level differentiation. The description is 'find duplicate photos, large files, similar images, compress'; every competitor has these features.

3. Growth tactics (where users come from)

  1. Buying interstitial / rewarded ads inside other apps (high confidence, evidence from reviews)
    • Most-helpful review (1,053 people voted helpful, 2026-09-12): "unnecessary popups, even when some important chat is going on … there is no uninstall option"
    • "the worst app to control the game I am playing and every minute an ad pops up … my streak is over 118 days, been promised £10K" (10-07): describes its ads popping up nonstop inside idle-money / streak games
    • "Get your app off my phone. I'm so sick and tired of you putting your apps on my phone"(11-03);"why jump to another apps for clean up … scam ads"(10-08)
    • Indian review: "bar bar ye bevakuf add aata hai please don't send this add again and again" (this stupid ad keeps showing again and again)
    • Source: Play reviews, scraped with google-play-scraper, 11-06. Inferred: the main channel is traffic from ad networks like AppLovin / Unity / Mintegral inside idle-money / casual games. Target countries cluster in cheap emerging markets such as India, the Philippines, Mexico, South Africa, and Nigeria, matching the countries where it charts.
  2. Aggressive post-install recall (review evidence): "it opens itself when not wanted", "pop-ups everywhere … extremely difficult to unsubscribe", "popup not allowing to open apps". It appears to use notifications or overlays that keep prompting 'clean up now' to pull people back to the paywall. This is a gray tactic that risks enforcement under Google Play's policies on disruptive ads / intrusive behavior.
  3. Google Ads: the googleads library maps it by legal name to advertiser 'Markcon Limited Company' (Saudi-registered, medium confidence). This account has only 3 creatives total; 2026-08-06 to 09-08 it ran only in Saudi Arabia, and nothing is running now → not a main channel.
  4. Meta: our metaads library has no Page that resolves to this package name. The third-party Peekly page says "Meta Ads 70 active", but it's behind a paywall, so not verified.
  5. TikTok: checked the tiktokads library (EU-targeted ads only): unconfirmed / no match; TikHub search for 'AI Clean Up Storage Cleaner' found no organic content linked to Markcon.
  6. Store search / name piggybacking: the title 'AI Clean Up: Storage Cleaner' stuffs high-volume keywords and matches Shlag's older iOS app name. It may capture some store search traffic, but that scale can't explain 30k installs a day.
  7. Ratings may have been steered: store average 4.45, 5-star share 76%; but among the latest 400 text reviews, 1-star 210 (52%), 5-star 131; most 5-star reviews are one or two words like 'good', 'nice', 'super'. Several unrelated 5-star reviews also got high helpful counts (e.g. "have managed to create a very comfortable and mobile system that is sophisticated" with 605 helpful votes, "hardcover is the best book"). Taken together, it looks like the in-app rating prompt filters out unhappy users first, or reviews were bought. Not verified.

4. Why it took off and why people pay

  • The demand has always been there: in emerging markets, low-end Android phones have small storage, and 'storage full' is a frequent pain point, so cleaner apps always have room to buy installs.
  • The payment logic is paywall + scare-style prompts: reviews include "without chargeable they are not giving access to clean the data", "tricked into thinking it would eliminate 30% of bad files", "hidden costs that you charge on daily basis", "you end up paying for it … over a dozen times". Weekly subscriptions + pop-ups + hard-to-cancel flows got some users who were scared by the pop-ups to pay.
  • Retention comes from interruption, not product experience: on the rating histogram, 1-star went from 1 at 10-29 to 301 at 11-06 681, and negative reviews are accelerating.
  • Revenue scale: #15 in India Productivity Top Grossing, plus charting in several countries. Peekly estimates MRR of $50k – $98k (third-party estimate, not verified).

5. Differentiation

  • No product differentiation. The description and feature list are nearly identical to competitors, and nothing has changed since version 10-22.
  • The only real differences are two tactical choices: ① placing it in the PRODUCTIVITY category, where it has almost no same-type competition on the grossing charts, so its rank looks high (which may help store visibility a little); ② borrowing the name of an existing, keyword-stuffed app.
  • Those two choices are not the main reason it works. The main reason is that ad-network acquisition pencils out (low CPI in emerging markets, enough paywall conversion), and the team is willing to use aggressive pop-ups.

6. Visibility

  • X (x-radar, last 60 days) has no mention of Markcon or this app; no media coverage; no Reddit discussion (Exa finds none); the official site markconapps.com doesn't even list this app and still says "100K+ Downloads".
  • The only public data is from auto-generated pages like Similarweb, Peekly, AppGoblin, and AppBrain.
  • Verdict: few people know about it yet. But this category is extremely crowded and the playbook is public, so there's no "hidden opportunity" here.

7. Copycats

I found no one specifically tracking it, but similar apps are endless: JTR Labs' Hyper Cleaner (launched 10-09, +810k in 7 days), BleymarStudio's Clean Pro (launched 09-24, +650k in 7 days), Luvasa Distro's Phone Clean Fix (launched 10-22, +278k in 7 days), and more. New cleaner apps take off almost every week.

8. Developer background

  • Play developer Markcon Apps has 3 apps in its library, with 2.42M installs combined: the other two are Iqra - Quran Tutor (370k) and Noorly Pro (280k).
  • The iOS account is MARKCON MANAGEMENT CONSULTANCY W.L.L, with 16 apps, including GoClean - AI Storage Cleaner, Mirror App, and Lipo GLP-1 Tracker. Almost none have taken off.
  • Tracxn lists it as Manama, Bahrain, founded in 2021, no funding. The Facebook page lists a +92 (Pakistan) phone number, and on LinkedIn "Markcon Limited" is hiring in Lahore.
  • Verdict: this is a small tool-app factory run by a Pakistani team, shipping in batches and scaling up whichever app hits.

9. What others can learn

  • Same category, but a store category with fewer competitors makes chart rankings and exposure look much better.
  • Cheap ad-network traffic from emerging markets (India / Philippines / Mexico / South Africa) plus a weekly subscription paywall. The unit economics for cleaner apps work out on those terms.
  • The small-team factory model: one account, many apps, double down on whichever one hits.
  • Parts not worth copying: back-end popups, hard-to-cancel subscriptions, and nudging users to leave good reviews. These risk Play delisting or account bans, and reputation is falling fast (1-star reviews make up over half).

10. Uncertain

  • Which ad networks they use and how much they spend daily: our ad library doesn't cover network ads from AppLovin / Unity / Mintegral.
  • Peekly's claim of 70 Meta ads running has not been verified.
  • Actual revenue: we only have chart rankings and third-party estimates.
  • Whether the good reviews were prompted in-app or bought can't be determined.
  • Daily installs are falling (from about 44k/day to 24k/day). Unclear whether they're cutting ad spend or whether Google took action.
