Crsel: Carousel, Collage Maker · Crsel

A 5.51M-view "done in 5 min" video: how Crsel used TikTok alt accounts to turn an old category into 850k MAU

What it is A phone app that stitches photos into Instagram carousels, collages, and story templates that connect when swiped left and right.

Why it took off The founder understands short video. The team used a network of alt accounts and paid creators to post demo videos of "made in Crsel app" templates, and viewers searched the name in the store to download the same looks. iOS did 2.7M downloads in a year; adding Android in September caught the Android users who had been waiting all year.

BHow you could chase it Don't build a second Crsel. Move the "video as template + alt account network" playbook to another tool category that can be demoed and flexed, or to another language, and launch on both stores at once to claim the name first.

Grade B: the playbook is clear, cheap, and copyable, but the carousel category is already packed with SCRL, Crsel, and name-piggybacking clones. Its key asset, the founder being a creator himself, is one followers can't get. Success depends on whether you can make a hit video yourself. Whispers in small circles

A small Warsaw company's Instagram carousel app. SCRL had the same feature seven years earlier. It worked because the co-founder is a phone-filming creator on TikTok himself. The team shot every video as a template demo anyone could copy and had a crowd of low-follower alt accounts post daily. iOS did 2.7M downloads in a year; Android arrived in September and hit 288k in six weeks. Below: what it did right, where the money comes from, who's competing, and where you could still get in.

A Tokyo-themed carousel

On 2026 4, the TikTok account val_edits162 posted a video: several photos of Tokyo streets stitched into an Instagram carousel that connects when swiped sideways, with one line of text: "Made a new Tokyo inspired photo collage carousel inspo in 5 min using the free Crsel App". The video later reached 5.51M views (TikTok, 11-06).

The account had only 15.5k followers but 687 posts. Its bio read "The Free App I use 👇 \"Crsel\" in the App store", linking to Crsel's official linktree. That 2025-08-20 video hit 2.91M, the day Crsel launched on iOS. 2026-09-26 another one hit 2.44M, and 10-09 another hit 2.04M. The day before (3), another account, sarahs_collages, posted nearly the same line, "made with 👉🏼 Crsel App", and got 3.03M views.

Sort the TikTok videos for "crsel app" by popularity and most of the top 30 come from accounts like this: creatlvblin, rachel_createss, created.by.luna, emilycreatescontent. The captions are nearly identical, and a typo, "Pretty Carousel ade in Crsel app", appears word for word across several accounts. This isn't organic word of mouth. It's a brand's network of alt accounts. Whether it's in-house or an outsourced UGC agency can't be told, but all link to the official site, so at minimum it's officially sanctioned.

What it is

Crsel (full name Crsel: Carousel, Collage Maker) is an app for Instagram "seamless carousels," collages, story templates, and Reels covers. The core move is simple: arrange several photos on one long canvas, cut it into slides with one tap, and when posted, the images connect as you swipe. It also ships with a pile of ready-made "photo dump" and "editorial" style templates.

The developer is Crsel Sp. z o.o. in Warsaw. The iOS version launched 2025-08-20, and the Android version came later (Google Play listing date 9-22, after 2026-09).

How big is it really?

Co-founder Georgy Romelashvili posted about it on LinkedIn three times:

TimelineWhat he said
2026-01-034 months in, 550k downloads; 0 paid ads; team of 3
2026-06-2610 months, 2M unique downloads, no paid ads
2026-08-20One year: 2.7M first-time downloads, 850k MAU, team of 14

The public numbers match: across the App Store's 96 storefronts there are roughly 64k ratings combined, still growing by about 200 a day. The most ratings come from the Philippines (8,215), the US (6,649), Brazil (6,416), Mexico, and India (11-06). The US storefront rating is 4.83.

On Android, cumulative installs are 9-28 and only 25k so far. From 10-01 to 10-04 it went from 67k to 132k in three days, then 11-05 to 288k, and in the last 7 days +39k (Google Play installs, third-party estimate, 11-06). It is now on the Photography Top Free chart in 8 countries: the Philippines, Argentina, Brazil, Turkey, Spain, Mexico, Thailand, and Indonesia. Its best spot is #71 in the Philippines.

Where users come from

1. The founder is the creator. Georgy's TikTok @withgeorgy has 199k followers and 3.65M likes, with the bio "Mobile phone cinematic tricks and tips / Get Crsel app 👇". He also has 45k followers on Threads. He knows which phone filming tricks go viral. That's the team's most valuable asset and the hardest to copy.

2. The video is the template. Each video demonstrates one technique (a Tokyo collage, a New York recap, a freeze-frame video, a cutout grid) and ends with "made in Crsel app". Anyone who wants the same look has one path: search the name in the store. The content and the product are the same thing, so the conversion path is as short as it gets.

3. Alt account network plus paid creators. Low-follower accounts with uniform captions post daily and rely on volume to reach millions of views. A few larger accounts add endorsements: stevenwommack, a phone-filming creator with 2.58M followers, has posted at least 8 "with the free Crsel App" tutorials since 2026-04 (top one 560k views), and simxmargo, with 3.04M followers, had one at 9-29k views in 420. Creators in Spanish and Thai have also promoted it, some on their own and some invited.

4. Local search terms in each store title. The iOS US title is "Carousel, Collage Maker", the Latin American title is "Crsel: Mejorar Galeria de Foto", Spain's is "Collage Muchas Fotos", Brazil's is "Editar e Efeitos Fotos", and Germany's is "Fotocollagen Erstellen". As a result, it ranks highest in the photography category charts of small storefronts like Honduras, Panama, and Argentina.

5. Adding Android to catch a year of pent-up demand. For a year the TikTok videos kept saying "in the App Store", and Android users could only watch. When the Play version launched, two viral videos in late September (2.44M and 420k) were followed by a jump over three days in early October. Android's country mix nearly matches the iOS storefronts with the most ratings: the same content brought the same people. The timing fits, but it can't be confirmed as the only cause; store recommendations may also have played a role.

As for "0 paid ads": that's the founder's claim. I found no ads from them in public ad libraries, but that doesn't prove there were none. Paying creators and running alt accounts clearly doesn't count as "ads" in his framing.

Where the money comes from

The app is free to download, with premium templates and features like video in carousels locked behind the Plus subscription. The Google Play in-app purchase listing ranges from $5.99 to $59.99. Reviews mention "For $60", a UK user was charged £39.99, and a Philippine user paid 799 pesos. Annual plans likely fall in the $40–$60 range (inferred).

Revenue isn't public. A third-party design site lists it at "$250k/mo", source unknown, unverified. It has only charted on the App Store overall Top Grossing in small stores like Madagascar and Nicaragua, never in a major store, so revenue is probably in the tens of thousands of dollars a month, not higher (inference).

The reviews show where its strengths and weaknesses are:

  • A Filipino user's review of 9-25 is titled "better than scrl": "the templates are so good"; another says "a lot of free templates and yet there's no annoying ads."
  • A UK user of 10-21: "discovered this app on instagram through another creator", which confirms the acquisition path.
  • One-star reviews cluster on two things. First, billing: "I was charged £39.99 after what was advertised as a free trial", "I thought it was free but there's a charge!", and a feature that used to be free for video now needs a subscription. Second, a text-editing bug: "Every time you go to edit text it glitches out", with Russian and Spanish users complaining about the same thing.

Who it's competing with

PSTR165k on PlayFollower, its site has a dedicated "Crsel alternative" page to catch searches

The sixth row is the most telling. Pixin's CRSL was on Play by 2025-12-04, when Crsel had no Android version yet. Android users who saw Crsel on TikTok searched "crsel" on Play and found this one. By 11-06, the copycat had more than 9 times the installs of the real Android app and 3 times its weekly new installs (Google Play, 11-06).

Why this one took off

The features aren't the reason. One-tap splitting, swipe preview, and matching-style Reels covers are all in SCRL too. The real differences are two, in order of importance:

  1. Distribution: a founder who already knew short video, plus a small-account "video as template" playbook. This is the main reason.
  2. Aesthetic positioning: templates aimed at young women into "aesthetic / photo dump", so users feel they're copying a look, not doing pro layout. Then multilingual titles to pull in Latin America and Southeast Asia, markets SCRL hasn't fully worked and where acquisition is cheaper.

If it were you

In one line: B. Building a "second Crsel" is pointless. The category is crowded, and even the name-copier reached millions of installs. What's worth learning is the playbook, which you can move to another tool category that hasn't been pushed this way, or to another language.

Who it suits: a team with someone who can shoot short video themselves, will post daily, or has run accounts before; someone who can make templates with taste (more important than coding). Ideally your native market is one where this playbook hasn't been worked out yet.

Who it doesn't suit: people who only code and hope for organic store traffic, or who want to head-on build an "IG carousel app" and fight SCRL, Crsel, and InsMix for the same English and Spanish keywords.

How to do it: pick a small tool category that looks impressive, is easy to demo, and makes viewers want the same result. Beyond carousels, think phone film filters, collage video, desktop wallpapers, planner templates. Do one thing and get the result in one tap. Launch on both iOS and Android right away, and at least claim your brand name on both stores (Crsel launched on Android a year late and lost over two million installs to clones). Also fix the two things this product got wrong: no bugs in text editing, and clearly state free trial and billing terms. Its one-star reviews are almost all about those two issues.

How to get users: copy its approach. Each video demos one technique with the result in 15 seconds, ending with "made in X app". Run 5–10 small accounts with uniform copy and links, post daily, find which topics reliably hit 100K views, then pay a few niche big accounts to endorse. Translate store titles to the search terms locals actually use in each country.

How long you have: there's no hard deadline, but many people have already seen this playbook, and Instagram's own Edits could add native multi-image carousels at any time. The sooner the better: aim for a first million-view video within six months.

Signs you've misread it: (1) Instagram or Edits ships native "seamless carousel" templates. The category then gets absorbed, like the old Stories templates. (2) Your accounts go a full month without a single 100K-view video. That means the playbook's upside is already gone in your chosen category or language. (3) Crsel's Android new installs drop below 2,000 a day by year-end and its iOS rating growth clearly slows. That would mean this wave was mostly one-time platform catch-up, not lasting demand.

Crsel: Carousel, Collage Maker (com.stories.crsel), and why it took off

Data card recalled from Google Play, live 2026-09 (first seen in the library 2026-09-16, store date 2026-09-22). But Android is only its second platform: the iOS version launched 2025-08-20, and iOS is the main battlefield. Today is 2026-11-06.

Bottom line

A small Warsaw company (Crsel Sp. z o.o.) making an app for "seamless Instagram carousels + collages + Stories templates". The co-founder is himself a phone-photography tutorial creator. Growth came from the creator and in-house account network he built on TikTok: viewers see "videos made with the Crsel app", then search the name in the store and download. On iOS it reached 2.7M first-time downloads and 850k monthly active users in a year (the founder's own LinkedIn figures). After 2026-09 added Android, the same TikTok traffic flowed straight into Play, which is why it hit free photography charts in several countries within weeks. The product itself is a category SCRL already proved out. What sets it apart is aesthetics ("photo dump" and "editorial" style templates), price, and go-to-market, not features.

3. Growth tactics (with evidence)

3.1 TikTok creators + its own alt-account matrix (main channel, confirmed)

Searching TikHub for "crsel" and "crsel app", almost all of the first 60 results are videos promoting it:

  • val_edits162 (15.5k followers, 687 posts): bio "The Free App I use 👇 "Crsel" in the App store", link linktr.ee/crselapp (official linktree). Single-video views: 2026-01-04 Tokyo-theme 5.51M, 2025-08-20 (the day iOS launched) 2.91M, 2026-09-26 2.44M, 2026-10-09 2.04M. One alt account has several million-view videos.
  • creatlvblin (1,329 followers, bio also links linktr.ee/crselapp), rachel_createss (136 followers, bio "Link: crsel.app/download"), maya_createss (7 followers), created.by.luna, sofi_creates9, emilycreatescontent: the copy is highly templated, even the typo "Pretty Carousel ade in Crsel app" appears word for word across several accounts. They post daily, and some single posts reach 25k–217k views. This is a classic "brand alt-account matrix / outsourced UGC account" setup: cheap to start, and it hits viral by volume.
  • Paid creators: stevenwommack (2.58M followers, phone-filming tutorials) has posted at least 2026-04 "with the free Crsel App" tutorials since 8 (top 430k views); simxmargo (3.04M followers, bio lists a business email) 2026-09-29 one post at 420k; studywithnali (30k followers) tagged [ad].
  • The founder is himself a creator: co-founder Georgy Romelashvili's TikTok @withgeorgy has 199k followers and 3.65M total likes; bio "Mobile phone cinematic tricks and tips / Get Crsel app 👇"; Threads 45k followers; Instagram bio "Co-founder @crsel.app". He understands short-video topic selection and account growth. This is the team's biggest asset.
  • The official account @crsel.app (1,324 TikTok followers) is itself small; the traffic comes from the matrix and the creators.

3.2 "No paid ads" (founder's own claim; our data can neither confirm nor refute it)

The founder wrote "0 paid ads / No paid ads" on LinkedIn twice, 2026-01 and 2026-06. Our metaads, tiktokads and googleads libraries show no advertiser for Crsel or crsel.app (not on our tracking list, so a miss doesn't mean no spend). In his telling, paying creators and running UGC accounts doesn't count as "ads".

3.3 Store ASO: localized titles stuffed with keywords in each store (confirmed)

iOS titles differ by store: the LatAm store calls it "Crsel: Mejorar Galeria de Foto", Spain "Collage Muchas Fotos", Brazil "Editar e Efeitos Fotos", Germany "Fotocollagen Erstellen", AU/NZ "Story Templates, Editor", US "Carousel, Collage Maker" (appstore library app_profile names per store). The LatAm stores actually have the highest category-chart rankings (HN 26, PA 29, AR 36, VE 39).

3.4 Android launch: catching existing demand (confirmed, timing)

TikTok videos were driving traffic before the Android launch (creators' bios said "in the App Store"), so Android users could only find other apps. The Play version went live 9-16; two weeks later (9-26 val_edits162 video at 2.44M, 9-29 simxmargo 420k) a surge hit: from 10-01 to 10-04, in three days it rose from 67k to 132k (AppstoreSpy estimate). Since then it has held at 4–7k a day. Play's country mix (PH/BR/MX/AR/TR/TH/ID/ES) largely overlaps iOS's high-rating stores, which suggests the same content brought the same people.

3.5 Third-party reviews and SEO (secondary)

pstr.app (a competitor's own site) "5 Best Carousel Maker Apps 2026" ranks Crsel #3, calling it "the fast riser"; Softonic, CNET and Updatestar have auto-generated listing pages; ScreensDesign has indexed its onboarding and paywall. On Reddit I found no thread dedicated to Crsel; the discussions are about SCRL being too expensive and people looking for free alternatives.

4. Why people stay / pay

  • The demand is specific: IG "photo dump" and seamless carousels have been sustained content formats for 2025–2026 years, and users want to recreate the look from a video. The TikTok videos are themselves template demos, so users can copy them right after installing, which keeps activation cost low.
  • iOS rating 4.83 (6,658 reviews in the US store). Reviews say "every update comes with a new feature" (App Store GB review page). Updates are frequent: the latest version added video in carousels, exporting video slideshows, background removal, borders and smart snapping (googleplay library recent_changes).
  • Monetization: Plus subscription, in-app purchases at $5.99–$59.99. The founder cites 850k MAU; he hasn't shared revenue, only ScreensDesign's "$250k/mo" estimate (unverified). It has only shown up on charts in small stores, so revenue most likely sits in the tens of thousands of dollars a month, not higher.

5. Differentiation

  • On features: one-tap slicing of multiple images into a seamless carousel, swipe preview, Reels covers, and story sets in one consistent style. SCRL has all of these, so none is unique.
  • What's actually different: ① its template aesthetic targets young women who want "aesthetic / photo dump / editorial" looks, more "copy this exact look" than "professional layout" compared with SCRL; ② distribution: every video is a template demo, so content and product are one thing; ③ multilingual ASO to tap LatAm and Southeast Asia, markets SCRL hasn't fully worked and where acquisition is cheap.
  • Why it took off: the main reason is the playbook (TikTok matrix + founder as creator), second is aesthetic positioning; the features themselves are not the reason.

6. Copycats

  • CRSL : Photo Collage Maker (Pixin Studio / xen-studios.com, a Pakistani tool factory): package com.stories.collage.filters, on Play since 2025-12-04, when Crsel had no Android version yet. The name differs by one letter, and the listing says "seamless carousel posts". Play total 2.62M, +133k over the last 7 days, more than 3 times Crsel's official Android app (googleplay library, 11-06). This is classic name-squatting: it feeds on Android users who saw Crsel promoted on TikTok and then searched Play for "crsel".
  • PSTR (Stepa Mobile Games, on Play since 2026-07, 165k installs): its website has a dedicated "Crsel Alternative" landing page to capture search traffic.
  • InsMix and similar tool-factory apps also target the same "seamless carousel" keywords.

7. Visibility

It's buzzing in small circles. The founder publicly shared download and MAU numbers on LinkedIn (modest reaction, 51 likes); ScreensDesign lists a "$250k/mo" estimate; I found nothing on TrustMRR or in the media. x-radar shows 0 posts mentioning "crsel" in the last 90 days. But competitors have noticed: Pixin rode its name early, and PSTR wrote an alternative page.

8. Takeaways

  1. The founder, or someone on the team, understands short video: start as a "tutorial creator" first, then position the product as the tool in the tutorial.
  2. Video-as-template: each video demos one technique, ends with "made in X app". Users who want the same result download; shortest path to conversion.
  3. Low-follower alt account matrix: same copy, same linktree, post daily, ride volume to millions of views; plus a few million-follower phone photography creators as endorsers.
  4. Localized titles per store stuffed with local search terms (LatAm "Mejorar Galeria de Foto"), catching search traffic in low-price markets.
  5. Cautionary tale: the content blew up, but Android launched a year late, and clone apps grabbed the brand search on Play. Launch on both platforms early, or at least claim the brand name in both stores first.

9. Uncertain

  • Revenue: only ScreensDesign's $250k/mo estimate; the founder hasn't shared revenue, unverified.
  • "0 paid ads" is the founder's own claim; the ad libraries don't track it, so it can't be verified independently. Costs of paid creators and UGC accounts are unclear.
  • Can't tell whether the alt-account matrix is run in-house or outsourced to a UGC agency (they share the official linktree, so at least official approval).
  • Didn't find whether Pixin's CRSL ran paid ads on the "crsel" brand term on Play.
  • Whether the 10-01-10-04 Android spike was driven by those viral videos is only a timing match; Play editorial featuring can't be ruled out either.
