One package, three borrowed names: a Pakistani indie developer's "Seedance" wrapper
What it is An Android AI video app: type a sentence or upload a photo to generate a short video, with face-swap and dance templates, monetized through in-app purchases.
Why it's getting traction ByteDance has no official Play app called Seedance, so this one put "Seedance 2.0 & 2.5" in its title. It ranks #2 for that term in the US, India, and the Philippines. Its rating of 4.3 beats the 2.6 and 3.9 apps on the same screen, so more people tap through. 21k installs in three months, a few hundred a day: modest volume.
CHow you could follow this Don't try to take the Seedance keyword. What's worth learning is the method: for the one or two weeks after a new model or web product breaks out, check whether the store search for it is only filled with low-rated wrappers. Then build an app that actually integrates that model and rates higher, with a title like "Powered by X" rather than impersonating it.

Search "seedance" on Google Play and the #2 result isn't ByteDance. It's an app from a Pakistani indie developer. It has racked up 21k installs in three months, and its product is no different from the other AI video wrappers. What's unusual is the naming: the same install package was first called StoryShort, then ArtList, and now "Seedance 2.0 & 2.5 - ArtGen." All three names belong to other companies. Below, we break down how the trick works, how much traffic it brings, and whether it's worth copying.
A five-star review praising "Art List"
On Oct 8, 2026, a user named Rey Ruizuy left a five-star review on this app's Google Play page: "Great app! I really like using Art List for my creative projects... Highly recommend it to creators and editors."
That review is still pinned at the top of the store page, but the app's title has since changed to "Seedance 2.0 & 2.5 - ArtGen." The Art List in the review is its previous name.
Scroll further and a user named BLACK REEL ENTERTAINMENT said on Oct 11: "Good, but it needs higher resolution." The developer, shahzaib ali, replied: "That depends on the AI model." In other words, the generation itself isn't his to control; he only builds the shell around it.
What it is
An Android AI video app: type a sentence to get a video, upload a photo to animate it, plus face swap and AI dance templates, exporting in Reels, TikTok and Shorts aspect ratios. The store description is generic and never names which model it generates with; the privacy policy says generation goes through a third-party AI service. No ads, in-app purchases $0.99 to $49.99 each.
The developer's registered address is Sadiq Abad in Punjab, Pakistan. Support is a personal Gmail, and the site shahzaibdev.com says "KMP & Android Specialist". The privacy policy is blunt: the app is developed and maintained by "an individual developer".
Three renames, three borrowed names
The package name com.storyshort.ai.video.generator was never changed. Only the title was:
| Timeline | Title | Whose name it's hijacking |
|---|---|---|
| Before the July listing | StoryShort - AI Video Generator | storyshort.ai, a web AI short-video product that claims 90k+ creators use it, from $39/month |
| 8 – October | ArtList : AI Video&Reel Maker | Artlist, the Israeli stock footage and AI video platform. In 2026 it pushed Seedance hard on TikTok, but has no official app on Play |
| Mid-to-late October to now | Seedance 2.0 & 2.5 - ArtGen | ByteDance's Seedance 2.5 video model, released Jul 31. ByteDance's official overseas entries are Dreamina and CapCut; there is no app called Seedance |
The privacy policy page is still titled "StoryShort - AI Video Generator" and was written in Jul 7, three weeks before Seedance 2.5 launched. So it didn't list on Seedance's coattails. It listed first, then renamed once Seedance got hot. On iOS, the same developer published "ArtList : AI Video&Reel Maker" in Sep 21, with a description identical to the Play one except ArtList was swapped to ArtGen. That iOS version has zero ratings to this day.
Swapping the name but keeping the package keeps the ratings, install history and store weight, and just points them at a new set of search terms. Now the "Seedance" in the title catches searches for seedance, and "ArtGen" reads like Artlist. Searching "artlist" on the US Play store, it ranks second.
This isn't his first time. Under the same developer account there's also "GPTZero : AI Detect & Humanize" (borrowing the AI text detector GPTZero's name, 10k+ installs), "Fish AI : Audio Clone TTS" (borrowing the AI voice tool Fish Audio's name, package literally named for celebrity voice cloning, 100k+ installs), and "Teal : Ai Resume Builder" (borrowing the resume tool Teal's name). There's also a Pakistani local electric bus timetable app with 100k+ installs, his only one under his own name. Together these apps total about 400k installs (AppBrain).
How the 21k installs happened
Look at the curve (8 – October is third-party estimates; from late October it's Google Play install counts). Aug 25 cumulative 645 installs, end of September 3,853, then 8 and 9 at dozens to over a hundred a day. In Oct 8 a single day jumped by about 2,000, cause unknown; after that it settled at 500 – 650 a day, Nov 6 to 21,150, and in the last 7 days +4,566.
From mid-October, the daily average is roughly five times the previous two months. That timing roughly matches the switch to the Seedance name (I couldn't confirm the exact date). The curve is very flat, unlike the pulses of paid campaigns; it looks like search traffic.
Now search. On Nov 6, searching "seedance" on the Play stores of the US, India and the Philippines, the top three were identical:
| Rank | App | Launched | Install (Google Play, 11-06) | Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Seedance 2.5 Video Generator(WECODE LTD.) | 2026-05 | 124k, +13.7k in 7 days | 2.6 |
| 2 | Seedance 2.0 & 2.5 - ArtGen (the subject of this piece) | 2026-08 | 21k, +4,566 over 7 days | 4.3 |
| 3 | SeeGen AI: Seedance 2.0 & 2.5(Fillog Studio) | 2026-03 | 112k, +4,277 over 7 days | 3.9 |
It launched months after its two neighbors and has one-sixth of their total, but its new installs over the last week are about even with third place. The only explanation I can see is ratings: in the same results screen, 4.3 stars sits next to 2.6 stars, so more people tap it and install.
How that 4.3 came about is worth a closer look. 600 There are only a handful of text reviews, and the top one praising "Art List" reads like a template. A common approach is an in-app popup asking only "are you satisfied?", then sending happy users to rate on the store (inference, not verified by unpacking the app).
Other channels are basically empty. TikTok shows no content from it, nobody has mentioned its name on X in three months, and there's no press coverage. I found no record of it advertising in the ad libraries I could check (not finding one doesn't prove there isn't one). The outside heat comes from others: Artlist's official TikTok post "Seedance is now on Artlist" got 23.6M views, and a Thai creator's August Seedance video got 20.4M views. That traffic doesn't point to this app, but it sends some people to Play to search "seedance" or "artlist", where they see it.
Where the money comes from
In-app purchases only, $0.99 to $49.99 each, no ads. In 15 countries it sits between #150 and #200 on the Video Players & Editors Top Grossing chart, and the ranks are nearly identical across countries (Hong Kong #156, Turkey #158, Thailand #163), which looks like the same aggregated chart. That's a low bar: video downloaders, IPTV players and birthday video templates sit there too. Being on it only shows someone is paying, not how much. Estimating from 21k installs and a few dollars of IAP, three-month revenue is most likely in the low thousands to $10–20K range (an estimate; no public figures).
For a solo developer in a small Pakistani city, that's not small money. But for someone looking for their next product, it hasn't "broken out".
Who it's competing with
| Product | Scale (Google Play, 11-06) | Compared with alternatives |
|---|---|---|
| WECODE / SeeGen and other same-name wrappers | 11 – 120k installs; at least 3 smaller ones including Jinhoo, SeeDance Flow and SeeAI | Same features, same title; it wins only on ratings |
| Dreamina (ByteDance official, built on Seedance) | 6.02M | The real thing, but no "Seedance" in its name, so it ranks below the wrappers for that search |
| CapCut (also integrates Seedance 2.5) | ₩2.06B | Big-company editor |
| Kling, Hailuo, PixVerse, Vidu | 2.33M – 79.6M | Own models + brand |
| Artlist, Higgsfield, OpenArt and a crowd of seedance-named websites | Web | Multi-model platforms; Artlist is itself the name being borrowed |
On r/generativeAI on Reddit, people are already warning others to avoid the randomly named "Video.ai" and "Seedance 2.0" wrapper apps on Google Play. This space filled up fast, and users are getting wary.
If it were you
What to take from this: the idea is not to chase the Seedance name. It shows that on Play, if a hot brand has no official app with its name, putting that name in your title can pull free search traffic. The one with the higher rating converts better. But this app itself only gets a few hundred installs a day and a thin layer of IAP, and the Seedance term already has 6+ wrappers splitting it.
Who it fits: Android developers who already have a few AI tool wrappers and can reskin and ship one in a day or two. Treat it as a launch-time keyword tactic, not a product direction.
Who it doesn't fit: anyone trying to build a product that keeps users and raises prices over time. This route has no barrier, and it runs into Google Play's impersonation policy. If a brand files a complaint, or the official team ships its own same-name app, the traffic disappears overnight and the account can be affected too. This developer's account has four or five borrowed-name apps, so the risk stacks.
How to do it: if you try, don't borrow a name. Borrow the gap. In the first two weeks after a new model or web product launches, search its name on Play and the App Store. If the results are only low-rated wrappers, build an app that actually integrates the model and can hold a rating above 4 stars, with a title like "Powered by [model]" rather than impersonating it. Acquisition still comes from store search. The real differences are two things: actually integrating the model (user reviews will say so), and out-rating the neighbors on the same screen.
Is the window still open? Seedance 2.5 has been out for over three months, so this term's window has mostly closed. The next opportunity is in the first one to two weeks after the next hot model launches.
Where this read could be wrong: ① Through early 2027, the top Play results for seedance were still these wrappers, and none had been removed. That suggests Google is largely not policing this kind of borrowed naming, so the tactic may last longer than I'd expect and is worth doing systematically. ② When ByteDance or Artlist shipped official apps, these wrappers' install curves didn't drop. That suggests traffic doesn't rely entirely on the name, and ratings and features matter more than I'd thought.

In the US, searching "artlist" ranks it #2. It isn't in the top 8 for the generic term "ai video generator." Installs are steady at 500–600 a day.
- Inferred spillover from brand buzz: Seedance 2.5 launched on 7-31, and Artlist, CapCut and Higgsfield pushed hard on TikTok (one Artlist post got 9-22 with 1.39M views), so users searched these terms on Google Play.

Bottom line
它没什么产品上的差别,也算不上真跑出来(3 个月 2.1 万安装,收入很薄)。能起来靠的是开发者的一贯打法:把别人的品牌名写进 App 标题,吃 Play 商店搜索流量。这个包先后叫过 StoryShort(撞名网页产品 storyshort.ai)、ArtList(撞名 Artlist.io)、现在叫「Seedance 2.0 & 2.5 - ArtGen」(撞名字节的 Seedance 模型)。

Install curve (estimated by AppstoreSpy; from the googleplay library app_day_ext; our own sampling starts at 10-29):

As the data shows, it ran at tens to a hundred-plus installs a day from 8 to September, rose to 500–650 a day in early October, and has held there since. Play's maxInstalls only updates every few days, so many days in app_day show 0. Read it as a multi-day average.
Treat the Top Grossing chart with caution: the rank is almost identical across 15 stores, which means they're pulling the same aggregate chart. The 150–200 band on the category Top Grossing chart is mixed with non-CapCut video downloaders, IPTV players and birthday video templates (in hk, Boom Loop is #155 and TravelAnimator is #157). The bar to get on there is low. Charting only tells you people are paying something; it doesn't tell you how much.
2. The renaming history: three borrowed names
| Phase | Name | Evidence | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Before launch | StoryShort - AI Video Generator | The privacy policy is hosted on blogspot, with the title "Privacy Policy \ | StoryShort - AI Video Generator", written 2026-07-07, before Seedance 2.5 was released (7-31). The package name com.storyshort.ai.video.generator has never been changed. (https://story-short-video-generator.blogspot.com/2026/07/privacy-policy-storyshort-ai-video.html) |
| 8–October | ArtList : AI Video&Reel Maker | APKPure has indexed v1.0.39 under the name "ArtList : AI Video&Reel Maker"; the Softonic page uses the same name; a 10-08 Play review says "I really enjoy using Art List"; and the same developer's iOS listing "ArtList : AI Video&Reel Maker" (id 6791519961) has a description that matches the current Play description word for word, except ArtList has been swapped for ArtGen. 2026-09-21 | |
| Now | Seedance 2.0 & 2.5 - ArtGen | Our library already had this name when we first sampled it on 10-29; a third-party page from late October shows "17K 4.22 (490)". We haven't verified the exact date of the change; it was roughly mid-to-late October (v1.0.54 was released 10-24). |
The three borrowed names:
- StoryShort (storyshort.ai): a real web AI short-video product that calls itself "Trusted by 90,000+ creators", with a Starter plan at $39/month. Its own video generator integrates Seedance 2.5 / Veo 3 / Kling v3. It has nothing to do with this app (this app is made by an individual developer in Pakistan, as the privacy policy states: "developed and maintained by an individual developer").
- Artlist(artlist.io):以色列的素材 / AI 视频平台,2026 年大力推 Seedance(TikTok 官方号「Try Seedance, now on Artlist」2,362 万播放;9-22「Seedance 2.5 Draft Mode is now live on Artlist」139 万播放;8 月还有「Artlist 一年无限量 Seedance 2.5」的推广)。Artlist 在 Play 上没有官方 App:美区搜「artlist」第 1 名是一个第三方「Artlist AI guide」,第 2 名就是这个 App。
- Seedance (ByteDance): Seedance 2.0 had a run overseas in February 2026; 2026-07-31 released Seedance 2.5 (videos up to 30 seconds, up to 50 reference inputs) (seed.bytedance.com, Wikipedia). ByteDance has no app called "Seedance" overseas. Its official entry points are Dreamina (6.02M installs on Play, listed 2026-06-02) and CapCut, so when users search "seedance" on Play, the top results are all third-party wrappers.
The developer's other apps follow the same pattern (Play developer page shahzaib ali; AppBrain lists 5 apps, roughly 400k installs in total):
| App | Whose name was borrowed | Scale |
|---|---|---|
| GPTZero : AI Detect & Humanize(com.zerogtp.ai.humanizer) | GPTZero (well-known AI text detector) | 10k+ installs, 1,430 ratings; there's also an iOS "GPTZero- AI Detector Humanizer" |
| Fish AI : Audio Clone TTS(com.voicecloner.celebritycloner) | Fish Audio (AI voice); the package name is "celebrity voice cloning" | 100k+ installs, 4,500 ratings |
| Teal : Ai Resume Builder | Teal (tealhq, resume tool) | 500+ |
| Cat Gatekeeper: App Blocker | The "cat guarding the door" anti-addiction concept that went viral online | Not verified |
| Green Electro: Bus Schedules | Original (Rahim Yar Khan's electric bus timetable in Pakistan; on iOS it reached #5 in the Pakistan free category) | 100k+ |
The developer's own site, shahzaibdev.com, describes them as a "KMP & Android Specialist"; GitHub / klibs host KMP libraries under ShahzaibAli02. So this is a reasonably skilled individual developer who mass-produces apps by combining popular brand names with generic AI wrappers.

Web
Seedance-named sites such as seegen.ai, seadance.io, seedancev2.ai, seavidgen.com, and seedanceai.net; multi-model platforms like Artlist, Higgsfield, OpenArt, fal, and Magnific; and on Reddit r/generativeAI, someone specifically warns to "avoid the random 'Video.ai' or 'Seedance 2.0' wrapper apps cluttering up Google Play".
Compared with them
- Compared with WECODE / SeeGen: the features are the same (text-to-video, image-to-video, templates). It differs in only two ways: its rating is 4.3, higher than 2.6 / 3.9; and its title includes "Seedance 2.0", "2.5" and "Art", so it catches both the seedance and artlist search terms. Its total installs are only 1/6 of theirs, but its 7-day new installs are close to SeeGen's (4,566 vs 4,277).
- Compared with Dreamina / Kling: no in-house model, no brand. Its only edge is that "Seedance" is in the name, so it ranks above the official entry points in search.
4. Where users come from
| Channel | Evidence | Confirmed? |
|---|---|---|
| Play Store search (borrowed brand terms) | In the US, "seedance" and "seedance 2.5" rank it #2, and "artlist" ranks it #2; for the generic "ai video generator", it's not in the top 8. The install curve is flat at 500–600 a day, which is what search traffic looks like. | Yes |
| Brand buzz (external) | After Seedance 2.5 (7-31) launched, Artlist, CapCut, Higgsfield and Dreamina pushed hard on TikTok (one Artlist post got 9-22 with 1.39M views; a Thai creator's post got 8-11 with 20.4M views). That traffic doesn't point to this app, but it does send some people to search "seedance" and "artlist" on Play. | Yes (indirectly) |
| Paid acquisition | Neither the Meta Ad Library nor the Google Ads Transparency Center has tracked it, and we didn't find the developer's name in either. The +2,003 single-day jump on 10-08 looks like short-term paid promotion or a recommendation; the cause is unknown. | No |
| TikTok / X / Reddit / press | TikHub searches for "ArtGen seedance" and "seedance app android" return nothing for it; x-radar returns 0 results each for "ArtGen" and "storyshort" over 90 days; no press coverage. | checked, none |
| Prompted reviews | Of 594 ratings, only 5 come with text. 10-08 That one, "Great app! I really enjoy using Art List… Highly recommended for creators and video editors", reads like a template. The ratings-to-installs ratio (about 2.8%) is within the normal range, so the in-app prompt most likely only asks happy users for a rating. | Suspected, unverified |
5. Why it got traction (at this scale)
- The name is the ad: "Seedance" has no official ByteDance package on Play, so anyone searching the term only sees third-party wrappers. The app puts the model name and version numbers (2.0 & 2.5) in its title, and it ranks #2 in the US, India and the Philippines (Play search, 11-06).
- Higher rating than same-name rivals: 4.3 versus WECODE's 2.6 and SeeGen's 3.9. On the same screen of results, that likely means more taps and installs. It may also have in-app prompts for good reviews (it has only 5 written reviews).
- One shell, two search terms: it was first called ArtList and is now "…- ArtGen". In the US, searching "artlist" still ranks it #2 (Artlist has no official Android app). From mid-October it has averaged 500–650 installs a day, about 5 times the 8–September rate when it was called StoryShort / ArtList. The timing roughly matches the switch to the Seedance name (the exact rename date is unverified).
- Developers have a copy-paste playbook: GPTZero, Fish AI, Teal, StoryShort, ArtList, Seedance, all borrowing famous brand names. Each app is small, but together they pull about 400k installs (AppBrain).
- Low bar to monetize: in-app purchases of $0.99–$49.99, no ads. Revenue is enough to chart #150–#200 in the VIDEO_PLAYERS Top Grossing rollup, but that spot is easy to reach, so the money is most likely thin.
6. Differentiation
The product itself has no differentiation: "text-to-video + image-to-video + face swap + AI dance templates," generic descriptions, and a privacy policy saying generation runs through third-party AI services. What really sets it apart is a distribution trick: titles stacked with trending model names and version numbers, plus an Artlist-style alias. Ratings hold at 4.3. That's why it gets traffic, but there's no moat: more than 6 same-name packages already exist, and if ByteDance puts Seedance on Play, or Google pulls them over trademarks, this traffic is gone.
7. Visibility
Almost nobody knows about it yet. No one is talking about it on X, there's no TikTok content, no press coverage, and no public revenue figures. Only auto-indexed pages like AppBrain, chrome-stats, Softonic, and APKPure. But the play of "stuffing popular model names into an app's title" is already crowded, and people on Reddit are complaining about it. So the information gap isn't in the idea, it's in which keyword nobody has grabbed yet.
8. What others can borrow
- Look for brand keywords with high search interest that have no official same-name app on Play or the App Store (new model names, web product names). Put them in the title with a version number. One package can be renamed along with the trend (StoryShort → ArtList → Seedance) while keeping the package name, ratings, and install history.
- Compare ratings against same-name rivals: 4.3 vs 2.6 on the same screen makes a big difference in search conversion.
- Risks: trademark complaints and Play's impersonation policy could take it down at any time, and once the official app launches, the traffic is gone.
9. Still unclear
- Which day it switched to Seedance titles (mid-to-late October, unverified); why 10-08 jumped +2,003 in a single day.
- Whether it spent on paid acquisition (our Meta and Google ad libraries don't track it).
- Actual revenue, subscription pricing, and which model API it connects to (whether it really calls Seedance).
- How much of the 4.3 score was prompted.
- On Facebook, an account called "AI With Zaib / Shah Zaib Ali" posts Seedance 2.5 tutorial videos. Unverified whether it's the same person or whether it drives installs to this app.
