Five weeks, 138k installs, one review saying "it bothers me every minute": Swift PDF is one part of a paid-acquisition machine
What it is A free PDF/Office reader, scanner and converter on Android, with ads and no in-app purchases.
Why it's taking off Android users who get a PDF attachment have to install an app that can open it. Once installed, it becomes the default opener, and every open shows an ad. So someone buys installs in cheap countries like Indonesia and Vietnam, runs one source code with a dozen skins spread across multiple developer accounts, and Swift PDF is one of them.
CHow you could play it Don't build the 170th skinned PDF reader. Either come in with paid-acquisition capacity and an account reserve, or do the part it does badly: a document viewer with restrained ads and a paid ad-free option, catching the users it drove away.

Swift PDF is a free PDF reader on Google Play, launched in Sep 29, with 138k installs in five weeks. Its rise has little to do with product quality. It's one package from a family of reskinned PDF readers, run by an e-commerce company in Suizhou, Hubei, that buys users in low-cost countries and earns back its spend through ads. Below: where its money comes from, what other packages share the same template, and why most indie developers shouldn't follow it.
A 125-person-upvoted one-star review
2026 October 16, a user named Efrain Castro left a one-line review on Swift PDF's store page: "I am tired of you bothering every minute." By November 6, that review had 125 "helpful" votes and was at the top of the page. The second review, from October 29, reads: "Useless, can't turn it off, I don't need it, trash, be careful, it will break your phone." The third just says "it's unbelievable."
This app has only 3 written reviews, and all three say the same thing. But its rating is 4.1 stars from 262 ratings (Google Play store page, 11-06): 5-star ratings 160, 1-star ratings 35, and zero 2-star ratings. The people who rated it and the people who wrote reviews sound like they're talking about two different apps.
Oct 16 also had a coincidence: a third-party estimate put about 13.6k new installs that day, its biggest peak since launch (AppstoreSpy estimate).
What it is
A do-everything document tool: it opens PDF, Word, Excel and PPT, scans documents with the camera into PDFs, converts images to PDF, merges and splits files, and reads documents aloud in the background. Free, with ads, no in-app purchases. Version 1.0.1, no updates since Oct 10.
On the store page the developer is listed as "XiaoBu", and the footer "About the developer" gives Suizhou Xiaobu E-commerce Co., Ltd. with an address in a residential unit in Zengdu District, Suizhou, Hubei, followed by "self-declared" in brackets. But the support email on the store page is [email protected], the site tawakals.com opens to an empty cloud storage bucket (404), and the privacy policy sits at sites.google.com/view/xiaobu12, a generic template covering "all apps under this developer account." The account has one other casual game that almost nobody installs.
In other words: a small Chinese company, using a foreign-sounding name on an email, an empty website and a template privacy policy, opened a Google Play developer account.
How the 138k installs happened
| Date | Total installs | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 10-12 | About 1,400 | AppstoreSpy estimate |
| 10-16 | About 33k | AppstoreSpy estimate |
| 10-25 | About 64k | AppstoreSpy estimate |
| 10-29 | 78,010 | Google Play installs |
| 11-02 | 116,173 | Google Play installs |
| 11-06 | 137,630 | Google Play installs, last 7 days: +59.6k |
It gets five to eight thousand installs a day, but its chart positions don't explain that volume. Its best rank is #62 in the Indonesia free "Tools" chart, the rest are Italy 139, Vietnam 161, Japan 197 (11-06). It has never entered any country's overall chart. Ranks 60 to 200 in Tools need only a few hundred installs a day. In the last 30 days, 0 posts on X mentioned "Swift PDF". TikTok has no videos about it, and the web only has auto-generated app stats pages.
Volume that charts, search and social media can't explain has one remaining source: bought (inferred; I haven't seen its ad creatives). The third-party daily curve also looks batch-run: over ten thousand one day, then a few hundred to a thousand a day for several days, then another spike over ten thousand (AppstoreSpy estimate; Google Play's own install counts refresh roughly every two days, so don't read too much into single-day figures). The countries it's likely buying in match where it charts: Indonesia, Vietnam, Turkey, Italy, Japan. The first three usually cost only a few cents per install.
Where the money comes from
The answer is in that bad review. On Android, PDF readers hold a position no other category has: the default opener. A user gets a PDF or Word attachment in WhatsApp or email, has no app that can open it, and installs one. After that, every tap on an attachment brings up the app, and every time it does, that's an app-open or interstitial ad.
If users don't uninstall, they keep seeing ads. "Bothers me every minute" and "can't turn it off" probably describe this, and there may also be more aggressive placements like lock-screen notifications or pop-ups outside the app (inferred; the reviews don't say which). If an install costs a few cents, the math works as long as the person sees the ads dozens of times before uninstalling.
It's not one app, it's a batch
From September to October 2026, at least 7 PDF readers on Google Play looked almost identical:
- Their names all follow "[Something] PDF - Reader & Tools": Swift, Pilot, Lumora, Nova, plus PDF Reader Viewer - Tools and Easy PDF Reader - PDF Tools;
- Their descriptions all use the "…to your Android phone or tablet" phrasing;
- Their support emails are all foreign-sounding names plus a string of numbers on Gmail;
- Their privacy policies all sit at sites.google.com/view/<name>12 style addresses;
- Their developer names differ: some are Chinese pinyin, some Indonesian, some registered as Australian or UK companies;
- All are ad-only, with versions still at 1.0.x.
Swift PDF is mid-table in this group:
| App | Launched | Install (Google Play, 11-06) |
|---|---|---|
| PDF Scanner Pro - Scan Docs | 09-16 | 850k |
| PDF Pilot - Reader & Tools | 09-18 | 730k, +7k in the last 330 days |
| PDF Reader Viewer - Tools | 09-29 (same day as Swift PDF) | 510k, #3 on Thailand's utilities chart |
| Swift PDF - Reader & Tools | 09-29 | 138k |
| Lumora PDF / Nova PDF | 10-14 / 09-30 | 70k / 20k |
Whether these packages belong to the same company can't be confirmed from outside. The naming, copy, email and privacy-page formats match, but I haven't seen hard evidence like the same ad config file or the same SDK signature (inferred, medium confidence). Even if they're not one company, it's the same source code and the same playbook.
The playbook: one source code, a dozen skins, spread across a dozen developer accounts, each with a little money behind it. Whichever package pays back fast gets more budget, and weak ones get dropped. If one account is banned, the others keep running. Swift PDF appears to get less budget than PDF Pilot and PDF Reader Viewer.
Who it's competing with
This is one of the most crowded categories on Google Play. Apps launched since July 2026 with PDF or Document Reader in the title total 169, with 77.9M cumulative installs and 7M new installs over the last 8.5 days combined (Google Play, 11-06).
The top is a different world: Adobe Acrobat Reader has 945M installs, WPS Office 832M, and they earn from brand and subscriptions. PDF Reader - Easy PDF, also ad-supported, has reached 433M installs and is still adding 7M over the last 1.85 days. Then there are the copycats riding the "Swift" name: Swift All Reader (3.86M), Swift PDF Reader & Converter (245k), and a Swift PDF Reader that was pulled 12 days after launch. Finally, the free rivals: Google Docs, Google Drive and Chrome can all open PDFs directly, they just don't fight for the "default opener" slot.
If it were you
The verdict: you can learn the full industrialized playbook for going global with tools, but for indie devs and small teams, following it isn't worth it.
Who it suits: teams already doing Android tool exports, with a paid-acquisition optimizer on staff, experience with ad mediation and eCPM tuning, and a set of developer accounts they can swap at will. For them it's just another category.
Who it doesn't suit: people hoping to win on product differentiation (differentiation isn't what drives growth in this category, and Swift PDF's one distinctive feature, background read-aloud, doesn't seem to matter to anyone); people without a paid-acquisition budget (there's no organic traffic to live on); people unwilling to take on account-ban risk (the playbook is a race against Google Play's ad and multi-account policies).
How to do it: if you do it at all, don't build the 170th PDF reader. The part worth considering is what it does badly: a non-annoying document viewer with restrained ads, where users can turn them off or pay once to remove them, aimed squarely at the people who got driven away in the reviews. Or pick a file type that can also become the "default opener" but isn't crowded yet.
How to get users: this category has no content channel to speak of, so it's paid acquisition only. Start by testing dozens of creatives with small budgets in cheap countries like Indonesia and Vietnam, work out what an install costs and how many ad views happen before uninstall, and only add money once one package pays back (inferred). If you want the "non-annoying" route, you could show up in Reddit and Android forum threads asking for an ad-free PDF reader, but the volume will be small.
Is there a window: no time window. This category has always existed and has always been crowded; Swift PDF's batch will likely be replaced by the next one within a few months.
What would show I got it wrong: (1) if within a month sister packages like PDF Pilot and PDF Reader Viewer get pulled or stop growing, Google is cleaning out this batch, and the paid-acquisition path is narrower than it looks; (2) conversely, if Swift PDF is still growing 50k+ a week into December and has shipped an update, the package is paying back and the playbook is more profitable than estimated; (3) if someone builds a similar "no-disturbance" app rated 4.5+ that reaches hundreds of thousands of installs without paid acquisition, then the "do what it does badly" route is real.

- Inferred Paid acquisition (low-cost countries, app promotion ads): the install curve rises and falls in steps (10-16 day +13.6k, then roughly 900 a day for several days; 10-25 day +13.4k, 10-28 day 26). Its chart ranks (TOOLS 62–197) can't support 5–8k installs a day. No ad library tracks this package and I haven't seen any creatives.
- Confirmed multi-account knockoff matrix: at least 7 apps share the name pattern "<Brand> PDF - Reader & Tools", the same description template, Gmail addresses with a Western first name + digits, and sites.google.com/view/<name>12 privacy pages, all ad-supported, all still on version 1.0.x; the developer site tawakals.com is an empty S3 bucket
- Confirmed store search / ASO: title and description are stuffed with PDF/Word/Excel/scan/convert/merge keywords; sits mid-to-low on the TOOLS category charts in 5 countries

Why Swift PDF - Reader & Tools (com.swift.pdftool.reader.leser) got traction
Research date 2026-11-06. Data sources: our googleplay library (app / app_snap / app_day_ext / chart_rank, collected daily from 2026-10-29; app_day_ext is historical backfill from AppstoreSpy, labeled "AppstoreSpy est."), Google Play store page, developer privacy policy page, Jina web search, x-radar, TikHub.
Bottom line
This isn't a product that grew on its own. It's a typical Android "PDF reader reskin" matrix knockoff: a shell developer account, template copy, ad monetization, and paid acquisition pushing installs up. It sits mid-to-low on the TOOLS category charts in Indonesia, Italy, Vietnam and Japan. 138k installs is small for this category; sibling apps from the same template released in the same period (PDF Pilot, PDF Reader Viewer - Tools, PDF Scanner Pro) have reached 50–850k.
1. What the product is
- An Android document tool: view PDF / Word / Excel / PPT, scan documents with the camera into PDFs, image-to-PDF, merge and split PDFs, read aloud in the background, local file management. Free, ad-supported, no in-app purchases (app_snap 2026-11-06: ad_supported=True, offers_iap=False).
- Developer "XiaoBu", store launch 2026-09-29, version 1.0.1 (last updated 2026-10-10, no updates since).
- The developer page lists only two apps: Swift PDF and a casual mini-game with almost no installs (Google Play developer page play.google.com/store/apps/developer?id=XiaoBu; the AppBrain summary surfaced via Jina lists it as "Osmium Dense, Casual, 5+"). This suggests it is an old or purchased account with a new product swapped in.
- The developer site tawakals.com is an empty S3 bucket (returns NoSuchKey 404). The contact email [email protected] follows the Western first name + digits Gmail pattern. The privacy policy sits at sites.google.com/view/xiaobu12/home and is a generic template covering "all apps under this developer account." All three are hallmarks of a throwaway account.
2. Growth data
| Date | Total installs | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 2026-10-12 | 1,411 | AppstoreSpy estimate |
| 2026-10-13 | 9,077 (+7.7k in one day) | AppstoreSpy estimate |
| 2026-10-16 | 33,336 (+13.6k that day) | AppstoreSpy estimate |
| 2026-10-20 | 40,764 (about +900 per day) | AppstoreSpy estimate |
| 2026-10-25 | 64,434 (+13.4k that day) | AppstoreSpy estimate |
| 2026-10-29 | 78,010 | googleplay library |
| 2026-11-02 | 116,173 | googleplay library |
| 2026-11-06 | 137,630 (last 7 days, +59,620) | googleplay library |
- The curve is lumpy: single-day peaks above 10k, each followed by a day under 1k (10-16 → 10-19, 10-25 → 10-28). Organic traffic and store search don't swing like that; it looks more like paid budgets switched on and off in batches.
- Chart position can't explain that volume. Its best rank is #62 on the Indonesia TOOLS Top Free chart; elsewhere it sits at #98–192 in Italy, #60–197 in Japan, #155–161 in Vietnam and #168 in Turkey (chart_rank 10-29 to 11-06), and it has never entered any country's overall chart. Ranks #60–200 on TOOLS need only a few hundred installs a day, yet it averages 5–8k a day, so most installs didn't come from the charts. They had to come from paid acquisition.
- 250 ratings with an average of 4.07, but only 3 written reviews (app_snap written_reviews=3). The 1-star and 3-star counts have stayed exactly the same, and 2-star has stayed at 0 (histogram [35,0,35,17,160]). The review sample is too small to read retention.
3. Competitors (same job: read PDF/Office files on a phone, scan, convert)
This is one of the most crowded utility categories on Google Play. In the googleplay library, apps with PDF or Document Reader in the title launched after 2026-07-01 number 169, with a combined 77.9M installs and 7M new installs in the last 8.5 days (googleplay library app_profile, 2026-11-06).
| Competitors | Platform | Launched | Scale (googleplay library 11-06) | How Swift PDF differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Adobe Acrobat Reader | Android | 2010 | 945M installs | Brand + subscriptions, revenue on the Top Grossing chart |
| WPS Office | Android | 2011 | 832M | Full office suite, subscription |
| Microsoft Word | Android | 2015 | ₩2.69B | Big-tech office, system-level distribution |
| PDF Reader - Easy PDF(QR Code Scanner.) | Android | 2022 | 433M, +7M in the last 1.85 days | Same ad-monetized tool-matrix model, but already at the top of the category |
| PDF Pilot - Reader & Tools(Suffron) | Android | 2026-09-18 | 730k, +7k in the last 330 days | Sibling apps from the same template, with 5× its volume |
| PDF Reader Viewer - Tools(HOSENR DEV) | Android | 2026-09-29 (launched the same day) | 510k, +7k in the last 280 days, #3 on Thailand TOOLS | Same template, pushed onto charts in 11 countries |
| PDF Scanner Pro - Scan Docs(com.zhuwei.scanner) | Android | 2026-09-16 | 850k | Same template, scanning-focused |
| Lumora PDF / Nova PDF - Reader & Tools | Android | 2026-10-14 / 09-30 | 70k / 20k | Later copycat with the same template and naming |
| Swift All Reader(VolarNext) | Android | 2025-10 | 3.86M | Used the "Swift" name earlier |
| System and big-tech built-ins | Big-company features | — | — | Google Files, Google Drive preview and Chrome can all open PDFs, but none of them has the "default opener + ads" monetization path |
4. Growth tactics
- Paid acquisition (inferred; no ad creatives directly observed): the evidence is the stepped daily install curve, ranks that don't match install volume, TOOLS-only presence, and appearances mostly in low-CPI or mixed markets like Indonesia, Vietnam, Turkey, Italy and Japan. Our Meta/Google/TikTok ad libraries only track products on our list, and this app isn't on it, so the absence of results doesn't mean no spend.
- Matrix (confirmed): from 2026-09 to October, at least 7 apps used the same playbook, highly consistent with each other:
- Names all follow "<brand word> PDF - Reader & Tools": Swift / Pilot / Lumora / Nova, plus Easy PDF Reader - PDF Tools and PDF Reader Viewer - Tools;
- Descriptions share the same phrasing, such as "…to your Android phone or tablet" / "helps Android phone and tablet users…";
- All use Gmail addresses with a Western first name + digits (carolinenelson135, isabella4433aa, bianca1279713440, hobertpruessnervgv008, torstenozuna829…);
- Privacy policies are hosted at addresses like sites.google.com/view/<name>12 (xiaobu12, suffron12);
- Developer names vary widely: XiaoBu, Suffron, HOSENR DEV, App Berkah Dev Belahan Jiwa (Indonesian), L & V CO PTY LTD, RESTITUTION LIMITED;
- All are ad_supported with no in-app purchases, and all are still on version 1.0.x.
Traces of pinyin and a Chinese team remain in the package names (com.zhuwei.scanner, XiaoBu), which suggests one Chinese utility-app-for-export team (or one outsourcer, one codebase) spreading spend across several accounts.
- Store search / ASO: the name and description are packed with PDF, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, scan, convert, merge and split keywords. This captures some search traffic, though probably a small share.
- Content and social: none found. x-radar shows 30 mentions of "Swift PDF" in the last 0 days. TikTok search returns products like SwifDoo. Online, there are only auto-generated stats pages from AppBrain, chrome-stats and Similarweb.
5. Why it got traction (and how far it went)
- The category demand is always there: Android phones lack a good system-level Office viewer, so users who receive PDFs or DOCX files over WhatsApp or email go looking for an app that can open them.
- There's a retention hook after install: the app registers as the default opener for PDF/Office files, so every later attachment tap may open it, and each open is an interstitial or app-open ad impression. That's how this category can pay back on ads alone.
- How the money comes back: buy installs in low-CPI countries (Indonesia, Vietnam, Turkey), where one install may cost just a few cents, then earn it back through ads (AdMob or a mediation stack) over the user lifetime. The matrix playbook launches many apps at once, scales budget on whichever has positive ROI, and drops the rest. In this matrix Swift PDF gets moderate budget and is still being tested (sibling PDF Pilot and HOSENR got more volume).
- Differentiation: essentially none. Features are nearly identical to sibling apps and dozens of similar ones; the only small feature is background read-aloud. Differentiation isn't why it grew. Distribution (paid acquisition plus spreading risk across many accounts) is.
6. How many people have seen it
Few people know about it: there's no press or X discussion, no public revenue, and it only shows up on auto-stats sites like AppBrain and Similarweb. The category itself is a red ocean, though, and "reskinned PDF reader + paid acquisition" is a publicly known playbook in the utility-app export industry, with plenty of practitioners.
- Copycats: same-template Lumora PDF (10-14) and Nova PDF (09-30). Several similar apps also borrow the "Swift" name: Swift PDF (com.swiftpdf.pdfreader, 11-02 update), Swift PDF Reader (com.swiftpdf.reader, which AppBrain shows was delisted 12 days after launch), Swift PDF Reader & Converter (ApHouseBD, launched 2026-02, 245k installs), and Swift PDF Viewer (KlikDari, 100k installs). It's unconfirmed whether these are the same operators.
7. What to borrow
- The standard playbook for ad-monetized utility apps: pick a must-have category that can serve as the system default opener (PDF, Office, scanning, file management); reskin one codebase into many apps spread across several developer accounts (lowers ban risk and lets you test creatives and names at the same time); buy installs in low-CPI countries and decide whether to add budget by each app's ROI.
- The barrier isn't technology. It's paid-acquisition optimization, ad-monetization eCPM, and a reserve of accounts that can be banned at any time. Teams without these capabilities rarely make money in this category.
8. Still unclear
- Specific ad creatives and channels (Google App Campaigns, Meta, Mintegral or otherwise) weren't observed. "Paid acquisition" is inferred from the curve and rankings.
- Whether the matrix is one entity: the evidence is only consistency in naming, copy, email and privacy-page format. There is no hard proof such as a shared app-ads.txt or a common SDK signature.
- No data on revenue, ROI or retention (only 3 reviews).
- The launch date 2026-09-29 is the store debut, but the account may have published other apps before, so a re-listed package can't be ruled out.
