A Hanoi guy shipped three PDF readers in the same week, and the best one hit 1.08M installs in seven weeks
What it is A free, ad-supported document reader on Android that opens PDF, Word, Excel, and PPT, plus scanning, signing, and merge/split tools.
Why it took off A Vietnamese team shipped three near-identical apps from different accounts the same week, bought installs in cheap markets like India, Nigeria, and South Africa, and cut budgets based on payback. It makes money from ads, and this was the best of the three on payback.
CHow you could follow it Don't copy the product. Copy the pipeline: pick a real need that the system doesn't serve well, that people reopen repeatedly, and that can carry ads. Ship two or three builds across accounts, buy in cheap markets, and add budget to whichever pays back. This only works if you can run paid acquisition.

All Docs - PDF Read & Edit is an entirely ordinary "all-in-one document reader" on Google Play. It launched in Sep 18 and had 1.08M installs by Nov 6. The product is no different from dozens of others. It got there because a Vietnamese team behind it ran a dozen or so utility apps across five or six developer accounts at once, opening and closing budgets market by market in cheap places like India, Nigeria, and South Africa. This piece explains how that playbook runs, where the money comes from, and why the space is already nearly saturated.
A review with over a thousand "helpful" votes
In Oct 10, a user named Ruwan Wijesekara left a review on its store page, in shaky English:
"Good, it tells the truth. Can you remove the ads? The ads say this app is bad, but the ads are lying."
By Nov 6, this review had 1,190 "helpful" votes and was the top review on the page. The second was from a user named suleiman saaka in Oct 16: "This app helped me make my attendance sheet and order files." It got 630 helpful votes. The third was just one line: "Works fine."
The three reviewers have names suggesting Sri Lanka, Ghana, and The Gambia. That's the user base: people in emerging markets who get a Word or Excel attachment on their phone, can't open it, and search the store for "PDF reader." What they care about most is too many ads.
What it is
A free, ad-supported document reader with no in-app purchases: it opens PDF, Word, Excel, PPT, and TXT, plus PDF tools for scanning, signing, merging, splitting, and image-to-PDF. No AI, no cloud, no subscription. The store copy is standard keyword stacking: "PDF Reader & PDF Viewer," "Word, Excel & PowerPoint Viewer," "Document Scanner," followed by an FAQ: "Do I need Microsoft Office? No." "Does it work offline? Yes." Each line targets a search term.
The developer account is called Gnurt, which reads as Trung backward. The developer listed at the bottom of the store page is Lưu Viết Trung, with an address in Nam Từ Liêm District, Hanoi. The "website" is a blogspot called catopialands, which is also attached to a cat idle game. It's a shell to fill in the store form.
How fast it grew, and how
| Timeline | Total installs | Daily new installs in those days |
|---|---|---|
| 10-09 | About 150k (third-party estimate) | — |
| 10-11 | Barely moving | About 50 |
| 10-12 ~ 14 | About 73k (estimated) | |
| 10-16 | Barely moving | About 360 |
| 10-17 ~ 24 | About 880k (10-24, estimated) | 37k ~ 69k (estimated) |
| 10-28 ~ 29 | Barely moving | About 90 |
| 10-30 ~ 11-05 | Slowly fell from 29k to 11k | |
| 11-06 | 1.08M (Google Play) | +125k in the last 7 days |
70k in one day, then a few dozen thousand, then tens of thousands again. Organic word of mouth doesn't grow like this. It looks like someone is opening and closing ad budgets based on payback numbers (inferred; the ad channels weren't directly observed).
The chart pattern follows the same rhythm. 10-29 it was only ranked #166 in India's Productivity free chart; from 11-02 to 11-04 it suddenly appeared in the Productivity charts of 15 or 16 countries at once: best in India at #23, Nigeria #31, Indonesia #33, South Africa #46, plus Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines, Mexico, Brazil, and Turkey. From 11-05 it dropped back to 7 countries: Nigeria 11-06 at #51, India #52, South Africa #57. Push hard, then pull back.
Two more details. 1.08M installs produced only 1,382 ratings, about 0.13%, and only 8 with written text. That low a ratio suggests bought traffic. The rating distribution is 1-star 293, 2-star 0, 3-star 125, 4-star 125, and 5-star 837:2. Exactly no one gave 3 stars, while 4 stars has the same count as 11-03. One day brought in 179 extra ratings (normally a dozen or twenty a day). The likely explanation is an in-app rating prompt that sends happy users to the store and holds unhappy ones back (inferred, not verified). That's how the score stays at 3.9.
Where the money comes from
Only one path: ads. The store page says "Contains ads" and there are no in-app purchases. The math for this kind of app works like this: each time a user opens an attachment from WhatsApp or email, the system launches it via "Open with," which counts as one ad impression. Files arrive every day, so users reopen the app repeatedly. In markets like India and Nigeria, where cost per install is low, one user who stays and views enough ads can pay back what was spent acquiring them (inferred; no actual per-install cost or ad revenue figures are public).
Between 10-23 and 10-29 it shipped three versions in a row, and the 1.0.6 update notes say "App size is less than half of before, faster startup." On low-end Android phones and in places where data is expensive, a build half the size converts more downloads. That's exactly what an acquisition team cares about.
The real product is the portfolio
Linking the package prefixes (t9, t9t, t9ta, t9s, T9Soft), the shared blogspot, and Gmail turns up at least 5 developer accounts and 12 apps under one team, all published after June 2026, totaling about 7.6M installs (Google Play, 11-06):
| App | Account | Launched | Installs |
|---|---|---|---|
| FileRecover Pro (file recovery) | Gnurt | 06-28 | 1.52M |
| FileRecover: Photo Restore | T9Studio | 08-09 | 1.37M |
| All Docs - PDF Read & Edit | Gnurt | 09-18 | 1.08M |
| Block Mania (match-and-clear mini game) | Devio Studio | 06-30 | 1.06M |
| Manori (comic reader) | notStudio | 08-05 | 610k |
| PDoc: PDF Reader | T9Studio | 09-18 | 590k |
| DocMint – PDF & Office Reader | T9Studio | 09-22 | 320k |
| Plus 5 more, including edge lighting, an IPTV player, wallpapers, and an English learning app | Accounts | 08 ~ October | 10 ~ 300k |
The middle three rows matter most: in the same week, one team put out three nearly identical document readers under different developer accounts. All Docs hit 1.08M, PDoc 590k, DocMint 320k. It looks like three packages pushed at once, with more money going to whichever one gets the best return (inference). Spreading them across accounts also has a perk: if one account gets banned, the others are unaffected.
So the real subject here isn't the All Docs app, it's this team's pipeline: pick a tool need that people search for year-round, ship a few reskinned packages, drop them into cheap markets, and keep the winners.
Who it's competing with
Document readers are one of the most crowded tool categories on Google Play, and it breaks into three tiers:
- Big players: Microsoft Word (2.69B installs), Adobe Acrobat Reader (940M), WPS Office (830M), plus Google's own Files and the PDF viewing built into Google Drive.
- Veteran ad-buying operations: apps that took off over 2020 to 2022 years using the same playbook, such as PDF Reader - Easy PDF (430M), EZTech's PDF Reader (250M), and Simple Design's PDF Reader (92.5M).
- This year's new packages: apps listed after June of 2026 with PDF / Doc / Office in the name and 800k installs, at least 40 on Google Play. PDF Reader & Document Viewer (QTStudio), listed only 10-13, is already at 7.11M; Document Reader: PDF & Office (Adamedia), listed 9-25, is at 3.98M; Reampo, also listed 10-13, gained +465k in the last 7 days, nearly 4 times All Docs' pace.
All Docs' 1.08M ranks only mid-pack among this year's new arrivals. In the same period, the category even had a PDF reader that hit #1 on the US tools chart using scare ads like "your phone is infected." When a category gets crowded enough to pull in gray-hat tactics, it means the money is there and so are the players.
Almost nobody outside has noticed it: no press coverage, no discussion on X, just auto-generated pages on APK download sites and app data sites. But here, nobody knowing about it doesn't mean there's an opening. Everyone is running the same playbook; no one has just written it down.
If it were you
In one line: this isn't a product opportunity, it's a textbook sample of a paid-acquisition business. A team that can buy media, has budget, and can mass-produce packages can copy the pipeline. Anyone hoping to break in by "building a better PDF reader" has basically no shot.
Who it's for: teams of 2 to 5 people already buying ads for tool apps, with experience on Google App Campaigns or ad network placements, who can calculate cost per install and ad return. Ideally like this Vietnamese team, able to maintain several developer accounts at once and ship a new package every few weeks.
Who it's not for: solo indie devs who can code but have never bought ads (there's no organic traffic here; stop spending for a few days and daily installs drop to double digits); anyone hoping to differentiate on features (users only need "it opens," and big-company free apps are already good enough); anyone counting on subscriptions (this crowd's willingness to pay is close to zero; they want the ads removed).
How to do it: don't just fixate on document readers. Learn the topic formula: a need the system doesn't cover well, that users open repeatedly, and where every open can carry an ad (file recovery, IPTV players, and file openers are all picks this team has made). Ship two or three packages for the same need at once, under different accounts, keep the package size minimal, and register as a file "open with" handler to tap into system entry points. If you must do documents, look for what this batch of new packages does poorly: offline translation of attachments, minority-language interfaces, turning scanned pages into editable Word files. Whether any of these can carry paid-acquisition returns is unverified (inference).
How to acquire users: paid ads, starting in cheap markets like India, Nigeria, South Africa, Indonesia, and the Philippines. Check returns daily; cut what doesn't pay back, scale what does. Write store page titles and descriptions around search terms like "PDF reader," "Word viewer," and "document scanner," and add an FAQ.
Is there a window: no clear window. This business has been running for 2020 years and is still running in 2026. The real time pressure comes from Google Play policy: the "all files access" permission, the data safety declaration, and the rating prompts. If any of those tightens, this whole batch of packages gets hit together.
What would show I'm wrong: ① All Docs, PDoc, and DocMint are all delisted or stop updating within a month, which would suggest Google is cracking down on multi-account matrices; ② installs stay above several thousand a day after paid spend stops, which would mean real organic search and retention, and the product is worth more than it looks; ③ conversely, if by late December the same team has put a fourth or fifth document reader up under new accounts, the category's returns still pencil out and buyers keep adding money.
Data and sources: installs, ratings, and chart data come from public Google Play data (10-29 to 11-06). Daily installs before mid-October are third-party estimates. Store page copy, reviews, and developer info come from Google Play pages (11-06). Apps from the same team were matched by package name, website, and email. Ad channels, cost per install, and ad revenue have no public data, so related claims in this piece are inference.

- Inference Paid acquisition (likely Google App Campaigns or ad networks): the install curve moves in on-off steps (10-11, 10-16, 10-28/29 nearly flatlined at double-digit daily gains, while other days ran 1.5~73k/day); 11-02~04 surged into the 15 China category chart at the same time and then dropped; rating-to-install ratio is about 0.13%, with only 8 written reviews.
- Confirmed Multi-account matrix / multiple similar packages: Gnurt, T9Studio, SMARTSOL, notStudio, and Devio Studio share the t9* package name prefix, blogspot websites, and Gmail addresses. The 12 apps total about 7.6M installs, and 3 of them are document readers listed the same week.
- Confirmed Store search ASO: titles and descriptions are stuffed with PDF reader / Word / Excel / PPT viewer / scanner / sign / merge / split / offline keywords, written as an FAQ aimed at search intent.
- Inference Review solicitation: rating histogram [293,0,125,125,837]: 2-star count exactly matches 0-star and 3/4-star counts; on 11-03 ratings jumped +179 in a single day (normally 15~26).
- Inference Content / influencers / media / X: zero results in X corpora; the web shows only auto-indexed pages from APK sites and data sites.
Why All Docs - PDF Read & Edit (com.t9t.alldocreader) could scale
In one line: a small Vietnamese team uses multiple developer accounts to bulk-launch "all-in-one document reader" tool apps, then ramps ad spend in tiers in cheap-acquisition markets like India, Nigeria, South Africa, and Indonesia, monetizing through ads. The product itself is templated commodity; the real edge is the playbook (matrix + paid acquisition), not the product.
1. Basic data (source: googleplay library, 2026-10-29 to 11-06; early curve estimated by AppstoreSpy)
- Developer: Gnurt (dev id 5127984736275479766), first store listing 2026-09-18, Productivity category. Free, ad-supported, no in-app purchases (app_snap: offers_iap=False, ad_supported=True).
- Global cumulative installs 1,082,172 (11-06), +125,196 over the last 7 days; 1,382 ratings, 3.9 stars, only 8 written reviews.
- Install curve (AppstoreSpy estimate,
app_day_ext): 10-09 about 149k → 10-11 barely moves (about 52 per day) → 10-12~14 about 73k/day → 10-16 stops again (363) → 10-17~24 3.7~69k/day → 10-24 reaches 877k → 10-28/29 nearly stops again (91/day) → 10-30/31 about 29k/day → 11-01~03 about 15k/day → 11-04/05 about 11k/day. The curve is a stair-step of on-off-on, and the flat days drop almost to zero. That's not the shape of organic growth or word of mouth; it's the shape of a budget switch being flipped. - Charts (chart_rank): 10-29 first appeared only at #166 on India's Productivity free chart; 11-02~04 it spread at once to 15~16 countries (best in India #23, Nigeria #31, Indonesia #33, South Africa #46, Vietnam #70, Thailand #75, Philippines #73, plus ranks in the 120~199 range in Argentina, Mexico, Brazil, Germany, Turkey, Malaysia, Singapore, Australia, UAE, and the Netherlands). From 11-05 it pulled back to 7 countries, with rankings sliding (11-06: Nigeria #51, India #52, South Africa #57, Indonesia #85). The chart rhythm matches the install steps.
- Rating histogram (1~5 stars): [293, 0, 125, 125, 837]. Among 1,382 ratings, the 2-star count matches the 0,3-star and 4-star counts exactly, and 11-03 saw +179 ratings in one day (other days 15~26). This is most likely caused by a custom in-app rating prompt (soliciting good reviews / steering away bad ones); the exact mechanism is unverified.
- The store page's data safety section says "no data collected, no sharing with third parties" yet the app is labeled "contains ads." Ad SDKs typically collect device identifiers, so this declaration is probably inaccurate (unverified).
- Most-helpful review on the store page (1,190 people found it useful): "please can you remove ads ... the ads say lies", showing users are noticing heavy ad load. (Play page, read via r.jina.ai)
2. Who it is: a Vietnamese tool-app matrix

- At least 5 developer accounts and 12 apps, about 7.6M installs in total, all listed after June of 2026. The contact emails on the developer pages, [email protected] and names in other emails (trung, nguyen hung, huong le minh, vu hoai), point to a Vietnamese team.
- The same team listed 3 document readers in the same week (All Docs, PDoc, DocMint, about 1.99M installs combined), each under a different account and different "website," competing for the same search terms and ad audiences. All Docs performed best of the three.
- The "website" catopialands.blogspot.com is also tied to a cat idle game called Catopia Land (another email tba65780@), showing these blogspot sites are just shells filled in for store listings.
3. Competitors
Document readers are one of the most crowded tool categories on Google Play:
- Big players: Microsoft Word (2.69B installs), WPS Office (830M), Adobe Acrobat Reader (940M), plus the PDF viewing built into Google Docs / Drive / Files.
- Legacy tool matrix: PDF Reader - Easy PDF from the "QR Code Scanner." account (430M), Document Reader & PDF Editor (130M); PDF Reader from EZTech (250M); PDF Reader from Simple Design (92.5M). All launched in 2020~2022 and run the same paid acquisition + ads playbook.
- New entries from 2026: on Google Play, apps launched after 2026-06, with PDF / Doc / Office in the name and ≥ 800k installs. At least 40 of them, for example PDF Reader & Document Viewer (QTStudio, launched 10-13, 7.11M), PDF Reader - Viewer, Edit PDF (Zenstack, 5.17M), PDF Box (Wah Hub, 4.25M), Document Reader: PDF & Office (Adamedia, 3.98M), Reampo (DongRuaLabs, launched 10-13, 860k, 7 days +465k), and two scanners from Radiant Retail (7 days +480k, +410k). All Docs' 1.08M ranks only mid-pack in this group.
- Feature-wise, All Docs is almost identical to these: PDF/Word/Excel/PPT/TXT viewing, scanning, signing, merging, splitting, image-to-PDF. No AI, no cloud, no subscription.
4. Where users come from
| Channel | Evidence | Confirmed? |
|---|---|---|
| Paid acquisition (most likely Google App Campaigns / ad networks) | The install curve shows budget-switch steps: daily installs drop to double digits within days of pausing. 11-02~04 rushed into the top 15 country charts at once, then fell back. Users are mainly in India, Nigeria, South Africa, Indonesia, and the Philippines, where CPI is cheap. The rating-to-install ratio is only about 0.13%, and just 8 written reviews: typical non-organic traffic. | Inferred, not directly seen in the ad library (the googleads library doesn't track this developer) |
| Account matrix / multiple similar apps | The same team has 3 document-reader apps plus several utility apps, spread across the Gnurt, T9Studio, SMARTSOL, notStudio, and Devio Studio names. | Confirmed (googleplay library) |
| Store search / ASO | Titles and descriptions are packed with "PDF reader / Word viewer / Excel viewer / PPT viewer / document scanner / sign / merge / split / offline" keywords. The FAQ-style copy is written to match search intent. | Confirmed (store page text) |
| System "Open with" menu | Once installed, the app shows up in the open-with options for PDF/DOCX. It gets invoked when WhatsApp receives a file, which drives usage and ad impressions. It requires the "All files access" permission. | Inferred |
| Prompted reviews | 2 stars at 0, the same star count as 3/4, 11-03 single-day rating +179 | Inferred, mechanism unverified |
| Content / creators / media / X | Searching the X corpus for "Gnurt" / "alldocreader" returns zero results. On the web there are only APK sites and auto-indexed pages from AppBrain and Softonic. | Not found |
5. Why it charted
- The need is real and constant: in emerging markets, many users receive PDFs and Office files via WhatsApp and email, with no good way to open them on their phones. System built-ins can only view PDFs, not Word/Excel/PPT. The category keeps opening new paid-acquisition gaps.
- Paid acquisition + ad monetization pencils out in cheap markets: the main markets are India, Nigeria, South Africa, Indonesia, and the Philippines. Each file opened is an ad impression, users come back repeatedly, and ARPU covers the low CPI. The steps in the curve suggest budget is raised and cut based on payback.
- The matrix spreads risk and finds the winner: 3 nearly identical document readers launched the same week. Whichever pays back best gets more budget, and the other two get less. If one account gets banned, the others aren't affected.
- Fast package iteration: 10-23 to 10-29 shipped 1.0.4 → 1.0.6,1.0.6, with release notes saying "package size cut by more than half, faster startup." That matters for conversion on low-end devices and in markets where data is expensive.
- Rating prompts push the score up to 3.9, keeping store-page conversion from getting too bad (inferred).
6. Differentiation
- No real product differentiation. Features, copy, and screenshot style are identical to dozens of competitors. "Offline, files not uploaded" is standard pitch language for this category.
- What actually differs is the playbook: a Vietnamese team running a matrix, picking cheap markets, switching budget on and off by payback, and testing multiple packages to find winners. So it's distribution and ops efficiency that make it work, not the product.
- There's no moat either: the same playbook is run by at least dozens of companies over 2026 years (see section 3), and a new package drops off the charts as soon as spend stops (ranking starts falling from 11-05).
7. Visibility
- Still almost unknown: no press coverage, zero discussion on X, no public revenue. It's only auto-indexed on APK sites and app data sites (AppBrain, Softonic, Apptopia, and #13 in appfigures' Venezuela Productivity chart).
- But "nobody knows about it" doesn't mean there's an opening: the category is already crowded, and everyone runs the same playbook.
8. What to borrow
- The basics of paid acquisition for utility apps: pick a need that the system doesn't cover well, that people use repeatedly, and that can carry ads; prove payback first in cheap emerging markets; test multiple packages and accounts on the same need and scale the winner; cut package size to convert on low-end devices.
- Use the "open with" entry point as a high-frequency touchpoint: register as the handler for PDF/Office files, so every time someone sends a file in a chat app, your app gets invoked.
9. Uncertain
- The actual paid acquisition channels (Google UAC, Unity, Mintegral, or something else) and cost per install: not tracked by the ad library, not verified.
- Ad revenue and payback period: no public data.
- How the 2-star histogram at 0 was produced (a custom rating prompt or something else): not verified.
- Whether the "no data collected" declaration in the data safety section conflicts with the ad SDKs: not verified by unpacking the APK.
- The early curve (before 10-09) comes from AppstoreSpy estimates. Single-day figures are not reliable.
