# An old video with a "new link" attached: Ethiopians sell "free calls home" on Facebook, and the app is just a shell that can be swapped at any time

**What it is** An Android app dressed up as an "e-commerce / tech tutorial" tool. In practice, it's a place where Ethiopian laborers in the Gulf look up guides for "free internet and free calls," with five ad networks stacked inside.

**Why it took off** The Gulf blocks internet calling, and Ethiopian laborers want to call home for free. Amharic- and Oromo-speaking Facebook creators use old videos with hundreds of thousands of views to drive traffic, and the link is swapped to whichever disguised app was most recently listed.

**D** **How you could follow it** Don't copy the disguised shells or the "free" promise. Learn the distribution structure instead: find a group abroad that speaks a minor language and has a real need created by a block, build a compliant tool that actually solves the problem, make short videos with that group's own native-language creators, and keep the link somewhere you can change it.

D grade: it took off through an Ethiopian creator network that followers can't replicate, plus misleading promises. Over a dozen developers and hundreds of shells already hold thirty to forty spots in Saudi Education charts. Each app lasts only a few months and carries the risk of full account bans. Only the distribution structure is worth studying. Still almost unknown

Data (updated daily) · first launch 2026-09-24 · 11-07 installs 4,936

Android · Total installs worldwide

Data 2026-10-29 → 2026-11-07 (10 days, 10 observations). Google's detail page only refreshes install counts every other day, so a flat day doesn't mean nobody installed.

Ola Pro is an "e-commerce / dropshipping tutorial" app that went live on Google Play in Sep 24. By Nov 6 it had 4,936 installs, with the last 7 days accounting for 3,097 of them. Its store description has nothing to do with why people download it. The people installing it are Ethiopians working in Saudi Arabia and the UAE, brought in by a line in native-language short videos: "free internet, free international calls." This isn't one app succeeding. It's a business that more than a dozen developers are already running. Below: how it works, where the money comes from, how crowded it is, and which parts are worth learning from.

### A May video, linked to an app launched in September

In 2026, on May 2, a Facebook page called Hawisha posted a Reel. By Nov 6 it had 127K views, 2,600 reactions and 88 comments. The caption was just one line with a Play Store link, followed by a string of emojis and tags like #reelsviral #fbviral. The video, in Amharic, explains how to get free internet in Saudi Arabia and the UAE without a SIM card.

The odd part is the link. It points to com.tafzone.ola_pro, which is Ola Pro, and Ola Pro was listed in Sep 24. A May video couldn't have linked to an app that didn't exist until September when it was posted. The only explanation is that the link was changed later. This old hit keeps generating traffic, and whichever app is newly listed gets the link.

The top comment is from a user who asked in Amharic 26 weeks ago: "What's the deal with the account-ban warnings? Is it real?"

### What it is

On the store page, Ola Pro is a "digital learning and education center": modern e-commerce techniques, dropshipping operating frameworks, creator-economy tools, and phone tech guides, aimed at "online entrepreneurs, content creators, and digital marketers." The feature list says "beautiful interface," "beautiful onboarding," "categorized content," "search," and "favorites." It's categorized as education, contains ads, has no in-app purchases, and has no ratings or reviews (Google Play store page, 11-06).

To users, Ola Pro is something else. The video flow goes roughly like this: "Download some Pro / Tips app from Play → search a keyword inside the app → follow the steps and you'll get free calls and free internet." The app is a box of guides. To reach the one you want, users click through page after page, and each step can trigger an ad.

The privacy policy lists ad and push SDKs: AdMob, Facebook, Unity, AppLovin, StartApp, and OneSignal (privacy policy on tafzone.guleletech.com). A "tutorial" app with five ad networks stacked on top.

Whether the app actually contains only articles or also hands out VPN configs or tunnel parameters: not verified, since the app wasn't installed to check (unverified). Under the same Boni video with 44k views, the first comment is a single word, "አይሰራም", which means "doesn't work" in Amharic.

### Why people install it: the Gulf blocks internet calling

Saudi Arabia and the UAE have long restricted WhatsApp calls, imo, and similar internet-calling apps. A large Ethiopian population of domestic and contract workers there either pays international call rates to reach family or looks for VPNs and tunneling apps. For them, "free calls home" is a real and urgent need, and no compliant store listing directly meets it.

This sentence has become a fixed script. Lots of accounts are mass-posting the same English line, "Connect globally with FREE 🆓📞🇸🇦 Make international calls, share moments, and more", with Amharic or Oromo narration on top. One account called Shemsiya jemal posted a video promoting TAF ZONE's other app, Lego Pro, that got 142k views; the caption opens with a line in Oromo that roughly means "the App link is below". The same account has other videos at 369k, 244k and 109k views. Selamawit has one at 162k, and Boni has one at 44k. Other apps run the same playbook: Ardi Soft's Grace Tips, whose video says "download Grace Tips, search BFS in the App, then..."; Info Tips teaches "free data" in Oromo.

### How fast it grew

| Date | Total installs | Added that day |
|---|---|---|
| 10-29 | 1,839 | — |
| 10-31 | 3,536 | +1,697 |
| 11-03 | 4,377 | +841 |
| 11-05 | 4,529 | +152 |
| 11-06 | 4,936 | +407 |

Source: Google Play installs, 10-29 to 11-06. Days not listed in between were 0. Third-party estimate: roughly 492 cumulative by Oct 18.

The numbers are small, but the shape is telling: it rises in steps, with flat days in between. That looks more like "one Reel swapped in its link and brought a wave" than sustained ad spend (inference). No ads found in the Meta, TikTok or Google ad libraries. Searching tafzone on TikTok returns 0 results, nobody mentions it on X, and there is no press coverage.

On the charts, it only appeared in two places: the Saudi education Top Free chart, ranks 87 to 179, and the UAE education Top Free chart, where it hit #16 in Oct 29 before falling outside the top 173 (Google Play charts, 10-29 to 11-06). The Gulf subcategory charts have a low bar: a few hundred installs a day gets you into the top 100.

### Who is behind it

TAF ZONE has 13 near-identical "X Pro" apps built from the same template: NorPro with 200k installs, Numan Pro with 95k, plus Sonan, Gojo Tips, Omar, Meba, Major, Toga, Navi Star, Nora and Tolan. The earliest went live in April 2026 years ago. Together they total roughly 520k installs (Google Play, 11-06). Web searches also turn up more com.tafzone packages such as Tiger, Lego, Sudi and Vita Star.

Its website is tafzone.guleletech.com, a subdomain of Gulele Tech. Gulele is a district of Addis Ababa, and Gulele Tech has been making Tips-style apps like Lomi Tips and Orbit Tips since August 2024. TAF ZONE is most likely a new developer account from the Gulele group, or a contractor for them (inference, based on the subdomain alone).

The advantage of this setup is obvious: the traffic lives in the videos, the money lives in the app, and the two are separate. When Google pulls one app, you point the video links at the next one and the traffic keeps coming.

### Who it's competing with

There is no real brand competition, just a whole field of near-identical clones. The names all follow "X Pro / X Tips / X Tech / X Plus", and the descriptions all say things like "tech tips, AI insights, app reviews" or e-commerce tutorials (Google Play installs, 11-06):

| Developer | Apps | Total installs | Earliest listing | Flagship app |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kana Press + Kana Plus | 12 | About 4M | 2025-02 | Mirinda Pro 1.51M, Capital Pro 1.26M, Takoma HD 1.08M |
| Gulele Tech | 6 | 1.72M | 2024-08 | Lomi Tips 550k, Orbit Tips 510k |
| Ardi Soft | 4+ | 880k+ | 2025-05 | Info Tips 410k, Prime Tech 400k |
| Ethio App Lab | 2 | 670k | 2026-04 | Hulum App 440k |
| Abrelo Soft | 2 | 480k | 2025-08 | Harmee 310k |
| TAF ZONE | 13 | 520k | 2026-04 | NorPro 200k |

Also Etclicks, ETHIOSOFT, Toftex, Hagere Techs and others, each in the hundreds of thousands. From Oct 29 to Nov 6, 27 to 38 of the 200 spots on the Saudi education Top Free chart each day went to apps like these.

TAF ZONE came late to this, and Ola Pro is a mid-tier app within it. What actually solves the calling problem is imo, WhatsApp, and a range of free VPN and tunnel apps. These clones just sit in the middle and skim traffic.

### Where the money comes from

Only ads. A user flips through several pages looking for a guide and sees a few interstitials. Traffic is cheap, development cost is close to zero, and one template with a new name and icon becomes a new app. At Gulf ad rates and with a single account accumulating hundreds of thousands of installs, one developer account might bring in a few thousand dollars a month (estimate, pure inference, no public revenue data). How the influencers and developers split the money, whether it's the same group paid per install or a cut of ad revenue, is not visible from the outside (unverified).

### If it were you

**Verdict:** You can learn a distribution structure here, but don't copy the business itself. It runs on an existing network of Ethiopian-language influencers plus a promise that won't hold up to scrutiny. The niche already has a dozen-plus companies and over a hundred clones. Three or four of the Saudi education chart spots go to these apps every day, and TAF ZONE is itself a follower.

**Who it suits:** People already inside a diaspora community who have relationships with native-language video creators and want to study "separating the traffic asset from the monetization asset". Or teams building tools for migrant workers, students abroad or immigrants who want a real, urgent need to target.

**Who it doesn't suit:** Anyone outside this circle who can't get these creators: you can build an identical app and still won't have those pages to swap links on. Anyone aiming for a long-term product and building reputation: each app here lasts only a few months, and the top review is "doesn't work". Anyone who can't stomach ban risk: Google bans accounts wholesale for duplicate-content clones and misleading descriptions, and Saudi Arabia carries legal risk for bypassing VoIP restrictions.

**How to do it:** Copying the promise and the clone model is pointless. Three things are worth taking: find a community abroad that speaks a minority language and has a real, underserved or blocked need (South Asian or Southeast Asian workers in the Gulf, a migrant group in a European country); build something that genuinely solves the problem and complies with the rules, such as legal low-cost international calling, remittance rate comparison, or document and visa guides, not a shell full of tips; and distribute through short videos from that community's own native-language creators, not store search.

**How to acquire users:** Native-language Facebook Reels and TikTok creators. Videos in the hundreds of thousands of views are common in these communities. Put the link somewhere you can change it (bio, pinned comment, landing page), so one old hit keeps delivering traffic. Once live, a few hundred installs can get you into the top 100 of a small country's subcategory chart and pick up some organic store traffic.

**Timing:** For clones like Ola Pro there is no window; their lifespan is a few months. For the path of "switch to a different community and build something real" there is no obvious deadline, but the earlier you establish yourself in that community's creator circles, the better.

**Signs you've misread this:** ① After Google mass-removed accounts like TAF ZONE and Kana Press, apps of this type quickly went back to over thirty a day on the Saudi education chart. That would mean the model is tougher than it looks and clones are cheaper to replace than the verdict assumes. ② Someone builds a compliant, genuinely useful tool for the same community and, through the same native-language creators, reaches several hundred thousand installs. That would mean the distribution in this community pays off for real need, not for the "free" hook. ③ Conversely, if installs for this type of app shrink across the board over a few months and fewer appear on the charts, users have been trained by "doesn't work", and the distribution structure itself is breaking down.

Competitors

| Name | Where | Launched | Scale | How it differs from this one |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kana Press (Mirinda Pro, Capital Pro, etc.) | Android | 2025-02 | 6 apps, about 3.4M installs | Same template and playbook, earlier entry and bigger volume. Ola Pro is no different. |
| Gulele Tech (Lomi Tips, Orbit Tips) | Android | 2024-08 | 6 apps in the database, 1.72M installs | Likely parent of TAF ZONE (its website is a guleletech subdomain) and an early mover on this model. |
| Ardi Soft (Info Tips, Grace Tips, Suke Plus) | Android | 2025-05 | 880k+ installs. Suke Plus ranked #32 on the Saudi education chart. | Same "search the keyword in the app to find the guide" Reels script. |
| Ethio App Lab (Hulum App, Koka Pro) | Android | 2026-04 | 670k installs | Same template, bigger volume per app. |
| imo / WhatsApp + free VPNs (Urban VPN, AM Tunnel Lite, etc.) | Other | Already existed | Hundreds of millions in scale | These are the tools that actually solve the calling need. The Tips clones are guide shells that intercept traffic in the middle. |

Where users come from

- **Verified** **Facebook Reels from native-language creators (Amharic / Oromo)** : Hawisha / Dijtaltech's Reel caption links to ola_pro, 127k views. Shemsiya jemal promotes tafzone.lego_pro, 142k views. The same "Connect globally with FREE 🇸🇦" script is being mass-posted by many accounts.

- **Verified** **Rotating links on old hit videos** : Hawisha's Reel was posted on 2026-05-02 but carries the ola_pro link, which only went live in Sep 24.

- Inference **Organic traffic from the subcategory charts** : the Saudi and UAE education Top Free charts have a low bar, and charting may bring a small amount of organic installs.

- Inference **Paid ads** : none found in the ad libraries (those libraries only track listed products).

## Why Ola Pro (com.tafzone.ola_pro) is getting traction

> Channel: Google Play | Developer: TAF ZONE | Launched: 2026-09-24 | Research date: 2026-11-06

### Bottom line

Ola Pro is not an e-commerce or dropshipping tutorial app that wins on content. It's another clone of a mature playbook in Ethiopian developer circles. Ethiopian creators on Facebook Reels (Amharic / Oromo) tell fellow Ethiopians working in Saudi Arabia and the UAE that they can get free internet and free international calls (imo / WhatsApp calling is blocked in the Gulf). The first step in the tutorial is "go to Play and download some Tips / Pro app". Users install it and look for guides inside, and the developer earns from ads in the app. The "e-commerce / creator economy" description is just a line to get past Google review and has nothing to do with why users download.

The reason given at recall, "Arabic instructor course white-labeling + a matrix", is **wrong** . The people driving the traffic are Ethiopian, not Arabic instructors. The users are Ethiopian laborers in the Gulf, not people there to study e-commerce.

### 1. Data (googleplay library, 2026-11-06)

- Cumulative global installs: 2026-10-29 was 1,839,11-06, and 4,936,7 days later it was up 3,097. In AppstoreSpy's historical estimates, the app added about 866 in a single day around 10-18 492,10-20 (app_day_ext).

- Growth came in steps: 10-31 +1,697,11-03 +841,11-06 +407, with flat days in between. That fits the pattern of "one Reel went viral and brought a wave", not sustained ad spend.

- Charts: Saudi education Top Free chart ranks 87–179, UAE education Top Free chart #10-29 at its peak, then falling outside the top 16... 173 (chart_rank). Only these two storefronts charted.

- No ratings and no reviews. Version 2.0.0. Marked as containing ads, no in-app purchases (app_snap).

- SDKs listed in the privacy policy: AdMob, Facebook, Unity, OneSignal, AppLovin, StartApp, which means it is stacking several ad networks (https://tafzone.guleletech.com/OlaPro.html).

### 2. Competitors: an entire Ethiopian "Tips clone app" ecosystem

There's no brand competitor in this category. What does the same job is dozens of near-identical clone apps, named "X Pro / X Tips / X Tech / X Plus", with descriptions reading "tech tips, AI insights, app reviews". The main ones visible in the database:

| Developer | Apps in library | Total installs | Earliest listing | Flagship app |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kana Press (domain tiktokgx.com) + Kana Plus | 6+6 | about 3.4M + 620k | 2025-02 | Mirinda Pro 1.51M, Capital Pro 1.26M, Takoma HD 1.08M |
| Gulele Tech(com.guleletech / com.berhansoft) | 6 | 1.72M | 2024-08 | Lomi Tips 550k, Orbit Tips 510k |
| Ardi Soft | 4+ (actually more) | 880k+ | 2025-05 | Info Tips 410k, Prime Tech 400k, Suke Plus (32st on the Saudi Education chart) |
| Ethio App Lab | 2 | 670k | 2026-04 | Hulum App 440k |
| Abrelo Soft(4kilo.net) | 2 | 480k | 2025-08 | Harmee 310k |
| Etclicks / ETHIOSOFT / Toftex / Hagere Techs and others | several | 10–400k each | 2023-12 to 2026 | Pro Tech, Hahu Tech, Mizan Pro, Gara Tips |
| **TAF ZONE (this article)** | 13 | 520k | 2026-04 | NorPro 200k, Numan Pro 95k |

- Scale: 2026-11-06 of the 200 slots on the Saudi Education free chart, 27–38 of them held by apps like this (10-29 to 11-06 daily figures, tallied across the developers above).

- TAF ZONE's site tafzone.**guleletech** .com is a subdomain under the Gulele Tech domain, and Gulele is a district of Addis Ababa. It's reasonable to infer TAF ZONE is a new developer account run by the same people as Gulele Tech, or a contractor they use (inference, not verified).

- The need being substituted is "after the Gulf blocked VoIP, how do you call home for free": imo, WhatsApp calls, assorted free VPNs (Urban VPN and others), and tunnel apps like AM Tunnel Lite. The Tips clone itself offers no VPN; it just wraps the "guide" in an ad-filled shell.

### 3. Growth tactic: Facebook Reels creator referrals + link rotation

The evidence, in short:

- **Hawisha / Dijtaltech page** : one Reel posted 2026-05-02 got 127k views and 2,600 interactions, and its caption is the Ola Pro Play link; the search summary says the video teaches "free internet in Saudi and UAE via Amharic, a No SIM VPN App guide". Ola Pro was only listed in Sep 24, which means this older hit's link was later pointed at a newer app, i.e. **link rotation** : old video traffic is continually redirected to the latest clone (https://www.facebook.com/Dijtaltech/videos/2458051924623359/). This creator also posted an ola_pro link in a Jeddah post in Mar 19 (the post was probably edited later).

- The same script, "Connect globally with FREE 🆓📞🇸🇦 Make international calls…", is being batch-posted by many pages: Shemsiya jemal promoted com.tafzone.lego_pro, one post at 142k views, and the same page has others at 369k, 244k and 109k views; Selamawit ዮሐንስ has one at 162k; Boni has one at 44k; Melo Konjo is posting too; another page promotes com.tafzone.sudi_pro. Comments include people saying "አይሰራም" (Amharic for "doesn't work") and others asking whether accounts get banned.

- Other players use the same playbook: Grace Tips (Ardi Soft)'s video says "download Grace Tips, search BFS in the app, then…"; Info Tips teaches "free data" in Oromo. It's confirmed that the whole ecosystem runs on this path: Reel tutorial → download the Tips app → search a keyword inside the app to find the guide.

- No sign of ads in the Meta, TikTok or Google ad libraries (those libraries only track listed products, so not finding them doesn't mean they aren't running). Searching tafzone on TikTok returns 0 results. No media coverage, and no discussion on X.

- How the money comes back: AdMob, AppLovin, Unity and StartApp are stacked inside the app, monetized through interstitial ads. Users have to click through several pages to find the "guide", and every step can pop an ad. Creators are likely paid per install or per ad revenue share (inference, not verified).

### 4. Why it took off

1. **A real, urgent need with no compliant supply** : Gulf states block VoIP, and millions of Ethiopian domestic and migrant workers want to call home for free and save on data. "Free internet / free calls" is a strong hook for them.

2. **Distribution runs on a network of native-language creators** : Amharic and Oromo Facebook Reels pages get anywhere from a hundred thousand to several hundred thousand views per video, and the link can be swapped to a new app at any time.

3. **A clone portfolio built to beat takedowns and review** : the listings are written as compliant "tech / shopping tutorial" apps, each lasts a few months, and TAF ZONE has put out 13+ in half a year (search results also show off-database clones like Tiger, Lego, Sudi, Sonan, Major and Vita Star). When one loses traffic, traffic moves to the next.

4. **The small charts are easy to crack** : Saudi and UAE Education free charts, a few hundred installs a day gets you into the top 100, and once charted you pick up some organic store traffic (inference).

### 5. Differentiation

**No product-level differentiation** . Ola Pro and the apps from Kana Press, Ardi Soft and Gulele share the same template, copy and monetization, and TAF ZONE itself is a late follower (Gulele started in 2024-08, Kana Press in 2025-02). It works because of its **distribution network and clone rotation** , not the product. If there's any difference, it's that it plugs into the Gulele creator network, so each new clone has ready-made Reels traffic behind it.

### 6. Visibility

**Still little known** (in mainstream circles): no TrustMRR listing, no media coverage, no X discussion, and 0 TikTok results. But inside Ethiopian Facebook communities it is **already a crowded business** : a dozen-plus developers and over a hundred clones, holding thirty to forty slots on the Saudi Education chart every day.

### 7. What to borrow

- The combination of "diaspora population + blocked, urgent need + native-language short-video creators": find a group abroad that speaks a minor language, has a strong need, and whose local store options are non-compliant or poor (for example South and Southeast Asian laborers in the Gulf, or specific groups in Russia or Iran), then drive installs with native-language Reels.

- Re-point old viral videos to new apps: separate the traffic asset (the video) from the monetization asset (the app), so a takedown doesn't cut off the flow.

- The bar for small countries and small category charts is very low, so they can be used to amplify organic installs.

- Risks: this approach leans heavily on misleading promises ("free internet"). If Google judges it deceptive or flags duplicate clones, whole accounts get banned, and there's legal risk in Saudi Arabia around VPN and VoIP circumvention. Don't copy the promises; the distribution structure is what's worth borrowing.

### 8. Still unclear

- What's actually inside the app (just an article, or VPN configs or tunnel parameters?): not verified, APK not downloaded.

- How creators and developers split the money (same team paid per install, or ad revenue share): not verified.

- The actual relationship between TAF ZONE and Gulele Tech: only one piece of evidence, the subdomain.

- Ad revenue: estimated from Gulf ad rates and several hundred thousand installs, roughly a few thousand dollars a month per account (pure inference).
