Code E02: how a "tech tips" app became the first step for Ethiopian workers in the Gulf making free calls

What it is An Android shell app under the name "tech tips / reviews", with guides filed under codes, leading Ethiopian workers in the Gulf to the next app that claims free calls and free internet, with ads in between as the revenue source.

Why it took off The Gulf restricts internet calling, Ethiopian workers want to call home for free, and a batch of Amharic and Oromo Facebook pages made tutorials that put Tina Plus as step one, bringing roughly 5,000 installs in the one or two days around Oct 20.

DHow you could follow it Don't copy the clone or the "free" promise. Take the structure: find a group abroad that speaks a minor language and has a blocked need, build a compliant tool that actually delivers, make tutorial videos on that group's own native-language pages, and use codes to separate traffic sources.

Grade D: it got going on an Ethiopian native-language page network a follower can't access and on promises that likely won't be delivered. A dozen-plus developers and over a hundred same-template clones are already crowding the same audience, each single app lives only a few videos, and whole accounts carry takedown risk. Only the distribution structure is worth knowing. Still little known

On Google Play, Tina Plus calls itself "efficiency learning resources for the digital age", with 8,627 installs as of Nov 6 and no ratings at all. The people installing it aren't there to learn efficiency; they're Ethiopians working in Saudi Arabia and the UAE who heard in native-language short videos: install Tina Plus, search "E02" inside it, and you get free internet and free calls home. This piece lays out how that chain works, why it produced thousands of installs, where the money comes from, and what you can take from it.

A Reel with 41k views

On the evening of Oct 23, a Facebook page called Senayit posted a Reel. The caption is an English template everyone in this circle uses: "Connect globally with FREE 🆓📞🇸🇦 Make international calls, share moments, and more", followed by #saudiarabia #uae #techtips. By Nov 6 it had 41k views and 504 reactions. The video is a step-by-step tutorial: download Tina Plus from the Play Store, search for the code "E02" inside the app, then follow its instructions to install the next app (Facebook video page and its summary, read 11-06).

That's not the only tutorial using this script. A video from the Zuzuye Info page with 2,300 views also says "install Tina Plus → search E02", pointing to EthioCall as the next step; a video from the Beza page with 3,600 views has the next step as a tool called "T-20 VPN". Most of the page names are Ethiopian women's names, and "ለቅመሞች" is appended to Zuzuye Info's name, an in-group term in Amharic used by Ethiopian women working as domestic workers in Arab countries.

What it is

In the store, Tina Plus is listed as an entertainment app under TAF ZONE: a generic "practical tips and in-depth reviews to help you use technology smarter", 4 screenshots, with ads, no in-app purchases, and a data safety section saying location "may be shared with third parties" (Google Play store page, 11-06). The description is word-for-word identical to the same developer's ZenPro and Masa Pro.

To the user, it's a box of entries keyed by a passcode. The video tells you which code to search, and the entry for that code tells you which app to install or which link to open. The content sits on the backend and can be swapped anytime: the same Tina Plus could point E02 at EthioCall today and at something else tomorrow with a different code. Which app is downstream, whether Tina Plus and the downstream app are the same operator, and whether installs are revenue-shared are all unverified, since no install was checked.

Does it actually let people call for free? Most likely not. The most common comment under similar videos is "አይሰራም", meaning "doesn't work". But the install is already counted before the user figures that out.

Why people install it

The need is real. Saudi Arabia and the UAE have long restricted WhatsApp, imo and similar internet calling apps, and there are large Ethiopian populations of domestic workers and labourers there who need to call home. Their options are paying international call rates or finding a VPN. The legitimate routes (paid international calling like Rebtel, Boss Revolution or EthioCall, and proper VPNs) all cost money. "Free" is the strongest hook for this group.

The shell app solves a different problem: how to get this traffic into Google Play legitimately. An app openly advertising "free international calls by bypassing carriers" won't pass review. A "tech tips" app that uses a passcode to send users on to the next step will. The video and the app are bound together by one code. If the app gets pulled, swap the shell and the code, and the videos keep going out.

Sources: the 10-20 to 10-22 figures are third-party estimates; from 10-29 onward are Google Play install counts.

The shape is typical: about 5,000 installs in the first day or two, then dozens to hundreds a day, with bumps every few days when another video picks it up. This looks like an app that got written into the first step of a few videos, not one that is growing on its own merits (inference). On the charts it has appeared in one place: the UAE Entertainment Top Free chart, between #29 and #6 from Oct 120 to Nov 198 (Google Play charts). The bar for the small Gulf category charts is low; a few hundred installs a day is enough to get listed. We found no Meta ads running for these package names in the ad library, no mentions on X, and no press coverage.

One detail doesn't line up: the store lists the launch date as Oct 6, but the version number is already 3.0.0. Meanwhile the Beza video that names Tina Plus was posted Aug 18, and the Zuzuye Info video was posted Sep 1. Either the package existed earlier and got re-listed or re-described in October, or the video descriptions were later edited to name the new app. Either way it points to the same thing: in this business the app is the part that gets swapped out easily (inference).

Who is behind it

TAF ZONE publishes 13 apps with nearly identical templates, starting in April 2026, totalling roughly 520K installs: NorPro 204K, Numan Pro 95K, Tolan Pro 57K, ZenPro 56K… Tina Plus 8,627, fifth from the bottom (Google Play, 11-06). Tina Plus and Zulu Tech were published on the same day. NorPro's curve runs at 6,000 to 15,000 a day for several days in mid-August, then a spike of a few thousand every so often. Each viral video is one step up.

TAF ZONE's website sits at tafzone.guleletech.com, a subdomain of Gulele Tech. The page shows only the default WordPress page and each app's privacy policy. Gulele is a district of Addis Ababa, and Gulele Tech has been making apps like Lomi Tips (550K) and Orbit Tips (510K) since August 2024. TAF ZONE is very likely another developer account run by the same group (inference; the only evidence is the subdomain).

Who it's competing with

There's no "brand" competitor, only a whole field of clones on the same template, with names like "X Pro / X Tips / X Tech / X Plus" (Google Play installs, 11-06):

Others include Abrelo Soft, Etclicks, ETHIOSOFT, Toftex and Hagere Techs, each in the hundreds of thousands. Tina Plus is a late entrant's small account, with no product difference from its peers. The only variable is which video happened to name it.

Where the money comes from

Ads only. To find the passcode guide, users go through several layers, and each layer can show an ad. The users are in the Gulf, where ad rates are higher than in Ethiopia. Development cost is close to zero: change the name and the icon and you have a new app. Whether the downstream app pays a promotion fee isn't visible from outside (unverified). Counting 8,627 installs, Tina Plus itself earns a fraction; the economics of this business have to be judged across the whole account network and its millions of installs.

If it were you

Verdict: Don't read this as a business to copy. Read it as a sample of a distribution structure. It runs on a network of Ethiopian-language homepages that followers can't replicate, plus a "free" promise that most likely won't be delivered. A dozen-plus developers and hundreds of clone apps are already competing for the same audience, and Tina Plus is itself a follower.

Who it suits: People already inside a diaspora community who have ties to native-language short-video pages, and teams building tools for overseas workers, migrants or students who want a real, genuine need to target.

Who it doesn't suit: Anyone outside this circle. You can build an identical shell, but you won't have a set of pages to push tutorials for you. Anyone aiming for a durable product and reputation: here an app lives for a few months, and the comments say "doesn't work". Anyone who can't stomach account bans: Google takes down whole accounts over clone templates and misleading descriptions, and getting around internet calling restrictions in Saudi Arabia carries its own legal risk.

How to do it: Keep the structure, replace the promise. Find a group that is abroad, speaks a minority language, and has a real need that is blocked or ignored, such as Nepali, Filipino or Indonesian workers in the Gulf. Build something that actually delivers and complies: compare legal low-cost international call rates, remittance rates, contract and visa guides. The passcode trick can stay, used to count and settle traffic from different pages and different videos separately.

How to get users: The community's own native-language Facebook Reels and TikTok pages, where a tutorial with tens of thousands of views is normal. Put the link somewhere you can edit it (bio, pinned comment) so older videos keep sending traffic. After launch, get into a small Gulf category chart; a few hundred installs can put you in the top 200 and bring in some organic store traffic.

When it's too late: There's no window left for a clone like Tina Plus. Its lifespan is a few videos. The "change the audience, build something real" path has no obvious deadline, and those who first establish themselves in a community's pages win the advantage.

Signs this read is wrong: ① After these clones are removed in bulk, similar apps quickly reappear on the Saudi and UAE category charts, which would show this business is more resilient than it looks. ② Someone builds a genuinely working, compliant tool that reaches several hundred thousand installs through the same native-language pages, which would show the real value is "real need plus native-language distribution", not the word "free", and that you should move sooner. ③ Installs for this kind of app shrink across the board and fewer of them chart, which would show users have learned from the "doesn't work" comments and the distribution structure itself is failing.

Tina Plus (com.tafzone.tina_plus): a shell app on Google Play serving as a relay page for short videos on "free internet / free calls for Ethiopian workers in the Gulf"

One line

Tina Plus has no real content of its own. It is one member of a set of template apps from TAF ZONE (13 in total, all with the same English "tech tips / app review" description). The real traffic comes from a batch of Amharic / Oromo accounts on Facebook Reels and TikTok. Their videos share the title "Connect globally with FREE … Make international calls", aimed at Ethiopian labourers in Saudi Arabia and the UAE, most of them domestic workers. The videos tell viewers to first install Tina Plus from Play, search for a passcode (for example "E02"), and then follow the instructions to install a tool such as "T-20 VPN", which is claimed to offer free internet and free calls home. Tina Plus makes money as a relay page that passes Play review, with ad slots, and the money comes from the ads in the steps that follow. It gets traffic because of this chain of "short video → store shell app → passcode → next app". The distribution, not the product, is what drives it.

1. The data: how big it is and how it grew

  • Cumulative global installs 8,627 (2026-11-06, googleplay.app_snap), Play tier 5K+. No ratings, no reviews, no in-app purchases, marked as containing ads (ad_supported=True).
  • Store launch date 2026-10-06, version 3.0.0,10-21 has been updated since. The version number has already reached 3.0.0, which suggests the package may be an old one re-skinned or with its information changed (Play resets the launch date when info is changed). This is unverified.
  • Install curve (AppstoreSpy estimate, app_day_ext): 10-20 already had 3,989 installs when it was first spotted. About 3,981,10-21 new installs that day, 1,155,10-22 new installs the next, 525 after that, then it dropped to 150–300,11-04 a day, and from 11-05 on it sat around 50 a day until 11-06, when it climbed back to 201. This is a burst of pulses, not organic growth. It matches the pattern of "one short video brought a wave."
  • 7 days, 960 new installs per day (10-30 to 11-06). On charts, it only ever made the UAE Entertainment Top Free chart, ranking 160 → 190 → 198 → 120 (10-29 to 11-06, chart_rank). The UAE Entertainment category is an easy bar to clear: a few hundred daily installs gets you on it.
  • The same developer has 13 apps in the googleplay library, about 520k installs combined: NorPro 204,477, Numan Pro 94,709, Tolan Pro 57,234 (7 days, +10,735), ZenPro 55,967, Gojo Tips 39,559, Adil Pro 16,466, Masa Pro 11,370, Nora Pro 11,047, Tina Plus 8,627, Meba Pro 7,958, Zulu Tech 6,458, Afri Pro 5,730, Ola Pro 4,936. Charting only happened in the sa / ae stores (the best result was #16 on the UAE Education Top Free chart). NorPro's curve shows several days of 6,000 to 15,000 daily installs in mid-August (peak 15,467 at 8-19), then keeps getting single-day spikes of several thousand, such as 7,526 on 10-04 and 11,065 on 10-08. This is the classic "each viral video pushes another wave."
  • TAF ZONE's developer site is tafzone.guleletech.com, which means it's a subdomain of Gulele Tech. Gulele is a district in Addis Ababa. The site runs a default WordPress page, and it also hosts the privacy policy pages for various apps (majorpro.html, Sonanpro.html, seen in Jina search results). Gulele Tech itself has Lomi Tips 551,765, Orbit Tips 506,676, Lina Pro 225,372, Raha Tech 224,536, and Arki Tech 200,101 in the library. So TAF ZONE is most likely a secondary or partner account for the same group, used as a front to spread volume. The recall card says the developer is a Moroccan individual named AIMANE BADAOUI. I could not verify that.

2. What it actually does (evidence of the growth tactic)

  • Store page (r.jina.ai reading the Play page, 2026-11-06): the description is one generic paragraph, "educational resource … practical tips and in-depth reviews," with 4 screenshots. The data safety section says location "may be shared with third parties." Nothing on the store page shows what it's really for.
  • Google summary of Facebook Reels (Jina search):
    • Hayuti ቅመሟ account 2026-11-02 Reel, titled "Connect globally with FREE 🆓📞🇸🇦 Make international calls…", summary: "He explains the process of downloading the 'Tina Plus' app from the Google Play Store and then using it to find and install the 'T-20 VPN' app". 918 plays.
    • A post from the Zuzuye Info ለቅመሞች account, "Connect globally with FREE INTERNET…", summary: "downloading the 'Tina Plus' app, searching for a specific code 'E02' within it, and then downloading…" Aimed at Saudi Arabia.
    • A video from the Meskii account, titled "Free 5G Internet in Saudi Arabia with Mobily Using ZenPro VPN." The summary also mentions Tina Plus. 46K views, 624 reactions, 35 comments.
    • The same title template is used by many accounts to promote the group's other apps: Boni promotes ARKI TECH (Gulele Tech's Arki Tech), 44K views, 934 reactions; the Selamawit ዮሐንስ account has one with 2026-10-26 at 2.6K views; other videos push Info Tips (Ardi Soft), Sky Pro, Sonan Pro, and Tolan Pro. There is also an Oromo-language post, "Linki appicha xuqudhan bufadha" (the link to download the app), that directly posts the Play link for com.tafzone.lego_pro.
    • Comments include Amharic reading "አይሰራም" (doesn't work), showing that plenty of people installed it and found the promise didn't hold up. The installs still count.
  • TikTok (TikHub search for "free internet saudi habesha"): @tech.with.bizu (Oromo, 10-17,20K views), @digitalx0 (10-29,33K), @beza74219 (Tigrinya, saying free internet in KSA / UAE, 15K), @nex.tech9 (tagged #kana plus), @sumtii02 (tagged #የማዳም_ቅመሞች, a term Ethiopian domestic workers use for themselves in Arab countries). There is a large volume of similar content. Searching "Tina Plus" directly only returns an Entina 3D printer, which suggests Tina Plus's traffic comes mainly from Facebook.
  • Meta Ad Library (metaads.app_link): none of the package names for TAF ZONE, Gulele Tech, Kana Press, or Ardi Soft have matching ads. They aren't on our tracking list, so not finding ads doesn't mean none were run. Based on the evidence, though, the traffic is mostly organic plus an account network.
  • X (x-radar, last 30 days): searches for "tafzone", "Tina Plus", and "Kana Press" each return 0 posts.

How the funnel works: a batch of FB / TikTok sock-puppet accounts (mostly Ethiopian female names, with content reusing the same template) post tutorial videos on "free internet / free international calls" → viewers are sent to Play to install a "Tips / Pro / Tech" shell app → inside the app is a list of entries that can be opened with a secret code (the content lives on the backend and can be swapped anytime) → entries point to a second app, such as a VPN, or to an external link → ads are inserted at every step. The benefits are threefold:

  1. The shell app is packaged as "education / reviews" on Play, which lowers review risk and avoids sensitive terms like "free VPN" or "bypass carrier billing."
  2. The secret code ties the video to the app: one app, and a different code in each video sends people to a different downstream destination.
  3. If a shell app gets pulled, it doesn't matter. You just publish another from the same template. TAF ZONE has shipped 13 in half a year, and Tina Plus and Zulu Tech were both published on the same day (10-06).

Where the money comes from: no in-app purchases, only ads (the Play page is labeled Contains ads). The users are in the Middle East, where ad rates are higher than in Ethiopia. There is probably also a promotion share from the downstream apps, but I have not verified this.

3. Competitors: many people run this same business, and this one is a sock puppet

Legitimate alternatives include imo, WhatsApp calls (often restricted in Saudi Arabia and the UAE, which is exactly where the demand comes from), paid international calling like Talk360 / Rebtel / Boss Revolution / ethioCall, and real VPNs. These cost money or are restricted locally. The shell apps sell the claim of "free," not actual capability.

Compared with peers, Tina Plus has no product differentiation. Its description matches ZenPro and Masa Pro word for word. It is just a new account from this group. The traffic it got came from a few videos that named it as the "first app to install."

4. Visibility

Almost nobody outside knows about it: no press coverage, no discussion on X, and no one has disclosed revenue. Only automatically indexing sites like appbrain, apkpure, softonic, and cnet have pages for it. roborhythms and a Medium article mention in passing that TAF ZONE's "Tolan Pro" ranks high when searching "Tolan" on Play, riding on the name of Portola's AI companion app Tolan. But inside Ethiopian diaspora Facebook and TikTok circles, this playbook is open knowledge, and the space is crowded (the dozen or so developers above have anywhere from hundreds of thousands to millions of installs).

5. Verdict

  • Why it took off: Ethiopian laborers in the Middle East have strong demand for "free internet / free calls home" (plans are expensive and calling apps are restricted), and a batch of small-language short-video accounts used "free" as the hook. Tina Plus was picked as the "first step" in a few videos. About 5,000 installs came in over the 10-20 or so before and after, then faded fast.
  • Differentiation: none. It's the same template as dozens of other apps from the same developer and ecosystem. The only differences are which video pushed it and where the secret code points.
  • What's worth borrowing: using a store shell app plus a secret code to channel short-video traffic into Play; the acquisition path of a small language plus a discrete audience (Gulf laborers); spreading takedown risk across a template portfolio. But the core promise, "free internet / calls," may not hold up. Commenters already say it doesn't work. It also sits in a gray zone against Play policy (misleading claims, bypassing carrier billing), so the lifespan is short and it is hard to sustain. The playbook could be copied with a different ethnicity or language (Gulf laborers from Indonesia, the Philippines, Nepal), but doing so carries compliance risk.

Unconfirmed

  • What the secret codes in the app map to, who owns the downstream apps, and whether there is a CPI share: none of this has been verified against actual installs.
  • Whether TAF ZONE and Gulele Tech are the same entity: the only evidence is the subdomain. The recall card says the developer is Moroccan; unverified.
  • Whether Meta ads were bought: our ad library doesn't track these Pages, so we can't tell.
  • Whether version 3.0.0 with 10-06 as the launch build is a reskin of an older package: unverified.
