"Did gemtoon get hacked?": a pirated webtoon reader renamed itself, and in two weeks went from 2 thousand to 48k installs
What it is A free pirated webtoon (manhwa) reader listed on Google Play disguised as a manga creation / photo editing tool, earning money from ads.
Why it took off 10-22 renamed itself to include AceToon, a pirate brand that had already been taken down but still has many people searching for it. It caught the overflow of "free webtoon reading" search traffic after pirate sites like Bato were shut down, and then kept growing through a low-barrier free manga category chart.
DHow you could follow along Don't copy pirate clones; what you can borrow is "catch the store keywords right when a similar app gets pulled or a platform shuts down," and build a legit version, like a licensed alternative or migration tool after Tapas shut down in March 2027.

MyComics describes itself on Google Play as a "manga creation tool," but users who install it are actually reading webtoons for free. It had almost no users for three months after launch. In Oct 22 it added a taken-down pirate brand name, "AceToon," to its title. Over the next two weeks installs grew more than twentyfold and it entered the manga free charts in 19 countries. This piece explains how it took off, where the money comes from, why I don't recommend copying it, and which move in it works even for legitimate products.
A one-star review
In 2026 Oct 19, a user named Vivian Chenh left a review of this app on Google Play:
ok is gemtoon hacked or something? I'm not using this app to run AI through some comic. It was fun while it lasted.
When she installed it, the app was called GemToon, and the store listing read "Read webtoons and track your reading list". Just a webtoon reader. When she opened it that day, though, it looked like an app that "processes comics with AI". Three days later the Oct 22,1.1.5 version went live under the name "MyComics: AceToon & Manga", with the listing changed to "MyComics Photo Studio – Simple Photo Editor", pitching filters, cropping, and rotation. Oct 28 it changed again: the name shrank to just "MyComics", the listing became "Discover a world of exciting comics with Comic Lab!…explore comic-inspired creative features", and the one-line pitch was "Create manga-style comic art".
The store page kept changing its skin, but what the users who stayed wanted didn't change. On Oct 8, a user named shrimp wrote:
It's nice, and it allows me to catch up on the green-flag comics I've stopped reading after bato was banned. However…some, most, or all of the pages are blurred in a chapter or more.
Bato was the pirated manga site taken down in January this year. This one review pretty much sums up what the app is: a free pirated webtoon reader disguised as a creation tool and still listed on Google Play. The developer is listed as "Fic---Anja" with a Gmail address, and the entity registered on third-party data sites is in Morocco.
The curve is a single step
| Timeline | Total installs | What happened |
|---|---|---|
| 7-12 | 0 | Launched as GemToon |
| 8-13 | About 2,000 | single-digit daily new installs (third-party estimate) |
| 10-22 | About 2,270 | Renamed "MyComics: AceToon & Manga" |
| 10-27 | About 12,900 | about 10k more over 5 days |
| 10-31 | 25,519 | |
| 11-03 | 36,244 | |
| 11-06 | 48,282 | 7 days +35,307 |
(Google Play installs, recorded daily from 10-29 onward; earlier figures are third-party estimates.)
Ratings went from 92 on 10-29 to 269 by 11-06, averaging 3.6. On the charts, in the Comics category free chart it climbed from #15 to #4 in the UK and from #27 to #17 in the US, and reached #4 in the Philippines and #3 in Malaysia. 11-06 it appeared on the Comics free chart in 19 countries, ranking #6 and #7 in places like Brazil, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Nigeria, Singapore, Vietnam, the Netherlands, and South Africa (Google Play charts, 11-06).
The Comics free chart has a low bar: a few thousand installs a day can get you into the top ten in many countries. Making the chart brings exposure, and installs keep rising from there. But the first push came from the rename.
Why the word "AceToon" was worth money
AceToon: Comics & Manga was a webtoon reader listed on Google Play in April this year. It reached 710K installs and 1,842 ratings in two months, then was pulled in June (AppBrain). Its iOS version is still listed, with 7.5K ratings.
On TikTok, AceToon and QToon are two names for the same thing in the mouths of the same people: the BL (boys' love) webtoon readers, many of them young Spanish speakers. A video tagged #qtoon #acetoon from May 15 says "ya lo acomodaron pero no es el mismo 🙁" (they fixed it, but it's not the same anymore), with 290k views. A day earlier, another one says "I was really happy when I found it, but it still can't replace QToon", with 166k views (TikTok, 11-06 views). Going back further, two videos mourning Bato from Jan 20 and Feb 7 each got over 200K views.
After the original was pulled, people still searched "acetoon". A reply on r/mangapiracy said AceToon "has been down for weeks now, anything using the name is a scam or a knockoff". Google Play has a whole string of these knockoffs:
| Name | Installs (11-06) | past 7 days |
|---|---|---|
| MangaMuse:AceToon Lite & Comic | 788k | +174k |
| MangaNest:QToon Lite & Comic | 327k | +139k |
| Acetoon: Comics & Manga (different developer) | 63k | |
| MyComics (formerly MyComics: AceToon & Manga) | 48k | +35k |
Two other apps using the AceToon name have also been removed. MyComics came late to the name grab, four months after MangaMuse, and is more than ten times smaller.
Why users keep showing up
On the demand side, the spillover kept going all year. In January Bato.to and about 60 linked sites were shut down; in April TuMangaOnline, the biggest Spanish-language site, closed; in October the KaliScan and MGJinx domains were frozen; from Oct 17 Comix began blocking third-party reader apps. On the licensed side, Kakao announced on Sep 22 that Tapas would shut down on Mar 31 of 2027. Each site that goes down sends a batch of people to the store to search "free manhwa" or the name of the dead site.
Installing one app on Play beats fiddling with APKs or adding sources to an open-source reader. That convenience is the entire pitch of these knockoff apps. The experience isn't good: reviews repeatedly mention "really blurry images" and chapters failing to load. People stay for the free content, not the product.
Where the money comes from
No in-app purchases, just ads. The app includes AdMob and Meta Audience Network, plus AppsFlyer attribution (third-party SDK scan, 10-21). AppGoblin estimates monthly revenue below $10K. The AppsFlyer SDK suggests it may have bought traffic, but I couldn't find its ads in the Meta Ad Library or on TikTok. Unverified.
Who it's competing with
Two groups. One is the legit platforms: WEBTOON (194M installs on Play), WebComics (16.8M, running heavy paid acquisition on TikTok with "search codes"), Manta, MangaToon, and MANGA Plus, which sell official titles and paid chapters. The other is the knockoffs: since 4 through September, dozens of clones have appeared in the Comics category, many borrowing names from pirate sites or open-source readers (Mihon, Tachiyomi, Mangadex, MangaFire, Comix, ToonGod...). The big ones include Permen Comic (1.68M), Qivora (1.38M), StoryToon (580K), and Toonhub: Premium Comics (37K installs). 11-06 ranks #3 on the UK Top Free comics chart (Google Play, 11-06).
Product-wise, MyComics is no different from these knockoffs: same template, webtoon reading plus ads, wrapped in a "creation tool" shell. It took off for two reasons only: timing, and picking the right word to ride.
If it were you
In one line: D. This is a business of repackaging pirated content, riding other brands' names, and sneaking past review by disguising itself. It can earn a little ad money, but dozens of people are doing the same thing, and getting removed is just a matter of time. Understanding how it gained traction is enough; I don't recommend copying it.
Who it's for: people who want to learn how store search traffic moves in the days after a brand gets pulled. That also holds for legitimate products.
Who it's not for: anyone building a long-term product. It violates Google Play's intellectual property and metadata policies. The original AceToon and several knockoffs each lasted only a month or two. The content itself is infringing, so this isn't a gray area but real legal risk. And if the developer account gets banned, all installs go to zero.
How to do it (compliant version): there's only one move worth borrowing. Watch for the moment a similar product gets pulled or a platform announces a shutdown, and be ready to catch those users right away. For example, Tapas shuts down on Mar 31 of 2027, and users who bought chapters won't get refunds, so they'll be looking for a new place to read. Build an aggregator of licensed webtoons, a shelf-migration tool, or a "where to read after Tapas shuts down" guide page, with store titles and web copy using the words users actually search for (without impersonating anyone's trademark).
How to get users: store search and category charts. The Comics category can put an app in the top ten with a few thousand installs in many countries, and the search spike from a shutdown is enough to push a new app onto the chart. On TikTok, people who read webtoons film their own "where else can I read this" videos, so posting under those tags is cheaper than paid acquisition.
When to move earlier: follow the event. The next clear milestone is around the Tapas shutdown, in Q1 of 2027.
What would prove this read wrong: ① MyComics kept gaining installs after dropping "AceToon", still adding tens of thousands a week at the end of November, which would mean the main driver was charts or paid acquisition, not the name; ② MangaMuse-style knockoffs go three months without being removed, which would mean Google enforces less strictly than expected and the window for this kind of business is longer than I thought (the risk remains); ③ the licensed platforms absorb Tapas users themselves (for example, Kakao routes users to other apps), which closes the gap that made room for this.
--- Data and sources: Google Play store pages, reviews, installs, and charts (10-29 to 11-06; installs before 10-22 are third-party estimates); historical store-page snapshots from AppBrain, AppGlint, and apkcombo (the GemToon period and the two renames, 10-22 and 10-28); AppGoblin's SDK scan and revenue estimates (estimates, unverified); TikTok videos tagged #acetoon #qtoon (11-06 view counts); r/mangapiracy (only search snippets were read); reporting on the Bato.to, TuMangaOnline, Comix, and Tapas shutdowns (comicbook.com, CBR, OtakuDown, GameRant). Where I write "estimated" or "unverified", the figure is an estimate or I couldn't confirm it.

Why MyComics (com.tbtoon.gemcomic) took off
Channel: Google Play, Comics category. Developer "Fic---Anja" (email [email protected]; Acknosoft lists the registered entity as EL HADDAOH ZAKARIA, AppGoblin lists Morocco). Launched 2026-07-12. Research date 2026-11-06.
Bottom line
It isn't a legitimate comics platform. It's a disguised pirated manga/webtoon (manhwa) reader on Google Play: the store page calls it a "comic creation / photo editing tool" to get through review, and once users open it they're reading repackaged webtoons. Its growth almost certainly came from the Oct 22 rename to "MyComics: AceToon & Manga", borrowing the pirate brand AceToon, which had already been pulled and still had high search volume, which tapped into store search traffic. After that it got into the top ten through the Comics free chart (the bar is low in many countries), forming a loop of charting → exposure → more installs. Meanwhile pirate sites kept getting shut down through the whole 2026 year (Bato.to, TuMangaOnline, KaliScan, and Comix also started blocking reader apps), and licensed platforms like Tapas and Kakao Webtoon announced shutdowns, so demand for "where can I read manhwa for free" kept spilling over. It monetizes through AdMob and Meta ads.
1. Data: the curve is a step, not organic growth
- In the three months after its July launch, it barely had any users: from 8-13 at about 2,033 to 10-22 at about 2,270 installs, with only single digits of new installs per day (googleplay library
app_day_ext, AppstoreSpy estimates). - 10-22 to 10-27 installs jumped by about 10.6k (2,270 → 12,916), then kept climbing: 10-30 25,519,11-03 36,244,11-05 44,551,11-06 48,282 (googleplay library
app_snap). +35,307 new installs over 7 days. - Rating 92 → 269 (10-29 to 11-06). Average around 3.6; no in-app purchases, ads only (
offers_iap=False,ad_supported=True). - Charts: Comics Top Free in the UK 15 → 4 (10-29 → 11-06), US 27 → 17, Philippines 7 → 4, #3 in Malaysia; charted in 19 countries' Comics Top Free (googleplay library
chart_rank).
2. The inflection point and the rename line up
| Timeline | Store page | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 7–August | Name GemToon, description "Read webtoons and track your reading list", openly a webtoon reader; version 1.1.3 | apkcombo, AppBrain (data updated at 10-10:2.3k installs; best rank was #14 in Mexico's Comics Top Free) |
| 10-19 | User review: "ok is gemtoon hacked or something? I'm not using this app to run AI through some comic". By then the app shell had been rebranded as an "AI / creation tool". | Google Play reviews |
| 10-22(v1.1.5) | Renamed "MyComics: AceToon & Manga", description changed to "MyComics Photo Studio – Simple Photo Editor" (filters, crop, rotate) | AppGlint, AppBrain (data updated at 10-24:4.7k installs; best rank was #5 in Brazil's Comics Top Free) |
| 10-28(v1.1.6) | Renamed "MyComics", description now "Discover … comics with Comic Lab! … comic-inspired creative features", one-liner "Create manga-style comic art"; website gemcomicown.com reads "MyComics Studio — Make your own comic" | Play Store listing, gemcomicown.com |
Installs spiked sharply starting 10-22, right when "AceToon" was written into the title.
3. Why the word "AceToon" is worth money
- The original AceToon: Comics & Manga (com.acetoon.app, developer OneSnap Service) launched in April 2026, and within just 2 months had 710k installs and 1,842 ratings. It was pulled from Google Play in June 2026 (AppBrain, AppGoblin). Its description directly compared itself with QToon, WebComics, Tapas, Lezhin and Manta.
- The iOS AceToon (id6760827767, Weaver's Store, Inc.) is still live with 7.5K ratings on the App Store, so users still recognize the brand.
- On Reddit r/mangapiracy someone said AceToon "has been down for weeks, and the apps and sites using the name now are scams or knockoffs" (r/mangapiracy/comments/1tr9xdh; title and snippet from search results, the body was blocked by Reddit and I did not read it).
- A whole pile of Play apps are riding the AceToon name: Acetoon: Manga & Web Comics (ABUNDANCIA LTD, removed), AceToon: Manga & Comics (GoldenDev Studio, removed), Acetoon: Comics & Manga (com.acetoon.www, 63k installs), MangaMuse: AceToon Lite & Comic (788k installs, +174k in 7 days). The pirated QToon brand is being piggybacked the same way: MangaNest: QToon Lite & Comic (327k, +139k in 7 days) (googleplay library, 11-06).
- Takeaway: once the original is pulled, people searching "acetoon" get routed by the store to apps with that word in the title. MyComics is one of the late entrants in this fight over the name.
4. Why users show up now and why they stay
- Supply is collapsing: in January 2026 Bato.to and roughly 60 linked sites were taken down (comicbook.com, animemojo, sourced via CODA); in April TuMangaOnline shut down (CBR); in October the KaliScan and MGJinx domains were frozen; since 10-17 Comix has blocked third-party reader apps (OtakuDown). On the legit side, Kakao 9-22 announced Tapas would shut down 2027-03-31 and Kakao Webtoon pulled back to Korea (GameRant, GameTrader.SG, TDGN).
- Users say it themselves: "It … allows me to catch up on the green-flag comics I've stopped reading after bato was banned" (Play review, 10-08). Users want free pirated webtoons they can install from Play without fiddling with APKs and plugins.
- Its weaknesses: reviews say pages are blurry and chapters fail to load ("really blurry images" and similar); average rating 3.6. Users stay for free content, not for the experience.
5. Competitors
Products doing the same thing fall into two groups:
- Official platforms: WEBTOON (194M installs), Manta (9M), WebComics (16.8M, heavy TikTok paid acquisition using search codes), MangaToon, Tapas (shutting down), MANGA Plus. They sell licensed content and paid chapters; MyComics is free, of unclear provenance, and monetized with ads.
- Pirated / knockoff readers (direct rivals on Play): Since 2026-4, dozens of copycat apps have flooded the comics category on Play, most borrowing names from pirate sites or open-source readers (Mihon, Tachiyomi, Kotatsu, Mangadex, MangaFire, MangaKakalot, Comix, ComicK, Lectormanga, ToonGod, Kagane, Atsumaru, etc.). The ones with the biggest volume: Permen Comic (1.68M), Qivora (1.38M), MangaMuse (790K), StoryToon (580K), MangaNest (330K), Toonhub: Premium Comics (37K, ranked #3 on the UK Google Play free comics chart, 11-06) (Google Play library).
- Open source: Mihon, Aidoku and Tachimanga are readers where you add your own sources, which is a high bar to use; MyComics-style apps work out of the box.
The difference between MyComics and these is basically one thing: timing + picking the right keyword to ride. The product itself is the same template (webtoon reader + ads), with a creation-tool disguise.
6. Growth tactics
| Channel | Evidence | Confirmed? |
|---|---|---|
| Store search: title piggybacks on the removed brand AceToon | After 10-22 put "AceToon" in the title, weekly installs rose from about 2.3k to about 13k. MangaMuse: AceToon Lite and MangaNest: QToon Lite used the same tactic over the same period, each gaining hundreds of thousands per week. | Timing matches, strong correlation (no keyword ranking data obtained) |
| Chart cycling | The Comics Top Free chart has a low bar in many small countries: 19 charted in the top 30, and the UK rose from #15 to #4. | Chart placement confirmed; how much traffic the chart placement actually drove is unverified |
| Migrated users / word of mouth | Reviews mention switching over after bato was blocked; some people mention the name "gemtoon" | User evidence exists; scale unknown |
| Paid acquisition | The app contains the AppsFlyer attribution SDK, Meta Audience Network and AdMob mediation (AppGoblin SDK scan, 10-21). No ads found in the Meta Ad Library (which only tracks listed products) or on TikTok. | Not confirmed |
| TikTok / X / Reddit content | TikHub searches for "gemtoon" and "mycomics" found no relevant videos; x-radar 0 posts | None found |
7. How many people know about it
Almost nobody knows about it. No media coverage, 0 posts on X, no dedicated TikTok content, just auto-generated data pages on AppBrain and AppGoblin. AppGoblin estimates monthly revenue under $10k, all from ads. But the play of "pirate-webtoon disguised app on Play, riding a delisted brand name" is already crowded; the same category has dozens of copycats.
8. What to borrow
- When the big official platforms and the big pirate sites go down, search demand spills over immediately. Whoever puts that brand term in the title first catches the wave; in a niche category like comics, a few days of volume is enough to break into the category top ten.
- "Shell passes review + server-pushed content", plus constantly renaming and rewriting the description, is the core survival tactic for apps like this. But it violates Google Play's IP and metadata policies and can be removed at any time (the original AceToon and the QToon clone each lasted only 1–2 months), so monetization has to recoup fast through ads.
- The only lesson a legitimate product can take: watch competitor takedowns and shutdowns, and build migration landing pages and store keyword capture around them (the compliant version, e.g. a legit alternative or migration guide after Tapas shuts down).
9. Uncertain
- After "AceToon" was removed from the title 10-28, growth continued; the cause is unverified: it could be lag in Play's search index, traffic from chart exposure, or paid acquisition.
- Paid acquisition: there is an AppsFlyer SDK, but no ad creatives were found.
- Which pirate source the content comes from and what the app actually looks like inside: not verified by installing it. The "pirate reader" read comes from reviews (bato, blurry pages, gemtoon) and early descriptions, plus common practice among similar apps.
- Whether the same team runs other shell accounts (gemtoongem.com / gemtoonou.com are the iOS Gemtoon sites with different contact emails): not verified as the same team.
