A "clean TV desktop" with a film-search player hidden inside: Capybaba re-listed in a new skin

What it is A free, ad-free Android TV launcher under 1MB, with a hidden browser inside that you control with the remote and use to pull web videos into fullscreen playback, all tied to a movie search site.

Why it took off The old film-finder player got pulled from Play, so they relaunched as a "TV launcher" that passes review, riding the "Google TV becomes Apple TV" buzz. They ran one shared brief to batch-hire small YouTube creators in Indonesia and Brazil, then used the low bar of Taiwan and Hong Kong personalization charts to win store exposure.

CHow you could copy it Don't copy the film finder. Copy the playbook: wrap your core feature in a category that is easy to explain and easy to get approved, write one brief and hire small tech creators in emerging markets in bulk, and use an accessibility service to fix Google TV's launcher-lock problem.

Grade C: the real hook is web film-finding, which sits on Play's policy line and the old package has already been removed. Strip that out and what's left is a crowded TV launcher category that hasn't proven it makes money. The playbook is worth learning; following the product isn't worth it. Few people know about it yet

Capybaba Launcher is a free, ad-free Android TV launcher under 1MB on Google Play. It got 16k installs in the week from late October to early November. Its predecessor was a film-finder player pushed in Latin America as a "pirate IPTV alternative", and the old package now won't open on Play. Below: who is behind it, what drove this round of growth, where the money might come from, and which half you should learn from and which half to avoid.

A Brazilian creator's 6-minute video

On Nov 3, Brazilian tech channel Gostavo posted "Give your Android TV this launcher with no ads!" The description reads: "An ultra-light launcher just 600 KB that makes your TV look like Apple TV", plus: "You'll see how to use the built-in hidden browser and video player with the remote." As of 11-06, the video had 3,713 views. In the two days around its release, the app's Google Play installs jumped from 20k to 26k.

Look back three months and the same brand looks different on YouTube. On Aug 28, Argentine channel CON ALVARITO titled its video "Goodbye XUPER TV, the new ultimate alternative (CAPYBARA TV on smart TVs)". Xuper TV is a popular pirate TV app in Latin America. That video's description linked to a cheap IPTV account promo, and commenters asked: "Can I watch the Argentine league on it?" "Are Fox Premium and TNT Sports included?"

One is a "clean, ad-free, Apple TV-style" launcher; the other is a "Xuper TV alternative". Behind both is the same company and the same player.

What it is

On the store page it's a TV launcher: favorites bar, continue watching, folders, icon packs, hidden apps, kids lock, weather widget. Scroll down and there's a section called "A browser built for the remote": a cursor moves with the arrow keys, and "find MP4 and HLS videos on the web page you're watching and play them fullscreen". The player supports playback speed, subtitles, audio tracks, and resume. The page ends with: "Capybaba Launcher does not provide movies or TV shows."

The developer is Capybaba AI, and the legal entity is Kosmos Mind Technology S.A. (registration location not found). The homepage of capybaba.io is titled "Capybaba AI Search", with nav tabs for TV series, movies, and new releases only. Searching "Coco" on the site returns 5 results, all from pirate streaming sources in various countries (Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, Spanish-speaking regions, and MovieBox). The download section puts this launcher, a direct APK link, the iOS "Video Player & AI Web Browser", and a Mac version side by side.

The package name uses com.tcl., which looks like it belongs to TV maker TCL, but there is no public connection between this company and TCL.

The old package is gone, so it came back under a new name

  • 7–September, the old package com.tcl.player.capybaba.browser, store name "Video Player & AI Web Browser". It was promoted by Spanish-language film-finder channels: 7-05 Spain's iluvatar (13k plays, titled "movie browser with AI"), 8-26 Argentina's Compunilla Tech (16k plays, "movies, series, anime, novels"), 8-28 CON ALVARITO (3,944 plays), and 9-21 Aplicaciones Smart, whose description literally says "This video is sponsored by CAPYBABA". The comments asked things like "how do I set it to Spanish?", "is there a live TV channel?", "is this Spain's Spanish? why is it all Latin American dubbing?"
  • 9-28, new build is live: the current one is com.tcl.launcher.player.browser.capybaba. The old build's Play page 11-06 now shows 404. From the outside you can't tell whether Google pulled it or the developer took it down themselves, but the former seems more likely.
  • Starting October, reframed as "launcher", targeting Indonesia and Brazil: 10-19 Indonesia's CobaTech (19,931 plays, "finally gives Google TV a truly clean Apple TV look"), 10-24 Brazil's O Saudosista (7,531 plays, "no more ads!"), 10-30 Brazil's Matheus Chagas, and 11-03 Gostavo.

These four videos were placed under one campaign, and the evidence is on its own blog. 10-26 The official blog published "Creator Spotlight: How CobaTech made TVs look new". The text still contains the line "Our brief calls it an Apple TV-style experience", and further down an unreplaced template placeholder: "[Creator Name] covers the highlights".

Where the traffic comes from

7 days, 15,740 new installs. By third-party estimates of daily adds, the peaks fall one or two days after the creator videos: about 1,600/day after CobaTech, about 3,100/day after Matheus and O Saudosista, about 2,000/day after Gostavo, then falling back to 900–1,500/day.

But those videos add up to only just over 30k plays, which can't account for 30k installs. The rest of the volume shows up in three visible places:

  1. Category chart. It has only charted on the Personalization category's Top Free chart: best #10 in the Taiwan store, #18 in Hong Kong (10-29), and currently 24 and 29. Those charts have a low bar. 11-06 An app that reached #2 on Taiwan's Personalization Top Free chart has only 10k installs in total. I couldn't find evidence of where its Taiwan and Hong Kong users come from.
  2. Direct search on TV. Under Gostavo's video someone asked "how do I set it as default?", and another replied "I installed it on a Philips Google TV, the original launcher didn't change, you have to open it manually". That suggests plenty of people found and installed it on their TV themselves, then discovered it wasn't very usable.
  3. APK sites and piracy communities: Softonic and APKPure both list it; a Turkish streaming forum had a June thread "Capybaba, a viewing app with Turkish dubbing"; the official site links to a Telegram group.

The rating went from 0 to 502 in under two weeks, steadily adding +56 to +78 per day. In the histogram, the counts for 1-star and 3-star reviews are identical every day, and 2-star has stayed at 0. Whether that's a scraping issue or manufactured, it can't be confirmed.

Where the money comes from

The app itself has no in-app purchases and no ads. The money most likely isn't in the app but in the film search site behind it: capybaba.io is a film SEO site with pages in dozens of languages, plus an API document for partners (with an API key). The launcher's role is to connect the TV screen to this site. There are no public figures on how it's monetized or how much it earns (inference).

Why now

"Google TV's home screen is full of ads and recommendations, I want it to look like Apple TV" was a ready-made story at the start of 2026. AT4K Launcher launched in January, and PCWorld wrote a piece specifically on "making your Google TV look like Apple TV". Monet Launcher launched in May, and an English review with 16k views drove it; it now has 125k installs. Capybaba's brief used this same framing directly.

The costume works for two reasons: a "TV launcher" is a normal category on Play and passes review more easily than a "film-finder player", and creators can talk about the launcher easily, slipping in "and there's a hidden browser" as an aside. It also uses an accessibility service to solve a real problem: many Google TVs won't let you change the default launcher. It listens for the Home button and jumps back to itself every time you press it.

But whether users buy in is split in the comments. Under CobaTech's video, a row of short praises posted on the same day ("finally no more TV ads", "this clean without spending big") reads as arranged. Under O Saudosista, someone said "it can't replace the native launcher, it only makes the system laggier", and another said "really ugly, like a knockoff box".

Looking only at the launcher, Capybaba is about the same as AT4K and Monet; the only difference is the browser that plays web videos. The "Apple TV-style launcher" category has been very crowded for 2026 years already.

If it were you

C There's something to learn from this playbook, but the product itself isn't worth it. Its real hook is web film-finding, which sits on Play's policy line, and the old package is already gone. Strip that out and what's left is a crowded launcher category, and it hasn't yet proven it makes money.

Who it suits: teams that already have a content site or tool and want to route traffic to the big screen of a TV; people who can batch-hire small creators in emerging markets.

Who it doesn't suit: indie devs who want to make money from the launcher itself (Projectivy, Monet, and AT4K already own the paid-unlock path, and the open-source ones are free); anyone who can't tolerate takedown risk.

How to do it: learn three things and don't copy the film finder. One, put your core feature inside a category that passes review and is easy to explain, so creators can pull out the highlights; two, write one brief and batch-hire small tech channels in Indonesia, Brazil, and Spanish-speaking regions, a few thousand to twenty thousand plays each, then rewrite the videos as blog posts for SEO; three, solve the real problem of "Google TV won't let you change the launcher" with an accessibility service (Play reviews these strictly, so the declaration has to be clear). If you want a clean paid launcher, benchmark against Monet, not Capybaba.

How to get users: pay YouTube creators, starting with cheap markets like Portuguese and Indonesian speakers; also push for the personalized category charts in Taiwan and Hong Kong, which are easier to crack. A few hundred installs a day can get you into the top 30 there and earn store exposure.

How early you need to be: the "Google TV becomes Apple TV" topic has been hot since early in the year, and a dozen launchers have appeared since then, so the window is narrowing. If you want to do it, get in before early 2027 with a clearly different angle.

Signs you've misread it: ① if the new package is also removed from Play within two or three months, that means "switching category to pass review" doesn't work on TV either, so don't copy it; ② conversely, if after December it keeps holding above 1,000 installs a day and people keep using the partner API on the official site, that means the "TV launcher feeding a content site" business is thicker than it looks, and it's worth studying closely how it monetizes.

Where users come from
  • Confirmed YouTube paid creators (Spanish-speaking regions, pushing the old player package): between 07-05 and 09-21 there were 7 Spanish-language videos pitching it as a "movie finder / Xuper TV alternative" (Compunilla Tech 16k views, iluvatar 13k views); Aplicaciones Smart openly states "sponsored by CAPYBABA"
  • Confirmed YouTube paid creators (Indonesia and Brazil, pushing the desktop): CobaTech 10-19 (19.9k views), O Saudosista 10-24 (7.5k), Matheus Chagas 10-30, Gostavo 11-03. The official blog's Creator Spotlight still contains "Our brief" and an unreplaced "[Creator Name]" template placeholder. Publish dates line up with install peaks.
  • Confirmed Store category chart exposure: Taiwan personalized free chart top 10-25 for 10 (AppInsider), 11-06 at #24; Hong Kong best rank #18. These charts have a low bar (Taiwan #2 had only 10k installs).
  • Confirmed Official site, APK sites, pirate-streaming communities: capybaba.io funnels all traffic to Play and direct APK links; Softonic, APKPure and CNET all list it; forum.sinetech.tr in Turkey has video-watching threads; Telegram group capybabaio
  • Inferred Paid ads: not on our tracked meta / google / tiktok ad library lists, so we can't check. It's unclear where the Taiwan and Hong Kong volume came from.

Why Capybaba Launcher - TV Home (com.tcl.launcher.player.browser.capybaba) took off

Channel: Google Play / Personalization category / developer Capybaba AI (legal entity Kosmos Mind Technology S.A.) Research date: 2026-11-06

Bottom line

It isn't a TV desktop tool built from scratch. It's the Android TV shell for Capybaba AI Search, a movie search site whose results link out to pirated video sources in various countries. The old Play package, "Video Player & AI Web Browser" (com.tcl.player.capybaba.browser), was pushed by Spanish-language YouTube creators from 7 to September as a "movie finder / Xuper TV alternative". That package is now 404 on Play. 2026-09-28 They switched to a new package name and relisted it as a "lightweight, ad-free TV desktop", with the browser and "web video sniffing player" still hidden inside. From mid-October they concentrated paid creator videos in Indonesia and Brazil around "clean Apple TV-style desktop", which rode the 2026 wave of "turn Google TV into Apple TV" and that's when it took off. So growth = paid creator videos + riding the Apple TV-style desktop trend + store exposure from low-bar personalized category charts (Taiwan, Hong Kong). The real product hook is the browser that plays web video, not the desktop itself.

Daily installs filled in by AppstoreSpy (app_day_ext): 10-22~24 about 1,664/day, 10-25~26 about 510/day, 10-30~31 about 3,120/day, 11-01~03 about 2,070/day, then down to 900–1,500/day. The peaks line up with the creator video publish dates below.
  • Rating gained 56~78 per day, going from 0 to 502 in under two weeks; ratings-to-installs about 1.7%. In the histogram, the 1-star and 3-star counts are identical every day, and the 2-star count stays at 0 (e.g. 11-06 is 22/0/22/114/342). That looks like a scraping glitch, or it could be fake ratings. Not verified.
  • Only charted on the personalized free category charts: best in Taiwan at #10 (10-29), Hong Kong #18 (10-29), then dropped to #24 / #29. Argentina, Spain, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Italy and France sat between #43 and #200. The Taiwan personalized free chart has a low bar: the #2 app had only 10k installs (Google Play v_chart, 11-06).
  • No in-app purchases, no ads (offers_iap=False, ad_supported=False); current version 00.10.25,10-23 released.
  • The store lists the release date as 2026-09-28; AppInsider first spotted it in Vietnam on 10-16, charted in Taiwan on 10-24, and reached the top 10 of the Taiwan personalized chart on 10-25 (appinsider.io/apps/video-player-ai-web-browser-6795459206).

2. What it really is: a movie search site behind it

  • The developer site capybaba.io has the title "Capybaba AI Search", and its navigation only lists TV series, movies and new streaming releases. The download buttons group the Play desktop package, the APK direct link (capybaba.b-cdn.net), the iOS "Video Player & AI Web Browser" (id6795459206, Kosmos Mind Technology S.A., listed 2026-08-02), and a macOS dmg.
  • Searching "Coco" on the site returned 5 results, all from pirate source sites: phimmoic.biz (Vietnam), 037-hdd.com (Thailand), lk21official.cc (Indonesia), pelicinehd.com (Spanish-speaking), officialmoviebox.com (MovieBox). The site also hosts a DMCA page and the Telegram group t.me/capybabaio. There's also partner API documentation requiring an x-api-key (capybaba.io/docs).
  • The desktop's own store description says it plainly: "A BROWSER BUILT FOR THE REMOTE … Finds MP4 and HLS videos on the page you are viewing and plays them full screen". The player supports playback speed, subtitles, audio tracks and resume. To stay compliant, it adds the line "does not provide movies or TV shows". The package name launcher.player.browser also shows it was always a desktop, player and browser all in one.
  • Old package com.tcl.player.capybaba.browser ("Video Player & AI Web Browser / HD Video Player & AI Browser"): AppBrain logs show 2026-08 to 09-17, and the Spanish creator videos linked to this package from July to 9-21; its Play page is now 404 (11-06 checked). New package 9-28 went live. Whether it was taken down in between is only an inference, not verified. The package name starts with com.tcl., which looks like TCL (the TV maker), but the developer has no public relationship with TCL.

3. Growth tactics (with evidence)

Phase 2 (2026-10~11): switched to a "clean Apple TV-style desktop", paid creators in Indonesia and Brazil

  • Evidence the creators were run as one campaign: the official blog published "Creator Spotlight: CobaTech" on 10-26, and the body still contains "Our brief calls it an Apple TV-style experience" and an unreplaced template placeholder "[Creator Name] covers the highlights". That means there was a shared creator brief, and the post was written from a template (capybaba.io/blog).
  • Video publish dates line up with install peaks: CobaTech 10-19 → 10-22~24 about 1,664/day; O Saudosista 10-24 → 10-27 about 1,553/day; Matheus 10-30 → 10-30~31 about 3,120/day; Gostavo 11-03 → 11-01~03 about 2,070/day (AppstoreSpy estimates).
  • All the videos together got roughly 32k views, which can't alone account for 30k installs. The rest may come from category chart exposure (Taiwan, Hong Kong), direct searches on TV Play Stores, APK sites (Softonic, APKPure, and CNET Download all list it), and ads we didn't catch. This part is not verified.
  • Ad libraries: metaads / googleads / tiktokads only track products on our list, and this app isn't on it, so we can't check. It doesn't prove they aren't running ads. On X (x-radar, 90 days), a search for capybaba returned 0 posts; no media coverage found.

The Play rival numbers come from the googleplay library app_profile(11-06). Capybaba is different from it in these ways: under 1MB, completely free with no ads; a built-in browser for the remote plus an MP4/HLS sniffing player; and it uses an accessibility service to take back the Home key on Google TV (Google TV normally doesn't let you change the default launcher).

5. Why it took off

  1. Ready-made demand, right timing: in 2026, "Google TV is full of ads, I want it to look like Apple TV" became a hot topic (PCWorld wrote about AT4K, CleanYourTV got shared around developer circles, Monet was pushed on YouTube). Capybaba's creator scripts use that exact framing: "Apple TV style, no ads."
  2. Paid creators, aimed at cheap markets: mid-sized tech channels in Indonesia, Brazil and the Spanish-speaking world, plus a standard brief and blog template.
  3. Personalized category charts have a low bar: on the personalized free charts in Taiwan and Hong Kong, a few hundred installs a day can get you into the top 30, and charting then brings store exposure. (Where the Taiwan and Hong Kong volume comes from specifically, I found no evidence.)
  4. The real hook is video watching: the old package already had a reputation in Latin America and Turkey's pirate streaming circles ("Xuper TV alternative"). The new launcher keeps the web video sniffing player, and Gostavo's video specifically mentions the "hidden browser and player." Users probably install it for video, with the desktop acting as a shell that gets past Play review (this is an inference).
  5. Where the money comes back: the app has no in-app purchases and no ads. Monetization most likely runs through the capybaba.io website (Next.js film and TV SEO pages in dozens of languages), partner APIs (x-source / x-api-key), and later traffic deals. Not verified, and no revenue has been disclosed.

6. How many people know it / has anyone copied it

  • Hardly anyone knows about it yet: no media coverage, no discussion on X, and no one has publicly disclosed revenue. There are only a few paid YouTube videos (up to 20k views) and one Turkish forum thread.
  • Copycats: I haven't seen anyone directly copying it. But similar "Apple TV-style TV launchers" have spawned in large numbers in 2026 (AT4K, Monet, CleanYourTV, Plume, Kyu...), so the category itself is already crowded.

7. What others can borrow

  • Wrap the sensitive core features (web video sniffing / browser) in a compliant, easy-to-explain category (TV launcher), and put it in the less competitive personalized chart. Publicly, only pitch "clean, no ads, Apple TV style," and let creators point out the hidden features.
  • Use one brief to batch-recruit mid-sized tech creators in emerging markets, then repurpose their videos into official blog / SEO content.
  • Uses an accessibility service to solve the real pain point that "Google TV won't let you change the default launcher."
  • Risk: Google Play cracks down hard on "piracy viewing tools" and abuse of the Accessibility Service. Old builds have already been 404, and new ones can be pulled too. Using the com.tcl. prefix also risks looking like brand impersonation.

8. Still unclear

  • Was the old package com.tcl.player.capybaba.browser taken down by Google or pulled by the developer? And what was the new listing called when it went up? AppInsider logged it as "Video Player & AI Web Browser," with the same version number as the desktop build, which suggests 9-28 was still using the player's name at launch and only switched to the desktop name later.
