"Last warning: update your PDF": a PDF reader that launched four weeks ago with 120k installs, and the 22 sock-puppet accounts behind it
What it is An Android PDF reader, annotator and scanner. It's the newest of 22 sock-puppet accounts a Vietnamese studio runs off one codebase, launched in October.
Why it took off YouTube ads disguised as system notices ("Last warning, update your PDF") target countries with low tool-chart thresholds: Italy, Poland, Turkey, Thailand. Around 100k installs a week is enough to push it up the charts.
DHow you could play it Don't build a PDF reader, and don't copy the fake warning creative. What's worth taking is the distribution structure: one codebase, several reskinned versions, small test budgets in low-threshold chart countries to see if paid acquisition pays back, all on a tool users actually need.
- Data (updated daily) · first launch 2026-10-09 · 11-07 installs 121,136
Android · Total installs worldwide Data 2026-10-29 → 2026-11-07 (10 days, 10 observations). Google's detail page only refreshes install counts every other day, so a flat day doesn't mean nobody installed.
PDF Reader: Edit & Scan launched on Android in Oct 9. Its features are no different from hundreds of rivals, yet it reached 121k installs in four weeks and hit #5 on Italy's Tools Top Free chart. The product has little to do with it. A Vietnamese studio runs 22 accounts off the same code and buys YouTube ads that fake a system prompt ("Your PDF has expired, please update"), aimed at countries where the tools chart is easy to crack. Copying a PDF reader makes no sense. This piece is about how the machine works and why you shouldn't follow it.
An ad that looks like a system notice
On Aug 2025, 6 at 0:47 a.m., someone on the Korean forum clien posted that while watching YouTube on her phone, a screen popped up reading "마지막 경고 pdf 파일을 업데이트 하시오" (Last warning: update the PDF file). She tapped it and installed a "latest PDF" app from the Play Store. The top reply said it was a fake warning ad, the app would keep sending notifications, she should delete it and open PDFs with Google Drive. The poster replied: "It didn't look like an ad, I got tricked." As of Nov 6 the thread had 33,906 views, and people were still replying in October this year.
The same thing has happened in other languages. In YouTube's official Help Community, someone posted "Expired pdf warning" in Jul 2026 1: "How do I turn off this PDF warning? I can't watch videos." In Sep 14 someone replied: "I didn't do anything, I was just watching YouTube, and I don't know who to report it to."
Public sources don't reveal who runs these ads (advertisers, creative volume and spend are unverified). But the Play Store reviews from people who installed these PDF readers are blunt. Under sister accounts on the same codebase, a Korean user wrote "유투브 경고 광고로 받은 앱" (an app I got from a YouTube warning ad, 11-01). An Italian user wrote "I was practically forced to install it just to use YouTube." A Polish user said the ad cut into a podcast they were listening to and took up half the screen, and tapping "cancel" didn't close it.
What the app itself is
It's a PDF reader: open PDF, Word, Excel and PPT files, highlight, annotate, scan, convert, merge and split, with dark mode. The store listing is tidy, with no overreaching claims. The developer is listed as TeraSoft Limited, the contact email is a personal Gmail, the privacy policy is hosted on Google Sites, and the developer website is an empty subdomain used only to host an app-ads.txt file. app-ads.txt is a file that tells ad networks "the ad inventory in this app is mine," which signals that it mainly earns from in-app ads.
The version number is 1.0.2-Tera. The suffix is the clue.
22 accounts, one codebase
Searching Google Play for PDF readers with a brand-suffixed version number and in-app purchase tiers of $3.29–$39.99 turns up 22 apps across 22 different developer accounts, with 59.4M installs in total and 7M new installs over the last 3.77 days (Google Play installs, 11-06). Every package name follows the same template, com.<brand>.pdfeditor.pdfreader, the developer websites are almost all xxxxxxx.app-ads-txt.com, and most contact emails are Gmail addresses with Vietnamese names.

The flagship, PDF ProX, has 33M installs after a year and a half and is #1 on Korea's Productivity Top Free chart. The other accounts launch at a rate of one to three a month. October alone brought Tera, Nimbussoft, Pixsoft and Lunara, and NimbusSoft's title is word-for-word the same as Tera's. The likely playbook (inferred): reskin the same code, open a new account, put more money behind whichever account's ads pay back, and when an older account gets buried by bad reviews or pulled from the store, the next account takes over.
How the 120k installs happened
| Date | Total installs |
|---|---|
| 10-24 | About 2,800 (third-party estimate) |
| 10-29 | 18k |
| 10-31 | 25k |
| 11-03 | 87k |
| 11-05 | 102k |
| 11-06 | 121k |
From Oct 31 to Nov 3 it added 61.5k installs in three days. That stair-step jump is what a sudden budget increase looks like, not word of mouth. Where it charted is telling too: on Italy's Tools Top Free chart it climbed from #10-29 to #104, then from #11-01 to #11-04 for four straight days, then slid back to #5,11-06 and #12. On the same day it was #48 on Italy's overall app chart. On Poland's Tools chart it went from #81 to #11, on Thailand's from #111 to #24, on Turkey's from #144 to #23, and on Korea's from #185 to #52 (Google Play charts).
Why Italy, Poland, Turkey and Thailand? Their tools charts have low thresholds: a few tens of thousands of weekly installs can land you in the top 20, and making the chart brings in extra organic traffic. Judging by the tone of the reviews, the people who fall for a "system warning" are mostly older users and those less familiar with phones (inferred).
Its own reviews are still few, and no rating shows in the store yet. A one-star review from Italy on Nov 2 reads: "l'ho già installata continua a rompere le balle" (I already installed it, and it keeps bugging me). The same person was hit again and again by the same ads, and the first install was probably another account in the network.
Where the money comes back
Two sources: full-screen in-app ads and cross-promotion (the "keeps popping up, pushes other apps" complaints in reviews), plus in-app purchases of $3.29 to $39.99. A Polish user, under a sister account, complained: "It said free, and in the end you still have to pay." None of the 22 accounts is currently on any grossing chart, so in-app purchases are probably a minor share. The core business looks more like arbitrage: buy installs through Google ads and earn it back through in-app ads such as AdMob (inferred, no revenue data available).
No one has publicly reported this company's revenue, and no media outlet has written about it. What's been discussed is only the "fake YouTube PDF warning" phenomenon. Korean Naver and tistory have anti-scam explainers, and on Reddit someone said their aunt accidentally installed a PDF editor while watching YouTube. Nobody has linked any of it to this studio.
Who it's competing with
PDF readers are among the most crowded categories in Google Play's tools section (Google Play installs, 11-06):
- Established brands: Adobe Acrobat Reader 945M, WPS Office 832M, CamScanner 582M, plus Xodo, iLovePDF and MobiOffice.
- An earlier tool portfolio: deepthought.industries' PDF Reader 433M, EZTech 252M, Simple Design 92.5M.
- Another white-label PDF portfolio: Stackwise Studio, Lumio Tech, Techverse and Exo Technology share the same app-ads-txt subdomain, with 5.51M to 21.2M per account. Over 2026 to October 6, a dozen more launched using the same playbook.
- The biggest competitor is the OS itself: Google Files, Chrome and Drive can all open PDFs directly, and most Android phones don't need another reader installed.
This last point also explains why it fakes system warnings. Users don't need it, so it only gets installed if people believe they can't view their file without it.
If it were you
D, know it, don't follow it. This app's only growth engine is ads that fake system prompts. There's nothing in the product to learn from. Take that engine away and what's left is a category packed with billion-install rivals, where the OS already ships a built-in equivalent.
Who it's for: teams running paid acquisition on tools who want a reference for how this category is bought right now: many accounts in parallel, brand suffixes in version numbers, targeting low-threshold tool-chart countries to climb charts, and app-ads.txt hosting so every new account can plug into ad networks. None of these tactics breaks rules on their own, and they can work on a tool you build that users genuinely need.
Who it's not for: indie developers who want to build a "better PDF reader" are up against Adobe, WPS, built-in OS features, and dozens of sock-puppet accounts spending money on installs every week. Anyone who wants to copy the "last warning" creative should know it violates Google Ads' misleading content policy and Play's deceptive behavior policy. The penalty doesn't stop at one account: developer accounts, ad accounts and payment details can all be caught in the crackdown.
How to play it: if you take anything from this, take the distribution structure, not the category. Build a tool users really need that the OS doesn't already include. Prepare two or three reskinned versions from one codebase, and in a low-threshold chart country (Italy, Poland, Turkey, Thailand or similar), test each version with a small budget to see whether paid acquisition pays back.
How to acquire users: Google App Campaigns with store keywords. Make the creative show clearly what the tool helps people accomplish, and don't impersonate the system.
Deadline: No window. This category won't get better at any point in time.
Where the math could be wrong: ① If these sock-puppet accounts are still around three months from now (Tera, Nimbussoft and Pixsoft, all launched in October, not removed before February 2027, with new accounts still launching monthly), then Google is largely not policing this creative, and the margins are thicker than they look. Redo the numbers. ② Conversely, if the flagship PDF ProX is removed before year-end, or the "PDF expired" help threads on YouTube stop appearing, the window has closed and there's little left to learn from.
Data and sources
- Installs, charts, reviews and IAP price tiers: public Google Play pages and charts, 10-29 to 11-06. The 10-24 and 10-27 install figures are AppstoreSpy estimates.
- 22 sister apps: filtered on Google Play by version-number format, IAP price tiers, package names and developer websites. Whether they belong to the same company is unconfirmed; the evidence is circumstantial (emails, package names, price tiers).
- User complaints: clien.net forum thread (2025-08-06,11-06 views when checked, 33,906); YouTube Help Community "Expired pdf warning" (2026-07-01); Naver Knowledge iN, tistory, Reddit r/mildlyinfuriating and r/AndroidQuestions.
- Ads: no public ad records were found for these package names. Advertisers, creative volume and spend are unverified. Not finding records doesn't mean no ads were run.
- Revenue: no public data. The "mainly ad arbitrage" reading in this piece is an inference.

Why PDF Reader: Edit & Scan (TeraSoft Limited, com.tera.pdfeditor.pdfreader) gets traction
Bottom line
It has no product differences. It's a new entry in a white-label PDF reader template matrix run by a studio in Vietnam. The studio has at least 22 developer accounts running the same codebase, with version numbers carrying brand suffixes such as 1.0.2-Tera, 1.1.6-Zentrix, 2.0.2-Office. Growth comes from paid YouTube and other Google ad placements that impersonate system alerts ("PDF needs update / final warning"), mainly targeting Italy, Poland, Korea, Turkey and Thailand. Once installed, users are monetized through full-screen ads and $3.29–$39.99 in-app purchases. Its rise is due to this user-acquisition machine more than to the product itself.
1. Basic data (googleplay library, 2026-10-29 to 11-06)
- Store launch 2026-10-09, version always
1.0.2-Tera. Contains ads; in-app purchases changed from $19.99–29.99 to $3.29–39.99 (snapshot from 11-06), identical to other sibling apps in the matrix. - Installs: AppstoreSpy estimates 10-24 at 2,767 → 10-27 at 18k. Our own captures: 10-29 at 17,982 → 10-31 at 25,089 → 11-03 at 86,611 → 11-05 at 101,914 → 11-06 at 121,136. +103k new over 7 days; +61.5k combined across the three days 10-31 to 11-03.
- Ratings: the store doesn't show a rating count yet; the review sample has only 6 reviews, all from the Italian store, and 2 of them are 1-star complaints about being "annoying, keeps popping up, I already installed it and it still nags me".
- Charts (chart_rank): Italy utilities Top Free 10-29 #104, then from 11-01 to 11-04 it held #5,11-06 for 4 days before dropping to #12; Poland utilities 81 → 11; Thailand 111 → 24; Turkey 144 → 23; Korea 185 → 52; it has also charted in the utilities charts of France, Spain, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Japan and Germany. 11-06 Italy app overall chart #48.
- Developer: TeraSoft Limited. The developer site is
w764ff7b2.app-ads-txt.com, just an empty shell hosting app-ads.txt, used to declare monetization identity to ad networks. The contact email is a personal Gmail ([email protected]), and the privacy policy sits on Google Sites. This account also publishes GPS Location - Phone Finder (com.tera.gpstracker) and File Recovery (per the Google Play developer page and AppBrain).
2. Competitors (googleplay library install counts, 11-06)
1. Sibling template apps from the same studio (most important): apps in the library with the "number-brand" version format and in-app purchases of $3.29/3.49–$39.99 total 22, spread across 22 developer accounts, with 59.4M cumulative installs and 7M new over 3.77 days. The earliest was listed on 2025-04-07. Some of them:

| PDF Reader: Edit PDF | GoPix Studio | 2026-09-28 | 39k | 10k | 1.0.5-gopix |
| PDF Reader: Edit & Scan | TeraSoft Limited | 2026-10-09 | 121k | 103k | 1.0.2-Tera |
| PDF Reader: Edit & Scan (same name) | NimbusSoft Technologies | 2026-10-15 | 11k | — | 1.0.2-Nimbussoft |
| PDF Reader: Edit PDF | PixSoft Technologies | 2026-10-16 | 5,769 | 4,667 | 1.0.2-Pixsoft |
Others include PocketUtilities, Neo Utilities, BitCraft, UltraTools, OneTap Tools, Hypers Tools, CoreTools Lab, Toolbox Pro. Package names follow com.<brand>.pdfeditor.pdfreader or com.<brand>.pdfreader.pdfeditor, and developer sites are almost all xxxxxxx.app-ads-txt.com. Contact emails are mostly Vietnamese names on Gmail, such as nguyentngas, tranliuynkhai, phamthanhtrucbaobinh2021, chungminhtu, vuongquyenbkav2020. Another, LunaraSoft (com.luna.pdfeditor.pdfreader, 1.0.2-lunara), uses the older price tier.
2. Other white-label matrices in the same niche: Stackwise Studio, Lumio Tech, Techverse and Exo Technology share the same jb6575965.app-ads-txt.com, with single accounts at 5.85M–21.2M. There's also EZTech (250M), deepthought.industries (430M), Simple Design (92.5M), and others. PDF readers are among the most crowded utilities categories on Google Play; over 2026 years, 6 to October, more than a dozen apps using the same playbook launched (BitTech Global, Easy App Tools, MoranJiyounge 1.45M, etc.).
3. Brands and big players: Adobe Acrobat Reader (945M), WPS Office (832M), CamScanner (582M), MobiOffice, Xodo, iLovePDF. Google Files and Chrome / Google Drive also open PDFs natively, so most Android phones don't need a separate PDF reader at all.
3. Where users come from
- Impersonated warning ads on YouTube / Google ad slots (strong evidence)
- A Korean review on a sibling app reads "유투브 경고 광고로 받은 앱" (app installed from a YouTube warning ad), and 11-01 appears under both PDF ProX and OrionMobi. Another: "업데이트 하라해서 들어가면 계속 이것저것 설치해라…협박까지" (it said to update, then kept making me install other things, even with threats).
- A review on Italian Neo Utilities: "sono stato praticamente costretto ad installarla per poter usare utube" (I was practically forced to install it to use YouTube).
- A review on Polish Trusted Mobile Utilities: the ad was forced into a podcast being played, covering more than half the screen, and "Cancel" doesn't close it.
- Reviews on this app itself in Italian: "invasiva e ripetitiva e sempre ripresentata" and "l'ho già installata continua a rompere le balle" (I already installed it and it keeps bugging me). This suggests the same users are hit repeatedly by the same ad batch, and what they installed may be another account in the matrix.
- Many users are asking for help online: clien.net "유튜브에 '마지막 경고 pdf 업데이트 하시오'"; Naver Knowledge iN and tistory (pinx) classify it as a "fake PDF update warning"; the YouTube Help Community has a thread titled "Expired pdf warning"; a Reddit r/mildlyinfuriating post says YouTube keeps showing scam-style ads for "download another document reader"; an r/AndroidQuestions user says their aunt installed a PDF editor by mistake through a YouTube ad. All from Jina search results.
- Our googleads library doesn't track these package names, so we can't see creative counts or spend, and we haven't verified who the advertiser is.
- Target only low-competition, high-conversion markets: traction mainly in Italy, Poland, Turkey, Thailand and Korea. Utilities charts in these markets have low entry barriers, and a few tens of thousands of installs can push an app into the top 20. The users skew toward older people or those unfamiliar with phones, who are most vulnerable to "system warnings"; this is inferred from the tone of reviews and not verified.
- Matrix rotation: the same codebase spawns 1–3 new accounts and package names each month. For example, October alone has Tera, Nimbussoft, Pixsoft and Lunara. Budget goes to whichever account runs well, and old accounts getting crushed by bad reviews or delisted don't hurt the overall operation. This app's title "PDF Reader: Edit & Scan" is identical to NimbusSoft's.
- ASO: package names, titles and descriptions are packed with PDF / Edit / Scan / Convert keywords, so searching "PDF" in the store also brings some organic traffic, though its contribution is smaller than paid acquisition.
- Content / creators / media: neither X (x-radar) nor the web has any positive recommendations, only explainers calling it a "scam ad".
4. Where the money comes from
- Contains ads (ad_supported=True), and every account has app-ads.txt configured, indicating monetization mainly through ad networks such as AdMob. The user complaints about "constant pop-ups and nagging to install other apps" also point to full-screen ads and cross-promotion.
- In-app purchases of $3.29–$39.99. A Polish review says "claimed free, but in the end you still have to pay" and "scam", showing there's a subscription paywall.
- None of the 22 accounts in the library currently appear on any top-grossing chart, so in-app revenue is probably not large. The real business is likely an arbitrage of "buy users with Google ads, earn it back with in-app ads", plus a small amount of subscriptions. Not verified.
5. Visibility
No one has publicly disclosed this product's revenue, and no media has written about it. What's being discussed is the "fake PDF warning ads on YouTube" phenomenon, mostly Korean user help threads and anti-scam explainers. No one has pointed out this studio or its matrix.
VI. Differentiation
There's no functional differentiation: reading, annotating, scanning, converting, merging and splitting are generic features shared by hundreds of PDF readers. Its real "edge" is distribution: (1) one white-label codebase reskinned into more than twenty accounts; (2) paid placements of creatives that impersonate system alerts on YouTube and other Google ad slots; (3) chasing utilities charts in mid-sized European and Asian countries with low entry barriers; (4) using ads plus a paywall to earn back acquisition costs. That's why it charted.
7. What to borrow and the risks
- Worth borrowing: a white-label template plus multiple accounts, testing creatives and markets in parallel, managing brands through version-number suffixes; targeting utilities chart entry points in low-barrier countries; app-ads.txt hosting services let even empty shell accounts connect to ad networks.
- Risks: creatives impersonating system warnings violate Google Ads' misleading content policy and Play's deceptive ads policy, and accounts in the matrix can be banned or delisted at any time. Bad reviews are common (PDF ProX's review sample averages 3.18 across 335 reviews). User value is low, so retention is very likely poor. Not recommended for copying; it only works as a reference for "how this category is being bought".
8. What's still uncertain
- There's no direct evidence for the advertiser account, creative count, spend, or the specific placements (YouTube in-stream vs. display network). The googleads library doesn't track them.
- We haven't confirmed which Vietnamese company operates the matrix; we only have three indirect clues: the email names, the tech stack, and the price tiers.
- Not verified whether com.tera.verse (TeraTV short drama) is the same developer.
- Retention, ARPU, and real in-app purchase revenue are unknown.
