> It didn't go viral; it was bought. Singapore ad agency Thebes Ads sold ads and bought paid traffic for itself. It used one “tools + home screen” template across two accounts to roll out a string of apps, releasing them in batches, and pushed one onto the South Korea photography category chart.

# The beauty camera is just a hook: how an ad company makes money by "replacing your home screen"

**What it is** An ordinary Android beauty camera. Once installed, it asks you to set it as your phone's default home screen, and it earns from ads shown on that home screen.

**Why it took off** It didn't take off on its own. It was bought: the Singapore ad company Thebes Ads sells ads and buys its own traffic, and it used the same "tool + home screen" template across two accounts to push a string of apps, released in batches, up to the top of the Korea photography category chart.

**C** **How you could follow it** Don't build a beauty camera home screen. A team with paid-acquisition capability could borrow the idea: attach a high-search-volume tool to a high-frequency entry point like the home screen or lock screen, spend a small budget on one country, and scale up only if the numbers work.

Grade C: four or five apps with the same name and template already exist, and "tool + home screen" already fills a large part of Play. Its advantage is that it is itself an AdX seller and runs its own paid acquisition, which followers can't get, and it carries the risk of removal under policy. What's worth learning is the idea of "attaching a low-frequency tool to a high-frequency entry point." Few people know about it yet

Data (updated daily) · first launch 2026-08-26 · 11-07 installs 93,466

Android · Total installs worldwide

Data 2026-10-29 → 2026-11-07 (10 days, 10 observations). Google's detail page only refreshes install counts every other day, so a flat day doesn't mean nobody installed.

In Oct 30, an app called "Beauty Camera & Photo Launcher" climbed to #8 on the Korea Google Play photography free chart. Two months after launch it had 93k installs and not a single rating. It doesn't want you to take photos. It wants you to set it as your phone's default home screen. The developer is a Singapore ad company, and it published the same app under two developer accounts. This piece covers how the playbook makes money, who is running it, and whether it's worth following.

### What happens when you open it

The second paragraph of the store page says in capital letters: "THIS APP INCLUDES A HOME LAUNCHER." During setup it asks you to choose it as the default Home app. After that, every time you press Home you see its home screen and app drawer. Only when you tap the "Beauty" shortcut on its home screen and swipe right do you get the camera and retouching tools.

This disclosure was added in the Oct 31 23.0 version. Before that it was called "Beauty Camera - HD Selfie Home," and the version number jumped from 10.0 in Aug 27 to 23.0. The new listing also adds "AI looks require a subscription," but the store shows no in-app purchase prices, so for now the money still comes from ads (the store labels it "Contains ads").

### What it is

A fairly ordinary beauty camera: filters, retouching, collages. The real product is the home screen.

An ordinary beauty camera gets opened once or twice a week, but a home screen gets returned to dozens of times a day. Each time you return to the home screen, the app comes back to the foreground, which means it can show app-open ads, interstitials, and native ads. Many users don't know where to switch back to their default home screen, so uninstalls are rare. (The revenue mechanism in this paragraph is an inference; the store page does confirm that it guides you to set it as the default home screen and that it contains ads.)

### The installs are bought

Installs don't climb steadily. They run for a while, then stop (September through late October are estimates from the third-party tool AppstoreSpy; the figures from 10-29 onward are Google Play installs):

| Period | Daily new installs |
|---|---|
| 9-11 ~ 9-18 | 1,000–2,500 |
| 9-19 ~ 9-29 | 30–370 |
| 10-01 ~ 10-04 | About 4,700 |
| 10-05 ~ 10-12 | 6–111 |
| 10-16 ~ 10-27 | Another wave, 10-26/27 per day, 2,000–3,000 |
| 10-29 ~ 10-31 | 0 |
| 11-01 ~ 11-02 | 6,328, 11,328 |
| 11-05 | 0 |

Organic growth doesn't switch on and off like this. This is what batched campaigns look like. 93k installs, 0 ratings, and 0 reviews suggest that almost nobody found it on their own and kept using it. Neither the Meta nor the Google ad library shows creatives matching its package name or company name, so exactly where the traffic was bought is uncertain.

The charts follow the same pattern. The Korea photography category free chart has a low bar, and a few thousand installs a day is enough to reach the top 10. It has also reached about the 70 spot on similar charts in Spain and Mexico. After it stopped buying traffic, its ranking slid steadily. In Nov 6 it fell to 141 in Korea, and in every other country it dropped off the chart entirely.

### Who's behind it

Thebes Ads was registered in Singapore in 2023 September (Singapore company registry). Its website says it is a Google MCM partner and an AdX seller, and it has its own publisher monetization dashboard, PubHub. CEO Arjun Chadha describes the company on LinkedIn as an "AI marketing and user acquisition company," and about two months ago announced 2M US dollars for an "AI app growth plan."

Play also has a developer account named Ignia LLC, run by the same people. Ignia's website homepage copy matches Thebes's website word for word, every Ignia app uses the same developer email, and the username is the name of Thebes co-founder Adesh. A cleaner app under the Thebes account also uses that email. Ignia first published a same-named "Beauty Camera & Photo Launcher" in Aug 13, with a full description identical to this one, and Thebes released this app 13 days later.

The two-account matrix (Google Play installs, 11-06):

| Account | App | Launched | Installs | 7 new in the last day |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ignia | Gallery - Photo, Video & Home | 3-05 | 1.21M | +278k |
| Thebes | Gallery - Photo, Video & Home | 8-26 | 1.07M | +27k |
| Thebes | Super Phone Cleaner And Home | 10-09 | 254k | — |
| Ignia | Beauty Camera & Photo Launcher | 8-13 | 223k | +61k |
| Ignia | Cleaner - Storage & Home Tools | 10-14 | 152k | +129k |
| Thebes | Beauty Camera & Photo Launcher | 8-26 | 93k | +22k |
| Ignia | Messages: Text Messenger Home | 8-19 | 77k | +21k |
| Thebes | Video Downloader & Home | 10-19 | 23k | +23k |

Every name is "tool + Home." Camera, gallery, cleaner, SMS, video downloader, QR scanner: the same template with a different skin. The ones that work (gallery past a million) keep getting money; the ones that don't get shut down. This one counts as an average performer in the matrix.

Their edge is that they sell ads themselves: ad fill and CPMs run higher than for an ordinary small developer, the money spent on acquisition and the money earned from ads are reconciled inside the same company, and as long as the numbers work, they keep spending.

### Who's competing

The beauty camera category itself is a red ocean. On Play, established products already have tens of millions of installs: Leopard V7's "Beauty Camera - Selfie, Sticker" has 62.6M, and SNOW's SODA has 44.4M. "Beauty Camera: AI Photo Editor," launched in Jul 30, already has 1.28M, with +220k in 7 days. This app has no functional advantage at all.

The "tool + home screen" playbook is also not new:

| Peers | Scale (Google Play installs, 11-06) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Idea Clan "HD Beauty Camera - Selfie Home" | 140k | Another company, the same beauty camera + home screen |
| "Gallery - Photo, Video & Home" | Ignia 1.21M, Thebes 1.07M, SAMP 345k, BlazingTrail 270k | Four accounts publishing under the same name, most likely the same white-label source code |
| QR & Barcode Scanner, Launcher / JunkRemover Launcher / Settings Home | 2.16M / 1.23M / 910k | QR scanners, cleaners, and settings apps all have a home screen bolted on |
| Hole U Can Eat Home App / Barber Salon Launcher | 12.8M / 7.16M | Casual games do it too, at larger scale |

There's a large pile of apps on Play whose descriptions say "set as default Home." This one isn't even the first in its own group.

### If it were you

**Verdict: C.** Don't copy this one as-is. It has no real user reviews, the volume is bought, and there are already four or five clones with the same name and template. Its edge (they own the AdX seller side and run their own paid acquisition) isn't something a follower gets. The idea worth stealing: put a low-frequency tool on a system entry point people touch every day, and per-user ad revenue gets much higher.

**Who it suits:** Teams already running an Android tool portfolio, with reliable paid acquisition, several developer accounts, and a clear sense of what each user costs to buy versus what ads bring back. For them, this is just another category template.

**Who it doesn't suit:** Solo indie devs with one developer account who want a lasting product. Google Play bans manipulating device settings and disruptive ads, so apps like this face high removal and account-ban risk, and losing the one account means losing everything. Also not for anyone who can't buy installs: these apps don't grow organically.

**How to do it (if you must):** Skip the beauty-camera-home niche, which is already crowded with several copies of the same template. Find a utility keyword with high search volume that hasn't been paired with a home-screen replacement yet, or use a different entry point (lock screen, keyboard, notification shade). Put "this app replaces your home screen" prominently on the store page, the way it did in its 10-31 version, to lower complaint rates. Test with a small budget in one country first: if ad revenue covers acquisition cost within a few days, scale it; if not, stop.

**How to acquire users:** Paid acquisition, amplified by charting in low-barrier countries. Photography category charts in South Korea and Spanish-speaking markets reach the top with a few thousand installs a day, and that picks up a bit of organic store traffic too.

**When to get in:** This play doesn't depend on timing; it depends on whether each app pays for itself on its own. The biggest unknown is when platforms will tighten up.

**What would show we got it wrong:** ① Google Play issues an explicit policy against "utility apps bundled with home launchers", or this batch gets removed in bulk. That would mean the window has closed and C overestimated it. ② Thebes or similar apps keep gaining installs with little paid promotion and start getting genuine ratings. That would mean the home-screen format actually retains users, not just ad slots, and is worth a second look. ③ A new AI subscription shows up in the store's in-app purchase prices and people buy it. That would mean these apps found a second revenue stream beyond ads, which widens the room to follow.

Where users come from

- Inferred **Paid acquisition / traffic swapping (in batches)** : AppstoreSpy's curve shows on-off pulses (09-11–18, 10-01–04, 10-16–27, 11-01–04), with the last stop around 0; 93k installs, 0 ratings; the parent company calls itself an "AI marketing and user acquisition company". No creatives tracked in the Meta/Google ad libraries.

- **Confirmed** **Store category charting (low-barrier countries)** : googleplay library chart_rank: best photography free-chart position in South Korea was #8, Spain 71, Mexico 73; rankings fell after acquisition stopped.

- Inferred **Store search piggybacking on category keywords** : the name directly uses the high-volume keyword "Beauty Camera", and 10-31 was renamed "Beauty Camera & Photo Launcher".

- Inferred **Cross-promotion across a company portfolio** : the Thebes and Ignia accounts have 9 "utility + Home" apps run by the same team (adesh@ignia.cc, identical website copy).

- Inferred **Content / creators / media / X / Reddit** : searches only turn up store pages and aggregator sites; x-radar shows no discussion in the last 30 days.

## Why Beauty Camera & Photo Launcher (com.thebes.beautycamera) got traction

> Channel: Google Play | Developer: Thebes Ads PTE LTD (Singapore) | Launch: 2026-08-26 | Research date: 2026-11-06

### Bottom line

It isn't a beauty camera that succeeded on its own product merits. It's one of several "utility + home-screen launcher" ad-slot apps that **an ad-monetization company (Thebes Ads / Ignia, the same Indian founders)** mass-produces from one template: the camera/photo features are bait, you're asked to set it as your default home screen, and every press of the Home button after that is another foreground impression and ad opportunity. The install curve comes in pulses that line up with ad-spend switches. 93k installs and 0 ratings, with no trace of organic word of mouth. This app's description was copied word for word from the Ignia LLC sister app of the same name.

### 1. Data (source: our googleplay database, 2026-11-06)

- Lifetime global installs 93,466 (detail-page maxInstalls, tier 50,000+); last 7 days +21,844.

- **Rating count is empty, 0 reviews** (app_snap is NULL every day). 90k installs with zero ratings is highly abnormal: it means almost no organic users who stuck around, or that most people were pulled in by ads and left quickly.

- AppstoreSpy's estimated since-launch curve (app_day_ext) is a classic **pulse pattern** :
    - 09-11 → 09-18:4,232 → 19,316 (1–2.5 thousand per day)
    - 09-19 → 09-29: nearly stopped (30–370 per day)
    - 10-01 → 10-04:27,743 → 41,743 (about 4.7 thousand per day)
    - 10-05 → 10-12: nearly 0 (6–111 per day)
    - Another wave starting 10-16, 10-26/27 at 2–3 thousand per day
    - 10-29 → 10-31:0
    - 11-01 → 11-02: +6,328, +11,328 (the single biggest day), then 1.5–2 thousand, 11-05 then 0

Organic growth doesn't look like "on–off–on"; this is what batch-based paid acquisition (or traffic swaps/incentives) looks like.

- Charts: only on the PHOTOGRAPHY free category chart. **South Korea** was best at #8 (10-30); also Spain 71, Mexico 73, Argentina/South Africa 133, US 170 (only 1 days), Thailand 198; after 11-03 only South Korea was left, and it fell to 141 by 11-06. The South Korea photography free chart has a low bar: a few thousand installs a day can push into the top 10, and rankings slid steadily after paid acquisition stopped.

- Versions: 10.0 (08-27) → **23.0 (10-31 update)** ; the chart title changed from "Beauty Camera - HD Selfie Home" to "Beauty Camera & Photo Launcher" (both titles appear in chart_rank). The new description adds "AI looks require a subscription", but iap_range in the library is still empty: monetization is still mainly ads, and the subscription is a recent test.

- Store listing marks it as containing ads (ad_supported = True).

### 2. Who it is: an ad agency that went into the traffic business itself

- **Thebes Ads Pte Ltd** : Singapore company, UEN 202336250E, registered 2023-09-08 (sgpbusiness.com, companies.sg). The website calls it a Google MCM Partner and AdX Seller; the product is a publisher monetization back end, PubHub (thebesads.com; pitchonnet.com 2024-12-18 covered the PubHub launch). The team page lists founder and CEO Arjun Chadha, co-founder **Adesh Sarwan** , and Chetas Bhardiya (thebesads.com/about). Arjun Chadha's LinkedIn header reads "www.Ignia.cc"; about two months ago he posted that Thebes is an "AI marketing and user acquisition company", and for its third anniversary announced 2M USD for an "AI App Growth Program" (linkedin.com/posts/arjuchadha_thebes-ai-growth-program…).

- **Ignia (ignia.cc / Ignia LLC on Play) is the same company** : the ignia.cc homepage copy, "trusted leader in digital monetization, certified as a Google MCM Partner and AdX Seller, with over 20 years of industry expertise", matches Thebes's website word for word. Every Ignia app on Play uses the developer email **adesh@ignia.cc** , and the Super Phone Cleaner And Home app under the Thebes account also uses adesh@ignia.cc (googleplay library, app table).

- **This app's description is identical to Ignia's com.hdcamera.beauty** (the two descriptions in the library match in full), and the name is the same (Beauty Camera & Photo Launcher). The Ignia version launched 08-13, reached 223k installs, and added +61k over 7 days, with the same 0 ratings (the chrome-stats page also shows 0.00 (0)). The Thebes version launched 13 days later: a copy of the same template on a second developer account.

- The account portfolio (googleplay library, 11-06): | Account | App | Launched | Installs | 7-day gain | |---|---|---|---|---| | Ignia LLC | Gallery - Photo, Video & Home | 2026-03-05 | 1,213,231 | +277,813 | | Thebes | Gallery - Photo, Video & Home | 2026-08-26 | 1,067,652 | +27,147 | | Thebes | Super Phone Cleaner And Home | 2026-10-09 | 253,871 | — | | Ignia LLC | Beauty Camera & Photo Launcher | 2026-08-13 | 222,966 | +60,727 | | Ignia LLC | Cleaner - Storage & Home Tools | 2026-10-14 | 152,119 | +128,500 | | **Thebes** | **Beauty Camera & Photo Launcher** | 2026-08-26 | 93,466 | +21,844 | | Ignia LLC | Messages: Text Messenger Home | 2026-08-19 | 76,957 | +20,655 | | Ignia LLC | All Video Downloader And Home | 2026-02-15 | 30,876 | +20,785 | | Thebes | Video Downloader & Home | 2026-10-19 | 23,092 | +23,083 |

Ignia also has QR Code Scanner And Home (visible on the Play developer page, not in the library). The naming is consistent: "utility + Home/Launcher".

### 3. Competitors

#### 3.1 Plain beauty cameras (same thing, no desktop)

This category is a red ocean on Play, with older products that have tens of millions of installs (googleplay library): Leopard V7 "Beauty Camera -Selfie, Sticker" 62.6M (2020), SNOW's SODA 44.4M (2018, #6 on the Korea Photo Top Grossing chart), Easyelife 31.8M, iJoysoft 26.6M, two Mobile_V5 apps at about 20M each, Wolf Kan "Beauty Camera Sweet Makeup App" 19.6M (listed 2025-12), iMediaStar 16.4M. This year's new Nubivio "Beauty Camera :AI Photo Editor" (2026-07-30) is already at 1.28M, +220k in 7 days. Then there are the big players: Snow/B612, Meitu/BeautyPlus, and the beauty modes built into each phone maker's camera. Next to these, Thebes has no feature advantage at all, and it is two orders of magnitude smaller in scale.

#### 3.2 Same playbook, "tool + desktop" apps (the real peers)

A large group of apps have "default Home app / includes a home launcher" in their listing, which shows this is an established school on Play over 2025–2026 years:

- Beauty camera desktops with the same name and template: Ignia LLC "Beauty Camera & Photo Launcher" 223k (08-13), Idea Clan "HD Beauty Camera - Selfie Home" 140k (08-24, developer email on lookfinity.com).

- Gallery desktops with the same template, "Gallery - Photo, Video & Home": Ignia 1.21M, Thebes 1.07M, SAMP TECHNOLOGIES 345k (09-02), BlazingTrail Technologies (India) 271k (08-27). **Even the names are identical** , so these are most likely the same white-label source code published under different accounts.

- Other tool category: JunkRemover Launcher 1.23M (2026-07), Settings Home 910k (2026-08-31,7 days +290k), Volume Control Home 1.01M, Messages: SMS Messenger Home 890k, Contacts - Phone Call Launcher 510k, PDF Reader Home App 990k, QR & Barcode Scanner, Launcher 2.16M, RestoreMate–Home App 880k……

- Games do the same, and at bigger volume: Hadiz Studio's "Hole U Can Eat Home App" 12.8M, Gamnest's "Barber Salon Launcher" 7.16M, Hero Fighting Games' "Duck Blast Launcher" 6.43M / "Shooting Skies Launcher" 7 days +640k, Mr.Bunn's "It's Pee Time Home Screen" 5.82M.

- Real launchers (Nova, Microsoft Launcher, Niagara, Smart Launcher, Transsion's HiOS/XOS) are a different thing: they sell the desktop itself, while Thebes-style apps sell "install a tool, get a new desktop as a side effect."

**Bottom line** : there are many competitors doing the same thing, and dozens of companies already run the same playbook. Thebes is not the first, and not even the first in its own group (Ignia launched 13 days earlier).

### 4. Growth tactics

| Channel | Evidence | Confirmed? |
|---|---|---|
| Paid acquisition / traffic swapping (batched buys) | Installs follow a pulse pattern: a week of paid push, then a week off (09-11~18, 10-01~04, 10-16~27, 11-01~04), peaking at +11,328 a day, dropping to near 0 on off days. Zero ratings, zero reviews. Only pushing for chart rank in low-barrier categories. The parent company calls itself an "AI marketing and user acquisition company" | No creatives found directly: Meta and Google ad libraries only track listed products, and searches by package name, Thebes, and Ignia returned nothing (not found does not mean not running). |
| Store category charts / search | Highest on the Korea Photo free chart was #8; ranked #70–150 in Spanish-speaking markets (es/mx/ar). "Beauty Camera" is a high-volume search term, and the name rides that category keyword. | Partly confirmed (chart positions are known, search traffic share is not) |
| Cross-promotion within the group | The same team runs 9 apps across two accounts on a shared template. The desktop itself is likely a placement for funneling users to the group's other apps (inferred). | Not verified |
| Renaming / repositioning | Version 23.0 of 10-31: the title changed from "HD Selfie Home" to "Photo Launcher," and the description now opens with a prominent "THIS APP INCLUDES A HOME LAUNCHER" notice. It looks like a compliance rewrite meant to pass Play review and lower the risk of deceptive-behavior complaints. | Rename confirmed; the motive is inferred. |
| Content / creators / media / X / Reddit | Jina search only surfaced store pages and aggregator sites like AppBrain and apkmate; x-radar shows no relevant discussion in the past 30 days. | Not found |

### 5. Why it works (broken down)

1. **Where the money comes from: the desktop is a permanent ad slot.** Once set as the default Home app, every press of Home and every return to the desktop brings this app to the foreground, which lets it show App Open, interstitial, and native ads. Ordinary users don't know how to switch back to their previous launcher, so uninstall rates are low and daily active users are naturally high. A regular beauty camera might be opened once or twice a week, while the desktop gets opened dozens of times a day. That is the core difference in per-user ad revenue (the mechanism is inferred; the store listing confirms it pushes users to set it as the default Home app and includes ads).

2. **They are their own advertisers.** Thebes/Ignia hold Google MCM partner status and act as AdX sellers, with their own monetization dashboard PubHub. Their ad fill and unit prices are higher than a typical small developer's, and they call themselves a user acquisition company. Acquisition costs and monetization revenue get reconciled inside one company, so as long as the math works, they keep buying.

3. **Templated mass production.** The same "tool + Home" source code is re-skinned into gallery, camera, cleaner, SMS, video downloader, and scanner apps, then published on two developer accounts. This app is a copy of Ignia's identically named app (the listing text matches word for word). Whether any single app runs doesn't matter much: the ones that run (the gallery at 1M+) get more spend, and the ones that don't get shut off.

4. **Low-barrier charts amplify it.** A few thousand installs a day is enough to reach the top 10 of the Korea Photo free chart, and a thousand or two a day reaches the top 100 in Spanish-speaking category charts. Climbing those charts also picks up some organic store traffic.

5. **"Beauty Camera" is just bait.** "Beauty Camera" is one of the highest-volume photography search terms on Play, so using it as the hook converts far better than selling "desktop launcher" directly.

### 6. Differentiation

Compared with a regular beauty camera, the only real difference is that it **bundles a launcher that asks to be set as default** . Compared with other "tool + desktop" apps, there is almost no difference (same name, same template, same listing). That difference is genuinely why it makes money and can keep buying users (the monetization model), but it is not why users choose it. Users are bought, not attracted by features. It runs because of distribution and monetization capacity (an ad company generating traffic), not because of the product.

### 7. How many people have seen it

- No revenue is public (no TrustMRR listing, no founder sharing numbers). No media outlet or major X account has written about this app.

- But this playbook itself is **already crowded** : at least 4–5 accounts publish same-named, same-template gallery and camera desktops, and games, PDF, cleaner, SMS, and remote control each have "X Launcher / X Home" versions, with the top game desktops at tens of millions of installs.

- Bottom line: the app itself is little known, and the tactic is common among people who run paid acquisition on Play.

### 8. What to borrow

- The "high-frequency entry point × low-frequency tool" bundle: attach a low-frequency tool to a system entry point used every day (home screen, lock screen, keyboard, notification shade), and ad revenue per user can be an order of magnitude higher.

- The monetization side generates its own traffic: teams with AdX/MCM status and access to premium ad demand face a lower paid-acquisition ROI bar than ordinary developers, so they can test categories quickly with a template matrix.

- Using low-barrier country charts (Korea Photo, Spanish-speaking markets) as cold-start amplifiers.

- Risks: Play policies prohibit "inducing changes to device settings" and "disruptive ads," so apps like this face a high risk of removal or account bans. The model also has essentially no moat.

### 9. Still unclear

- Channels and creatives: ad libraries did not capture them, so it's unclear whether buys go through Google UAC, Meta, or incentive/swap networks.

- Why 0 has no ratings: no one rates it, or Play hid/cleared the ratings. Not verified. (A sister gallery app has 1,211 ratings at 3.7 stars, so it isn't a group-wide disabling.)

- How ads are actually displayed in the desktop, and whether there is cross-promotion of the group's other apps, has not been verified by installing the app.

- Revenue size and ROI: no data. 10-31 Whether anyone is buying the new AI subscription is unknown.

- The specific equity/roles split between Thebes and Ignia (who develops, who publishes) is unconfirmed beyond the fact that the same people are behind both.
