Forex trading bots for students without a computer: South African Robotrader sells keys through "mentors", 19k installs in three months
What it is An Android app that lets forex students who only have phones run the trading bot their mentor uses on his computer, automatically, using a license key from the mentor.
Why it took off It has been running outside Play for about two years. After it listed on Play at the end of July, existing users switched over in bulk. Since then, every mentor has been pulling students in on TikTok and Facebook, and students have to install it when they sign up.
BHow you could follow Copy this structure in markets like Nigeria, Kenya, India, or Southeast Asia, where retail traders have only phones and mentor culture is strong. Build the product for mentors, earn revenue from a access fee plus wholesale key sales, use APK distribution and mentors' private networks to build users first, and only then move to the store.
- Data (updated daily) · first launch 2026-07-31 · 11-07 installs 19,213
Android · Total installs worldwide Data 2026-10-29 → 2026-11-07 (10 days, 10 observations). Google's detail page only refreshes install counts every other day, so a flat day doesn't mean nobody installed.
An Android app built by an individual developer in South Africa, which lets forex "mentors" move the trading bot from their computers onto students' phones. It only reached Google Play at the end of July, but it isn't a new product: the same app has been running outside Play for about two years, and the listing just moved existing users over. Since then, mentors have kept pulling in students on TikTok and Facebook. What it sells is not a tool but a distribution structure.
2026 Aug 13 two comments
Robotrader Jul 31 launched on Google Play, in South Africa only. Two weeks later, the two oldest reviews on the listing each had 14 people mark them helpful:
"Congrats on finally having a Play Store app. I've been using this app for years and it changed my life." — sedzani malange, 8-13
"Faster than the old version. All my old license keys came back, chart scanning is there, and no ads." — Alondwe Zondi, 8-13
"Used it for years" and "my old keys came back" mean this is a migration, not a cold start. Users had been installing the APK from the website. The creator, Peace TheeCoder (TikTok @theecoder, 7.2K followers), posted "Introducing Robotrader – The First and the best Mobile Forex Robot App" on TikTok back in May 2024 9. The backend domain shows up in web archives as early as December 2023.
This is how Play installs grew (Google Play installs):
| Date | Total installs |
|---|---|
| 8-14 | 212 |
| 8-16 | 1,049 (+837 in two days, existing users switching over) |
| 9-29 | 6,779 |
| 10-13 | 11,802 |
| 10-27 | 16,899 |
| 11-06 | 19,213 (last 7 days, +2,308) |
Mid-October it added 600–700 new installs a day; in November that fell to 250–300 a day. Its best rank was #153 on South Africa's finance free chart. In the store, it was barely visible.
What it actually does
In the forex crowd, an "EA" (Expert Advisor) is an automated trading program that runs on the MT4/MT5 desktop platform. The problem is that the MT4/MT5 mobile apps can't run EAs, and most retail traders in South Africa (and much of Africa), especially those trading Deriv synthetic indices, have only an Android phone. No computer, no VPS.
Robotrader's website goes straight at this in its first line: "Students without a computer can also take part in algorithmic trading on their phone." How it works:
- A mentor runs their EA on Robotrader's servers;
- A student gets a license key from the mentor and opens Robotrader on their phone;
- The app needs "display over other apps" permission, and the phone has to stay on and unlocked for trades to execute.
One line in the website FAQ says a lot: "If you can't connect, it's usually because the mentor has shut down the server, since it's not trading hours." Given these requirements, the likely setup is that the server-side EA generates signals, and Robotrader on the student's phone uses an overlay to place orders in the MT4/MT5 mobile app (inference; I didn't decompile the app to confirm). It also includes AI chart scanning, news-based forecasts, and a chat room where students, mentors, and support all talk.
Technically, none of this is hard. The real thing is in the next section.
Where the money comes from: mentors pay a joining fee, and license keys are sold wholesale to students
Robotrader doesn't sell directly to retail traders. The website is blunt about it: "We don't issue keys to students directly. You get them from the mentor who provides the bot and strategy."
The math works like this (sources: @robotraderapp TikTok video captions, posts in Facebook groups where keys are sold):
| Stage | Pricing |
|---|---|
| Mentor joining | $100 (about R1,900) |
| Platform sells to mentors, per key | $10 |
| Mentor resells to students | Facebook groups list keys at R650 each, about $35 |
The money moves entirely outside Play, so it can't chart on Top Grossing and Google takes no cut. The Facebook page "Robotrader | Sandton" recruits mentors with the line "Sell globally. Manage keys. Earn recurring income." What it sells to mentors is the ability to "sell your bot to students who only have a phone," a bit like a Shopify for forex mentors.
Where users come from: every mentor is recruiting for it
- Existing users migrating. The two reviews above, and +837 over two days in August.
- Mentors' own communities. A mentor left a Play review: "As a mentor I recommend this app. I use it every day, and so do my clients" (The Rangers Fx, 9-18). Several Facebook groups exist specifically to trade keys ("In this group we sell robotrader mobile bot license keys"), and personal profiles offer "comment Robot to get a free key." Mentors recruit students on TikTok, Facebook, and WhatsApp, and students have to install Robotrader to get in.
- Official content, modest scale. @robotraderapp's video on "how to become a mentor" has 32K views (2024-10), and the creator's own Robotrader videos have 58K and 17K views. YouTube has three tutorials: install, mentor onboarding, and hosting.
- Paid ads: none found. That doesn't mean there were none.
Being on Play is growth in itself: students don't have to learn to "allow installs from unknown sources," and the store listing adds a layer of trust.
Who's competing
| Competitors | Scale | How it differs |
|---|---|---|
| MultiBotPro (South Africa) | APK only; a single TikTok with 66K views (10-22) | Same license key + phone bot model, but pitched as a way to build your own bot. Not on Play, and no two-year mentor network. |
| AI Trading Bot - Forex(autotraderbot.ai) | Launched on Play Jul 5, 18.6K installs, +7 over 2,522 days, #151 on South Africa's finance free chart | The EA runs on MT5 in the vendor's cloud, the app is just a remote control, 30-day trial, sold direct. Its curve looks nearly identical to Robotrader's. |
| Forex Trading Mobile Robot | Launched 2023, 220K installs | The developer sold the bot directly and took in-app purchases. It's no longer listed in any country. |
| Individual mentors on TikTok (@poverty.scalper.robot, @tradebotix4, etc.) | Tens of thousands of views per video | One mentor sells one bot. No platform. |
| MT4/MT5 official mobile apps, MQL5 VPS | Very large | One can't run EAs; the other needs setup skills and costs a monthly fee. |
The South African lane is already getting crowded. The same kind of product is run by two or three companies, and AI Trading Bot launched on Play at almost the same time, at a similar scale.
How many people know about it
Very little. X returns almost no posts about it in the last 90 days, no media coverage, and nobody has posted income screenshots. Discussion happens in South African forex mentors' and students' TikTok, Facebook groups, and WhatsApp. Mentor count, keys sold, and platform revenue are all invisible from outside.
If it were you
Verdict: worth a try, but you can't copy the two years of mentor network it built. You'd have to build your own in another country. The tech is the easiest part. The hard part is finding the first mentors who already have students.
Who it suits: people who know Android automation and MT4/MT5 well, or who already know forex and synthetic-index mentor circles in Nigeria, Kenya, India, Southeast Asia, or Latin America.
Who it doesn't suit: anyone who wants store search to drive installs (its traffic doesn't come from the store); anyone uneasy about "bots that trade for you," a gray-area finance business; anyone who only wants to build one more app in South Africa, where three or four already exist.
How to do it:
- Pick a market where "retail traders only have phones and mentor culture is strong." Ship the APK first, and don't rush to the store.
- The product is for mentors, not retail traders: EA hosting, key generation and management, student verification codes, and a chat room where a mentor can bring students in.
- Pricing should follow the same structure: a mentor joining fee plus wholesale keys, letting mentors set retail prices and keep the margin.
- Wait until you have a few thousand students and a stable mentor network before going to Play. Existing users switching over is your cold start.
How to get users: don't go after retail traders, go after mentors. Search TikTok, Facebook, and Telegram for local mentors who talk about "EA / robot / mobile bot." Waive the joining fee for the first few and give them keys so they recruit their own students.
When to move: the earlier the better. South Africa is already contested, and cloud-based options like AI Trading Bot are expanding abroad too. By the time other markets have two or three players, the mentors will already be taken.
What would mean you got it wrong: Google Play removes this kind of app in bulk under its finance or automation policies (a similar Forex Trading Mobile Robot is already delisted in every country); or students lose money en masse, mentor-circle reputation turns, and the install curves of the South African players drop over the next month or two.

Why Robotrader (com.theecoder.robotrader) took off
In one line: This isn't a cold-start new product. It's a South African "mobile forex robot" APK ecosystem that's been running for about two years (a mentor → student license-key distribution network), moved onto Google Play in 2026-07-31. On Play it has 3 months and 19k installs, mostly from migrating existing users, plus mentors constantly pulling in new students on TikTok and Facebook.
1. What it is
- Android app, developer account eragateway. The author is an individual developer from South Africa (from the content, around Venda / Limpopo) named Peace TheeCoder (TikTok @theecoder, 7.2K followers). Official site robotrader-bot.com, backend take-profit-signals.co.za.
- How it works: forex "mentors" host the PC MT4/MT5 EAs (automated trading bots) on Robotrader servers. Students use the license key from their mentor to open Robotrader on their phone. The app requires the "draw over other apps" permission, and the phone must stay on and unlocked. The FAQ says "if it won't connect, the mentor has probably shut the server down, outside trading hours." The inferred mechanism (from the official FAQ, not verified against the APK): the mentor's server runs the EA and generates signals, and the student's phone uses the overlay to automatically tap orders in the MT4/MT5 mobile app. The native MT4/MT5 mobile app can't run EAs; that's exactly the problem it solves.
- Also includes RoboAI (AI chart scanning, news prediction) and RoboChat (internal chat for students, mentors, and support). Source: robotrader-bot.com/
- The money is made outside Play: mentors pay $100 to join (R1900 rand in South Africa), keys are wholesaled at $10 each, and mentors resell to students (Facebook group listings at R650 per key, about $35). | 2026-11-06 | 19,213 (7 days +2,308) | Google Play library app_profile |
- Listed in only 1 country (South Africa); best rank was #153 in South Africa Finance (free). 134 reviews on the Play listing (2026-11-06 scraped via Jina).
- Mid-October daily installs 600–700, falling back to 250–300 per day in November.
3. Why it took off
- Migration of existing users, not a cold start. Top August reviews: "congratulations on finally having a play store app. I have been using this app for years" (sedzani malange, 8-13,14 people found it helpful); "the app is faster than the old one, all my old license keys came back" (Alondwe Zondi, 8-13). Two days +837 in the second week after listing is when old users switched over. Timeline: the backend take-profit-signals.co.za first appears on Wayback at 2023-12; robotrader-bot.com at 2024-09; the author 2024-05-09 posted "Introducing Robotrader – The First and the best Mobile Forex Robot App" on TikTok; the Facebook page (Sandton) was created about 2024 years ago. Before this it was only downloaded as an APK from the website.
- Mentors act as the sales channel (B2B2C). The platform doesn't pull in retail users itself; it relies on mentors. Mentors pay $100 to join, then buy keys wholesale from the platform and sell them to their own students. Every mentor recruits students on TikTok, Facebook and WhatsApp, and students have to install the app as soon as they come in. Evidence: a mentor review on Play (The Rangers Fx, 9-18: "As a mentor i recommend this app… same applies to my clients"); several Facebook groups where people ask for and sell keys ("In this group we sell robotrader mobile robot license keys"); a personal-profile post reading "Comment \"Robot\" to get a Free License key".
- Hits the "want to run EAs without a computer" need. Most retail forex and Deriv synthetic-index traders in South Africa (and across Africa) only have Android phones. They can't afford a PC or set up a VPS, and the native MT4/MT5 mobile apps can't run EAs. The site's first line: "Students who do not own PCs can still join algorithmic trading using their mobile phones." Deriv ranks in the top 100 of South Africa Finance (free) on Google Play (googleplay library, 818k installs), showing this user base is large.
- Being on Play is itself a growth lever. Students no longer have to be taught to "allow installs from unknown sources," and the store adds trust. Reviews say "the app has no ads" and that it's faster than the old version.

| Forex VPS / cloud hosting (MQL5 VPS, etc.) | Other | — | Big | Requires setup and a monthly fee. Robotrader uses the student's own phone as the "VPS." |
6. Differentiation
- The core difference is business structure, not technology. It positions itself as "Shopify for mentors": mentors have bots and students, but students have no PCs. What Robotrader sells to mentors is the ability to "sell your EA to students who only have phones," plus key management, internal chat, and a store page (robotrader-bot.com/store). Every mentor recruits for it, and that's why it took off.
- Technically it simulates taps on MT4/MT5 via the overlay, and the phone has to stay on. That's not a moat; tools like MultiBotPro can already do the same. The real moat is the mentor network and legacy key system built over two years. "The old keys all came back" at the Play launch.
- Only 1 bot visible in the store listing right now (EndPoverty Prime, free), suggesting real trading happens in mentors' private channels, not on the platform.
7. How many people have seen it
- Searching "robotrader" on X returned no results in the last 90 days (x-radar); no media coverage, TrustMRR listing, or founder revenue posts found.
- Discussion is limited to South African forex TikTok, Facebook groups, and WhatsApp circles. Conclusion: outside those circles few people know about it; inside the South African forex mentor community, everyone does.
- Similar "license key + mobile EA" platforms (MultiBotPro, etc.) have already appeared in South Africa, so the local market isn't empty.
8. What others can borrow
- Find "KOL sellers with existing private communities" and give them distribution and licensing tools so they bring in C-end users for you. The platform takes an entry fee and key wholesale margins. Revenue sits outside Play, unaffected by the 30% store commission, and never reaches the Top Grossing chart.
- Set up a network first with an APK and private community, then go to the store. The moment you list, your existing users migrate in a wave, which is a cold start in itself (+837 in a week).
- Target the device gap: users in emerging markets who only have a phone, for whom the things you'd normally do on a PC (EAs, editing, quant trading) are out of reach. The same playbook can be copied to markets like Nigeria, Kenya, India and Southeast Asia, where it's "mentor + mobile EA."
9. Risks and uncertainties
- Auto-tapping other apps with a floating window, and "robot signals" for forex and synthetic indices, carry delisting risk under Google Play's finance and automation policies. Similar apps like com.forex.robot_mobile are no longer listed in any country.
- Mentors selling bots like "EndPoverty" have a strong whiff of exploiting students, and if students lose money the reputation could backfire.
- Unverified: the mentors' head count, the actual sales of the key and platform revenue; historical user numbers for the old APK; whether the app really uses accessibility / floating-window tapping (based on the permissions described on the official site); whether there's any paid advertising.
