# A former Navy SEAL's $14.99 privacy app: everyone has the features, only he has the big account

**What it is** A phone privacy app: VPN, blocking trackers and ads, paid burner numbers, $14.99/month, co-founded by podcaster and former Navy SEAL Shawn Ryan.

**Why it took off** Ryan is a co-founder and has pushed it for free on his show for a long time; his upload hit 1.28M views. His audience (US conservatives, veterans) buys a story of "intel-community background, all-American," so they pay a high price without comparing and are willing to.

**C** **How you could follow** Don't copy features, copy the playbook: find a host with a loyal niche audience and no product of their own, make them a co-founder, package an off-the-shelf tool as "made by one of us," and fill the gaps Glacier left: burner numbers that receive SMS and a free trial.

C grade: the product has no moat, and the category is crowded with cheap, mature big players. It took off on the founder's own big account, which followers can't get; what you can learn is the playbook, not an empty spot. Publicly known / widely discussed

Glacier is a phone privacy app: VPN, blocking trackers and ads, plus paid burner numbers, $14.99/month, with no free trial. The features are standard for the category, and some say its DNS is NextDNS. It squeezed into the top 50 of the US Communication top grossing chart on Android with only 20k installs, because co-founder Shawn Ryan, a former Navy SEAL, has 6.67M YouTube subscribers. Below I explain how it got going, where the money comes from, and why most people can't copy it.

### A 1.28M-view "I can finally talk about this"

On Jul 24 2026, The Shawn Ryan Show's YouTube channel posted a video titled "I can finally talk about this...". The description's first line said "Glacier is officially here," followed by four points: secure DNS, data blocking, "VPN for the whole US," and burner numbers. Below that was an eight-step tutorial: open theglacierapp.com on an iPhone, sign up, get the email verification code, pick a plan, pay, tap the link on your profile page to go to the App Store, and log in with the same account.

By Nov 6, the video had 1.28M views, 50k likes and 3,813 comments (YouTube, 11-06). Two days later, Ryan posted on X that Glacier had reached #10 in the App Store's free productivity chart, "just behind ChatGPT," and asked fans to leave reviews. In Jul 28 he said on Facebook it was already #6.

The groundwork had been laid for a long time. In October 2025, the same channel posted a short "The Consumer Version of a CIA-Level Black Phone" (410k views) and started collecting a waitlist. Two or three years earlier, the show kept talking about "black phones" and phone hacking. By launch, demand had already been cultivated by his own show.

### What it actually sells

At the app level, Glacier does roughly what NordVPN's Threat Protection, Proton's NetShield and NextDNS do: a VPN that blocks trackers and ads at the DNS layer, risk alerts, and an optional burner number for an extra $4.99/month. Pricing on Play is $14.99/month or $159.99/year (11-06); the official site's plan with a burner number starts at $19.98/month.

One independent security reviewer wrote on Substack that it costs more than twice as much as comparable products and does less. App Store reviews were also specific:

> "No demo before paying. You have to subscribe to see what you're buying. From the description it's just a basic VPN; if you want DNS protection, the free OpenDNS does that." (App Store US, 8-10, one star)

> "The burner number can only make calls, not receive texts, yet nearly every company sends verification codes by SMS now." (App Store US, 8-06, one star)

But the five-star reviews said something else:

> "Just cancelled Nord; I'd rather pay this 20 bucks a month... best of all, it's an American company." (App Store US, 7-24, four stars)

> "Finally, an American-made security app." (App Store US, 7-20, five stars)

So what it sells isn't features, it's trust: the CTO is a former NSA engineer, the parent company Glacier Security has spent 11 years on government and enterprise security work (it sold a security phone at about $8,500 a unit), and Ryan named foreign VPNs as targets in his launch video. This pitch is aimed at his audience: US conservatives, veterans, people worried about surveillance by the government and big tech. They pay because of "who made it," not for price comparison, and they don't ask for a trial.

### Where users came from: almost entirely his own show

| Channel | What happened |
|---|---|
| His show and short videos | 7-24 videos uploaded, 1.28M views; 9-18 Shorts such as "What Actually Stops Your Phone From Tracking You?" at 1.34M; August and October each had a few with hundreds of thousands. The podcast description has a fixed "Download Glacier" line, so every episode carries a host read |
| Founder's social accounts | The "#10" post on X, 328k views; mirrored on Facebook and Instagram |
| Plugs from big accounts in the same circle | In late October, Candace Owens read the Glacier ad on her show. |
| Paid press releases and TV | 8-06 EIN Presswire and 10-02 USA Today press release channels; 9-11 NewsNation covered it, and a Play review with 91 "helpful" votes says "I saw it on NewsNation." |
| Controversy | After 10-19, Ryan fell out with journalist Leah Files, who questioned Glacier's transparency and data handling; several channels, including Jimmy Dore, made videos on it (Jimmy Dore's had 330k views). |
| Paid acquisition | No evidence found of Meta ads (not finding it doesn't mean they didn't run). |

The key is that Ryan is a co-founder, not a paid endorser. He can keep pushing it on his own show indefinitely, without ad spend, and without splitting proceeds with anyone.

The Android version only launched in Sep 4, and the growth curve tells the story: late September added 100 to 700 a day; Oct 2 to 4 (the USA Today press release days) about 1,000 a day; Oct 20 to 23 (the Leah Files interview, the Candace Owens plug, the controversy) 1,000 to 1,460 a day; November fell back to tens to 300 a day (Google Play installs, estimated by day). Nov 6 cumulative over 21,875,7 days added 1,893. **It was pushed up by one event after another, not grown organically.**

### Where the money comes from

On Android it ranked #33 on the US Communication top grossing chart in Oct 29, then dropped to #45 in Nov 6 (Google Play, 11-06). A little over 20k installs can reach that rank because of the high price per user; going by that rank, Android monthly revenue is roughly tens of thousands of dollars (estimate).

iOS is the bulk: it launched in Jul 13; the US store shows 325 ratings averaging 4.2 stars, and it reached #85 on the Productivity top grossing chart 11-06. But the launch video told viewers to pay on the official site first and then download from the store, so much of the money never goes through Apple's in-app purchase. That means the grossing chart understates real revenue, and by how much is not visible from outside.

Two other signals are less encouraging: the Android grossing rank is trending down, and reviews keep mentioning "cancelling is a hassle," "no trial," and "stopped working after two weeks." A $14.99 subscription with no free trial may be its biggest retention problem (inference).

### Who it's competing with

The category is already crowded: NordVPN, Surfshark and Proton VPN all include blocking, at about a third of the price; NextDNS and AdGuard are technically nearly identical, but you have to configure them yourself; DuckDuckGo's app tracker blocking is free; Hushed and Burner focus on burner numbers at about $5/month; Cloaked does virtual numbers, email and data removal; iOS and Android themselves offer private relay and private DNS.

I also didn't find a product that clearly copies Glacier. The reason is simple: what's copyable is Shawn Ryan, not the code.

### If it were you

**C: you can learn something, but following isn't worth it.** What you're seeing here is a playbook, not an empty spot: the tech is off the shelf, a person with a big account pushes it long-term as a co-founder, a trust story fitted to the audience's identity, and a high price. Copying the features is pointless; what you can't copy is the 6.67M subscribers.

**Who it suits** : you or your partner have a niche big account, the audience buys a certain identity (veterans, law enforcement, faith, a country or a profession), and you're willing to give up equity and push it on the show for the long haul. If you find someone like that and pick an off-the-shelf tool (privacy, home security, finance, health), packaging it as "made by one of us" is this playbook.

**Who it doesn't suit** : independent developers with no audience who want to compete with VPN and privacy tools on features and price. The category's big players are cheap and mature, and ad slots are expensive. It's also not for anyone who wants to "build a cheaper Glacier"; its users don't compare prices in the first place.

**How to do it** : find the person first, then build the product. Find a host with a loyal audience and no product of their own, and negotiate a co-founder deal with a revenue split. Assemble the product from off-the-shelf parts: VPN plus DNS filtering can run on a service like NextDNS, and burner numbers can connect via an API like Twilio. Fix the two holes Glacier left: burner numbers that receive verification codes, and a 7-day free trial with one-click cancellation.

**How to get users** : follow Glacier's rhythm. For six months before launch, keep hammering the pain point on the show and open a waitlist; on launch day, a long video with step-by-step instructions, pointing people to pay on the official site to avoid the store's cut; in the first week, mass-request reviews and push for the category chart; after that, a plug in every episode, plus buying plugs from big accounts in the same circle to keep it going.

**When to move** : there's no obvious deadline. This playbook depends on whether you can find the right person, not on timing. If you want to ride the "AI tracking, data brokers" wave, move while it's still hot in the first half of 2027.

**What would show you misread it** : (1) if Glacier's Android daily installs keep returning to 1,000+ with no new event, and it gets back into the US Communication top grossing top 30, it has found an acquisition channel beyond the show, and it's no longer just a celebrity business and is worth a second look; (2) conversely, if its grossing rank falls out of the top 100 in early 2027, it shows that one big account can't hold up a high-priced subscription with no trial, and this playbook's ceiling is lower than it looks.

## Why the Glacier App (com.theglacierapp.glacier) took off

**In one line** : a privacy app for phones with a $14.99/month plan that bundles "VPN + DNS blocking + tracker/ad blocking + paid burner numbers." The product itself is a common combination, but **its growth comes almost entirely from co-founder Shawn Ryan** : former Navy SEAL, CIA contractor, host of The Shawn Ryan Show, with 6.67M YouTube subscribers. He keeps pushing the app on his show as if it were his own product, with a plug in every episode.

### 1. Basic data

| Metric | Value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Listed on Android | 2026-09-04 (store date); the library already shows about 2,144 installs 9-18 | Data card; googleplay.app_day_ext |
| Android installs | 21,875 (11-06), 7 day +1,893 | Data card |
| Android rating | 4.0 stars, 59 reviews | Play listing page (2026-11-06) |
| Android US Communication Top Grossing chart | 10-29 rank 33 → 11-06 rank 45, still sliding | googleplay.chart_rank |
| Top Grossing charts in 12 other countries | Ranks 85–91, likely a linked overall-chart effect; don't take it at face value | Data card |
| iOS(id6776005049) | Listed on 2026-07-13; 325 ratings in the US store, 4.2 stars; currently #85 on Productivity Top Grossing; within a week of launch it hit #10 and #6 on the Productivity Top Free chart | appstore library; iTunes lookup; Shawn Ryan's posts on X / Facebook |
| Pricing | $14.99/month or $159.99/year; burner numbers 1 +$4.99/month (the website's bundle starts at $19.98/month) | Play listing page; theglacierapp.com |

Android daily new installs (historical data backfilled by AppstoreSpy, googleplay.app_day_ext): late September 100–700 per day; 10-02~04 about 1,000 per day (the USA Today press release went out 10-02); 10-20~23 1,000–1,460 per day (10-19 the Leah Files interview, Candace Owens' shout-out, and the controversy that followed); November fell back to a few dozen to 300 per day. **Overall it was pushed up by waves of events, not organic growth.**

Estimated revenue scale (unverified): Android US Communication Top Grossing ranks 30–45 correspond to monthly revenue on the order of tens of thousands of dollars. iOS is the bigger part: people pay on the website first and then download from the App Store, so much of the money never goes through Apple's in-app purchase, and chart rank understates real revenue.

### 2. Where users came from (growth tactics)

1. **Founder's own podcast / YouTube (confirmed, the main driver)**
    - 2025-10-16 The Shawn Ryan Show posted the Short "The Consumer Version of a CIA-Level Black Phone" (410k views) and started collecting a waitlist (theglacierapp.com/waitlist); the press release says "thousands" signed up. Over the preceding 2023–2025 years, the show repeatedly discussed "black phones" and phone hacking, laying the groundwork for demand.
    - 2026-07-24 posted the launch video "I can finally talk about this...": **1.28M views, 50k likes, 3,813 comments** (YouTube Data API, 11-06). The video description walked people through it step by step: pay on the website first, then download from the App Store.
    - Short-form follow-ups kept coming: 8-01 "This App Stops Your Phone From Spying on You" 170k; 8-06 160k; 9-18 "What Actually Stops Your Phone From Tracking You?" **1.34M** ; 10-12 130k.
    - The Spotify / Apple Podcasts descriptions for the show permanently say "Download Glacier," meaning **every episode has a plug** . The channel has 3.3B total views and 6.67M subscribers.

2. **The founder's social accounts** : 7-26 posted on X "Ranked #10 in Productivity, right behind ChatGPT" (328k views, 6K likes), **and directly asked followers to leave App Store reviews** ; 7-28 posted on Facebook "#6". There are also Instagram Reels.

3. **Bought shout-outs from big accounts in the same circle (confirmed)** : in late October Candace Owens read a Glacier ad on her show (Leah Files' post on X, an r/BaronColeman thread, X's trending page).

4. **Paid press releases / media** : 8-06 EIN Presswire; 10-02 the USA Today press release channel (paid PR, also reposted by coinprwire); 9-11 NewsNation (Elizabeth Vargas' show) covered it. One Play review that 91 people marked helpful reads "I saw it on NewsNation."

5. **The controversy itself drove traffic** : 10-19 Shawn Ryan and Leah Files had a falling-out over an interview. Afterwards Leah Files published an article questioning Glacier's transparency and data handling (Twilio use, ties to the intelligence world, etc.); Jimmy Dore (330K views), Heavy Duty Country (80K) and Chris On Point (58K) all followed with videos. The Android peak at 10-20~23 lines up with this timing, though it may also have come mainly from Candace's on-air commentary (unverified).

6. **Meta ads** : Glacier does not appear as an advertiser in our metaads library (this library only tracks part of the advertiser list, so not finding it doesn't mean they didn't advertise). **No evidence of paid acquisition was found.**

### 3. Competitors

| Competitors | Platform | Launched | Scale | How Glacier is different |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| NordVPN(Threat Protection)/ Surfshark(CleanWeb) | iOS/Android/desktop | 2012 / 2018 | Tens of millions of users | Big brands also offer ad and tracker blocking, at around 1/3 for the price; Glacier sells on being "all-American, with intelligence-community roots, not a foreign company" (Ryan named and criticized foreign VPNs in the launch video) |
| Proton VPN(NetShield) | All platforms | 2017 | 10M+ on Play | Has a free tier, is open source, and is audited; Reddit discussions consider Proton's privacy record more solid |
| NextDNS / AdGuard | Cross-platform / DNS service | 2019 / 2009 | Million-level | Technically almost identical (a Redditor pointed out Glacier's DNS endpoint is NextDNS); much cheaper, but you have to configure it yourself |
| DuckDuckGo App Tracking Protection | Android | 2022 | Bundled with the DDG browser, 100M+ | Free, blocks app tracking; Glacier adds VPN, burner numbers and a "security advisor" style packaging |
| Lockdown Privacy / Guardian Firewall | iOS | 2019 | Niche | Similar "firewall + VPN," open source and cheap, with no celebrity endorsement |
| Cloaked | iOS/web | 2023 | Medium, has funding | Virtual numbers, email, data removal; Glacier bundles VPN and burner numbers together |
| Hushed / Burner | iOS/Android | 2013 / 2012 | Millions of downloads | Focused on burner numbers at about $5/month; Glacier treats burner numbers as an add-on |
| iCloud Private Relay / Android Private DNS | Built into the system | 2021 / 2018 | System level | Free, but normal people won't set it up |
| Glacier Security's own Guardian by Glacier, a secure phone at about $8,500 | Enterprise | From ¥2015 | Government and enterprise clients | The consumer version is an enterprise product scaled down and sold as a subscription |

**Verdict** : this category is crowded, with no technical moat. A Practive Security Substack review put it bluntly: "the price is more than 2 times the competitors', with fewer features."

### 4. Why it took off

- **Distribution** : Shawn Ryan has 6.67M subscribers, an audience of American conservatives, veterans, and people worried about government and big-tech surveillance, who naturally respond to "privacy" and "CIA-level." He isn't taking ad money; as **a co-founder** , he can plug it on his show indefinitely, without paying or sharing a cut. A single launch video hit 1.28M views.

- **Timing** : 2026 was a hot year for US debate on AI tracking and data brokers (NewsNation's headline was literally "Block AI from tracking your phone").

- **Trust packaging** : a former NSA engineer (CTO Alex White), a company founded 11 years ago (Glacier Security), and "an all-American VPN." This narrative targets Ryan's audience, not technical users.

- **Pricing** : $14.99/month, no free trial. The audience buys on trust and doesn't compare prices, so ARPU is high and chart rank and install counts are out of proportion. iOS payments go through the website first, sidestepping Apple's 30%.

- **Chart push** : in the first week after launch Ryan posted asking followers for reviews, and iOS climbed to #6 in Productivity.

### 5. Differentiation

The product itself has no differentiation: VPN and DNS blocking are standard, and the DNS is reportedly NextDNS's. What is actually different is **"a celebrity founder + intelligence-community trust packaging + an all-American narrative"** , plus bundling burner numbers and VPN into a zero-config experience for ordinary people. **It took off because of that packaging and distribution, not the features.**

### 6. How many people know it / has anyone copied it

- **Awareness** : revenue hasn't been disclosed, but it has been widely discussed: the USA Today press release, NewsNation coverage, trending on X, Jimmy Dore's show, and several YouTube controversy videos. It can be counted as "widely discussed" (mainly within American conservative podcast circles).

- **Copycats** : no clear copycat products found. The real barrier is "do you have your own big account"; copying the features doesn't copy that.

### 7. What to borrow

- Someone with a big account, as a co-founder, long-term promotes a technically off-the-shelf tool app as "our own product": near-zero acquisition cost, and they can charge a premium.

- The narrative has to fit the audience's identity (veterans, intelligence circles, American-rooted), not compete on specs.

- Pay on the website first, then download, to skip the store cut; front-load the first week with fans leaving reviews and pushing the category charts.

- Risk: a celebrity endorsement can cut both ways. October's Leah Files controversy directly questioned it on "transparency and its ties to the surveillance industry", which for a privacy product is fatal.

### 8. Still unclear

- Real revenue and paying users (on iOS many payments go through the website, so store data understates them).

- Whether the late-October wave of Android installs came mainly from Candace's on-camera mention or from the controversy itself.

- Whether they bought paid acquisition on Meta / Google (not found in our database).

- Retention: no trial, cancellation is a hassle (early Play reviews complain about it), churn is probably high; the Android Top Grossing ranking is also still sliding.
