Toonhub: Premium Comics · Luxe or car

A comics app labeled Teen that, once opened, turns into weekly-billed adult webtoons: how Toonhub squeezed into the top 3 of the English four-country comics charts

What it is A reskinned Android comics app: in the store it looks like a plain reader, but users who arrive via paid acquisition get sent to an adult-oriented webtoon site that bills their credit card weekly.

Why it took off Paid acquisition in waves, plus a thin English-language comics free chart, meant a daily intake of one or two thousand new installs was enough to reach the top 3; the money comes back from weekly credit-card subscriptions on the web, without paying Google a cut, which funds the ad spend.

EHow you could follow it Don't copy the product. Two compliant lessons are worth taking: the English comics chart is thin, so a legitimate new app can chart with modest paid acquisition; and web webtoon sites lack an Android entry point, which you can address compliantly with user-choice billing or TWA.

E grade: every key step depends on violations: a reskin to get past review, adult content labeled Teen, charging cards outside the store with hard-to-cancel subscriptions that draw user complaints, plus a batch of borrowed developer accounts that can be burned at any time. The same group had already set up three or four packages within a month, and a small team following suit will only get banned. Still largely unknown

Toonhub: Premium Comics was listed on Google Play on Sep 10, and by Nov 6 had 36.5k installs, while also ranking #2 on the free comics charts in Australia and Canada and #3 in the US and UK. It is not a well-made comics app but a "reskin": the version reviewers see is a reader with a few small built-in stories, while the version paid-acquisition users see is a web page full of adult webtoons billed weekly to credit cards. Below, we explain how it runs, where the money comes from, and why this is something to avoid.

One 1-star review tells the whole story

On the evening of Oct 18, a UK user gave it 1 stars on Google Play: "the material is explicitly pornographic … it's misleading to call it just comics, giving it a teen rating and no warnings." The same day another, one-line review read: "Bro it's a p*rn."

Going further back, someone wrote on Sep 21: "my credit card can't be removed at any time. and it doesn't give me an option to delete my subscription." Yet the store page says "no in-app purchases."

An app that sells no in-app purchases, yet users complain they can't cancel subscriptions or remove their card: that's the clue. The payment happens somewhere outside Google Play.

What it actually is

On the store page it looks like a straightforward comics reader: "premium comics, webtoon-style stories, romance chapters, manhwa-inspired episodes," rated Teen (violence). The update notes say "2 new stories, each with 4 endings."

Unpacking the 2.0 build reveals two separate things:

  • One is a local reader with a few "multi-ending interactive stories," with copy like "Unlock 12 endings" and "New ending unlocked." This is what a reviewer sees after installing.
  • The other is a hidden web container plus AppsFlyer, an ad attribution tool. When the app opens, it asks a domain called toonhbstatistics.com whether this user arrived via organic search or an ad click. If it was an ad click, it loads a web page. Visiting that domain directly in a browser returns only "Hello World!"

The reviews line up: "they'll let you read one or two Comics … you got to buy a VIP right away" (10-09), "You only can see 1 Ep then … you must pay a fee" (10-20). Another six or seven 1-star reviews only say "won't open" or "can't get to the homepage," which we infer are users who were never routed to the web side.

Which site the web version ultimately lands on has not been verified.

What is its relationship to the name "Toonhub"?

The real Toonhub is toon-hub.com, operated by TOONHUB TECH LTD in Cyprus (registered in March 2025). It sells web subscriptions: the first 3 chapters are free, then it auto-renews every 1 / 4 / 12 / 24 weeks, takes credit cards and PayPal, and cancellation requires emailing. It has a TikTok account, @toonhubcomics, with 113k followers (11-06). Its own FAQ says: "Do you have a mobile app? Not yet."

Meanwhile the Play app's developer is "Luxe or car," whose Polish-language description reads "global vehicle and machinery trade"; the official site toonhub.world and the callback domain were both registered on Sep 10, the day the app was listed. Two possibilities: Toonhub or its ad agency borrowed an account to run an Android entry point, or a third party is riding the name to drive traffic to its own site. The official line is "no app yet," so the second is more likely (inferred, not verified).

Other players in the same circle include HoneyToon, Toon Space, and Toonbee, all web webtoon sites that bill cards weekly (HoneyToon states "only 7.99 per week").

Source: Google Play installs, early figures estimated by AppstoreSpy.

The curve moves in steps: on 11-03 it added +4,015, then the next day 0; 11-05 and 11-06 each added about two thousand. Several days in between barely moved. This shape looks more like waves of paid ads than word of mouth spreading slowly (inferred).

36.5k installs, only 46 ratings, 0.13%. The distribution is lopsided: 1-star 21, 5-star 21, 2 to 4 stars add up to 2. The 5-star reviews are long, similar-sounding English praise ("Toonhub is a great app for comic lovers! It offers an enjoyable way to explore premium comics, webtoons…"), with a Bengali "khub bhalo akti app" (a really good app) in between. The 1-star reviews are the real complaints.

Where users come from

Paid acquisition, most likely the main channel (inferred). AppsFlyer is installed and the code splits Organic and Non-organic, and the install curve jumps in batches. We didn't find which platform it runs on.

The comics chart is thin, so a small push gets you high. The top of the free comics chart in the four English-speaking countries is empty: #11-06 in the US is WEBTOON, #1 is another name-squatting app, MangaNest, and #2 is this one, #3. A thousand or two new installs a day is enough to reach the top 3. Once charted, you get a bit more organic exposure.

Template reviews fill the 5-star end and keep the average around 3.

Name squatting. People see Toonhub ads on TikTok, then search the Play Store, and the result is this app or another ToonHub package from the same group. How much this contributes can't be estimated.

Where the money comes from

No Google billing. Users enter a credit card on the web to buy a weekly subscription, and similar sites charge around $7.99 a week. There are two benefits: no cut to Google, and adult content avoids Play's review. Weekly subscriptions pay back quickly and can fund paid acquisition, which is what makes the whole playbook work. Real conversion rate and revenue are not public.

Who's competing, who's copying

Licensed webtoon platforms are on a different scale and all use Google billing: WEBTOON 194M installs, WebComics 16.8M, Lezhin 13M, Tapas 11.4M, Toomics 7.17M (Google Play, 11-06).

The closest matches are its own "siblings." Same template, same privacy policy (the AppsFlyer and OneSignal sections are word-for-word identical), and relisted under a different Polish developer account:

Package names are deliberately garbled: toontubee, honeyytoon, toonhuuub, comicssjafe. This app's package shares a root with the removed ToonTube, so it looks like one account was taken down and the app was relaunched under a new name.

If it were you

E: stay away. The business may make money, but every key part is something you can't take and shouldn't: review-evading wrappers, adult content labeled Teen, credit-card subscriptions that bypass the store, and a pile of borrowed developer accounts that can be burned at any time.

Who it suits: nobody should follow it. The only ones who can do this are operators with batches of developer accounts, adult-content sites, and a team that buys ads. They're already doing it, putting out three or four packages a month.

Who it doesn't suit: indie developers and small teams. Wrappers are a direct ban offense on Google Play. If you're caught, every app on your account comes down. And when users complain they can't cancel subscriptions, the problem goes beyond platform rules.

What you can take: two legitimate things. First, the English-speaking free comics chart is thin, so 30k extra installs can get you into the top 3. New titles doing real webtoons, light novels, or interactive stories can get chart exposure for a small paid-acquisition budget. Second, the need for "an Android entry point for a web subscription site" is real. toon-hub.com itself says it has no app yet. The legitimate route is Google Play's user choice billing, or publishing the web app as a TWA. Offer that as outsourcing or partnership work to webtoon and short-drama companies already selling web subscriptions.

How to acquire users (if you're building a legitimate webtoon or interactive story app): watch the free comics charts in the US, UK, Canada, and Australia. Use a small budget to push daily installs to a thousand or two and see if you can break into the top 5. The biggest complaint in this category is reviews saying "you have to pay after one episode," so giving more free episodes up front is a selling point (inferred).

Timing: for wrapper packages like this, there is no "launch before" window. How long the window stays open depends on when Google cleans up.

What would show you misread it: (1) If this batch is still charting and growing three months from now, the platform is actually tolerating the approach, and the risk was overestimated. (2) If someone builds a webtoon site's Android entry point with legitimate user choice billing and also reaches the top 5 of the English comics chart, then there's a real opportunity in "the part it does badly," and the grade should go up. (3) Conversely, if it and its sibling packages are all taken down within a few weeks, even the window to learn from it has closed.

Why Toonhub: Premium Comics (com.toontubee.animess.comicssjafe) works

Research date 2026-11-06. Sources: our googleplay database (app_snap / app_day_ext / chart_rank / review), Jina web scraping and search, TikHub, RDAP domain registration data, and static string analysis of the 2.0 XAPK downloaded from FileHippo.

Bottom line

It isn't a comics app that won on its product. It's a wrapper (cloak) package. The store page and the review process see a Teen-rated reader that ships with a few "multi-ending interactive stories." It has AppsFlyer installed and splits installs into "organic / paid" by attribution. Users from paid acquisition are sent by a remotely configured WebView to an adult / premium webtoon site billed weekly by credit card. Installs climbed in waves, and the low barrier of the comics category pushed it into the top 3 of the US, UK, Canada, and Australia free comics charts. Money flows through web credit-card subscriptions (not Google Play billing), and the store listing says "no in-app purchases."

2. What the unpacking showed (version 2.0)

From the classes.dex strings in the XAPK downloaded from FileHippo (com.toontubee.animess.comicssjafe_2.0.xapk):

  • Two interfaces: SplashActivity / MainActivity / DetailActivity / ReaderActivity form a local story reader. The copy includes "Unlock 12 endings," "New ending unlocked," "Finish every ending in 3 stories," and several novel-length text bodies, matching the store update note "2 new stories … 4 endings each." A separate BoboActivity carries a full WebView setup: setupWebView, WebView loadUrl:, WebView link from intent:, and WebView link is empty, nothing loaded.
  • Attribution split: the AppsFlyer SDK is in use (af_status, Organic, Non-organic, media_source, campaign, af_deep_link), along with the Play Install Referrer and Xiaomi's referrer. The only business domain is https://toonhbstatistics.com. Visiting it directly in a browser returns only "Hello World!" (hosted on Cloudflare, registered 2026-09-10), consistent with a wrapper callback service that returns a landing-page address only when attribution parameters are present.
  • No Google billing: The store shows no in-app purchases, but reviews say "my credit card can't be removed … doesn't give me an option to delete my subscription" (09-21), "they'll let you read one or two Comics … buy a VIP right away" (10-09), and "You only can see 1 Ep … you must pay a fee" (10-20). That means the paywall sits in a WebView and users pay by credit card.
  • The actual content is adult: "Bro it's a p*rn" (10-18), "the material is explicitly pornographic … giving it a teen rating and no warnings" (10-18), "adult app!sick" (10-20). That doesn't match the Teen rating on the store page or the local story the reviewers could see.
  • The privacy policy (sites.google.com) says it uses AppsFlyer to "measure the effectiveness of marketing campaigns", plus OneSignal push and Firebase.

Verdict: this is the standard play of "wrapper passes review → WebView serves by attribution → web subscription takes payment." Where the WebView finally lands was not verified (we did not forge attribution requests to check).

3. How it relates to the "Toonhub" brand

  • The real Toonhub is toon-hub.com: TOONHUB TECH LTD, Limassol, Cyprus (company no. HE 473168,2025-03-28; domain registered 2024-11). It sells web subscriptions: the first 3 chapters are free, then it auto-renews every 1 / 4 / 12 / 24 weeks, taking credit cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay and PayPal, with cancellation by email (toon-hub.com FAQ, Payment and Refund Policy). Its FAQ says "Do you have a mobile app? Not yet".
  • toon-hub.com runs a TikTok account @toonhubcomics: 113k followers, 2.01M likes, 326 videos. The bio link unlockmy.link/toonhubcomics redirects to toon-hub.com with utm_source=tiktok_social (TikHub 11-06). Recent video views are only in the dozens, suggesting it relies mainly on paid acquisition with little organic reach.
  • The app's Play listing points to toonhub.world (the page has only a template line, "is a group of talented and innovative young developers"), not toon-hub.com, and the developer doesn't match the Cypriot company. Two possibilities: (a) Toonhub or its ad agency built an Android entry using a borrowed developer account; (b) a third party is riding the Toonhub name and routing traffic to its own site. The site says "no app yet" and the package name was swapped in from another template (see below), so (b) or an agency portfolio is more likely, but this is unverified.
  • The same Cypriot web-comic subscription circle includes HoneyToon (honeytoon.com, "only 7.99 per week"; its top TikTok @honeytoon_co video has 200k views), Toon Space (toon.space), Toonbee and others. All are web subscriptions that charge cards weekly.

4. The portfolio: same template, borrowed Polish indie developer accounts

Shared traits: deliberately repeated letters and garbled spellings in package names (toontubee, honeyytoon, toonhuuub, premiumsss, comicssjafe); developer accounts are Polish personal Gmail or Polish company names; privacy policies are the same sites.google.com template (AppsFlyer and OneSignal paragraphs word for word). This app's package com.toontubee.animess.* shares a root with ToonTube (com.toontubee.anime.*), suggesting it was tried as ToonTube first and relisted as Toonhub. Sources: googleplay.app, AppBrain, catifytech, Apptopia search snippets, and the text of both privacy policies.

On the recall card's claim that "third-party chart snapshots predate 09-10 and the listing date was reset": that Sensor Tower link carries a date=2026-08-08 parameter, but the page content is live. The website and the tracking domain were both registered on 09-10, so 09-10 looks like a genuine first launch, not a reset.

5. Competitors

  • Legitimate paid webtoon platforms (content and payments): WEBTOON 194M installs; Lezhin 13M; Tapas 11.4M; Manta 9M; Tappytoon 8.55M; Toomics 7.17M (on the French comics top grossing chart); WebComics 16.8M (all from the googleplay library 11-06). All of these bill through Google. Adult content either isn't listed or lives only on the web.
  • Web-subscription adult / suggestive webtoon sites: toon-hub.com, honeytoon.com, toon.space, toonbee.ai. All use TikTok / Meta paid acquisition to send people to the web, then charge cards weekly.
  • Gray-market packs on the Play comics chart at the same time: MangaNest (QToon Lite) 327k, MangaMuse (AceToon Lite) 788k, MyComics 48k, and the BAV / AWWSTUDIO / GoldenDev batch of wrapped piracy readers (thousands to hundreds of thousands). Most are free piracy with ads; this app is wrapper plus web subscription, so the money model is different.
  • Similar Android wrappers: HoneyToon (same portfolio), INKtoon (40k installs, model unverified).

6. Where users come from

  1. Paid acquisition, most likely: It has AppsFlyer installed and the code routes Non-organic traffic. The install curve jumps in bursts (10-08 about +6.8k, 10-21 about +11k, with almost nothing on the days in between), which looks like campaign batches. Only 0 ratings for 46 installs (0.13%) also says users aren't arriving organically. Our Meta / TikTok ad library (which only tracks listed products) found nothing, so the channel it spends on is unverified. The same-named brand's TikTok account has 110k followers, but its links point to the web, and we found no evidence of links to Play.
  2. Store chart amplification: The comics category has a low bar in the US, UK, Canada and Australia. A thousand or two installs a day is enough for the top 3 (this app is #3, #2 MangaNest is +139k over 7 days, and #1 is WEBTOON). Once charted, organic exposure feeds it more volume.
  3. Padded positive reviews: Among the 5 five-star reviews, many are long templated English ("Toonhub is a great app for comic lovers! It offers an enjoyable way to explore premium comics, webtoons, romance stories, and manhwa…"), mixed with a Bengali "khub bhalo akti app". They split cleanly from the real 1-star complaints.
  4. Name riding: "Toonhub" was already the brand toon-hub.com pushed on TikTok, so anyone searching that term on Play finds this app and the sister ToonHub package. How much this contributes is unverified.

7. Why it took off

  • Where the money comes from: Web credit-card weekly subscriptions (the comparable honeytoon charges $7.99 a week), with no cut to Google and no Play restrictions on adult content. Acquisition cost can be recovered from weekly subscriptions, and that is the precondition for the whole model to run.
  • Wrapper passes review: Review only sees a Teen-rated local multi-ending story app. Only paid-acquisition users see the WebView.
  • Low category bar: The comics category's free chart top is thin. 30–40k installs and a thousand or two new a day is enough to reach the top 3 in the four English-speaking markets.
  • Portfolio account swapping: Borrow Polish personal or company developer accounts, garble the package name, and relist under a new name when delisted (ToonTube → Toonhub → ToonHub 2 → HoneyToon).

8. Differentiation

The product itself has no differentiation. Compared with legitimate platforms, it differs in two ways: what the store shows is not what users actually get (wrapper), and payments bypass Google. These two things are why it runs at all, but both break policy, so they are not a moat. After the "adult content with a Teen rating" report, it could be pulled at any time.

9. How visible it is

No media or X coverage (x-radar found 0 posts for toonhub in the last 60 days), and revenue is not public. You can only see it on auto-generated charts and download pages like AppBrain, AppFollow, Appfigures, FileHippo and the CNET download site. It is "not widely known yet," but this playbook is already common in the gray-market circles (this portfolio, the honeytoon type, and the CineCap-style video wrappers).

10. What others can learn

  • For legitimate teams: "web subscription + Android entry" is a real need. Users of webtoons and short dramas will pay weekly, and companies selling web subscriptions lack an Android entry. The compliant route is Play's external billing / user choice billing programs, or PWA / TWA.
  • The comics chart is thin, so a legitimate new product with modest paid acquisition can reach the top of the English-language charts and get chart exposure.
  • Not to copy: wrappers, rating fraud, the developer-account portfolio.

11. Still unclear

  • Where the WebView finally lands (toon-hub.com's affiliate pages, or another site), and whether TOONHUB TECH LTD authorized it.
  • The acquisition channels (Meta / TikTok / Google UAC) and how much was spent.
  • Real payment conversion and revenue.
  • Whether the ToonHub: Comics & Webtoon and Smiletoon packages belong to the same portfolio.
