Draw a picture with a stranger: a Vietnamese studio ports ArtWorkout's format to Android, 52 days, 19.5M installs
What it is A phone app that pairs you with a random drawing partner; you two follow the same step-by-step tutorial to draw one picture. Free, ad-supported, mostly kids.
Why it took off ArtWorkout already proved people want this format, but it targets iPad subscriptions and leaves Android free to take. Braly used the official TikTok account to test creatives that hit 8.75M views, then bought heavily on Android and drove traffic through its own tracing app to climb the category charts.
BHow you could follow Don't copy the ad-heavy approach. Build what it does poorly: real-person matching or clearly labeled AI partners, a lower-ad family subscription, a friend-invite version, or a local language and theme. Test with TikTok vertical videos like "I drew this with a stranger" before spending on Play.

The ads show real people replying, the app doesn't
In Nov 1, a UK user gave Artmate 1 stars: "Not what the ads show. The ads make it look like the person on the other side really responds to you. Inside it's all bots, and sometimes they ruin your drawing."
There's more than one review like this. 10-22 someone wrote "Most of the people I draw with don't seem to be real," and the same day another said "There are no real people, it's all bots." The ad complaints are louder: "One ad after another," "The ads cover the paint and brushes, can't close them, can't erase or change colors," "One wrong tap and I'm on some other website" (Google Play UK reviews, 10-21 to 11-01).
But under those same reviews, a 11-year-old girl from Pakistan wrote "My friend told me about this app, now I'm going to tell my cousins and more friends," and another wrote "I'm only 5, I didn't know it could make me draw better." Another 5-star review said "What I drew came out really, really nice."
Read together, the reviews show the app as it is now: users clearly want this format, but the product is rough.
What it is
When you open Artmate, you pick a picture to draw: anime, Halloween, cute animals. Reviews mention characters from Demon Slayer, Zootopia and KPop Demon Hunters. Then the system matches you with a buddy, and you each draw half on the same canvas, with a tutorial guiding each step. You can chat when you're done. The store listing keeps repeating "multiplayer drawing," "draw together," "step-by-step drawing."
Free to download, with ads in between; in-app purchases from $0.49 to $14.99 (Google Play, 11-06). It has never charted in any country's top grossing list, so the money is mostly from ads (inferred).
Who made it
Braly JSC is a Vietnamese tools-app studio. Google AdMob's official case study counts it among Vietnam's top app teams, and it reports that switching to a new banner ad format lifted its ARPU by 17%. It has 14 apps on Google Play, about 310M installs combined. The closest to Artmate are two solo AR tracing apps: Artrace at 64.8M installs and Draw Anime at 61M, each still adding 800-900K that same week, 11-06.
Artmate's package name is com.trace.art. It split off from the tracing line. The target users are the same too: people learning to draw, mostly kids.
Tested on iOS for six months first
Artmate didn't start on Android. The iOS version, then called Trace Art, went live first, in 2025-04-11. In 2026 Mar 13, the official TikTok account @artmate_app posted a 24-second video captioned "I drew this with a total stranger. Rate us!" It got 8.75M views and 18k likes. An April video, "drawing with a random person, that feeling is everything," got 1.13M views, and a May video, "I have no idea what this stranger is drawing," got 1.01M. Back then the videos still said "App: Trace Art" (TikTok, 11-06 to verify).
The creative tested well, so Android came in Sep 15. The iOS version is still not big: 18K ratings in the US store, adding over a thousand a week, and a best rank of #34 in the Graphics & Design free chart in the US App Store (11-06). Android is the main battlefield.
Where the volume comes from
| Date | Total installs | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 09-15 | 0 | Launched |
| 10-29 | 18.9M | Averaged about 430K a day over the first 44 days |
| 11-06 | 19.5M | +640K this week, about 90K a day |
Data is from Google Play, which didn't publish day-by-day numbers in the first few weeks. A few days in the latest week show 0, which reflects how often the store updates figures, not that nobody installed. The first weeks ran very hot; it has now settled to around 100K a day.
Four visible sources of volume:
- Video ads. That 1-star review states it plainly: the ad shows "real people responding in real time." I couldn't find which platforms they ran on or how much they spent (inferred heavy spend). The other clue is the ratings: 24K ratings against 19.5M installs, so roughly every 800 installs yields 1 rating. Sister app Artrace runs at one rating per 170 installs, and ArtWorkout at one per 50. A large share of those installers came in through ads and left after install.
- Cross-promotion from its own apps. Artrace and Draw Anime together have 126M installs, and the users are the same group. Braly makes its money from ads, so promoting Artmate inside its own apps is an easy step. This is inferred; I haven't seen direct evidence.
- Buzz ArtWorkout started. On TikTok, most of the "draw with a stranger" and "#multiplayer" videos were made by ArtWorkout creators, with single videos at 1.44M and 2.09M views. An Android user who watches one then searches "draw together" on Play, and the free option at the top is Artmate.
- Category charts. The Art & Design category has a low bar, so reaching the top 3 in 30 countries isn't hard, and once you're there you get organic traffic. Its overall ranks are far lower: Mexico 82, UK 122, US 172 (Google Play, 11-06).
Organic reach is thin: November only has a few kids posting their own videos with a few hundred views, and a Mexican local morning show 11-03 mentioned it once. No press coverage, and nobody's talking about it on X.
Who it's competing with
| Product | Scale | Compared with Artmate |
|---|---|---|
| ArtWorkout | Android 23.7M installs, +186K a week; Apptonic estimates about $790K a month in revenue, about $750K from the App Store | The original format, pushed on iPad subscriptions; its weekly Android growth is only about 30% of Artmate's |
| Art Mate: How to Draw Together(lenoox) | Launched 09-25, 177K installs, +88K a week | Nearly the same name, riding on it |
| Neon Draw & Drawing Together | Launched 08-21, 153k installs | Neon brushes plus multiplayer, two orders of magnitude smaller |
| Skizz (VOLIO, Vietnam) | 2,459 ratings on the iOS US store, no longer growing | Built earlier than Artmate, no paid acquisition, didn't take off |
| Whiteboard: just draw together | iOS US 89.6k ratings | Shared whiteboard with people you know; no stranger matching, no tutorials |
| skribbl.io / Gartic Phone | Mostly web | Pictionary-style guessing game; a competition, not drawing together |
Data from Google Play and the US App Store, 11-06. On iOS there are also small indie efforts like Drawoo (listed 10-28).
"Match with a random stranger, follow the steps, draw the same picture" has only reached scale with two players: ArtWorkout on iPad subscriptions, and Artmate on free-plus-ads Android. Copycats have arrived, but they're all still small.
Why this one
- Demand is proven. ArtWorkout makes about $790K a month, and there's an existing video category on TikTok, so Artmate doesn't have to educate users.
- ArtWorkout left a gap. Nearly all its money is on the App Store; Android brings only about $40K a month. People who want a free option on phones, on Android, have nowhere else to go.
- The barrier is as low as it gets. Step-by-step tutorials let people who can't draw still make something nice. On the stranger side, bots fill in (inferred from many reviews; officially they're real people). You can start drawing immediately at any time, and a shortage of online users doesn't matter.
- Paid acquisition, and ads as the income. Users are mostly kids, installs are cheap, and dense ad placement can pay back. Braly built that skill running Artrace.
If it were you
One-line verdict: worth testing. The demand is proven, and the one at scale has a poor experience, with complaints concentrated on ads and bots. But you won't get Artmate's 126M in-house user base, and you'll struggle to out-monetize Braly with ads. Copying "free with full-screen ads" makes no sense; build the half it did badly.
Who it's for: small teams that can build a real-time synced canvas (a WebSocket plus a simple vector stroke protocol is enough) and have some paid acquisition budget; or anyone with an existing drawing or coloring app who wants to add a multiplayer mode.
Who it's not for: indie developers who won't spend on paid acquisition. Organic reach in this category is mostly taken by ArtWorkout's creator videos. Also not for anyone hoping "multiplayer drawing" alone will differentiate them; two apps have already hit millions of installs with it.
How to do it: pick one of three paths.
- Real people, fewer ads, subscription revenue. AI buddies can cover cold start, but say clearly they're AI and label real-person matches separately. Sell family or parent subscriptions and skip interstitial ads. Half of Artmate's bad reviews are about these two things.
- Build the friends-and-family version. Many reviews say "I play with my siblings and friends." Build a version for couples, families, or classmates where sharing a link is enough to draw together, no random matching needed.
- Change the language and audience. Artmate's content is English-language and Western anime and pop characters, and reviews name Demon Slayer and Zootopia-type characters, which carries copyright risk (inferred). You could do local themes in Japanese, Korean, Portuguese or Indonesian, or an adult "unwind and draw together" version.
How to get users: copy its iOS playbook. Open an official TikTok account and post vertical videos like "I drew this with a stranger" or "I have no idea what the other person is drawing," each 20 to 30 seconds. Once one creative hits a million views, start paid campaigns on Play. Put "draw together" and "drawing with friends" in the store title and description, and aim first for the Art & Design category chart.
When to move: copycats have been entering since September and October, so ideally launch before January 2027, in time for the new-device wave from holiday gifts of tablets and phones.
What would mean you read it wrong: ① Artmate's daily new installs fall below 30K before December and its rating drops under 4.3, meaning the paid spend was a short-lived spike and users aren't sticking; ② ArtWorkout launches a free Android version or multiplayer on phones, and the open space is gone; ③ Google Play delists or downranks Artmate over its children's ad policies (inferred: many of its users are kids and the ads are dense). That would close the "kids plus full-screen ads" route, but it would also prove that a low-ad family version is the right call.

Why Artmate: Drawing Together (Braly JSC) surfaced
- Channel: Google Play, package
com.trace.art.draw.drawing.paint; iOS app id 6744084538 - Developer: Braly JSC (Hanoi, Vietnam; AdMob's official case study calls it one of Vietnam's top app studios). The library has 14 apps with about 310M installs combined
- Research date: 2026-11-06
One line
Vietnamese tool-app factory Braly took the "draw with a stranger" format ArtWorkout made popular on TikTok and built a lightweight app for kids and mass audiences. It validated "Trace Art" on iOS for six months, 2026-09-15 then added Android, and used paid acquisition plus its own tracing-app user pool to reach the top 3 Art & Design free chart in 30 countries, monetizing with dense interstitial ads. The edge is that it's the only "multiplayer drawing" app at scale on Android, not that it has more features.
1. Data (googleplay / appstore libraries, 2026-10-29 to 11-06)
- Android global installs up +642,797 over 19,540,605,7 days (about 9–230k a day, with some days at 0, reflecting store update cycles). 19.5M cumulative over 52 days since launch, about 370k a day on average, meaning growth was strongest in the first few weeks and has settled to about 100k a day.
- Rating 24,034, only 1/800 of the install count (sister app Artrace is 1/170, ArtWorkout is 1/50). This suggests many installs come from low-intent paid users or kids, and few stick around to leave reviews. Store rating 4.55, sliding from 10-29 to 4.62; the 1–2 star share climbed from 1,607 to 2,017.
- Charts: on 11-06 it ranked #1 on the Art & Design free chart in pl and gb; #2 in us, ca, au, es, nl, se, mx, ar; #3 in de and it; charted in 30 stores total. Its best overall-chart position was mx #82, gb #122, us #172. It charts well in categories, sits low overall, and has never reached Top Grossing.
- Monetization:
ad_supported = True, in-app purchases $0.49–14.99; the library shows no Top Grossing rank, so revenue is mainly from ads. - iOS: 2025-04-11 listed (Braly's iOS entity BRALY COMPANY LIMITED). US rating count +1,490 over 18,363,7 days (80–290 new ratings a day); best US Graphics & Design free rank #34; rating 4.82. iOS version 1.1.12.
2. Competitors

| ArtWorkout(Learn how to draw) | iOS / Android | iOS 2021-04; first Android entry in the library 2024-12-16 | Android 23.7M installs, +186k over 7 days, 470k ratings; Apptonic estimates about $750k/month on the App Store and about $42k on Google Play | The original of the "draw with a stranger" format (the multiplayer mode was built at a hackathon, see the Entrepreneur coverage). Focused on iPad and subscriptions, it grew through TikTok creator UGC under "App: ArtWorkout." Artmate brings the same format to phones as a free, ad-supported app, and its weekly Android growth is 3.4 times ArtWorkout's |
| Whiteboard: just draw together | iOS | 2019 | US 89.6k ratings, +7 in 399 days. | A messaging-style tool with a shared whiteboard for friends; no lessons, no random matching |

| Neon Draw & Drawing Together(Mobile Smart Growth) | iOS / Android | Android 2026-08-21, iOS 2026-09-06 | Android 153k installs, +20k over 7 days | Neon brushes plus multiplayer, at a scale two orders of magnitude smaller |
| Art Mate: How to Draw Together(lenoox) | Android | 2026-09-25 | 177k installs, +88k in 7 days | Direct name-riding copycats (see below) |
| skribbl.io / Gartic Phone / Scribble & Guess | Web / Android | From ¥2017 | Scribble & Guess 1.23M installs | Pictionary-style games are competitions, not everyone drawing the same picture together |
| Magma (formerly Aggie.io) and Sketchar multiplayer | Web / cross-platform | — | Not verified | Aimed at people who already draw; needs a shared link to invite, with no stranger matching and no tutorials |
| Couples' lock-screen canvases (WeDraw, Togetherly, Bloom, etc.) | Mobile app | 2024–2026 | Hundreds of thousands | Asynchronous doodling on widgets, with different social dynamics |
| Braly's own Artrace / Draw Anime (AR tracing) | Android / iOS | 2024–2025 | 64.8M / 61M installs | Single-player tracing; the Artmate package name is trace.art, carried over from this product line |
Takeaway: many apps let you "draw together," but "randomly match with a stranger and follow the same steps to draw the same picture" was first done by ArtWorkout. On Android, ArtWorkout earns little (about $40k/month); its core is iPad subscriptions, leaving phones and Android open. Artmate fills that gap.
3. Growth tactics (evidence)
- Creative validated on TikTok's official accounts first on iOS (confirmed). @artmate_app has 20.8k followers; 2026-03-14 "I drew this with a total stranger. Rate us!" got 8.75M views and 18k likes; 05-18 "I have no idea what this stranger is drawing" got 1.01M views. The caption at the time read "App: Trace Art," so the iOS version was still called Trace Art and was renamed Artmate later. Another account, @artmate.learn.howtodraw (192 followers), had videos with 310k and 130k views: few followers but high views, looking like a paid-traffic or creative-testing account (source: TikHub search for "artmate" / "artmate app", 2026-11-06).
- Paid acquisition (confirmed running, scale unverified). 11-01 has 1 one-star reviews saying "it's not what the ads say it is. In the ads the player actually responds but in the game they are just bots", so video ads are running and they show live real-person interaction. A rating-to-install ratio of only 1/800 also fits large-scale paid buying. Our Meta / TikTok (EU) / Google ad libraries don't track this app, but that doesn't mean it isn't being advertised.
- Cross-promotion from its own portfolio (inferred, not verified). Braly's Artrace and Draw Anime together have 126M installs, and both still grew 80–900k over 7 days, with the same user profile (wanting to learn to draw, skewing young). Artmate's package name keeps
com.trace.art, which suggests cross-promotion or internal ad slots. Braly is an official AdMob case-study client (the new banner format lifted ARPU 17%) and is itself an ad-monetization team. - Store search / ASO (confirmed). Titles and descriptions repeatedly stack "multiplayer drawing," "draw together," and "step-by-step drawing." The Art & Design category bar is low; it ranked #1–3 in 30 countries, which keeps bringing in organic traffic.
- Organic UGC (small scale, confirmed). A few kids posted videos on their own in November (@squishy.fan89 "Art mate download now for any age," @jassel_blox3, @starlovesroblox98), each with only a few hundred views. Mexican local show #MorningVox mentioned it once in 11-03. No big accounts, no media coverage.
- Riding ArtWorkout's heat (confirmed). The TikTok topics "draw with a stranger" and "#multiplayer" were almost entirely driven by ArtWorkout creators (@sunshine_arttt has one video at 1.44M views, @titi_art3 one at 2.09M; Apptonic counts 17 videos totaling 17M views). Viewers who search "draw together" on Play land on Artmate, which ranks high on Android and is free.
4. Why it took off
- The format is proven, and the demand already exists: ArtWorkout turned "draw with a stranger" into a video category on TikTok, earning about $790k a month and showing people want to play. But it focuses on iPad subscriptions, and the free demand on Android and phones has no one serving it.
- Small iOS test first: Trace Art / Artmate went on iOS 2025-04; in 3–May 2026 it validated the "drew this with a stranger" hit creative with official TikTok accounts. Only after confirming it worked did it go to Android in 2026-09-15.
- Android + free + ad monetization fits the paid-acquisition model: Braly's core skill is using AdMob to turn large volumes of cheap installs into ad revenue (Time Warp Scan, Emoji Kitchen, and Artrace all work this way). Artmate has low acquisition cost (easy to chart in categories, mostly kids) and high ad density, so it doesn't need subscriptions to pay back.
- Lowest possible barrier: step-by-step tutorials let people who can't draw still finish something nice (reviews: "the drawings just turned out really really good"). The "stranger" side can be filled by bots (several reviews say the other person is a bot), guaranteeing a match at any time and removing the cold-start limit of online users.
- The cost: reviews most often complain about too many ads (covering the brush, jumping to Chrome) and the other side being a bot. The rating is falling, and weekly net adds have dropped from over 300k a day at the start to about 100k, so retention may be poor.
5. What sets it apart, and whether that explains its growth
The difference isn't features but format and channel: it turns ArtWorkout's "real-time drawing with a stranger" from an iPad subscription product into a free, ad-supported phone app for kids on Android, putting match certainty (bot fallback) and a finished-looking result (step-by-step tracing) ahead of social authenticity. That is why it grew: there is no competitor of comparable size on Android. ArtWorkout added only 186k a week on Android, while Artmate added 640k. But the edge is easy to copy; the real moat is Braly's paid-acquisition and ad-monetization capability, plus its tracing-app user pool.
6. How visible it is
Word in the small circles: no TrustMRR listing, no founder revenue disclosure; no coverage found on X accounts or major media (only data-site pages like AppMagic, Sensor Tower, unstar.app, and reviews on download sites weuseapps and cnet). What's been written up and publicly dissected is the prototype ArtWorkout (Apptonic 2026-11-03 published a teardown; Entrepreneur and Yahoo also covered it).
7. Copycats
- Art Mate: How to Draw Together (lenoox,
com.artmate.draw.together.lessons.battle, listed 2026-09-25): nearly identical name, 177k installs, 7-day +88k, clearly riding the name. - Drawoo: Draw Together (iOS 6802523325, Vietnamese indie dev, listed 2026-10-28).
- Neon Draw & Drawing Together (2026-08) showed up around the same time. Neli Creative and VOLIO are also building similar products (WeDraw, Skizz).
8. What to borrow
- Take the gameplay already validated on iOS and ship an Android version with free plus ads, covering the market the subscription-style prototype left open.
- First use an official TikTok account to test which hook works ("I drew this with a stranger"), then launch on Android and start paid acquisition.
- For cold start, use bots or AI as a fallback so that "tap and you're matched with someone" always works.
- Reached #1 across several stores in low-barrier categories (Art & Design), with store traffic building on top of paid acquisition.
- Risk: if the ad promises one thing and the product delivers another (real people vs. bots), ratings drop, and there's risk of complaints about misleading claims.
9. Uncertain
- Paid acquisition scale, channels (Meta / TikTok / AppLovin / Unity), and whether they cross-promote from their own apps: all unverified.
- Ad revenue and retention: unverified. Our database has no daily install curve for the first weeks after launch (app_day_ext hasn't backfilled this app yet).
- Share of users who say "the other side is a bot": several reviews say so, but the official listing still claims "real drawing buddy". Unverified.
- Whether the iOS version was renamed from Trace Art: TikTok copy supports it, but store rename records are unverified.
