Panelo, #51 in Taiwan's Entertainment chart: a short-drama factory run by four people in Hanoi, and this week it's its turn
What it is An Android app for vertical short dramas. The first 5 episodes are free, then you watch 2 rewarded ads to unlock 3 more. It has no library of its own and is one of many short-drama shells a Vietnamese studio pumps out.
Why it blew up It's not because the product is good: Hongguo 10-19 topped both Taiwan charts and taught viewers to watch free and unlock episodes by watching ads. The Taiwan category chart has a low bar, and the studio moved paid acquisition budget from its sister brand to Panelo, which pushed it past 10K+ installs a week and onto the entertainment chart.
CHow you could follow Stop building short-drama shells. Learn the method: when a big player takes a category to the overall chart's #1 in a market, enter with licensed content and a truly localized version. Run two or three small-budget brands per country in rotation, and shift budget by payback.
- Data (updated daily) · first launch 2026-09-13 · 11-06 installs 140,478
Android · Total installs worldwide Data 2026-10-29 → 2026-11-06 (9 days, 6 observations). Google's detail page only refreshes install counts every other day, so a flat day doesn't mean nobody installed.
In Nov 4, an app called Panelo: Short Drama & Series climbed to #51 in Taiwan's Google Play Entertainment free chart. It was less than two months old, had 140K installs worldwide, and its store page had no displayable rating yet. Six days earlier, the same Hanoi studio had 6 short-drama apps on this chart at once, and Panelo was last. Six days later, others had dropped off and it had moved up. Two days after that it fell to #149. Below: what it is, why Taiwan specifically, where the volume and money come from, and whether you should build another one.
What it actually is
An Android app for vertical-screen short dramas. The Taiwan store listing's description is in Traditional Chinese and reads like machine translation: "Romance, CEO, mafia, werewolves, youth romance and more genres" "Easy to fit in on your commute, coffee break, or before bed." The title was never translated and is still in English. Its only listed feature is "eye-catching comic-style design," and the name Panelo comes from "panel" (as in comic panels).
The rules are on the store page: "The first 5 episodes of each series are free. After watching 2 short rewarded ads, subsequent episodes unlock in groups of 3." No sign-up required, and the interface supports 20 languages. As for where the shows come from, there is only one line: "Series names, cover images and trademarks belong to their respective owners." Whether they are licensed or scraped can't be told from the outside (unverified).
It's made by Tranquil Mind Technology, a studio in Hanoi with about 4 people. The Play developer account is registered to the legal representative, Minh Tam Nguyen. The studio's website claims 166 apps published, 75 of them under "Media · Streaming". Monetization is listed as AdMob, Meta and several other ad networks, and it says "300% QoQ growth." On Google Play I could match 24 packages under 6 developer accounts, 19 of them short-drama apps, most published from 2026 8 through September. The biggest are Plotwist at 1.3M installs, Dramio at 1.05M, and Calyssa at 729K; Panelo has 140K, roughly ranked 12 among the studio's drama apps.
Installs come in bursts
| Date | Total installs | What happened |
|---|---|---|
| 09-13 | — | Launched |
| 10-01 → 10-02 | ~115 → ~11.8K | +11.6K in one day, after ads were turned on |
| 10-05 → 10-09 | about 12.9k → about 56k | +43K across a few days |
| 10-20 → 10-21 | about 90k → about 111k | +21k in one day |
| 10-22 → 10-28 | About 121k → 123k | only about 1,600 added in a week |
| 11-02 | 136k | hits the Taiwan chart |
| 11-05 → 11-06 | 140k → 140k | Stalled |
The October figure is an estimate from the third-party AppstoreSpy; from 10-29 on, the counts are from the Google Play store. Paid ads bring in 10,000–20,000 a day, and installs drop to almost zero once spending stops. Organic word of mouth wouldn't grow like that (inference). 140K installs with no visible rating also suggests people arriving through ads rarely interact with the store page, a typical sign of ad-driven volume.
Why Taiwan, and why now
The category was just pushed into the spotlight by big players. TVBS reported that ByteDance's Hongguo short drama app (Oct 19) hit #1 on both the free charts of the Taiwan App Store and Google Play at the same time, and that the top 4 apps on the App Store were all short-drama apps (Hongguo, DramaWave, ReelShort, NetShort). In their words, "the whole 'short drama' category is surging in Taiwan." TVBS also ran a piece titled "Why is Hongguo short drama free? Unlock by watching ads." Hongguo taught Taiwanese viewers the "free to watch, unlock by watching ads" model, and Panelo uses exactly the same model, so it doesn't have to explain it.
The category chart has a low bar. Panelo only added 17.6K in 7 days worldwide (Google Play, 11-06), yet it still reached #51 on Taiwan's free Entertainment chart. Once charted, an app picks up some organic store traffic.
But it didn't go in just because it saw Hongguo. Panelo's two biggest surges, in 10-02 and 10-09, came before Hongguo reached the top. The more likely story is that the studio was rolling out in several markets at once, and the Taiwan drama craze just made this route more profitable (inference).
Where the traffic comes from: one studio, a brand per country, rotating spend within each country
This is what's really worth looking at in Panelo. The studio assigns its brands by country (based on each app's best chart position before and after 11-06): Calyssa runs Italy, Marquisse runs Turkey, Plotwist and Dramio run Spain, Slatora runs Hong Kong, Ferelia and Amethia run the UAE, Rosevia runs Thailand, and Panelo and Sablio run Taiwan.
On Taiwan's free Entertainment chart, the studio's packages take turns charting:
| Date | This studio's apps on Taiwan's free Entertainment chart |
|---|---|
| 10-29 | Sablio 68, Sonnetta 75, Heartisode 80, Sirenya 89, Marquisse 122, Panelo 187 |
| 10-31 | 5 charting, with Sablio best at #56 |
| From ¥11-02 | Sonnetta, Heartisode and Marquisse drop off; Panelo climbs to #53, #51 |
| 11-06 | Panelo 149, Sablio 174, Plotwist 180 |
This looks like shifting budget from one brand to another (inference). It has two benefits: whichever brand recovers better gets more money, and if one package is pulled, the others are still running.
The ad channel is most likely Meta. There's a Facebook page called "Panelo Short Drama" created in Sep 22 with 172 followers and almost no posts, which is the usual setup for pages that exist to run App install ads. Another page from the same studio, "Free Dramas You Can't Miss," has run 2,517 ads in the Meta Ad Library in total, with 11-07 and 440 still live, placed across Facebook, Instagram, Audience Network and Threads. Every landing page I could match points to Plotwist. How much Panelo's own page has spent is unknown (unverified).
Channels that don't exist: Searching "Panelo drama" on TikTok returns mostly Filipino politician Salvador Panelo. Nobody mentions it on X, and no media outlet has written about it. The only pages I could find were auto-generated ones from APK aggregator sites.
Where the money comes from
Rewarded ads. For a drama of 60–70 episodes, the first 5 are free, and the rest takes around forty ad views to finish. The update note for version 1.0.4 (10-29) says only "Improved ad stability to prevent crashes," which makes the ad SDK the core part of this product. The Taiwan store page also lists "In-app purchases," but the US page has none, so it may only be enabled in some regions and at small scale.
The math works like this: the revenue from each user watching ads has to exceed the cost of buying an install. Taiwan's ad rates are high by Asian standards, and the same playbook would pay back faster here than in Latin America (inference). That also explains why one studio keeps five or six brands running in Taiwan at once. Whether it actually pays back can't be seen from outside, since no revenue is public. The only clues are "spend stops, growth stops" and the brand rotation, which suggest it is adjusting budgets based on return.
Who it's competing with
| App | Behind it | Scale (Google Play, 11-04 to 11-06) | How it differs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hongguo Short Drama | ByteDance | Overseas version with 2.45M installs; +7K in 245 days; #1 on Taiwan's Play overall chart | Official Douyin drama library; the free-with-ads model was popularized by it |
| FreeReels / DramaWave | Kunlun Skywork | 246M / 152M installs; #2 / #17 on Taiwan's Entertainment chart | Free short dramas from big tech; Traditional Chinese titles; budgets several orders of magnitude larger |
| DramaBox / ReelShort / NetShort | Short-drama companies | 1.6–310M installs; on Taiwan's Top Grossing chart | Original productions; pay-to-unlock plus subscription |
| PineDrama | TikTok | Downloads passed 100 million (Sing Tao, 10-11) | Platform traffic funneled straight in |
| AuraReel, LumaReel, FrostBinge, PopReel, etc. | Shell companies from Vietnam | 400K–3.06M each; AuraReel +550K in 7 days | Same playbook with bigger budgets; 7-day new installs are 6 to 30 times Panelo's |
On 11-04, about 80 apps with short-drama, drama or reel in their titles were in the top 200 of Taiwan's free Entertainment chart. Panelo ranked #51, which is small among them.
If it were you
C: What's worth taking away is the approach of entering with templates when a category heats up, and running several brands in one country in rotation. Building one more drama shell isn't worth it.
Panelo got onto the chart not because of the product, but because a studio had 19 drama packages, 6 accounts, and a ready-made pipeline of paid acquisition plus ad monetization, on top of a Taiwan market that Hongguo had already educated. If you build one alone, you won't get its matrix, and Taiwan's chart already has 80 similar apps, with Vietnamese-linked shells backed by bigger budgets than Panelo's.
Who it suits: Teams already running Meta or Google UAC, with experience in ad aggregation and rewarded ads, who can handle packages getting pulled, and who want to learn how to organize "brands by country, budget shifted by return."
Who it doesn't suit: Indie developers who have never run ads (there is no product moat here; it's all about spend and accounts), people who can't get clean content sources (the "trademarks belong to their owners" line is the biggest takedown risk), and anyone who wants to build a product that earns word of mouth and lasts.
How to do it: Don't make the 81th drama shell. Take the method instead: watch for moments when a big player has just pushed a category to #1 on the overall chart in a given market. In that country the category chart's bar is low and users are already educated. Use content you own the rights to or user-generated content, make a version that is truly localized in the local language (titles included), and copy the monetization rhythm of "first 5 episodes free, 2 ad unlocks for 3 episodes."
How to acquire users: Start with Meta app-install ads. In one country, test two or three brands with small budgets at the same time, check the return weekly, add money to the good ones and stop the bad ones. Near #50 on the category chart, only two or three thousand installs a week are needed, and once you're up there you pick up some organic traffic.
When to get in early: Follow category heat, not seasons. Hongguo reached the top in Taiwan in Oct 19, and the benefit from this kind of heat usually lasts a few weeks (inference). By the time you're ready, this Taiwan wave is probably over; what you're looking for is the next "Hongguo moment" in the next market.
What would show this read is wrong: ① By the end of December, if Panelo or its sibling packages are still holding in the top 100 of Taiwan's chart and installs are still rising weekly, this type of shell has a longer life than expected and still has room for newcomers. ② If the studio or a similar one publicly discloses revenue showing monthly income well above acquisition cost per package, Taiwan's ad rates are worth more than estimated. ③ Conversely, if Google Play pulls these unsourced short-drama packages in batches before year-end, the window for this playbook closes.

Why Panelo: Short Drama & Series (com.tranquiltmt.panelo) managed to break out
In one line: Panelo is not a standalone hit. It is one of about twenty "free short drama" shell apps mass-produced by Hanoi studio Tranquil Mind Technology (around 4 staff), all under the developer account of its legal representative, Minh Tam Nguyen. It started charting on Taiwan's Google Play entertainment free chart just as Taiwan's short drama wave was building: Hongguo Short Drama hit #1 on both Taiwan free charts 2026-10-19. The studio rotates its brands on the Taiwan chart, and Panelo took its turn from late October into early November. Users come mainly from paid acquisition; the money comes from rewarded ads that unlock episodes. The product itself is not materially different from its sister apps or the dozens of Vietnamese shell apps.
The same studio's Calyssa already has a full report (/home/ljr/fanout/why/out/play_com.tranquiltmt.calyssa.md). This report only adds Panelo's own data and the Taiwan thread, with the matrix background summarized.
1. Basic data (googleplay library, 2026-10-29 to 11-06)
- Developer account "Minh Tam Nguyen" (contact email [email protected]; the store listing names the developer as Nguyễn Minh Tâm). This person is the legal representative of Tranquil Mind Technology JSC (per the corporate registration cited in the Calyssa report). Privacy policy policy.tranquilmind.co/panelo/privacy, developer site tranquilmind.co. First published to the store 2026-09-13; current version 1.0.4 (updated 10-29).
- Installs: cumulative global new installs over 140,478,7 days: 17,635 (app_profile). The curve climbs in steps (app_day_ext, AppstoreSpy estimate):
- 10-01 about 115 → 10-02 about 11.8k (+11.6k in one day)
- 10-05 about 12.9k → 10-09 about 56.4k (+43k over several days)
- 10-13 about 70k → 10-20 about 90k → 10-21 about 111k (+21k in one day) → 10-22 about 121k
- 10-22 to 10-28 basically flatlined (only about 1,600 added in a week)
- 10-30 about 130k → 11-01 about 136k → 11-05 about 140k → 11-06 unchanged
This is what batch-based spend looks like: a day of spend brings in 10,000 to 20,000, and when spend stops it drops to nearly zero. Word of mouth doesn't climb like this.
- Ratings: no rating is displayed on the store (ratings is empty). 140k installs and not even a displayable rating means users barely interact with the store, which fits low-intent paid-acquisition users. There are no review samples in the library either.
- Chart presence (chart_rank): only on the entertainment free chart, essentially only in Taiwan. Taiwan ranks went #187 10-29 → #116 11-02 → #53 11-03 → #51 11-04 (best) → #92 11-05 → #149 11-06. 11-03 and 11-04 ranked 189 / 193 in Singapore. Never charted overall or on Top Grossing.
- Monetization (Taiwan store page, original text): "Every series' first 5 episodes are free. After watching 2 short rewarded ads, subsequent episodes unlock in groups of 3." "During long viewing sessions you may need to watch rewarded ads to continue." Tagged "contains ads" and "in-app purchases." Our library pulled details from the US store, where offers_iap = False, so the two don't match; in-app purchases may be limited to some regions or very small. Most of the money comes from rewarded ads (IAA). 1.0.4's update note reads "Improved ad stability to prevent crashes," which shows the ad SDK is a core part of the product.
2. The matrix behind it (summary, details in the Calyssa report)
- The studio's website tranquilmind.co says it has published 166 apps, 75 of them under "Media · Streaming." Monetization is listed as AdMob + Meta + several ad network SDKs, with revenue tracked daily and "300% QoQ growth."
- Our library has 24 apps under
com.tranquiltmt.*/com.tranquilmind.*, spread across 6 developer accounts, 19 of them short drama apps, mostly published between 2026-08 and 09. The highest installs: Plotwist 1.3M, Dramio 1.05M, Calyssa 729k, Chapture 570k. Panelo has 140k, ranking around #12 among short drama apps. The Minh Tam Nguyen account also includes a caller ID app (Ringlo 280k, Knowcall 34k) and a sticker app (Stikopop), with about 480k total installs across the account. - Each brand runs in a different region. Going by each app's best chart position around 11-06: Calyssa runs in Italy, Marquisse in Turkey, Plotwist and Dramio in Spain, Slatora in Hong Kong, Ferelia and Amethia in the UAE, Rosevia in Thailand, and Panelo and Sablio in Taiwan.
- Rotation on the Taiwan chart (chart_rank, tranquiltmt apps on Taiwan's entertainment free chart):
- 10-29: Sablio 68, Sonnetta 75, Heartisode 80, Sirenya 89, Marquisse 122, Panelo 187; 6 charted in total
- 10-31:5 charted; the best was Sablio at #56
- From 11-02 Sonnetta, Heartisode and Marquisse fell off the chart, and Panelo climbed to #53 / #51
- 11-06: Panelo 149, Sablio 174, Plotwist 180
It looks like the studio shifted its budget from one brand to another in the Taiwan market. Panelo is the one that took over in early November, not the only one.
3. Why now, and why Taiwan
- The category is heating up: TVBS reports that ByteDance's Hongguo short drama app, 2026-10-19, hit the Taiwan App Store and Google Play free charts at #1 at the same time. The App Store top 4 are all short drama apps (Hongguo, DramaWave, ReelShort, NetShort), and the article says "the whole short drama category is surging in Taiwan." As of 11-06, Hongguo still sits at #1 on the Taiwan Play overall and Entertainment charts in our database; about 80 apps with short drama / drama / reel in their titles are in the top 200 of the Entertainment free chart (11-04).
- Someone already did the market education: Hongguo brought the "watch free, unlock with ads" model to the Taiwan mainstream (TVBS even ran a piece titled "Why is Hongguo short drama free? Unlock by watching ads"). Panelo's model is identical: the first 5 episodes free, then every 2 ads watched unlocks 3 episodes. Users already accept this model, so Panelo doesn't need to explain it.
- The Taiwan category chart has a low bar: near #50 on the entertainment chart, two or three thousand new installs a week is enough. Panelo reached 17.6k over 7 days globally and got into Taiwan's entertainment chart at #51. Once charted, it also picks up some organic store traffic.
- Where the timing doesn't line up: Panelo's biggest surges came in 10-02, 10-09 and 10-21, and the first two came before Hongguo's peak (10-19). So Panelo didn't go to Taiwan because Hongguo got hot. It looks more like the studio spread across several markets at once, and Taiwan's short drama wave just made this route easier to pay back. Which countries those surges came from can't be verified; Play only gives global numbers.
4. Where users come from
- Meta paid acquisition (likely, but Panelo's own ads aren't verified in the library):
- There is a Facebook page "Panelo Short Drama" (facebook.com/p/Panelo-Short-Drama-61594538556143), set up 2026-09-22 (avatar changed that day), with only 172 followers and almost no content. Pages like this are the "ad identity" attached when running Meta App install ads.
- A sister page from the same studio, "Free Dramas You Can't Miss", is running 440 ads now and 2,517 in total 11-07, placed on FB / IG / Audience Network / Threads. Every landing page that can be matched points to Plotwist (metaads library).
- Our metaads library did not collect this Panelo page; scraping Ad Library requires login and we didn't get it. So "Panelo runs ads on Meta" is unverified.
- App install ads on ad networks (inferred): the curve moves in batches; 140k installs yet no displayable rating; users barely interact with the store organically. All of this looks like low-cost volume from programmatic / Audience Network / AdMob. Whether Google UAC was used is unverified.
- Store search / ASO: title template "XXX: Short Drama & Series", descriptions translated into 20 languages. Google search results show store links with
utm_source=google&utm_medium=organic&utm_term=panelo+short+drama+app, so there is some organic traffic from name searches, but the volume can't be determined. - Content, creators, media: None. Searching "Panelo drama" on TikTok turns up Philippine politician Salvador Panelo; searching "Panelo" in the X corpus (x-radar) returns 0 posts. The only pages you can find online are auto-generated listings on aggregator sites like AppBrain, CNET Download, Softonic and APKPure.
5. Where the money comes from
The math is that a single user's rewarded-ad revenue has to beat the cost of acquiring that user. The rules: the first 5 episodes are free, then every 2 ads watched unlocks 3 episodes, so a 60–70 episode drama takes around forty ad views. Ad rates in Taiwan are high for Asia, and if CPI stays under control, IAA payback is easier than in Latin America. That also explains why the studio runs 5 and 6 brands in Taiwan at the same time. In the category, Hongguo runs the same model in Taiwan too. Whether it actually pays back is unverified; the guess, based on "stop spending, stop climbing" and brand rotation, is that spend is being adjusted to payback.
6. Competitors
| Competitors | Platform | Launched | Scale (googleplay library, 11-04 to 11-06) | How it differs from Panelo |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hongguo Short Drama (ByteDance / Beijing Bimo Liuxiang) | Android/iOS | Breakout in Taiwan 2026-10 | Overseas version 2.45M installs, +245k in 7 days; Taiwan Play overall chart #1 | The licensed library from Douyin. The watch-ads-to-unlock model was popularized by it. Panelo has no library of its own and no brand. |
| FreeReels / DramaWave (Skywork / Kunlun) | Android | 2025 | 246M / 152M installs; #2 / #17 on Taiwan's Entertainment chart | Free short dramas from big tech; Traditional Chinese title localization; budgets several orders of magnitude larger |
| DramaBox / ReelShort / NetShort | Android/iOS | 2022–2024 | 1.6–310M installs, charted on the Taiwan Top Grossing chart | In-app purchases (IAP) plus subscription for unlocking, and original productions. Panelo relies only on ads. |
| PineDrama(TikTok) | Android | 2025 | Passed 100 million downloads (Sing Tao) | Platform-level traffic routed directly in |
| Sablio / Sirenya / Sonnetta / Heartisode / Marquisse from the same studio | Android | 2026-08~09 | 3–330k installs, all charted on the Taiwan entertainment chart | The same template with different names, taking turns charting in Taiwan |
| Vietnamese "company shell" fronts: AuraReel (770k, +550k in 7 days), LumaReel (630k), FrostBinge (560k), FlickReel, PlayReel, PopReel (3.06M), DramaGo | Android | 2026-07~10 | Each 400k–3M | Registered under companies in pharmaceuticals, construction and so on. They use the same playbook as Panelo and are its direct rivals on the Taiwan charts. Several of them add 7 times as many new installs in 6 days as Panelo does, at 30 times the rate. |
| Dramify (GoldenPlace), ReelSnap (Zenith Forge) | Android | 2026-09~10 | 120K / 1.06M | Same-type IAA shells |
Of the top 200 on Taiwan's Entertainment Top Free chart, 80 are short-drama apps (11-04). Panelo ranks #51, on the smaller side among them.
7. Differentiation
- On the product side: the store listing describes "comic-panel-inspired design," and the name Panelo also comes from "panel." That's just a reskin persona. The features match its sibling apps: vertical video, continue watching, favorites, 20 interface languages, no sign-up, rewarded-ad unlocks. It has no content of its own and no Traditional Chinese brand.
- On the operations side: the real difference is at the studio level. A few people, 6 accounts, close to 20 brands rolled out together, with brands assigned by country, rotated within each country, and a working ad-monetization pipeline.
- Is that why it took off? Product differentiation isn't. It reached 140k installs and the Taiwan chart because of matrix operations and paid acquisition, plus the tailwind from Taiwan's short-drama boom.
8. Visibility and copycats
- Revenue is not public. X has 0 posts; there is no content on TikTok; the media hasn't written about it directly. A Chinese short-drama ranking in overseas circles (amz123) listed other brands from this studio, and Vietnamese media covered the "free short-drama apps climbing the charts" trend (see the Calyssa report). So Panelo itself isn't well known yet, but the playbook is public within a small industry circle.
- Copycats: the Taiwan chart is already crowded with similar fronts, many of them Vietnamese company shells (AuraReel, LumaReel, FrostBinge, FlickReel, PlayReel, PopReel, etc.), plus the studio's own Sablio, Sirenya and others. The category is packed.
9. What to borrow
- When a category suddenly heats up in a market (here Hongguo heated up Taiwan's short dramas), you can take a ready-made template, add a layer of Traditional Chinese store text, and switch in. The category charts have a low bar: two or three thousand installs a week can land you at #50.
- Running several brands in one country on rotation, and scaling whichever one pays back best, also spreads the risk of any single package being pulled.
- "First N episodes free, then watch 2 ads to unlock 3 episodes" is a ready-made IAA unlock rhythm that you can use directly.
10. Uncertain
- How much of Panelo's installs come from Taiwan: Play only publishes global totals. It has charted only in Taiwan and Singapore, but the early-October surges may have been bought in other regions.
- Whether its own Meta page is running ads, and how much it spends: not verified. Google UAC and TikTok are also unverified.
- Source of the episode rights: the store page says "drama titles, cover images and trademarks are owned by their respective owners." Whether this is licensed or scraped is unverified. This is the biggest takedown risk.
- Whether in-app purchases are actually enabled: the Taiwan page lists "In-app purchases," the US page does not.
- The 11-05 to 11-06 install count didn't change, and its Taiwan rank dropped from #51 to #149. This may mean the current round of spend stopped and the budget moved to other brands (11-06 Plotwist entered the Taiwan chart at #180).
