A "drawing on their desktop" video sent a couple app to #1 in Taiwan's Lifestyle category
What it is A couples app: each partner answers the same question and only sees the other's answer after both have replied. It also lets you doodle, leave sticky notes, and play two-player mini games directly on your partner's phone home screen, with monthly or yearly subscriptions.
Why it blew up The founder posted a few demo videos on Threads in Taiwan. The "draw directly on their desktop" clip got 498k views and pushed the iOS app to #1 in Taiwan's free Lifestyle chart. No ads, natural Traditional Chinese, and near-daily updates that replied to comments kept new users around, and it has already reached the top 100 of Taiwan's Lifestyle Top Grossing chart.
BHow you could follow it Take the couples-app formula to a native-language market where no one has localized one well. Put Q&A unlocking and desktop doodling into a single ad-free app, have the founder post 5-second demo videos in first person on Threads or TikTok, and aim for the 2027 Valentine's Day window.
- Data (updated daily) · first launch 2026-09-18 · 11-07 installs 5,708
Android · Total installs worldwide Data 2026-10-29 → 2026-11-07 (10 days, 10 observations). Google's detail page only refreshes install counts every other day, so a flat day doesn't mean nobody installed.
Closer is a couples app that launched in late September with no genuinely new features: Q&A unlocking comes from SumOne, desktop doodling from Widgetable, and anniversary countdowns are standard in older apps. It took off because the founder posted a few demo videos in Threads' Traditional Chinese community, one of which got 498k views, and the next day the iOS app hit #1 on Taiwan's free Lifestyle chart. Below: how it got going, where the money comes from, who it's competing with, and whether this playbook can work a second time in another language.
A post saying "finally launched 😭"
In Sep 2026 25, a small Threads account called @trycloserapp posted:
Made a couples app to annoy your partner with, and it's finally live 😭 The core mechanic is that both people answer questions, but neither can see the other's answers until both have finished. Then it kept growing: you can scribble directly on your partner's desktop, drop photos onto their desktop... especially for long-distance couples!! Really suited for it XD
The post got 159k views, 3.1K likes, and 4.6K shares. The comments filled up with "put an Android version up" and "waiting for Android," and the author replied, "Hoping it's live next week, Google review is so slow 🫠." The first Android users were lined up in that comment section.
A week later, on Oct 2, the same account posted a second time: one line plus a screen recording, "A cute couples app that lets you draw directly on your partner's desktop 😍." That one got 498k views, 10.8k likes, and 7.6K shares. The next day, Closer's iOS app reached #1 on Taiwan's free Lifestyle chart and #16 on Taiwan's overall free chart (AppInsider chart records, 10-03).
The account had roughly a thousand followers at the time. No trace of paid acquisition was found.
What it actually is
Each partner installs the app and links with a pairing code. The core is a daily Q&A: pick a topic, each answers on their own phone, and nothing is shared until both have answered. Answers are revealed together side by side, and each question has a comment thread below. Some questions ask you to guess how your partner answered; others ask you to draw.
Beyond Q&A are small features that give you a reason to open it every day: doodle widgets drawn onto your partner's home screen, notes and photos that disappear after 24 hours, shake-to-draw a note your partner wrote, a memory map, anniversary countdowns, streak counters, plus two-player games like Pictionary, Gomoku, 1A2B, and block stacking. Messages can be exchanged between iPhone and Android.
Monetization is the Closer Plus subscription: $9.99 per month or $39.99 per year (App Store US page), in line with SumOne and Paired. The developer is listed as IndieNeuron LLC, a US-registered company, but the posts, store copy, and support replies all read like natural Taiwanese.
How big it is now
| Metric | Metric | Sources |
|---|---|---|
| iOS Taiwan rating count | 272 ratings, 4.8 stars; roughly +2~3 per day | App Store Taiwan page, 11-06 |
| iOS Taiwan Lifestyle Top Grossing chart | 10-28 #77 → 11-05 #37 → 11-06 #61 | App Store charts |
| iOS Taiwan Lifestyle free chart | Peaked at #1 (10-03), recently ranging #63–176, 11-06 #88 | AppInsider, App Store charts |
| Google Play cumulative installs | 5,708, +595 in the last 7 days | Google Play installs, 11-06 |
| Version | 9-21 launch, 10-31 already 1.11.0,40 days in, about 14 versions | App Store version history |
iOS is the main engine. Assuming a typical 1–3% rating rate, iOS Taiwan downloads land somewhere around 10k–25k (estimate). The listing is in 12 languages, but ratings outside Taiwan total fewer than 50, so users are almost all in Taiwan.
Revenue isn't public. The Taiwan Lifestyle Top Grossing bar is low, and it sits at #37–#107, which puts monthly revenue in the low thousands of USD (estimate, unverified). Small, but for an app that looks like one or two people and is only six weeks old, that's real money.
Where users come from: almost all from one Threads account
Line the posts up against the store curve and the link is clear:
| Date | Post | Data | What happened on the store |
|---|---|---|---|
| 09-25 | "Made a couple app to annoy my partner, finally launched 😭" | 159k views | iOS just launched, and comments in the thread are asking for Android |
| 10-02 | "Cute couple app, you can draw straight onto your partner's home screen 😍" | 498k views, 10.8k likes | 10-03 Taiwan Lifestyle Top Free #1, overall Top Free #16 |
| 10-09 | "Cute couple app everyone is using, you can draw straight onto your partner's home screen 😍" | 97 likes | Same footage, different title, reposted. Didn't take off. |
| 10-20 | "This app is so sweet, you can chat right on your partner's home screen 😍", with the link left in the comments | 3K likes; the reply with the link got 19.9k views | Google Play 10-22 to 10-24: about 1,450 installs over two-plus days, the only big jump on the Android curve |
| 11-01 to 11-05 | "iPhone and Android can actually share hand-drawn doodles now??" "Sharing 4 couple apps 💖" (slipping itself into a roundup) | Around 30 likes | 11-05 iOS Top Free climbed from #133 back to #63 |
Breaking it down, there are three things going on:
A hook you understand in 5 seconds. The quiz unlock is what keeps people around, but it doesn't film well. "Draw a heart on his phone's home screen and it appears on his right away" does. The video demos only that one feature, and the quiz is in the caption.
Same footage, posted over and over. "Cute couple app," "Everyone's using it," "So sweet," swapping titles and betting on the algorithm. Only two or three of them hit. The hit rate is low, but each attempt costs almost nothing.
Going into the comments yourself. Leave the download link under your own posts, reply to other people's "recommend a couple app" threads with "Try Closer, it has 1500+ built-in couple questions," then post "Sharing 4 couple apps" and put yourself in the list.
Two other things were working in the background. One: a store rename. On Oct 7, the Taiwan store listing changed from 「Closer:情侶專屬空間」 to 「Closer:情侶日常・問答・塗鴉」, with the subtitle 「雙人小遊戲・回憶地圖・許願箱・桌面小工具」 packing in searchable terms. Two: couples apps need two people to install them. Once one person joins, they usually pull their partner in too, and if the partner is on Android, that's one of the 5,708 on Google Play (inferred, no direct data).
Why Taiwan: Threads is hot there, and "useful app" posts in Traditional Chinese travel well. The Taiwan Lifestyle chart is easy to crack, so a few thousand downloads can push you to #1, and charting brings organic search traffic on top. The founder is also writing in their native language.
Why people stay and pay
The store reviews show what keeps people around. In Oct 12 one user wrote: "We use the doodle feature to leave notes, just a few words, and when you open your phone it feels like passing notes with a classmate as a kid. I like that more than typing on LINE." In Oct 18 another: "He can see me drawing in real time on his phone while he's at work." In Oct 21 someone wrote "Paid to try it for a year."
The partner side is quick replies. Several five-star reviews praise the support, not the features: "The in-app support responds really fast... and they fixed things quickly" (10-16). In Oct 24 someone reported a block-stacking game freezing mid-play ("nearly caused a fight with my girlfriend"), and two days later the developer replied that it was fixed. Between Sep 24 and Oct 17 there was almost a new build every other day, a pace that looks like a one- or two-person team using AI-assisted development (inferred).
Problems have started showing up too. In Oct 13 a paying member gave three stars: "Dinner questions repeat way too often, I see the same ones every day... as a paying member, don't make us feel it isn't worth it." In Oct 20 someone gave two stars because "the memories feature only lets you add 10 items before you have to pay," and in Oct 15 someone suggested "NT$200 a month for two people." How long the question bank lasts and whether the price is too high are the next hurdles.
Who it's competing with
Couple apps are an old category, and the big ones are all still here:
| Product | Scale | Compared with Closer |
|---|---|---|
| SumOne (Korea) | Google Play 6.93M installs; iOS Taiwan 22k ratings, best Taiwan Lifestyle Top Grossing #16 | Core loop is identical (one question a day, you only see answers after both finish). Taiwanese users on Dcard complain that it now has more ads and has moved to subscriptions. |
| Between (Korea) | Google Play 14.5M; iOS Taiwan 44k ratings | Built around private chat and anniversaries, no quiz unlock |
| Widgetable | Google Play 59.1M | Desktop doodles and widgets, no quiz |
| Locket Widget | iOS US store 588k ratings | Only sends photos to the partner's home screen |
| Love8 (a mainland team going global) | Google Play 12.4M; 7-day +155k | Positioned around widgets, paid acquisition |
| Couple2 | Google Play 4.78M; iOS Taiwan 274 ratings | Launched two years earlier, and its Taiwan rating count is about the same as Closer's |
| Three other apps also called Closer | 1 ratings, 4 ratings, 500+ installs | Same name, same gameplay, launched even earlier, and nobody knows about it |
The last line says it best. Same name, same daily-question format, and one of them hit the Taiwan App Store in January 2026 and is still at 1 ratings. The products are nearly identical. The difference is those two posts.
No one has been seen copying it yet. Developer circles (X, Hacker News, Product Hunt) and the media haven't mentioned it, and its revenue isn't public, so very few people know about it.
If it were you
B. This isn't a "discover a new need" opportunity. It's a "known need + small-language native market + founder posting short videos themselves" play. It can be copied, but the ceiling is low, and the most important step (whether the posts take off) depends on luck.
Who it suits: a 1–2 person team that can use AI to quickly ship a polished iOS and Android widget app; a native-language market where Threads or TikTok is very active but couple apps haven't been localized well (for example Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Brazil, Turkey; check the store charts for SumOne and Love8 to see which gaps are still open); and someone willing to post in first person every day and reply to every comment.
Who it doesn't suit: anyone aiming at the English or Korean markets (home turf of Paired, SumOne and Between, and Love8 is buying ads there); anyone hoping to win on features (there are no new features here, only stitching and localization); and anyone who doesn't want to show their face and would rather just buy ads (at this price point paid acquisition rarely pencils out, and it only works at Love8 scale).
How to build it: copy Closer's combination. Daily questions (answers revealed only after both partners finish) for retention, a desktop doodle widget as the hook, plus sticky notes, notes, anniversaries and a few two-player games. iPhone and Android need to talk to each other from day one, since many couples are cross-platform. The question bank has to be deep and well-categorized from the start, so don't repeat the "dinner questions every day" mistake. No ads, and price subscriptions to local incomes rather than copying $9.99/month.
How to get users: Threads or TikTok in the native language, in the founder's first person: "Made an app to annoy my partner, finally launched." The video shows one action you can understand in 5 seconds (draw a heart on his home screen). Rotate the same footage with three or four titles, leave the link yourself in the comments, and reply to other people's "recommend a couple app" threads. Pack the store name and subtitle with words locals actually search for. Light the fire in one country first. Small markets have low bars for category charts, and one chart run brings organic traffic.
Deadline: Valentine's Day is the peak for this category. Launch by mid-January 2027 and cluster your posts from late January to early February. If you miss it, the next window is each market's own romance holiday (Qixi, White Day).
Signs you got it wrong: ① Closer drops out of the Taiwan Lifestyle Top Grossing top 150 and its rating growth stalls, meaning the people the posts bring in don't stick and paying doesn't support a product; ② you post more than 10 demo videos in your target market and none passes 50k views, meaning the channel isn't working there, so stop doubling down; ③ SumOne or Widgetable ships a "quiz + desktop doodle" combo and localizes it for your market, meaning a big company has filled the gap.

One line
A Taiwanese indie dev (IndieNeuron LLC) built a couples app that combines SumOne-style Q&A, where both people must answer before either sees the other's reply, with Widgetable/Locket-style widgets you can draw directly on your partner's home screen. Almost all the traction came from the founder's own product demo short videos posted on Threads' Traditional Chinese community: 10/2 The post "Cute couples app, you can draw right on your partner's home screen 😍" hit 498k views and 10.8k likes. The next day, on iOS, it jumped to #1 in the Taiwan Lifestyle free chart and #16 overall in Top Free. After that, high-frequency iteration and subscriptions ($9.99/month, $39.99/year) kept it steadily ranked #37–107 in the Taiwan iOS Lifestyle Top Grossing chart.

Note: the data card says "Android is only listed in Taiwan", which isn't accurate. Our database pulled its details using the US store (detail_cc=us), so it can be installed there too; it's only charting in Taiwan. 12 languages (English, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Chinese simplified/traditional, Spanish, Thai, Vietnamese) were built early, but almost all users are in Taiwan: 272 iOS Taiwan ratings vs. fewer than 50 across all other stores combined; the "You might also like" list on the US App Store page is all Taiwanese apps (7-ELEVEN, 統一發票兌獎, KKTIX, Ocard, FunNow), which suggests its downloaders are Taiwanese users.
Play installs are small (5.7K); iOS is the main driver. Taiwan iOS has 272 ratings; at a typical 1–3% rating rate, that's roughly 1–25k downloads (estimate, unverified). AppInsider estimates 100+ global downloads per day.
2. Competitors: who else is doing this
"Couples app" is an old category with lots of competitors, and the big ones are already in it:
| Product | Platform | Launched | Scale | How it differs from Closer |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SumOne (monymony, Korea) | iOS/Android | 2019-12 | Play 6.93M installs; iOS Taiwan 22,022 ratings, best Taiwan Lifestyle Top Grossing rank #16; 132k ratings in Korea | Core mechanics are identical (one question a day, you only see the other's answer after both answer, plus a pet to raise). People were recommending it on Dcard 2023 years ago. Closer adds "draw on your partner's screen" and a batch of two-player mini-games, and avoids SumOne's criticized ads and rising subscription prices. |
| Between (Korea, DLT Partners) | iOS/Android | 2011 | Play 14.5M; iOS Taiwan 43,629 ratings | Focused on private chat and anniversaries for couples, no Q&A unlock loop |
| Paired (Better Half, UK) | iOS/Android | 2019 | iOS US store 210k ratings; Play 4.93M | English-market couples Q&A plus small psychology courses, expensive subscription; little buzz in Taiwan |
| Widgetable | iOS/Android | 2022 | Play 59.1M; iOS US store 388k ratings | Focused on desktop widgets and doodles for friends/couples, but no Q&A core loop |
| Locket Widget | iOS | 2021 | iOS US 588k ratings | Can only send photos to the partner's desktop widget |
| Love8 (Chongqing) | iOS/Android | 2023 | Play 12.4M; 7-day +155k | Couples location + widgets + interaction, runs paid acquisition |
| Couple2 (Youloft, Singapore) | iOS/Android | 2024 | Play 4.78M; iOS Taiwan 274 ratings | Sweet couples space and widgets; Taiwan rating count about the same as Closer's, but launched two years earlier |
| The Couple / Relationship Anniversary / Couples Widget | iOS/Android | 2016–2023 | iOS Taiwan 4.7K–9.7K ratings | Only tracks anniversaries and day counts |
| Closer: 每日情侶問答 (Native) | iOS | 2026-01 | 1 ratings in Taiwan | Same name and earlier, pure daily Q&A, almost no traction |
| Closer: Couples App & Widgets(Sameel Mawani) | iOS | 2026-06 | US store 4 ratings; TikTok @trycloserapp (80 followers, 34 videos) is actually its account | Same name; focused on a live-distance widget, English market |
| Closer: Couples & Relationship(com.anonymous.closer / getcloser.app) | Android | Not verified | Data card says 500+ | Same name; English daily Q&A, countdown |
| DrawTogether and other "draw on each other's home screen" apps | iOS | Not verified | Taiwan IG/FB has reposted short videos | Only the doodle feature |
Verdict: Closer has no genuinely new feature. Unlocking questions is SumOne's, doodling on the home screen/photos is Widgetable's, Locket's and DrawTogether's, and the anniversary countdown is The Couple's. What's new is that these are bundled into one clean, ad-free app with natural Traditional Chinese, and both sides can exchange drawings across iPhone and Android (11-01's Threads post specifically highlights "iPhone and Android can now pass hand-drawn doodles to each other").
3. Where users come from

The playbook breaks down into three points:
- A hook you can understand in 5 seconds of video: "draw directly on your partner's phone screen." It works better in short video than "daily questions"; the questions go in the caption as the reason to stick around.
- Post the same material repeatedly with tweaked titles ("Cute couple app" → "Cute couples all use" → "So sweet") and bet on which one Threads recommends. Only 2–3 posts went viral, so the hit rate is low, but the cost is almost zero.
- Drop the link in your own comments, reply under other people's posts, and soft-insert yourself via roundup posts like "Sharing 4 couple apps."
3.2 store search / ASO (confirmed)
- 10-07 changed the Taiwan store name from "Closer: Couple's Private Space" to "Closer: Couple Daily・Q&A・Doodles", subtitle "Two-player games・Memory map・Wish box・Home screen widgets", stuffing in search terms like "couple," "Q&A," "doodle," and "home screen widget" (AppInsider timeline).
- Localized names in other storefronts (Japan: "ふたりの毎日・質問・お絵かき").
3.3 couple apps' natural two-person acquisition (inferred)
Both partners must install it and connect via a pairing code. Each user who arrives from Threads pulls in a partner, who is quite likely on Android, so Play installs rise alongside iOS. It's a built-in K-factor of the product, inferred, with no direct data.
3.4 what I didn't find
- Not in the Meta ad library (the list we track); on TikTok, @trycloserapp is the account of a different app with the same name. No evidence of paid acquisition.
- X, HN, Product Hunt, and Reddit have no discussion (x-radar: 0 posts in the last 60 days); no media coverage; no public revenue (found neither on TrustMRR nor in founder revenue posts).
- Dcard has several "couple app recommendation" threads, blocked by a verification page, so I couldn't confirm whether they're about it.
4. Why people stay and pay
- The unlock-by-questions mechanic is itself a proven retention mechanism: SumOne already has 22K ratings in Taiwan and has long ranked in the top 20 of Lifestyle Top Grossing, showing Taiwanese couples will open the app daily for this kind of play and will pay for it.
- Streaks, two-player mini-games (Gomoku, tic-tac-toe, 1A2B, basketball, block stacking, Pictionary-style guessing), 24 hourly notes/photos, wish box, memory map, anniversary countdown. Each gives a reason to open the app daily, and the two partners remind each other.
- Responds to user feedback fast: in Taiwan App Store reviews, a paying member 10-14 complained "dinner questions repeat too often," and the developer replied the next day saying a cleanup is coming in the next version; 10-24 someone reported a bug in block stacking, and 10-26 replied that it was fixed. 40 days saw about 14 versions (9-24 to 10-17 nearly one version every other day). The pace suggests a solo or small team with AI-assisted development (inferred).
- Payment is already happening: a review calls itself "a paying member"; the app ranks 37–107 on Taiwan's Lifestyle Top Grossing (the bar for that chart is low, so monthly revenue is likely in the low thousands of USD, unverified). Pricing is $9.99/month and $39.99/year, the same tier as Paired and SumOne.
5. Differentiation, and whether it was built by accident
Differentiation:
- The features are stitched together, but well: SumOne's questions + Widgetable's home-screen doodles + a bunch of two-player mini-games, with no ads anywhere in the interface and natural Taiwanese Traditional Chinese (even the support replies read like "Sorry, we nearly fought 🥲"). Among rivals, SumOne has been criticized on Dcard for "more ads and a switch to subscriptions"; Love8/Couple2 are mainland teams going global, with a different localization feel.
- "Draw on your partner's home screen" is a visual hook that suits Threads short video; the question mechanic is hard to film.
Why it took off: partly. What actually drove the growth was distribution. An account with 1K followers got roughly 650K views in total from two demo videos, which pushed Taiwan's iOS Lifestyle free chart to #1. Differentiation's role was to make the video easy to film and make viewers want it, and to get those who came in to pay (Top Grossing #37–107). Without those two Threads posts it would just be another obscure app sharing the name (Native's Closer and Sameel's Closer are examples: same name, same kind of play, with ratings of 1 and 4).
Why Taiwan: Threads penetration in Taiwan is among the highest globally (common knowledge, not separately verified in this report), and "app recommendation" posts in Traditional Chinese get picked up easily. The Taiwan Lifestyle chart has a low bar, so a few thousand downloads can reach #1, and charting brings organic traffic. The founder's voice sounds Taiwanese, and it's a home-language market.
6. Visibility and copycats
- Visibility: circulating in a small circle. It went viral among couple users on Taiwan Threads (single post 498K views); developers and the VC crowd have no discussion (none on X/HN/PH), no media coverage, and no disclosed revenue.
- Copycats: I found no clear evidence of anyone copying it. There are at least 3 other apps called "Closer" (Native 2026-01, Sameel Mawani 2026-06, com.anonymous.closer/getcloser.app), but the first two launched earlier, so they aren't copycats; the data card's label of them as "knockoffs" is inaccurate.
7. What to borrow
- Pick one visual feature as the short-video hook (draw on the partner's home screen) and put the core retention feature (questions) in the caption.
- Traditional Chinese Threads is a low-cost cold-start channel: first-person founder voice, "Made X… finally live 😭" style. Repost the same material with different titles to bet on a hit; drop your link in comments; soft-insert via roundup posts.
- Start in one small home-language market: 12 languages were localized, but it only caught fire in one place. Small-market category charts have low bars, and charting brings organic traffic.
- Two-person products grow virally by design, and you need to ship on both platforms (the Android demand was built up in the comments).
- In a mature category, stitching old mechanics together, removing ads, and localizing well can still land top-grossing spots even under the noses of big players (SumOne, Widgetable).
- After the surge, ship a version every other day and reply to comments the same day to keep early users.
8. Still unclear
- Who the founder is and how many people are on the team (IndieNeuron LLC is a US LLC; the voice sounds Taiwanese; unverified).
- Actual downloads and revenue: iOS downloads can only be roughly estimated from rating counts, and the revenue behind the chart ranks is unverified.
- The Threads account's current follower count (the data card logs 1,059; not visible behind the login wall).
- Whether they worked with influencers or used a network of alt accounts to repost (no evidence seen, but the 10-02 post's 7.6K shares are high and haven't been checked).
- In 12 languages, can the same play work outside Taiwan: 10-18 charted in Argentina's Lifestyle top 100,11-04, and in Barbados' Lifestyle chart, both only sporadically.
- Long-term retention: complaints about repetitive question decks have already appeared, and it's unknown how long the deck and novelty can hold up.
