The store says "local video management", and Brazilians use it to watch blockbusters for free: Vexplay and the gap left by a pulled "Vex"
What it is A free movie app disguised as a local video manager, opening its film library only to Brazil and earning from ads.
Why it took off Brazilians want a free app they can install straight from the store that actually has new films. It passed review under a utility shell, slipped into Brazil's low-bar entertainment free chart to get organic exposure, and arrived just as VexPlayer September, a same-name hit shell, was pulled and left a gap.
EHow you could approach it Don't. Borrow only the compliant parts: use cold-country, niche category charts to cold-start a legitimate app. If you want to serve Brazilian demand for free films, go the legal route: license free legitimate content or build a legal film-finding tool.
- Data (updated daily) · first launch 2026-07-22 · 11-07 installs 67,307
Android · Total installs worldwide Data 2026-10-29 → 2026-11-07 (10 days, 10 observations). Google's detail page only refreshes install counts every other day, so a flat day doesn't mean nobody installed.
Vexplay is called "Aggregate Videos" on Google Play, and its listing talks about folders, renaming, and local playback. Installed on a Brazilian phone, it becomes "Vexplay – Filmes e Séries", a free film app with no sign-up and no payment. It only started taking off in mid-October. By Nov 6 it had 67k installs, and it added 47k in the last week. This piece explains how it rose, who it might be connected to, and why this isn't something to copy.
A review saying "this one really works"
On Nov 1 of 2026, Brazilian user Tiago Merces left Vexplay a three-star review on its store page: "Good app, it really has films, you can watch without paying or signing up. Unlike many apps, this one is really free and really has movies. Many are scams, this one really works." The two stars it lost were for not being able to cast to a TV, not showing up on TVs, and some films lacking Portuguese. 10 people marked it helpful.
Scrolling further, there's an Oct 19 review "love it, new films and blockbusters are all there" (16 found it helpful), an Oct 21 review "not worth it, too many ads" (14 found it helpful), and a Nov 3 one-star review in only a few capital letters: "the films are in English."
No review mentions folder management.
What it is
A free film app disguised as a local video player, opening its film library only to Brazil and earning from ads.
- Store page: title "Aggregate Videos", description "redefining the local video playback and management experience", covering only covers, folders, renaming, and deletion. Marked "contains ads", no in-app purchases; the data safety section says "no data collected or shared."
- The website vexplayapp.com went live in Jul 14, describing "a private, immersive local video player and memory collection." Its download button links to the Google Play home page, not a page of its own.
- Developer Vlogmagic Team, Gmail address, and its other app is a plain scheduling tool, Planner Time Keeper, whose package name also contains vlogmagic. It looks like an account used to warm up first (inference).
- The Portuguese MOD site tekmods ran an article in late October, "Vexplay Filmes e Séries APK MOD (ad-free version)". The original package name and developer match, and the description reads "streams movies and series online in one place."
- People in Indonesia also install it, but a Nov 3 one-star review from an Indonesian user says "junk app, not a single file". Opening it in Indonesia shows the empty local player (inference: the film library is toggled by region).
How fast it grew
- Installs: Oct 11 under 1,000 (third-party estimate), about 27k in Oct 21; Nov 3 52k, Nov 6 67,307,7 days added 46,718, November 4,000 to 8,000 per day (Google Play installs, 11-06).
- Charts: only charted in the entertainment free charts of two stores. Brazil Oct 29 #149, climbed steadily to Nov 3 #63, still at 63 on Nov 6; Indonesia bounced between #118 and #196 (Google Play charts, 10-29 to 11-06).
- Ratings: 50 ratings, 3.84 average, 10 one-star and 29 five-star. 67k installs with only 50 ratings, about 0.07%; comparable VexPlayer is 2%, Vex Player Pro about 3.5%. It doesn't pop up a rating prompt in the app, so its ranking was pushed up purely by install volume.
- Timing gap: the US store page says it listed in Jul 22, the Brazil page says Oct 7, and the first review is from Oct 16. The most likely case: it passed review as a pure utility shell in July, then in October opened its film library for Brazil or expanded to the Brazil store (inference, not verified which).
Why now
Brazilians have long looked for free films that actually work. Streaming subscriptions are expensive, pirated IPTV and sideloaded APKs are common in Brazil, but sideloading requires enabling "unknown sources", and many apps come out empty or are click-bait. An app you can install straight from Play that has new films as soon as you open it is itself the selling point. The word that keeps recurring in reviews is "really".
The utility shell passes review, and the film library is limited to one country. Reviewers and Indonesian users see a player; Brazilian users see a film library.
The Brazilian entertainment category chart has a low bar. Around 5,000 installs a day is enough to reach the top 70. Once charted, the store's organic exposure takes over and growth compounds: late October it was about 2,000 per day, and after charting it reached 4,000 to 8,000.
The name "Vex" just freed up. The same-lineage hit shell VexPlayer (listed in the store as an editor, actually a film player, 500k installs, 9,887 ratings) was pulled from Google Play in Sep 6; some of its reviewers complained "every film only plays in Portuguese", and its content is closely tied to Brazil. A month later, Vexplay, with an almost identical name, took off in Brazil, and when you search "vexplay filmes" the two store pages show up together. Whether it's the same people swapping shells or riding the name for search traffic, there is no evidence: the three developer accounts have different names and emails (inference).
Where the traffic comes from
- Brazil entertainment free chart: confirmed. The curve accelerated only after it charted.
- Leftover search for "Vex": the timing and names line up, but there's no direct evidence of traffic being funneled.
- Portuguese MOD / APK sites: yes. tekmods' feature page links back to the Play store page, but these sites mostly write to follow trends, and how much traffic they bring can't be seen.
- Word of mouth: a little. Short reviews like "recomendo" (recommended, 13 found it helpful) are not rare.
- Ads and creators: none found. Searching TikTok for "vexplay" and a few Portuguese "free films app" terms turned up no related videos; none seen in the Meta ad library either. Little Brazilian ad spend is visible from outside, so not finding it doesn't mean none was run.
- Media, X: none.
Where the money comes from
Ads only: interstitial and pre-roll ads, no in-app purchases, no sign-up. The films are most likely aggregated from others, so there are no licensing costs; the costs are developer accounts, bandwidth, and constantly making new shells. Revenue isn't public, and little can be seen from outside.
The cost is lifespan. VexPlayer went from listing in February to removal in September, living about 7 months. Vexplay updated to 1.2.2 on Nov 5; when it gets cleaned up is only a matter of time.
Who it's competing with
It is itself a follower, and still small in this lane:
| App | Launched | Installs | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| VexPlayer | 2026-02 | 500k | Editor shell, 9-06 removed; reviews say they saw its ads on TikTok |
| Vex Player Pro | 2026-08 | About 280k | Also an editor shell, about 30k installs in the last 140 days (third-party estimate) |
| Zuxo Player | 2026-06 | 288k | Brazil video player chart #10, lets users "import your own playlists" |
| LiveBox TV | 2026-07 | 276k | The same "your own playlists" pitch, in 17 stores |
| SuperCine.TV | 2026-05 | 116k | Brazil only, with Filmes e Séries right in the name |
| Vexplay | 2026-07 | 67k | Built-in film library, no import needed |
(Google Play installs, 11-06; VexPlayer and Vex Player Pro from third-party stats.)
Further out: Seekee, the leading gray-market film app in Latin America, has 120M installs; in the US, CineVibe, VidFlix, Movirea and at least 9 others use the same playbook for English-speaking markets; Portuguese MOD sites are still packed with sideload-only "Filmes e Séries" apps like Hyper, HypePlay, and VeloPlay. The legal side is the free tiers of Tubi, Pluto TV, ViX, and Globoplay: legitimate, but without new theatrical films, which is exactly what Vexplay's reviews praise. The bulk of Brazil's entertainment chart is actually short-drama apps like PineDrama and DramaBox, each pulling hundreds of thousands to millions of installs a week; next to them Vexplay is small. It reached #63 only because the film-shell niche has no big players.
If it were you
Verdict: Don't touch it. Its money comes from a pirated film library plus disguise to pass review; both are illegal and break Google Play policy. Product-wise it's the same thing as VexPlayer and CineVibe, with no room to "do it better".
Who it suits: nobody should copy it. What you can take are a few compliant tactics: a Brazil entertainment chart needs a few thousand installs a day to reach the top 70, and cold countries with niche category charts suit cold-starting a legitimate app. Watch for the moment a top app gets pulled, then use your own brand and a compliant product to catch the search demand it leaves behind. Start with one market and do language and reviews well.
Who it doesn't suit: everyone. Indie developers face developer-account bans, linked-account penalties, and rights-holder action. On the gray-market side, Brazil and the US already run assembly lines.
How to do it: to serve the "Brazilians want to watch films for free" demand over the long term, the only sustainable path is legal: integrate free licensed content from services like Pluto TV, ViX, and Tubi, or build a film-finding tool that tells users which platform offers a title for free and where Portuguese subtitles or dubbing are, while also solving the casting-to-TV complaint from reviews. That's a different business, with no connection to Vexplay's growth.
How to acquire users: for a compliant app, the most worthwhile move is to pick the chart: first check how many daily installs it takes to reach the top 70 in a given Brazilian category, then use a small budget to push volume past that line and let the store's organic exposure take over.
When to get in early: not applicable. This window isn't for followers; Google shuts it each time it runs a cleanup.
What would show this read is wrong: if Vexplay obtains licensed film rights (for example, the store page starts naming content partners), or if it survives a cleanup round and keeps growing, then it's no longer just a shell and deserves a fresh look.

- Inferred Capturing leftover search demand for "Vex" after VexPlayer was pulled: VexPlayer had 500k installs, its catalog came with Portuguese audio, and it was removed in 9-06. - Inferred Paid ads / creators: nothing found in the metaads library, TikHub or x-radar; tiktokads only covers Europe, so Brazil is not visible there
Why Vexplay-Aggregate Videos (com.vexplay.video) took off
In short: Vexplay is listed on Google Play as a "local video manager / player" shell. Once installed it shows up as "Vexplay – Filmes e Séries", and it is really a free movie and TV app for Brazilian users that makes money from ads. It is not growing because the product is different. It is growing because of a well-worn playbook: a utility-style shell gets approved, film content is turned on only for Brazil, Brazilians want "free, no sign-up, actually works", the Brazil Entertainment chart is not hard to crack, and the name "Vex" carries over from VexPlayer, a hit shell (500k installs) that was pulled in September, so users search for it. It is still small in this niche (67k installs) and has been climbing for about a month.
1. Basic data
| Metric | Figures (source) |
|---|---|
| Developer | Vlogmagic Team, email [email protected], website vexplayapp.com (googleplay database, app table) |
| Another app from the same developer | Planner Time Keeper (com.cw.vlogmagic), an ordinary scheduling tool. The package name includes vlogmagic, which makes it look like it was used to warm up the account (Play developer page) |
| Website | vexplayapp.com published on 2026-07-14, describing itself as a "private, immersive local video player and memory collection". The download button only links to the Play Store homepage. Hosted on CloudFront (Jina fetch, dig) |
| Launched | US store page released 2026-07-22; Brazil store page (pt/br) shows "7 de out. de 2026"; first review 2026-10-16 (google-play-scraper, googleplay database) |
| Total installs | AppstoreSpy estimates: 10-11 911 → 10-16 5,596 → 10-21 10,039 → 10-27 20,583. Our own collection: 10-29 20,589 → 10-31 27,513 → 11-03 52,327 → 11-05 60,156 → 11-06 67,307. Over the last 7 days, +46,718,10-27, which averages about 4.7k a day (googleplay database, app_day / app_day_ext) |
| Charts | Charted only in the Entertainment Free category in two stores: Brazil 149 (10-29) → 112 → 92 → 82 → 70 → 63 (11-03) → 63 (11-06); Indonesia 196 → 118 → 173 (googleplay database, chart_rank) |
| Rating | 3.81 stars, with only 50 ratings and 17 written reviews. Star distribution [1★10, 2★1, 3★4, 4★4, 5★29] (google-play-scraper, Brazil store 11-06) |
| Monetization | The store listing says "contains ads" with no in-app purchases. The Data safety section says "does not collect or share data" |
| Version | 1.2.1 (10-27) → 1.2.2 (11-05 update) |
A few points to note:
- When it started growing: the store listing went live in July, but the install curve only began climbing from a few hundred in mid-October, and the Brazil store page is also dated 10-07. The most likely explanation: it was listed in July as a pure utility shell that passed review, then film content was switched on for Brazil in early October (or the listing expanded to the Brazil store then). Which one it was has not been verified.
- Very low rating rate: 67k installs produced only 50 ratings (0.07%). The same type of shell, VexPlayer, had 9,887 / 500k (about 2%), Vex Player Pro had 9.8k / 280k (about 3.5%), and the US app CineVibe had 1.7%. Vexplay did not prompt users for ratings inside the app, so its ranking was pushed up almost entirely by install volume.
2. What it actually is (evidence)
Store page: titled "Aggregate Videos", with a description that says it "redefines the local video playback and management experience", covering folder management, renaming and deletion. It never mentions movies.
Off-store sources and reviews are all about watching films:
- The Portuguese MOD site tekmods has an article titled "Vexplay Filmes e Séries APK MOD 1.2.1 (Sem anúncios)". The developer named there is Vlogmagic Team, the original package is com.vexplay.video, and it is described as an ad-free version that "reúne filmes e séries para reprodução por streaming" (brings movies and series together for streaming playback). This site's Vlogmagic Team developer page lists only this one app. The article was published about two weeks ago (Exa cache, Brave shows "2 weeks ago").
- Brazilian reviews (google-play-scraper, 11-06):
- "APP bom tem filme realmente e não precisa pagar nada pra assistir e nem fazer cadastro… diferente de muitos que são enganosos" (11-01,10 people found this helpful): it really has films, you don't pay anything to watch and don't need to sign up, unlike many other apps that are scams. Downsides: no casting to TV, and some films have no Portuguese.
- "gostei muito, filmes novos e filmes de grandes bilheterias" (10-19,16 people found this helpful): liked it a lot, new films and big blockbusters.
- "FILMES EM INGLÊS" (11-04,1 stars): the films are in English.
- "Não vale apena… muita propaganda" (10-21,14 people found this helpful) and "muita propaganda" (11-05): too many ads.
- Indonesian store: "apk t41k, gk ada file nya sama sekali" (11-04,1 stars, meaning "junk app, there are no files at all"). Indonesian users see an empty local player, which suggests the film content is probably only enabled for Brazil, and Indonesian users are left with just the shell.
3. Competitors: who else does the same thing
A shell with the same "Vex" name (the key point)
- VexPlayer (com.vex.mawplayer, developer online super market): listed on 2026-02. The store copy calls it a "video editing suite", but it is really a movie app. 500k installs, 9,887 ratings, 4.62 stars. Removed from Google Play 2026-09-06 (AppBrain). Reviews include "best app for movies and tv shows" and "I'm so glad I saw the ad on TikTok", and also "Every movie… would only play in the Portuguese language". Its catalog has Portuguese audio tracks, which ties it closely to Brazil.
- Vex Player Pro (com.vexplayer.pro, Harry Devs Studios): listed on 2026-08-28, also marketed as an editor. AppBrain estimates 280k installs, and 140k in the last 30 days. Its reviews are all about watching films. The googleplay database shows it is not on any chart today (n_countries_now=0).
- Vexplay began growing a month after VexPlayer was pulled, under nearly the same name, with a similar icon and the same type of shell (video tool). Whether it is the same team swapping shells, or whether it is trading on the "Vex" name to capture search traffic, has not been verified: the three developer accounts have different names and different emails.
Other video / player shells in the same Brazilian market (googleplay database, 11-06)
- SuperCine.TV (ARD HILLS, 2026-5.12M, Brazil only): a player that claims to "play your own video content", with Filmes e Series right in the name.
- Zuxo Player (sksenas, 2026-6.29M, #10 in Brazil VIDEO_PLAYERS): an IPTV-style player that "comes with a playlist", where users have to import their own content.
- LiveBox TV (Kaki techs, 2026-7.28M, 17 stores): uses the same "your own playlists" pitch.
- Seekee (com.enzo.paulo, 120M installs): a top name in Latin American grey-market film, also wrapped in a shell (see our earlier Seekee TV report). On TikTok, 11-06 also has Brazilian creator promo videos.
- The same playbook in the US market: CineVibe, VidFlix (com.stick.pop.one, also on Brazil's VIDEO_PLAYERS chart at #11-06 131), Movirea, CineLopi and at least 9 other apps (see our earlier CineVibe report).
Piracy apps off-store (listed on sites like tekmods): Hyper, HypePlay, VeloPlay, Venoplay, Collection and others, all labeled "Filmes e Séries", and all requiring APK sideloading. Vexplay's difference is that it installs straight from the Play Store, which users find safer and which avoids having to turn on "unknown sources".
Legal free streaming: Tubi, Pluto TV, ViX, Plex, and the free tier of Globoplay. These are legitimate, but they don't carry new theatrical releases. Vexplay's reviews are attractive precisely because of "new films, big blockbusters".
The real volume on Brazil's entertainment charts is short drama: PineDrama (TikTok, 84M), DramaBox Lite, Halo Reels, NiceTV, Flash TV, Mova TV and others, each getting hundreds of thousands to over a million installs a week. Next to them Vexplay is small. It reached #63 because the film-shell niche has not been taken over by the big players.
4. Growth levers: where users come from
| Channel | Evidence | Confirmed? |
|---|---|---|
| Organic exposure on Play's Entertainment category chart | The Brazil Entertainment Free chart climb took 8 days, from 149 to 63. About 5k installs a day was enough. The curve accelerated only after it charted (before 10-27 it was about 2k a day; in November it ran 4–8k a day). | Yes |
| Residual search demand for "Vex" (after VexPlayer's 9-06 removal) | VexPlayer had 500k users and Portuguese-audio catalog. Vexplay started growing in October under nearly the same name. In Brave searches for "vexplay filmes", the VexPlayer and Vexplay store pages appear side by side. | No (the timing and the name line up, but there is no direct evidence of traffic being redirected) |
| Brazil MOD / APK sites | tekmods wrote a feature page on Vexplay and linked back to the Play page, around 10-23; these sites usually write to follow the buzz, and how much traffic they send is unclear | partial (the page exists, traffic can't be verified) |
| word of mouth / "free and it actually works" | reviews say "esse realmente funciona" and "recomendo", with users comparing it to a pile of scam movie apps | No |
| paid ads / creators | No match in the metaads library by package name or app name; TikHub searches for "vexplay", "vexplay filmes" and a few Portuguese "free movies app" terms returned no relevant videos; x-radar: 0 posts; tiktokads only covers Europe, so Brazil is invisible. Per a review, VexPlayer ran TikTok ads in the US back then | No |
| popups ask for a good rating | None: rating rate 0.07% | ruled out |
5. Why it took off
- Brazil has huge demand for "free blockbusters", and people are fed up with scam apps: reviews praise that it really has films, costs nothing, and needs no signup. Brazilian streaming subscriptions are expensive, and pirated IPTV / APK culture is widespread, so plenty of users were already looking.
- A shell that passed review + content unlocked for Brazil only: the store page is a local video player. Indonesian users who open it get an empty app, while Portuguese MOD sites and Brazilian reviews describe a movie app. It launched in July and only took off in October, which looks like it passed review first and turned on content later.
- The Brazil entertainment category chart has a low bar: around 5k installs a day gets you into the top 70, and the exposure from charting then compounds on its own (about 2k a day in October, 4–8k a day in November).
- The name "Vex" already had demand behind it: VexPlayer (500k installs) was 9-06 taken down, and Vex Player Pro is also riding that name; Vexplay took off a month later. Whether it's coincidence, name-piggybacking, or the same people swapping shells is unverified.
- Monetization is simple: ads only, no in-app purchases, no signup wall. For users, "free" is the selling point itself, and the cost shows up as complaints about too many ads.
6. Differentiation
Almost none. Shell copy, film content, ads-only monetization, and a single market put it in the same family as VexPlayer, Vex Player Pro, CineVibe and VidFlix. If you want to point to differences:
- It picked Brazil as its market (reviews on the US shells still include people complaining "it's only in Portuguese", which shows the Brazilian sources were already in use) and targets Portuguese speakers;
- It did very little rating work: no review farming, no popups, and its current ranking comes purely from install volume, which is a weakness long term (rating 3.81);
- The shell is positioned as "local video aggregation / file management" rather than the "editor" framing the US shells often use.
None of these differences are why it took off. It took off because of the whole playbook (review-passing shell + regional unlock + low-competition category chart + existing demand), and Vexplay is just one new shell in it.
7. How many people know about it
Almost nobody knows about it yet. Revenue isn't public, no media has covered it, it has 0 posts on X (x-radar), and there are no TikTok videos about it specifically. The only mention outside the app stores is tekmods' MOD page. But the playbook itself is already crowded: at least 9 apps in the US, and on the Brazil entertainment / player charts there are shells like SuperCine.TV, Zuxo Player and LiveBox that come with built-in playlists, with Seekee as the leader in this niche.
8. What to borrow
- What you can compliantly borrow: the bar for an obscure country × obscure category chart is low, which suits cold-starting a new app; watch when a leading app gets taken down and catch the search demand it leaves behind (with your own brand, as a compliant product); start in just one high-demand market and polish reviews and localization there.
- What you can't borrow: disguised listings, and pirated content, violate Google Play policy and copyright law, and these shells usually live only a few weeks to a few months (VexPlayer lasted about 6 months).
9. Still unclear
- Whether Vexplay and VexPlayer / Vex Player Pro are run by the same people: the developer names and emails differ, and no shared domain or ad account was found.
- Launched in July and took off in October: did content only turn on in October, or did it only expand to the Brazil store in October?
- Whether Brazil saw Meta, TikTok or Kwai ads (our TikTok ad library only covers Europe, and the Meta library only tracks products on our list).
- Where the Indonesian installs came from (content doesn't seem to be turned on for Indonesia).
- When it will be taken down.
