ShortFly: a free short-drama app with 4.5M installs, a mid-tier member of a 17-app sock-puppet network

What it is A free vertical short-drama app for Southeast Asia and Latin America. Viewers watch a few ads to unlock each episode. There are also two reskinned versions, Pro and Max.

Why it took off The publisher runs large Meta and TikTok paid campaigns in countries where installs are cheap (the Philippines, Brazil), pitching "completely free, and you can even earn money while watching." A set of sock-puppet apps spreads the risk of bans and lets them take up more chart spots.

DHow you could follow it Don't copy this category. What you can borrow is the playbook: one codebase shipped as base / Pro / Max builds, start in cheap-install markets where top-tier payers don't move the needle, and run the whole matrix from one ad account.

D grade: the product has no differentiation. It works because of content licensing, ad budget, and a pool of accounts that can be burned, which independent developers don't have. Free short-drama is already taken by Kunlun, ByteDance, and TikTok themselves, and there are plenty of sock-puppet copies of the same playbook. Not recommended to follow. Almost nobody knows about it yet

ShortFly launched on Google Play in July 18. By November 6 it had 4.47M cumulative installs, and it added another 320k last week. Looked at alone, it seems like a new free short-drama app. Looked at in context, it's one of 17 almost identical apps from a Chinese short-drama publisher, shipped under a dozen loosely named developer accounts, totaling about 79M installs, with over twenty thousand ads run on Meta. Below: what it is, where the installs come from, where the money comes from, who it competes with, and whether you should follow it.

A 37-person-upvoted one-star review

On Aug 14, Philippine user Jherson Bohol wrote on ShortFly's store page:

If google app allowed me to give 0 star, I won't hesitate giving it. Worst App. Total Scam. … You are forced to watch ads that usually last for more than 100 seconds. Then, as you watch more episodes, it gets shorter and adds are longer.

Roughly: he'd give it 0 stars if he could, 0 stars if he could. Before each episode you have to sit through more than a hundred seconds of ads, and the later episodes get shorter while the ads get longer. 37 people marked it helpful. The same day another user, Renzo, was more specific: he had to wait through 3 ads before each episode, each 1 minutes long, to watch one episode under 1 minutes, and then ads again. He said he downloaded it because the ad promised "no ads."

These are the most-liked reviews on the store page, all 1-star. But ShortFly's average rating is across 4.6.8M ratings, of which 80k are 5-star (Google Play, 11-06). Put those two facts together and you pretty much have the whole app.

What it is

A vertical short-drama player. The store listing says "billionaire romance, revenge dramas, sweet comedies... huge library, all in HD, completely free," with daily updates, 1080p video, and personalized recommendations. It has no original series, just the most common genres in this space.

"Free" is real, but the cost is ads: 1 to 3 rewarded videos before each episode. There are in-app purchases too, from $6.99 to $99.99 (membership or coins), but it has never charted in any country's Top Grossing. The naming and website are also not careful: the site domain is reelshortfly.com, borrowing the name of the leading short-drama platform ReelShort.

A small detail: the store's data safety section says "no data collected," but the privacy policy lists Google Ads, the Facebook SDK, and Firebase.

Who's behind it

The developer account is called Conservative Authority, with a Gmail contact address. The same account also publishes ShortFly Pro and ShortFly Max, all released on Aug 24:

Pulling on these threads, three clues point to the same company:

  • The same website template. The footer of reelshortfly.com reads "All rights reserved. 2026 REVERIE STUDIO LLC." The same template and copyright line also appear on the websites of seven or eight other short-drama apps, including ReelMax, DramaOL, Vela Reels, BonusTV, and AnyShort. Halo Reels and Drama World use the same template too, but with a different LLC's name in the copyright line.
  • The same Meta ad page. A Facebook page called "PassionPro-Short" has been running ads since Aug 1, 20,301 in total, with 442 still active in early November. All are video, across Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, Threads, and the Audience Network. The landing pages include ShortFly Pro, Halo Reels, AnyShort, DramaOL, Drama World, and BonusTV, among others (Meta ad library, 11-04).
  • The same TikTok advertiser. The company running TikTok ads for ShortFly, ShortFly Max, and Halo Reels is Zhengzhou Fengyuan Animation Co., Ltd., registered in China, which started advertising in Jun 10 (TikTok ad library).

Each of these apps sits under a different developer account with a different name: Conservative Authority, Nutri Plaza, Tranquil Oasis Alliance, Racing Runner club, Skylark Scan, and so on, all with Gmail addresses. This is the classic way to build a sock-puppet network by buying or borrowing accounts. When one app gets slammed or pulled, the others aren't affected, and a dozen apps together take up search results and category charts.

This matrix of 17 apps totals about 79M installs, and grew by about 7.8M over the last ~7 days. The biggest is Halo Reels at 12.3M. Within the matrix, ShortFly is only mid-tier (Google Play, 11-06).

Where the traffic comes from

Bought. The install curve gives it away (third-party estimate, many days missing, read the shape only): in Aug 14 there was just 75 install a day; then Aug 17 suddenly jumped to 85k in one day; Aug 23 to Sep 3 it ran 130k to 370k a day; after mid-September it fell back to 20k to 60k a day; then in Oct 21 it spiked again, about 160k in a single day. An app that grew organically doesn't look like this. This is "open the paid acquisition tap, stop, top up again."

The app hasn't been updated since Sep 20, but installs keep coming in, which means the money is still being spent.

The TikTok ad copy says a lot: "Get Paid to Watch Dramas! (100% FREE)," "Retiro rápido sin costos ocultos" (Spanish: fast withdrawals, no hidden fees), and "TIKTOK TREND: FREE DRAMAS THAT PAY YOU!" (TikTok ad library, 11-01 to 11-04). One app in the matrix is simply called BonusTV. Whether ShortFly itself has any working cash-out feature isn't verified. The claim may only be in the ads.

Almost no organic traffic. Searching TikTok for "shortfly" finds no official account or creator content. On X there were 0 posts in the last ~90 days. On Reddit there's one thread asking where to watch a show that was on ShortFly. The only user-generated mention found was a Facebook post in a community of Filipino workers in Saudi Arabia, listing "ShortMax, ShortFly, HotMiniDrama, Drama World" side by side as apps everyone has on their phone.

Who's behind it. Nov 6 It sits on the Entertainment Top Free chart in 10 countries: Philippines #44 (10-29 or 27), Indonesia #71, Brazil #81, Mexico #84, Singapore #86, Argentina #109; Thailand slid from #25 to #192. All of it is Southeast Asia and Latin America: cheap installs, places where big platforms' paywalls don't convert. People there want short dramas but won't pay cents per episode in coins like ReelShort or DramaBox.

How the rating was derived (inferred). Of 98k ratings, only 155 come with written reviews, and there are zero 2-star ratings, while the top-upvoted 1-star reviews all complain about ads. That distribution is unnatural. It most likely means a rating prompt pushed users toward five stars, or the ratings were bought. A 4.67 rating on the store page also makes paid clicks more likely to turn into installs.

Where the money comes from

Ads. Each user watches 1 to 3 rewarded video ads per episode, and the revenue comes back from AdMob and the Meta Audience Network. Almost nobody buys in-app purchases: one third-party estimator puts ShortFly Pro at roughly 2M downloads a month, with in-app revenue under $5,000 (est.).

The math: buy cheap installs with Meta and TikTok in the Philippines and Brazil, users watch a few ads per episode, and ad revenue outweighs acquisition cost. The base, Pro, and Max packages funnel users into each other, so each user gets squeezed for longer. The real ROI is invisible from outside. But a publisher that keeps running 20,000+ creatives across two platforms for three straight months probably has the numbers working (inferred).

Who it's competing with

Short drama is one of the most crowded tracks on Google Play in 2026. Here's the scale on the official platforms (Google Play, 11-06):

Free-plus-ads has already been taken up by Kunlun, ByteDance, and TikTok themselves. One layer down are knockoffs running the exact same playbook as ShortFly: Story TV, HotMini, Coin Drama, CoinReel, MixReels, DramaGo, each in the millions to hundreds of millions of installs. From the top of the Top Free chart to the long tail, you'll find "XX Reels" and "XX Drama" everywhere.

Has anyone noticed?

Almost nobody knows ShortFly itself. There are no public revenue numbers, no press coverage, just a few auto-generated third-party estimator pages. But the playbook (free short dramas, cheap paid installs in low-cost countries, a network of clone apps) is not new, and competitors have already flooded it.

If it were you

Verdict: Don't get into this category. ShortFly has nothing in its product worth copying. It works because one publisher has three things: a large content library, a steady paid-acquisition budget, and a dozen-plus developer accounts it can burn at will. Indie developers have none of those.

Who it suits: teams already running paid acquisition in Southeast Asia and Latin America, with an ad-monetization stack, access to overseas drama licensing, and the tolerance for developer accounts getting banned. For them, this is just a few more packages.

Who it doesn't suit: indie developers and small teams who want to build a product they can run long-term on word of mouth and brand. The negative reviews are attacking the core of this model: the ads are longer than the episodes, and that's exactly how it makes money, so it won't change.

How to apply it: If you take anything from this, take the playbook, not the category:

  1. The base / Pro / Max bundle. Same codebase under different package names, released in batches across different accounts. This spreads the risk of takedowns and bad reviews, takes up more search slots, and lets the apps funnel users to each other. It works for any ad-monetized tool or content app.
  2. Pick the market before the product. Installs are cheap in the Philippines, Indonesia, Brazil, and Mexico, and the category charts have low entry bars. Big platforms don't convert paid here, so "completely free" is itself the selling point.
  3. One ad account runs the whole portfolio. Creatives, accounts, and campaigns are shared, and one set of multilingual video creatives feeds a dozen-plus packages.

How to get users: buy them. There's no organic traffic to compete for in this category, and TikTok doesn't even have creator content about it. Without paid-acquisition budget and campaign skills, you can't even reach the category charts.

When the window was: there isn't one anymore. Short-drama clones started going up in batches this spring, and the entertainment charts in Southeast Asia and Latin America are already full of similar apps. ShortFly's own rank is sliding.

What would mean we got it wrong: ① Six months from now, ShortFly and its siblings are still listed and still climbing, which would mean Google Play's crackdown on clones and misleading copy is weaker than assumed, and this playbook lasts longer than expected. ② Someone builds a free short-drama app with fewer ads, better content, and retention driven by recommendations, and it grows organically in the Philippines or Brazil among these "want it free" users. That would show the gap here is a good product, not just more packages.

Where users come from
  • Verified Meta performance ads: metaads: The Facebook page PassionPro-Short has run 20,301 ads in total, 442 currently active, starting at 2026-08-01. It also promotes ShortFly Pro (19 ads), Halo Reels, DramaOL, AnyShort, Drama World, BonusTV, and others.
  • Confirmed TikTok performance ads: tiktokads: an advertiser registered in China, "Zhengzhou Fengyuan Animation Co., Ltd.", is running 192 ads, landing on com.videoplayer.shortfly / .max, Halo Reels, Vega Drama; copy includes "Get Paid to Watch Dramas! (100% FREE)" and "Retiro rápido sin costos ocultos"
  • Verified Multi-account clone network taking up search and chart slots: The same template websites, all with the footer REVERIE STUDIO LLC (reelshortfly, shortreelmax, dramlyol, velareels, bonusdrama, anyshorts). Each app sits under a different randomly named developer account, every contact email is gmail, and one account ships base / Pro / Max.
  • Inferred Likely prompted or fake five-star reviews: 98K ratings, only 155 with text. 2-star count is 0, average 4.67. Yet the most-liked reviews on the store page are all 1-star complaints about ads.
  • Inferred Organic content / creators / press: TikTok search for "shortfly" returns nothing relevant. x-radar shows 90 posts in 0 days, only a Reddit thread asking for the source of the content.

ShortFly (com.videoplayer.shortfly): It didn't break out on its own. It was built up with paid installs by a short-drama "clone network."

Bottom line

ShortFly is a free short-drama app that monetizes through rewarded ads that unlock episodes. It has no real differentiation of its own. It is one of many apps mass-produced by a Chinese short-drama publisher that runs its websites under the name "REVERIE STUDIO LLC." Using a dozen-plus developer accounts with random names, the publisher has shipped a string of nearly identical apps (ShortFly / Pro / Max, Halo Reels / Pro / Max, BonusTV, DramaOL, AnyShort, Drama World, ReelMax, Vela Reels, and more), about 79M installs combined. The installs come from large-scale performance ads on Meta and TikTok, aimed at markets with low eCPM and a "want it free" audience: Southeast Asia and Latin America. The money comes from ads (AdMob / Meta Audience Network), not in-app purchases.

1. Data

ShortFly itself (googleplay library, 2026-11-06)

  • Lifetime installs worldwide 4,475,372, +7 over the last 321,621 days (about +7.7%). 98,387 ratings, adding 250–830 per day.
  • Best ranks: Philippines Entertainment Top Free #44 (10-29 was #27). Thailand dropped from #10-29 to #25 to #11-06 to #192. Charting in 10 countries, overall trending down. It has never been on any Top Grossing chart.
  • Trajectory since launch (AppstoreSpy estimate, app_day_ext): 8-14 had only 75 installs. 8-17 added +85k in one day. From 8-23 to 9-03 it added 13–370k per day, 9-03 brought it to 2.45M cumulative. Mid-September it fell to 2–60k per day, then 10-21 pushed it up again (about 160k in a single day). This is a classic "turn on paid acquisition → pause → top up" shape, not the slow curve of organic growth.
  • Last updated 2026-09-20/21, version 1.0.5. No updates since, but the spending continues.
  • Rating distribution [1★ 4176, 2★ 0, 3★ 727, 4★ 13715, 5★ 79690], average 4.67. Only 155 of 98K ratings come with text (0.16%), and 2-star is exactly 0. Max (2★=0) and Pro look the same. Meanwhile, the most-liked reviews on the store page are all 1-star, complaining about "watching 3 ads for 1 minutes before every episode", "the ads are longer than the show", and "membership is too expensive" (Play page, 8-14 and 8-23 reviews). The high ratings are likely incentivized or fake (unverified).

2. Who's behind it: a short-drama clone network (the core finding)

Three independent pieces of evidence point to the same publisher:

  1. Same site template, same copyright line: reelshortfly.com's footer reads "All rights reserved.2026 REVERIE STUDIO LLC". Sites using the same template and the same copyright line include shortreelmax.com (ReelMax), dramlyol.com (DramaOL), velareels.com (Vela Reels), bonusdrama.com (BonusTV), anyshorts.net (AnyShort), dramly.net, and winkitv.com (Jina search + page reads, 2026-11-06). Separately, haloreels.net reads "HALOREELS LLC", and dramafuture.com reads "DRAMAWORLD LLC", on the same template.
  2. Shared Meta ad page: The Facebook page "PassionPro-Short" (page_id 1156915574179436) in the metaads library has run 20,301 ads in total, 442 currently active, starting at 2026-08-01. 100% of the creatives are video, placed across FB / IG / Messenger / Threads / Audience Network. Landing packages include ShortFly Pro, the Halo Reels trio, AnyShort, DramaOL, Drama World, BonusTV (winkitv lite / pro), and Passion Drama Pro.
  3. Shared TikTok advertiser: in the tiktokads library, the China-registered advertiser "Zhengzhou Fengyuan Animation Co., Ltd." pays through Lightsail Power Technology Company Limited, starting from 2026-06-10. Landing apps include ShortFly, ShortFly Max, Halo Reels, Vega Drama and Mova TV, targeting Spain, Portugal, the UK, Germany and France.

Each app sits under a different random-named developer account (Conservative Authority, Nutri Plaza, fredom lemedy, Tranquil Oasis Alliance, Racing Runner club, The New Step, Skylark Scan, DramaAccess INC…), and every contact email is gmail. This is the classic "bought or borrowed accounts + sock-puppet pack" play. The upside is spreading takedown risk and taking up more search and chart slots.

Matrix size (googleplay library, 2026-11-06): 17 packages, about 79M installs combined, and about +7.8M over the last 7 days. Halo Reels has 12.3M (+1.44M in 7 days), BonusTV Pro 9.17M, Halo Reels Pro 8.2M, Passion Drama Pro 7.38M. ShortFly is mid-tier within the matrix. Vega Drama (site lists Hangzhou Yuhua Media) and Mova TV only share TikTok advertisers with the matrix, so they may be the same agency, but we're not confident about ownership.

3. Growth tactics

ChannelEvidenceConfirmed
Meta performance ads (at scale)The PassionPro-Short page has 20,301 ads in total, 442 running, and 72 new in the last 7 days; 19 of them link straight to ShortFly Pro (metaads, 10-31 to 11-04)Yes

(100% FREE)", "Retiro rápido sin costos ocultos" (fast withdrawal, no hidden fees), and "TIKTOK TREND: FREE DRAMAS THAT PAY YOU!" (tiktokads, 11-01 to 11-04)Yes
"Watch dramas, earn money" bait copySame as above. The matrix has an app literally called BonusTV. We haven't verified whether ShortFly itself has a withdrawal feature; it may just be ad copy.Partial
Sock-puppet / multi-account matrix squattingOne account runs base / Pro / Max as a trio, and a dozen-plus accounts run the same templateYes
Suspected review farming or rating manipulation2★ = 0, text reviews are 0.16%, and the top-liked reviews are 1 starsInferred
Organic content / creatorsSearching TikTok for "shortfly" finds no official or creator content. X (x-radar, 90 days) has zero posts. The only thing is one Reddit r/ReelShorts thread asking "where do I watch ShortFly dramas?"No
Media / celebritiesNone foundNo

User profile: the top-chart regions are the Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, Brazil, Mexico, and Argentina. On Facebook, a Filipino labor community in Saudi Arabia has posts listing "ShortMax ShortFly HotMiniDrama Drama World" side by side as commonly used apps (facebook.com/saudiarabiabuzz). This audience wants free short dramas and won't pay for ReelShort / DramaBox-style coin systems that charge cents per episode.

4. Where the money comes from

  • Ad-driven: the store listing says "contains ads"; the privacy policy lists Google Ads, Facebook SDK, and Firebase; users complain about watching 1–3 rewarded video ads of about 1 minutes before each episode.
  • In-app purchases of $6.99–$99.99 per item (membership or coins), but peekly.app estimates ShortFly Pro at about 2M monthly downloads with IAP revenue under $5k, and it has never charted in our Top Grossing data. So it runs on ads.
  • The payback logic: buy cheap installs in Southeast Asia and Latin America via Meta / TikTok, users watch multiple rewarded ads per episode, and AdMob / Meta Audience Network revenue covers acquisition cost. base / Pro / Max cross-promote and extend each user's ad lifetime. The real ROI is unknown.

This niche is extremely crowded. From the top of Top Free down to the long tail, it's all "XX Reels / XX Drama".

6. Differentiation

At the product level, almost nothing. It borrows ReelShort's name (the domain is literally reelshortfly.com). Its drama genres are generic billionaire, revenge, and sweet romance, and its features are standard vertical playback + recommendations + rewarded-ad unlocks. Its real "differentiation" is in the playbook:

  • Against paid short-drama apps (ReelShort / DramaBox): it leads with "completely free" and targets emerging-market users who won't pay.
  • Against legitimate free short-drama apps (FreeReels / Melolo): it doesn't compete on catalog or recommendations. It competes on cheap sock-puppet spread and high-volume acquisition in low-cost regions.

So what drives its performance is distribution capacity (ad budget, account matrix, creative factory), not the ShortFly product itself.

7. Visibility

  • Almost nobody knows about it yet: no public revenue, no press coverage, zero discussion on X. Only auto-generated pages on third-party estimate sites (AppBrain, peekly, AppGazers, Similarweb).
  • But the "free short drama + acquisition sock puppets" playbook is already packed with players (the similar sock puppets listed above).

8. What to borrow

  • base / Pro / Max trio: the same app re-published under different package names and accounts, spreading ban risk, taking up more search and chart slots, and cross-promoting each other.
  • Pick the right markets: Southeast Asia and Latin America are low-eCPM regions where paid acquisition is cheap when paired with "free / watch dramas, earn" copy. Rewarded ads unlocking episodes make the monetization path very short.
  • Creative factory: one Meta page runs over a dozen packages, and roughly 20,000 video creatives rotate across languages.
  • Risks: lots of negative reviews about too many ads; review farming, bait-style "watch dramas, earn" copy, and content licensing could all trigger a Google Play takedown. That's also why it spreads sock puppets.

9. Still unclear

  • Content sourcing: unverified whether it's licensed distribution (overseas rights bought from domestic short-drama platforms, with dubbing or subtitles added) or pirated re-uploads.
  • Whether ShortFly itself genuinely has watch-to-earn or withdrawal features, or whether that's only ad copy.
  • REVERIE STUDIO LLC's registration location, and its equity ties to Zhengzhou Fengyuan Animation and HALOREELS LLC; whether Vega Drama and Mova TV are the same company.
  • The spend and ad-revenue ROI behind the acquisition scale; whether the ratings are manipulated (we're only inferring from the distribution).
  • The store's first-listing date 07-18 may have been reset; the AppstoreSpy curve is missing many days in the middle, so don't take single-day numbers at face value.
