15-second dramas, 5-minute ads: ShortFly Max and the Latin American "free short drama" sock-puppet army
What it is A free Android app for vertical short dramas where you watch ads to unlock episodes, aimed at Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking markets like Brazil, Mexico, and Argentina.
Why it took off One operator ran paid acquisition on Meta and TikTok for this app plus a dozen sister apps, attacking paid short-drama apps with "all episodes free, stop paying per episode." The three identical apps charted together and added over 1M new installs a week.
CHow you could follow Don't copy yet another free short-drama app. Teams with a content library and an ad budget can learn its "free + ads + multiple apps" distribution in Latin America. If you really want in, start from the ad experience users complain about most (ad caps, no ads on episodes you've already watched).

ShortFly Max is a free vertical short-drama Android app. Two and a half months after launch it has 1.71M installs, and added 360k more in the last week. The product itself is nothing new. What makes it work is a playbook: a Chinese team runs a dozen re-skinned apps on the same ad accounts, uses "all episodes free" to pull users away from ReelShort and similar apps in Latin America, then sells those users' attention back to its peers. The playbook is clear, but for indie devs it's a fight over content libraries and ad money.
A one-star review, and 360k installs in the same week
On 2026 Oct 10, a US user left a negative review of ShortFly Max on Google Play: "The ads are 15 to 5 times longer than the 10 seconds of drama you can watch... sometimes you have to sit through more than 5 minutes of ads to get 15 seconds." Two days earlier another user gave a positive review but added: "I know ads make the app free, but whenever it shows ads from other short-drama apps, it freezes."
Bad reviews didn't stop it. Google Play installs show it went from 1.35M in Oct 29 to 1.71M in Nov 6, up 26% in 8 days. Ratings count rose from 28.8k to 34.2k over the same stretch, adding several hundred a day. Its best showing on the Brazil Entertainment Top Free chart was #14 (11-04), with #21 in Argentina, #31 in Mexico and #17 in Indonesia.
And it's not growing alone. The same developer account "Conservative Authority" also publishes ShortFly (launched Jul 18, 4.47M installs) and ShortFly Pro (launched Aug 24, same day as Max, 3.53M). All three have the same features and the same description, none updated since Sep 20. Together they have about 9.7M installs and added over 1M in a week (Google Play, 11-06).
What it actually is
The store listing for ShortFly Max is a generic template anyone could write: "Romance, thrilling revenge, suspense, identity twists, family dramas... designed for phones, fast pacing, gripping plots." It's marked "Contains ads" and "In-app purchases $7.99–29.99".
Its target is the big short-drama apps like ReelShort and DramaBox. The leaders' model is free first few episodes, then unlock per episode with coins or buy a weekly pass. ShortFly's model is all episodes free, paid for with ads. Its Facebook page posts short clips with Portuguese voice-over and the caption "Assista a TODOS os episódios GRÁTIS! Pare de pagar por episódios!" (Watch ALL episodes FREE! Stop paying per episode!)
But "free" has conditions. A one-star review from 13 Oct put it bluntly: "Your dramas aren't free." The recurring complaints: ads are longer than the show, you have to watch several in a row, and rewatching an episode you've already seen means watching the ad again.
Where the users come from: one team, a dozen apps, the same ad accounts
This is the most interesting part of the whole story.
On Meta, the Meta Ad Library has a page called "PassionPro-Short" that started running ads on Aug 1, has run 20,301 ads in total, and still had 442 live in Nov 6, across Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, Threads and Audience Network. Its ads don't just link to ShortFly Pro. They also link to Halo Reels, Drama World, DramaOL, AnyShort and BonusTV, which on Google Play sit under 6 different developer names. ShortFly's creatives are all vertical video, with Spanish copy like "Trama emocionante sin parar🔥 Haz clic para ver todos los episodios ahora😍" (Non-stop thrilling plot. Tap to watch all episodes now).
On TikTok, TikTok's public EU ad library shows an advertiser registered in China, "Zhengzhou Fengyuan Animation Co., Ltd.", running ads since Jun 10 for ShortFly, ShortFly Max, Halo Reels, Mova TV and Vega Drama. The ad for ShortFly Max just says "ver series gratis" (watch series free), posted from an account called "TopDrama-ES". Other ads from the same advertiser are more aggressive: "Gana dinero viendo dramas! (100% GRATIS)" (Earn money watching dramas! 100% FREE), "Retiro rápido sin costos ocultos" (Fast withdrawal, no hidden fees), "TIKTOK TREND: FREE DRAMAS THAT PAY YOU!"
On both platforms, the advertisers push Halo Reels and ShortFly together. In other words, what looks like several unrelated small developers in the store is one operator (or one buying agency) behind them. The developer address on the store page is Torrance, California. The website reelshortfly.com is a single page of policy links, and its footer names a different entity, REVERIE STUDIO LLC, with a personal Gmail contact. Conservative Authority also lists a children's vocabulary app. What the relationship between these entities is can't be verified from outside.
Beyond paid ads, no other source turned up. Searching "shortfly" on TikTok shows no organic content or creator partnerships. Nobody discusses it on X or in the press. On Reddit, a single person asked "where can I watch shows on Shortfly?"
Where the money comes from: reselling the traffic to peers
ShortFly Max has been hovering around #150 to #200 on the Entertainment Top Grossing chart in Brazil and Mexico (Google Play, 10-29 to 11-06). Lots of volume, but very little in-app spend. Third-party estimator AppGazers puts this developer account's 30-day in-app revenue at $5,400–26,000, and that figure excludes ad revenue.
The money mostly comes from ads, in a particular loop. Many of the ads users complain about are ads from other short-drama apps. Short-drama apps buy users against each other in Latin America. ShortFly pays Meta and TikTok to acquire users, then sells the ad slots in those users' sessions to ReelShort, DramaBox and other rivals. Its profit is the gap between ad revenue per user and the cost of acquiring that user (inferred; unit economics aren't visible from outside).
The market choice follows from this: Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Indonesia and Thailand have low willingness to pay, many users are shut out by the leaders' paywalls, and paid acquisition is cheaper.
One more signal: its rating is 4.81, and the star distribution has 2-star reviews consistently at 0,5 stars or 84%. Genuine user ratings rarely look like that, so incentivized reviews are possible (unverified).
Why it's split into three apps
ShortFly, ShortFly Pro and ShortFly Max have the same content. Splitting them has three advantages:
- More chart slots: all three appear on the entertainment free charts in Brazil and Mexico at once, and the chart exposure brings in organic downloads.
- Spreads takedown risk: apps that rely on incentive copy and heavy ads can be pulled by the platform at any time. If one goes, the other two are still up.
- Creatives and accounts reused: the same Meta page and the same TikTok advertiser run ads for every app. One creative can push several apps, so the marginal cost is very low.
ShortFly isn't unique in this. Short-drama apps named "X / X Pro / X Max" with random English developer names come in at least 7 more groups on Google Play's entertainment category: the Halo Reels trio from the same buyer (about 26M installs combined, bigger than ShortFly), BonusTV Pro / Lite (about 34.6M); Drama World trio from another team (about 4.9M), NiceTV / Max (about 3.8M).
Who it's competing with
Short-drama apps make up more than half of the top 80 free entertainment apps in Brazil and Mexico (Google Play, 11-06). They fall into three tiers:
| Layer | Examples | Scale (Google Play installs) | Relation to ShortFly |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paywalled leaders | ReelShort, DramaBox, ShortMax, NetShort | 130M–300M | ShortFly attacks them with "stop paying per episode" and sells ad slots to them |
| Big free + ads players | FreeReels (246M), Melolo (147M), PineDrama (84M) | One to two orders of magnitude bigger than ShortFly | Same model, but with a brand and a content library. PineDrama is TikTok's own app, ranked #1 on Brazil's entertainment free chart |
| Shell app matrix | Halo Reels, Drama World, NiceTV, BonusTV…… | Several million to tens of millions | Same playbook, sometimes the same team |
The second tier is the real threat. TikTok runs its own free short dramas with built-in traffic and no paid acquisition, and ranks #1 in Brazil. Clone operations like ShortFly's make their profit from the gap between paid acquisition and ad revenue. The more big players there are, the narrower that gap gets.
If it were you
One-line verdict: learn the playbook, don't copy it. This is a business of content library + ad budget + multi-account operations. Indie devs have none of the three, and the model is already crowded by clone operations and TikTok itself.
Who it suits: teams that already have short-drama content (licensed or produced in-house), have run paid campaigns on Meta or TikTok, and can absorb apps being taken down. That's roughly Chinese short-drama companies going global. For them, "free + ads + multiple apps" is a distribution plan already proven in Latin America.
Who it doesn't suit: teams without content (where the content comes from is the first question in this business, and from outside you can't tell whether ShortFly's is produced, licensed or scraped); teams without an ad budget (no organic traffic means growth stops when spending stops); and teams unwilling or unable to run multiple developer accounts or to use "watch dramas and earn money" incentive copy (Google and Meta have policies against this kind of copy, so it's a grey area).
If you do build it, how: don't build another "all episodes free" short-drama app. Build what it does badly. The three complaints that come up most, that ads are longer than the show, that rewatching still means ads, and that other apps' ads freeze it, show the ad experience itself is the point of difference: ad frequency caps, no ads on episodes already watched, and a cheap daily ad-free pass. This could become a lightweight, Latin America-focused version, but you'd still have to solve content sourcing yourself.
How to acquire users: follow its path. Use vertical clips of the plot's peak moments as creatives, with Spanish or Portuguese voice-over, and lead with "all episodes free." Test with a small budget in one country first, and scale up only once you find creatives where ad revenue covers acquisition cost (inferred). Don't count on organic TikTok reach. ShortFly didn't get it either.
When the window closes: there's no clear deadline. The window isn't closed by time, it's closed by the big players. Each month PineDrama and FreeReels keep spending, clone-operation paid acquisition gets more expensive.
What would show you're wrong: (1) if the ShortFly trio and the Halo Reels trio keep weekly install growth in the hundreds of thousands after 2027 January and their live Meta ads don't drop, the gap is wider than it looks and worth revisiting; (2) conversely, if these apps start being pulled in batches or stop running ads, either the platform has stepped in or the unit economics don't work, and the model should be read as a cautionary tale.

Bottom line
ShortFly Max isn't a standalone product. It's one package in a "sock-puppet matrix" run by a Chinese short-drama-for-export team. The same team has published a row of near-identical "free short drama + ad-monetized" apps under different developer names: ShortFly / ShortFly Pro / ShortFly Max, Halo Reels (three packages), Drama World (three packages), BonusTV (Pro/Lite), AnyShort, DramaOL, Mova TV, Vega Drama and more. They buy Meta and TikTok ads from a shared set of ad accounts, pitching "full episodes free" and "earn money watching dramas" to Latin American markets (Brazil, Mexico, Argentina) and Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking audiences. It gets charted because of paid acquisition plus multi-package distribution, not because the product itself is different.
1. Data: how big it is now
- Installs: 2026-11-06 total as of 1,712,069, +7 over the last 359,070 days. 10-29 grew 1,352,999,8% in 26.5 days [GP app_profile / app_snap].
- Ratings: 28,820 → 34,153 over the same period, adding 200–980 per day. Average 4.81. The 1-star share stays at 2 while 0,5-star holds 84% [GP app_snap.histogram]. That distribution is rare among real users, so it may reflect incentivized reviews (unverified).
- Charts: the Entertainment Top Free chart peaks at #14 in Brazil (11-04), 31 in Mexico, 21 in Argentina, 17 in Indonesia, and 77 in Thailand. But Brazil and Mexico Entertainment Top Grossing has stayed between #152 and #197 the whole time [GP chart_rank]. So the downloads are there, but the money isn't.
- Third-party estimate: AppGazers puts in-app revenue at $5.4K–$26K over 30 days, with 290k–1.4M downloads (https://appgazers.com/reports/developers/android-Conservative+Authority). Most revenue should come from ads, which this estimate doesn't include.
- Sibling packages under the same dev account (all on version 1.0.4/1.0.5, no updates since Sep 21) [GP]: | Package | Launch | Installs (11-06) | Last 7 days | |---|---|---|---| | com.videoplayer.shortfly (ShortFly) | 2026-07-18 | 4,475,372 | +321,621 | | com.videoplayer.shortfly.pro (ShortFly Pro) | 2026-08-24 | 3,525,317 | +336,703 | | com.videoplayer.shortfly.max (ShortFly Max) | 2026-08-24 | 1,712,069 | +359,070 | Combined, the three packages have about 9.7M installs, and more than 1M in a single week.
2. Competitors: who else does the same thing
The niche is vertical short drama (micro-drama). In the top 80 of Brazil and Mexico's entertainment free charts, short-drama apps make up more than half [GP chart_rank 2026-11-06]. There are three tiers:
- Top tier, paid unlock: ReelShort (2022B installs), DramaBox (2023B), NetShort (2024B), GoodShort (2023B), ShortMax (2023B). Priced per episode or by subscription, top 15 in Top Grossing.
- Free + ads (same model as ShortFly): FreeReels (Skywork, 2024-11.2B), Melolo (2024-11.1B), PineDrama (made by TikTok itself, 2025-1.28B, #1 on Brazil's free chart), DramaBox Lite (2025-129M), FreeDrama (2026-443M). Big companies are competing in this tier, and each is one to two orders of magnitude bigger than ShortFly.
- Same-period sock-puppet matrix: Halo Reels / Pro / Max (Nutri Plaza, 2026-07/08, about 26M combined), Drama World / Pro / Max (Skylark Scan, 2026-07/09, about 4.9M), NiceTV / Max (KKM slimer club, 2026-08/09, about 3.8M), BonusTV / Pro / Lite (DramaAccess INC, about 34.6M), plus DramaOL, AnyShort, Mova TV, Vega Drama and others [GP apps]. The names all follow "X / X Pro / X Max", and the dev account names are random English word pairs.
3. Growth levers: where users come from
Paid acquisition, and one team buying for a whole matrix (confirmed):
- Meta ad library, homepage "PassionPro-Short": 442 ads running right now, 20,301 in total, first launched Aug 1, 72 new ads in the last 7 days. Running on Facebook / Instagram / Audience Network / Messenger / Threads, CTA "Watch more". The Play apps it links to include ShortFly Pro (19 ads running), Halo Reels / Pro / Max, Drama World, DramaOL, AnyShort, BonusTV Pro / Lite, Passion Drama Pro. Spread across 6 different "developers" [Meta advertiser page_id 1156915574179436, app_link]. ShortFly's creatives are videos, with copy like "Trama emocionante sin parar🔥 Haz clic para ver todos los episodios ahora😍" and "Super intense, never-ending dramatic plots full of shocking reversals" [Meta ad].
(100% GRATIS)」「Get Paid to Watch Dramas!」「Retiro rápido sin costos ocultos」(快速提现、无隐藏费用)「TIKTOK TREND: FREE DRAMAS THAT PAY YOU!」[TT advertiser 7637090378138746896、ad_text]。 结论:Meta 和 TikTok 两边的广告主都同时推 Halo Reels 和 ShortFly,能证明这些「不同开发者」背后是同一个运营方(或同一个代投方),河南郑州的公司。
- Facebook organic / page: a Facebook page named "ShortFly" posts Portuguese-dubbed short-drama clips. Copy: "Assista a TODOS os episódios GRÁTIS! Pare de pagar por episódios!" ("Watch ALL episodes FREE! Stop paying per episode!") and "Sai da Minha Bugatti (Dublado)" (from search result snippets; original posts are gone).
- In-store: chart exposure (top 20–30 on Brazil's entertainment free chart) in turn drives organic downloads. Three packages occupy chart slots at the same time.
- Not found: no organic ShortFly content or creator partnerships on TikTok (a TikHub search for "shortfly" returned 20 results, none of them ShortFly's). No mentions on X (x-radar: 0 posts in the last 60 days) or in media coverage. On Reddit r/ReelShorts there's a single post asking "where can I watch ShortFly's shows" (body not read, 403).
4. Why users come and stay
- Why users come: Latin American users are stuck on ReelShort and DramaBox's per-episode paywalls (dozens of coins per episode, weekly passes at $7–20). The "all episodes free" hook works well in markets with low willingness to pay, and copy that pitches "watch dramas and earn" adds an incentive on top.
- Why they keep users and where the money comes back: the store page is marked "Contains ads"; user reviews say "I know ads are what make the App free", "the ads are 5–10 times longer than the 15-second episodes", "other short-drama Apps' ads freeze it" (Play US reviews, 2026-10-08 / 10-10). So the main model is rewarded video / interstitial ad monetization, plus $7.99–$29.99 in-app purchases (ad removal or unlocks). One user complained "your dramas aren't free either" (10-13), which shows the free access comes with conditions.
- The ads shown are ads for other short-drama apps. Short-drama apps buy ads from one another: ShortFly buys ads on one side and sells ad slots to rivals on the other, earning the spread between eCPM and acquisition cost.
5. Differentiation
- On the product itself there's almost no difference: the descriptions are templated (romance, revenge, identity swap, family drama), all three packages have the same features, and none has been updated since Sep 21. The site reelshortfly.com has just one page of policy links, the footer names a different entity, REVERIE STUDIO LLC, and the contact email is a personal Gmail [GP app.developer_email, www.reelshortfly.com/]. The domain contains "reelshort", so it's riding on ReelShort's name.
- The real difference is in the distribution structure: ① free + ads, undercutting the paid leaders on price; ② one IP split into three packages (base / Pro / Max), each charting separately and passing review separately, so one takedown doesn't kill everything; ③ several developer accounts sharing one paid-acquisition account, with creatives and campaigns reused, so marginal cost is very low; ④ spend only in markets with cheap CPI: Latin America, Spanish-speaking and Portuguese-speaking, and Southeast Asia.
- These differences are exactly why it's working, but they're differences in playbook, not in product. FreeReels, Melolo and PineDrama already run the same model, at bigger scale.
6. How many people know about it / follow the trend
- Almost nobody knows about it yet: no public revenue, no media or X discussion, only auto-generated listing pages on AppBrain / APKPure / Softonic.
- Copycats: the model itself is copied in bulk. The same team's Halo Reels (three-pack, 26M) is bigger than ShortFly. Other teams' Drama World three-pack, NiceTV / Max and BonusTV Pro / Lite use the same play. In our database, at least 7 groups under Entertainment use the "base + .pro/.max/.lite" structure and are short drama apps [GP app].
7. What to borrow
- LatAm / Spanish and Portuguese markets + the "free full episodes" hook + rewarded video ads. In low-CPI markets, ad revenue can cover paid acquisition.
- One brand split into several packages / several developer accounts, sharing one paid-acquisition account, to spread takedown risk and hold more chart slots.
- Copy like "watch dramas and earn money" lifts click-through rates (high compliance risk; Google and Meta have policies on incentive-style copy).
8. Still unclear
- Who runs it: TikTok shows Zhengzhou Fengyuan Animation Co., Ltd. + Lightsail Power Technology, while the website footer says REVERIE STUDIO LLC. Whether the two are related hasn't been verified.
- Whether the app actually has a "withdraw earnings from watching dramas" feature, or whether that's just ad copy. Not verified by installing the app.
- Content source: self-produced / licensed, or re-uploaded from other shows? A user asking "where can I watch Shortfly's dramas" hints at exclusive or dubious sources. Unverified.
- Unit economics: no data on whether ad revenue covers paid acquisition. A low Top Grossing rank only tells us in-app purchase revenue isn't large.
- Whether the unusual rating distribution (2-star ratings at 0, 5-star at 84%) is review manipulation. Unverified.
- Meta ad volume in the US store / Brazil (our Meta database only recorded this page being found under JP keywords; total live ads across all countries is 442).
