A borrowed name: "Dazz Cam" on Google Play hit 640k installs in two months, but the original Dazz never shipped on Android
What it is A retro film camera on Google Play with the same name as the iPhone hit Dazz Cam. It has 27 virtual cameras, charges via in-app purchase, and the developer is not the real Dazz.
Why it took off The official Dazz is iOS-only. Shots posted on TikTok and Instagram kept Android users searching, and this app took the top Play search spot with the identical name. In early November it also pushed paid campaigns in a dozen-plus countries at the same time to climb the charts.
CHow you could approach it Don't copy the borrowed name. Treat "hot on iPhone, missing on Android" as a topic signal, and build a narrow angle of your own (for example, only date stamps or digital compact-camera looks), give away a few cameras for free, and acquire users through store search and TikTok creators in Brazil, the Philippines, and Mexico who teach "getting the Dazz look on Android."

Dazz Cam, the retro camera app that's been a hit on iPhone for seven years, never shipped an Android version. In Aug 30, a company called MA CLO APPS listed an app on Google Play with the exact same name, "Dazz Cam." By Nov 6 it had 643k installs, and in the last 7 days alone it added 179k. It has no feature nobody else has. It runs on the name. Here's the breakdown: where the traffic comes from, where the money comes from, who's competing for the same people, how you'd play this, and which paths to avoid.
A Brazilian video with 5.15M views, and a line: "Do you have Android?"
In Jan 2026 23, Brazilian photography account @jonasamador posted a TikTok with the caption "a moda agora é fazer foto assim" (this is the trend now: taking photos like this), tagged #dazzcam, and it hit 5.15M views. He went on to post several more "te amo Dazz cam" videos. His October one also pulled 250k views (TikTok search, 11-06).
The problem is that a large share of the people watching these videos use Android phones. In June 9, another Brazilian account, @vannysouzatech, posted a 198k-view video whose first line was: "You have Android and always wanted the Dazz Cam look?" It then recommended an alternative. This question isn't new: back in 2023, a creator replied to fans "lots of people ask whether Dazz Cam has an Android version," and that video reached 6M views. On Dazz's own Reddit community, posts like "For Android??" and "Why no Android" keep resurfacing.
The official Dazz Cam (DAZZ PTE. LTD.) launched in 2018, iOS only. It has 1.18M ratings in the China App Store, 117k in the US store, and 132k in Brazil (App Store, 11-06). The official site dazz.ltd only has an iOS download button.
The people who want it keep searching, and the real product never shows up. MA CLO APPS stepped into that gap.
What it is
A retro film camera with 27 virtual bodies (35mm color negative, instant film, single-use flash, early digital compacts, infrared…), 22 color looks, and 7 frame styles, with grain and light leaks visible live in the viewfinder. Every photo keeps a copy of the original raw, so you can "re-develop" it with a different film later. No account, no upload, all photos processed on the phone. In-app purchases run $6.99–$19.99 per item, with no ads.
The store listing is professionally written, but the word "Dazz" never appears. The first line is "Vintage Camera puts a shelf of analog bodies in your pocket," and the package name is com.vintage.camera.pro. "Dazz Cam" appears in only one place: the app title.
Functionally, it's no different from the similar apps that have sat on Play for five or six years. Its only distinction is a name identical to the hit on iPhone.
Where the traffic comes from: search "dazz cam" and it ranks first
Users are genuinely treating it as the real thing. Instagram's auto-generated "Dazz Cam On Android" topic page, in its summary, reads "the main app from MA CLO APPS, with cameras like GX 400, DATE 90 … as of October 2026, 570k installs." A Taiwanese Threads user screenshotted two apps both called Dazz Cam, both from MA CLO APPS, and asked "which one is good, or are they really the same?"
So what actually drives its traffic is the buzz around the official Dazz on TikTok and Instagram: someone posts a photo, Android users want it, they search, and this app shows up.
The November wave: 13 countries peaked on the same day
It installed slowly for the first two months: from August 30 to October 29, 464k installs, about 7,700 a day. Then November suddenly sped up:
| Date | Total installs | Added that day | New ratings that day |
|---|---|---|---|
| 11-01 | 478,395 | +14,120 | +4 |
| 11-02 | 537,912 | +59,517 | +8 |
| 11-03 | 567,585 | +29,673 | +7 |
| 11-05 | 611,188 | +43,603 | +14 |
| 11-06 | 643,344 | +32,156 | +7 |
Public Google Play data, 11-01 to 11-06; the 11-04 figure wasn't updated that day and is merged into 11-05.
Two things look off. First, in 7 days it got 179k installs but only 66 more ratings, about 0.04%. In the same week, ProCCD sat at 0.9% and OldRoll at 0.2%, so it runs 5 to 20 times lower. Second, it hit the top of the Photo & Video free chart in 16 storefronts almost on the same day, then dropped off on the same day too. Hong Kong went from 59 up to #13 on Nov 2, then fell back to #45. Singapore went from 11-02 to #20, then slid back to #57 from 11-06. The UK peaked at #72, Canada at #61 (11-03), and Japan at #57 (11-04). With ~30-40K Japan installs, it never appears in the top 200 of the Photo & Video charts in the US, India, or Indonesia, the big markets.
Word of mouth spreading across countries wouldn't line up this neatly. It looks more like a coordinated push or paid promotion, and the quality of those installs is low. Whether they were bought ads, incentivized installs, or fraud can't be verified from outside; this is inference.
Where the money comes from: Brazil, and one-star reviews
It ranks #46 to #56 on Brazil's photography Top Grossing chart (since November 1), the only country where it reached that chart. That matches the Brazilian TikToks at the start: Dazz is hottest in Brazil, and that's where the most people want an Android version.
Some people do pay, but more people complain. 2.7 stars, and 464 of the 214 ratings are one-star (Google Play, 11-06). The top three reviews on the Brazilian store page are all one-star from mid-September:
I thought I could at least try the camera first, but even the most basic features cost money. Worse, none of that was made clear before I downloaded it. (gyovannamelo, 9-19,84 people found this helpful)
All errors. The photos come out upside down. There isn't a single free tool; everything costs money… (Maria Clara Bastos Albuquerque, 9-18)
The developer clearly noticed. The note for the most recent update reads: "Some new phones no longer produce upside-down photos; three classic cameras are now free; failed purchases now tell you why and give you a retry button."
On the flip side, the top three pinned reviews on the English store page are all five-star, written on just three days between September 6 and 8. They're vague, and one says it "has already become my default video app"; this is a photo app. These are probably not written by real users. Inference.
Who makes it: a company that borrows names for a living
The developer is registered as MA CLOTHING LLC, with a registered-agent address in Sheridan, Wyoming, and a UK phone number. Its other Play apps all carry someone else's name: Doubao (ByteDance's Doubao, 1.4 pts), Halide (the pro iOS camera), Toonsquid (iOS animation tool, 1.1 pts), Collanote, Scanner Pro, and "Qwein : Chat with Qwen 3.6". Its site, macloapps.com, calls itself a studio doing "ASO and monetization" and claims 150 launches and $23M in revenue generated.
The playbook is clear: find a name that's hot on iPhone but absent on Android, then ship a similar-feature app under that name on Play and catch the search traffic. Dazz Cam is the biggest result of that playbook so far. They've already got a second same-name package ready, which suggests they know the name could be taken away at any time.
Who's fighting over the same people
The "Dazz for Android" gap is no secret, and people have been going after it for seven years, each in their own way:
| Who | How they're going after it | Scale (Google Play, 11-06) |
|---|---|---|
| OldRoll(2020) | Own brand, long-running retro camera | 40.7M installs, +107k in 7 days |
| ProCCD(2022) | Own brand, CCD-focused | 23M installs, +130k in 7 days |
| Dazzil Cam(2020) | Early name-borrower, using a variant name | 20.5M installs, +27k in 7 days |
| Kapi Cam(2024) | Recruits influencers on Instagram, calling itself a "Dazz alternative" | 17.7M installs, +260k in 7 days |
| Vintage Film Camera - Digicam(2025-07) | New app with the same features | 5.35M installs, +140k in 7 days |
| A string of com.dazzcam.* throwaway packages | "Guide"-style apps whose listings say "not a camera app" | Very small |
| dazzcam.app, rumicam, sensepose | Web SEO content titled "Dazz Cam Android alternative" that funnels people to their own app | Not verified |
This table shows two things. Retro film cameras are a mature tens-of-millions category on Play, with the leaders holding their spots for five or six years. And the ones that actually scaled (OldRoll, ProCCD, Kapi) all have their own names; the name-borrowers either plateau at tens of millions of installs or, like MA CLO, ramp fast without knowing how long it will last.
If it were you
Bottom line: Don't copy this one. The name is borrowed, and it disappears the moment the real Dazz files a complaint or Google's impersonation policy catches it. Meanwhile "give Android users a Dazz-style camera" is already being built by four or five tens-of-millions apps. What's worth learning is how they find opportunities, not the app itself.
Good fit for: A 1–2 person team that has shipped utility or camera apps on Play and understands store search optimization, and wants a systematic way to find gaps; or creators who speak Portuguese, Spanish, or Indonesian and can make local short-form video.
Bad fit for: Anyone who wants to copy this, shipping under someone else's exact name (trademark and Play's impersonation policy both apply, and a banned account takes down every other app on the same developer account too); or anyone planning a generic retro camera on Play to go head-to-head with OldRoll and Kapi.
How to do it: Treat "hot on iPhone, missing on Android" as a repeatable topic-selection method. Scan App Store charts across storefronts for apps with lots of ratings and high rank whose developers have no Android version. Then search Play for that name and check whether the top results are a pile of low-quality name-borrowers. If they are, the search demand exists and nobody is serving it. Build a same-category app under your own name, and openly use words like "XX style" or "alternative" in the store title and description. Using Dazz as the example, don't build the Nth generic film camera. Go for a narrow angle Kapi-type apps haven't nailed: say, only the effects that made Dazz famous (date stamps, early digital compact cameras, flash), and give a few cameras free from day one. The one-star reviews from Brazil make it clear what happens when people install and find everything costs money. They leave immediately.
How to get users: Store search as the base. Then borrow Kapi's playbook: find TikTok creators teaching "how to get Dazz effects on Android" in Brazil, the Philippines, and Mexico (accounts like @vannysouzatech, with clips in the hundreds of thousands of views), since their audience is already asking "what app is that?" in the comments. Write comparison pages titled along the lines of "Dazz Cam for Android" to catch long-tail search. rumicam and sensepose are already doing this, which is a sign people are searching for it.
How long the window lasts: There's no hard deadline on this specific gap, but two things could close it at any time: the real Dazz shipping an Android version, or Google clearing out the name-borrowing apps. The topic-selection method itself isn't time-sensitive and can be used indefinitely.
What would prove this read wrong: ① Over 30 days both MA CLO Dazz Cam listings are still up, still getting 20k+ daily installs, and haven't been renamed, meaning Play barely enforces against this kind of impersonation and the search-capture window is longer than it looks; ② the real Dazz ships an Android version in the first half of 2027, which would take all the search traffic away from the alternatives and leave only the own-brand veterans; ③ its Brazil Top Grossing rank drops out of the top 100 after the paid push ends, showing those 640k installs mostly didn't turn into money and borrowing the name doesn't even work as a short-term business.

Why Dazz Cam (com.vintage.camera.pro, MA CLO APPS) showed up
Bottom line: It's a name-borrowing version of the iOS hit Dazz Cam on Google Play. The real Dazz Cam (DAZZ PTE. LTD., launched 2018) is iOS-only, and Android users have been searching "Dazz Cam for Android" the whole time. MA CLO APPS shipped under the identical name "Dazz Cam" and now ranks #1 for "dazz cam" on Play. It gets there through store search capture plus simultaneous chart pushes across several countries, not through the product itself. Rating: 2.7, and the developer behind it has a whole portfolio of the same kind of name-borrowing apps (Doubao, Halide, Bear, Toonsquid, Powtoon…).

2. Competitors: who else is doing the same thing
The original: Dazz Cam - Vintage Camera (DAZZ PTE. LTD., App Store id 1422471180,2018-08-17). iOS only. China store 1.18M ratings, +3,255 over the last 7 days; US store 117k ratings, Brazil 132k. Charted #6–13 in the photo free chart in India, the Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia and other stores (appstore library). The official site dazz.ltd only lists iOS. The rumicam.app blog says: “Dazz Cam is an iOS-only app… no official Android version.” Reddit r/DazzCam keeps getting posts like “For Android??”, “why android is not available”, and “Could Dazz Cam finally come to Android with Android 17?”
Vintage film cameras on Play (same category), data from the googleplay library:
- OldRoll (accordion, 2020): 40.7M installs, +107k over the last 7 days
- ProCCD (cerdillac, 2022): 23M installs, +130k over the last 7 days
- Dazzil Cam: Film & CCD Retro (DZ Film Cam, 2020): 20.5M installs, +27k over the last 7 days. This one also rides the Dazz name, just five or six years earlier.
- Kapi Cam - Y2K & CCD Camera (Sensevideo, 2024): 17.7M installs, +260k over the last 7 days. Someone on Instagram promotes it as “the Dazz Cam alternative.”
- Vintage Film Camera - Digicam (ZANKHANA, 2025-07): 5.35M installs, +140k over the last 7 days
- Dazz Cam - CCD, Y2K Filter (Kyeong Ah, com.analogcamera.film, 2024-09): 59k installs
- Huji Cam, VSCO, Photon Camera (Hinnka, 2026-12.8M, +340k over the last 7 days)
- Searching “dazz cam” on Play also turns up a string of small clones: com.dazzcam.majid1, com.dazzcam.rubel2, com.dazzcam.rasheed1 (these are “guide” apps whose listings say they are not a camera), Dazzle Cam, and Dazzix Cam on APKPure (com.DDaz.CCam).
- On the web: dazzcam.app calls itself the “Dazz Cam Official App” but actually sends Android users to another app, OMO Roll. sensepose.com (2026-10-12) and rumicam.app publish SEO articles titled “Dazz Cam Android alternative” to funnel traffic to their own apps.
Bottom line: functionally it has nothing exclusive. Vintage film / CCD cameras are a mature, tens-of-millions-install category on Play, and the top apps have been around for five or six years. Its only real edge is that its store name is identical to the original's.
3. Growth tactics (evidence)
- Name piggybacking + store search capture (confirmed)
- The app is literally called “Dazz Cam,” letter for letter the same as the iOS original. 2026-11-06 Searching “dazz cam” on the Play web search (hl=en, gl=us), it comes up #1. #2 is the same developer's second package com.retro.film.studio (also called Dazz Cam, listed 10-30, already at 2,395 installs). #3 is the older Dazzil Cam.
- Instagram's topic hub “Dazz Cam On Android” states outright: “The main app by MA CLO APPS offers vintage cameras like GX 400 and DATE 90… it had 570 thousand installs as of October 2026.” The platform's own generated summary already presents it as “the Android version of Dazz.”
- Taiwanese Threads user @yun_1220_yun posted a screenshot asking “Both are called Dazz Cam, both from MA CLO APPS, which one works better?” That shows users really are looking for it as the official app.
- Where the demand comes from: Dazz has long had “digicam / FXN R / date stamp” photo-sharing content on TikTok and Instagram. Android users who see it want to download it but can't. Instagram also has accounts like @shuttersouls posting “Dazz Cam For Android?” reels and asking people to DM for the app. The original's social buzz is funneling free traffic to the name-copying clone.
- The developer is a bulk name-copier (confirmed): every app MA CLO APPS has on Play uses the name of a well-known iOS-only or non-Android product. Doubao (ByteDance's Doubao name, 1.4–1.5 rating), Halide (iOS pro camera), Bear (iOS notes), Toonsquid (iOS animation), Powtoon, Collanote, Reclaim Ai / Claim Calendar Ai, Scanner Pro, Veeoo. Its site macloapps.com presents itself as an outsourced “ASO & Monetization” firm, claiming “150+ launches, $23M+ revenue,” and its client testimonials look templated.
- The early reviews look self-seeded (speculative): the 3 reviews pinned on the listing all date from 9-06 to 9-08, and they share the same generic praise. One says it “has become my default video recorder,” even though this is a photo app. The rating histogram shows the 2, 3 and 4 star counts exactly equal over a long stretch ([214, 35, 35, 35, 142]), which isn't natural either.
- The recent volume may be bought or faked (speculative, not verified):
- It added 179k installs in 7 days but only 66 more ratings, 5–20 times lower than comparable apps.
- The 13-country peak and synchronized fall; daily installs of 3–60k, yet it never cracked the top 200 of the photo chart in big markets like the US, India or Indonesia. Either the volume comes from countries we don't track, or it's low-quality installs that carry little weight in rankings.
- Meta / Google ad libraries don't track this app, so not finding ads ≠ no ads.
- Monetization: no ads, in-app purchases of $6.99–$19.99, Brazil photo top grossing #46–56. Revenue is high enough to chart, but with 2.7 one-star ratings and 1 at 46%, many people installed it, found it wasn't the Dazz they wanted or that it costs money, and left.
4. Why it charted
- The gap: the original Dazz is a global hit (1.18M ratings in the China store) and has gone 7 years without an Android version. Reddit, IG and TikTok keep carrying “Dazz for Android” demand. Play doesn't police iOS trademarks, so whoever takes the name first gets the traffic.
- Identical name, #1 in search: the other copycats are “Dazzil,” “Dazzle,” or “Dazz Cam Vintage Camera + guide.” This one is called plain “Dazz Cam,” with an icon and screenshots of a proper camera interface, so it landed #1 in Play search.
- The product itself is passable: the listing is professional (27 cameras, 22 color presets, originals kept for re-development, fully on-device processing, no data collected), so it keeps some users and earns some money. But it isn't why it took off.
- The November surge was a push (multiple countries peaking together, then falling). Whether it was paid acquisition or fake installs is not verified.
5. Differentiation
Compared with the original Dazz: it's on Android and the original isn't. That's the only real difference, and it comes from using the original's name, not from the product. Compared with similar apps like OldRoll, ProCCD and Kapi: functionality is nearly identical, and its only difference is the name and search position. So the differentiator is the name. That really is why it broke out, but the advantage isn't durable or legitimate. If Dazz files a trademark complaint or Google removes it under its impersonation policy, it's gone. MA CLO has already put up a second package, com.retro.film.studio, as a backup, suggesting they expect this too.
6. Visibility / copycats
- Revenue isn't public, and no media outlet or X account has written about it (x-radar found no relevant tweets for “dazz cam” in the last 60 days).
- But the “Dazz for Android” gap itself is public and everyone is chasing it: Dazzil Cam (2020), Kyeong Ah's Dazz Cam (2024), a string of com.dazzcam.* guide clones, and SEO capture sites dazzcam.app / sensepose / rumicam. What's actually new is one thing: taking the exact name and holding #1 in Play search.
- Copycats: MA CLO's own second package com.retro.film.studio (10-30); similar Dazz-named clones are listed above.
7. Takeaways
- Find iOS hits that have gone years without an Android version, build the same functionality on Play, and capture the spillover search traffic. The approach can be copied, but using the exact same name runs into trademark issues and Play's impersonation policy. The legitimate version is “XX alternative for Android,” paired with SEO blog posts targeting long-tail keywords (rumicam, sensepose and OMO Roll all do this).
- Search demand for iOS-only tools and camera hits on Android is going unmet. You can systematically scan the appstore and googleplay libraries to find these gaps.
8. Uncertain
- Where the 3–60k daily installs in November came from (paid acquisition, incentivized installs, fake installs, or organic traffic from a specific country) is unverified. Ad libraries don't track it.
- Actual revenue. The revenue threshold for Brazil top grossing rank is not high.
- Whether the original Dazz has filed complaints, and whether the app will be removed.
