Two birthdays make one full moon: how a love-test app with 250k installs and zero ratings was "bought" into existence

What it is You enter two people's birthdays, it checks whether the moon on the night each was born can line up into a full moon, then adds a few couple quizzes and ranking mini-games. An entertainment app that makes money only from ads.

Why it took off The mechanic is the "birthday moon-phase matching" that TikTok made popular 2023 years ago. A similar app, June, has already reached 1.5M installs on Play. Vionyx copied it, bought cheap installs in lower-cost countries to hit #13 on the UAE Entertainment chart, and let ads cover the cost.

CHow you could follow it Don't build a seventh copycat. Either study it as a case of picking a product through paid acquisition (find a hook in an old TikTok trend, check whether someone is already buying ads on it before building a variant), or turn the same "two moons make a full moon" idea into a web product selling custom keepsake prints, timed for Valentine's Day.

C tier: the demand is real but the trend peaked three years ago, free web versions are everywhere, and on Play five or six Vietnamese studios are already buying ads on the same mechanic with zero differentiation. You can learn the product-selection and ad playbook from it, but following this one app isn't worth it. Few people know about it yet

Moonly Match: Love Test is a Google Play app where you enter two birthdays and see whether the moons from the nights each person was born can line up into a full moon. Six weeks after launch it has 250k installs and not a single rating. No one discovered it. A Vietnamese studio bought it in, copying a playbook that someone else had already proven. Anyone who wants to follow it should first decide whether they're following a mechanic or a paid-acquisition business.

A 38k-view video, and a format that had already peaked

In Oct 14, TikTok user @joanajamshidi posted a video with a single caption: "search 'moon phase' + your birthday to find yours". Go search "moon phase + your birthday" and see which one you are. By early November it had about 38k views. On Nov 3 and 4, an account selling decorative prints, @lqyu_773, posted two videos in a row: "your birthday moon + their birthday moon = a full moon", gold for the first person, silver for the second.

This isn't a new idea. Around 2023 March, the TikTok "Moon Phase / Moon Birthday" effect took off: if two people's birth-day moon phases complement each other and make a full moon when put together, you're "soulmates." Farmers' Almanac's hashtag clocked over 430M views, and Teen Vogue, Today and Mashable all covered it. People keep coming back to search for it every year, and free web tools like moonsoulmate.com and moonagetoday.org are easy to find: enter two dates, get a result.

Moonly Match just moves this into an app.

What it is

The store page is blunt: "Pick two dates, reveal two moon phases, see how your cosmic patterns fit together." Besides the moon phase comparison, it packs in a few similar things: couple compatibility tests, friendship tests, and couple ranking mini-games like "Who falls in love first? Who gets jealous easier? Who gives the best gifts?" Results come as nice cards you can save and share. The footer has a disclaimer: "For entertainment only, not a scientific measurement."

No in-app purchases, only ads (the Google Play page is labeled "Contains ads"). Version 1.0.3, privacy policy hosted on Google Sites. One person could build it in a few days.

Google Play installs and chart positions as of 11-06; data before mid-October is third-party estimates.

Daily installs went from about 4,000–5,000 in mid-October to over 10,000, up to 27,000 a day around 10-21–10-31, then fell back to about 6,000 a day in early November. This isn't a video going viral and a long tail trailing off. It's "ramp up, push harder, pull back."

The strangest part is the ratings: 250k installs and the rating count is empty, with 0 reviews. An app with that many organic users should have hundreds of ratings by now. It only charted in three countries (UAE, India, Saudi Arabia), all markets where installs are cheap and the entertainment category is easy to crack.

Where the users come from: bought, inferred

We haven't seen its ad creatives, so what follows is inference, but the evidence fits together and is hard to explain any other way:

  • Big install count, zero ratings: bought cheap traffic rarely comes back to leave a rating.
  • Charts only in cheap countries: #13 in UAE Entertainment needs only a few thousand installs a day (estimated). Once charted, it picks up some organic installs on top.
  • Stepped jumps, on the same days as sister apps: the same studio's budgeting app MoneyFlow went +172k over 7 days, and short-drama app DramaGo went +105k over 7 days, both jumping on 10-31 and 11-03. That looks like one acquisition team scaling up in sync.
  • Pure ad monetization: buying an install for a few to a dozen cents and running interstitial and rewarded ads around the result page to earn back the spread.

Searching TikTok for "moonly match" or "moon phase couple app" turned up no video promoting this app in the past 30 days; nobody discusses it on X, and no media has written about it. The moon phase trend on TikTok is the demand base, not its channel.

Who made it: an app factory

The developer entity is VIGLAFICO JOINT STOCK COMPANY, a Vietnamese company. The developer website points to vionyx.co, which describes itself as a "Missouri-registered mobile product studio." On Play, it has published apps under at least five Vietnamese entities, all with com.vionyx.* package names: 9, and in October alone it shipped short drama (DramaGo, DramaReels, DramaVibe, DramaBinge), budgeting (MoneyFlow, MoneyCove, Moni), and moon phase matching. Its website also lists tarot, AI chat, VPN, step counting, speaker cleaning, and pregnancy apps.

It has put out two apps for the same moon phase concept: 9-23's Moonly Match, and 10-11, which it published under another entity (VIONYX TECHNOLOGY JSC) as MoonPhase: Couple & Soulmate (11-06, around 50k installs, +40k over 7 days). One concept, multiple brands: a standard way for studios like this to dodge bans and test creatives.

Who it's copying: the pioneer, three months earlier and six times bigger

The first to really run was MoonPhase Match: Couple Test, from another Vietnamese company (VINH PHUC HIGH TECH JSC), launched in June 15. It passed 500k in August and a million in October. 11-06 has 1.51M installs, +132k over 7 days, and 693 ratings, and it also charted in the UAE, India and Singapore Entertainment charts. The two store descriptions use nearly identical copy. Vionyx followed after seeing it work.

And Moonly Match itself has been copied:

MoonPhase Match: Couple TestThe pioneer, launched 6-15, 1.51M installs

Love Test: Moonly Couple MatchName-jacking, with a "love filter" camera mode added
Love Test: Soulmate Match and othersGeneral love-test apps, tens of thousands of installs, charting in India
moonsoulmate.com and other web pagesFree, no install needed

At least five apps use the same concept; two copy or trade on its name directly. The name itself is borrowed too: there's an old moon phase app on Play, launched 2021 years ago, called Moonly (3.85M installs).

Differentiation is essentially zero. It worked by picking fast, buying traffic with careful math, and having many entities.

Where the money comes from

Ads only. Revenue isn't disclosed and nobody has posted about it. A pure entertainment test app people use once and leave won't have high lifetime value (LTV). Whether it breaks even depends entirely on the gap between acquisition cost and ad eCPM. Traffic was pulled in early November, which could mean the pool stopped paying off, or could just be a normal creative swap. From the outside, you can't tell.

The other money path isn't in the store. The endings of @lqyu_773's two videos say "search QingCozyPrints", which sells decorative prints showing a couple's birth-date moon phases. On Etsy, "couple moon phase print" is a whole category, with custom versions at $30 shipped free by the dozen. The same emotion is worth a few ad impressions in an app, but as an anniversary gift it's a sale of several dozen dollars.

If it were you

Verdict: C. You can learn a method for picking products and buying traffic from it, but this particular app isn't worth it. The concept peaked three years ago, free web versions are everywhere, and five or six Vietnamese studios are already buying traffic for the same concept on Play. You have nothing they don't have.

Who it suits: small teams already running "tool / entertainment app traffic arbitrage," with an AdMob account, the skill to run Google UAC, and the ability to work out the gap between CPI and eCPM. For you, this is just one more topic to test, one variant every week or two, a small budget aimed at the UAE, India, Saudi Arabia and Southeast Asia, and stop if it doesn't pay back.

Who it doesn't suit: anyone who can't run paid traffic and hopes content or store search will bring in organic installs (250k installs with zero ratings shows organic traffic is almost nonexistent); anyone who wants to build a subscription on it (one-time curiosity doesn't retain); anyone who wants to beat them with a "prettier moon phase test" (product quality isn't the deciding factor here).

How to do it: if you do touch this concept, don't make a seventh copy. Two directions are worth more. One: treat it as a lesson in picking traffic-driven products. Go through old viral TikTok trends and pick ones with simple input, shareable results, and replayability. Then check whether Play already shows someone running the stepped installs, zero ratings and cheap-country charting pattern. If so, the hook is buyable, so ship variants fast. Two: change how you get paid. Turn the same "two moons make a full moon" idea into a website where the result page sells a custom memento print or digital print (around $30 each on Etsy), timed for Valentine's Day.

How to get users: the app route is paid traffic, with Google UAC pushing cheap countries up the Entertainment charts. For the print route, use vertical TikTok videos along the lines of "your birthday moon + theirs = full moon" to sell, and put the shop name in captions like @lqyu_773 does. Add budget before anniversaries and Valentine's Day (inferred).

When to move: the app route has no hard deadline, but every week you wait is another clone. For the print route, you need to test creatives by mid-January 2027 to catch the February 14 window.

What would mean you read it wrong: ① If the pioneer, MoonPhase Match, or Moonly Match is still adding over 100k installs a week after November and starts collecting hundreds or thousands of real ratings, it has organic retention and not just bought traffic, so reassess. ② If installs drop to zero and the app is delisted once Vionyx stops buying, the traffic didn't pay back, so don't follow the paid route either. ③ If TikTok releases an official moon phase effect and the hashtag blows up again, the window reopens, and whoever moves fast can catch some organic traffic.

Why Moonly Match: Love Test (com.vionyx.moonly.match.love.test) got traction

Google Play / Entertainment / VIGLAFICO JOINT STOCK COMPANY (actual operator is the Vionyx studio, vionyx.co) / store launch 2026-09-23 / research date 2026-11-06

Bottom line

It didn't break out on its own product or content. It was built by Vietnamese utility-app studio Vionyx using a "portfolio + copycat" playbook: it took the "birthday moon phase pairing" trend that went viral on TikTok 2023 years ago (two people's birthday moon phases combine into a full moon = soulmates) and turned it into a simple ad-only app. It followed MoonPhase Match: Couple Test (1.5M installs), an already-proven competitor, used paid acquisition (most likely Google UAC) to buy cheap traffic (UAE, India, Saudi Arabia), and recouped through ad revenue. Basically no differentiation; it ranked on distribution tactics.

1. Data

Our library (Google Play, as of 2026-11-06)

  • Lifetime global installs 255,691; 7 new installs over 109,929 days; 10-29 is 145,762.
  • Installs rose in steps: 10-31 +54,908, 11-03 +42,666, 11-05 +12,355, with 0 in between (the store updates counts every few days).
  • Rating count is NULL, review sample 0: 250k installs with no ratings is very abnormal. Apps with organic users have hundreds of ratings by now. This is a classic sign of paid or low-quality traffic.
  • ad_supported = True, offers_iap = False: monetized purely through ads, no in-app purchases. Version 1.0.3.
  • Charts (chart_rank): 10-29 is the peak. #199 overall in UAE Apps, #13 in UAE Entertainment Free, #59 in India Entertainment, #67 in Saudi Entertainment; it then slid, 11-06 at #35 in UAE Entertainment, #155 in India, and out of the top 200 in Saudi. It only charted in these 2–3 countries.
  • The AppBrain page (search snippet) says its best rank was "#3 in India Top New Free Entertainment".

Install curve since launch (app_day_ext, AppstoreSpy estimate)

  • 10-06 about 5,480 installs → 10-13 about 25,519 → 10-20 about 54,110 → 10-24 about 116,411 → 10-27 about 145,758 → 10-31 200,670 → 11-05 255,691.
  • Daily adds went from 4–6k/day in mid-October to 1.1–27k/day around 10-21–10-31, then fell back to about 6k/day in early November. A typical "open spend → boost → cut" paid curve, not a long tail from content going viral.

Bottom line: this concept went viral on TikTok 2023 years ago, web tools are a dime a dozen, and on Play MoonPhase Match already hit 1.5M installs back in June. Moonly Match has no unique edge.

3. Growth tactics

  1. Paid acquisition (highly likely, but no creatives directly seen)
    • Evidence: 250k installs with zero ratings and zero reviews; charted only in UAE / India / Saudi Arabia, where CPI is cheap and category charts are easy to reach; installs rose in steps, boosted late October, cut in November; ad-only monetization with no IAP. This is the classic arbitrage model: buy cheap installs, recoup through ad eCPM.
    • Our googleads library only tracks a list of winners, and Vionyx / Moonly isn't on it, so not finding anything doesn't mean they didn't spend. Creatives not directly verified.
  2. Studio portfolio + multiple shell entities
    • vionyx.co calls itself a "Missouri-registered mobile product studio" (Vionyx Technologies LLC), but the developer entities on Play are all Vietnamese companies: VIGLAFICO JSC, VIONYX TECHNOLOGY JSC, VINAINCON CONSULTANT, CONG TY TNHH KNP VIET NAM, PHUC KHANG MATERIAL TRADING. Package names are all com.vionyx.*, and developer sites all point to vionyx.co.
    • The library shows 11 apps under the same domain. From 9 through October they shipped short drama (DramaGo / DramaReels / DramaVibe / DramaBinge), expense tracking (MoneyFlow / MoneyCove / Moni), and moon pairing (Moonly Match / MoonPhase Couple). The official site also lists tarot, AI chat, VPN, step counters, horn-cleaner apps, pregnancy apps, and more.
    • Same curve: MoneyFlow +172k over 7 days, DramaGo +105k over 7 days, with Moonly Match's +110k on nearly the same rhythm, jumping on the same dates (10-31, 11-03). Clearly one media-buying team scaling several apps at once. Total installs across the developer's library: about 506k (data card) / about 970k by domain.
    • The same concept run by two or three entities (Moonly Match + MoonPhase Couple + a suspected copy with a golden package name) is standard Vietnamese studio practice for dodging bans and testing creatives.
  3. Copying a proven hit: MoonPhase Match launched in June, passed 500k by August, and passed 1M in October. Vionyx launched Moonly Match at 9-23 and then another at 10-11. The timing shows they copied after seeing others succeed.
  4. TikTok / creators: TikHub searches for "moonly match", "moon phase couple app", and "moon phase soulmate" over the last 30 days found no videos promoting this app (the @moonlydrama_ca account that came up is an unrelated short-drama account). Moon phase content has stayed popular on TikTok (e.g. @joanajamshidi's "search moon phase + your birthday" with 38k views 10-14), which shows demand for the concept itself, but it is not this app's direct channel. Not found.
  5. X / press / SEO: x-radar returned 0 posts for "moon phase compatibility" over 60 days; no press has covered this app; only auto-generated listing pages from Softonic, CNET Download, and AppBrain.
  6. Store search: the name and description are stuffed with keywords like "Love Test / Moon Phase Match / Couple / Compatibility", and Google results include an organic entry point with utm_term=moonly match love test app. But zero ratings suggest organic search isn't the main driver. Partial contribution, not quantified.

4. Why it made the list

  • The demand already exists: "birthday moon phases make a full moon" was a viral TikTok trend 2023 years ago (430M+ views, covered by Teen Vogue, Today, and Mashable). People still come back to search for it every year, and young couples, crushes, and friends naturally want to share the result.
  • The gimmick has already been proven by others: MoonPhase Match: Couple Test ran for 4 months and hit 1.5M installs, showing this hook can work on Google Play paid acquisition.
  • Cost is minimal: enter two dates → compute the moon phases → output a result card, plus a few couple Q&A / ranking games. One person can build it in a few days; the privacy policy is hosted on Google Sites.
  • Paid acquisition + ad arbitrage: installs are cheap in the Middle East / India, and the Entertainment category chart is easy to crack (#13 in the UAE Entertainment chart needs only a few thousand installs a day). Once charted, it picks up some organic installs too. Ads (interstitial / rewarded) monetize around the results page.
  • Portfolio spreads the risk: the same studio runs 10+ apps across 5 developer entities at once. If one doesn't perform, they kill it.

5. Differentiation

Almost none. Compared with the pioneer MoonPhase Match, its selling points (moon-phase comparison + love test + couple ranking games + shareable result cards) are nearly identical. Against web tools / TikTok filters, it's just "on your phone." The name piggybacks on Moonly, an established moon-phase app. Differentiation isn't why it took off; distribution is (paid acquisition + portfolio + copying trending picks).

6. Buzz / visibility

  • Revenue isn't public: no TrustMRR listing, no founder sharing numbers, 0 discussion on X, and no media has written about the app itself. → Hardly anyone knows about it yet.
  • But the niche is already crowded in the Vietnamese / low-cost studio circles: at least 5 apps use the same mechanic, and at least 2 of them directly copy or ride the "Moonly Match" name.

7. What's worth borrowing

  • Picking method: from old viral TikTok mechanics, choose ones with "simple input, shareable result, infinitely replayable." First check whether anyone on Play has run paid acquisition successfully (stepped install curve, zero ratings but high installs), then quickly clone a variant.
  • Playbook: ad-only monetization + paid acquisition in cheap countries to climb category charts + a multi-entity portfolio. The profit here lives in the gap between eCPM and CPI; the barrier is ad buying ability, not the product.
  • What this means for us: for apps like this, the "launch" is mainly an acquisition signal, not a demand signal. When using install counts for recall, "250k installs / zero ratings / ads-only / charted only in ae-in-sa" can serve as identification rules for "paid acquisition arbitrage."

VIII. Unknowns

  • I didn't directly see Vionyx's ad creatives (they're not in the googleads / metaads lists), so the paid acquisition is inferred from the data shape. Whether the channel is Google UAC or Meta / Unity / AppLovin is unverified.
  • Whether ad monetization actually pays back (ROAS) is unknown; the decline after early November could be from reduced spend.
  • Whether com.golden.moonlymatch.lovetest is Vionyx's own backup or a third-party copy is unverified; whether an iOS version exists is unverified (the iTunes API was unavailable that day).
  • The Play launch date may have been reset by a storefront expansion, but the AppstoreSpy curve starts at 10-05, which matches the 9-23 launch.
