The "Ideogram" on Android isn't Ideogram: one brand gap, 29k installs in two months

What it is An Android AI text-to-image app that borrows the name "Ideogram", lets you put text in images, won't generate anything without a subscription, and has in-app purchases of $19.99–$99.99.

Why it took off The official Ideogram has no Android version, and an earlier third-party app with the same name, June, was delisted. This one picked up the search term "ideogram" on Play. On top of that, installs rose in waves from what appears to be cheap paid acquisition in low-cost markets like Vietnam and Nigeria.

CHow you could follow it Don't chase this name. You can borrow the method of finding gaps where big brands only have iOS / web and no Android version, and build a legitimate niche tool, such as text-in-image posters / logos, acquiring users through use-case keywords in the store.

Grade C: there's something to learn from the tactic, but following it isn't worth it. The word "Ideogram" is already crowded by three or four apps that rely on borrowing the name, and they could be wiped out at any time by a trademark complaint or an official Android release. 29k installs with 0 ratings shows users don't stay, and legitimate text-in-image generation is squeezed by free offerings from Canva and Gemini. Few people know about it yet

The official Ideogram only has web and iPhone apps. In Sep 4, a developer called NexGen Ai Tools listed an image-generation app titled "Ideogram" on Google Play. In two months it got about 29k installs and ranks first when you search "ideogram" on Play. But it has zero reviews and zero ratings, and you must subscribe before generating anything. This isn't a product that broke out; it's an empty slot ("big brand has no Android version") that someone grabbed. Below: how the gap came about, where the traffic came from, what can be learned, and why following it isn't recommended.

Someone on YouTube is teaching "how to download Ideogram on Android"

Ideogram is an AI image company known for getting text right inside images. In 2026 Jun 3 it released an open-weight model, 4.0, followed by 4.5. AI tool accounts on TikTok pushed it in a wave: nathanhodgson.ai's "This new open source AI tool is insane" got 25k views, benkaluza.studio called it "one of the most underrated image generation models", and German and Portuguese accounts were also talking about it.

Some people who watched the videos and wanted to download it were on Android phones. The official app is on the App Store (listed July 2024, 2,693 ratings, 4.8 stars, 11-06), but not on Play. YouTube has several "How to Download Ideogram AI App on Android" videos, which openly say "IdeoGram app is currently available on iPhone but not on the Android app PlayStore". The demand was always there; the shelf was empty.

Even more coincidentally, the earlier third-party app occupying the name, "Ideogram AI" (com.hkamor.ai.ideogram), reached 110k installs and stayed on Play for 7 months before being delisted in June 2026 (AppBrain). Two and a half months later, NexGen's "Ideogram" went live and filled the spot.

What it is

A very ordinary text-to-image app: write a sentence, pick a style (cinematic photo, watercolor, Bauhaus, sticker, retro poster…), choose an aspect ratio, and get an image. The store description copies Ideogram's signature selling point: "Unlike most image generation tools, it can put genuinely clear, readable text in images".

No real connection to the official product. You can't generate anything without subscribing, and in-app purchases run from $19.99 to $99.99 per tier (Google Play, 11-06). Version 1.0.1, updated only once since listing, in Sep 5. The developer page lists a Paris address, a UAE phone number, and a gmail address, and the privacy policy sits on a generic template site. The same account also has a 2022-year-old French whiteboard app, and this account has carried about 7 AI wrapper apps in total, roughly 60k installs combined (AppBrain). It looks like an old account repurposed for AI wrappers (inference, unverified).

Where the traffic came from: search terms + waves of paid acquisition

Search is certain. In Nov 6, searching "ideogram" on the Play US store put it first. Its title is exactly the brand name, and its icon and screenshots are image-generation samples. Users think they're installing the official Android version.

Paid acquisition is inferred. Looking at the install curve (third-party estimates from AppstoreSpy, daily Google Play installs starting 10-29):

TimelineTotal installsWhat happened
09-17About 1,200Two weeks after listing
10-02About 10.5kSteady rise from late September
10-04About 16.5kTwo days about +6,000
10-08About 21.2kAbout +4,500 in a single day
10-21About 22.3kOnly 20–90 installs a day in between
11-04About 29kTwo more waves at the end of October, 7 days +4,289

Traffic from search should be flat, but this line surges and then barely moves. It has only charted in two places: Oct 29 Vietnam Lifestyle Top Free at #178, and Nov 3 and 4 Nigeria in the same chart at #196, both places where acquisition is cheap. With 29k installs and 0 ratings, the most likely explanation is app ads or incentivized installs in low-cost markets, and users who installed mostly didn't keep using it (inference; it can't be found in the ad libraries).

Searching "ideogram app" on TikTok returns only official Ideogram content, and nobody mentions this Android app. Nobody on X in the last 90 days mentioned it either. No content, no word of mouth.

Who it's competing with

First, those competing for the same name. This keyword is already crowded by several apps:

  • Swiftin's "Ideogram" (com.text.vision.studio): listed in October, 100+ installs, also titled "Ideogram", and now ranks second in "ideogram" search. Its copy is far more earnest than NexGen's: 33 styles, 8 aspect ratios, "change text without changing layout" (you like the layout and just want a few words swapped, one tap), no repeated charges when offline, supports 11 languages, and it also requires a subscription.
  • Ideo AI (Devgoder Studios): the package name already includes ideogram, 100k+ installs, 2.2 stars, and a negative review says "no free quota, you have to pay 3 euros before you can try it".
  • GPT Image 2 (Deep Origin): the package name is ideagram, and it originally came in chasing this name, then renamed to ride GPT Image. 276k installs, 1.8 stars.

Next, those doing the same thing. Text-to-image and text-on-poster apps are among the most crowded categories on Play: Canva has 790M installs, Google Gemini 2.5B, both with free built-in image generation; ImagineArt, WOMBO Dream, and Wonder each have tens of millions; new image-generation wrappers this year routinely reach millions, e.g. Muselab AI, listed in April, is already at 5.36M and still adding +920k in the last 7 days. Next to them, 29k is a rounding error.

How much this path can earn and how long it lasts

It has never charted in any Top Grossing list, its revenue isn't visible from outside, and based on 29k installs, 0 ratings, and hard subscription paywalls, revenue should be very small (inference). The logic of the approach: use the brand name to feed on search, use high-priced subscriptions to recover costs quickly from the small number of users who installed by mistake, and switch to the next app whenever one gets removed.

Lifespan is measured in months. The previous occupant lasted 7 months; a single trademark complaint from Ideogram would take this app down. And Ideogram itself could release an Android version at any time, at which point this search term goes straight back to the real owner.

If it were you

The bottom line: don't chase the "Ideogram" name. The spot is already crowded by three or four apps, and could be cleared at any time by a trademark complaint or an official Android release. What's worth taking is the method of finding gaps where big brands lack an Android version.

Who it suits: teams already doing AI tool go-global, with an existing image-generation backend and subscription template, who can ship a new app within a few days. For them, "find popular AI products that only have iOS / web → check whether the same-name search results on Play are empty or only junk" is a cheap way to pick topics.

Who it doesn't suit: anyone trying to build a product that lasts. Users acquired by borrowing a name don't stick around (29k installs and 0 ratings prove it), the brand can wipe it out with one complaint, and the bigger it gets, the more dangerous it becomes.

How to do it: If you want to borrow this idea, build a legitimate product under a real name. The most ready-made niche is "text-in-image posters / logos / product labels." Swiftin's copy about "change the text without changing the layout" and its aspect ratios by use case are clearer than "yet another image-gen app." Put the use in the title (e.g. "Poster & Logo Maker with Text"), and in the description you can state facts like "supports Ideogram-style text rendering"; don't pass yourself off as official.

How to get users: Play Store search is the main channel. Build the store page around use-case terms like "poster maker," "logo with text," "flyer." Low-cost-region app ads can be used to cold-start and get you onto a category chart, but only scale paid spend once payback looks good. Riding on other brands' names is not on the table.

How soon: There's no window to speak of for the name-riding route. It can close at any time. A legitimate text-design tool isn't on a clock, but Canva and Gemini keep getting better at text in generated images and are free, so the later you enter, the harder it gets.

What would show you're wrong: If NexGen or Swiftin's "Ideogram" apps are still alive by early next year, have charted in several countries' top grossing, and are collecting real reviews, the brand gap is bigger than it looks and the platform isn't policing it, so the approach deserves more serious work. Conversely, if they get delisted before year end, or Ideogram ships an official Android app, the gap is gone for good.

Where users come from
  • Verified Play Store search + brand-name piggybacking: The title is just "Ideogram"; 2026-11-06 Searching "ideogram" in the US Play store ranks it #1, "ideogram ai" ranks it #2; the description lifts Ideogram's "clear, readable text in images" pitch
  • Verified Brand-heat spillover + a gap left by the previous holder's delisting: Ideogram 4.0 was open-sourced in 2026-06, and AI tool accounts on TikTok are promoting it (nathanhodgson.ai 25k views, etc.); YouTube has tutorials titled "Ideogram is iPhone-only, how do I get it on Android"; the earlier squatter com.hkamor.ai.ideogram 2026-06 was delisted (AppBrain)
  • Inferred Paid acquisition / incentivized installs (low-cost regions): Installs come in pulses (about 6,000 over two days, about 4,500 on a single day, otherwise 20–90 per day), it has only appeared at the tail of the Vietnam / Nigeria category charts, 29k installs with 0 ratings; ad libraries aren't tracking it, so there's no direct evidence
  • Inferred Developer portfolio / aged account: The same developer ID also publishes Speed Draw, a French drawing-board app that is 2022 years old (different email); AppBrain says the account has 7 apps totaling about 60k installs
  • Inferred TikTok / X / media: A TikHub search for "ideogram app" turns up no videos about this app; x-radar shows 90 posts in 0 days

Why Ideogram (com.visual.image.generator, NexGen Ai Tools) got traction

2026-11-06. Data: googleplay library (app_snap / app_day_ext / chart_rank, historical estimates from AppstoreSpy labeled), Google Play web pages (read via Jina), TikHub, x-radar.

One line

This is an Android AI image-gen wrapper that rides the "Ideogram" brand name. Official Ideogram only has iOS and web, no Android app. It ranks #1 for "ideogram" on Play search, and installs come in pulses: a jump of several thousand over a few days, then almost nothing, much like paid acquisition switched on and off in bursts in low-cost regions. It has 29k installs, but its rating and review counts are 0, and it has only appeared at the tail of the Vietnam and Nigeria Lifestyle free charts. Image generation requires a subscription, with in-app purchases of $19.99–$99.99. This isn't a product that broke out. It's a small example of a "big brand lacks an Android version" gap being grabbed.

1. Data

  • Installs (AppstoreSpy estimates, googleplay.app_day_ext): 1,173 (09-17) → 2,992 (09-19) → 6,904 (09-24) → 10,472 (10-02) → 16,486 (10-04) → 21,158 (10-08) → 22,263 (10-21) → 24,338 (10-28) → 29,344 (11-04). Our own snapshots: 24,338 (10-29) → 28,627 (11-03 / 11-04), up 7 over 4,289 days.
  • Curve shape: several pulses. 10-03 to 10-04 over two days added about 6,000; 10-08 added about 4,500 in a single day; 10-25 to 10-27 added about 2,300; 10-29 to 11-04 added about 5,000. Between pulses it only gets 20–90 installs a day (10-05 to 10-24). Organic search traffic should be smoother; this on-off shape looks more like spend running in bursts.
  • Rating null, 0 reviews (app_snap). The store page shows "10K+" and has no rating section. 29k installs with 0 ratings is very unusual on Play, meaning most installers basically didn't use it, or the traffic is low quality / incentivized.
  • Charts (chart_rank): 10-29 Vietnam Lifestyle free chart #178; 11-03, 11-04 Nigeria Lifestyle free chart #196. Never charted on any overall or top-grossing chart.
  • Monetization: the store description reads "Generating images requires a subscription"; no subscription, no image generation, a hard paywall. iap_range is $19.99–$99.99 per item. Version 1.0.1, updated only once, on 2026-09-05, since launch.
  • Developer: the Play page lists CHAIB HIND, an address at 16 rue Vandrezanne 75013 Paris, phone +971 (UAE), email [email protected], and the privacy policy sits on a generic template site, app-legal-center.web.app. The same developer ID also publishes Speed Draw (com.tableaublanc.tableaublanc, 19.7k installs, email [email protected], different from the current one), a French drawing-board app that is 2022 years old. AppBrain says the account has 7 apps totaling about 60k installs (Dola Ai, Cocopix, etc., per the search snippet at appbrain.com/dev/NexGen+Ai+Tools). Speculation: this developer account is a purchased aged account, or an old account renamed (a 2022-year-old French drawing-board account renamed "NexGen Ai Tools" to run an AI wrapper). Not verified.

2. Competitors

Apps that grabbed the "Ideogram" name directly (all third-party; official has no Android version):

  • Official Ideogram (ideogram.ai): web plus an iOS app. 2026-06-03 released the open-weights Ideogram 4.0, followed by 4.5 and vector models (tech-insider.org, creator videos on TikTok). No official app turns up on Play. Several YouTube videos titled "How to Download Ideogram AI App on Android" say outright "IdeoGram app is currently available on iPhone but not on the Android app PlayStore," so people have been searching for this for a while.
  • Ideogram AI (com.hkamor.ai.ideogram): the previous holder of this name. AppBrain shows "no longer on Google Play. It was there for 7 months, until June 2026. It had 110 thousand installs." It was delisted in June, and two and a half months later NexGen's same-name app went up on 09-04 to fill the slot.
  • Ideo AI - Image Generator Art (com.devgoder.ideogram_ai_image_generator, Devgoder Studios): package name contains ideogram, 100k+ installs, 262 reviews, 2.2 stars. A negative review says "no free credits, you have to pay 3 euros before you can try it."
  • GPT Image 2 (com.deeporiginsg.ai.ideagram, Deep Origin): package name ideagram, and the privacy policy path is IdeogramAnd, showing it too was originally aimed at Ideogram before being renamed to ride GPT Image. Listed 2025-09, 276k installs, 1.8 stars.
  • Ideogram (com.text.vision.studio, Swiftin / swiftinnotech LLC, Wyoming shell company, Pakistani phone number): 2026-10-22 updates, 100+ installs. Same name "Ideogram," same pitch of "clear text in posters," and the style list (Bauhaus, watercolour, ...) and hard subscription look a lot like this app. It's the newest copycat.

Big players doing the same thing (text-to-image / text posters), from the googleplay library, cumulative global installs:

  • Canva 790M, Google Gemini (Nano Banana) 2.5B, Hypic 130M, ImagineArt 27M, WOMBO Dream 24.9M, Leonardo.Ai 11.5M (+110k over 7 days), Wonder 16.4M, Logo Maker series in the tens of millions.
  • New AI image-gen wrappers launched in the past year routinely hit several million installs, for example AI Image Generator: Edit Photo (hcarevjapp, listed 2026-07, 7.73M), Muselab AI (2026-45.4M, +920k over 7 days), AI Art Magic (2026-53.1M, +500k over 7 days). Next to them, this app's 29k installs is tiny.

3. Growth tactics

  • Store search + brand-name piggybacking (confirmed): Searching "ideogram" in the US Play store puts it in the first spot; searching "ideogram ai" it ranks second, behind Devgoder's Ideo AI and ahead of Leonardo and Canva (2026-11-06 read from the Play search page). The app title is literally the four letters "Ideogram," and the description lifts Ideogram's signature pitch of "clear, readable text in images."
  • Brand-heat spillover (timing): After Ideogram 4.0 was open-sourced in 2026-06, many AI tool accounts on TikTok promoted it (benkaluza.studio "Ideogram 4.0 – One of the most slept on image models" 7,961 views; nathanhodgson.ai "This new open source AI tool is insane" 25k views; herr_tech, lcabrera57 and other German / Portuguese accounts also covered it). Those people searching for Ideogram on Android can only find third-party apps. At the same time, the earlier squatter com.hkamor.ai.ideogram (110k installs) was delisted in June, vacating the slot.
  • Paid / cheap traffic (inferred, unconfirmed): installs come in bursts and show up only in the tail of category charts in low-price markets like Vietnam and Nigeria, with 29k installs but 0 ratings. That looks more like short-lived Google App Campaigns or incentivized installs. The ad libraries don't track this product, so there's no direct evidence.
  • Content / creators / social: a TikTok search for "ideogram app" returns only official Ideogram content and creator videos, nothing about this Android app. x-radar's search for "ideogram android" and "ideogram app" finds 90 posts in the last 0 days. No press coverage.
  • Developer matrix: the same account has about 7 AI wrapper apps (Dola Ai, Cocopix, etc., roughly 60k installs combined, per AppBrain), a typical small-matrix play.

4. Why it got traction (even "traction" is a stretch)

  1. Brand gap: official Ideogram has no Android app, people are searching for one (YouTube has videos on how to get Ideogram on Android), and whoever is named Ideogram on Play gets the search traffic.
  2. The previous placeholder was taken down: com.hkamor.ai.ideogram was removed 2026-06, and this app went up 09-04 using "Ideogram" directly as its title, ranking first in search.
  3. Ideogram's 4.0 open-sourcing and 4.5 launch drove TikTok buzz that pushed up search demand.
  4. The install pattern looks bought: a few bursts plus category charts in Vietnam and Nigeria, and a 0 rating suggests low quality and weak retention.
  5. Hard subscription plus $19.99–$99.99 premium in-app purchases aim to recoup quickly from the small number of accidental installers, not to build long-term retention.

5. Differentiation

The product itself has no differentiation: "text-to-image + clear text in images + lots of styles + aspect ratio picker" is standard across every AI image app. The underlying model is likely open-source Ideogram 4.0 or some API (unverified). Its only real "differentiator" is the name: it's called Ideogram, so users think they're installing the official one. That's why it gets search traffic, but it's also the most fragile point. A trademark complaint would get it taken down quickly (the previous placeholder lasted 7 months).

6. Visibility and copycats

  • Visibility: still barely known. No press, no X discussion, no TikTok mentions, and revenue isn't public.
  • Copycats: Swiftin's "Ideogram" (com.text.vision.studio, listed in October, 100+ installs) has nearly identical copy and positioning. Devgoder's Ideo AI and Deep Origin's ideagram package were riding the name even earlier. The keyword is already crowded with 3–4 players.

7. What to borrow

  • "Big brand only on iOS / web, nothing on Android" is a persistent search gap on Play. Once the previous placeholder was taken down, that window opened.
  • The play: name piggybacking + hard subscription + low-price market burst buying + a matrix of old developer accounts, replacing any app that gets taken down. But there's trademark and takedown risk, lifespan is measured in months, and a 0 rating means users mostly don't stick around.
  • The genuinely worthwhile version is a serious "text-in-image poster / logo" tool with clear positioning (for example, Swiftin's "change the text, keep the layout"), not one that relies on the name.

8. Still unclear

  • No direct evidence on paid channels or budgets (not tracked in the ad libraries).
  • Which model it runs on (Ideogram 4.0 open weights / Ideogram API / another model).
  • Whether the developer accounts are bought aged accounts or renamed ones, and whether they're run by the same operator as Dola Ai and the other apps.
  • Conversion and revenue: it hasn't charted on any grossing list, so revenue should be small.
  • Our snapshots 11-03 and 11-04 are both 28,627, while AppstoreSpy's 11-04 is 29,344. The two sources differ a little.
  • When Ideogram will file a takedown complaint.
