14k installs, surged to #33 on the US Communication grossing chart: Heartly isn't one app, it's a reskinned matrix. This round's lead account

What it is A paid local dating chat app for English-speaking male users: a half-hour trial, then a subscription, with separate payments to view photos and keep chatting, and in-app purchases up to $179.99.

Why it took off It was deliberately placed on the low-bar Communication grossing chart, with only one- to two-week buying waves in the US, UK, Canada and Australia, plus a high paywall and fake five-star ratings. That got 14k installs ranking alongside KakaoTalk and LINE. The supply side is likely fake people or AI personas.

EHow you could follow it Don't follow this business. Only copy three legitimate moves: pick a category whose chart bar makes sense, test paid quality in high-price English-speaking markets with short campaigns, and put search terms ahead of the brand name in your title.

Grade E: the money comes from fake people chatting and fake good reviews. It's romance-scam territory and breaks Play policy. The same playbook has been spun up across a dozen-plus accounts, and 2026-09 has already been named publicly in an Anthropic report and in the press. The whole batch could be pulled at any time, and legit followers can't copy its supply. Still under the radar

Heartly is a "local dating" app on Google Play, registered under a shell company called "Guangxi Youhe Trading Co., Ltd." In Nov 2, it reached the US Communication grossing chart at #33 with 13k installs, ranking ahead of Signal. Digging further, it has at least 10 sibling apps using the same template, each under a different "XX Trading Co." in another city. It got this far on category choice, ad buying and pricing, not on anything about the product, and it's very likely taking money for fake-person chats. Those who want to build can learn a playbook from it, but I don't recommend following it.

The half-hour free trial

In Sep 16, a US user named Michael Russell left a review on Google Play: "Garbage app, I'd give it zero stars if I could. Only a half-hour 'free trial.' Not a single verified profile, all bots, and they wanted me to upgrade to see their private nude photos and videos." 17 people marked it helpful.

The same day, Joseph Lee wrote: "All fake. Everyone wants money, I didn't meet a single person, some couldn't even speak English well." In Oct 13, Brian Mickley was more specific: "There are just a handful of girls on here. I used it for a few days, paid for the first week, and it's the same few people over and over. Seeing photos costs extra."

These three are the "most helpful" reviews on the store page (11-06 read). On the same page, Heartly is rated 4.6 stars from 706 ratings, 577 of them five-star.

What it is

The store description is standard dating copy: browse profiles, say hi, share your life, find shared interests, each section led by an emoji. The update note is a single line: "Glad to have you join our community of like-minded users." In-app purchases run from $9.99 to $179.99 each, no ads, rated 17+ (Google Play, 11-06).

Several details are off. The category is "Communication," not "Dating." The privacy policy sits on a separate brand domain, heartly-chat.com. The developer site youhecommerce.com is titled "Overseas Social Platform," its image paths are all /ai-images/, and the contact email is a Gmail address made of random letters. The package name com.vivisht.android is also an invented word.

Where the volume comes from

The install curve is two square-wave bursts (Google Play install counts; the 8–October portion is a third-party estimate):

PeriodAverage daily new installsCumulative
08-19 ~ 08-25About 180About 1,500
08-28 ~ 09-22single digits to a dozenAbout 1,900
09-23 ~ 10-04About ¥260–380About 5,200
10-05 ~ 10-290–2007,223
10-30 ~ 11-02About ¥1,100–1,67013,305
11-03 ~ 11-06About 15013,761

It starts suddenly and stops suddenly, nearly zero before and after. The week before the second wave (10-22) saw a new version released. No TikTok or X posts about it turn up, and no press coverage. This shape almost certainly comes from paid traffic, but I couldn't trace the channel. It doesn't appear in the public ad libraries of Google, Meta or TikTok (inference).

It charts only in the US, UK, Canada and Australia, with no chart presence in any other store. On the US Communication grossing chart it ran #63,11-02 to #33,11-06 on 10-29, then dropped to #55; on the UK Communication grossing chart it held steady at #20 from 11-01 to 11-04. From Nov 3 onward its free chart rank kept falling (to #163 in the US), while the grossing chart stayed put: new users stopped coming in, but those who had already paid kept paying.

The ratings also look off. At 10-29, the rating count was 6.5% of installs. During the second wave it added roughly 1,600 installs and 60+ ratings per day, about 4%, while typical Play apps sit at 1–2%. Only 33 of the 700 ratings have written text. Most likely an in-app prompt is pushing five stars (inference).

Where the money comes from

The negative reviews lay out the payment chain clearly: a half-hour trial first, then a week's subscription, after which viewing photos and continuing chats costs extra. At the $9.99 to $179.99 price points, it earns from a small group of male users who are disappointed with big dating apps and willing to pay for "someone to chat with."

14k installs reaching #33 on the grossing chart comes down to category. Around ranks 40–60 on the US Communication grossing chart sit KakaoTalk (53), LINE (54), Kik (51) and a few virtual-number apps (11-06). In that range, a handful of large subscriptions a day is enough to chart. The same revenue in Dating would be fighting Tinder, Hinge and a pile of paid chat apps, and the ranking would look much worse. No public revenue figures are available.

It isn't one person running it alone.

Matching the privacy-policy domain format (www.<brand>-chat.com), the random package names, the trading-company shells and the $179.99 top price tier against Google Play turns up a whole batch (Google Play installs, 11-06):

11 in total, roughly 104k installs combined. 7 of them went live in batches on Jul 17 and 21, with another added every few weeks after. Every title follows the "keyword: brand" format, mixing Dating, Nearby, Meet and Chat, with each app claiming its own set of search terms. One app per developer account, one shell company per account, so a banned account doesn't take the others down. On 11-06, OneVibe, Comely and Crushly were also on the US Communication grossing chart (#71, #74, #83). Heartly doesn't have the most installs, but this round clearly put more budget behind it.

The playbook has already been exposed. In September 2026, Anthropic's threat intelligence report documented a Chinese studio running 20+ US-targeted dating apps, using AI-driven fake personas and deliberately varied class names to dodge platform link detection. CNA and KSL both followed up. The brands the report names are ROMI, DORA, LUMA and others, not this batch, so there's no basis to say it's the same operator, but the playbook is identical. Other matrices are competing for the same English-speaking users at the same time, such as Xmet, BlushX and Cuffing, all under fumochats.com.

How many people know about it

Heartly barely shows up anywhere: no press, zero social chatter, no disclosed revenue. But the playbook is hardly a secret. The operator already runs a dozen-plus apps in a matrix, several more sister matrices exist, and the whole approach has been covered by tech media. Platforms now have fingerprints for it, and the category is being watched.

If it were you

The call: don't copy it. The money comes from fake companions and manufactured reviews, which falls under romance scam territory in the US, is explicitly banned by Google Play policy, and has been named publicly, so whole batches could be pulled at any time and money already collected could be clawed back.

Who it fits: nobody should copy it as-is. Teams already running subscription apps who want to study distribution tactics can take its three moves apart and look at them.

Who it doesn't fit: indie devs who want to build a real local dating app. The hard part of dating apps is women users, and Heartly sidesteps exactly that. You won't have a ready user pool. Copy its ads and pricing and you'll just buy a crowd of men who can't find anyone to talk to, and then leave bad reviews.

How to do it (only the legitimate parts): (1) When picking a category, check the bar on that category's Top Grossing chart first. The same revenue in a lower-bar category that still fits the product gets a more visible rank and an extra chart slot. Deliberately miscategorizing gets you reclassified or penalized by Google. (2) Launch new apps only in the US, UK, Canada and Australia. Run one or two weeks of paid installs, then stop and see how long the app holds on Top Grossing. That tells you the quality of paying users. (3) In titles, put search keywords before the brand name.

How they acquire users: Heartly's paid acquisition channels weren't found. Only two things can be confirmed: store search and chart visibility. A legitimate product can use both just fine.

When the window was: there was no window. This category's window is set by when platforms move, not by when you enter.

When you'd be misreading it: if these apps are still charting six months later, haven't been pulled, and the "all bots" complaints in the reviews have faded, that suggests there's a real supply behind them that keeps users around, and it's worth a second look. Conversely, if 11-December they all disappear from Google Play in a batch, that confirms the path doesn't work.

Where users come from
  • Inferred short paid bursts: two square-wave spikes: roughly 300 per day (09-23–10-04), then about 1,600 (10-30–11-02), with the surrounding stretches near 0. Charted only in the four US, UK, Canada and Australia stores. A new build was released one week before the second wave: 1.0.5.
  • Inferred Google Ads: googleads library 11-02 checked by legal entity name, product name and domain, result no_ads; they may be buying through a different entity or an agency.
  • Inferred Meta / TikTok ads: no sign of it or its matrix siblings in the metaads or tiktokads libraries (those only track a whitelist of products).
  • Confirmed store search + Communication category: titles use keyword-first formats like "Nearby Dating: Heartly", and each app in the matrix rotates its keyword set. Placed in Communication, where the Top Grossing bar is low.
  • Confirmed rating management: rating-to-install ratio of roughly 4–6.5%, with only about 5% of ratings including written text and 82% five-star. Doesn't match the high-upvoted negative reviews.
  • Inferred content / social / media: 0 mentions in TikHub and x-radar; online there are only automated AppBrain and Apptopia pages.

Data sources: googleplay library (app_snap / app_day / app_day_ext / chart_rank, 10-29 to 11-06), googleads library, metaads library, tiktokads library, Play store pages and the official site scraped via Jina, TikHub, x-radar. History filled in from AppstoreSpy is marked "AppstoreSpy est." in the text.

Bottom line

Heartly isn't a standalone product that broke out on its own. It's the largest app in a reskin matrix run by a Chinese team selling "local paid dating chat." The matrix has at least 11 apps, each registered under a different city's "XX Trading Co., Ltd." The playbook: run paid acquisition only in the four English-speaking countries (US, UK, Canada, Australia); deliberately choose Communication over Dating, because the Communication Top Grossing bar is low, so 14k installs can put an app next to KakaoTalk and LINE; then use short, one-off paid bursts to push it up the chart, and collect money from a small group of men who pay to see photos and keep chatting, through subscriptions at $9.99–$179.99 and coins. It broke through on distribution and monetization tactics, not product differentiation. Reviews repeatedly say "all bots / fake people," suggesting it likely follows the "AI persona plus human chat agents" model that has already been exposed in the industry (unverified).

1. What it is

  • The store description reads like a generic dating app: "browse profiles, say hi, share your life, find shared interests." The copy is very templated (Play store page, scraped via Jina).
  • In-app purchases $9.99 – $179.99 each, no ads, rated Mature 17+ (app_snap; Apptopia page).
  • Category is COMMUNICATION, not DATING.
  • Version 1.0.5,10-23 is the latest update; the release note is a single line: "Glad to have you join our community of like-minded users." (app table)
  • The privacy policy sits on a separate brand domain, heartly-chat.com, written in Aug 5. It only says "ages 18 and up" and "location is used for nearby matching" (scraped via Jina).
  • The developer's site youhecommerce.com is an empty shell: the title is "Overseas Social Platform," the image paths all point to /ai-images/, and it has a timeline reading "2025.04 froze the first version... 2025.12 overseas gray release." The contact email is a personal gmail address, [email protected] (app table and site).

11 apps together have roughly 104k installs. 7 of them launched in batches on 07-17 and 07-21, and new ones were added every few weeks after that. The names all follow the "keyword: brand" format (Nearby / Dating / Meet go first to catch search). Heartly isn't the one with the most installs (OneVibe has more), but it has the best chart rank and the fastest growth, so it's the one being pushed in this round.

Each developer account holds just one app, and each account is tied to a different shell company, with random package names. This way, if one account gets banned, the others aren't affected, and it helps avoid Google's similarity detection. Anthropic's September 2026 threat intelligence report (GTG-15001) documented the same approach: a Chinese studio built 20 dating apps aimed at US users, powered by Claude with AI personas, "deliberately varying class names across 20 variants to evade platform linking," plus "UI that only activates during review." The brands listed in the report are DORA, DONI, ROMI, LUMA, JOVIA, KIRA, GRACECHAT, HAVEN, NALO, and LOVIA, which does not include this Heartly batch, so it can't be confirmed as the same group. But the playbook and target market are the same (Anthropic report, CNA 2026-10-07, KSL 2026-09-28).

3.2 Other new "Local singles paid chat" apps from the same period (launched 2026, charting in English-speaking markets)

googleplay library, 11-06:

  • Pullup: Meet Real Singles (Arrow BC Ltd, 03-12): 149k installs, #22 in US dating Top Grossing.
  • Alora (UG-BODA, 05-21): 131k installs.
  • Muah (WISERING PTE, 05-18): 86k installs, #19 in Canada social Top Grossing, highest in-app purchase $499.99.
  • Hihi – Chat & Date Nearby (AURORACODE, 05-22): 69k installs.
  • NightSpark (StandardStream LLC, 09-03): 63k installs, #9 in UK social Top Free.
  • Kizme 53k, PeekMeet 44k.
  • Another matrix, Shamim Reza / hxathena: Xmet, BlushX, Berry, Cuffing, FlutterX, all on *.fumochats.com domains, with in-app purchases at $2.99–$199.99.
  • A third matrix, kautsar.app: Rovana, Meetly.

Most of these sit in SOCIAL or DATING. Putting this Heartly batch under COMMUNICATION is an unusual choice in this space.

3.3 Big mainstream players and established names

googleplay library:

  • Tinder 530M, Badoo 410M, Bumble 127M, Hinge 41.4M, Hily 21.3M installs, all home in the DATING category.
  • Old-school "pay to chat with strangers" apps: MeetMe 109M, Tagged 64.1M, Skout 82.7M, ranking #20–28 in US social Top Grossing.
  • These are real two-sided markets, and Heartly doesn't compete with them head-on. What it wants is a niche group of male users who are disappointed with the big dating apps and willing to pay.

4. Where users come from

ChannelEvidenceVerified?
Paid acquisition (short-term push)The curve is two square-wave bursts: 09-23~10-04 at about 300,10-30~11-02 a day, and then about 1,600 a day after that, with the level near 0 before and after. It only shows up in four high-CPM countries: US, UK, Canada, and Australia. A release went out one week before the second wave. There's no visible content buzz at all.Inference, no direct evidence
Google AdsThe googleads library 11-02 was checked by legal entity, product name and domain, and the result is no_ads. But App promotion ads can run under other entities or agency accounts, so this can't be ruled out.Not confirmed
Meta / TikTok adsThe metaads and tiktokads libraries show no ads for it or any package in the matrix (these libraries only track listed products, and TikTok only shows ads served to Europe; no results doesn't mean no ads were run). Not confirmed
Store search (ASO)The title puts the keyword before the brand name ("Nearby Dating: Heartly"), and each app in the matrix uses a different mix of Dating / Nearby / Meet / Chat, so multiple accounts take up search results. Filing under communication lowers the chart bar and gives more exposure slots.Partly confirmed (title and category are facts; unknown how much traffic they bring)
Rating manipulationRating rate 4–6.5%, 95% of ratings have no text, five stars make up 82%, which doesn't match what the negative reviews describeAnomaly confirmed, method unverified
TikTok / X / Reddit / pressSearching TikHub for "heartly dating app" returns no related videos; x-radar searches for heartly / youhe trading returned 90 results over 0 days; most "Heartly" hits online are name collisions with UI kits on Dribbble and UI8.Confirmed none

5. Why it can break out

  1. It picked a low-bar chart: at US communication Top Grossing #33–55, it sits next to KakaoTalk, LINE, and virtual-number tools. Only a few large subscriptions a day are needed to hold that spot. Placed in dating, it would be fighting Tinder, Hinge, and Pullup. So 14k installs is enough to look like it's "making money" (chart_rank).
  2. Only targets high-value countries: US, UK, Canada, and Australia. Each paying user is worth more, which is what makes a $179.99 price tier sellable (chart_rank).
  3. Short bursts, each one has to pay back: two square-wave campaigns of 1–2 weeks each. After spending stops, the Top Free rank drops right away, but Top Grossing holds, suggesting paying users cover the cost of a single wave, at least by the operator's estimate (app_day_ext, chart_rank).
  4. A high paywall right at the key action: negative reviews mention a "half-hour free trial" and "paid for the first week, then had to pay extra to see photos." That's the three-layer model of trial → subscription → à la carte coins. The $9.99–$179.99 price tiers match sibling apps like Comely and OneVibe exactly, so it's a ready-made pricing template (app_snap, Play reviews).
  5. Likely fake people or AI-persona supply: several highly upvoted negative reviews say "all bots," "same group of girls," "barely speak English." The industry already has exposed cases of this (Anthropic GTG-15001, the "Zhiliàn" case reported by Caixin). This lets a platform offer "someone is chatting with you" right away without having any real female users (Play reviews; Heartly's own backend not verified).
  6. The matrix spreads the risk: 11 apps, 9 shell companies, one app per account, random package names. If one account is banned, the others keep running. Today it's the lead app, tomorrow it could be swapped for OneVibe (googleplay library app table).

6. Differentiation

No product differentiation. The copy and features are a generic template. Compared with the 10 sibling apps in the same matrix, only the name and colors differ. Its differences from competitors are all in how it's run:

  • Filed under COMMUNICATION to avoid dating-category competition;
  • A one-shell-company, one-account matrix;
  • A uniform high-price subscription plus coins template;
  • Only targeting the four English-speaking countries.

These tactics are why it performed, and since every account in the matrix works the same way, Heartly's results probably reflect this round's budget being poured into it.

7. How many people know about it

  • Heartly itself is little known: no media coverage, 0 discussion on X and TikTok, revenue not disclosed; only auto-generated pages from AppBrain, Apptopia, and Similarweb.
  • But this playbook has been widely exposed: 2026-09 Anthropic's threat report named a "Chinese studio running a network of 20 dating apps aimed at US users," followed by CNA and KSL. Caixin / ThinkChina reported on a domestic "same-city dating chat" fraud case (34M yuan, 7,000+ victims). Google and Apple already have the relevant signals, the category is under scrutiny, and the delisting risk is high.
  • Copycats already exist: at least three similar matrices from the same period (Shamim Reza / fumochats, kautsar.app, plus the "Local Singles" batch above) are competing for the same users in English-speaking markets.

8. What can be borrowed (only the legitimate parts)

  • Choose the category by chart bar: the same revenue ranks higher in a category with a lower bar, and that also brings chart exposure. The catch is that the category has to make sense; forcing a misfiled listing risks Google reclassifying it or penalizing it.
  • Soft launch only in high-value countries, test payback with short square-wave bursts: one wave lasts 1–2 weeks; watch how long Top Grossing holds after Top Free drops, to judge paying-user quality.
  • Use the "keyword: brand" title format to win search.
  • Do not borrow: fake people or AI personas posing as real humans, fake reviews, shell companies to dodge bans. In the US these carry fraud risk (the FTC and FBI both investigate dating scams), Google Play policy explicitly prohibits them, and they're already exposed in the press, so whole batches can be pulled at any time and the money can be clawed back.

9. Still unclear

  • Which channel the paid acquisition runs through (Google UAC, Meta, or affiliate / ad networks) and the budget size: none of the three ad libraries show it.
  • Whether the chat partner inside the app is AI, a paid chatter, or a real person: only review evidence exists, with no install-level testing.
  • Whether it's connected to the GTG-15001 group in Anthropic's report: the brand lists don't match, so it can't be confirmed.
  • Actual revenue: how much money the #33 US communication Top Grossing and #20 UK rankings correspond to is unknown; Apptopia and Similarweb have not published estimates.
  • Listed date: the store says 07-17, AppstoreSpy's data starts at 08-19, the recall card cites Apptopia at 08-07, and the privacy policy is dated 08-05. It may have really started selling in the US in early August.
  • Whether the matrix is one team, or the same source code sold to several teams (source-code resale is common in this industry).
