They turned an equalizer into a phone home screen and got 220K installs in three months: the "tool + launcher" business being mass-copied on Android
What it is An Android equalizer app that asks you to set it as the phone's default home screen; swipe right on the home screen and you get the sound controls.
Why it took off Once it's your launcher, users open it every time they press Home, which multiplies ad impressions dozens of times over and funds waves of paid acquisition in cheap countries like India and Southeast Asia.
BHow you could follow Don't copy the equalizer. Copy the "tool + launcher" structure: pick a tool category with high search volume that no one has made into a launcher yet, swap different tools onto the same launcher base, and test retention and payback in low-cost countries with a small budget.

Equalizer Home is an equalizer app, but after installation it asks you to set it as the phone's default home screen. Launched 9 Aug, reached 227K installs by 6 Nov, with 48K new installs in the last 7 days. It's run by a small Nanjing company, which also publishes a "PDF launcher" and an "antivirus launcher" under the same account. This app is not worth copying; what's worth studying is the structure behind it: in 2026 October, 41 new Google Play apps of the form "some tool + launcher" appeared. Below: what it is, why it has to be a launcher, where the installs come from, where the money comes from, and whether you can still get in.
A one-star review from September 14
Sep 14, a user named Lokman Said gave it one star on Google Play with a single line: "Don't download, there's malware in it." 31 people marked it helpful. Two weeks later another user left five stars: "I made the sound the way I want it, five stars." 57 people marked that helpful. Oct 5, another five-star review: "Great sound, and I can run songs from other music apps through it." (Google Play India storefront page, 11-06)
The one-star review says it's malware and the five-star reviews say it works well; both are partly right. It does adjust sound, and it also did something ordinary users can't see: it replaced their home screen.
What it actually is
The first line of the store page reads: "Equalizer Home is an Android launcher designed for music equalizers and players; it replaces your phone's default home screen and app drawer." It has two halves:
- The equalizer half: multi-band EQ, bass boost, virtual surround, volume control, presets like pop / rock / classical / jazz, plus a local music player. Android's built-in audio effects interface makes these features straightforward to build.
- The launcher half: icons, folders, widgets and search, like any normal home screen; swipe right on the home screen and you get the equalizer.
Free, with ads, no in-app purchases. The store page's data safety section says it collects location and app usage data and may share it with third parties. The developer is Nanjing Shanxiao Culture and Art Co., Ltd., in Gulou Street, Jiangning District. The account now has four apps: this one, PDF Kit Home (PDF reader + launcher), Shield Home (antivirus + launcher), and a newly launched invoice generator. The store descriptions of the first three all open with the same sentence: "an Android launcher designed for …"
Why an equalizer has to be a launcher
For users, "replacing your entire home screen to get better bass" makes no sense. For developers, this step is worth a lot.
A regular equalizer gets closed right after you tweak it, so one user might open it less than once a day. Once it's your default home screen, every Home press and every app you close lands you back in it. Session counts jump by dozens of times, and the slots for open ads, interstitials and native ads multiply with them. Uninstalling is also a hassle: you have to go into settings and switch the default home screen back first. It has no in-app purchases, so all the money comes from ads, which means "one more open" directly equals "one more ad impression" (inference: no device-level verification of where the ads actually show).
The equalizer is just the category they picked as a traffic hook. "equalizer", "bass booster" and "volume" are old, big keywords on Google Play: Dub Studio's Music Volume EQ has 97M installs, Coocent's Bass Booster & Equalizer 46.6M, 360 Tool's Volume Booster 73.3M, and it's still climbing, adding 638k in the last 7 days (Google Play installs, 11-06). This app crams all those words into its package name: com.voice.equalizer.bass.player.volume.
Where users come from
Paid acquisition, aimed at India and Southeast Asia (inference, high confidence). Its install curve comes in bursts. By AppstoreSpy's estimate, from mid-September to October 5 it rose from 14k to 99k; on Oct 5 it added about 29k in one day, then nearly zero for the next two days; from Oct 16 to 21 it only managed a few dozen to a thousand a day; then in Nov 1 it picked up again, to 12.6k a day. Organic search traffic is smooth, and this on-off shape looks more like ad budgets being switched on and off. I didn't find out which ad platform it runs on.
The charts it's hit point the same way: it has only made the Music & Audio category Top Free chart, peaking at #45 in Indonesia, #59 in India, #61 in Malaysia, #69 in Thailand and #89 in the Philippines, with later showings at the tail end in South Africa, Vietnam and Australia; it has never charted on the overall or Top Grossing charts (10-29 to 11-06). These are all countries where buying an install is cheap.
Ratings are likely being managed (inference). In October 29 it had 324 ratings, with one-, two- and three-star counts all at 0, and only 2 of them had written text. In November 6 it suddenly picked up 16 one-star ratings. The US store page shows 4.5 stars, while the India store page shows 3.6. A common setup is to show the app's own rating prompt first and only send people who give high marks to rate on Google Play; once bad reviews pile up, that filter stops working.
No content buzz. TikTok searches turn up no videos about it, nobody has mentioned it on X in the past 60 days, and the web only has APK download sites and automatically generated data-site pages.
Who it's competing with
Two groups of players.
One group is the traditional equalizers, the older apps with tens of millions of installs mentioned above, plus the built-in sound effects on Samsung, Xiaomi and OPPO phones, and the equalizer inside Spotify. They don't act as home screens, but they hold most of the search traffic.
The other group uses the same structure, and they're the real competition. The "volume/equalizer + home screen" combination isn't even original to this app:
| App | Developer | Launched | Installs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Volume Control Sound Launcher | AtomApplications | 2025-12-03 | 3.36M |
| Volume Control Home | Utility Apps Home | 2026-07-13 | 1.01M |
| Equalizer Home- Enhanced Music | ShanXiaoCulture.Art | 2026-08-09 | 230k |
(Google Play installs, 11-06)
The company behind Volume Control Home also makes Weather Now Launcher (7.17M) and Settings Home (910k, #3 on the US Productivity Top Free chart), making it one of the biggest players on this path.
Widen the scope to every "X + Home" app: apps whose descriptions use both "launcher" and "home screen" and that were published 2024 years ago, 2025 in the first half of the year saw 1 to 5 per month, from August 2025 it went to 8 to 14 per month, and in the second half of 2026 it ran 18, 29, 29, 35 and 41 per month. The 41 apps published in October added 1.91M installs combined in the past week (Google Play, 11-06 stats). The categories are all over the place: PDF reading, cleaning, finding your phone, video downloads, short dramas, SMS, TV remotes, even mini-games turned into home screens. PDF Reader Home- File Viewer has 1.54M installs, and its developer is also a Nanjing company, using the same "X Home- Y" title format as this app.
So in this playbook it's a later, smaller follower.
How much is left
In indie developer circles almost nobody talks about this: no disclosed revenue, no press coverage, no creator videos. But within the tool-app companies on Google Play it's now a public practice, with dozens of new apps every month, and the pace is picking up.
This tells us two things. First, the structure probably makes money, or so many people wouldn't keep copying it category after category. Second, the good categories are being claimed one by one: there are already three equalizers, and PDF, cleaning and weather each have apps in the millions of installs.
The risks are obvious too. Google Play has long reviewed apps that change system settings without consent or show disruptive ads, and once users feel "my home screen got hijacked," one-star reviews say "malware". This app's India store rating of 3.6 stars is exactly what that risk looks like.
If it were you
In one line: don't copy the equalizer category, copy the "tool + home screen" structure. It turns a one-off utility into an entry point you open dozens of times a day, which is one of the few structural ways for ad-monetized tool apps to raise revenue per user, and nobody has crowded into every category yet.
Who it suits: small teams already running ad-monetized tool apps on Google Play, with an ad mediation setup in place and experience buying installs through Google App Campaigns or other paid channels.
Who it doesn't suit: iOS-only teams (iOS doesn't allow third-party home screen replacement); anyone without paid acquisition experience who is relying on organic traffic; anyone who can't handle being delisted and having to republish under a new package.
How to do it: make a table matching high-search-volume, simple-function tool categories on Google Play (translation, flashlight, QR codes, calculator, recorder, wallpapers, fonts...) against the existing "X + home screen" apps, and pick the ones with nobody in them or only one player. Build the home screen base once and rotate categories on top of it. Make the experience better than these factory apps: on first launch, clearly say "this replaces your home screen, you can switch back anytime", put a one-tap revert somewhere obvious, and keep ads restrained. That way you take fewer "malware" one-stars and draw less scrutiny from review.
How to get users: put the category keywords into the store title and package name, that's the base; then spend a small budget on cheap countries like India, Indonesia and the Philippines for one week and check cost per install and day-7 retention. If retention is well above that of ordinary tool apps in the same category, raise the budget based on how fast it pays back; if it doesn't pay back, shut it off and move on to the next category.
Timing: new listings keep rising every month, and good categories get claimed month by month. If you're going to test it, publish your first package before the end of 2026 and check in Q1 2027 whether one round pays back.
What would mean you read it wrong:
- Google Play issues new rules, or a batch of "X + home screen" apps gets delisted: the foundation of this path disappears.
- Monthly new listings in this category drop from 40, or the weekly installs of the top few clearly stall: that means the money isn't as easy to make anymore, and the copycats are pulling out.
- An app you publish this way has day-7 retention in line with ordinary tools: that means users switch their default home screen back right after installing, and the home screen step isn't doing anything.

Why Equalizer Home- Enhanced Music (com.voice.equalizer.bass.player.volume) took off
Channel: Google Play | Developer: ShanXiaoCulture.Art (Nanjing Shanxiao Culture and Art Co., Ltd.) | Store launch 2026-08-09 | Research date 2026-11-06
Bottom line
It didn't take off because the product was good. It's another example of the "tool + home screen launcher" wrapper approach that has spread across Google Play since the second half of 2025: an equalizer, a high-search-volume, low-barrier tool, turned into a launcher you have to set as your default home screen. Every Home press is a session and an ad opportunity, so retention and ad impressions are systematically amplified, which is enough to support buying installs in India and Southeast Asia. The install curve comes in bursts, which lines up with ad spending being switched on and off. The differentiation (equalizer + home screen) is what made it take off, but it's differentiation in the monetization structure, not in the user experience.
1. What it is
- Store description: "Equalizer Home is an Android launcher designed for music equalizer and player. It replaces your device's default home screen and app drawer… Users can simply swipe right on the main interface to preview the equalizer". Features are the usual multi-band equalizer, bass boost, virtual surround, presets, a local music player and volume control, plus a home screen (icons, folders, widgets, search). Sources: Google Play detail page (gl=in, fetched 2026-11-06), googleplay library
apptable. - Free, with ads (
ad_supported=True), no in-app purchases (offers_iap=False). Source: googleplay libraryapp_snap, consistent every day from 10-29 to 11-06. - Developer: Nanjing Shanxiao Culture & Art Co., Ltd., Jiangning District, Nanjing. Play lists 3 apps from them: Equalizer Home, PDF Kit Home - File Reader, Shield Home-Security&Antivirus. All three are "X Home" titles: each wraps a tool category in a launcher (PDF Kit Home describes itself as "an Android launcher designed to enhance your reading experience"; Shield Home as "An Android launcher designed for mobile antivirus and security protection"). The site shanxiaoculture.art is a generic template listing "Featured Apps" like weather, PDF and cleaners, which only partly matches what is actually on Play. Sources: Play developer page, shanxiaoculture.art, similarweb / chrome-stats pages. AppBrain describes the developer as "active since 2025… 3 apps… about 400 thousand" installs (search snippet).
2. Growth data
- Lifetime installs 227,207 (exact global figure), +47,825 in the last 7 days; rating 429. Source: googleplay library
app_profile, 2026-11-06. - Install curve since launch (googleplay library
app_day_ext, AppstoreSpy estimates):- 09-11 only 3,215; from 09-18 to 10-05 it climbed from 14k to 99k, with daily adds rising from about 1.5k to 3–6k;
- after that it comes in pulses: 10-05 roughly +29k in a day, 10-06/07 nearly 0,10-08 +22k, 10-13 +35k (over two days), then 10-16 to 10-21 tens to a thousand a day, essentially flat;
- 10-22 to 10-29 a few hundred to a couple thousand a day; 11-01 picks up again (11-01 +12.6k, 11-03 +21.9k over two days, 11-05 +7.4k, 11-06 +6.0k).
- This on-off sawtooth looks nothing like the smooth curve of organic search traffic. It looks more like paid budgets being switched on and off (inference; the specific channels are unverified).
- Charts: only on the Music & Audio category free chart. From 10-29 it charted in Indonesia (best 45), India (59), Malaysia (61), Thailand (69), and the Philippines (89); later Vietnam, South Africa and Australia at the tail. It never made the overall app chart or any grossing chart. Source: googleplay library
chart_rank. - The rating structure looks suspicious: at 10-29, out of 324 ratings, 1 were 0 stars, 2 were 0 stars, 3 were 0 stars (histogram [0,0,0,76,247]), and only 2 came with written text. From 11-02 3-star ratings appear, and 11-06 suddenly 16 1-star ratings show up. The US store page shows 4.5–4.7 stars, while the India page shows 3.6 stars / 3.5 stars. The rating-to-install ratio is about 0.19%. This suggests the US rating was probably filtered by something like only prompting users who are already happy to rate, while real users in the paid-acquisition markets rate it much lower (inference). Sources: googleplay library
app_snap.histogram; Play India page. - Public review samples (India page): 5 stars "awesome sounds good…" (46 people found it helpful), 5 stars "I changed sounds in this app… giving this 5 stars" (57), 1 stars "don't download this it contains malware" (31). Written reviews are scarce, and our library's
reviewtable has no samples for this app (it never made the overall top 30).
3. Competitors
"Android equalizer / bass boost" products are among the oldest and most crowded categories on Play. "Tool + launcher" is a wave that has ballooned over the past 2025–26 years.
Traditional equalizers (same job, but not a home screen), all from googleplay library app_profile (2026-11-06):
- Music Volume EQ - Equalizer (Dub Studio, 2012): 97M installs.
- Bass Booster & Equalizer (Coocent, 2016): 46.6M.
- Volume Booster - Sound Booster (360 Tool, 2023): 73.3M, +7k in the last 638 days.
- Flat Equalizer - Bass Booster (2018): 20.9M, +7k in the last 111 days, reached #23 on Indonesia's grossing category chart (has in-app purchase revenue).
- Equalizer - Bass Booster & Volume (iJoysoft 2019 / Easyelife 2022), Volume Bass Booster, Equalizer (ZANKHANA, 202B, +7k in the last 150 days), and a long tail more.
- Big-brand features: Samsung SoundAlive / Dolby Atmos, system sound effects on Xiaomi / OPPO and other phones, and the built-in equalizers in Spotify / YouTube Music.
Direct rivals on the same "volume / EQ + home screen" idea:
- Volume Control Home (Utility Apps Home, com.eet.volume.launcher, listed 2026-07-13): 1.01M installs, +7k in the last 55 days, best rank #10 on the US Music & Audio free chart. The same publisher (com.eet.*) also runs Weather Now Launcher (7.17M) and Settings Home (908k, +7k in the last 290 days, #3 in US Productivity). This publisher is one of the larger operators of this playbook.
- Volume Control Sound Launcher (AtomApplications, 2025-12-03): 3.36M, #23 in US Tools. The same company also has Find My Phone by Clap Launcher (3.76M).
The "X Home / X Launcher" wave using the same playbook (googleplay library, apps whose description mentions both launcher and home screen, counted by listing month, starting from 2024): 2025 first half of the year 1–5 per month, from 2025-08 8–14 per month, from 2026-06 18, 29, 29, 35, 41 per month; the 2026-10 listings total 41, adding nearly 7M installs in the last 1.91 days. Categories cover PDF reading (One PDF Home 2.73M, PDF Reader Home - File Viewer 1.54M; that developer is also in Nanjing: Nanjing Yanglan Technology, with a title format "X Home - Y" identical to this one), cleaners (Total Cleaner: Home Launcher, PureClean), find-my-phone, video download, short dramas, SMS, TV remotes, and even mini games (Gamnest, Hero Fighting Games, Mr.Bunn's "XX Launcher / Home Screen" apps, each with millions of installs).
How it differs: compared with traditional equalizers, it adds the step of "must be set as the default home screen". For users that is friction, but commercially it means stickiness and ad slots. Against its same-playbook rivals it is barely different: it just sits an order of magnitude smaller, picked the equalizer category, and targets India / Southeast Asia.
4. Where users came from (growth tactics)
- Paid acquisition (highly likely, not directly confirmed): the install curve is switch-on-and-off pulses (see above), and chart presence is limited to low-CPI markets like India, Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia and the Philippines. There is no organic content buzz at all. Our googleads and metaads libraries don't show this app or the publisher, but those libraries only track a fixed list, so not appearing there doesn't mean it isn't advertising. Specific channels (Google App Campaigns, Mintegral, Unity, TikTok Pangle, etc.) are unverified.
- Store search (partial): the title "Equalizer Home- Enhanced Music" and package name
com.voice.equalizer.bass.player.volumestack high-traffic keywords like equalizer / bass / player / volume. That is standard ASO, but search alone doesn't explain the sawtooth shape. - Rating prompting (inference): the US histogram has long lacked 1–3 star ratings, written reviews are extremely rare, and the India page's rating is noticeably lower. This fits a common pattern where the in-app flow only sends happy users to the Play rating prompt, which helps hold up store conversion.
- Content / creators / social: none found. A TikTok search for "Equalizer Home launcher" returned no relevant videos; x-radar shows 60 posts in the last 0 days; the web only has auto-generated aggregator pages like APKPure, AppBrain, Softonic and Similarweb.
- Developer matrix: the same entity runs PDF Kit Home and Shield Home, reusing one launcher base across categories. This is a small-account / product-matrix play for volume.
5. Why it works (where the money comes back from)
- The launcher format raises the ceiling on ad monetization: once it's the default home screen, each return to the home screen is an "app open", so DAU and sessions far exceed a equalizer you open and close. That leaves more room for ad placements (app open, interstitial, native, feed), and the uninstall barrier is higher (users must first switch the default launcher back). It has ads and no in-app purchases, so revenue can only come from ads.
- Equalizers are a proven high-volume search term: Play has an entire list of equalizer / volume booster apps with tens of millions of installs. Demand is steady, users aren't picky, and the features can be built on the system AudioEffect API, so development cost is low.
- Low-CPI markets make paid acquisition pay back: CPI in India and Southeast Asia is cheap, so once the launcher's retention and ad impressions are high enough, ROI turns positive. That's likely why it keeps spending in waves (inference).
- The playbook itself spread fast in 2026: same-structure new apps went from single digits per month in 2025 to 2026-10 of 41 per month, which suggests the model is making money and being copied. This title is one category slot in that assembly line run by a small Nanjing entity.
6. Differentiation
- Its self-described differentiator is "uniquely combines an equalizer with an Android launcher". That is indeed rare in the equalizer category (I found only two or three direct peers, Volume Control Home and Volume Control Sound Launcher).
- But that differentiation means little to users (who needs a home screen built around an equalizer?), and a lot to developers, because it buys retention and ad slots. So it's a reason it works, but the reason lies in the monetization structure, not the experience.
- Within the "X + Launcher" playbook it has no differentiation, and it's also small in scale (227k vs. hundreds of millions for the top players in the same playbook).
7. Visibility and copycats
- Visibility: few people know about it yet. No public revenue, no press or X coverage, no creator content. But the "X + Launcher" playbook it belongs to is already an open secret on Play, with dozens of new apps a month from many companies.
- Copycats: this specific combo of equalizer + home screen already had Volume Control Home (July) and Volume Control Sound Launcher (2025-12) before this one, so it's more a follower than a leader. The same developer also copied the template into PDF and antivirus.
8. What others can learn
- "Tool + launcher" turns a one-off utility into a high-frequency session entry point, a structural way to raise LTV for ad-monetized tool apps. Pick a tool category with large search volume that system APIs can implement, wrap it in the same launcher base, and spread across a matrix of categories.
- Testing ROI in low-CPI markets and switching budgets on and off as they pay back will produce a sawtooth curve like this one.
- Risks to see clearly: Play has policies on "disruptive ads / hijacking the home screen", reviews already call it malware, and its India-store rating is 3.6. The ceiling and the ban risk for this route both track directly with how compliant it is.
9. Uncertain
- No direct evidence for specific ad networks, unit prices, or payback data (the ad libraries don't track it).
- No device verification of where the ads show (whether it puts interstitials on the home screen or lock screen).
- Whether Nanjing Shanxiao and Nanjing Ailan (PDF Reader Home- File Viewer) are the same team or the same outsourced base is unverified; they only share naming and location.
- The real reason for the gap between the US and India ratings (rating prompts vs. regional difference) is unverified.
- Of the 227k installs, how many are actively used can't be judged from store data.
