PDF Box: PDF Reader & Tool · Wah Hub

# 4.25M installs in three months with the version number never changed: the PDF Box on an Indonesian personal account, and the entry it puts on your desktop

**What it is** A free phone tool that opens PDF, Word, Excel, and PPT, and also scans, converts to PDF, and merges or encrypts files. It makes money from ads.

**Why it took off** Wave after wave of paid acquisition in cheap-install places like India, Vietnam, Thailand, and South Africa. Once installed, it puts an entry on the home screen and shows dense ads, so users tap it often and see lots of impressions, and the ad math works out.

**C** **How you could follow it** Don't build another PDF reader. Copy the pipeline (a utility with strong search-term demand + an entry in the system's open-with menu + pure ad monetization + cheap-market acquisition to push category charts + one account per app). Apply it to a utility category that isn't packed yet, provided you know app promotion and can afford to lose money for a few weeks.

C grade: the paid acquisition shows the product makes money, but 2026 new PDF apps that passed a million installs already number 40. The product has no differentiation, and later clones are growing faster than it. Its extra home-screen entry and full-screen ads also sit right on the edge of Google Play policy. What you can learn is the pipeline, not this category. Few people know about it yet

A Google Play account registered to an individual in Indonesia listed a PDF reader called PDF Box at the end of July. In just over three months it has been installed 4.25M times, the version number is still 1.0.1, and it peaked at #18 on India's free Productivity chart. Its product is identical to dozens of similar ones, and the installs were bought in waves. It did one extra thing: after install, it pushes its own entry onto the phone's home screen. Below: how it got going, how the money comes back, and whether you can still get in on this path.

### 220 people tapped "Helpful" on a one-star review

In Oct 14, an Indian user left a one-star review on PDF Box's store page: "As soon as you open it there's a flood of intrusive ads, it messed up my whole phone system, it asks for too many permissions, and opening a document is still painfully slow." By Nov 6, 220 people had tapped "Helpful," making it the top review in the India store (Google Play India, 11-06).

The two reviews below it are five-star: "Works well, can read bills, great performance" (116 found it helpful, 10-12), and "Thanks for updating PDFs for readers" (186 found it helpful, 8-24). One is specific, the other is vague.

"Messed up my whole phone system" is not an exaggeration. A line in CNET Download's description from Aug 29 says it "installs a lightweight desktop launcher for quick access to tools." The permissions listed on third-party APK sites include ones that change the home screen settings of manufacturers like Huawei and OPPO. In other words, once installed it adds its own items to your home screen, which users run into every day.

### What it is

A phone tool that opens any document: PDF, Word, Excel, PPT, TXT, images. It converts paper documents to PDF, images to PDF, merges, splits, adds passwords, and offers simple annotation. The store description is three paragraphs, nearly word-for-word identical to similar templates.

Free, no in-app purchases, labeled "contains ads." The developer is Wah Hub, registered to an Indonesian individual. The support email is Gmail, the privacy policy is hosted on Google Sites, and the website pdfboxdev.top was an empty shell page built in August. This account has only this one app. Whether a single person is behind it or a company is using a personal account as a front can't be told from the outside (I'd guess the latter is quite possible: low-cost front accounts are standard in this business, unverified).

### How the installs came in: stepping up tier by tier

| Date | Total installs | What happened those days |
|---|---|---|
| 8-14 | 564 | Two weeks after launch, almost no one installed it |
| 8-27 | About 100k | One day up 57k |
| 9-10 | About 520k | One day up 200k |
| 9-20 | About 1.03M | Passing one million |
| 10-04 | About 2.15M | Up 477k in a day, and the days before and after were nearly 0 |
| 10-27 | About 3.95M | Mid-October, 7–90k per day |
| 11-06 | 4.25M | Over the last 8 days, 300k in total, dropping to about 30k a day |

Before Oct 27 the numbers are third-party estimates (AppstoreSpy); after that they're Google Play's public install counts. The tier shown on the store page is "1M+", several tiers behind the actual count.

An app that grows organically has a flat curve that bends up slowly. This one has steps: one day it jumps by tens of thousands, the next two or three days barely move, then it jumps again. That's what an ad budget switching on and off looks like (inference, high confidence). I couldn't find which platforms it ran ads on or what the creatives looked like. Searching "PDF Box app" on TikTok returns 0 results, and X has 30 results from the last 0 days. No media outlet has written about it. The only content connected to it is a few Hindi YouTube videos with a couple hundred views each, titled "PDF Box App क्या है" (What is the PDF Box App?). That looks more like people noticing an unfamiliar icon on their phone and searching for what it is.

Other signals fit too:

- **Unusually few ratings.** 4.25M installs and only 4,374 ratings: roughly one person in a thousand installers rates it. Text reviews in the US store number only 6 (Google Play, 11-06).

- **Ratings sit at the extremes.** 2,830 five-star, 514 four-star, 257 two-star, 771 one-star, and 0 three-star. The India store shows a 3.6 rating.

- **It charts only in cheap markets.** 11-06 It appears on the free Productivity chart in 12 countries: #18 in India, #29 in Vietnam, #53 in Thailand, #61 in South Africa, and the rest are Turkey, Brazil, Mexico, Nigeria, and Indonesia, with ranks between 87 and 196. It has never entered the Top Grossing chart in any country.

- **The product doesn't iterate.** Since launch there has been only one version, 1.0.1, and the store listing was changed once in Oct 29. All the money went into paid acquisition, none into the product.

### Where the money comes from

It runs entirely on ads. The math for this kind of app works like this: in places like India and Vietnam, installs are cheap; once a user has the app, every open means several impressions of splash, interstitial, and native ads. Whether it pays back depends on how many ads you can show a user before they uninstall.

So the desktop entry point is the key. Other PDF readers wait for users to open an attachment once in a while. PDF Box parks itself on the desktop, where users run into it every day. More impressions and longer retention mean each install earns back more, so they can keep paying for ads wave after wave (inference). That 220-like one-star review describes exactly how this mechanism feels from the user's side.

I couldn't find how much each install costs, how much ad revenue one user brings in, or how much it has earned overall. What is visible: it ran paid campaigns from late August through early November, stopping and restarting, which suggests that on its own books it's been positive (inference).

### Who it's competing with: 40 apps that launched the same year and passed one million

Apps with PDF or Document in the name, launched in 2026 and already past 1M installs: 40 on Google Play, adding up to 92.8M installs, and another 7M installs in the last 4.79 days (Google Play public data, 11-06). Among the batch launched after June, PDF Box ranks third.

| Competitors | Launched | Installs (11-06) | Last 7 days | Compared with PDF Box |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PDF Reader - Easy PDF(QR Code Scanner.) | 2022 | 433M | 1.85M | Veterans of the same playbook, a hundred times the scale |
| PDF ProX(Office Suite Pro) | 2025-04 | 33M | 1.25M | Same playbook, run a year earlier |
| PDF Reader - Viewer, Edit PDF(Zenstack Labs) | 2026-06 | 5.17M | 120k | Around the same time, a bit bigger, already scaling up paid acquisition |
| Document Scanner PDF Creator / PDF scanner(Radiant Retail LLC) | 2026-08 / 09 | 2.81M / 1.94M | 410k / 480k | One company running two packages, with growth already outpacing it |
| Reampo: PDF Converter(DongRuaLabs) | 2026-10-13 | 860k | 470k | A later batch, still ramping up |
| Adobe Acrobat, WPS, CamScanner | 2010–2011 | 5.8–950M | 150–2.15M | Brand plus subscription, a different business |
| System viewers like Files by Google | Preinstalled | — | — | Free with no ads, but the entry point isn't prominent, and users still search the store for "pdf reader" |

Functionally, none of these apps is distinguishable to users. PDF Box's difference from them lies entirely in operations: which countries to buy in, how much to spend, how ads are placed, and how to keep users from uninstalling. None of that is a moat. Its daily install growth has dropped from around 70–80k in mid-October to 20–30k now, and the later packages are already growing faster than it.

### If it were you

**In one line:** This is a business of ads and acquisition, and anyone can build the product. The PDF category has already produced 2026 million-install apps in 40 year, so it's crowded. And the one move PDF Box added (planting an entry on the home screen) happens to be the move most likely to get an account banned by Google.

**Who it suits:** Teams that have already run utility or hyper-casual game campaigns through Google App Campaigns, Mintegral, AppLovin, or similar channels, who understand how to place AdMob waterfall, splash, and interstitial ads, who have budget to lose for a few weeks first (figure tens of thousands of dollars minimum), and who are used to running multiple accounts and multiple packages to spread risk. Teams in India, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Turkey that already mass-produce utility apps have the easiest time.

**Who it doesn't suit:** Indie developers who have never run ads and are counting on organic store search; anyone hoping to break out by being "better and ad-free" (users can't tell you apart from the sixth PDF app, and this audience won't pay for it); anyone who can't accept that the account could be banned one day and revenue go to zero.

**How to do it:** Don't build the #41 PDF reader. The part worth copying is the pipeline behind it: a utility with a strong search-intent keyword, hooked into the system "open with" entry point, ad-only monetization, a personal developer account plus a shell website and a Google Sites privacy page, one account per app, and validating a category every two or three months. Run that pipeline on a utility category with high search volume that hasn't been swamped by dozens of apps yet. Tactics like desktop launchers and full-screen ads can lift revenue, but they sit close to Google Play's disruptive-ads and device-abuse policies. If you use them, be ready to swap accounts at any time.

**How to acquire users:** Mainly Google App Campaigns, starting in countries like India, Vietnam, Thailand, and South Africa, where installs are cheap and the category-chart bar is low. Push into the top 20 of the free Productivity chart, then pick up some organic traffic from chart placement and search. Write the search terms straight into the title (its subtitle is "PDF Reader & Tool"), and stack keywords separately for each language.

**Timing:** This category has no deadline. People keep coming in and dropping out. But the system's built-in PDF viewers get better every year, and users who "just want to open something once" will keep shrinking. Google's crackdown on disruptive ads also comes in waves, and the window could close at any time.

**Signs you've read this wrong:** First, if PDF Box's installs flatline for a week or two after it stops buying, and its chart rank drops across the board, the desktop entry didn't keep users, and the economics don't work. Second, if it or similar packages get delisted or their accounts banned, the window for this move has closed. Third, the reverse: if newer packages such as Radiant Retail and DongRuaLabs, which launched between 9 and October, keep adding hundreds of thousands a week over the next month, the business still works, you just have to buy cheaper than they do.

Where users come from

- Inferred **Paid acquisition (ad networks / Google App Campaigns etc.)** : install curve jumps in steps (9-10 +200k, 10-04 +477k, 10-08 +210k); ratings/installs about 0.1%, only 6 written reviews, ratings split between 1 and 5 stars; targets low-CPI emerging markets; ad library doesn't track it, platforms and creatives unverified

- **Confirmed** **Store search (pdf reader keyword)** : title 'PDF Reader & Tool' targets the keyword; charted in 12 countries' Productivity Top Free, best in India at #18 (googleplay library chart_rank)

- **Confirmed** **Desktop launcher / high ad density to lift retention and monetization** : CNET Download says it installs a desktop launcher; APK site permission lists include Huawei and OPPO launcher WRITE_SETTINGS; the top-liked India negative review (220 likes) complains about ad bombardment and disrupting the system

- **Confirmed** **YouTube Hindi 'what is this app' videos** : videos like 'PDF Box App क्या है' get only 200–300 views, very small volume

## Why PDF Box: PDF Reader & Tool (com.wah.pdfreader.boxtool) managed to take off

> Channel: Google Play | Developer: Wah Hub (store listing contact MOH. KURNIADI HENDRY, Indonesia, Gmail 1wahab.samsudin@gmail.com) | Launched 2026-07-31 | Research date 2026-11-06

### Bottom line

This is not an app that took off on product or word of mouth. It's one of the better-performing entries in a batch of 'PDF reader + all-format document viewer' reskins on Google Play over the past 2026 years: **paid user acquisition and ad monetization (including app-open/interstitial ads and a desktop launcher entry point for extra impressions)** , targeting emerging markets like India, Vietnam, Thailand and South Africa. Compared with similar apps, it just buys more and holds up better; the product itself has no differentiation.

### 1. Data: how it grew

- **Cumulative global installs 4,252,192** (googleplay library app_snap, 2026-11-06), with 7 new in the last 301,512 days. The store page still shows the tier '1M+' (tiers lag the actual count).

- **Curve since launch** (googleplay library app_day_ext, AppstoreSpy estimates): 8-14 had just 564 installs → passed 8-27k → passed 100M → 9-20 1M → 10-04 a single observation jumped 477k to 2.15M → 10-27 3.95M → 11-06 4.25M. Growth comes in **discrete jumps** (9-10 +200k, 10-04 +477k, 10-08 +210k, 10-21 +170k), separated by days of almost 0, which looks like waves of paid buys, not the smooth curve of organic word of mouth. After mid-October, daily new installs dropped from 7–90k to 2–30k, so spend is being pulled back.

- **Very few ratings** : 4,374 ratings / 4.25M installs ≈ 1.0 ratings per thousand installs; only 6 written reviews (US listing, app_snap). Rating distribution is only 1-star and 5-star (11-06 histogram [771, 257, 0, 514, 2830]), and the India listing shows 3.6. Paid-acquisition users rate sparsely and polarize, a classic pattern.

- **Charts** : only in the Productivity Top Free chart of 12 countries, best in India at #18, Vietnam #26, Thailand #46, South Africa #51, the rest between #85–#196 (googleplay library chart_rank, 10-29 to 11-06). **Never charted in any Top Grossing chart** . No in-app purchases (offers_iap = False), labeled 'Contains ads', so all money comes from ads.

- **Version 1.0.1** : since launch there's only been this one version number (app_snap; CNET Download records the update to 8-29 1.0.1), and the store listing was updated once 10-29. The product is essentially not iterated.

### 2. Competitors: a packed red ocean

'PDF reader' on Google Play is the textbook paid-acquisition utility category. A rough search by title containing pdf/document finds **2026 apps launched in 1 that have already passed 40M installs, totaling 92.8M installs and 7M new in the last 4.79 days** (googleplay library app_profile, 11-06). Among apps launched after 2026-06, PDF Box ranks #3 in this group.

| Product | Developer | Launched | Installs (11-06) | past 7 days | How PDF Box differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Adobe Acrobat Reader | Adobe | 2010 | 945M | 1.51M | Legit, subscription monetization, frequent on Top Grossing |
| WPS Office | WPS | 2011 | 832M | 2.15M | Full Office suite, subscription |
| CamScanner | INTSIG | 2010 | 582M | 1.6M | Scan-focused, subscription |
| PDF Reader - Easy PDF | QR Code Scanner. | 2022 | 433M | 1.85M | Same paid-acquisition + ads reskin playbook from an older player, a hundred times the scale |
| PDF Reader – PDF Viewer | EZTech Apps | 2022 | 252M | 1.26M | Same play, veteran operator |
| PDF ProX | Office Suite Pro | 2025-04 | 33M | 1.25M | Same play, took off last year |
| PDF Reader - Viewer, Edit PDF | Zenstack Labs | 2026-06 | 5.17M | 120k | Same play, same period, slightly bigger |
| PDF Editor & PDF Reader | LuminousByte | 2026-06 | 2.45M | 270k | Same approach, same period |
| Document Scanner PDF Creator / PDF scanner | Radiant Retail LLC | 2026-08/09 | 2.81M / 1.94M | 410k / 480k | One developer, two packages, growing faster than PDF Box |
| Reampo: PDF Converter | DongRuaLabs | 2026-10-13 | 860k | 470k | Newer batch, still ramping |
| Built into the system | Google Files / Drive's PDF viewing | — | Preinstalled | — | Free and ad-free, but not prominent enough |

(Data: googleplay library app_profile, 2026-11-06)

Functionally these apps are nearly identical: view PDF/Word/Excel/PPT, scan with camera, image-to-PDF, merge and split, encryption. PDF Box's listing copy follows the same template.

### 3. Growth tactics

- **Paid acquisition (inferred, strong)** : evidence includes step-jump install curves, a ratings/installs ratio of about 0.1%, sparse and polarized reviews, a focus on cheap-CPI markets like India, Vietnam, Thailand, South Africa, Brazil and Mexico, and monetization entirely through ads. Apps like this typically buy 'PDF reader' scenario traffic through Google App Campaigns, Meta, Unity/Mintegral/AppLovin and similar networks, with users pulled in by ads along the lines of 'you need a PDF reader to open this file'. **Our ad library doesn't track it** (the googleads library watch table doesn't include this package name; the list only covers products that have charted in Top Grossing), so the ad platforms and creatives are unverified.

- **Store search / file-opening intent** : users in emerging markets who receive PDF/Office attachments search 'pdf reader' and install one, and the keyword-stuffed name 'PDF Reader & Tool' is built to capture that term.

- **Desktop launcher entry point / ad density** : CNET Download's description says it 'installs a lightweight desktop launcher for quick access to tools', and permissions listed on third-party APK sites include WRITE_SETTINGS for launchers from manufacturers like Huawei and OPPO. The top-liked India negative review (220 people found it helpful, 10-14) says 'as soon as you open it there are ads everywhere, and it messes up the whole phone and asks for too many permissions'. This is a common tactic for such apps to raise retention and ad impressions (desktop shortcuts / persistent entry points), and it's central to monetization.

- **YouTube Hindi 'what is this app' videos** : a few 'PDF Box App क्या है / Kaise Use Kare' videos with 200–300 views (e.g. from the Gaming Antidote channel). Videos like this are usually mass-produced SEO content and suggest some users found the app on their phone and searched for it. Volume is tiny, not a channel.

- **Social media / creators** : none on TikTok (TikHub search for 'PDF Box app' returns nothing) or X (x-radar: 30 posts in the last 0 days). No media coverage.

### 4. Why it charted

1. **The category itself is a paid-acquisition money printer** : emerging-market Android users are numerous, document opening is a basic need, the system viewer isn't prominent, so intent to install a 'PDF reader' is strong and CPI is cheap; ad monetization (app-open, interstitial, native) can earn back the cost. 2026 years, 40 similar apps launched that have passed one million installs.

2. **Good buying cadence** : volume started ramping at the end of August, with several big waves of spend from 9 through October, scaling from 50k to 4M in two months.

3. **Right market choice** : India first, with Vietnam, Thailand and South Africa next, all low-CPI markets with heavy PDF attachment use (bills, schools, government documents). Negative reviews also mention 'can read bills'.

4. **Desktop entry point plus high ad density lift per-user revenue** : this is likely the precondition for ROI to stay positive and for the spend to continue (inferred).

### 5. Differentiation

**No product differentiation.** Features, copy and icon style are the same as dozens of rivals. Its only difference from them lies in operations: which markets to buy, how much, how ads are placed, how retention is handled. Users can't perceive these differences, so its growth can be replaced at any time by the next batch of identical packages (Radiant Retail, DongRuaLabs and others launched in 9–October, already growing faster than it); daily installs have been slowing since mid-October.

### 6. How many people have seen it

- Revenue isn't public: no TrustMRR, no founder sharing numbers, no media or X coverage; only auto-indexed sources like APK mirror sites, AppBrain, Similarweb and appfigures chart pages.

- But the 'PDF reader paid acquisition' playbook is well known in the industry, and new copies of similar packages appear every month. **The product itself is unknown, and the playbook is already crowded.**

### 7. Copycats

Not really 'copying it' but parallel operators running the same model: Radiant Retail LLC (two packages, launched in September, 41–480k each over the last 7 days), DongRuaLabs Reampo (launched 10-13, 470k in 7 days), Office Tools Pro, HOSENR DEV, Suffron PDF Pilot and others (googleplay library).

### 8. What others can borrow

- The combination of a utility with 'essential need + strong intent + emerging market' and ad monetization can still reach millions of installs in 2–3 months in 2026; the key question is whether per-user ad revenue (eCPM × impressions × retention) covers CPI.

- Reskin matrix: one package per developer account, spreading risk (this developer has only 1 package; an APK site mentions another app from the same developer, 'Live Weather', which isn't in the library, possibly removed or never charted).

- Risks: desktop launcher, excessive permissions and intrusive ads sit on the edge of Google Play policy (Disruptive Ads / Device and Network Abuse policies), so the account could be banned at any time; packages like this typically have short lifespans.

### 9. Still unclear

- The specific ad platforms and creatives (our ad library doesn't track it), spend amounts, eCPM and profit are all unknown.

- Whether 'Wah Hub' is an individual or a team, and whether it's a matrix company operating through an Indonesian individual's account (domain pdfboxdev.top registered in early August, privacy policy hosted on Google Sites, Gmail support address, typical low-cost shell account): unverified.

- The exact form of the launcher feature and whether it violates policy: APK not tested.
