WANDOO: Offline Hiking Maps · SimpleInnovation

How a period-tracking app factory built a hiking map into 15k installs

What it is An offline hiking map app: dozens of hand-picked trails in Poland's mountains, automatic route generation by distance and difficulty, offline navigation, no sign-up, paid subscription.

Why it took off It hasn't really taken off yet. The volume was manufactured: keyword-stuffed store listings in 8 languages, comparison articles and FAQs written three months before launch, the same copy pushed repeatedly in Facebook groups and Reddit, and small-country navigation grossing charts with low entry barriers, where a handful of subscriptions is enough to get on them.

CHow you could play it Don't build a hiking map. The category is already packed with free or long-standing products like AllTrails, Mapy.com and Organic Maps. The useful part is its cold-start playbook; if you really want to get into outdoors, pick a narrow niche that the big platforms cover poorly and go deep on content.

C grade: the playbook is worth copying, but the product has no real edge. Free and established rivals already cover Polish trails thoroughly, 15k installs look mostly pushed rather than earned, and there are no word-of-mouth signs. Following with a clone isn't worth it. Almost nobody knows about it yet

WANDOO is an offline hiking map app. It launched in July, and in the first week of November its Google Play installs rose from 12.5k to 15k. It also hit #16 on the Poland App Store Top Grossing Navigation chart. Behind it is SimpleInnovation, which built near 50M installs with subscription tools like a period tracker and a diary app. The product itself is nothing new. What's worth studying is how someone with an ASO background used a small-language market, a few dozen hand-made routes and a search-led strategy to launch a new app from zero, and why there's little room left for latecomers on this path.

The first five-star review was written by the operator

On 2026 Sep 10, a five-star review appeared on WANDOO's Poland App Store page under the title "Great for offline hikes", with one line of body text:

"Simple, clean and easy to use. Offline maps are especially useful when hiking with poor signal."

It's signed Aliaksei Kupreyeu. On LinkedIn he lists himself as "Mobile Growth Expert | ASO & User Acquisition". He previously worked at Digitalchemy, a Belarusian utility-app factory, is based in Wrocław, Poland, and holds his own iOS developer account. He also posts for WANDOO on Facebook.

Those 14 Poland reviews average 4.93 stars (App Store, 11-06). Scroll down and nearly all are in English: "Used it for a weekend trip to the mountains", "Great routes", "Thanks guys!". Only one is in Polish: "Super apka". For an app aimed at the Polish market, most of the early reviews being in English suggests they came from the team and their circle. That's not unusual, but it shows that so far WANDOO's volume has been made, not earned from users.

What it is: hand-picked routes plus offline navigation

The features are standard: a few dozen hand-picked routes (five Polish national parks: Tatras, Pieniny, Bieszczady, Table Mountain, Karkonosze, plus a small patch of Germany's Saxon Switzerland), automatic route generation by start point, distance and difficulty, offline maps, GPS recording, achievements and sharing. There's also a web route planner: plan on the web, then open the phone at the trailhead and walk. No sign-up required, 8 interface languages. The November 6 1.8.0 release added "all officially marked trails in Poland".

The website homepage says "no account, no switching between half a dozen apps", and the FAQ says there's no paywall. But the store listing shows in-app purchases from $3.49 to $54.99 (Google Play, 11-06). We haven't verified which features are paid.

The developer, SimpleInnovation, makes subscription tools as its core business: Period Tracker 33.4M installs, Daily Diary 12.2M, Interval Timer 2.09M (Google Play installs, 11-06). A third-party estimate puts the account's monthly in-app revenue at $26k to $199k (AppGazers, for the whole account, not WANDOO alone). WANDOO is its first move into the outdoors category.

Where the volume comes from

Start with the curve (Google Play installs):

DateTotal installs
10-2912,454
10-3113,520
11-0314,720
11-0415,013

From launch to late October, installs averaged about 110 a day; in the most recent week, about 430 a day, 4 times faster. But November is the off-season for hiking in Central Europe, so organic word of mouth is unlikely to suddenly kick in now. Over the same period, the company's Contraction Timer went from 10,451 to 13,352 in installs, with nearly the same curve. (Inference: the company is likely pushing several new apps at once with the same method, possibly Google app ads. We didn't find the creatives; unverified.)

We can see four tactics:

  • Keyword stuffing in the store listing. The English description repeats hiking app, trail maps, gps hiking, trails offline and free hiking app dozens of times, and a stray Russian word, "доступными", was left in, a sign it was mass-generated. Titles are written separately for each language based on local search terms: German "Wanderwege Offline", Spanish "Rutas de Senderismo", Polish "Szlaki Piesze Offline".
  • Search content built three months before launch. The official blog started posting in April, 3 months before the app went live: beginner hiking guides, gear checklists, "WANDOO vs AllTrails", "Best Hiking App with Offline Maps". The FAQ is written as Q&A, such as "Is WANDOO one of the best hiking apps?", aimed at search engines and AI answers. Each hand-made route (such as "Morskie Oko Classic") has its own landing page.
  • The same copy pasted across Facebook groups and Reddit. The line "We're a small team of people who… made it the way we personally wanted hiking apps to feel" appears in at least 6 groups, including the 77k-member Ice Age Trail group, and even a northern Maine snowmobile group. On Reddit, someone asked a question about Gaia GPS, and a reply underneath suggested "try WANDOO Hiking".
  • Almost no short-form video. There are a few AI-generated YouTube Shorts with 0 likes in total. TikTok returns no relevant videos, and nobody on X mentions it.

Take the charts with a grain of salt. It hit #11-03 on the Poland App Store's Navigation Top Grossing chart, then fell to #103 from #16,11-06; on the Argentina Navigation Top Grossing chart it dropped from #16 to #101 (App Store, 10-28 to 11-06). Category grossing charts in small countries are easy to crack: a few subscriptions can put you on them, and then you slide down a little more every day. On Play it only charted on the Poland Maps & Navigation Top Free chart, falling from #94 to #196 between 10-30 and 11-04.

Who it's competing with

Hiking maps are a category that has been crowded for years. In Poland alone, WANDOO's competitors came first and cover more (Google Play installs, 11-06):

ProductInstallsvs. WANDOO
AllTrails52.3MThe world's largest user route library; offline maps require payment
komoot44.2MStrong in German-speaking markets, route planning plus cycling
Wikiloc17.3MTracks uploaded by users worldwide
Mapy.com14.6MCzech-made; the most complete official trails and offline maps for Central Europe (including Poland), essentially free
Organic Maps7.65M, 7 days +156kOpen source, completely free, with trails
Hiking Map Poland(Mapa Turystyczna)1.77M, rated 4.6 with 22.6k ratingsLong-established Polish app; nationwide trails, very strong web version

What WANDOO uniquely has is only those few dozen well-written hand-made routes and the "generate by distance and difficulty in one tap" feature. The all-Poland official trails it just added, Mapy.com and Mapa Turystyczna have had for a decade. This week its install gain (+2,559) is even larger than Mapa Turystyczna's (+1,725). The reason isn't a better product; it's better traffic work.

If it were you

One-line verdict: Don't copy a hiking map app. What's worth taking is the playbook: how a team with a ready-made subscription template can spend very little to push a new vertical to its first tens of thousands of installs.

Who it's for: small teams that already have a subscription tool portfolio and want to expand into a new category, or people who understand ASO and want to practice in a smaller-language market. What you take away is this workflow: pick a smaller-language market where the big players haven't seriously localized, make dozens of hand-made pieces of content, and have each one double as a store screenshot and an SEO landing page; for the first three months before launch, write articles and FAQ-style Q&A like "X vs the industry leader" and "best X with offline"; write the store page title for each of the 8 languages using local search terms; for cold start, comment in Facebook groups and under Reddit help threads in the voice of "a small team that built the thing they wanted to use".

Who it's not for: indie developers who want to build a hiking map product that keeps users. Map data and offline tiles carry ongoing costs, and free Organic Maps and nearly free Mapy.com have already pushed users' willingness to pay to zero. AllTrails and komoot have over a decade of user route libraries that one person can't catch up to.

How to do it (if you insist on going into outdoors): don't build "yet another full-featured map". Pick a narrow niche where the big platforms are weak and people will still pay: winter routes and avalanche info for a single mountain range, hiking with kids, accessible trails, pilgrimage routes in one language. Go deep on content and use open-source map data.

How to get users: store keywords and search content come first; WANDOO has already proven these bring traffic. Low-threshold small-country grossing charts can serve as social proof. Facebook group and Reddit replies cost nothing, but if you post the same copy too often, group admins will delete it, so vary the wording.

Before when: No rush. Hiking demand is seasonal. If you want to test it, get content and store pages live before April 3, the peak season, since that's when organic traffic actually shows whether it works.

What would mean you got it wrong: if by next year's hiking season WANDOO starts getting real user reviews in batches on Google Play, charts outside Poland, and gains of over ten thousand installs a week, that would suggest the "small-language hand-made routes" angle has more user value than it appears, and is worth re-evaluating. Conversely, if installs flatline the moment paid acquisition stops over these winter months, that would suggest most of the 15k were bought.

Where users come from
  • Verified: Store ASO (multilingual keywords): the Play English description repeats hiking app / trail maps / gps hiking / trails offline dozens of times. Titles differ by language (EN: Offline Hiking Maps, DE: Wanderwege Offline / Wandern & Routenplaner, ES: Planificador de Rutas / Rutas de Senderismo, PL: Szlaki Piesze Offline). 8 interface languages in total. The Play page gets organic search traffic from "wandoo aplikacja szlaki górskie" with utm_source=google&utm_medium=organic. The operator, Aliaksei Kupreyeu, describes himself on LinkedIn as Mobile Growth Expert | ASO & User Acquisition, and previously worked at Digitalchemy, a Belarusian utility-app factory.
  • Verified Facebook groups / Reddit spam: Aliaksei Kupreyeu posted the same message, "We're a small team… hiking app called WANDOO Hiking. We made it the way we personally wanted hiking apps to feel: simple, focused on trail navigation and offline maps…", in at least 6 Facebook groups including Ice Age Trail (77k members), HiiKER, Hiking in Europe, Northern Maine snowmobile, and accessible hiking for people with disabilities. On Reddit r/backpacking, a thread asking about Gaia GPS had a reply saying "You could try WANDOO Hiking".
  • Verified SEO / writing for AI search (GEO): wandooapp.com started publishing blog posts on 2026-04, about 3 months before the app launched: WANDOO vs AllTrails, Best Hiking App with Offline Maps, beginner hiking, gear checklists. The FAQ page is all Q&A in the form "Is WANDOO one of the best hiking apps?". Each curated route has its own landing page (/discover/1-morskie-oko-classic), and there are Polish and German sites.
  • Verified Short video / Instagram: YouTube @simpleinnovationapps posted an AI-generated Short, "WANDOO: Szlaki Piesze Offline. 3 things I do" (0 likes). Instagram @wandoo.hiking has posts (2026-09-07). TikTok turns up no official account and no related videos. Volume is tiny.
  • Inferred Paid acquisition (likely Google App Campaigns): From late October into early November, in the hiking off-season, daily installs rose from about 110 to about 430. The iOS Poland navigation grossing chart spiked to 16 over the same stretch, then fell back. Meta's ad library has no Page for WANDOO or SimpleInnovation. Our library only tracks advertisers on our list, so this doesn't prove they didn't run ads. There's no direct evidence.

Why WANDOO: Offline Hiking Maps (com.wandoo.hiking) is growing

Research date: 2026-11-06. Data sources: googleplay / appstore / metaads libraries (agent-im server), iTunes lookup, Jina / Exa search and page text, TikHub, x-radar.

Bottom line

It's still small, so it hasn't really broken out. 15k installs is what an operator with an ASO and paid acquisition background can build from a few things: a local Polish trail library, keyword stuffing in 8 languages, the same message posted across Facebook groups and Reddit, and FAQs and blog posts written for AI search. The product has no hard differentiation against AllTrails, Mapy.com, or Hiking Map Poland. The late-October speedup came during the hiking off-season, which looks more like ads or ASO working than word of mouth.

What it is

  • Developer: SimpleInnovation (LLC, iOS developer id 1479770962). Its main business is subscription lifestyle tools: Period Tracker and Calendar with 33.4M installs, Daily Diary 12.2M, Interval Timer 2.09M, Luli baby sleep 92k, Contraction Timer 13k. The library shows 7 apps with 48.4M installs combined (googleplay library 2026-11-06). The website claims 6M monthly users and 20+ languages (simpleinnovation.us). AppGazers estimates the whole Play account's in-app purchase revenue at $26K–199K per month (appgazers.com/reports/developers/android-6197543456908830701).
  • WANDOO is this developer's first outdoor app. It's on Play (2026-07-10) and iOS (id 6757917432, 2026-07-27; iOS 17+, also runs on visionOS). Features: hand-picked routes, auto-generated routes by distance, elevation gain, or duration, offline maps, GPS tracking, achievements, sharing. There's also a web route planner at wandooapp.com. No sign-up needed. In-app purchases run $3.49–54.99.
  • Route coverage (from the website FAQ): five Polish national parks, the High and West Tatras, Pieniny, Bieszczady, Table Mountain, and Karkonosze, plus German Sauerland (Ramsbeck, Meschede, Hennesee, Diemelsee, Arnsberg). The 1.8.0 version (2026-11-06) added "all officially marked trails in Poland" and points of interest with photos.
  • The interface is available in 8 languages: English, Czech, French, German, Polish, Russian, Spanish, and Ukrainian.

How to read this: the grossing charts for navigation apps in smaller countries have a low bar. The Argentina curve, with a steady daily slide down the chart after a burst of subscriptions, is typical. The Poland curve only shows a handful of subscriptions and very little revenue. Over the same period, the sister app Contraction Timer's install curve looked almost identical (10,451 → 13,352), which suggests the company is launching new apps the same way.

This category is crowded. Poland alone has a long-established local app (Mapa Turystyczna), the Czech Mapy.com, and the open-source Organic Maps. All of them had official trail data earlier, and more of it.

Growth levers (ranked by strength of evidence)

  1. Store ASO (confirmed): The English Play description repeats hiking app / trail maps / hike map / gps hiking / trails offline / free hiking app dozens of times, and it even contains a stray Russian word, "доступными", which suggests batch-generated copy. Titles vary by language: English Offline Hiking Maps / Offline Hiking Trails; German Wanderwege Offline, Wandern & Routenplaner; Spanish Planificador de Rutas, Rutas de Senderismo; Polish Szlaki Piesze Offline. One Play link in search results includes utm_source=google&utm_medium=organic&utm_term=wandoo aplikacja szlaki górskie.
  2. The operator (confirmed): The Facebook poster is Aliaksei Kupreyeu. His LinkedIn headline is "Mobile Growth Expert | ASO & User Acquisition". His work history includes Digitalchemy, a Belarusian utility app factory. He is based in Wrocław, Poland (pl.linkedin.com/in/aliakseikupreyeu, humantic.ai). He also has a separate iOS developer account for an AI nutrition app, Nutrizor. WANDOO charting on the Belarus iOS navigation grossing chart, and its Russian and Ukrainian interface, fit this background.
  3. Facebook / Reddit spam (confirmed): The same message, "We're a small team of people who… hiking app called WANDOO Hiking. We made it the way we personally wanted hiking apps to feel: simple, focused on trail navigation and offline maps, without…", appears in at least 6 groups, including Ice Age Trail (77k members), HiiKER: The Hiking Maps App, Hiking in Europe, Northern Maine snowmobile, and accessible hiking for people with disabilities (from Jina search snippets). On Reddit r/backpacking, a reply under a Gaia GPS help thread says "You could try WANDOO Hiking, which supports offline map areas and offline route planning."
  4. SEO / GEO (confirmed): wandooapp.com began publishing blog posts 2026-04, about 3 months before the app launched. The articles cover beginner hiking, safety, gear checklists, WANDOO vs AllTrails, Best Hiking App with Offline Maps, and Hike Planner. The FAQ is Q&A in the form "Is WANDOO one of the best hiking apps?", clearly written for search engines and AI answers. Each curated route has its own landing page, and there are /pl and /de subsites.
  5. Short video (tiny volume): YouTube @simpleinnovationapps posted AI-generated Shorts with 0 likes. Instagram @wandoo.hiking has posts. Searching TikTok for "wandoo hiking" returns nothing relevant (TikHub). X corpus: 0 posts (x-radar, 90 days).
  6. Paid acquisition (unconfirmed): Installs sped up 4× during the off-season. The iOS grossing chart spiked and fell back over the same period, which looks like Google App Campaigns. Meta's ad library has no Page for WANDOO or SimpleInnovation, but our library only tracks advertisers on our list, so not finding them there doesn't mean they didn't advertise.

Why it's growing (at its current scale)

  • It picked a local gap: a Polish-language version built on hand-curated Tatra trails. Its iOS Poland ratings are the most numerous and it charts in Poland, so Poland is clearly its home market.
  • The operator comes from ASO and paid acquisition. The store listing, multilingual keywords, and SEO landing pages are all designed to capture search traffic.
  • SimpleInnovation's existing subscription template let it take payments from day one, and it reached several small-country grossing charts quickly.
  • Cold start came from spam posts, which cost almost nothing.
  • No sign of word of mouth: Play has 0 reviews, iOS has about 20 ratings in total, and no one is organically talking about it on content platforms.

Differentiation

The app's own pitch is "simple, no sign-up, one tap to generate routes by distance, difficulty, or duration, hand-picked routes you can just go hike." The only thing it truly has that others don't is a few dozen well-written English hand-curated routes. Offline maps and official trails already exist in Mapy.com, Hiking Map Poland, and Organic Maps, which are more complete and cheaper (Organic Maps is free). The website says "no account or paywall," but the store listing has $3.49–54.99 in-app purchases, so what it says publicly and how it charges don't quite match. Differentiation isn't what drives the growth. Distribution tactics and the company's resources are.

How many people have seen it

Few people know about it yet: no media coverage, no discussion on X or TikTok, and no public revenue figures. The only public estimate is AppGazers' figure for the whole developer account, not for WANDOO alone. No copycats have turned up.

What to borrow

  1. Toolfactory's new vertical: pick a small-language market (Poland), build a batch of hand-curated content that doubles as a landing page, then fill in keywords with store pages in 8 languages.
  2. Get the blog and Q&A-style FAQ ready 3 months before launch, to capture search terms like "X vs AllTrails" and "best offline hiking app" and AI answers.
  3. Seed recommendations in Facebook groups and Reddit help threads, in the voice of "a small team built the app they wanted to use."
  4. Category charts in small countries have very low thresholds, so they work as social proof.

Still unclear

  • Which countries installs come from, and whether there is paid acquisition (Google UAC), are both unverified.
  • 15k installs yet no Play rating shown; retention and paid conversion are unclear.
  • The website says there's no paywall, but the store lists in-app purchases; which features are paid is unverified.
  • Whether Aliaksei Kupreyeu is an employee or partner of SimpleInnovation is unverified.
  • WANDOO's revenue on its own is unknown.
