"Do I already have this?": a Japanese indie dev's merch-tracking app, free with no charge, 60k downloads in three-plus months
What it is A merch-tracking app for Japanese fan culture, built by an indie dev: snap photos of acrylic keychains, stands, plushies and photocards, log counts and prices, and swap in your oshi's theme color. Completely free.
Why it took off The name is itself a store search term; fans who search "推し活 グッズ管理" find it right away. It solves one annoyance, "do I own this, and how many?", the UI is shareable, and the dev ships fixes fast based on reviews.
BHow you could follow Don't build another one in the Japan store. Take the same idea to China's goods-collecting (谷子) community or the global K-pop photocard scene, use search terms like "谷子管理", build monetization in from the start, and share bill screenshots on Xiaohongshu and Bilibili.
- Data (updated daily) · first launch 2026-10-16 · 11-07 installs 4,564
Android · Total installs worldwide Data 2026-10-29 → 2026-11-07 (10 days, 10 observations). Google's detail page only refreshes install counts every other day, so a flat day doesn't mean nobody installed.
MeMory is a fan-goods organizer app built by Japanese indie dev Koumei Watase: acrylic keychains, acrylic stands, plushies, photocards. Snap a photo, log the count and price, and switch to your oshi's theme color. It has no in-app purchases, no real ad spend, and no creator promotion. It took off for two reasons: its name is the exact term users search for in the store, and the whole app does one thing, "how many do I have," and does it charmingly. Anyone can copy that playbook, but the app itself doesn't make money, and over twenty same-named apps have already crowded into the Japan store. Anyone who wants to follow needs a different circle and has to figure out the revenue model first.
A review that says "I wish I'd had this sooner"
In 2026 November 2, a Japanese user gave it five stars on the App Store with the title "もっと早く使いたかった" (I wish I'd used it sooner):
"Started using it yesterday and it's great. This is exactly the kind of app I wanted!"
The same day another user gave three stars, and their first line says what the app replaced:
"I used to track these in my phone's notes app. Now I can store photos of merch, log counts, add notes and record amounts, and see everything at a glance. Really useful. I've wanted something like this for a long time."
Another review from Aug 30 spells out the use case more concretely: "When I'm out and want to buy merch, I often can't remember how many I already have. Same with CDs, I can check which ones I own in seconds, so I end up buying doubles far less."
This is the problem MeMory is built for. The store description says it plainly: "これ持ってたっけ?" "何個買ったっけ?" (Do I have this? How many did I buy again?).
What it is
It opens without registration. Take a photo of a piece of merch and the app removes the background, then you fill in count, price, purchase date and notes. Items are sorted into "pages" (usually one character) and "categories" (keychains, stands, photocards), and each category shows total count and total spend. You can swap the background to your oshi's theme color and change fonts, with settings per page. Each saved page becomes a "pain wall" you can screenshot and share.
The iOS version launched in 2026 June 9, and in July 24 the developer announced the launch on the official X account @MeMory_app_. Data syncs via iCloud, it is completely free, and there are no in-app purchases (the website lists the price as free). The Android version didn't arrive until 16 October, and its Google Play page lists ads.
How much it grew
- iOS: ranked 4.7 in the Japan store, 645 ratings (App Store page, 11-06). In 16 October 17 it surged to #11 then #12 on Japan's Lifestyle free chart, and reached #134 on the overall free chart at the same time (APPLION ranking page). The X account bio said "10,000DL milestone" in August and now reads "60,000DL milestone." 645 ratings against 60k downloads is a rating rate of about 1%, which is plausible, so the self-reported numbers are broadly believable.
- Android: Google Play installs 10-29 is 202,10-30 is 1,891,11-03 is 4,317,11-06 is 4,564, up 2,673 in one week. It peaked at #11-02 on Japan's Lifestyle free chart and slid back to #66,11-06, then #135; on Taiwan's Lifestyle free chart it ranked #10-29 at #32.
- The two days iOS surged: the Android launch and the iOS 1.9.0 update landed on the same day. Which one pushed it up can't be determined (inference: the launch post may have spread on X, or the store may have featured it).
The third-party estimator AppInsider's model says the two platforms together bring in over 500 downloads a day, roughly 38% from store search and 47% from store browsing (model estimates, not measured).
Where users come from: the name is the search term
The app's full name is "推し活・グッズ管理 - MeMory." When Japanese fans look for a merch tracker, they type "推し活" and "グッズ管理" in the store, and it shows up immediately. One record shows it ranking first on iOS for the search "推し活 グッズ 管理" (unverified; Apple's search API couldn't confirm it).
Other channels are small:
| Channel | What we saw |
|---|---|
| X official account | 201 posts; the launch post got 156 likes. Regular posts are update notices and how-to guides, plus apology posts like "カテゴリ管理についてのお知らせ" (notice about category management) |
| Friend referrals | Reviews include "a friend recommended it 1 months ago"; uses are spreading too: some track cards from arcade machines, some track "迷子グッズ" (merch to return to its owner when traded), some track manga volumes |
| Multilingual | The September 24 version added English, Traditional Chinese and Korean at once. On Taiwan's iOS Lifestyle chart it reached the top 100 |
| Android | Users pushed for it on X; the pinned post says "たくさんのご要望をいただいていた" (we received many requests). The iOS bundle ID suffix is .kmp, which means Kotlin Multiplatform: one codebase for both platforms, so the Android version didn't take much extra work. |
| TikTok, ads | TikTok has a search-term page called "グッズ管理アプリ Memory," which shows people are searching, but no viral video naming it was found. AppInsider's model says paid traffic makes up 15%; this is unverified. |
The demand was already there. On TikTok, videos like "推し活グッズ" and "グッズ収納" routinely reach millions of views (for example, one from @willertravel hit 1.85M, and one from @rin_oshikatsu100 hit 1.84M), but they all show physical storage: shelves, clear bags, itabags. Digital tracking has been an empty space.
Why users stay: fast iteration, and the developer replies to bad reviews personally
The review section is basically this app's feature request list: categories can't be manually reordered, you can't edit a count by tapping it, the totals are wrong (one user calculated 49,664 yen with a calculator while the app showed 332,606 yen), people want to copy one item's info, and they want iPad support. From September to November it shipped 1.6 to 1.10 five versions, and each update note says "ご要望の反映" (incorporated your requests). The latest, 1.10.0, even rolled back a broken interaction: "グッズ長押しで並び替え&編集モードへの遷移に戻しました" (long-press to sort and enter edit mode, restored to the original behavior). The developer replies to negative reviews one by one in the App Store.
So the 4.7 rating isn't only because the features are good. Users see their feedback being acted on, which makes them willing to leave good reviews and recommend the app to friends.
Who it's competing with
| Product | Scale | How MeMory differs |
|---|---|---|
| Oshibana(booklista) | Claims 1.1M to 1.2M cumulative downloads | oshi-life all-in-one: anniversaries, schedules and community are all there, and merch is just one "gallery" page, backed by a big company |
| monoca / monoca 2 | monoca Japan 9,949 reviews | Tracks anything, not made for fandom; the free version only allows 100 items and you must buy the full version to unlock it, and it lacks MeMory's cute theme-color feel |
| Oshikatsu app Pics | Japan 6,331 reviews | Oshi calendar plus diary, doesn't track counts |
| ウマカン | 40 ratings | Also called "推し活グッズ管理アプリ," it launched in 2024 January but never took off |
| StashEye, 推し活ログ, 推しノート | dozens of reviews | one focused on photo recognition, one on calendar plus merch, one on diary plus wishlist |
| phone Notes, Notion, spreadsheets | None | users were already making do with these |
After MeMory launched in July, a bunch of new apps with nearly identical names and positioning appeared on the Japan store: COLLEMO「推し活グッズ管理・コレクション記録」(8-18), もってる帳「推し活グッズ管理とダブり買い防止」(8-25), POPs Log「推し活・グッズ管理」(9-15), plus temochi and 推しイレ. By November, they all had single-digit to low-teens review counts. There's no evidence anyone copied anyone, but this slot in Japan is already getting crowded. MeMory just got the reviews and rankings first, and it's hard for latecomers to outrank it in search results.
Where's the money coming from: nowhere yet
The iOS version is free with no charge, and the Android version has ads. For a tool with 60k downloads and hundreds of new users a day, ad revenue probably only covers the developer's coffee money (est.). The developer is preparing an oshi-katsu media account, @LovaMe_official, and the website is also under the domain lovame-official.com, which suggests they want to funnel users to media or e-commerce (inferred, not verified).
This is the biggest weakness of this business. Merch tracking is a natural fit for paid features: capped free entries, premium themes, multi-device sync, a monthly "oshi spending report." monoca's one-time purchase model shows people will pay for this. But so far, no one has publicly proven that a merch-tracking app built for otaku fans has made money.
If it were you
B. The opportunity is real, and the approach is simple: pick a frequent, specific small pain point within a large community, build only that, name it with the words users actually search for, and make the UI shareable. But the Japan store is already crowded, the original is free, and you need to figure out the monetization question for yourself first.
Who it's for: a solo dev or a team of 1 to 2, with at least one person who's already into fandom merch and knows how badges, standees, photocards and Polaroids are sorted. You'll need Kotlin Multiplatform or Flutter to ship both platforms from one codebase, and an interface that fits the fandom's taste.
Who it's not for: anyone who wants to build another 「推し活グッズ管理」 in the Japan store, since the name and positioning are already taken; anyone who doesn't understand the community and just copies a feature list, since these users are picky about aesthetics and details and their bad reviews come from exactly that; anyone who wants to make money from it quickly.
How to do it: switch to a different community. There are two directions.
- Chinese goods collectors: badges, standees, photocards, colored paper. It's exactly the same stuff as in Japan, with far more people. The China App Store already has 「谷獭社-谷子记账次元收纳」 (listed 2026-08-20, with 11-06 reviews at 67), so someone has noticed, but no one has scaled it yet. Name it directly 「谷子管理」or「吃谷记账」, and add features specific to the domestic community: the term 「谷子」 itself, bookkeeping for group buys and proxy purchases, and logging the cash recovered from each resale (「出谷」).
- Global K-pop photocard community: in the English market, Bias Room (listed 2026-05) has 849 reviews in the US store and is already capturing this segment, but it only handles photocards.
Feature set follows MeMory: photo cutout, count and price tracking, category totals, fan-color themes, no sign-up required. Build monetization in from day one, such as free tracking for 100 items with overflow unlocked through a one-time purchase or monthly subscription. Don't wait until you have users to add it.
How to get users: first, store search, since the app name is the search term. Second, post screenshots and screen recordings like 「my goods cost me this much in total」 on Xiaohongshu and Bilibili. Goods collectors love showing off their spending and their bills. Third, reply to and act on every request in the comments section. That's how MeMory earned its 4.7 score.
How early is early enough: the sooner the better. From MeMory's launch to five or six same-named apps crowding in on the Japan store took just two months. The term 「谷子管理」 in China is still unclaimed, and whoever lists first and collects reviews first will stay ahead.
Signs you've misjudged this: ① 谷獭社 or another domestic goods-tracking app accumulates over a thousand reviews within six months. That means the slot is already taken, and you can only compete by doing what it does poorly. ② After adding paid features, the conversion rate doesn't even reach 1%. That means this community will only use free tools, and the money has to come from elsewhere (trades, secondhand sales, group buys). ③ MeMory's Android installs flatten after November, and the iOS app drops out of the top 200 in Japan's Lifestyle category. That means its growth came from a one-off chart push, not from search terms.

Date 2026-11-06. Channel: Google Play (data card recall). The iOS version of the same product (App Store id 6761535318) is the main subject, so we review them together. Data sources: our googleplay / appstore libraries (agent-im server DuckDB), the App Store review pages, the official website, the official X account, APPLION, AppInsider, TikHub (TikTok). Items marked 「unverified」 are inferences.
One line
A Japanese indie dev (Koumei Watase, listed as kwatta on Google Play) built an app for organizing oshi-katsu merch: photograph and log your cans badges, acrylic stands, nuigurumi and trading cards, with counts, prices and purchase dates, sorted by page or category, and you can switch to a theme colored in your oshi's color. Approved on iOS 2026-06-09, announced its official launch on X 7-24, and the official account bio now reads "60,000 downloads"; the Android version only launched 10-16, and got 4,564 installs in three weeks.
Verdict
It took off mainly because of three things:
- The app name is the search term: the app is literally called 「推し活・グッズ管理」, so Japanese female fandom users searching 「推し活」 or 「グッズ管理」 run straight into it (a recalled card records it ranking #1 on the App Store for 「推し活 グッズ 管理」; I couldn't re-check, and the iTunes search API returned 403). The AppInsider model estimates that in recent 30 days, 38% of downloads came from store search and 47% from store browsing (model estimate, not measured).
- Does one thing, and makes it 「かわいい」: most competitors are 「all-in-one oshi-katsu suites」 (schedules, anniversaries, expense logs, SNS), or general item management (monoca). MeMory solves a single one-sentence need, 「これ持ってたっけ? 何個買ったっけ?」 (Did I already have this? How many did I buy?), plus background removal and fan-color themes, and its screenshots look good enough to share. Reviews include 「今までメモでやってた」 (I used to do it in notes), 「こういうの求めてた」 (I was looking for something like this) and 「友人に勧められ」 (a friend recommended it).
- Fast iteration, responds to reviews: from September to November it shipped 1.6 to 1.10 five versions, and the 9-24 version added English / Traditional Chinese / Korean at the same time. Every update note says 「ご要望の反映」 (incorporating your requests). The X account posts notices like 「カテゴリ管理についてのお知らせ」 (category management notice), which are apology and tutorial posts, and the developer replies to negative App Store reviews one by one. The Android version was pushed for by users on X (the pinned post's wording: 「たくさんのご要望をいただいていた」, many requests had come in).
No hard evidence of paid acquisition or creator campaigns. The launch post on X got only 156 likes, and no viral TikTok video explicitly naming MeMory was found. Growth looks more like 「store search + small-community word of mouth」.

| Notion / Google Sheets / phone memo app | Web / big-tech features | — | — | These are the users' original "workarounds": ugly and inconvenient. Reviews say things like "I used to do this with memos." |
Verdict: this category isn't short of builders. In 2026 years, over twenty "oshi-katsu [X] management" apps have appeared in the Japan store alone. But the slot that tracks merch counts specifically had none above a few hundred reviews before MeMory. The big players were either all-in-one suites (Oshibana) or general tools (monoca). MeMory was the first to grow that slot.

| Store search (ASO) | The app name is "推し活・グッズ管理 - MeMory" ("Oshi-katsu merch management"). The recall card shows that searching "推し活 グッズ 管理" on iOS ranks it first. The AppInsider model estimates search accounts for 38% of traffic and browsing for 47%. | Partly confirmed (the name is confirmed; search ranking and traffic-source shares were not re-checked) |
| X official account @MeMory_app_ | 201 posts; the launch post was 2026-07-24 (156 likes), tagged #オタ活 #グッズ管理 #個数管理 #推し活. It posts update notices, tutorials and apology posts. | Confirmed to exist, small scale |
| Word of mouth / friend recommendations | App Store review: "1 months ago a friend recommended it and I installed it". Use cases are spreading (arcade card machine collections, lost goods, managing books). | Confirmed (anecdotal) |
| Creators / TikTok | TikTok has a discover page called "グッズ管理アプリ Memory", which shows people are searching for it. But the videos on that page don't explicitly name MeMory. A photo post from @1i1llj_ with 10-16 22k views has comments asking "what's the app name?", so whether it's MeMory can't be confirmed. | Unconfirmed |
| Paid ads | The AppInsider model says 15% is paid (based on Google Ads transparency). Our ad library only tracks products on its list, so we can't check this. | Unconfirmed |
| Multi-language expansion | 9-24 adds English, Traditional Chinese and Korean. Taiwan iOS Lifestyle reaches the top 100, and Play Taiwan Lifestyle #32. | Confirmed |
| Both platforms | The iOS bundle is com.watasekoumei.memoryapp.kmp (Kotlin Multiplatform), so the Android version was cheap to build. The 10-12 release already added "data transfer to Android". | Confirmed |
Why it's taking off now
- The demand is already there: TikTok "oshi-katsu goods / goods storage" videos routinely reach millions of views (e.g. @willertravel 1.85M, @rin_oshikatsu100 1.84M). Piling up merch is everyday life in this community. But the conversations are about physical storage; digital tracking has been an empty space.
- The delivery model is light: no sign-up, iCloud sync, completely free, no in-app purchases (the website says "価格 無料" / free). The Play version is labelled as containing ads.
- There was no platform event behind the timing; it wasn't riding a wave.
Visibility
Few people know about it yet. Revenue isn't public (there's barely any to speak of: no iOS IAP, and Play relies on ads). No media coverage found, only aggregator pages like Newmade, APPLION and AppInsider, some automated or semi-automated. The X account is small, and our x-radar corpus has no related tweets. No discussion seen in English or Chinese circles.
Copycats
There's no clear evidence anyone is copying it. But after MeMory's 7-24 launch, a run of new Japan App Store apps with nearly identical names and positioning appeared: Motteru Cho ("oshi-katsu merch management and duplicate-purchase prevention", 8-25), COLLEMO ("oshi-katsu merch management / collection log", 8-18), POPs Log ("oshi-katsu / merch management", 9-15), Oshi Ire (6-29), temochi (7-20), Collemy (4-16). Each has only single to low-double-digit ratings so far. Others are already crowding into this gap; nobody has pulled ahead yet.
Differentiation
- Precise scope: it only tracks "what I have, how many, how much I spent". Each category shows total spend and total count, which speaks directly to two fan mindsets: the drive to collect and the question of how much has gone into oshi-katsu.
- Visuals: background removal for cutouts, oshi-colour themes, font swaps, and per-page settings. The merch list itself becomes something you can show off as a wall. General tools like monoca offer no such emotional payoff.
- Is it the reason it broke out?: It's one major factor, but it should be read together with "the name catching search terms". Many competitors have similar features but don't claim the "oshi-katsu merch management" phrase head-on in their names, or bury merch management inside all-in-one suites. Differentiation is the part that keeps users, earns good reviews and gets friends to recommend it (4.7 points). ASO is the part that gets users to find it.
Takeaways
- Pick one high-frequency, specific pain point within a big community (oshi-katsu): repeat purchases, forgetting how many you own. Build only that, and name the app with the words users actually search for.
- Add an emotional "cute / shareable" layer to utility apps (oshi-colour themes, cutouts). In the female-skewing market this separates you more than features do.
- Use Kotlin Multiplatform to run one codebase on both platforms. When users on X ask for Android, you get a second launch wave for free.
- Cheap multi-language expansion: Taiwan, Hong Kong and Korea have the same goods and photocard culture. The same logic transfers to China's "goods" circles (badges, standees, photocards) and the K-pop photocard community.
Still unclear
- 10-16/17 iOS hit Japan Lifestyle #11 and overall #134. The trigger (an X post spreading, a creator video, or store featuring) wasn't found.
- Whether it ranks first for its App Store keyword wasn't re-verified (iTunes API 403).
- Whether it runs ads: AppInsider's 15% is a model estimate.
- Monetization: no IAP on iOS; Play is labelled as containing ads. The developer is preparing an oshi-katsu media brand, @LovaMe_official, and may aim to convert traffic into media or e-commerce. Unverified.
- 60,000DL is self-reported; the recall card says "8/30 announced 10k." I only saw in the sotwe summary that the bio once read "10,000DL breakthrough"; I have not verified the specific date.
