Short-drama app with 170k installs in two days: its rival isn't ReelShort, it's its own six siblings

What it is A vertical short-drama app on Android. Watch ads to watch full episodes for free, no coin purchases required.

Why it took off The same Facebook page ran Spanish-language short-drama ads for 10-30, pushing it and its sibling apps up the entertainment free charts in Brazil, Mexico and Spain. Users were people blocked by the ReelShort and DramaBox paywalls looking for a free way to finish a show.

CHow you could follow it Don't copy the short-drama play. Take the playbook ("once one brand works, clone the .pro/.max apps, run paid acquisition from one page, split spend by language, and let ad revenue pay back") and apply it to a category where you have legitimate content or tools.

C grade: the playbook is clear and worth studying, but following it requires content sourcing, paid acquisition budget and multiple accounts. Content sourcing is legally questionable, and free short dramas are already crowded with big players like PineDrama, FreeReels and Melolo plus many anonymous copycat apps, so a small team won't profit. Drama World Max is an Android app where you "watch full short dramas for free by watching ads." In late October it grew from 12k to 185k installs in two days. It didn't take off because the product is good. Behind it is a group of anonymous operators who used 7 developer accounts, 16 apps and one Facebook page to concentrate paid acquisition, taking several spots at once on the Latin American app charts. This piece lays out how the playbook works, where the money comes from, what you can learn from it, and why I don't recommend copying it.

One Spanish ad and a steep line

In 2026 Oct 30, a Facebook Page called PassionPro-Short started running a batch of Spanish-language vertical short-drama videos, with copy roughly like "✨ Una historia corta llena de sorpresas. Mírala ahora." (a short story full of twists, watch it now), a "Ver más" button, and tapping it went straight to Google Play. Nov 2 another batch went up.

These two days line up with two steps in Drama World Max's install count. Google Play installs: 10-29 then 12,220,10-31 then 72,735,11-02 then 185,349,11-06 then 230,965. It launched in September 16, after six weeks of almost no movement (estimated at around 2,800 by 10-24). This is an app ignited by paid acquisition: flip the switch and the line goes up.

Right now it only places on the charts in Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking markets: 11-06 Brazil and Spain entertainment free chart #34, Mexico #40, Argentina #49. Around 10-29 it flashed briefly on the entertainment charts in the US, UK, Canada and Australia, then dropped off. It is not on the Top Grossing chart.

What it sells: no coins, just watch ads

The store listing copy is plain: "More Stories. Easier to Discover." Genres listed include romance, suspense, werewolves, fantasy, revenge and rags-to-riches, with "watch on your commute, on breaks, before bed." Google Play labels it "Contains ads," and in-app purchases run $7.99–$29.99 each.

The real hook is elsewhere. ReelShort and DramaBox, the leading short-drama apps, each have over 300M installs on Google Play, and their model is that the first few episodes are free, after which coins unlock the rest. Users trained by heavy ad spend hit the paywall at episode 10, then go looking for an app where they can finish for free. An ad from the same operators on another page spells it out: "Stop Paying! Watch Full Drama Free. ✅ 100% Free Episodes ✅ No Subscription."

Max has no reviews yet, so look at Drama World Pro (Philippines region, 11-02 to 11-05), whose positive reviews say:

"you can watch the whole series just watching a little ads on it unlike other apps that have a limit in watching movie" "excellent can watch not cut"

Almost all the negative reviews are about ads:

"the ads is longer than ep" "too many ads every episode 2 ads playing before the clip" "Every time I tried to exit the ad it would bring me straight to Google play to download the app being advertised."

So the math on this business: pay to acquire a user, get them to watch a few more episodes for free, and collect interstitial and rewarded video ad revenue. Keep spending while ad revenue exceeds acquisition cost. In-app purchases are a side bonus; the app isn't on the Top Grossing chart, so IAP revenue is likely small (inference).

Who's behind it: one page, seven shell brands, sixteen apps

Drama World Max's developer is called Skylark Scan, a name that sounds like a scanning tool, with a personal Gmail as contact. It has three apps: Drama World (7-30 launch, 3.93M installs), Drama World Pro and Drama World Max (both launched on 9-16, with 730k and 230k installs).

Follow PassionPro-Short's ads down the funnel and it's not just these three apps. 11-06 This page is running 442 ads (11-03 of them are 258), with over 20k in total historically, landing on the apps below (Google Play installs, 11-06):

Combined, roughly 95M installs. The developer names are a jumble of unrelated words (supplements, conservative, scan, new step), and the emails are random personal names or gibberish Gmail addresses. The websites use the same template: Drama World Max's site title reads "Just watch it, it's DramaWorld Max," Passion Drama's reads "Just watch it, it's short drama," and Max's footer support email is literally "support@DramaWorld Max.com," with the name swapped in and the spaces left in. I couldn't determine which company is behind it; judging from package names, templates and account style, it looks like a Chinese going-global team (inference, low confidence).

The playbook: prove one brand, then copy it three times over

Broken down, the operation has three steps:

  1. Once one brand works, immediately clone the .pro / .max / .lite apps. After Drama World reached several million installs, Pro and Max launched the same day. The apps are nearly identical: same description, same IAP prices, same website template, differing only in package name and target country. Two advantages: several spots on one category chart at once, and if one app gets pulled, the other two are still live.
  2. One Facebook page advertises for all the shell apps. Creatives are split by language: English ("Super intense, never-ending dramatic plots…"), Spanish ("Trama emocionante sin parar🔥 Haz clic para ver todos los episodios ahora"), and one set each in Portuguese and Indonesian. Creatives are shared, so there's no need to run a separate page per app; the downside is that if the page gets into trouble, the whole matrix goes down together.
  3. Dominating the charts. 11-06 In Brazil's Entertainment Top Free top 40, this group holds 7 spots (Halo Reels #6, Drama World Pro #15, DramaOL #23, Drama World #25, ShortFly Max #31, Halo Reels Pro #32, Drama World Max #34), and in Mexico's top 40 it holds 9. Search "drama" in the store and you'll bump into one of them within a few swipes.

Another thing that doesn't look natural: Max's star distribution is 1-star 60, 2-star 0, 3-star 0, 4-star 713, 5-star 3,189,10-29, and at 12k installs it already had 1,306 ratings (about 10%, where normal is roughly 1–2%). Early on it looks like positive ratings were prompted, unverified. Since the ignition, it has added about 300 ratings a day, and the ratio has returned to normal.

Searching it on TikTok and X turns up nothing. No content, no word of mouth, no media coverage. Every user was bought.

"Watch it all for free" is a pitch several big players have been running for a while, with a far larger and better-stocked library. Drama World Max's position here: using paid acquisition to pick up users blocked by paywalls in the long-tail chart spots.

If it were you

C There's a complete distribution playbook to learn here, but copying it isn't worth it. This is a business of content sourcing, ad budget, and account survival, and the big players have already made "free short dramas" their main battlefield.

Who it fits: teams already doing overseas paid acquisition, with short-drama sources (or access to licensed, translated series), several developer accounts, and ad-monetization experience. For them, this is a ready-made homework assignment.

Who it doesn't fit: indie devs who've never run ads; anyone without legitimate content sources (where anonymous packs get their material is unclear, and takedowns, bans, and copyright complaints can come at any time); anyone hoping product quality will win. In this category's user reviews, the praise and the complaints are both about ads. Nobody cares about the product.

How to do it (if you still want to try): don't build a short-drama app. Move this playbook to a category where you have legitimate content or tools. Once one pack works, clone two or three near-identical versions and target them by language. Run all paid campaigns from one landing page, with creatives batched by language. In the first month, watch whether per-user ad revenue can cover install cost. If it can't, stop.

How to acquire users: there's only one route, Meta paid acquisition (Facebook, Instagram, Audience Network), with vertical story clips as creatives and buttons that jump straight to the store. Don't count on TikTok organic traffic or store search. It's zero for them too.

Window: there isn't a clear one. This playbook has been used by a pile of anonymous packs for over a year. It won't get looser, only more crowded. Free products from big players like PineDrama keep growing in Latin America, and conversion in the long-tail chart spots will keep getting worse.

Signs you're reading this wrong: ① PassionPro-Short's active ads keep climbing and Drama World Max enters a Brazilian or Mexican grossing chart in December, which would mean ad-plus-IAP recovers better than assumed and its monetization is worth studying closely; ② a small team with a licensed library runs the same "free + ads" model independently in a language market (say Indonesian or Vietnamese) and succeeds, which would mean the model doesn't require a pack matrix and the opportunity is on the content side.

Why Drama World Max (com.watcher.drama.world.max) was able to break through

Research date 2026-11-06. Data sources: our googleplay library (app / app_day / app_day_ext / chart_rank / review), metaads library (advertiser / ad / app_link), and the web (Jina / Exa search). Anything unconfirmed is marked "unverified."

Bottom line

Drama World Max isn't an independent product that broke through on its own. It's a newly ignited pack in an anonymous overseas "free short drama (ad-monetized)" app matrix. The same group uses at least 7 different developer accounts and 16 package names (base / Pro / Max / Lite) to spread across Google Play, with paid acquisition concentrated through one Facebook page, PassionPro-Short (currently running 442 ads, 20,301 historically). Max launched in Sep 16, Spanish creatives started running around Oct 30, and within two days installs went from 12k to 185k. It broke through on paid acquisition plus pack-matrix chart-stacking. The product pitch is "watch the full drama free by watching ads," positioned against ReelShort and DramaBox's coin paywalls.

1. Data profile

  • The developer is Skylark Scan (the name sounds like a scanning tool and has nothing to do with short dramas; likely a bought or renamed account). Contact email [email protected] (personal Gmail), website dramafuture.com. The library holds 3 apps totaling 4.89M installs (googleplay.developer, 11-06): | App | Launched | Installs (11-06) | New in 7 days | Ratings | |---|---|---|---|---| | Drama World | 2026-07-30 | 3,928,727 | 547,017 | 71,309 | | Drama World Pro | 2026-09-16 | 732,452 | 691,121 | 16,880 | | Drama World Max | 2026-09-16 | 230,965 | 218,745 | 3,979 |
  • Max's install curve (AppstoreSpy estimates plus our own observations, app_day_ext / app_day): 10-24 about 2,842,10-26, about 12,213, then barely moved until 10-29 (12,220). 10-31 rose to 72,735,11-02, then to 185,349, 11-03 205,956,11-06 230,965. So after 6 weeks on the store with almost no traffic, it was suddenly ignited at the end of October.
  • Charts (chart_rank): it only ranked in Latin America and Spain. 11-06 Brazil and Spain's Entertainment Top Free: #34, Mexico #40, Argentina #49; Brazil's overall chart #174, Mexico #155. At 10-29 it also made the Entertainment charts in the US (84), Australia, Canada, and the UK, but those dropped off later. It has no Top Grossing ranking.
  • Monetization: Google Play lists it as "contains ads", with IAP at $7.99–$29.99 per item (app_snap), identical to the other apps in the same matrix.
  • Ratings: 4.75; star distribution [1★60, 2★0, 3★0, 4★713, 5★3189] (11-06). 2-star and 3-star counts are 0, and on 10-29 it had 12,220 ratings at 1,306 installs (about 10.7%, where normal in this category is 1–2%). This looks like prompted positive ratings or rating inflation early on (unverified). Sibling apps DramaOL and AnyShort have exactly equal 1-star and 2-star counts (449/449, 440/440), and their distributions also look unnatural.

2. It belongs to a matrix (key finding)

In the Meta Ad Library, the PassionPro-Short page (page_id 1156915574179436, about 4,700 likes, category "Media/news company"; 11-03 running 258 ads now, rising from 11-06 to 442, with 20,301 ads historically) sends its ads to these packs (metaads.app_link):

Drama World / Pro / MaxSkylark Scancom.watcher.drama.world(.pro/.max)3.93M / 730K / 230K

Roughly 95M installs combined. Corroboration:

  • The developer names are unrelated words (supplements, conservative, scan, new step), and the emails are random personal names or gibberish Gmail addresses (geraldsizemore3379@, amandaveronica338@, kxqbtg@, mlagfknzop@), a classic "multiple accounts to spread ban risk" setup.
  • The websites share one template: dramafuture.com/index-max.html is titled "DramaWorld Max - Just watch it, it's DramaWorld Max", and passion-drama.com is titled "Passion Drama - Just watch it, it's short drama". Search snippets for both sites use the same line: "the next generation of HD streaming platform… Each episode is 1 minute in length". Max's footer support email reads "support@DramaWorld Max.com", so the template substitution wasn't finished cleanly.
  • Package names all follow "base + .pro + .max/.lite": once one brand works, clone two or three packs to hold several chart spots at once, with backups in case one is taken down.
  • Of the top 40 in 11-06 Brazil's Entertainment Top Free, this matrix holds 7 spots: Halo Reels 6, Drama World Pro 15, DramaOL 23, Drama World 25, ShortFly Max 31, Halo Reels Pro 32, Drama World Max 34 (chart_rank). In Mexico's top 40 it holds 9 as well.

3. Growth tactics

  1. Meta ad spend (confirmed). PassionPro-Short's ads are all vertical short-drama videos, the CTA is WATCH_MORE, and it jumps straight to the Play Store. Placements cover Facebook, Instagram, Audience Network, Messenger and Threads. The copy varies by language: English "Super intense, never-ending dramatic plots…", Spanish "Trama emocionante sin parar🔥 Haz clic para ver todos los episodios ahora", Portuguese "Enredos extremadamente intensos…", Indonesian "Alur cerita seru tanpa henti". Of the 4 ads that land on com.watcher.drama.world, the Spanish creatives are the ones running. 2026-10-30 and 11-02 went live with "✨ Una historia corta llena de sorpresas. Mírala ahora." That lines up with Max's two jumps in 10-31 and 11-02, and with Max only charting in Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking markets. Ads that point straight to the .max package didn't show up in our first-screen samples (we only captured the first screen, so that doesn't mean they don't exist). On Facebook, another page for Halo Reels Pro (61593858275569) has video copy reading "Stop Paying! Watch Full Drama Free. ✅ 100% Free Episodes ✅ No Subscription" (from a Jina search result).
  2. Sock-puppet packages dominating charts and store search (high confidence). The same brand 3 packages are running ads at once, all with Drama / Reels / Short in the name. In Brazil, Mexico and the Philippines they take several slots on the entertainment free chart, and searches for "drama" return multiple hits.
  3. Incentivized reviews / rating manipulation (suspected, unverified). See the star distribution above and the 10% rating rate in the early days after launch.
  4. Reddit word of mouth (small scale, indirect). The ai-drama.ai article by 2026-10-20 checked a Reddit list of 32 "free short-drama apps". It includes BonusTV, BonusTV Lite, Passion Drama and Passion Drama Pro (the same matrix), but not Drama World. The author questioned the legitimacy of the content sourcing for these anonymous developers.
  5. TikTok (TikHub searches for "drama world max" and "dramaworld app" both return 0 results), X (x-radar: 30 posts in the last 0 days), the TikTok European ad library and the Google ad library: nothing found.

4. Why users come and stay

  • Why now: demand for vertical short dramas in Latin America and Southeast Asia has already been built up by ReelShort and DramaBox, which spent hundreds of millions of dollars on paid acquisition (googleplay library: ReelShort 307M installs, DramaBox 307M). Users who watch the first few episodes from those ads hit the coin paywall and naturally search for "watch for free to the end".
  • Why people stay: recent reviews for Drama World Pro (Philippines, review table, 11-01–11-05) are positive about "you can watch the whole series just watching a little ads on it unlike other apps that have a limit in watching movie" and "excellent can watch not cut". The negative reviews are almost all about the ads: "the ads is longer than ep", "every episode 2 ads playing before the clip", "Every time I tried to exit the ad it would bring me straight to Google play". So retention comes from "you can finish it without paying", and the cost is heavy ads. Max itself has no review samples in the library.
  • Where the money comes from: mainly ads (interstitial and rewarded video; reviews mention a lot of download ads for apps like TikTok), with in-app purchases ($7.99–$29.99) as a secondary source. It has no Top Grossing ranking, so in-app revenue is probably small.

6. Differentiation

  • For users: "watch the whole thing free with ads, no coins needed". Compared with the ReelShort / DramaBox paywall, this is a real difference, and reviews show users staying because of it. But this difference isn't unique to it: FreeReels, PineDrama and Melolo already do it, with bigger libraries and much larger scale.
  • For Drama World Max itself: it's barely distinguishable from its sibling packages (same listing copy, same in-app purchase prices, same template website). The only differences are the package name and ad targeting regions.
  • So the reason it's working isn't product differentiation. It's the distribution playbook: a matrix of accounts + concentrated paid acquisition through one Facebook page + one brand with several packages taking chart slots + ad monetization paying back the spend. The "free" part of the product only keeps the bought users watching ad breaks long enough for the ad spend to pay off.

7. How many people know about it

  • No public revenue figures, no media coverage, and nothing on X or TikTok. There are only auto-generated pages on AppBrain, Uptodown, Similarweb and AppGazers. The sibling BonusTV and Passion Drama appear in Reddit free-app lists and in the ai-drama.ai article.
  • Verdict: it's being talked about in small circles (peers running overseas short-drama ads recognize this playbook at a glance, and short-drama forums occasionally mention sibling packages). Drama World Max itself is still barely known.

8. What to borrow

  • Once one brand works, clone the .pro / .max packages right away, swap in new-language creatives and target new regions. This both takes up more chart slots and hedges against takedowns. As long as the paid acquisition for each package pays back, keep adding more.
  • The pitch targets the most annoying part of the top players' model (the paywall), monetizes through ads, and competes for the same users.
  • Using one Facebook page to run ads for multiple developer accounts: creatives are reused, and there's no need to set up and warm up a separate page for each package (the trade-off is association risk).

9. Uncertain

  • Legitimacy of content sourcing: anonymous developers, no original productions, and where the content comes from is unverified (the ai-drama.ai author also said they couldn't trace it).
  • Actual revenue, ad eCPM and paid-acquisition ROI are unknown; there's no grossing rank.
  • Whether ratings were manipulated can only be inferred from unnatural distributions; not verified.
  • How many ads run directly to the .max package is unknown (we only saw first-screen Meta samples, and only a few dozen ads per PassionPro-Short pull).
  • We haven't identified who is behind the matrix (possibly a Chinese overseas team; this is a guess based on package names, the template website and the style of the Gmail accounts).
