> The pay-per-episode short-drama model was already proven in Southeast Asia, where the Top Grossing charts have low bars. The team relaunched StarReelTV, the previous brand it couldn't keep buying traffic for, under a new skin and concentrated a burst of spending, and 150k installs pushed it into Top Grossing.

# 150k installs and it charted in Indonesia's Top Grossing: Glimora is the second face of a short-drama app

**What it is** A vertical short-drama app. The first few episodes are free, then you unlock the rest with coins or a weekly/monthly pass. It mainly sells to users in Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, and India.

**Why it took off** The pay-per-episode model was already proven in Southeast Asia, where the grossing charts are easier to crack. The team swapped the failing brand StarReelTV for a new shell, relaunched it, and bought a concentrated wave of users. 150k installs was enough to push it into the grossing charts.

**D** **How you could ride it** Don't build another short-drama app. If you want a piece of this track, sell tools to the short-drama teams that keep rotating shells: multilingual subtitles and dubbing, batch editing of ad creatives, and landing-page templates with off-store payments.

Grade D: this is a business of content libraries, ad budgets, and rotating shells. Small teams can't get the content or the budget. The track is already crowded with a dozen rivals at hundreds of millions of installs, and Glimora itself is a follower stuck in the bottom tier. Few people know about it yet

Data (updated daily) · first launch 2026-07-20 · 11-07 installs 148,045

Android · Total installs worldwide

Data 2026-10-29 → 2026-11-07 (10 days, 10 observations). Google's detail page only refreshes install counts every other day, so a flat day doesn't mean nobody installed.

A short-drama app launched in July that almost nobody discussed. In one week in October, its installs more than doubled, and it charted in the entertainment grossing rankings of six countries at once: Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, India, and Malaysia. It isn't a new product. The same team took a previous app, moved it under a Hong Kong company, renamed it, relaunched it, and pushed it up with ads. Below: what it is, where the money comes from, where the users come from, and why this is something most indie developers should study rather than copy.

### An Indonesian user's 40k rupiah

On Nov 4, an Indonesian user left Glimora a one-star review on Google Play: "Way too expensive... I tried paying nearly 40k rupiah (about $2.4), thought it would at least get me through one show, and it ran out after 3 episodes. Crazy." Two days ago, another gave three stars: "Good story, shame it's paid. Only 50 coins a day. Wish it were free like PineDrama and Melolo."

These two reviews are almost the entire business model of Glimora: vertical short dramas, the first few episodes free, the rest unlocked episode by episode with coins or a membership. The iOS store page is more direct: "Subscribe to the weekly or monthly pass to unlock all paid episodes." On Play, the individual in-app purchases range from Rp5,000 to Rp5,390,000 (about $0.3 to $325). The shows follow the short-drama industry's standard three: revenge, power struggles, and fantasy romance.

### What happened that week

Cumulative global installs on Google Play (11-06):

| Date | Total installs |
|---|---|
| 10-29 | 61,112 |
| 11-01 | 83,674 |
| 11-03 | 146,026 |
| 11-06 | 148,045 |

Up 86,933 in 7 days, with most of the gain concentrated in one step, from 11-01 to 11-03. In the same window it climbed the Play entertainment grossing charts in several countries at once: Indonesia went from #29 to #17, the Philippines from #98 to #31, India from #82 to #37, and Malaysia from #74 to #41. Its best overall app-grossing rank in Indonesia was #55. The iOS version launched on Aug 23, and its best entertainment grossing ranks were #32 in Vietnam, #37 in the Philippines, and #40 in Thailand.

After Nov 5, the rankings in every country started sliding back. 11-06 Indonesia dropped to #24, and Malaysia to #55.

### Who it really is

Glimora's package name is `com.watchstarreel.glimora`. Swap the prefix and you get `com.watchstarreel.starreeltv`, another short-drama app, StarReelTV, which launched in February 2026. Both use the same support email, support@watchstarreel.com, the same privacy policy template with only the product name changed, and the same website setup.

Now look at StarReelTV's current state: on Play it has 764k cumulative installs, and from 10-29 to 11-06 its rating count rose by only 734. It has 543 ratings with an average of 2.4, and 319 of them are one-star. It can no longer buy installs effectively. Glimora launched in July and started scaling in late October, which fits neatly as its successor.

### Where the users come from: almost all bought

This is inference, but the evidence all points the same way:

- **No organic buzz.** Searching "glimora" on TikTok returns the Pokémon "Glimmora" and a footballer named Gil Mora, with no posts about this app. X had almost no discussion in nearly 30 days, and no media outlet has covered it.

- **Lots of installs, very few reviews.** 148k installs and only 39 ratings on Play (11-06). Roughly one person in 3,800 installs leaves a rating. StarReelTV's ratio is one in 1,400.

- **Weak organic store traffic.** It ranks far down the Top Free charts: Entertainment Top Free in Indonesia is ranked #11-06 at 161, #136 in Taiwan and #177 in Hong Kong.

- **The paid acquisition shows up on its own pages.** The privacy policy says it integrates the Facebook SDK for "ad attribution," and payments run through Stripe. Its subdomain has a `/lp/` landing page path that returns "parameter error" when opened without tracking parameters.

- **The growth looks like a concentrated ad push.** Installs jumped by 60k+ in a single stretch. Its grossing rank rose together in six or seven countries over the same two or three days, then fell together.

Searching the public ad libraries of Meta, Google and TikTok by its company name, product name or domain turns up no advertiser. Chinese short-drama going-global teams often run ads through agency accounts, so this is not surprising, but it also means we cannot see the creatives or how much was spent.

### What users say

Of its 39 ratings, 13 are one-star, 5 three-star and 19 five-star (Play, 11-06). The distribution is polarized. The few written reviews are mostly about money:

- "Spent nearly 40k rupiah and watched only 3 episodes." (Indonesia, 11-04, one-star)

- "I paid with coins and the show wouldn't open. This is a scam." (Indonesia, 10-29, one-star)

- "Nothing is actually free, it's all locked." (Thailand, 10-29, one-star)

- "The story is nothing new, and the weekly price is way too high. Not worth the money." (English, 10-26, one-star, 12 people found it helpful)

- "Fun, I couldn't stop watching, but I spent a lot." (Thailand, 10-30, five-star)

That last one says it best: even the five-star reviewer remembers "I spent a lot." This business earns its revenue from exactly that kind of user.

### Who it's competing with

Short-drama apps in Southeast Asia are already a red ocean. 11-06 Nearly half of the top 40 Entertainment Top Grossing apps on Play in Indonesia are short-drama apps:

| Product | Play cumulative installs (11-06) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| ReelShort | 307M | First tier, #7 in Indonesia Entertainment Top Grossing |
| DramaBox | 307M | First tier, also runs a Lite version |
| NetShort | 162M | #4 in Indonesia |
| DramaWave / HotDrama | 152M / 1.48M | Same company runs two brands, #2 / #21 in Indonesia |
| Melolo | 147M | ByteDance family, free to watch with ads, #3 in Indonesia |
| VibeShort, StoryReel, BlinkDrama | 10M – 19M | Both launched in 2026, each gaining about 7M in 1.2 days |
| Glimora | 148k | 7k gained in 87 days |

Glimora is the smallest of the group in this table. Among newcomers this year, VibeShort's weekly gains are more than ten times Glimora's. Free short-drama clips also circulate everywhere on YouTube Shorts and TikTok, so users don't need to install a dedicated app. The review line "I wish it were free like Melolo" captures this pressure.

### Why it can climb the chart

1. **The model is ready-made.** Coin unlocks, weekly and monthly passes, and revenge and romance themes are a formula ReelShort and DramaBox have already proven in Southeast Asia. Every selling point on Glimora's website (huge library, daily updates, multilingual subtitles, offline downloads, smart recommendations) is industry standard, with nothing distinctive of its own.

2. **The bar for Southeast Asian grossing charts is low.** Under 150k installs is enough to reach the top 20 in Indonesia's Entertainment Top Grossing, which shows that a modest number of paying users in these markets can push an app up the rankings. Rank is relative, and it cannot be converted into an actual revenue figure.

3. **Paid acquisition.** See the previous section.

4. **Brand rotation to extend the run.** When one brand's ads wear out and its rating drops below 2, the operator switches to a newly registered Hong Kong company, a new name and a new package name, and relaunches the same backend and library. The ad accounts and creatives are fresh, and the risk is split up. This is common in Chinese short-drama going global: DramaWave and HotDrama are one company, and DramaBox also has a Lite version.

### Where it falls short

Frankly, there are few gaps a small team could slip into:

- **You can't watch without paying.** Users in Indonesia and Thailand compare it with free-watch apps like Melolo and PineDrama. Free with ads is another route, but ByteDance already holds that ground.

- **The paid experience is rough.** Complaints like "paid with coins but it won't open" and "can't find where to cancel" are things any serious product could avoid. But in a model built on paid acquisition and rotating brands, retention and reputation were never the priority.

- **It only does Southeast Asia and India.** Other languages and markets are already covered by heavyweights like ReelShort and DramaBox, so the gap isn't there either.

### If it were you

**In one sentence:** don't copy it. This is a business of "library + ad budget + several brands rotated through paid campaigns." The entry ticket is content and money, not code. Glimora is itself a follower in this race, and it sits in the last tier.

**Who it fits:** teams that already hold short-drama rights or can shoot their own, have a budget willing to burn on Meta and TikTok, and have experience with going-global paid acquisition. For them, two things are worth learning: pick markets like Indonesia, the Philippines and Thailand where paying barriers are low, and use a modest number of paying users to earn grossing-chart exposure; and run one backend with several brands, rotating them through campaigns and switching to the next when one wears out.

**Who it doesn't fit:** solo or two-person indie devs with no content source and no ad experience. Without content, the best app is an empty shell. With content but no budget, nobody will see you on charts where ReelShort and its peers have 300M installs.

**If you do want to build, how:** don't make yet another short-drama app. A more realistic play is to sell shovels: build things these short-drama teams keep needing and would rather not make themselves, such as multilingual subtitles and dubbing, batch editing for ad creatives, and a template package for web landing pages plus off-store payments. Glimora shows that these teams have to rebuild all of this every time they switch brands.

**How to find customers:** finding clients is easier than finding users. These teams all list marketing@ business emails on Play. Take the short-drama apps in the top 100 of Indonesia's Entertainment Top Grossing, list them one by one, and reach out via the developer emails. Start by making a case study with one brand from one team.

**How urgent is it:** there's no hard deadline. Short-drama teams keep rotating brands. Glimora's paid push has been fading since Nov 5, and the next brand that launches is the next client.

**What would show this read is wrong:** ① Glimora keeps its installs and grossing ranks steady or even climbs after it stops concentrated paid pushes, which would mean it has retention and word of mouth of its own and isn't just buying installs; ② a small Southeast Asian short-drama app with no big-company backing and no big budget reaches the top 50 of Entertainment Top Grossing through organic TikTok content; ③ the top players broadly shift to "free with ads" and coin-based payments stop collecting money in Southeast Asia, in which case both following Glimora and selling tools to it would need to be recalculated.

Where users come from

- Inference **Paid acquisition (Meta and similar, most likely run through agencies + web landing pages)** : the privacy policy says the Facebook SDK is used for ad attribution; video.glimora.net/lp/ is a landing page that expects tracking parameters; 148k installs with 0 ratings; 10-31 to 11-03 grossing ranks climbed together across seven countries. Our Google, Meta and TikTok ad library searches did not match any advertiser to it.

- **Confirmed** **brand-swap matrix** : same package prefix as StarReelTV (com.watchstarreel), same email domain watchstarreel.com, same privacy-policy template; both Hong Kong entities were registered on 2026-01-14

- Inferred **TikTok / X content and creators** : TikHub and x-radar searches for "glimora" turned up nothing related to this app

### Bottom line

### 1. Data (from our database)

**Google Play (googleplay library, 2026-10-29 to 11-06)**

- Cumulative global installs: 10-29 was 61,112 → 11-01 was 83,674 → 11-03 was 146,026 → 11-06 was 148,045; over 7 days it grew 86,933 (about +142%). Google's install counts move in steps every few days, not daily.

- Ratings: **148k installs, ratings count is 0 (NULL)** , and the database captured no reviews at all. StarReelTV from the same team had 760k installs with only 543 ratings and an average of 3.2. Huge installs with almost nobody rating them fits passive users brought in by paid ads (inferred, not verified).

- Version: 1.0.17 → 1.0.18 (11-03); `ad_supported = true`; in-app purchase range $0.29 – $299.99.

- Entertainment Top Grossing chart trend (store: rank, 10-29 → 11-06):
    - Indonesia 29 → 17 (best 11-05) → 24
    - Philippines 98 → 31 → 33
    - India 82 → 37 → 48
    - Malaysia 74 → 41 → 55
    - Thailand 28 → 27 → 36
    - Vietnam 40 → 35 → 40
    - Turkey 153 → 143 (charted from 11-01)
    - Overall Top Grossing chart: best rank #55 in Indonesia, #62 in Thailand, #76 in the Philippines.
    - From 10-31 to 11-03, rankings in every store climbed together, in the same window as the install step-up, like a concentrated ad push. After 11-05, every store started sliding back.

- The free chart only places it in the mid-to-lower range: #40 in Indonesia's Entertainment Top Free, #136 in Taiwan, #164 in Hong Kong.

**App Store (appstore database)** : the iOS version 2026-08-23 is live; Entertainment Top Grossing peaks at #32 in Vietnam, #37 in the Philippines, #40 in Thailand, #42 in Indonesia, #46 in Malaysia, #59 in India; ratings count is almost 0 (2 in Thailand, 1 in Malaysia). iOS and Play charted in the same Southeast Asian countries at the same time, which suggests both ends were bought together.

### 2. Who it is: a short-drama disguise matrix

- **Same package prefix** : `com.watchstarreel.glimora` and `com.watchstarreel.starreeltv` (StarReelTV).

- **Same email** : Glimora's Play developer email is marketing@watchstarreel.com, and the support email listed on the glimora.net site is support@watchstarreel.com, the same as StarReelTV's support email (googleplay database `app` table; [www.glimora.net/](https://www.glimora.net/)).

- **Same privacy-policy template** , only the product name swapped (compare https://video.glimora.net/lp/privacypolicy.html with [starreel.tv/privacypolicy.html](https://starreel.tv/privacypolicy.html)). It states the app integrates the Facebook SDK, Google Analytics and Stripe, used for "ad attribution" and payments.

- The traditional-Chinese company names and the Chinese loading message on the starreel.tv homepage ("正在进入~请稍等") both point to a Chinese team going global (inferred). I did not find which parent company stands behind them.

- **Status of the previous brand** : StarReelTV 2026-02-06 is live on Play, cumulative 764,195 installs, grew only 734 from 10-29 to 11-06, and paid acquisition has largely stopped; the iOS version is still charting at #80–100 in the Malaysia / Thailand / Vietnam Top Grossing charts (googleplay and appstore databases). Glimora launched in July and started scaling in late October, which lines up with it taking over.

### 3. Where users came from (growth tactics)

| Channel | Evidence | Confirmed? |
|---|---|---|
| Paid acquisition (Meta / ad networks, most likely via agencies or web landing pages) | The privacy policy says ad attribution runs on the Facebook SDK. The business subdomain video.glimora.net has a `/lp/` (landing page) path: visit it with no parameters and it returns "parameter error", so it's a landing page meant to be reached with paid-campaign parameters. 148k installs but a 0 rating. Top Grossing charts in several countries spiked together in the same window. Our googleads library 11-02 checked the legal entity name, product name, and domain: no advertiser found (no_ads). metaads returns nothing. The TikTok ad library (EU-only) doesn't match. Chinese short-drama apps going global are often paid for through agency accounts such as BlueVision or Sinointeractive, and our library can't trace a specific client from an agency account. | Inferred, fairly strong (no visible creative is available) |
| Brand swap / matrix | Same package prefix, same email, same privacy-policy template, two Hong Kong companies registered on the same day; Glimora took over after StarReelTV wound down | Confirmed |
| Content and creators (TikTok / X / Reddit) | A TikHub search for "glimora" only returns Pokémon's "Glimmora" and the player Gil Mora, nothing about this app; x-radar: 0 posts in the last 30 days | Confirmed: no organic content spread |
| Store search / editorial features | Play has a "Trend alert: short-form dramas" editorial feature (which apps it includes is unverified); Glimora's free-chart rank is low, which doesn't look like organic store traffic | Not verified |
| Media coverage / public revenue | Searches in both Chinese and English found no media coverage, no founder posts about revenue, and no TrustMRR listing | Confirmed: none |

### 4. Competitors

The Southeast Asian short-drama category is a red ocean. Nearly 20 of the top 40 spots on Indonesia's Play Entertainment Top Grossing chart (11-06) are short-drama apps (googleplay database chart_rank):

| Product | Launched | Scale (Play cumulative installs, 11-06) | How it differs from Glimora |
|---|---|---|---|
| ReelShort (NewLeaf / Maple Interactive) | 2022-08 | 307M, +5.5M in 7 days | Top tier, self-produced English dramas, live in 30 stores, #7 in Indonesia's Entertainment Top Grossing |
| DramaBox (STORYMATRIX / Dianzhong) | 2023-04 | 307M | Top tier, also runs a Lite version, #5 in Indonesia |
| NetShort | 2024-07 | 162M | #4 in Indonesia |
| DramaWave / HotDrama (Skywork AI / Kunlun) | 2024-09 / 2026-04 | 152M / 1.48M | Same playbook of running two brands, #2 / #21 in Indonesia |
| Melolo (POLIGON, ByteDance family) | 2024-11 | 147M | Free drama with ads, #3 in Indonesia |
| ShortMax / GoodShort / FlickReels | 2023–2024 | 39M – 130M | Established mid-tier players |
| VibeShort, StoryReel, BlinkDrama | 2026-02 / 04 / 05 | 10M – 19M | A 2026-year newcomer that scaled much faster than Glimora (about +1.2M each over 7 days) |
| ReelyGo, JoyReels, iDrama | 2023–2025 | 1M – 14M | Small players in the same tier as Glimora |
| StarReelTV (same team) | 2026-02 | 760k, largely stopped | Glimora's predecessor / sister brand |
| Platform features: YouTube Shorts, short-drama clips on TikTok, Vidio, iQIYI, WeTV | — | Huge | Free, no separate app needed |

At 148k installs, Glimora is the smallest in this group.

### 5. Why it took off

1. **The category is proven, so copying it can make money** : short-drama coins / in-app subscriptions already work in Southeast Asia (nearly half of the top 40 Indonesian Entertainment Top Grossing spots are short dramas). Glimora's listing, website copy, genres (revenge, power struggles, fantasy romance) and IAP tiers are all standard industry templates.

2. **Low bar on the Southeast Asian top grossing charts** : with under 150k installs it reached #17–24 in Indonesia's Entertainment Top Grossing and #55–68 overall, which shows a small number of paying users can push rankings up (ranks are relative, so the bar can't be converted into a specific dollar amount).

3. **Paid acquisition drove the growth** : from 10-31 to 11-03 installs, one step added over 60k, rankings in 7 countries rose at once, with almost no ratings and no organic content spread. That is a textbook ad-driven pattern (inferred).

4. **Matrix swap to extend the run** : after StarReelTV wound down, the team relaunched under a new shell and a new name. On paid channels, the new brand's creatives and accounts are fresh, and the risk is split up. This is a common playbook for Chinese short-drama going global: DramaWave and HotDrama belong to the same company, and DramaBox also runs a Lite version.

### 6. Differentiation

**Essentially none.** The selling points on its site (large library, daily updates, multilingual subtitles, offline downloads, smart recommendations) are standard for every short-drama app. Only two things set it apart from rivals: it focuses on Southeast Asia and India, low-paying-barrier markets (it did not go after the US), and it replaces an old brand with a new disguise. Its chart placement comes from distribution and ad spend, not product differentiation.

### 7. Visibility and copycats

- Visibility: **Almost nobody knows about it yet.** No media coverage, no discussion on X, no organic TikTok content, no public revenue.

- Copycats: hardly. It is a copycat itself, and its category is already packed with players.

### 8. What to borrow

- "One product, many shells": the same backend and content library, wrapped in different Hong Kong entities, package names and brands, rotating paid acquisition. When one brand's ads fatigue, switch to the next, which also spreads out account and policy risk.

- Targets low-paying markets (Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam), using a small number of paying users to buy Top Grossing rankings and store exposure.

- Uses a web landing page plus attribution SDK to receive ad traffic, with `/lp/` carrying the campaign parameters, and off-store payments like Stripe (inferred).

### 9. Uncertain

- Which platform it spends on and how much: our Google / Meta / TikTok ad libraries don't match any of its advertisers (most likely an agency buying on its behalf), so we can't see the creatives.

- Revenue and retention: no ratings or reviews, so there's no way to judge.

- Who the parent company is, and whether the shows are self-produced or licensed: not found.

- Whether 11-05's later ranking drop reflects cutting spend or normal fluctuation needs a few more days of observation.
