WaveDrama: a short-drama app gained 88k installs in one week, one of 30 accounts a Vietnamese team is spreading
What it is A free Android app for watching vertical short dramas (CEO romance, revenge, werewolves), with no in-app purchases; episodes unlock by watching ads.
Why it's blowing up The same Vietnamese team has spread 30 same-template drama shells, and lately has been funneling its Spanish-speaking market paid acquisition budget into this one. The Spanish-language Entertainment category chart has a low bar, so a few tens of thousands of installs a week is enough to chart.
CHow you could follow Only suited to teams that already run paid acquisition and know ad monetization: build an ad-unlock player with properly licensed content, pick a language market that isn't saturated yet, and test creatives with short-drama climax clips on Meta with a small budget.
- Data (updated daily) · first launch 2026-08-31 · 11-07 installs 111,399
Android · Total installs worldwide Data 2026-10-29 → 2026-11-07 (10 days, 10 observations). Google's detail page only refreshes install counts every other day, so a flat day doesn't mean nobody installed.
A free short-drama app that launched two months ago with not a single rating squeezed into the Spain Google Play Entertainment Top Free chart at #76 this week. There's nothing in its product worth copying. What's worth watching is the playbook behind it: clone one template dozens of times, publish under a Vietnamese company's developer account, buy Facebook ads into Spanish-speaking markets, and let users recoup the cost by watching ads once they arrive. Below, we break down how this playbook works, who is running it, and whether indie developers should get in.
Aug 31: ten short-drama apps launched on the same day
On Aug 2026 31, a Vietnamese company called PANDORA GROUP COMPANY LIMITED published WaveDrama: Short Episodes on Google Play. It has nothing to do with the jewelry brand Pandora. This developer account has only this one app, and its contact email is a gmail address made of random letters and digits.
AuraReel, FlickReel, EmberDrama, BlazeReel, DriftReel, GlowBinge, CrimsonBinge, RushReel and Novelita all launched that same day. Package names follow the format com.<name>.<two words>.app, websites are <name>-<two words>.netlify.app, and they all draw on the same asset site, with images numbered by version: DramaGo is v22, LumaReel v28, MystReel v29, TidalDrama v30, and WaveDrama is v40 (official site image address, 11-06). Two days earlier, on Aug 29, the same template had already shipped 17 copies; on Oct 7, 6 more packages with Spanish names went up: Duvela, Tramoya, Cuentia, Kindrama, Escenara and Plotara. The developer names are all local Vietnamese companies: a steel mill, a pharma firm, a construction company, a labor exporter, a travel agency, a jam factory (Google Play developer info, 11-06).
The store page and official site say the same thing: "CEO romance, hidden twins, mystery and redemption, start watching for free," with a genre list of "arranged marriage, revenge, werewolves." The last line on the official site reads: "Watch the free episodes first; some episodes require unlocking." The sibling packages with the same template are more explicit in their terms: no subscriptions, no in-app purchases, unlocking costs nothing. That means unlocking by watching ads. WaveDrama is labeled "contains ads" and has no in-app purchases.
Its installs come in waves
Public Google Play install counts (third-party estimates plus store tiers, 11-06):
| Date | Total installs | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 10-25 | About 3,200 | Nearly two months since launch, almost no movement |
| 10-26 | About 23,100 | about 20k in just over a day |
| 10-29 to 10-31 | 23,133 | Three days with no growth at all |
| 11-01 | 52,235 | Another jump of about 29k |
| 11-03 | 90,230 | Another jump of about 38k |
| 11-06 | 111,399 | +88k in the last 7 days |
An app that grows organically doesn't look like this. Twenty thousand a day, then zero for three days, then another thirty to forty thousand: someone is switching the ad budget on and off (inferred). On the store, it has not a single rating or review.
It has only appeared on the free Entertainment category charts in three countries: best in Spain at #76 (11-06), #77 in Argentina (10-30), and #102 in Mexico (10-31). It has never made the overall chart or the Top Grossing chart.
Where users come from: a clip of a show on Facebook, and the tap lands on an ad
Searching the public ad libraries of Meta, TikTok (Europe) and Google turned up none of WaveDrama's own ads. Public libraries only show part of the picture, so not finding ads doesn't mean it isn't advertising. But its sibling packages advertise quite openly (Meta ad library, 11-06):
- The Facebook page for AuraReel (about 2,400 likes, later renamed "Practical Apps For Everyone") is running about 1,200 ads at once, 86% of them video, placed on Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, Threads and Audience Network, with an "Install App" button.
- The LumaReel page "LumaWorld" is running about 550 ads; DriftReel and EmberDrama share one page, running about 170 ads.
- The copy is basically one line, translated per market. In Spanish: "¡Descarga y mira episodios COMPLETOS GRATIS!" In English: "Download Now & Watch FULL Episodes for FREE!" The same line also appears in Arabic, Hindi, Indonesian and Portuguese.
The approach is to cut the climax of a popular short drama and write "Download to watch the full episode" on Facebook. The comments on the sibling packages spell out what happens after the tap:
"Saw an ad on Facebook saying to continue watching here. I installed it and got bombarded with ads, and a pile of shows, none of them the one I was just watching." AuraReel comment, 10-24,37 people found it helpful
"The show in the Facebook ad won't open. Tried 5 times!" LumaReel comment, 10-16,25 people found it helpful
"You want the app to be a home-screen app so people can't uninstall it... and there aren't enough shows." LumaReel comment, 10-01,51 people found it helpful
WaveDrama has no reviews, so we don't know whether it has these problems. That it only targets Spanish-speaking markets is an inference, based on it only charting in Spanish-speaking countries and on its sibling packages' Spanish creatives.
Where the money comes from: as long as an install costs less than the ads the user watches
There are no in-app purchases, so revenue comes entirely from ads: interstitials and rewarded video (the "unlock" step). The sibling packages' privacy policies list AdMob, Firebase, Adjust and the Meta SDK. The math goes like this: buy a user in cheaper-install regions like Spanish-speaking markets, the Middle East or Southeast Asia, and if the ad revenue they generate before uninstalling exceeds what you paid for them, scale up; if not, cut back (inferred, since payback rates aren't visible from outside). If the reviews' claim about "set as default home screen" is true, it's a way to slow uninstalls and squeeze out more rounds of ads. That violates Google Play policy and carries a takedown risk (not verified by unpacking the app).
As for how it charts: on 11-06, WaveDrama ranked #75 in Spain's Entertainment Top Free chart, adding about 103k in 7 days; the #76 spot was WaveDrama's 88k. In this category, a few tens of thousands of installs a week is enough to land in the top 100. On the same day, 21 of the top 200 on Spain's chart were same-template siblings, 10 in Argentina and 6 in Mexico (Google Play charts, 11-06). Charting also brings a bit of extra organic store traffic.
Why spread across 30 accounts: each sits under a different company name, so one getting banned doesn't drag the others down; whichever does best gets the budget shifted to it. That week AuraReel added 7 in 550 days and WaveDrama added 88k, with a nearly identical product, the only difference being how much budget each received.
Who it's competing with
| Who | Scale (Google Play, 11-06) | How it differs |
|---|---|---|
| ReelShort, DramaBox | About 307M installs each; ReelShort +7M in 5.51 days | Legitimate platforms, self-produced or licensed libraries, earning through coins and VIP |
| FreeReels, NetShort, Melolo, PineDrama (TikTok) | 84M to 246M | Same as above, with licensed content and brands |
| DramaWave | 152M, launched 2024-09 | Its name is essentially a swap of WaveDrama's; searching "WaveDrama" mostly brings up this one. Whether the name was chosen to ride on WaveDrama's recognition can't be confirmed. |
| Halo Reels / Pro / Max | About 26M in total, about 7M in 3 days | Ad-monetized shells of the same kind, spread across many versions |
| Coin Drama, MixReels, Drama World Pro, CashDrama, HotDrama and others | Varies | The same playbook |
| 30+ same-template sibling packages | Total 1,100 million+ | One team; the only differences are language and budget |
No one has covered this category. WaveDrama hasn't been mentioned on X in 60 days, and TikTok search doesn't find it. Few people know about it, but plenty of people are building it.
If it were you
C: Learn something, but following it isn't worth it. This is an ad-arbitrage business, not a product business. Dozens or hundreds of the same shell already exist, and this one team alone has spread 30 or more accounts, with a whole paid-acquisition team shifting budget daily based on payback rates.
Who it suits: Small teams already running paid acquisition for tool or casual-game apps, with Meta or Google UAC accounts and ad-monetization experience, who can work out the cost per install against ad revenue, and who want to test it as one more arbitrage category.
Who it doesn't suit: Indie devs who've never run ads (there's no product moat here, it's all paid acquisition); anyone aiming to build a legit short-drama platform (licensed or self-produced libraries compete with ReelShort and DramaBox on content and capital); anyone who fears bans (using others' shows as creatives and nudging users to set it as default launcher carries copyright and policy risk on both fronts).
How to do it: If you do test it, skip the grayest parts. Source content through proper licensing (licensing older shows on an ad-revenue-share basis is a common deal, inferred). Build the app as a player with ad-unlocked episodes, and don't do the "set as default launcher" trick. Get one account and one language working first, then consider multiple accounts.
How to get installs: Meta short-video ads, with creatives showing the climax of an episode and a line like "Download to watch the full episode, free." Start with languages outside Spanish-speaking markets that this team hasn't saturated yet. Its sibling apps already cover Spanish, Arabic, Hindi, Indonesian, Portuguese, and English; look for languages not yet covered (inferred, not checked one by one). Test each creative with a small budget, and only scale once the cost per install falls below first-week ad revenue.
When to get in: No clear time window. The ceiling of this business depends on when Google Play starts pulling these shells in bulk.
Signs you've misread it: (1) If this batch of same-template apps gets pulled en masse over the next month or two, or sibling apps' active Meta ad count (AuraReel alone runs about 1,200 ads, 11-06) halves or more, the arbitrage no longer pays, and even "worth learning from" should be discounted. (2) Conversely, if this team keeps shipping a new batch every month and active ad counts keep rising, the margins are thicker than they look from outside, and teams with strong paid-acquisition capability should run the numbers seriously.

- Verified Matrix flooding (borrowed Vietnamese company developer accounts): Developer PANDORA GROUP COMPANY LIMITED, contact email is a random gmail, website is a Netlify template, assets at webapps-assets.pages.dev/apptest-v40-wavedrama (sibling apps are v22/v28/v29/v30). Launched the same day as its siblings (08-31), and there are 30 or more apps on the same template (googleplay library).
- Inferred Paid acquisition (most likely Meta): The install curve is pulse-shaped and charts only in Spanish-speaking countries. Same-matrix LumaReel, EmberDrama, AuraReel, and DriftReel are confirmed running on Meta (metaads.app_link). This app shows no ads on Meta, TikTok, or Google ad libraries pointing to it.
- Verified Spanish-market Entertainment free chart: 11-06 In Spain's Entertainment free chart top 200, 21 are same-template siblings; Argentina has 10, Mexico 6. Rose 7 days, +88k, to #76 in Spain (googleplay.chart_rank).
- Inferred Name collision with DramaWave: The name is DramaWave with the words swapped. Searching "WaveDrama" mostly returns DramaWave. Whether it's deliberate can't be confirmed.
Why WaveDrama: Short Episodes (com.wavedrama.shortepisodes.app) can run
In one line: it isn't a standalone short-drama product but one more account in a Vietnamese "Netlify-template short-drama shell matrix." The developer uses a Vietnamese shell company account, the contact email is a random gmail, and the launch date, package-name format, and website template match AuraReel, LumaReel, DramaGo, and 30 other siblings. Installs jump in bursts, the pattern of ad budgets switched on and off. It sits with a dozen sibling apps on the Entertainment free charts in Spanish-speaking markets (Spain, Argentina, Mexico). The product has no differentiation; the only difference is which language and how much budget this team allocated at a given time.

The curve is pulse-shaped: 10-26 one day about +20k, then nearly 0 for three days, then 11-01 and 11-03 each jump 3–40k. Our collection only gets a new value every two days (Play's install bands update that way), but 10-29 to 10-31 stayed flat for three straight days, and before 10-25 AppstoreSpy also showed only about 3 thousand. This isn't organic word of mouth; someone is paying for ads.
The chart bar is low: 11-06 the #75 app on Spain's Entertainment free chart gained +103k over 7 days, and this one was #76 (+88k). On Latin American and Spanish Entertainment category charts, a few tens of thousands of installs a week is enough to reach the top 100.
2. Competitors
Legit short-drama platforms (all earning through IAP or subscriptions): ReelShort (307M installs, launched 2022), DramaBox (307M), FreeReels (246M), NetShort (162M), DramaWave (152M, 2024-09, Skywork), Melolo (147M), GoodShort (99M), TikTok's PineDrama (84M). These platforms add 7 days of new installs between 770k and 5.5M (googleplay.app_profile 11-06). They have licensed or in-house libraries and earn from coins and VIP.
Ad-monetized short-drama shells using the same playbook: Halo Reels / Pro / Max (about 3M combined over 7 days), Coin Drama, MixReels, Drama World Pro, CashDrama, HotDrama / HotReels (Hong Kong shell companies), Short Drama: Movie & Series (VTN Global), and others (googleplay library).
Name collision:
- DramaWave (com.dramawave.app, 152M installs). WaveDrama is DramaWave's name reversed. Searching "WaveDrama Short Episodes" on Jina, the top results are DramaWave. Whether it's deliberate can't be proven, but the names are close enough to pick up some store-search traffic.
- ShortsWave (com.shorts.wave.drama, HALOFUN, 6.86M installs). The "WaveDrama" on tarrific.tv's client wall is this app, unrelated to this product.
Same-template siblings (the key finding): Apps in the googleplay library on the same template (package name com.<name>.<two words>.app, website <name>-<two words>.netlify.app, gmail contact, launched after August) include:
- 08-29 a batch of 17 apps: about 8.97M installs combined, +1.45M over 7 days
- 08-31 a batch of 10 apps: about 2.37M installs combined, +1.21M over 7 days. WaveDrama, AuraReel, FlickReel, EmberDrama, BlazeReel, DriftReel, GlowBinge, CrimsonBinge, RushReel, and Novelita are all in this batch.
- 10-07 a batch of 6 new apps with Spanish names (Duvela, Tramoya, Cuentia, Kindrama, Escenara, Plotara): +400k over 7 days
Every developer behind this batch has a Vietnamese local company name: steel mill, pharmaceutical, construction, labor export, travel agency, jam factory… (googleplay library 11-06).
3. Growth tactics
- Matrix flooding (confirmed): See above. WaveDrama's developer is "PANDORA GROUP COMPANY LIMITED," which has no link to the jewelry brand Pandora (a Jina search only turned up news of a jewelry company building a factory in Vietnam). Like its siblings, it uses a borrowed or bought company developer account. The upside is that if one account gets banned, the others aren't dragged down.
- Paid acquisition, most likely Meta (no direct evidence):
- Our Meta ad library, TikTok Europe ad library, and Google ad library show no ads pointing to this app (metaads.app_link / ad, tiktokads.app_link, googleads.adv_app, checked 11-06). These libraries only track Pages on a watchlist or those appearing in keyword search, so not finding ads doesn't mean none were run.
- Same-matrix siblings are confirmed running on Meta: LumaReel 42 ads, EmberDrama 42 ads, AuraReel 32 ads, DriftReel 10 ads (metaads.app_link n_active). An earlier report saw AuraReel's Page with about 1,200 active ads at one point, with copy in Spanish, Arabic, English, and other languages, reading "Descarga ahora para ver todo gratis."
- Add the pulse-shaped install curve and the fact that it only charts in Spanish-speaking countries, and the inference is that WaveDrama is the account that got the Spanish-market budget.
- Spanish-market category-chart arbitrage (confirmed): 11-06 In Spain's Entertainment free chart top 200, 21 are same-template siblings; Argentina has 10, Mexico 6 (googleplay.chart_rank). In Spanish-speaking markets the cost per install is low and the category-chart bar is low, so one account getting a few tens of thousands of installs a week can reach the chart, and the store picks up some extra organic traffic on top.
- Content and creators: none. x-radar finds 60 results for "WaveDrama" in the last 0 days; TikHub returns 0 videos for "wavedrama". The web only has auto-generated pages like AppBrain and Similarweb (Similarweb indexes the Ecuador store).
- How the money comes back (inferred from sibling packages): buy installs at low-cost Meta regions, then earn back through AdMob interstitials and rewarded videos ("unlock" means watching an ad), with Adjust and the Meta SDK for attribution and budget shifts by ROAS. Sibling packages' negative reviews focus on "ads tricking you into downloading" and "being bombarded with ads," with some also mentioning "required to be set as default launcher." WaveDrama has no rating yet, and we haven't verified whether these issues apply to it.
4. Visibility and copycats
- No public revenue, no discussion in media, on X or TikTok, and nobody is researching it. Hardly anyone knows about it yet.
- It's a copycat from the start. The model (a short-drama shell monetized with ads plus paid acquisition) is already crowded: Halo Reels, ShortFly and Drama World each have multiple Pro / Max versions, and this Vietnamese team alone has spread across 30+ accounts.
5. Verdict
- Why it's gaining traction: the team put budget behind this app, targeting Spanish-speaking markets where the Entertainment category chart is easier to crack. Users aren't coming on their own; they're bought. Retention and monetization rely on interstitial and rewarded ads, and with no ratings there's no visible sign of retention.
- Differentiation: none. The name and description are a new set (CEO romance, twins, werewolves), but the page structure is identical to its sibling packages. The only thing that could pass as a distinguishing feature is the name swap with DramaWave and the focus on Spanish markets, and neither explains why it took off.
- What to borrow: (1) use short-drama clips as creatives, funnel users into a free shell, and earn back through ads; this arbitrage works in low-cost regions. (2) spread across many developer accounts to hedge against bans, publish in bulk, and split budgets by language and region. (3) small-language, small-country free category charts, where a few tens of thousands of weekly installs can chart and bring some organic traffic along with it.
- Uncertain: I don't have direct evidence of which channel it runs on (Meta or Google UAC); ad payback and retention are unknown; whether the content is licensed hasn't been verified; and I don't know whether it might be pulled for policy violations.
