English Practice: AI Coach · NorthRiver

# A small Vietnamese camera-and-dialer shop spent two months getting its AI English tutor to 470k installs, but this path is already crowded

**What it is** An AI English speaking tutor app: a 30-day plan matched to your level, a few short tasks a day, sentence-by-sentence pronunciation scoring, and free chat with an AI coach named Eli.

**Why it took off** AI English tutoring is a hot category on Google Play, and it most likely got its start from paid Google acquisition, then pushed its store rating to 4.8 by only prompting happy users for reviews. Read-aloud and scoring use the phone's built-in features, so the cost is low enough that ads can pay back.

**C** **How you could follow it** Don't build another generic one. Using its low-cost structure, pick a non-English native market (Arabic, Hindi, etc.) or a specific scenario (interviews, professional English for going abroad), test with a small budget on Google app ads, and stop if the numbers don't work.

Grade C: the playbook is learnable, but the category is crowded: in six months 34 similar new apps each reached 100k installs, it takes less than 1% of new installs, growth is slowing, and it has never hit a top chart. Following it with another generic white-label app isn't worth it; only switching language markets or scenarios still leaves a little room. Not many people know about it yet

English Practice: AI Coach launched at the end of August, and by Nov 6 it had 467k installs and a 4.8 rating on Google Play. Its product is no different from dozens of others; it gained traction from a hot category, bought traffic, and a very low-cost way of doing things. This piece covers how it did it, who is competing with it, and where to start if you also want to build an AI English app.

### An English app called "Eli Is Online"

Open it and first answer four questions: what you're interested in (say, shopping), your English level, what you want it for, and how many minutes a day you can practice. On screen, a girl with headphones on her avatar spins around, with "Generating your personal study plan…" and a progress bar below: "Your 30-day challenge is almost ready, 92%".

On the home screen, a card at the top reads "ELI IS ONLINE" next to the same girl's avatar; tap it and you can chat freely in English with the AI coach named Eli. Below are today's three tasks: a speaking lesson (set in a coffee shop), a listening lesson (an early-morning train announcement), and 5 minutes of free conversation with Eli. An orange "PRO" button sits in the top right.

The store listing says 250 lessons and 500 questions, with word-by-word pronunciation scoring for each sentence and a switch between American and British accents. In today's AI English apps, each of these features is standard.

The developer behind it is NorthRiver. The privacy policy says "NorthRiver STUDIO", based in Vietnam, with a Gmail contact address. The other apps under the same account are a dual-camera app, a GPS watermark camera, a dialer and a QR scanner, each with only 1K to 10K installs, nothing to do with education. The website is an empty template on Vercel, and the homepage reads "Welcome to our platform. A modern solution for managing your content." The privacy policy for this English app is titled "AI Learning", but the body talks about prompts, AI image generation and HD generation. It was clearly copied straight from some other app.

Put simply, a tool shop made a new listing from a generic template. There is no education team behind it.

### How it grew

AppstoreSpy estimates (the observation points are smoothed, so don't take single-day numbers too seriously):

| Timeline | Total installs | Rough pace |
|---|---|---|
| 8-25 → 9-02 | 1,000 → 17k | First week after launch |
| 9-02 → 10-02 | 17k → 214k | About 6,600 a day, peak month |
| 10-02 → 10-08 | → 365k | Two jumps of roughly 50K at once |
| 10-13 → 10-28 | → 440k | 4,000–5,000 per day |
| 10-29 → 11-06 | 440k → 467k | About 3,300 a day (Google Play installs, 11-06) |

September was the peak, and it slowed clearly after mid-October, now around three to four thousand a day.

Where did all this volume come from? The only thing I can find is blank. On TikTok, searching its name and "Eli AI English", the first 30 videos are about other apps like Fluently, Pingo and Elyra. On X, not a single post in 90 days mentions it. On the web there are only APK download sites and auto-generated data-site pages. No creators, no press, and the developer has no social accounts. A month of +200K with no visible organic spread points to paid acquisition, most likely Google App Campaigns (inference). Its curve changes in steps, like it follows a budget, which is the usual Vietnamese tool-shop playbook: buy installs through Google, then monetize with AdMob ads. Its privacy policy names AdMob and Firebase.

On the charts, it has charted in only one of Google Play's 30 countries: the UAE Education Top Free chart, where it reached #120,11-06 on 10-29 and then fell to #165. Most of its volume probably comes from countries not tracked here, such as Pakistan, Bangladesh and Egypt (inference, unverified).

### 1,949 ratings, only 4 with written reviews

The ratings look odd. 11-06 has 1,949 ratings in total, 1,809 of them five-star, and only 4 reviews with text. In a normal app, written reviews usually make up a sizable share of ratings.

The most likely cause is Google's in-app rating prompt: it only asks for a star tap, no writing, and tends to appear right after a user finishes a lesson and is in a good mood (inference). Whether the ratings were manipulated can't be seen from outside. Either way, a 4.8 rating plus a "100K+" badge makes a paid click more likely to turn into an install.

This also means: **there is no outside evidence of why this app's users stay or why they pay.** No review quotes, and it has never charted in any country's top grossing list.

### Where the money comes from

The store page lists ads and in-app purchases, priced from $2.99 to $79.99. It has never appeared on the top grossing charts in 30 countries, so subscription revenue is probably small, and ads are likely what pays back (inference). It's also possible it's still testing and losing money.

What makes "free + ads" work is cost. The store page says listening uses "English voices already on your phone", with adjustable speed and pitch, meaning read-aloud runs on the system TTS at no cost. Pronunciation scoring probably uses the system speech recognition (inference). Only free-form conversation with Eli calls a paid large model. Each free user costs very little, so ad revenue has a chance to cover it.

Users can't feel this trick. To them, it looks no different from the dozens of other apps next door.

### Who it competes with: a category that's already crowded

AI English speaking-practice apps are one of the most crowded categories on Google Play over the past 2025 to 2026 years. 11-06 counted: education apps launched less than half a year ago, with over 100K installs and English / Speak / Tutor in the name, number 34. Together they have 40.5M installs, and in the last 7 days they added 2.84M in total. English Practice: AI Coach accounts for only 26.7K of that 2.84M, less than 1%.

| Competitors | Launched | Scale (Google Play, 11-06) | How it compares |
|---|---|---|---|
| Supernova AI: Spoken English | 2025-01 | 26M, 7 days +575K, #2 on India's Education Top Free | Leader in the Indian market, roughly 50 times its size |
| Learna(Codeway) | 2024-09 | 54.4M, 7 days +510k | A Turkish paid-acquisition giant, multilingual, charted on Vietnam's Top Grossing |
| Linguza: AI English Tutor | 2026-05 | 9.77M, 7 days +360K, #3 on the UAE Education Top Free | Same playbook (white-label plus paid acquisition), 20 times bigger, also on the UAE chart |
| Hilingo(Pera Soft) | 2025-08 | 1.77M, 7 days +220k | Also a Vietnamese team, started earlier and at larger scale |
| LearnUp(iKame) | 2026-07 | 920k, +58k in 7 days | A big Vietnamese tool company's similar app from the same period, charted on Indonesia's Education Top Grossing |
| BetterSpeak, LunaSpeak, TutorMe, Elyra and others | 2026 H1 | Each 940K to 6.65M | Same batch of white-label apps, most of them larger, and some publishers run multiple packages |
| Praktika, Speak, ELSA, Stimuler | 2016–2024 | 12.8M to 43.7M | Branded, with in-house pronunciation assessment, all charting on Top Grossing |
| Duolingo, ChatGPT voice, Google Translate speaking practice | — | Billion-scale | Free from big companies, AI conversation already built in |

It is itself one of the copycats: LearnUp, Lingtutor, Eruden and Birdgo launched the same summer on the same template. White-label apps in the middle can't say how they differ from each other, so the only thing to compare is who can afford the ad buys and who buys them well.

### If it were you

**You can learn a playbook from this, but don't build another generic AI English tutor.** The demand for this category is real, but supply is already so large that 34 new apps are competing for the same space. An undifferentiated white-label app gets less than 1% of the share and can't reach any top chart.

**Who it suits:** small teams that can run Google App Campaigns, work out what each install costs and how many ads one user will see. Ideally they also understand a non-English home market (Arabic, Hindi, Urdu, Indonesian, etc.) and can make the interface, explanations and conversation scenarios feel like they were written by locals, not translated.

**Who it doesn't suit:** teams that don't buy ads and expect organic store search to bring users (it has not a single organic mention on TikTok or X, and its 470K installs were bought), teams that want to compete with Praktika or ELSA on pronunciation assessment technology, and teams that expect big money from subscriptions (its in-app purchases go up to $79.99, yet it has never charted on any top grossing list).

**How to build it:** copy its cost structure. Read-aloud on system TTS, scoring on system speech recognition, and only free conversation on a large model, so each free user costs little enough for ads to cover. On top of that, change at least one thing. Switch the language market, for example teaching explanations in Arabic or Hindi and designing lessons around the mistakes locals make most often. Or switch the scenario, such as interview English, workplace English for nurses or seafarers, or tour-guide English, and put that scenario directly in the title.

**How to get users:** test Google App Campaigns with a small budget, testing titles and screenshots at the same time. On the store page, put a "30-day plan" and "today's task" in the first screen, following its layout. Show the rating prompt only right after a user finishes a lesson. If the cost of one install is higher than a user's 30-day ad revenue, stop.

**Deadline:** the window for this kind of white-label app is closing. Its daily installs since mid-October are already half of what they were in September. If you do build it, aim to ship and test the first version before Q1 of 2027. Later than that, big companies' built-in free AI conversation will only spread further.

**How you'd be wrong:** ① if it or a similar white-label app charts on some country's top grossing list in the next month or two, that means subscriptions can make money too, and this business is better than described here; ② if its daily installs climb back to five or six thousand or more, that means paid acquisition is still paying off; ③ conversely, if bigger white-label apps like Linguza and LearnUp also start losing volume, then even the room to "switch language markets or scenarios" is shrinking, so don't enter.

Where users come from

- Inference **Paid acquisition (presumably Google App Campaigns) + AdMob monetization** : in September, 30 days went from 17K to 210K with no sign of organic spread, the curve rose in steps then slowed; the privacy policy lists AdMob/Firebase; ad libraries don't track it, and the Google Transparency Center was rate-limited so it couldn't be checked

- Inferred **Store search / ASO** : title stacks "English Practice" + "AI Coach", description repeats speaking / pronunciation / conversation; 4.8 rating + 100K+ badge

- Inferred **Review prompting** : 1,949 ratings but only 4 written reviews, star distribution almost all 5-star (app_snap)

- **Verified** **TikTok / X / press / Reddit** : TikHub, x-radar and Jina search turned up no content or discussion about it

## English Practice: AI Coach (com.wedo.dailyenglish.aicoach): why it got traction

> Google Play, developer NorthRiver (a small Vietnamese tools-app studio), research date 2026-11-06. Data sources: googleplay library (app / app_snap / app_day_ext (AppstoreSpy estimates) / chart_rank, from 2026-10-29), Play store page, APKPure version page, developer privacy policy page, AppBrain/Softonic search snippets, TikHub, x-radar, metaads/googleads/tiktokads libraries.

### Bottom line

It isn't a product that "broke out". A Vietnamese tools studio shipped an AI English speaking coach as a new SKU, using a generic template + paid acquisition (likely Google App Campaigns) + a mix of ads and subscriptions. In a niche already crowded with look-alikes, it reached about 470k installs in 2+ months. It's small for its category (26.7k installs in the last 7 days, versus 2.84M combined for similar young apps over the same period), growth is slowing, it has no Top Grossing ranking, and there's no identifiable product differentiation. Its value is as another sample of the "Vietnamese tools factory mass-producing AI English apps" playbook, not as a standalone success.

### 1. Basics and numbers

| Metric | Value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Store launch | 2026-08-27 (AppstoreSpy has recorded 1,055 installs as of 8-25; the launch date may have been partially reset) | googleplay.app, app_day_ext |
| Total installs | 466,989(2026-11-06) | googleplay.app_snap |
| New in the last 7 days | 26,747 (about 3.8K/day) | app_profile |
| Rating | 4.82 rating, 1,949 ratings, but **only 4 written reviews** | app_snap |
| Charts | Only in the UAE Education Top Free chart, ranked #120→#165 (gradually sliding from 10-29 to 11-06); none of the 30 tracked storefronts show any other chart, and it has no Top Grossing placement | chart_rank |
| Monetization | Contains ads + in-app purchases $2.99–$79.99; privacy policy names AdMob and Firebase | Play store page, northriver.vercel.app/privacy-policy-for-ai-learning |
| Version | 1.0.6(9-01)→1.0.7(9-03)→1.1.4(9-27)→1.1.5(10-01)→1.1.8(10-18)→1.1.9(10-29)→1.2.1(10-30) | APKPure version page |

**Install curve (AppstoreSpy estimates, averaged between observations; don't trust single days):**

- 8-25 → 9-02:1.1K → 17K (volume picked up in the first week)

- 9-02 → 10-02:17K → 214K, about 6.6K/day (peak period)

- 10-02 → 10-08: two jumps totaling about 50k (summed over several days), reaching 365k

- 10-13 → 10-28: about 4–5K/day

- 10-29 → 11-06:440K → 467K, about 3.3K/day (our own sampling)

Takeaway: September was the paid-spend peak, and it clearly slowed from mid-October. At peak it averaged about 6–7K/day; now it's about 3–4K/day.

**Rating anomaly:** 1,949 ratings but only 4 written reviews, with the star distribution almost entirely 5 stars (11-06 histogram [69, 0, 0, 69, 1809]). Normal apps usually get a sizable share of written reviews. This pattern looks like the Google in-app rating prompt (star only, no text), shown only to happy users (e.g. right after finishing a lesson), which is review gating. We can't verify whether ratings were faked. Ratings ÷ installs ≈ 0.42%.

**Card correction:** The recall card said 1.0.7 on APKPure was uploaded 2026-03-09 and has actually been running longer. The APKPure version page shows 1.0.7 is **2026-09-03** , with the earliest version 1.0.6 dated 9-01, and the AppstoreSpy curve also starts at 8-25. So it is indeed a new app from late August 2026, and the listing date wasn't significantly reset.

### 2. Who the developer is

- The name is NorthRiver (the privacy policy says "NorthRiver STUDIO", country Vietnam); contact email haivan.studioteam@gmail.com; the website is an empty Vercel template ("Welcome to our platform. A modern solution for managing your content."); the developer site also has northriver159.blogspot.com.

- AppBrain summary: "NorthRiver … currently has 8 apps on Google Play, is active since 2018, and has in total collected about 3 million installs"; APKPure shows "All 18 Apps". Other apps include DualShot dual-camera (1K+), GeoSnap GPS camera (10K+), Phone Dialer, QR scanner, and Permission Manager (2024-04, now unpublished), none related to education.

- The `com.wedo.*` package name doesn't match the developer name, and the privacy policy title is a generic "AI Learning" whose content was reused from an AI image-generation app (it mentions prompts, AI image generation, HD generation). This indicates template-based, fast package production, with no product team focused on education.

- This app has about 470k installs, the largest of this account's roughly 3M cumulative installs. It's the studio's bet on the AI education category.

### 3. Competitors: who else does the same thing

AI English speaking coaches are one of the most crowded categories on Google Play over the past 2025–2026 years. The googleplay library alone has **34 education apps launched within ≤180 days, with ≥100k installs, and titles containing english/speak/language/tutor, totaling 40.5M installs, with 2.84M new installs over the last 7 days** ; this app's 26.7k is only about 0.9% of that.

| Product | Channel | Launched | Scale (googleplay library, 2026-11-06) | How it differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Supernova AI: Spoken English | Android | 2025-01 | 26M installs, +575k in 7 days, #2 in India Education Top Free | The leader in the India-market positioning, more than 50× its size |
| Learna(Codeway) | Android/iOS | 2024-09 | 54.4M, +510k in 7 days, #41 Top Grossing in Vietnam | A big Turkish paid-acquisition player, multilingual, has Top Grossing placements |
| Linguza: AI English Tutor(NXL AI) | Android | 2026-05 | 9.77M, +360k in 7 days, #3 UAE Education Top Free | Same playbook (white-label + paid acquisition), but 20× larger, also on the AE charts |
| SpeakEasy: AI English Speaking | Android | — | 4.65M, 7 days +340k | White-label peer, much larger volume |
| Hilingo(Pera Soft) | Android | 2025-08 | 1.77M, +220k in 7 days, #6 Vietnam Education Top Free | A similar product from another Vietnamese team |
| LearnUp(iKame / Begamob) | Android | 2026-07 | 920k, +58k in 7 days, #21 Indonesia Top Grossing Education | A similar product from the large Vietnamese tools company iKame, launched around the same time |
| Lingtutor: AI English(MTD Technology) | Android | 2026-07 | 115k, +59k in 7 days | A similar product from another Vietnamese company, same period |
| BetterSpeak(HubX) | Android | 2026-01 | 4.89M, +170k in 7 days, #115 Top Grossing in Vietnam | A similar product from a Turkish tools company |
| LunaSpeak / SpeakUp AI(Growly) | Android | 2026-06 | 6.65M / 1.43M | The same multi-package matrix approach from one developer |
| TutorMe, Elyra, YayTalk, Uplingo, AI Language Learning (ATQ) | Android | 2026-04 to 06 | Each 940K–2.53M | A large batch of white-label AI English speaking coaches launched in the same period |
| Praktika / Speak / ELSA / Loora / Stimuler | Android+iOS | 2016–2024 | 12.8M–43.7M, all with Top Grossing placements | Brand leader, proprietary speech evaluation / lifelike avatars, mature pricing |
| Duolingo(Video Call / Max) | Android+iOS | 2013 | 990M, +3.79M in 7 days | Big-tech feature, AI conversation already built in |
| Google Translate speaking practice, ChatGPT / Gemini voice mode | Big-company features | 2025 | Billion-scale | Free AI conversation alternatives |
| Elispeak (elispeak.com, whose AI tutor is also called Eli) | Web + Chrome | — | Not verified | Name collision, unrelated to this app's "Eli" persona (unverified) |

**How is it different from its peers?** The product features (30-day plan + daily tasks + per-word pronunciation scoring + free talk + US/UK accent switching) are nearly the standard feature set for this category. The only visible difference is in the **cost structure** : the description says listening uses "your device's English voices" (the phone's built-in TTS, with adjustable speed and pitch), and pronunciation scoring most likely also uses the system speech recognition, with only Free Talk calling a large model. So its per-user cost is very low, which allows "free + ads" traffic. This is not a differentiator users can perceive.

### 4. Growth levers: where users come from

| Channel | Evidence | Confirmed? |
|---|---|---|
| Paid acquisition (most likely Google App Campaigns / UAC) | The curve is stepped: September averaged 6–7K/day, dropping to 3–4K/day from mid-to-late October, which looks budget-driven; the developer has no social media or content presence; it only appears on education charts in small countries like the UAE where paid acquisition is cheap and charts are often aggregated; the standard playbook for Vietnamese tools studios is UAC + AdMob monetization. | No (inferred; our meta/google/tiktok ad libraries don't track it, the Google Ads Transparency Center API was rate-limited so the check didn't complete, and the developer domain has 0 ads in the Transparency Center, but app ads land on Play and wouldn't be hosted on that domain) |
| Store search / ASO | The title stacks two high-frequency terms, "English Practice" and "AI Coach", and the description repeats English speaking / pronunciation / conversation; a 4.8 rating + 100K+ badge can improve conversion | Partly confirmed (metadata is visible, but the share of search traffic is unknown) |
| Prompted reviews | 1,949 ratings with only 4 written reviews, almost all 5-star | No (the structure strongly suggests it, but it can't be directly proven) |
| TikTok / creators | TikHub searches for "English Practice AI Coach" and "Eli AI English app": the top 30 results are all other apps like Fluently, Voca, Pingo, Elyra, and none are this one | Confirmed: no visible content marketing |
| X / Reddit / press | x-radar 90 days 0 entries; Jina search only surfaced APK mirror sites, AppBrain, Softonic and Similarweb-style auto-generated pages | Confirmed none |
| legacy user migration / cross-promotion | the account's other apps are all tiny (1K–10K range), so they can't have driven hundreds of thousands of installs | Largely ruled out |

Where the money comes from: free users bring in AdMob ad revenue, and a few buy subscriptions/IAP at $2.99–$79.99. It doesn't appear on any store's Top Grossing chart, which suggests IAP revenue is small; ad revenue is probably the main return, or paid acquisition is still running at a loss.

### 5. Why it took off

1. **A category tailwind, not a product edge.** From 2025–2026, "AI English speaking practice" was a hot category on Google Play in emerging markets (34 new apps each passed 100k in six months). Large models let a small shop build an English app that "talks and scores" in a few weeks, and demand (wanting to practice speaking without paying for a tutor) has long existed in India, Southeast Asia and the Middle East.

2. **Bought with paid traffic.** In September it climbed from 17k to 210k in 30 days with no sign of organic word-of-mouth, which points to paid traffic; it then slowed, consistent with budget cuts or falling ROI.

3. **The store listing converts well.** A keyword-heavy title, a 4.8 rating (prompting reviews), a 100K+ badge and 5 feature screenshots turn bought clicks into installs.

4. **Low-cost architecture can carry free traffic.** Device TTS, on-device recognition, and a large model only for free conversation, plus AdMob monetization, keep the loss per user small.

Why users stay or pay: no evidence. No written reviews, no Top Grossing ranking, and no retention data are available.

### 6. Differentiation

**No recognizable differentiation.** Its feature mix (a personalized 30-day plan, daily tasks, word-level pronunciation feedback, a free-chat AI persona named Eli, US/UK accents) is nearly identical to dozens of white-label contemporaries such as Linguza, TutorMe, Elyra, LearnUp and Hilingo, and far behind the brands and pronunciation tech of Praktika, Speak and ELSA. It reached 470k because of "hot category + paid acquisition + store conversion," not because it was different.

### 7. Visibility and copycats

- **Visibility: almost no one knows about it.** No revenue disclosures, no press, no X/TikTok discussion; only APK mirrors and data sites auto-index it. But the playbook it follows (white-label AI English practice plus paid acquisition) is already crowded.

- **Copycats:** it is itself one of the copycats. Other apps using the same template in the same period include LearnUp (iKame, July), Lingtutor (MTD, July), Eruden (September) and Birdgo (October). No direct copy of it has been spotted yet.

### 8. What to borrow

- Ship fast from a template in a validated hot category, use a low-cost stack (system TTS / recognition plus a few large-model calls) to push per-user cost down to what ads can cover, measure with UAC, and stop if it doesn't work. This is the common playbook of Vietnamese and Turkish tool studios.

- Show the in-app rating prompt only to happy users who just finished a lesson, to pile up high scores fast.

- Its result is also a counterexample: among 34 similar new apps, undifferentiated white-label ones got under 1% of the traffic and couldn't crack Top Grossing. To copy this approach, switching language markets (e.g. Arabic or Hindi UI) or vertical scenarios (job-interview English, travel English) has a better shot than building yet another general-purpose one.

### 9. Uncertain

- No direct evidence on paid channels, spend or ROI (the ad libraries don't track it, and the Google transparency endpoint is rate-limited).

- Which countries the installs come from is unknown. Of the 30 tracked storefronts, only the UAE charted, so the bulk of volume is probably from untracked countries (Pakistan, Bangladesh, Egypt, Iraq, etc.); unverified.

- Whether the ratings came from prompts or were bought cannot be told apart.

- How much revenue comes from IAP versus ads, and whether it is profitable, is unknown.

- AppBrain says the developer is "active since 2018, 8 apps, about 3M installs". This comes from a search snippet; the original page was not opened to verify (the page refused scraping).
