Watch dramas, earn $100, then it stops at 99.64: CashDrama, 35 days, 500K installs, and it doesn't rely on dramas
What it is: an app where you watch short dramas and watch ads to build a balance, and once the balance reaches $100 you can withdraw. There are no in-app purchases; ads are the only revenue.
Why it took off: it sat unnoticed for six weeks. Starting in October, it began running ads in cheap-install countries like Vietnam, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and South Africa. A progress bar that "almost reaches the payout" keeps users watching rewarded videos one after another. It also shares a name with an older app that has more than 1,700 million installs.
DHow to follow it Don't copy the playbook; what's worth learning is the rhythm: let a new build sit for a few weeks before splitting the budget across tiers, aim for the top ranks in countries where the category chart is easier to crack, and ask for a rating right after users get value, in a real free app where the reward actually pays out. 20

A "watch dramas, earn cash" app that got almost no downloads in six weeks. Starting in October 1, it began buying ads and reached roughly 500K installs in 35 days, climbing to the top 20 of the Vietnam, Saudi Arabia, and UAE entertainment free charts. It has no original content and no in-app purchases, and it shares a template with a series of cloned sister apps. The money comes from the stream of rewarded ads users watch because they're "almost at the payout." The playbook is clear, but the path is crowded, has been called out by the media, and sits on the edge of platform policy.
A 113-person-upvoted one-star review
In 2026 October 19, a user named Herman Du Preez left a review of CashDrama on Google Play: "Pure waste of time! I watched ad after ad, and the rewards were zero cents… no matter how long you play, you'll never see a single cent." By November 6,113 people had marked it helpful (Google Play South Africa store page, 11-06).
The day before, another user was more specific: "As you get to 90, the rewards get slower and smaller, and by 99.64 they stop entirely and give you zero." In October 10, a user with a Kenyan name said: "When you get close to $100, your account balance simply stops going up."
These three reviews sum up the app: there's a progress bar that's almost full, the threshold is $100, every reward requires watching an ad first, and the last few cents never arrive.
What it is
The first line of the store page reads "Bored with your routine? CashDrama brings you captivating short entertainment with genuine cash payouts, completely FREE!" followed by "No tricks, no membership fees, no surprises." Once you open it, you get vertical short dramas. Watch them, tap "double reward" to build your balance, and once you reach the threshold you can withdraw. That's the promise.
It's labeled "contains ads" with no in-app purchases (Google Play, 11-06). The developer is Guicheng Limited (貴誠有限公司), registered in Hong Kong in 2026 April 10, with an address in an industrial building in Kwun Tong, a Gmail contact address, and a Netlify auto-generated subdomain, playful-creponne-bb3b33.netlify.app. This is its only app.
How it grew: sit for six weeks, then open the floodgates
| Date | Total installs |
|---|---|
| 08-19 | Launched |
| 09-29 | About 2,400 |
| 10-04 | About 42k |
| 10-22 | About 294k |
| 11-05 | 502k |
(Google Play installs; before 10-29 are third-party estimates)
For six weeks after launch it got only a few dozen installs a day. Starting in October 1, it suddenly took off and reached nearly 40K in three days. The curve since then has come in steps: on 10-31 it added +47K in a day, on 11-02 +72K, and on 11-05 +45K, with zero-install days in between (Google Play daily installs). Organic word of mouth doesn't produce that shape. It looks like batches of budget being spent (an inference, and a strong one).
The charts show where the spend went: 11-06 it ranks #13 on Vietnam's entertainment free chart, #19 in Saudi Arabia, #20 in the UAE, #54 in South Africa, and #67 in Thailand. A week earlier those positions were #61–#98. What these countries have in common is that installs are cheap (Vietnam, South Africa) or ads sell at a premium (Saudi Arabia, UAE), and "earn money by watching videos" appeals to users there. Many of the negative reviewers also have names from South Africa and Kenya.
We couldn't find its own ad creatives. Similar schemes offer indirect evidence: VnExpress reported in October 20 that a 25-year-old woman in Ho Chi Minh City saw a Facebook ad in September for a similar app called CoinDrama. Within seconds of opening it she got "you've earned 250K Vietnamese dong," with a withdrawal threshold of 500K. Thai PBS reported in February on TikTok accounts pushing "earn 500 baht a day watching dramas" to drive traffic.
Beyond paid ads, there are two other moves:
- Name collision. A same-named CashDrama (a different developer, around 17.8 million installs, mentioned by Thai media in February) was already on Google Play. Searching "cash drama" returns both, so the new app picks up some brand-name search traffic. How much is unverified.
- Suspiciously clean ratings. Of 3,021 ratings, 2-star and 3-star reviews are all 0, and until late October even 1-star reviews were 0. Only 4-star and 5-star reviews appear, and from November about 600 1-star reviews show up. This pattern looks like a rating prompt that fires at the moment a reward is paid out (inference). Users who later discover they can't withdraw come back and give 1 stars. The overall score stays at 4.1, so ad conversion doesn't drop.
Searching its name on TikTok turns up no promo videos from the app itself, and nobody has mentioned it on X in 60 days (11-06). It has no organic spread at all.
Where the money comes from
Users think they're earning money, but they're really watching ads for the developer. Each "double reward" is a rewarded video. The ads Thai PBS captured were for loan apps, games, and shopping. The threshold is set at $100 (1,400 baht in the Thai version, 500K dong in the Vietnamese one). A big bonus is given at the start, and rewards shrink as you approach the threshold, so users sit through dozens of ads before reaching it. Saudi Arabia and the UAE pay high ad rates, Vietnam and South Africa have cheap installs, and the two together cover the cost, which is why it keeps spending (inference; we didn't see specific ad rates).
VnExpress points out that AdMob explicitly bans the "watch ads, get paid directly" model. That also explains the next section.
It's not one app, it's a whole family of apps
Put its store description next to other apps' and the same sentence pattern repeats: "Bored with your routine? / Ready for a fresh entertainment experience? / Searching for the perfect entertainment fix? … with genuine cash payouts, and it's 100% FREE! 🎬" At least these apps use the same template (Google Play, 11-06):
| App | Launched | Installs | Developer |
|---|---|---|---|
| CoinShort | 2026-04 | 3.61M | HUIZHOU TAITAN JINSHU LIMITED |
| HotShort | 2026-04 | 2.69M | Ji Teng Yuan Limited |
| HotDrama | 2026-04 | 2.14M | Goldrich Motor Store Limited |
| HotReels | 2026-04 | 1.33M | Lisboa Trading Limited |
| SnapShort | 2026-03 | 610k | Dongtong Co., Limited |
| ReelCoin | 2026-04 | 300k | Gam Do Co., Limited |
| ReelEarn | 2026-07 | 190k | Kam Hung Development Limited |
| CashDrama | 2026-08 | 500k | Guicheng Limited |
Each one is registered under a different Hong Kong company, and the official sites are Netlify subdomains of the form "adjective-dessert-6-digit code" (dreamy-eclair, courageous-flan, calm-vacherin...). Each has only 1, 4 or 5 stars and no in-app purchases. Most package names are mini-game names (piratemaze, harvesthopper, tinyfishmaze), which suggests they got approved as mini-games first and were then swapped for short-drama apps. That they come from the same operator is an inference: the templates and structure are identical, but there is no direct corporate link. CashDrama is the latest and most blatantly named of the batch (com.xj.cash.drama).
One package gets banned, the next one goes up. One package hits hundreds of thousands or millions, and a new one opens. CashDrama itself is a copycat.
Who it's competing with
This category is extremely crowded on Google Play in 2026, in three tiers:
- The top of the same playbook: Coin Drama has about 17.9M installs, +7M in the last 1.18 days, and ranks #2 in UAE Entertainment. The older same-name package CashDrama has 17.8M, LuckyDrama 15.6M, LuckyDramas 14.2M, ClipCash 7.94M. There are dozens of packages named "Drama + Cash / Coin / Lucky / Reward" (Google Play, 11-06).
- Another batch of short-drama shells from a Vietnamese team, concentrated at the end of August, also buying user acquisition.
- Legitimate players: ReelShort and DramaBox each have 300M+ installs, and ByteDance's Melolo has 147M. TikTok itself launched PineDrama (84M installs), which also pays out coins. These have licensed content, and their rewards can actually be cashed out.
The category is also already famous, for the wrong reasons: Thai PBS (February) and VnExpress (October) both reported it as a scam, police have issued warnings, and YouTube is full of "is CashDrama legit?" and "how to report it" videos.
If it were you
D: Worth understanding, not worth copying. It grew through distribution craft (networks of sock-puppet apps, opening the floodgates after a dormant period, targeting low-bar countries to climb charts, controlling ratings), not through the product. If you copy that, you're entering a category of dozens of competitors, named by the media and police, that makes money by not paying out.
Who it suits: teams already doing overseas paid acquisition who have experience monetizing rewarded video, reading this as a breakdown of a rival's playbook.
Who it doesn't suit: anyone who wants a product that lasts. Promising cash without paying it violates AdMob and Google Play policies, and is consumer fraud in many countries. A banned account also takes the whole backend down with it. If you want a "pays out for real" version, you'd be competing with TikTok Lite and PineDrama on licensed content and payout ability, which a small team can't match.
How to do it (the transferable parts): learn the rhythm, not the tricks. Let a new package sit for a few weeks before putting budget behind it, then scale in steps every 2–3 days. Push into the top 20 in low-bar entertainment charts in countries like Vietnam, Saudi Arabia and the UAE to win chart position and organic installs. Put the rating prompt at the moment users have just gotten value. All three hold for any legitimate free app. The "progress bar + rewarded video" retention hook also works, provided the reward is small and real and can be cashed out (coins for premium or power-ups, not $100).
How to acquire users: volume for apps like this comes from Facebook and TikTok ads, and the creative is a promise that "watching dramas earns money." A legitimate version would need a hook based on the show itself, and the unit economics would be very different (inference).
When it was before: there is no window to catch. The best timing for this wave was the batch that launched in spring 2026, and the leaders now have tens of millions of installs.
What would show you misread it: (1) CashDrama and its sibling packages are not taken down over the next month or two, and new packages with the same template keep appearing and climbing to hundreds of thousands. That would mean enforcement is loose and this gray business lasts longer than expected. (2) A genuinely payout-capable, positively reviewed "watch dramas, earn cash" app reaches a million installs in Southeast Asia or the Middle East, which would mean there's room for a legitimate version. (3) The opposite: if its 1-star rating keeps climbing sharply after November while installs stall around 500k, this batch of shells has run its course and the next one needs a new name.

The countries where it charts and the users who leave bad reviews (South Africa, Kenya) match. VnExpress reported Facebook ads for the same category, and Thai PBS reported TikTok traffic. This app's own creatives were not found in the Meta/TikTok libraries.

Why CashDrama (com.xj.cash.drama, Guicheng Limited) was able to take off
Bottom line: this isn't a product that grew on its own. It's a rewarded-ad cash-out app built to farm short-drama viewers. It shares its copy template with at least 6 sibling apps, all from different Hong Kong shell companies, with Netlify random-subdomain websites. They're one matrix. It barely got any installs for 6 weeks after launch, then started paid acquisition in Oct 1. Every 2–3 days it pulls 1–70K installs in cheap-ad markets that are sensitive to "watch dramas, earn cash": Vietnam, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, South Africa. The money comes from rewarded video ads. The app shows a progress bar that says your balance is close to $100 / 1400 Thai baht, which pushes users to keep tapping "double reward" and watch ads. The withdrawal threshold is almost never reachable. The name also collides with an older app with 17.8M installs, "CashDrama" (com.Cash.Drama), which Thai and Vietnamese media have already named, so it picks up brand-name search traffic.

From 10-01 to 11-05, about 500k installs came in over 35 days, averaging about 14k a day. The growth comes in bursts (+3–50k on some days, a few dozen the next), typical of budget-based batch buying rather than an organic curve. The rating adds a steady +75~150 per day.
2. Competitors: who else is doing the same thing
"Watch short dramas, earn cash" was, in 2026, a extremely crowded category on Google Play that the media had already named. It breaks into three tiers:
A. Sibling packages from the same operator (identical copy templates, Hong Kong shell companies, random Netlify subdomains, disguised package names)
| App | Bundle ID | Developer | Launched | Installs | 7-day gain |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| SnapShort | com.stellar.stellarglide | Dongtong Co., Limited | 2026-03-25 | 608k | 38k |

| CashDrama | com.xj.cash.drama | Guicheng Limited | 2026-08-19 | 502k | 165k |
Evidence: the descriptions all use the same pattern ("Bored with your routine? / Ready for a fresh entertainment experience? / Searching for the perfect entertainment fix? … brings you … with genuine cash payouts/rewards, and it's 100% FREE! 🎬 No subscriptions / no membership fees…"). The developer sites are all auto-generated Netlify subdomains in the form "adjective-dessert-6-digit hex" (dreamy-eclair-788887, courageous-flan-49862f, courageous-semifreddo-d965f1, preeminent-concha-d151e7, calm-vacherin-279320, zippy-treacle-b9762f, playful-creponne-bb3b33). The rating histograms are unusually concentrated on 1★/4★/5★, with only single digits to two dozen written reviews. None have in-app purchases; they rely on ads (googleplay library app / app_snap). Most package names are game names (piratemaze, harvesthopper, tinyfishmaze, sunriseskywaysnake), following the disguise-then-reskin approach where a mini-game gets approved and is then swapped for a short-drama app. CashDrama's package name is simply cash.drama, the latest and most blatant of the batch. Another package on the same template is ReelEarn (com.pixeltaprush, Kam Hung Development Limited, hilarious-salamander-5ed4f2.netlify.app, launched in July, 190k installs).
B. Watch-to-earn packages from other operators

(googleplay library app_profile, 11-06)
C. Legitimate short-drama platforms and big companies: ReelShort (307M), DramaBox (307M), Melolo (147M, ByteDance), FreeReels (246M), TikTok's PineDrama (84M, launched 2025-12, also pays out coin rewards; Business Insider reported its launch in the US and Brazil 2026-01), and TikTok Lite / Kwai's watch-video-for-coins features. These have licensed content and rewards that can be cashed out, which CashDrama can't match on content or trust.
3. Growth levers: where users come from
- Paid acquisition (high confidence, but no specific creatives captured): 6 had near-zero growth for weeks, then took off in 10-01. Since then it has stepped up 1–70k every 2–3 days, which is the shape of a paid budget being turned on. The charted countries are low-CPI markets: Vietnam, Saudi Arabia, UAE, South Africa, Thailand, Indonesia. The most useful Play reviews are one-star complaints from users in South Africa and Kenya. There is circumstantial evidence for the acquisition channel: VnExpress (2026-10-20) reports Vietnamese users saw CoinDrama downloads in Facebook ads, and Thai PBS (2026-02-03) reports Thailand's version was pushed by TikTok accounts with "earn 500 baht a day watching dramas" videos. Our Meta ad library only finds advertisers via tool-category keywords and didn't index this package. The TikTok ad library only covers Europe and has nothing either. Its own ad creatives are unverified.
- Name piggybacking / store search: the name is identical to com.Cash.Drama, which has 17.8M installs and has been covered by media. Searching "cash drama" returns both (the first and second Jina search results are these two store pages), so it picks up brand-search traffic. How much it captures is unverified.
- Rating management: of the 3,021 ratings, 2★ and 3★ are both 0, and before late October 1★ was also 0 (4★ and 5★ at 345/1727 each). Around 11-01 about 600 1★ ratings appeared, while the Play page has very few written reviews. The same pattern repeats across sibling packages, which suggests the app prompts for a rating at an in-app reward moment (or nudges for five stars). People who were tricked then give 1★. The rating holds at 4.1, which matters for paid conversion.
- No organic spread: searching "CashDrama" on TikTok turns up no promo videos for it (TikHub, 11-06). The X corpus has 0 posts over 60 days (x-radar). YouTube has a batch of SEO videos titled things like "CashDrama scam? / how to withdraw / how to report," mostly pointing to the older package with the same name.
4. Why people stay and where the money comes from
- Users stay because they're "close to the withdrawal threshold": top-voted negative Play reviews (2026-10): "Watched one ad after another, the reward is 0 points" (111 people found it helpful); "The rewards get slower as you approach 90, and by 99.64 they stop" (25 people); "When you're close to 100 dollars the balance stops growing and you can't withdraw" (61 people). This matches what Thai PBS and VnExpress found when testing similar apps: a big balance is handed out at signup, the threshold is set at $100 / 1,400 baht / 500k dong, and the closer you get, the smaller the rewards.
- The money comes from rewarded video ads: each "double your reward" requires watching an ad, typically loan apps, games, or shopping (Thai PBS screenshots). Users think they're earning, but they're really delivering ad impressions to the developer. VnExpress notes that AdMob explicitly bans "watch an ad, get paid" mechanics, so these packages have short lifespans and keep swapping identities.
- Unit economics: Middle East ad eCPMs (Saudi Arabia, UAE) are high and CPIs in Vietnam and South Africa are low. A user who watches dozens of rewarded videos before hitting the threshold pays back quickly, which is why it can keep buying installs (inference; specific eCPMs not verified).
5. Differentiation
Barely any. Compared with its sibling apps it's just a new name, icon and bundle ID; next to Coin Drama and the similarly named CashDrama, it's the same gameplay. The only real "difference" is that it borrows the name CashDrama, which already has recognition in the category, and it's pushed into countries like Vietnam and the Middle East where the charts are easier to crack, which is how it hit the top 20 of the Entertainment Top Free chart. It worked because of distribution (a network of clone apps + paid acquisition + name piggybacking + rating management), not because of the product.
6. Visibility and copycats
- This particular package: almost no one knows about it. The developer has one app, no media or X discussion, and no public revenue.
- The category: widely discussed, and negatively. Thai PBS (2026-02) and VnExpress (2026-10-20) both reported it as a scam pattern, and police issued warnings. YouTube has lots of "legit or scam" videos.
- Copycats: it is itself a copycat. The same operator has at least 7 packages, and the category has dozens of "Drama + Cash/Coin/Lucky/Reward" packages on Play. A large batch of Vietnamese companies also pushes short-drama shells on Netlify domains (AuraReel, LumaReel, FlickReel, etc., concentrated in late August), also buying installs.
7. What to borrow
- "Dormant period, then open the tap": list the app and let accounts age for 6 weeks, then ramp budget in steps every 2–3 days. Once a package has run 500k, hand off to a new identity.
- Spread ban risk across several Hong Kong shell companies, random Netlify domains, and package IDs disguised as games.
- Target countries with low chart thresholds and reasonable ad rates (Vietnam, Saudi Arabia, UAE, South Africa) to climb category charts.
- Risk warning: this playbook violates AdMob and Google Play incentive policies, media and police are watching, and copying it is not advised. What's worth borrowing is the retention hook of "rewards + short drama," provided the rewards are actually paid out (PineDrama and TikTok Lite are the legitimate versions).
8. Still unclear
- The specific acquisition channels and creatives (Facebook / TikTok / Google UAC) were not captured. The target countries are inferred from charted countries and reviewers' nationalities.
- Attributing it to the same operator as the sibling packages is a strong inference (templates, domains, and structure all match), but there is no direct corporate-registry link.
- The share of search traffic from name piggybacking is unknown. Whether ratings were inflated or prompted in-app is unverified.
- Whether real withdrawals happen, and at what rate, is unverified.
