"Free $2,000 for new users" short-drama app: DramaPlay isn't selling shows, it's selling your home screen
What it is A free short-drama app filed under Tools, monetized by ads, with a launcher you're pushed to set as your default home screen.
Why it's blowing up Facebook ads promising "watch dramas, cash out to PayPal, $2,000 for new users" pull in older US users. Once inside, they're pushed to set it as their default home screen, and every home-screen visit becomes another ad impression. Turning ad spend on and off also makes it easy to climb a quiet Tools chart.
EHow you could follow Don't. What's worth taking is the structure: a content app plus a home screen or sidebar can multiply ad slots, and small categories are easy to chart in. That only works if the home screen is something users actually want and they turn it on by choice.

DramaPlay has been live for just over three months, with 1.29M installs on Google Play and #45 on the US Tools free chart. It doesn't win on good shows. It wins on two things: ads saying "watch dramas and earn, $2,000 for new users, straight to PayPal" that pull in older US users, and a requirement to set it as your default home screen. Without that, you can't watch anything, and once you've set it, every home-screen visit is another chance to show ads. Below: how the playbook moves, who's behind it, where the money comes from, and why you should stay away.
A one-star review with 239 likes
In 2026 Sep 13, a US user named Terry "Momma T" McNeil left a one-star review on DramaPlay's Google Play page:
As you can see, I've download this. But guess what? There's no $2000 treasure test. When you go in, nothing, not even a bonus.
(I downloaded it, as you can see. Guess what? There's no $2,000 chest. Nothing. Not even a reward.)
By Nov 6 the review had 239 likes, the most of any on this app. The reviews below it make the same point: "The $500 sign-up bonus for watching the first episode is a lie" (10-15); "The ad says no withdrawal minimum, cash out anytime, $500 sign-up bonus... none of it happened" (10-01); "My husband and I both downloaded it, and there's nowhere in the app to get money" (10-26); "The ad says the reward goes straight to your PayPal or Cash App, and the app never mentions it" (11-03).
The "$2,000 chest", "$500 sign-up bonus" and "direct cash-out" these users quote don't appear anywhere on the store page. The store description reads like a normal short-drama app: browse dramas by genre, and it remembers your watch progress. The last line says "We also offer an optional home-screen launcher and sidebar, which you can turn on anytime in Settings." It's filed under Tools, not Entertainment. It contains ads and no in-app purchases. The data safety section says "no data collected or shared" (Google Play store page, 11-06).
The promise lives in the ads, and the store page stays clean. This is standard for apps like this (inference).
The "optional" home screen is really the entry ticket
The store page says the home-screen launcher is optional. The reviews describe something else:
- "I can't get in unless I set it as my default home screen" (08-30,29 likes)
- "It wants to be my home screen. If I don't agree, I can't watch any video" (09-11,31 likes)
- "This app forces you to use its default home screen. There's no reason for that" (10-13,233 likes)
- "I refused to set it as default, so it used a popup to cover six-tenths of the video until I gave in" (10-19)
- "Every time I open another app, like my bank app, it pops up, and it only stops after a phone restart" (11-04)
Why make it the home screen? Because the home screen is the thing opened most on a phone. A drama-only app might get opened once or twice a day. A home screen gets passed every time someone presses Home. Add a sidebar and occasional popups, and ad impressions multiply. Many people probably leave it in place rather than go through changing the default back before they uninstall (inference).
Some people really do watch the shows. One user said, "I like the dramas and content, I just save 'diamonds' to trade for ad-free time" (31 likes). Others complained that "the ads are longer than the show" (75 likes) and "an ad every two minutes" (60 likes). What you can trade for in the app is ad-free time, not cash.
Install curve: on, off, on
1.29M cumulative installs, +7k over the last 135 days, 3,074 ratings, 4.06 stars (Google Play, 11-06). Launched in Jul 28; in Aug it was only 19k until 14k. Daily growth since then has jumped like this (third-party estimates):
| Timeline | Daily adds | Cumulative |
|---|---|---|
| end of August to 09-09 | 2–8k a day | — |
| 09-10 | +78k in one day | — |
| 09-17 to 09-25 | 3–46k per day | 577k (09-25) |
| From ¥09-26 | dropping back to about 6k a day | — |
| 10-04 | +118k in one day | — |
| 10-05 to 10-07 | under 1k in three days combined | — |
| 10-15 | — | Passed 1M |
| 10-29 to 11-06 | 0, 43k, 0, 0, 54k, 0, 19k, 19k | 1.16M → 1.29M |
Organic growth doesn't look like a sawtooth. This is what switching ad budgets on and off looks like (inference).
It has only appeared on free Tools charts: US #71 (10-29) → #45 (11-05), Philippines #53, Indonesia #49–74, South Africa #97, and outside the top 150 in Malaysia and Nigeria. It has never entered the overall chart. Putting it in Tools was deliberate: ~20,000 installs a day reaches #45 on the US Tools chart, while the same volume in Entertainment wouldn't crack the top 100 (inference).
The ratings are polarized too: 5 stars at 67%, 1 stars at 16%. Recent five-star reviews are mostly two- or three-word lines like "cool app", "Lovely", "still checking", which don't match the long one-star complaints. It looks like ratings are being solicited (inference).
Where users come from: "watch and earn" ads on Facebook
I couldn't get the ad creatives. What's clear is that dozens of reviews quote the same ad pitch: $2,000 new-user chest, $500 sign-up bonus, $100 download bonus, no-minimum cash-out to PayPal and Cash App. One review says the ads show an "ATM popping out like a cash register". A web search turns up a Facebook page named "Kellee Laureenbnw" (a fake name with random letters appended) that posted a "DramaPlay - Trending Dramas" Reel in Sep 23. It's gone now. The inference is that these pages were used to run Facebook ads.
The reviewers' names and tone ("Momma T", downloading with their husbands, asking whether it cashes out to Wells Fargo) point to older US Facebook users who tapped "watch videos to earn" ads (inference).
Beyond that, there's nothing. Searching "DramaPlay app" on TikTok returns only an unrelated Korean drama app with the same name. X has had zero mentions in two months. The only pages online are auto-generated listings on APK download sites.
Who's behind it: one template website, dozens of apps
The developer is ZhiXiang Cloud Trading Limited, with an address in Kwun Tong, Hong Kong, and a personal Gmail as the contact. Under that name there are two apps: DramaPlay, and a junk-cleaner called PureClean. PureClean launched in Jul 7 and has 1.29M installs, almost as many as DramaPlay, and its description also stuffs in a home-screen launcher. The site page.zhixiangcloud.top is a generic "developer studio" template that names no specific product.
Developers using the same website template (page.somedomain/index.html) account for 27 apps and 91.3M installs combined. Each "developer" typically ships one short-drama app plus one cleaner or utility. Whether these accounts are run by one company or by the same outsourced publishing vendor is unverified. Several accounts share an email, and one of the sites is in Chinese, under the name "复变科技". Two apps under one entity with nearly synced install counts and rise-and-fall timing suggests one budget pool being rotated across them (inference).
Who it's competing with
| Product | Scale (Google Play installs, 11-06) | How DramaPlay differs |
|---|---|---|
| Coin Drama | $17.9M, $7 daily + $1.18M | Same template site, but the "watch and cash out" pitch is built into the product |
| Dramivo - Reels & Shows | 8.77M, 7 day +275k | Same template, also ships a home-screen launcher, also in Tools, went live in June |
| Dramify - Reels & Drama | 3.97M | Same template, same entity also has a 5.95M cleaner app |
| CoinReel - Watch & Earn | 1.32M, 7 day +625k | Same template, launched Sep 20, "earn money" is in the app name, growing faster than DramaPlay |
| DramaNow - Watch Dramas | 522k | Same template, also buying US Tools chart placement, later and smaller |
| Muse Short-Drama Reel Launcher and others | 770k to 2.18M | "Short drama + home screen" written straight into the title |
| ReelShort, DramaBox, FreeReels | Tens of millions to hundreds of millions of installs | Licensed libraries, paid per episode or legitimately free |
DramaPlay didn't invent this playbook. It's copying it. Sibling apps on the same template that launched earlier and grew bigger are 7 to 14 times larger, and new ones keep coming.
Where the money comes from
Ad-only: it contains ads and no in-app purchases, so there's nothing to pay for inside the app. The math works because three things stack:
- Cheap acquisition. The "watch and earn" hook converts well with older US audiences, so each install costs little (inference).
- Lots of impressions. Home screen plus sidebar plus popups means a user sees far more ads than in a regular short-drama app.
- Some people actually watch. The shows keep a share of users around longer than a pure cleaner would, which adds usage time.
As long as the ad revenue a user generates over their lifetime slightly exceeds what it cost to acquire them, the spend can keep running. What each user is worth can't be seen from the outside.
If it were you
Verdict: E. Stay away. DramaPlay runs by promising older Americans cash that doesn't exist, then forcing them to hand over their home screen. Both directly hit Google Play's policies on deceptive behavior, intrusive ads, and launchers. The reviews already read "scam", "virus", "false advertisement". This isn't a gray area; it's false advertising. And the same template already runs over twenty apps, with bigger and older ones taking the lion's share.
Who it's for: No indie developer. The only people who could make this work are distribution teams with a stack of developer accounts, able to absorb whole-package takedowns and account-linked bans, and willing to carry the legal risk of false advertising. They won't need this article.
Who it's not for: Anyone building a product meant to stay in the store long-term, anyone without a multi-account setup who has a single developer account (one ban and it's all gone), and anyone who cares about their name.
How to apply it: What you can take is two structural lessons, not the app itself. First, "content app + home screen or sidebar" really can multiply sessions and ad slots. If you build a home screen people actually want (a large-text one for older users, a locked-down one for kids, say), the structure is legitimate, as long as users choose it and can turn it off anytime. Second, small categories chart easily: tens of thousands of installs a day in Tools can put you in the US top 50, and the same volume is invisible in Entertainment.
How to acquire users: Copying its method (fake cash promises) won't work. A legitimate "watch and get rewards" offer has to actually pay out and state its terms clearly. That changes the unit economics entirely, so you'd need to recalculate from scratch. Don't use its curve as a reference.
When was the window? There was none. This playbook has been in use since March with Coin Drama and was still shipping clones in September. The market is crowded, and the window depends on when Google cleans up, not when you enter.
What would mean I got it wrong: ① Three months later DramaPlay and its sibling packages are still listed and installs are still climbing, which would mean the platform tolerates this category more than expected and the business is steadier than it looks; ② Google Play mass-removes short-drama shells with desktop launchers, and then a genuine product that does "short dramas + compliant rewards" without deceiving users could fill the gap; ③ similar apps start stating reward rules on the store page, actually paying out withdrawals, and keeping normal ratings, which would show "watch dramas, earn money" can be a clean business worth re-running the numbers on.

Inferred points are marked "Inferred".
Bottom line
It didn't break out on product merit. It's an ad-arbitrage package built on "free short dramas + forced default-launcher setup + fake "watch-to-earn" ads": the ads promise "$2,000 new-user bonus / $500 sign-up bonus / cash out straight to PayPal or Cash App" to pull in mostly older US Facebook users. Once inside, there is no withdrawal entry, and you must set it as the default Launcher before you can watch anything. After that it pops up on the desktop and even when opening other apps, with dense ads carrying the economics. Behind it looks like a Chinese distribution matrix that registers developer accounts in bulk using one template website (page.<domain>/index.html): the library holds 27 packages totaling 91.3M installs, each "developer" typically runs one short-drama app plus one cleaner / utility, and DramaPlay is just one mid-sized package among them.
1. What it is

app_snap. - Version 1.0.4 (updated 2026-10-26); APK 1.0.3 is about 80 MB (indexed by apk.gold). For a short-drama shell that size, it's a safe bet they packed in several ad SDKs.
- Under the same developer name there are only two packages: DramaPlay and PureClean - Junk Cleaner (phone.fresh.pfpp, 2026-07-71.3M installs, 7 daily +255K, Nigeria Tools free chart #8, with the same launcher in its description). The website page.zhixiangcloud.top is a generic "Developer studio" template page (generated 2026-08-19) that names no specific product. AppBrain lists the developer as "3 apps, active since 2026".

Many recent five-star reviews are a few words like "cool app", "Lovely", ".very", "still checking", which don't match the negative text reviews (inferred rating nudging).
3. Why users come and what they see (review evidence)
Pulled the most useful and newest reviews from the us / ph / za / id stores, 291 in total (de-duplicated): 1-star 125, 5-star 117. Keyword counts: money 37, pay 26, ads 20, cash 13, virus 13, scam 11, withdraw 8, launcher 7, PayPal 5. Most representative (Google Play reviews, likes in parentheses):
- Ads promise cash: "There's no $2000 treasure test" (239); "I didn't get the $2,000.00 newbe reward like you advertised" (20); "they advertised no withdrawal THRESHOLD, cash out at any time… $500 sign on BONUS" (19); "there is a massive misleading advertisement… reward payments that goes straight to your PayPal cash app account, there is not one section that even suggests that there are rewards" (11-03); "there is not a free $100 for downloading" (11-03); "This app is fake… no 50 dollars" (40).
- Forced default launcher: "I can't proceed without setting this app as default launcher" (29); "it wants to be my launcher… you can't get past it to watch any of the videos" (31); "This app makes u use their default launcher… there's absolutely no reason for that" (232); "it rearranged all my apps on my home screen" (61).
- Pops up outside the app (suspected out-of-app ads): "every time I clicked on a different app, like my banking app this app would come up. I couldn't get it to stop coming up until I restarted my phone!" (11-04); "keeps popping up" (11-04); several reviews say antivirus flagged it after install (Google marked it as a virus, etc.; not verified).
- Ad density: "the ads are longer than the episodes" (75); "you get an advert every couple of minutes" (60).
- Some people really do watch the shows: "I do like the Dramas & Content… I just work on Earning 'Diamonds' for Uninterrupted 'Ad FREE' time segments" (31). Inside the app, users earn "diamonds" to buy ad-free time, not cash out.
- User profile: reviewers' names are mostly older US women (Julie Wise, "Momma T", etc.), matching the audience for Facebook money-making ads (inferred). Indonesian reviews likewise complain that "coins can't be cashed out and the splash ads never stop".
4. Competitors
The same space (free short dramas): paid short-drama apps like ReelShort, DramaBox and ShortMax (1–300M installs each), free ones like FreeReels, Melolo and PineDrama on TikTok (tens of millions to hundreds of millions), plus hundreds of IAA free-drama clone apps since 2026 H2 (this directory already has dozens of reports). DramaPlay is tiny in the mix.
Closer rivals: short-drama packs placed in Tools, with a Launcher or an "earn money" hook (googleplay library app_profile, 2026-11-06):
| Name | Developer | Launched | Scale | Relation to DramaPlay / how it differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dramivo - Reels & Shows | Smart Net Tools Studio | 2026-06-08 | 8.77M, 7-day +275k, #31 in Tools in Indonesia | Same website template (page.smart-net-tools.top), description also pushes the launcher; the top app of the same playbook |
| Dramify - Reels & Drama | Nitrogen Cloudless | Unknown | 3.97M, 7 day +93k | Same template (page.lumi-reels.tech); the same entity also runs CleanMax with 5.95M |
| DramaNow - Watch Dramas | Veyro Digital | 2026-08-24 | 522k, 7-day +94k, Tools in the US 124 | Same template (page.veyro-digital.top), also buying US Tools charts; 12/60 reviews mention money |
| CoinReel - Watch & Earn | ByteMind Studio | 2026-09-20 | 1.32M, 7-day +625k, #2 in Tools in South Africa | Same template (page.fubian.tech, Fubian Technology), writes "earn money" right into the name |
| Coin Drama | Tera Link | 2026-03-17 | 17.9M, 7-day +1.18M, #2 in Entertainment in the UAE | Same template (page.ai-trainer.work); the flagship that openly does "watch dramas, cash out" (see ios_6801006288 report) |
| TeraTV - Short Drama & Reels | Flextech Inc. | 2026-09-02 | 5.21M | Also in Tools, but monetized with in-app purchases ($1.99–$399.99), not ads |
| ACE Player & Drama home / DramaNow(Phoenix Nirvana) | Different entities | 2025 | 5.07M / 2.52M | An earlier Tools-category short-drama shell |
| Muse Short-Drama Reel Launcher / MiniSeries Home / Vidrama: Short Dramas Launcher | ArgonIsBlue / UtooTime / Derap Kreasi Persada | 2025–2026 | 2.18M / 1.4M / 770k | Puts "short drama + Launcher" straight in the title, sits in Personalization / Entertainment; DramaPlay hides the launcher as an "optional" line in the description |
| Lucky Drama - Shorts & Rewards | Digitnesia | 2026-07-07 | 2.24M | Openly rewards watching dramas (Similarweb lists DramaPlay as a similar app) |
| big tech | Google / Samsung / Xiaomi launchers | — | — | System home screens; the big short-drama companies don't touch launchers |
Bottom line: "short drama + Launcher" and "short drama + earn money" are not its invention. The same-template matrix has sibling apps 7–14 times bigger than it.
5. Where users came from (growth tactics)
- "Watch dramas, earn money" baiting ads (strongly supported by reviews, channel not directly confirmed): dozens of reviews cite specific ad promises ($2,000 treasure / newbie reward, $500 sign-on bonus, $100, $50, no cash-out threshold, straight to PayPal / Cash App), yet the app has no cash-out entry at all. A web search turned up a Facebook profile "Kellee Laureenbnw" (id 61594270280243, fake name + random suffix) that posted the DramaPlay - Trending Dramas Reels (now gone) on 2026-09-23. We infer a fake-persona Page ran the Reels ad. Our metaads / googleads libraries show nothing for it (both only track a fixed list, so no hit doesn't mean no spend).
- Spend pulses: install curves show waves on 09-10, 09-17~25, 10-04, 10-08~09, 10-13, 10-21, with gaps of about 0 between waves, matching budget on/off (inferred).
- Category positioning: placed in Tools rather than Entertainment. The US Tools free chart ranks you at #45 with 20k installs a day, while the same volume wouldn't crack the top 100 in Entertainment (inferred from entertainment-chart thresholds in other reports in this directory). It may also make the "Launcher / sidebar" features look natural to reviewers.
- Name piggybacking (weak): another K-drama app called "DramaPlay" exists on Play and TikTok (com.dramaplay.asiandrama, with TikTok @dramaplay_asiandrama and a Facebook page). Whether the overlap is deliberate is unverified; searching "DramaPlay" mixes them up.
- Rating solicitation (inferred): dense five-star reviews with empty content, with 1 one-star reviews concentrated on "scam", while the average holds at 4.0–4.2.
- Creators / social: none. A TikHub search for "DramaPlay app" only found a different app with the same name; x-radar shows 0 posts in 60 days; online there are only auto-generated pages on APKPure, Aptoide, AppBrain, apk.gold, and the like.
6. Why it works (where the money comes back from)
- The hook is not the drama, it's the money: US lower-income audiences click "watch videos, earn money" ads at high rates and at low CPI. The promise lives in the ad, not the store page; the store page keeps a clean "short drama app" description, which lowers review risk (inferred).
- The Launcher turns one-time, deceived users into ongoing ad impressions: you can't watch the dramas without setting it as the default home screen; once set, every Home press is a session, plus the sidebar and pop-ups, and you have to switch back to a different launcher before uninstalling. Ad eCPM × sessions pays for the paid acquisition. Ad-supported, no in-app purchases, so revenue comes only from ads.
- The drama content gives people a reason to stay: some users really do watch (diamonds buy ad-free slots), which gives it longer usage time than a pure cleaner tool would have.
- Spreading risk across a matrix: 27 apps on the same template, under a dozen "developer" names, so one account getting banned doesn't take the others down. One entity runs a drama app + a cleaner (DramaPlay and PureClean have nearly identical install counts, both 1.29M, and their growth moves in sync), suggesting one budget pool rotated across apps (inferred).
7. Differentiation
- Against legit short-drama apps (ReelShort, FreeReels, etc.): it has no content and no paywall. The difference is "ads promising cash + forced home screen". That is a difference in monetization and acquisition structure, and a negative experience for users.
- Against sibling apps in the same matrix: almost no difference, just a US-targeted spend and a "cleaner" name (no Coin / Earn).
- So the differentiation is why it ran, but it lives in the "baiting acquisition + Launcher retention" structure, not in the product experience. And that structure has been copied more than a dozen times inside the matrix.
8. Visibility and copycats
- Few people know about it yet: no public revenue figures, and no media, X posts, or creators have written about it; the "watch dramas, earn money" category only gets discussed as a scam on Reddit r/ScamCenter, Facebook anti-fraud posts, VnExpress, and similar places.
- Followers: it is itself a follower. Within the same-template matrix, Dramivo (June) and Coin Drama (March) came earlier and are bigger; DramaNow (Veyro, 08-24) and CoinReel (09-20) are newer apps running the same playbook.
9. What others can learn
- "Tool / content app + Launcher" can multiply sessions and ad slots several times over. For ad-monetized apps, it's a structural way to lift LTV. Pick low-barrier categories like Tools to win chart slots.
- Pairing a drama app and a cleaner under one entity, and batch-registering developer accounts through one website template, is a way to spread ban risk.
- Parts not worth copying: fake cash promises in ads, forced default home screen, and pop-ups on exit all run straight into Google Play's deceptive behavior, disruptive ads, and launcher policies. Reviews already widely report "virus" and "scam", so the whole app could be pulled at any time.
10. Uncertain
- I did not directly obtain the specific ad channels (Meta / Google UAC / TikTok / ad networks) or the original ad creative; these are reverse-engineered from reviews. The Facebook Reels link is dead.
- Whether the 27 "page.<domain>/index.html" apps share one operator: there's a shared email ([email protected] is used both for ByteMind Studio's CleanSpark and SnapFun's Tile Trip, whose website is page.brain-lab.tech under Brainy Lab Studio), and page.fubian.tech is a Chinese-language site for Fubian Technology. But it could also be a shared publishing or account service provider. Unverified.
- Whether the app pops up on exit and gets flagged as malware is unverified (the user may be confusing it with another app). Not tested on a device.
- Ad eCPM and per-user return are unverified.
