Top app delisted a year ago, nobody filled the gap: XBPlayer launched with a name two letters off and hit 5k installs in 46 weeks
What it is A third-party Xbox streaming app: stream your own Xbox console or Microsoft cloud gaming to Android phones, tablets, and TVs. Free tier trades ads for play time; there's also a one-time purchase.
Why it took off After the leader XBPlay was pulled, the Play Store had no decent replacement for a year. It catches searches with a similar name, then catches web and AI search with "alternative" and troubleshooting articles in four languages. It's free to start, a lower bar than rivals that charge upfront.
CHow you could follow it Don't be the second follower in Xbox streaming. Copy the method instead: find a tool that just stopped updating, has hundreds of thousands of existing users, and has no one in the store filling it. Package the open-source implementation as an app that works out of the box, and pair it with multilingual replacement articles and an "ads for time + one-time purchase" model.

XBPlay, the biggest third-party Xbox streaming app on Android with about 980k installs, was announced by its author in 2025 September as discontinued. For the following year, Google Play had no decent replacement. In 2026 October 1, a small European team launched XBPlayer. The name differs by only two letters, the features copy XBPlay, the model switched to "watch ads for time, one-time purchase," and they published over four hundred pages of "XBPlay alternatives"-style articles on their website. 5 weeks later it had 46k installs and gained 22k over the last 7 days. Below is how it caught these users and whether you could do the same.
A farewell letter, and a year-long unmet need
On 2025 September 15, XBPlay's author posted an announcement on Steam titled "Ending Support": "After much thought, I've decided to stop maintaining XBPlay... The app will remain available until September 30, after which I will take it down." On Android, XBPlay had about 980k installs and 4.5 stars (AppBrain). It streamed your own Xbox console to your phone and also played Microsoft's cloud games, with iOS, Steam Deck, and desktop versions too.
After it came down, users had nowhere to go. Reddit threads like "Alternative for XBPlay?" ran from September 2025 through 2026. One clear post on r/xcloud read: "XBPlay hasn't been updated in months, Better xCloud won't sign in on Android, and the official Xbox app doesn't seem to support it..." People kept recommending the same two open-source projects, XStreaming and Better xCloud, both requiring you to grab an APK from GitHub and sideload it. The only thing left on the Play Store was XBXPlay, which costs about $6 upfront (47k installs).
In 2026 October 15, a Brazilian user wrote on XBPlayer's Play page: "I bought the lifetime version and I like it so far... but it lags while I play, and sometimes it suddenly drops me back to the app home screen. Good, but I can't give five stars yet." 25 people marked it helpful. The developer replied the same day in Portuguese, asking him to email his device model, app version, and when the disconnects happened. XBPlayer had only been live for two weeks at that point.
What it is
XBPlayer: Remote Play & Cloud, developed by Hetko Apps on a .eu domain, with no traceable team background. It's a third-party Xbox streaming client with two uses:
- Stream your own console: With remote play enabled on an Xbox One or Series X|S, play games from your console on a phone, tablet, or Android TV, at home or away.
- Play cloud games: No console needed. Use a Microsoft account with Game Pass to play Microsoft's cloud-hosted games directly.
What it offers beyond the official Xbox app and the xbox.com/play web version are the settings heavy players want: touch buttons you can drag, resize, and save as layouts; controller remapping and stick deadzone tuning; a choice of 720p / 1080p and bitrate limits; on-screen overlays for FPS, bitrate, and packet loss; and a network helper for setting up your router to stream your console from outside. XBPlay and the open-source projects mostly did these things before, so XBPlayer isn't inventing anything new here.
The monetization is the most interesting part. The Play listing is detailed: new users get 60 free minutes, and each rewarded ad watched adds 30 minutes. Saved time doesn't expire and is only deducted while streaming. When the balance reaches 0, the session you're in isn't cut off; it's topped up before the next one starts. No ads appear during gameplay. If you don't want ads, buy Premium: a one-time purchase, listed in-app at $3.49–10.49. A commenter asked whether buying it removes the time limit, and the developer replied yes, "but we can't control the limits Microsoft is about to add."
How big it is
| What to look at | Metric | Sources |
|---|---|---|
| Installs | 10-08 ~4,700 → 10-21 ~18k → 10-31 ~25k → 11-06 46,475 | Google Play, third-party estimate plus daily scrape |
| Last 7 days | +21,937, still accelerating | Same as above |
| Rating | 99 (10-31) → 156 (11-06), averaging about 4.2; 17 one-star reviews | Google Play |
| Charts | Only entered the Entertainment free charts in Argentina and Brazil, with a best rank of #94 (Argentina, 11-02). Brazil Entertainment Top Grossing chart: sat around #194–200 for a few days in early November | Google Play charts |
| Other channels | Also listed on Amazon Appstore. The website says a Steam Deck version is in testing and the iOS version is "coming soon" | xbplayer.stream |
The install curve has three jumps: around 10-14, from 10-20 to 10-23, and 11-02 (+9,200 in a single day). We couldn't find a cause for any of them. No related viral videos on TikTok, X, or YouTube, and no media coverage.
Making Brazil's Top Grossing chart means some people are really buying the one-time purchase, but the bar for #200 in Brazil Entertainment Top Grossing is low, so revenue is probably small (inference). The installs are cumulative worldwide; we can't tell how many come from Russian-speaking regions or other countries that didn't chart.
Where users come from
One: the name catches searches from existing users. XBPlayer and XBPlay differ by two letters, so people who search "xbplay" in the store easily find it. The website footer includes a line stating it's unaffiliated with XBPlay (a discontinued app). The name alone isn't enough: another app launched two weeks earlier, called "XBPlay (Cloud & Remote Stream)" outright, has only 173 installs. Users are looking for a working XBPlay replacement. The name only gets you seen; keeping them depends on the product.
Two: four hundred-plus pages of "alternative" articles in four languages. The sitemap for xbplayer.stream lists 108 pages each in English, Russian, Spanish, and Portuguese, and 6 each in German, Japanese, and Chinese, most published or updated between October 24 and November 6. The flagship article is "What can replace XBPlay?", which opens by quoting XBPlay's discontinuation notice. Other groups: comparisons with each rival (XBXPlay, Better xCloud, official Remote Play, Greenlight), per-game guides (Forza, Halo, Baldur's Gate 3, Fortnite), and troubleshooting for various errors. Each article has a "Summarize with ChatGPT / Claude" button, and download links carry source tags. The goal is for these pages to show up when someone searches "XBPlay alternative," whether on Google or in AI search.
Three: release the APK in Russian-speaking communities first. XBPlayer has an official thread on the Russian Android forum 4PDA. APK download sites carried an early version from September 28, a few days before the Play launch. Our inference is that they built a seed group of users and feedback in the Russian-speaking market before going to the store.
Four: possibly hit by Microsoft's billing changes (causality unverified). In October 21, Microsoft introduced hourly cloud gaming time packs in Brazil (10 hours for R$6.90), which lines up with the second jump. Another report says Microsoft began capping monthly cloud gaming hours from November. Streaming your own console isn't subject to that cap, which may push some people toward clients like XBPlayer. The "limits Microsoft is about to add" in the developer's reply above likely refers to this.
Who it's competing with
| Product | Scale | Compared with XBPlayer |
|---|---|---|
| XBPlay | Play ~980k installs, 2025-09-30 delisted | The one being replaced |
| XBXPlay | Play 47,177 installs, #9 in the US Tools paid chart | Paid upfront, console streaming only, no cloud gaming |
| Official Xbox app / xbox.com/play | Xbox app 154M installs | Free and official, but lacks button editing, controller remapping, and bitrate settings |
| Better xCloud | GitHub 1,803 / 490 star | Open source and free, but you sideload the APK, and Android has sign-in problems |
| XStreaming | GitHub 916 star | Free open-source native client, not on Play |
| Greenlight | GitHub 2,916 star | Desktop and Steam Deck only |
Feature-wise, none of them are lacking. What's missing is a free client on the Play Store that streams both consoles and cloud games and has full settings. XBPlayer was the first to fill that slot.
If it were you
C. That slot is already taken by XBPlayer, and it's still growing, so if you build a second one now you'd be behind it and XBXPlay. The whole thing also rests on Microsoft's unpublished interfaces. If Microsoft changes sign-in or Google delists the app, it could go to zero, and outsiders still can't say why XBPlay was discontinued. What's worth taking away is the method: wait for a leading tool with an existing user base to fall, then use a similar name and a set of "replacement" articles to catch its users.
- Best for: a small team of 1–2 people who can handle reverse engineering and protocols, are willing to keep chasing platform interface changes and fixing bugs long-term, and can write or mass-produce multilingual content.
- Not for: anyone wanting to be the second follower in Xbox streaming; anyone who can't commit to ongoing maintenance or panics when an interface gets blocked; anyone who only wants to build features and won't write hundreds of pages of articles.
- How to do it: Don't copy XBPlayer head-on. There are two angles. First, target the platforms and audiences XBPlayer hasn't covered yet: its iOS version isn't out, XBPlay used to have iOS and Steam versions, and those old users have nowhere to go now (check first that Apple's review will pass). Second, move the method to another category: watch AppBrain's delisting records, Steam's discontinuation notices, and Reddit threads asking "what to use now that X is broken." Look for tools with hundreds of thousands of installs that were discontinued six to twelve months ago and that nobody has picked up on Play. Then package an existing open-source implementation from GitHub into an app that works as soon as it's installed from the store.
- How to get users: Follow XBPlayer's sequence. Make the name easy for old users to find through search (but don't use the original name outright, and don't touch the trademark; 173's installs are an example of that). On the website, write "X alternatives" and a comparison page for each rival first, then write troubleshooting tutorials for the exact points where users get stuck, in at least English, Spanish, Portuguese and Russian. Before going to the store, post the APK on forums like 4PDA and collect feedback. Give free allowances based on playtime, use rewarded ads to top up the playtime, then sell a one-time purchase. This model works well in markets like Brazil and Argentina, where people are price-sensitive about subscriptions.
- When the window opens: The window to take over usually lasts about a year after the leader stops support. After that, old users either churn or get picked up by someone else. XBPlayer launched a full year after XBPlay was delisted, so these windows can stay open a long time, but whoever arrives first usually takes most of it.
- Signs you've read it wrong: ① The discontinued tool you found no longer has people asking for alternatives on Reddit, meaning the demand has scattered. ② A month after launch, searching the original product's name in the store still doesn't surface you, or it does but nobody installs. ③ Looking back at XBPlayer: if install growth clearly drops before year-end, or Microsoft or Google bans it, the ceiling and risks of this path are bigger than they look.

Why XBPlayer: Remote Play & Cloud (eu.hetko.xbplayer) got traction
Channel: Google Play | Developer: Hetko Apps ([email protected], website xbplayer.stream) | Store launch 2026-10-01 | Research date 2026-11-06
Bottom line
It filled a vacancy: the biggest third-party Xbox streaming client on Android, XBPlay (about 980k installs, free with in-app purchases, could stream both consoles and cloud games), was delisted after 2025-09-30 stopped support. For the next year, the only paid option left on Play was XBXPlay (47k installs). XBPlayer took an almost identical name, matched XBPlay's features (console streaming plus cloud gaming, touch controls, gamepad mapping), switched to a free model where you watch rewarded ads for playtime and buy Pro once, then used 4 languages with 108 SEO pages each to capture searches like "XBPlay alternatives." It reached 5k installs in 46 weeks. Growth came mainly from timing (demand left by the leader's exit) + intercepting store and web search. The product itself is a competent clone, not something new.
1. Data
- Install curve (googleplay library app_day_ext, AppstoreSpy estimates + our own collection): 10-08 4,748 → 10-14 7,516 → 10-17 10,392 → 10-21 18,126 → 10-23 22,466 → 10-29 24,538 → 11-01 28,937 → 11-02 38,134 → 11-05 43,762 → 11-06 46,475. Over the last 7 days, +21,937. There are three clear jumps: 10-14 (+1.9k/day), 10-20~23 (about +2–3k/day), and 11-02 (+9.2k in one day). The causes were not found (see "Uncertain").
- Ratings: 99 → 156 (10-31 to 11-06), average 4.2; histogram [17,0,17,17,104], with 17 one-star reviews. No review text was captured in the library.
- Charts (chart_rank): it only charted in the Entertainment category in the AR and BR stores. In AR, its best free rank was #94 (11-02); in BR, its best free rank was #114; in the BR Entertainment Top Grossing chart it sat between #194 and #200 (11-01 to 11-06, on several days). This shows Latin American paying users are real, but the volume is small.
- Install counts are cumulative worldwide. Contributions from the Russian-speaking community (4PDA) and other countries are not visible in the charts from our 30 stores.
- Versions: on APKPure, the 26.9.3 build is dated 2026-09-28, a few days before the store launch; current version 26.10.4. It is also listed on Amazon Appstore (B0HMJV9N7F). The website says the Steam Deck version is in beta and the iOS version is coming soon.
2. Competitors
| Product | Where | Launched | Scale | Differences from XBPlayer |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| XBPlay(Studio08) | Android/iOS/Steam/desktop | About 2022 | Play about 980k installs, 4.5 stars (AppBrain); 2025-09-15 announced it would stop support, delisted 9-30 (Steam notice; the Play page now reads 404) | The one it replaced. XBPlayer's features, name, and free-plus-paid structure were all built against it |
| XBXPlay(GF Frame / streamingdv) | Paid on Android | 2023-01-28 | 47,177 installs, 7 days +258, US tools Top Paid #9 (googleplay library) | Pay first, then use (about $6), promotes low-latency Remote Play and FSR. XBPlayer is free to use and can also stream cloud games |
| Official Xbox App / xbox.com/play web | big tech | — | Xbox app 154M installs | Free and official. XBPlayer advertises editable touch controls, gamepad mapping, adjustable bitrate and resolution, and a diagnostics overlay, none of which the official app offers (from XBPlayer's own comparison table) |
| Better xCloud(redphx) | Open source: userscript + Android APK | 2023 / 2024 | GitHub 1,803 / 490 star | Free, but not on Play, must be sideloaded; in 2026 people reported Android login problems on Reddit |
| XStreaming(Geocld) | Open source | 2024-06 | 916 star | Free, native rendering. Reddit users recommend it as an XBPlay alternative, but it's also not on Play |
| Greenlight(unknownskl) | Open source desktop/Steam Deck | 2021 | 2,916 star | For desktop and Deck only, no mobile |
| XBPlay (Cloud & Remote Stream)(The Overlord,com.xbplay.remoteplay) | Android | 2026-09-19 | 173 installs | A copycat that directly used XBPlay's original name, launched two weeks before XBPlayer, and barely took off |
Conclusion: this category has demand and mature open-source implementations, but after XBPlay's delisting, the native client on the Play store that is free, can stream cloud games, and is well made has been an empty slot.
3. Growth tactics
- Taking over demand left by XBPlay and intercepting its search (confirmed): the names XBPlayer and XBPlay differ by only two letters; the website footer explicitly says "not affiliated with XBPlay, an app that previously discontinued support"; there are "XBPlay alternatives / alternativas-ao-xbplay" articles in English, Portuguese, Spanish and Russian, each opening by citing XBPlay's discontinuation notice. Reddit r/xcloud still had threads like "what are the options now that XBPlay is broken" and "Alternative to Xbplay" 2026 years on; the demand was never captured.
- SEO/GEO content matrix (confirmed): the sitemap has 108 URLs each in en/ru/es/pt, and 6 each in de/ja/zh. Articles were published and updated mainly from 2026-10-24 to 11-06, covering specific games (Forza Horizon 5/6, Halo, BG3, Fortnite), various troubleshooting guides, and comparisons with each rival (Better xCloud, XBXPlay, official Remote Play, Greenlight). Each article carries a "Summarize with ChatGPT/Claude" button, and download links carry utm tags (utm_source=website). This is clearly a mass-content approach, and it also aims to be indexed by AI search.
- 4PDA Russian-speaking community goes first (found during recall; this time the 4PDA page was blocked by 403, and only the search snippet confirmed an official dedicated thread showtopic=1126635): use the APK to build an initial user base in Russian-speaking communities before going to Play.
- Organic distribution through APK download sites (confirmed): APKPure, APKTurbo, CNET Download and Softonic (including a Korean version) all list it.
- Ad buys, TikTok, X, media: none found. A TikHub search for "XBPlayer" returned no relevant videos; x-radar shows 60 posts in the last 0 days; no media coverage. The ad library only tracks products on its list, so not finding anything doesn't mean no ads were run.
- Possible platform tailwind (causality unverified): 2026-10-21 Microsoft launched Xbox Cloud Gaming prepaid time packs in Brazil (10 hours for R$6.90, tudocelular); separately, shattered.io reports Microsoft 2026-09-03 announced monthly cloud gaming time limits from November (Ultimate 15h / Premium 10h / Essential 5h). The former lines up with the jumps around 10-20~23; the latter may have pushed some users toward streaming their own console (XBPlayer's Remote Play has no time cap), but there is no direct evidence.
4. Why it took off
- The demand is there and nobody has taken it: XBPlay's 980k-install user base went a year without a serious Play alternative (AppBrain; Reddit alternative-seeking threads 2026 years on).
- Name and content captured search traffic: XBPlayer ≈ XBPlay; four languages 400 multi-page SEO, written specifically for "XBPlay alternative" queries. Meanwhile com.xbplay.remoteplay, which uses the original name directly, has only 173 installs. So riding the name isn't enough on its own; the product has to work, and the store page has to look solid too.
- Cheaper than XBXPlay: free mode unlocks every feature and gives you 60 minutes to start. Each rewarded ad you watch adds 30 minutes, the time never expires, and an ad won't interrupt the match you're in 0. Users can test quality and latency on their own device first, then buy Pro once ($3.49–10.49). XBXPlay makes you pay upfront.
- Paid validation in LatAm: it hit #194–200 on the BR Entertainment Top Grossing chart. Latin American users are receptive to small one-time purchases, and Microsoft is pushing pay-by-the-hour cloud gaming in Brazil at the same time.
5. Differentiation
For users, the differentiation comes down to three things. One: it's the only third-party native client you can install from the Play Store, free to use, that chains console and cloud streaming. Two: it has the settings advanced players want, including touch-control layout editing, controller mapping and deadzones, bitrate and resolution, and a diagnostic overlay. Three: its monetization, ad-for-time plus a one-time purchase. The features themselves are mostly things XBPlay and open-source projects already built, not new inventions. The main reason it took off is that after XBPlay shut down, it was the first to bring all of this to the Play Store and capture the search traffic. Product differentiation is secondary.
6. What to borrow
- Watch for events like a major tool going unmaintained or being pulled (AppBrain removal records, Reddit posts asking for alternatives). Then build multilingual SEO around close names plus "X alternatives" to catch the existing demand at scale.
- A utility app can turn its "free allowance" into a balance measured in time, top it up with rewarded ads, and sell a one-time unlock. Paired with the platform's own pay-by-the-hour billing, users find it easy to understand.
- First build seed users and feedback through communities like 4PDA using APK downloads, then go to the stores.
- Package the open-source implementations (Greenlight, XStreaming, Better xCloud) as a product on the Play Store that installs directly, with support and documentation.
7. Risks and unknowns
- It depends on streaming interfaces and login methods Microsoft has not made public, so it could break at any time or be pulled by Microsoft or Google. Why XBPlay stopped is disputed (one account says it was acquired by Microsoft; unverified).
- I couldn't find the source of the three jumps in 10-14, 10-20~23, and 11-02. Possible causes: Play recommendations, a YouTube or Telegram mention, spread in the Russian-speaking community, or AR/BR creators.
- I don't know how many installs come from Russia or other countries that didn't chart.
- I don't know its revenue scale. The threshold for 200 place on BR Top Grossing is low, so it doesn't indicate much revenue.
- I don't know the Hetko team's background (.eu domain, data on EU servers).
