One phone, one tripod, and it beats the €600 electronic dartboard scoring: DartsOn from a small Estonian team
What it is A dart scoring app. You prop your phone beside the board, the camera recognizes where each dart lands, and it scores automatically. No electronic board or camera ring costing hundreds of euros.
Why it took off In September Winmau loudly launched phone-camera scoring and brought the idea to the whole darts world. In that wave DartsOn was free in beta, ad-free, had the most features, and the most detailed multilingual support in Europe. It got recommended on Reddit and Facebook darts groups as "the free one."
CHow you could follow it Don't chase darts. Move the approach to another sport with expensive scoring hardware and no good phone solution yet (pool, archery, foosball, etc.): run a free tier on an on-device vision model, capture demand through that sport's communities and multilingual store search, and the window opens whenever a big brand launches something similar.

DartsOn is a dart scoring app. You prop your phone beside the board, and the camera plus an AI model running on the phone recognizes where each dart lands and scores automatically. The Android version only launched in August, yet by 11-06 it had roughly 20k installs and reached the top 80 of the free Sports charts in the Netherlands, Germany, UK, and France. It rode a wave: this September, darts major Winmau loudly launched its own phone-camera scoring and brought the idea to the whole darts world. DartsOn gave away the most for free and had the most features in that wave. But the space already has over a dozen players, and revenue is still small. Anyone following should copy its playbook, not try to fight it in darts.
"Was that dart T20 or T5?"
A German user left a five-star review of DartsOn on the App Store in 2026 Sep 2, titled "Genau was ich gebraucht habe" (Exactly what I needed): "For 25 euros a year, camera scoring this accurate is amazing. It really helps my practice, because I often can't tell which segment of the board I hit."
Anyone who plays darts at home knows the hassle: throw three darts, walk to the board, pull them out, do the math in your head, tap the score into the app, then walk back to the oche. A single 501 means entering scores like this a dozen times. When DartsOn shipped v2 in Jun 13, its official blog described the scene in detail: a few friends playing together, someone asks "wait, was that dart T20 or T5?", and the scoreboard ends up eating the whole night.
Before, skipping this step meant buying an electronic board or mounting a camera ring around the outside. Camera rings like the Scolia Home 2 FLEX start at €605 and require drilling. DartsOn's approach: place the phone at the side and slightly in front of the board, aim it once, and start playing.
What it is
A dart scoring and training app on both iOS and Android, developed by RSApps Nordics OÜ in Estonia. The company was registered in 2024, has two founders, and also has several small apps such as Padel watch scoring.
- Three ways to score: automatic camera scoring, voice callouts, and manual tapping. The model runs locally on the phone, works offline, and doesn't upload video.
- Accuracy: the official claim is over 97% for a single device. September's v2.7 added a "second phone as a secondary camera," which they say reaches over 99%. These are the vendor's own numbers; no third party has tested them. A wrong read can be fixed with one tap.
- Extras: X01, Cricket and other game modes, 16-level bot opponents, casting to TV (Chromecast, AirPlay), and highlight replays. Oct 23's v3.0 added online multiplayer and accounts.
- Pricing: free to download, no ads. Automatic scoring is still in beta with generous free games; the company says only a few free games will remain after beta. Membership is an in-app purchase; users report about €23–25 a year, and the Google Play in-app price is $1.99–$59.99.
How it got here, step by step
| Timeline | What happened |
|---|---|
| 2025-09 | Launched on iOS as a plain scoreboard |
| 2026-06-13 | v2 launched camera auto-scoring |
| 2026-07 | The official YouTube posted two demos, one with about 11k views |
| 2026-08-18 | Launched on Google Play; 8-20's v2.5 added iPad, rebuilt bots, and added Finnish, Hungarian, and Polish |
| 2026-09-03 | Winmau launched Autodarts Lens (phone-camera scoring) at IFA in Berlin |
| 2026-09-26 | v2.7: second camera, casting, replays |
| 2026-10-23 | v3.0: online multiplayer, accounts, new model; a Discord followed |
Early reviews were rough. A UK user in July gave one star: "It got 501 wrong 5 times in the first game." Another long-time UK user gave two stars: "Changed the scores five or six times in 7 games, nowhere near the auto-scoring app I used before." By 9 and October, reviews from France and Australia said "the camera scoring actually works," and the remaining complaints were battery drain and heat (a German iPhone 16 user said it cost 23% battery in 34 minutes). Four months, four major versions, accuracy tuned release by release.
How big it actually got
- Google Play: 11-06 total installs 19,965 times, +2,964 in the last 7 days, rating 4.83 (153 reviews).
- Install curve: in September it got only twenty to fifty installs a day. Third-party estimates show 10-06 going from about 1,400,10-13 to about 11,300, adding over 10k in a week; afterward it settled at roughly two to three hundred to nine hundred a day. Autodarts, Darteer, and Dartsmind did not jump at the same time, so this was DartsOn's own doing. I didn't find the cause. It could be store featuring, a surge in one country, a viral post, or just a jump in the estimate data.
- iOS: combined ratings across 11-06 countries exceed 1,100, with 398 in the UK, 214 in France, 172 in Germany. Best Top Grossing sports ranks: #23 in Czechia, #34 in Belgium, #37 in Germany and the Netherlands.
- Money: on Android it ranks #136–138 on the Sports Top Grossing chart in 10 countries, with small amounts (inferred). The website's claim of "over 100k players" is a self-reported figure across both platforms and can't be verified.
The growth came from the Netherlands, Germany, UK, France, Czechia, and Belgium, all core darts markets, which matches its localization work.
Where users come from
First, a big brand did the market education for it. After Winmau launched Autodarts Lens in September 3, a wave of YouTube reviews followed: Dartful's "GAME CHANGER" video had 25k views, and Crutchley Darts had 28k. "Phone auto-scoring" was seen by a lot of people for the first time, and some of those looking for alternatives found DartsOn. This is inferred from timing only.
Second, the "is there a free one" question from the darts community. In Reddit r/Darts threads on "best scoring app," someone wrote "DartsOn (dartson.app) is the best one," and another said "I use DartsOn. It works well. The premium pricing is absurd though." In the large Facebook group "Darts Advice, Tips, and Discussion," people keep asking "has anyone tried DartsOn for automatic scoring," and 8-13 reply said "DartsOn does a stellar job of reading the darts." Everyone else charges, while it's free during beta, so the answer to "best free auto-scoring app" is often DartsOn.
Three: store titles and multilingual sites localized per country. App Store titles are changed to local search terms: Germany "Dart Zähler Rechner", France "Compteur Fléchettes", Netherlands "Dart Teller Punten". The site has landing pages, rules pages and tutorials in 18 languages, and it ranks high when you search "darts auto-scoring phone camera" in English. Download links on the site carry source parameters, so they clearly track how many people each channel brings in.
Four: small reviews and an owned community. Penguin Darts 10-02 posted "I Tested The Darts On App So You Don't Have To", with 2,255 views. There's also the r/dartson subreddit and a Discord opened in October. The volume is small and can't explain the jump in the week of October.
Not found: no ads turned up in the Meta, TikTok (Europe) or Google ad libraries (incomplete, so this only means nothing was found). Nothing on TikTok search, and nobody mentioned it on X in the last 90 days.
Who it's competing with
The third-party comparison site dartsautoscoring.com counts 13 auto-scoring solutions that only need a tripod and a phone.
| Competitors | Scale (Google Play, 11-06) | How it differs from DartsOn |
|---|---|---|
| Dartsmind | 363k installs, 7-day +2,403; Sports Top Grossing Germany #11 | The veteran of phone-camera scoring, around for 2021 years, from £12.99/year |
| Winmau Autodarts(Lens) | 59,440 installs, 7-day +4,585; Sports Top Grossing UK #11 | A big brand that also sells a hardware camera ring; unlimited Lens use needs a subscription, and early bugs drew complaints |
| Darteer (Czech) | 19,126 installs, +2,609 in 7 days | Launched in July, same timing and size as DartsOn; sells on price, also offers dual cameras and online play |
| DartCounter | 2.58M installs; Sports Top Grossing UK #1 | The leader in manual scoring plus online play; auto-scoring requires external hardware |
| Scolia and other hardware rings | From 605 EUR | Accurate, but expensive, and requires drilling |
| NineDart Score, Dartroom, DartsSpace, Chalkboard Cam and others | A few thousand installs or not yet launched | Followers from the same wave, small |
It isn't the first (Dartsmind came 5 years earlier) and it isn't the biggest (Autodarts has the Winmau brand). Its position: in this wave, the small-team product that gives the most away for free, with the most complete features and the most detailed localization. Taken one by one, none of its features is exclusive: Dartsmind also uses on-device models with dual cameras, and Darteer also has online play. Once the beta ends and the free games are cut back, its biggest selling point will weaken.
If it were you
Verdict: don't enter darts. 13 phone solutions are competing, with Dartsmind and Winmau above them, and DartsOn's own revenue still ranks outside the top 130 on the Top Grossing chart. What's worth taking is its method: a feature that otherwise needs hundreds of euros of hardware, built for free with a phone camera and an on-device model, positioned in the community as "the free one" once the big brands have educated the demand.
Who it suits: a team of 1–3 people who can train and deploy on-device vision models, ideally people who play a sport that "has expensive scoring hardware but no good phone solution yet." Candidates to look at: pool, archery, foosball, cornhole, disc golf (inferred; I didn't check each category's emptiness individually). RSApps itself is building Padel scoring and may move in this direction too.
Who it doesn't suit: people who can't build vision models and want to get in by wrapping an existing app or by doing manual scoring (manual scoring apps already have plenty of established million-install players); people who want to compete with DartsOn and Darteer in darts on features or price; people who expect subscriptions to pay off quickly, since paid demand in these niche sports currently looks very small.
How to build it: pick a sport where someone already sells a hardware scoring system for over 300 euros, which shows people will pay to not keep score by hand. Build a phone version that works offline, lets you fix a misread throw in one tap, and casts to a TV. Keep it free with no ads at first and sharpen the accuracy (DartsOn got roasted in July for "wrong 5 times a game" and only turned into good reviews two months later). Sell memberships yearly at 20–25 euros a year.
How to get users: go to the biggest subreddit and Facebook groups for that sport and answer posts like "is there a free auto-scoring app"; write store titles as local search terms by country; use multilingual rules pages and tutorials on your site to capture search traffic; find small review channels with thousands to tens of thousands of subscribers and give them memberships. Watch the big brands in that sport: the moment one launches phone scoring, that's your window.
Deadline: don't go by the calendar, go by the big brands. Within six months after a leading maker in a sport launches phone scoring, you need a working free version already being recommended in the community. Building it after a dozen players have crowded in is how darts looks today.
What would show you misread the signal: ① after DartsOn's beta ends and it starts charging, Google Play installs drop by more than half each week, showing that "free" was its entire growth, and copying this in another sport would just burn money; ② RSApps or someone else has copied it in pool or archery for six months and installs are still under a few thousand, showing that demand in those sports can't support an app; ③ Apple, Google or a big company's general sports recognition gets built into the system camera.

Why DartsOn: Darts Scoreboard (eu.rsapps.darts) got this far
Channel: Google Play (also on iOS, id 6749278824) | Developer: RSApps Nordics OÜ (Estonia) | Research date 2026-11-06
One line
It's a darts scoring app that turns a phone camera and on-device AI into an "automatic scoring system", with no electronic board and no hundreds-of-euros camera ring. It took off by riding the wave of "phone-camera auto-scoring" in 2026: Winmau Autodarts Lens launched in 2026-09 and educated the whole darts scene about the idea. DartsOn has the most complete experience in this wave: free during the auto-scoring beta, no ads, offline, multi-camera support, casting to a TV, and localization into 18 languages. Users found it mainly through word of mouth in darts communities and YouTube reviews.
1. Core base and timeline
- Company: RSApps Nordics OÜ, registered in Estonia in 2024-04, founders Siarhei Haikou and Ragnar Rebase (dealroom, inforegister.ee). It also runs several small apps including PadelMix, PadelMax (Padel watch scoring), Bookrise and TrayTrack (rsapps.eu), making it a small, prolific studio.
- On iOS since 2025-09-21 (iTunes lookup); it started as a plain scoreboard.
- 2026-06-13 released v2, adding camera-based auto-scoring (blog). The official YouTube demo videos 2026-07-13 and 07-14 were published, with 2,940 and 10,922 views respectively (YouTube Data API).
- From 2026-08-18 to 08-20 it went live on Google Play (blog).
- 2026-08-20 released v2.5: rebuilt the robot opponent, added iPad support, and added Finnish / Hungarian / Polish interface languages (rsapps changelog).
- 2026-09-26 v2.7: supports a second phone as a side camera (officially lifts accuracy from 97%+ to 99%+), Chromecast casting, shot replay, and a new 121 Checkout mode (changelog).
- 2026-10-23 v3.0: launches online multiplayer (private rooms first), accounts with cloud sync, a new DON v30 model, and an AirPlay TV layout; also opened a Discord community (announced in a 10-29 blog post).
2. Growth data
- Google Play: as of 2026-11-06, 19,965 total installs, +7 over the last 2,964 days (googleplay library app_profile/app_day), rating 4.83 (153 reviews).
- Install curve (googleplay library app_day_ext, AppstoreSpy estimates): in September it had only 20–50 installs a day; cumulative installs jumped from about 10-06 to 1,427,10-13 around 11,324, adding roughly 10k in a week; afterward it settled back to 200–900 a day, and about 300 a day in early November. Over the same period Autodarts, Darteer, and Dartsmind had no comparable spike, so this one looks specific to DartsOn. Cause not found. It could be a Play featured slot, a regional push, or a community post or video, but this is unverified.
- Charts: on Play's SPORTS Top Free chart it ranked #52 in the Netherlands, #67 in Germany, #78 in the UK and France, and #114 in Australia; in 10 other countries it ranked 136–138 on the SPORTS Top Grossing chart (data card).
- iOS (appstore library, 2026-11-06): rating counts of UK 398, France 214, Germany 172, Australia 121, US 95, Netherlands 70, Sweden 51, adding up to more than 1,100. Best Sports Top Grossing category ranks: Czechia #23, Belgium #34, Germany and Netherlands #37, Slovakia #37. The UK added 7 ratings in the last 18 days and France 19, so iOS is growing steadily.
- The official site claims "Trusted by over 100,000 players" (dartson.app), a combined figure across both platforms; unverified.
3. Competitors
In 2026, "automatic scoring with the phone camera" attracted many entrants. The third-party comparison site dartsautoscoring.com counts 13 "just a tripod + phone" options, 6 of which limit the free tier (dartsautoscoring.com).
| Competitors | Form | Launched | Scale | How it differs from DartsOn |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dartsmind(Zaglab) | iOS / Android | 2021(Play) | Play 363k installs, +2,403 in 7 days; Play in-app purchases $6.99–$99.99; SPORTS Top Grossing Germany #11 | The veteran of phone-camera scoring, £12.99/year; the community considers it accurate, but some Reddit users complain the developer doesn't respond to feature requests. DartsOn came 5 years later and is catching up with a "free beta + more features + localization" pitch. |
| Winmau Autodarts(Lens) | iOS / Android + hardware | 2026-09-03 launched at IFA Berlin (BusinessWire) | Play 59,440 installs, 7-day +4,585; SPORTS Top Grossing UK #11 | A big brand with a hardware ecosystem (Autodarts X camera ring); Lens is just one part of it, and the Plus subscription unlocks unlimited Lens. Early reviews had many bug complaints (Facebook groups). DartsOn is software-only, offline, and lightweight. |
| Darteer (Czech) | iOS / Android | 2026-07(Play) | Play 19,126 installs, 7-day +2,609 | A direct rival of about the same size and launch timing, pitched on being cheap ("26p a month") with dual-camera and online multiplayer support. Roughly even with DartsOn. |
| DartCounter | iOS / Android | Long-established | Play 2.58M installs, SPORTS Top Grossing UK #1 | The leader in manual scoring and online multiplayer; automatic scoring requires an external camera (Target Omni, etc.), and the phone camera is not its core. |
| Hardware rings such as Scolia / Target Omni / Autodarts X | Hardware | Years | Scolia Home 2 FLEX from €605 | Costs hundreds of euros and requires drilling; DartsOn replaces it with €0 plus a tripod. |
| Manual scoring apps (Darts Scoreboard, My Dart Training, DARTS Scoreboard 2026, Darts Assistant, etc.) | Android | 2011–2023 | 890k–1.77M installs each | Manual input only; DartsOn puts manual, voice, and camera input in one app. |
| NineDart Score, Dartroom, Darts Score Handsfree, DartsSpace, Chalkboard Cam (Dart Starter), WiseDarts | Small indie-dev apps | Launched or announced between 2025-08 and 2026-10 | A few thousand installs on Play, or not yet launched | Followers in the same wave, all still small |
Verdict: it's not that there are no competitors, but that they're crowded together. DartsOn wasn't the first (Dartsmind came 5 years earlier) and isn't the biggest (Autodarts has the Winmau brand). Its position: within this wave, the most complete and most generous free-tier product from a small team.
4. Growth tactics (evidence)
- Category education paid for by a big player (timing): After Winmau's Autodarts Lens 2026-09-03 launched, a wave of YouTube reviews followed right away, e.g. Dartful's "Lens has landed… GAME CHANGER" with 25k views, Crutchley Darts 28k, Premier Darts 4,121 (YouTube Data API). "Phone camera auto-scoring" was suddenly seen by a lot of people for the first time, and as more people searched for "auto scoring app," DartsOn rode the demand. This part is inference: the timing lines up, but there's no direct evidence.
- Community word of mouth: in a Reddit r/Darts "Best Darts scoring apps" thread, someone said "DartsOn (dartson.app) is the best one"; in "All the Auto Scoring mobile Apps worth subscribing to," someone said "I use DartsOn. It works well. The premium pricing is absurd though" (Jina search snippets). In the large Facebook group "Darts Advice, Tips, and Discussion," people repeatedly ask and recommend it, e.g. a post by 2026-08-13: "DartsOn does a stellar job of reading the darts"; another said "free for 7 days then 22.99 for the year."
- YouTube reviews: Penguin Darts 2026-10-02 posted "I Tested The Darts On App So You Don't Have To" (2,255 views), and the official channel's two demos total about 14K views. Those numbers are too small to explain the October spike of 10K installs in one week.
- Localized store ASO + website SEO: App Store titles are changed per country to local search terms, e.g. German "DartsOn: Dart Zähler Rechner," French "Compteur Fléchettes," Dutch "Dart Teller Punten," Japanese "ダーツスコアボードとカウンター" (appstore library). The website dartson.app has landing pages, rules pages, and tutorials in 18 languages, and ranks high for English searches like "darts auto-scoring phone camera" (Jina search results). Official download links carry utm / ct parameters, suggesting they track conversions from the site.
- Owned community: there's an r/dartson subreddit; v3.0 opened a Discord (10-29), with a Discord entry placed directly in the app settings.
- Paid ads: no darts-related advertisers appear in the Meta ad library, nor in the TikTok ad library (Europe only); the Google ad library's tracking list shows Autodarts but not DartsOn. Our libraries aren't exhaustive, so we can only say "no evidence of paid acquisition found."
- TikTok / X: a TikHub search for "dartson" returns nothing, and x-radar shows 0 posts in the last 90 days.
5. Why it took off
- When demand ignited: in the second half of 2026, phone-camera scoring went from "just Dartsmind" to a whole category, and Winmau's high-profile IFA launch made demand jump. DartsOn had auto-scoring by June and Android by August, so it had its product ready before demand took off.
- Free, no ads: auto-scoring is in beta, free game allowance is generous (per the official statement cited by dartsautoscoring.com), and there are no ads. Among rivals, Dartsmind starts at £12.99/year and Autodarts requires a Plus subscription. For questions like "best free auto-scoring app," it naturally becomes the answer (the Facebook group question titles are exactly this).
- Fast updates, feature-packed: within 4 months it shipped v2 (auto-scoring), v2.5 (bots, iPad), v2.7 (multi-camera, casting, replay), and v3.0 (online multiplayer, accounts), plus 16-level human-like bots, voice input, and a range of practice modes. It has every point people compare in reviews and comment sections.
- European localization: the interface is in 18 languages, with store titles localized per country. Its growth is concentrated in dart core markets: the Netherlands, Germany, UK, France, Czechia, and Belgium, which matches the data.
- Good reputation: Play rating 4.83, iOS UK 4.67. The community rates its accuracy well; the main complaints are battery drain and pricing.
6. Differentiation, and whether that's why it took off
- Real differences: ① on-device model, works offline, no video uploaded; ② one phone is enough, and a second phone can be added as a side camera (99%+); ③ camera, voice, and manual input in one app, plus bots, practice, and online multiplayer; ④ free, no ads; ⑤ multilingual localization for Europe.
- Taken individually, none of these is exclusive: Dartsmind also does on-device scoring with dual cameras, Darteer has dual cameras and online multiplayer, and Autodarts has a free entry tier. Its edge is the combination plus price, not a technical moat.
- So differentiation is only part of the reason. The bigger factors are category timing (big players educated the market) and, in this wave, the most generous free tier and the most detailed localization. Once the beta ends and the free allowance tightens (the official line is that only a small number of free games will remain), that edge will weaken, and users are already saying the pricing is absurd.
7. Visibility
- Buzz within a small circle: discussion is limited to darts communities (Reddit r/Darts, Facebook darts groups, small YouTube review channels), and it's been listed on comparison sites like dartsautoscoring.com. No media coverage, no discussion on X, no public revenue (not on TrustMRR or similar platforms, and the founders haven't posted numbers).
- The niche is already crowded (13 phone-based options), but almost no one outside it knows about it.
8. Copycats
Not exactly copying DartsOn, but followers in the same wave: Darteer (2026-07), NineDart Score (2026-08), DartsSpace auto-scoring, Dart Starter's Chalkboard Cam (2026-10-18 announced), Dartroom, and Darts Score Handsfree (2025-08 added camera scoring).
9. Takeaways
- "Build for free, with a phone camera and on-device model, the features that hundreds of euros of hardware provides": applicable to niche sports with expensive gear (billiards, archery, table tennis, foosball, disc golf...). RSApps is already doing Padel scoring, and the same team could copy this playbook.
- Enter after big players have educated the market with a free, more complete alternative, and become the default answer to "is there a free X" questions in communities.
- Localize store titles per country with local search terms, build multilingual landing pages on the website, and capture long-tail traffic across several European markets at small-team cost.
- Dense updates, with changelogs written like product launches, keeping conversation going in communities and reviews.
10. Still unclear
- Between 10-07 and 10-13 Android gained about 10k installs in one week; cause not found (featured placement? a regional push? a viral post?). AppstoreSpy has only two observation points for that period, so it could also be a data jump.
- Conversion and revenue: Play in-app purchases $1.99–$59.99; iOS has 8 Premium tiers (€1.99–€29.99), annual fees roughly €22.99–24.99; ranking #136–138 on the Top Grossing chart in 10 countries, with very small amounts.
- Will charging after the beta hurt retention? Can they hold their ground between Autodarts and Dartsmind?
