> The US leader prices in USD and English, so its French-language card prices were off for French buyers. This one fills the gap by pulling Cardmarket prices by card language. It also rides the Pokémon 30 anniversary collecting wave. The founder works in the French-language community out in the open, and uses video posts with box prizes instead of paid acquisition.

# French cards should be priced at French card prices: a French-made Pokémon card valuation app hit $30k/month in six months

**What it is** Point your camera at a card and it identifies which card and what language it is, shows live prices for the European market, then logs all your cards and boxes into a portfolio that shows profit and loss.

**Why it took off** The US leader prices in dollars and English cards, so its numbers are off for French-language cards. PokéItem fills that gap by pulling Cardmarket prices according to the card's language. It also rode the Pokémon 30th-anniversary collecting wave, and the founder built in public in French-speaking communities, posting videos and giving away card boxes as prizes instead of buying ads.

**B** **How you could follow** Don't build another one for France. Pick a language market where no one has stuck yet (German, Italian, Spanish, Polish), or a collectible category where the big US player's pricing is off, value cards against local price sources, put the profit-and-loss curve behind the paywall, and acquire users through local card communities and video posts with prizes.

Grade B: the gap is real, willingness to pay has been proven, and acquisition costs almost nothing. But France already has three local products, it publishes its revenue and is expanding to 9 languages and international creators, and card scanning-for-price is commoditized, so followers will need a deeper local community than it has to win. PokéItem is an app that scans, values and tracks trading card collections (mainly Pokémon). It didn't invent a new feature; it just got right what the US leader couldn't be bothered to do: French cards are priced at what French cards sell for in the European market. Two people, no funding, almost no paid acquisition, and by October it was making $32k a month, ranking #5 in the French App Store's Reference paid chart, ahead of the US app Collectr. Below: how it got started, where the money comes from, and whether this gap exists elsewhere.

### A Reddit post

In 2026 May 21, a Frenchman named Hugo Tribet posted in the French Pokémon card subreddit r/PokemonTCGfr: "I'm building PokeItem, a French app... I've opened the beta." At the time the app had about 18,000 French-language cards, pulling live Cardmarket France prices, and he wrote: "I'm building it alone." The next day he posted a long thread from his old account, 0xPocho on X, titled "PokéItem: your Pokémon card collection finally has a value 🇫🇷".

Hugo isn't a card-game guy. He worked at Swiss crypto firm SwissBorg, ran a French crypto account on X that fans of 2,800 followed, and met his later CTO on Twitter. The company, SAS POKEITEM May, was registered in a small town near Toulouse called Pibrac.

Six months later, in Nov 6, TrustMRR showed RevenueCat-verified numbers: 30-day revenue of $30,375, up 35% on the previous 30 days; MRR of $18,297 from 2,924 active subscriptions, and $85,605 lifetime.

### What it is

Point your camera at a card and the app identifies the set, rarity, **language** , and even reads the labels and grades on PSA and CGC slabs. Then it gives you a price. The store page headline for this section is bold: "A reliable valuation, not made-up numbers." It uses the lowest listing price on Cardmarket for the same language in near-mint condition, recalculated daily, plus recent eBay sales and its own index.

Beyond single cards, it also tracks 13,000 kinds of sealed product (booster packs, Elite Trainer Boxes, displays, UPCs) as assets: enter your purchase price, see your profit or loss, and watch the value curve of your whole collection. The first line of the store page reads: "PokéItem turns your collection into a portfolio."

In the following months it added: fake-card verification polls (submit 8 photos, other collectors vote for 7 days), a no-commission buy/sell marketplace, trade matching, DMs, a Pokédex, iPhone and Android home-screen widgets, and One Piece, Riftbound, Yu-Gi-Oh!, and Dragon Ball support. One iOS review said "sixth update this month," another (10-26) said "you can see it getting better every week."

### Why this one: the US leader gets prices wrong in France

Card-valuation is a crowded niche, with dozens of "AI card scanner" apps worldwide. The biggest is America's Collectr: 69k ratings on the US App Store and 3.38M installs on Google Play. But Collectr is built around TCGplayer and dollars. European users only get Cardmarket's "trend price," which mixes all six languages and all conditions together. French site folio.fyi gave one example: the same card has a trend price of €757, while the lowest near-mint English listing is €1,600.

French players collect a lot of French-language cards, and French, English, and Japanese versions of a card have very different prices. For them, Collectr's numbers are unusable.

In Nov 6 on the French App Store reference chart, PokéItem ranked #5, the long-running French index PokéCardex #6, Cardzia #26, and Collectr #59. The most common iOS review line is about exactly this: "Tried a bunch of apps, for reliable prices nothing beats it" (10-26), "saves me from digging through eBay to find a card's price" (9-28), "as good as Collectr and Cardmarket" (9-25).

Timing was another factor. 2026 marks Pokémon's 30th anniversary, and collecting and "buying boxes as an investment" are hot in France. Hugo said on LinkedIn they "rode the 30 anniversary well": they posted content early, and new cards and boxes went into the app on release day.

### Where users come from: almost no ad spend

Hugo said on LinkedIn, in his words: they don't burn money on Meta, Google, or TikTok ads, they reward users instead. The visible channels:

- **The founder does it publicly.** He posts in French crypto circles on X and on LinkedIn, reporting user counts (30k → 40k → 45k), annual revenue, and App Store rankings. He also did a Discord AMA in a crypto community.

- **French card communities.** The Reddit beta post by May was the starting point.

- **Creator referral codes.** The French Pokémon YouTuber alexpkm has a personal link in his video descriptions, and the X card account Pokédiavenir 7-30 wrote in a recommendation: "made by an enthusiastic Frenchman." Whether or how much people paid through these links isn't visible from outside.

- **"Clipping": post videos, win prizes.** Starting Sep 23, users posted PokéItem content on X, TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube and earned season XP based on views (1 points per 10 views on X and TikTok), plus 10k points per friend referred. At season's end, prizes went to top rankers: a Mewtwo/Charizard UPC, ETBs, the 30th-anniversary box, memberships. 52 people won in season one. The customer acquisition cost turned into a few dozen card boxes.

- **Giveaways and offline events.** ETB giveaways on X, and a partnership with the livestream auction platform Voggt that gave away tickets to a card night at Paris Game Week.

The official TikTok account was small: 174 videos, 1,200 followers, around a thousand views per video (11-06).

### Where the money comes from: the paywall sits on "portfolio"

| Tier | Pricing | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Free | 0 | 1 games, 1,000 cards, 10 sealed products, 20 scans per month |
| Premium | €2.99/week, €5.99/month, €49.99/year, €159.99 lifetime | Unlimited collection tracking and scanning, full-page scanning, DMs, collection analytics, value curves |
| Premium+ | €4.99/week, €8.99/month, €79.99/year, €249.99 lifetime | Plus all games |

(list price on the official site, 11-06)

The real paid feature isn't "check a price." It's "show me what my cards are worth and how much I've made." Serious collectors pay once their collection passes 1,000 cards, or when they want a profit-and-loss curve. Japanese cards are also behind the paywall, and 10-07 users uninstalled over it. Some find it expensive (10-15: "a €10–12 one-time purchase would make sense, especially since it looks like it was built with Claude Code"). But monthly revenue rose from $2,664 in May to $20k in September and $32k in October, which shows French collectors are willing to pay.

The Google Play version only launched in Aug 14, with 11-06 total installs, 13,501 over the last 7 days, 1,194, and it hovers around #50 on the French Productivity top-grossing chart. The main battleground is iOS: 492 ratings in the French store, averaging 4.74 stars, adding about 5 new ratings a day (10-28 to 11-06).

### Who's competing

| Product | Scale (11-06) | How it differs |
|---|---|---|
| Collectr (US) | 69k iOS ratings in the US store; 3.38M on Play | Market leader, built around dollars and English cards; for Europe, prices don't split by language |
| PokéCardex (France, from 2015) | 1.91M on Play; 4,969 iOS ratings in the French store, #6 top grossing | Long-running community index, more of a collection checklist; prices aren't split by language |
| Cardzia (France, 2025-12) | 1,291 iOS ratings in the French store, #26 top grossing | Same approach, French cards and sealed products; only French and Japanese Pokémon; price sources not disclosed |
| Dex (Netherlands) | 1,314 iOS ratings in the French store; 180k on Play | Multi-TCG, no price history kept |
| folio.fyi (web) | Not verified | Median sale prices by language, more transparent method, no app |
| ZebraDex, BinDex, MarketDex, and others | Hundreds to tens of thousands of ratings | New card-scanner apps from the past 2026 years are all moving toward "European prices, split by language, portfolio tracking" |

France already has three local products competing for this table, and PokéItem is quickly adding 9 card languages and 9 currencies, with international creators next on LinkedIn. But outside the French-speaking market it hasn't caught on: #9–38 top grossing in Belgium, best ranking #17 in Switzerland, 38 in Italy, 48 in Spain, and almost no ratings in the US or UK.

### If it were you

**B. Worth trying, but not in France.** The gap of "local leaders pricing wrong" is real, and PokéItem proves collectors will pay weekly, yearly, or lifetime. But France is already crowded with three local products, PokéItem's own revenue is public on TrustMRR, and generic AI card-scanner shells are everywhere. The opportunity is in the languages and audiences it hasn't yet secured.

**Who it suits** : people already active in a non-English card scene, with their own community or following: German, Italian, Spanish, or Polish Pokémon or One Piece circles; or people who know local price sources in Japan, Korea, or Southeast Asia.

**Who it doesn't suit** : teams trying to build "another English AI card-scanner app," or anyone with no price data source and no presence in any card community. Scan recognition is no longer the moat; the moat is "people in this scene trust your prices."

**How to do it:**

1. **Switch language, switch price source.** Germany is Cardmarket's home turf, and Italy, Spain, and Poland also buy plenty of local-language versions. Start with one country, one game, and prices in the local language. Build sealed products and profit-and-loss curves into the paywall, and copy its weekly / yearly / lifetime pricing tiers. It's already on the App Store in Italy and Spain, so your edge has to be deeper community and localization (inference: its interface and content still center on French).

2. **Switch categories.** The same structure works for other collectibles where a US leader prices in dollars and local markets have their own price sources: sports cards, Japanese trading cards and figures, coins (two coin-valuation apps sit in the French reference category's top 10).

3. **Do what it hasn't done well.** Sale prices instead of listing prices (folio.fyi is attacking this), Japanese cards, Chinese and Thai cards (9-16 reviews ask for them), and collector bookkeeping details like "how do I record cost once I open a box."

**How to acquire users** : follow its playbook and buy almost no paid acquisition. First, post beta invites in local-language card subreddits, Discords, and Facebook groups, and have the founder personally reply to every piece of feedback. Send personal referral codes to local card YouTubers. Turn users into promoters with "post videos, earn XP per view, season prizes in card boxes." Publish the data the day a new set releases; that's free traffic once a month.

**Timing** : the 30th-anniversary buzz lasts through late 2026 and the first half of 2027, when new players and collectors are most numerous. Once PokéItem rolls out international creators, the other European language markets won't stay empty. Aim to launch before spring 2027.

**What would mean you read it wrong** :

- PokéItem also broke into the top 10 reference-chart spots on the Italian, Spanish, and German App Stores within six months, which suggests its localization is good enough that latecomers won't find an opening.

- Its revenue fell back below $30k a month after the 10th anniversary, which suggests this wave of collecting is seasonal, not steady demand for a tool.

- Collectr started pulling Cardmarket prices by card language, the leader is filling the gap, and that leaves only community to compete on.

## Why PokéItem - Cards & Items (fr.pokeitem.app) is working

> Research date 2026-11-06. Data sources: our googleplay / appstore / indie (TrustMRR) / metaads libraries, plus web (Jina / Brave) and TikHub.

### One line

A two-person French team (Hugo Tribet, "0xPocho", plus CTO Farellis; started 2026-03-28, fully self-funded) building a trading card game (TCG) collection valuation app: card scanning, with live Cardmarket prices in each card's **own language** (French cards priced on French listings). It fills the gap between the US-made Collectr, which prices in USD and English cards, and the veteran French PokéCardex, which leans toward catalogs. It also caught the Pokémon 30 anniversary collecting wave. Distribution has cost almost nothing: the founder builds in public on French X, Reddit and LinkedIn, runs creator referral codes, and runs "clipping" (users post videos for season XP prizes). Revenue is public on TrustMRR (about $30k over the last 30 days).

**The Play numbers in the data card are the minor part** : Play has 13,501 installs, 7 days +1,194 (googleplay library 2026-11-06), but the main battlefield is the French iOS store. It ranks #5,491 in the Reference top-grossing chart, rated 4.74 (appstore library / iTunes lookup 2026-11-06).

### 1. Data profile

| Metric | Value | Source |
|---|---|---|

| Play Top Grossing chart | Productivity top grossing #49–58 in the French store only | googleplay chart_rank |
| iOS FR | Reference top grossing fluctuated between #3–13 (11-01 #3,11-06 #5); rating 443 → 491 (10-28 → 11-06, about 5/day) | appstore app_day |
| iOS in other stores | Belgium Reference top grossing #9–38, Switzerland best #17, Luxembourg 19, Italy 38, Spain 48; ratings in other stores close to 0 | appstore app_day |
| Revenue (TrustMRR, verified via RevenueCat) | Last 30 days $30,375, MRR $18,297,2,924 from active subscriptions, $85,605 cumulative, about 55,000 users | trustmrr.com/startup/pokeitem (updated 2026-11-06) |
| Monthly revenue | May $2,664 → June $8,787 → July $6,974 → August $9,464 → September $20,385 → October $32,378 | indie library revenue_month |

Top 10 French iOS Reference top-grossing apps over the same period: translators, CoinIn / CoinSnap (coin valuation), the Quran, **PokéItem (5)** , **PokéCardex (6)** , WoodSense… In France it ranks alongside the veteran PokéCardex as the top-earning card tool, well ahead of Collectr (French store 59), Cardzia (26) and Dex (52) (appstore library 2026-11-06).

### 2. Competitors

| Competitors | Platform | Launched | Scale | How it differs from PokéItem |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Collectr | iOS / Android | 2022-01 | US iOS 69k ratings, Reference top grossing #9; Play 3.38M installs | US product, centered on TCGplayer and USD, 20+ games. European users only get Cardmarket trend prices (not split by language). PokéItem user reviews literally call it "Collectr for Europe." |
| PokéCardex | iOS / Android / web | 2015 (new iOS build 2023) | Play 1.91M installs; French iOS 4,969 rating, Reference top grossing #6 | Veteran French community catalog with 67,000 cards. Focused on collection checklists; prices not split by language; Plus €4.99/month. |
| Dex - for TCG Collectors | iOS / Android | 2021 | 1,314 iOS ratings in the French store; 180k on Play | Dutch team, multi-TCG, keeps no price history. |
| Cardzia | iOS / Android | 2025-12 | French iOS 1,291 rating, Reference top grossing 26 | Also targets the French market with cards and sealed product, claims French sale prices but doesn't disclose its source; only French/Japanese Pokémon. |
| HoloDex / MyDex / FoilSnap / Rare Candy / Pokefolio / BinDex / ZebraDex, etc. | iOS / Android | 2024–2026 | Hundreds to tens of thousands of ratings across European and US stores. | Generic "AI card scanner price-check" shells, mostly English, single price source, weekly subscriptions. |
| folio.fyi | Web | End of 2025 – 2026 | Not verified | Prices based on language-specific **sales** (not listings); wrote a dedicated comparison article ranking PokéItem #2 |
| Cardmarket itself | Web | — | Europe's largest TCG trading platform. | Has prices but no collection management, scanning or bundle valuation |

Bottom line: the niche is crowded (dozens of scanner apps globally), but **a product built specifically for French/European users, valuing cards in their language and tracking sealed product (ETBs, displays, UPCs) as investments** had only Cardzia as a smaller rival when it launched.

### 3. Growth tactics (evidence)

1. **Founder builds in public + French crypto/tech X circle** . Founder 0xPocho is an ex-SwissBorg employee and runs a long-standing French crypto X account (2,817 followers). He posted a long X thread, "PokéItem : ta collection Pokémon TCG a enfin une valeur 🇫🇷" (2026-05-22). He did an AMA in the crypto community The Cryptomasks Discord. CTO Farellis is someone he met on Twitter (x.com/0xPocho, twstalker, LinkedIn). Confirmed.

2. **Beta recruiting in the French Reddit community** : 2026-05-21 posted in r/PokemonTCGfr, "Je construis PokeItem, une app FR… j'ouvre la beta", saying it then covered "about 18,000 French cards, live Cardmarket French-store prices, and I'm building it alone" (Brave search snippet). Confirmed.

3. **Creator referral / codes** : French Pokémon YouTuber alexpkm's video description links `app.pokeitem.fr/go/alexpkmcode`; X account Pokédiavenir 2026-07-30 recommends it ("Créé par un français passionné"). A LinkedIn post says the next step is to "start enabling international creators." Creator codes confirmed to exist; payout share unknown.

4. **"Clipping" user UGC program** (from 2026-09-23): users post about PokéItem on X / TikTok / Instagram / YouTube, and views convert to season XP (X / TikTok 10 views = 1 XP; IG / YT 5 views = 1 XP). Posts are reviewed manually. Season 1 had 52 winners in total, with prizes including a UPC Mewtwo Charizard, ETBs, the 30 anniversary box and memberships. Referring a friend earns 10,000 XP. The founder's words: "Instead of burning money on Meta / Google / TikTok ads, we reward users" (LinkedIn). Confirmed.

5. **Giveaways + offline events** : X giveaways of ETBs (2026-06), partnership with Voggt giving away Paris Games Week "Gala TCG" tickets; in-app daily check-in / scan tasks and season leaderboards. Confirmed.

6. **Official account short videos** : TikTok @pokeitem has 174 videos and 1,202 followers, about 800–1,500 views per video (TikHub 2026-11-06); YouTube @pokeitem has 574 subscribers and 120 videos. Modest volume, a basic foundation.

7. **SEO** : pokeitem.fr has many French long-tail pages (Pokémon card price app, scan Pokémon cards, Pokémon collection value, blog), and third-party comparison articles (folio.fyi) also mention it. Existence confirmed, contribution unknown.

8. **Timing: Pokémon 30 anniversary** : the founder says they "rode the 30 anniversary hype well, posting content early, and new cards and boxes went live in the app on release day" (LinkedIn). TikTok content is also all about the 30 anniversary and ME6 Règne Delta new-series openings. Confirmed.

9. **Paid ads** : no PokéItem Page found in the metaads library (the library only tracks listed advertisers, so absence doesn't mean no spend). The founder explicitly says they don't run Meta / Google / TikTok ads.

### 4. Why it took off

- **Real and growing demand** : the Pokémon 30 anniversary (2026) boosted collecting and investing interest in France, and people want to know "what are my cards and sealed product worth." France is one of Europe's largest Pokémon card markets, and players buy lots of **French-language cards** .

- **Existing tools get French prices wrong** : Collectr prices in USD and English cards; Cardmarket's trend price mixes six languages and every condition together (folio.fyi's real example: trend price 757 €, English NM lowest listing 1,600 €). PokéItem launched on "Cardmarket NM lowest listing by card language" and later added eBay sold prices and its own TCGplayer-based index. Reviews keep saying "prices you can trust", "no more digging through eBay", "Collectr for Europe".

- **Treat the collection as a portfolio** : sealed products (ETB, display, UPC, tin) across 13,000 types, with purchase price, P&L and a portfolio value curve. This is what French "investor" collectors want, and it's where the paywall sits (value curve, P&L and unlimited scans are Premium).

- **Ships very fast** : "sixth update this month". A social feed, authenticity voting, a marketplace (no commission), trade matching, a shop map, price alerts, a Pokédex, and other TCGs (One Piece, Riftbound, Yu-Gi-Oh!, Dragon Ball) all landed within a few months. Reviews often praise "better every week" and "fast support".

- **Aggressive monetization** : the free tier gets only 20 scans/month, and Japanese cards are locked behind payment. Weekly subscription €2.99, lifetime €159.99 / €249.99 (Play in-app purchase cap $289.99). Some reviewers call it expensive, but 2,924 subscriptions and $18k MRR show French collectors will pay.

- **Almost zero acquisition cost** : clipping + referrals + giveaways turn acquisition cost into prizes (dozens of gift boxes). "100% bootstrapped, already profitable" (LinkedIn: profitable by the time of €75k ARR).

### 5. What sets it apart, and whether that explains its growth

The edge = **"localized pricing" + "collection as portfolio" + "community retention"** :

- Prices by card language and by the European market (Cardmarket), 9 card languages (Chinese Simplified and Traditional kept separate), 9 currencies;

- Sealed products and graded cards (PSA / PCA / CGC / BGS label recognition, PSA population) tracked together with P&L;

- Built-in social, authenticity checks, a no-commission marketplace, trade matching and season XP, so it's more than a tool.

**It explains the launch, but only half of it** . The French-store iOS chart reached #5, above Collectr, on the strength of accurate French card prices (Collectr ranks #59 in France). Outside French-speaking markets it barely ranks (single-digit iOS ratings in the US and UK stores), so the edge currently holds only in France (plus French-speaking Belgium, Switzerland and Luxembourg). The other half is the founder's community distribution and the 30-year anniversary timing.

### 6. How many people have seen it

- **Revenue is public** : TrustMRR shows revenue verified via RevenueCat, $30,375 over the last 30 days, $18,297 MRR; whatsthe.app lists it too. The founder posts user counts on LinkedIn over time (30k → 40k → 45k), ARR (€75k) and App Store rankings.

- But discussion is mostly confined to the **French-speaking community** (French X, r/PokemonTCGfr, LinkedIn). Our X corpus (x-radar) has no hits, and I found no English media or major accounts covering it.

- Followers: Cardzia, also French-market (2025-12 already live, earlier than PokéItem, so not a copy); folio.fyi wrote a long post directly benchmarking it (sold prices by language, more granular); 2026-year-old ZebraDex (French name "Cartes & Prix TCG"), BinDex, MarketDex and "TCG Portfolio: Card Scanner" (2026-09) are all moving toward "by language / European prices / portfolio".

### 7. What others can borrow

1. **Find the gap where a US leader prices badly locally** : same category, but the price sources, language versions and currencies differ in Europe, Japan and Latin America, and US products won't do the detail. PokéItem's whole starting point was "French cards at French card prices".

2. **Turn a collection tool into a portfolio tool** : purchase price, P&L and value curves sit behind the paywall, giving naturally high ARPU (weekly subscription + lifetime tier).

3. **Trade prizes for UGC** : clipping (view counts for XP and physical prizes) + referral XP + giveaways. The cost is dozens of gift boxes, cheaper than paid acquisition, and it suits collectible categories where people want physical rewards.

4. **Ride big IP moments** : listing data on the day a new set releases, and publishing content ahead of time.

5. The founder's build-in-public posts and TrustMRR revenue sharing are distribution in themselves, but they also attract copycats.

### 8. Uncertain

- How many of the 55,000 users are on iOS / Android / web is unverified; Play shows only 13.5k installs, so iOS + web is likely the core.

- Whether influencer partnerships were paid, and how much, is unverified; whether Apple Search Ads was used is unverified.

- The "used globally" claim doesn't match the data: outside French-speaking markets iOS ratings are close to 0, and internationalization (Italian, German, Spanish) hasn't taken off.

- How much of the revenue growth (September→October +59%) comes from the 30-year anniversary seasonality versus what's sustainable is unknown. Policy risk from The Pokémon Company or Cardmarket over data use is not assessed.

- Play has no rating data (ratings are empty in the library; AppBrain shows 5 ratings, 3.8 stars), so the Android experience may be weaker than iOS.
