Discord has been blocked in Turkey for two years, so a Valorant streamer built a "Discord that works without a VPN": 12k installs in a month
What it is A Turkish-built Discord clone: servers, channels, voice rooms and screen sharing all work in Turkey without a VPN, plus a 3D room, with avatar decorations sold for revenue.
Why it took off Discord has been blocked in Turkey since October 2024 years ago and still is. It has even been pulled from phone app stores. The founder is a Valorant streamer with 340k subscribers and also runs a 500k-player squad-finding site. One Reel saying "Discord is finished" pulled people in.
CHow you could follow Don't build another local Discord in Turkey. If you want to learn from it, copy the playbook: find a market where a major platform is blocked but the demand remains. Don't change the interface, and sell decorations and open a bot API from day one. Without distribution resources, building bots and tools for servers on these platforms is the safer bet.
- Data (updated daily) · first launch 2026-10-01 · 11-07 installs 12,638
Android · Total installs worldwide Data 2026-10-29 → 2026-11-07 (10 days, 10 observations). Google's detail page only refreshes install counts every other day, so a flat day doesn't mean nobody installed.
Micup almost copied Discord: servers, channels, voice rooms, DMs and screen sharing are all there, plus a 3D room where you walk in as an avatar. It launched on Google Play in October 1, got 12.6k installs in a month, and doubled in the week of 10-29 to 11-05. It took off because Discord has been blocked in Turkey for two years, and the founder is a game streamer with 340k subscribers. The second factor isn't something an ordinary founder can borrow, and the "local Discord" niche already has four or five players.
"At least they didn't make it different"
Two years to the day since Discord was blocked in Turkey, on 2026 Oct 9, a user named Affetmezz from Ankara posted on Technopat, Turkey's biggest tech forum: "Micup, a Discord alternative, is live." The body was just a few lines: "Not sure if anyone's posted this. Saw it on Instagram by chance, the app's great, once more people know, there'll be more of us." Below it, a Reels clip.
The first reply was blunt: "I hate knockoff projects. Name and logo swapped, everything else copied one-to-one. What's the point? I'd rather just use the original."
The poster replied: "Still better than fiddling with GoodbyeDPI. Install from the store in a minute. At least they didn't make it different."
Those two replies sum up the product: it's Discord, just usable in Turkey without a VPN. GoodbyeDPI is a tool Turks commonly use to get around the block. It barely works on PCs, and on phones the Discord app has been pulled from the store. The thread has 743 views and 9 replies so far (Technopat, 11-06). The poster kept defending the product in replies, which raises the question of whether they're part of the team.
What it is
Open micup.gg and the homepage reads "Everyone in the same room." The feature list maps one-to-one to Discord: create servers, text channels and voice rooms, DMs, screen sharing, a feed, and badges. It has one Discord doesn't: a 3D room, where you walk in as an avatar in your browser and the closer someone is, the louder they sound, which suits watching matches together. Supported platforms are web, Windows (Microsoft Store), macOS, Linux and Android. iOS is "coming soon," and the site tells iPhone users to open the web version in Safari for now.
The money is in cosmetics: avatar decorations, animated wings, colored usernames, the stuff Discord Nitro sells. On Google Play, the in-app prices for 11-03 went from $1.99–19.13 to $4.99–49.99. A third-party ecosystem has grown up around Discord the same way: someone built micuplist.me, a voting leaderboard for Micup servers and bots, already listing Turkish-language bots like Radyo.
Where the traffic comes from
| Date | Google Play cumulative installs |
|---|---|
| 10-01 | Launched |
| 10-29 | 6,166 |
| 10-31 | 9,396 |
| 11-02 | 11,251 |
| 11-05 | 12,638 |
Data from Google Play (10-29 to 11-06). Third-party estimates show a wave of about 500 installs a day in mid-October, then a near-stall from 10-22 to 10-28, then another wave from 10-29 and 10-30 at about 1,600 a day. Growth came in bursts, each time someone pushed it, not through slow organic spread.
The main promoter is the founder. The developer is called Eph Games, taken from Asim "Epha" Abdullazade's gamer ID. He is a former professional Valorant player, with 342k subscribers on YouTube (@ephavlr), about 53k followers on Instagram, and a Micup download link in his bio. He posted a Reel himself captioned "Discord bitti. 💀 Biz daha iyisini yaptık." which means "Discord is finished. We made something better."
He still has a traffic pool. Micup's Google Play contact email is [email protected]. Premate.gg is the Valorant squad-finder he built earlier, claiming 500k+ players, and Semrush estimates about 360k visits a month from Turkey (2026-09). He used the same playbook to push Premate: he personally posted a Reel, "Make the Valorant toxic players disappear."
The rest of the traffic came from a few small spots: tech account Dijital Nexus posted "DISCORD'UN BABASI GELDİ!" (Discord's daddy is here) on 101, about 2,900 likes and 219 comments, tagged #reklamdeğiltavsiye (not an ad, a recommendation). Whether they were paid is unclear. The comments are full of people pasting invite links to their own servers. There's also a Technopat thread and a few small YouTube channels saying "our team moved from Discord to MicUp, no more VPN hassle." I couldn't confirm whether it ran Meta ads.
On the charts it only showed up in Turkey's Communication category: Top Free #10-29 on 26,11-01, #37,11-06 on 21. 11-06 charted on Top Grossing for the first time, at #49. Turkey's Top Grossing bar for this category is low, so this only shows people are buying the cosmetics, not how much they're paying. On the same day's Top Grossing chart, the paid voice tool TeamSpeak 3 ranked #58, and on Top Paid it was #2. Turkish gamers are clearly paying for voice tools that work.
Who it's competing with
A "local Discord" isn't a new idea in Turkey, and Micup isn't the first to try it.
| Product | Scale (11-06) | Compared with Micup |
|---|---|---|
| Discord | Google Play 700M+ globally | The original. Blocked by an Ankara court order since 2024-10-09, still not lifted as of late October 2026. |
| Jubbio | Google Play 18,133, +7 in the last 1,762 days; the official site claims 30k+ users | Launched at the end of 2025, also Discord-style, also pitching "Discord is obsolete." It has iOS but no 3D rooms. Micup reached ~70% of its installs within a month of launch, and its installs over the last 7 days are 3.7x its own. |
| Descall | Not verified | A Turkish solo developer built it, and it's free. The approach is different: they wrote a long post titled "Discord açıldı mı?" ("Is Discord back?"), and 10-17 is still being updated to catch people searching that question. |
| Frogcord | Just launched | 11-05 posted on the DonanımHaber forum: "I built a local Discord for voice chat without a VPN." |
| sadeC | Very small | Came out after the 2024 block and never took off. |
| TeamSpeak 3 | Google Play 2.16M | An established paid voice app with no community features. |
The products are similar; they all copy Discord. What separates them is who can bring users in. Jubbio launched nine months earlier, and Micup nearly caught up in one month. The gap is Epha's account and the Premate users. The 3D rooms give the ads something new to say: "We're better than Discord" makes a better video than "We're just like Discord." Commenters also call it a "Roblox knockoff" and say it "eats GPU." Users come for the no-VPN part, not the 3D rooms.
Its risks
The biggest risk is Discord reopening. In June 2026, Turkey's transport minister said Discord would "probably" reopen; as of early November it hadn't (Gizmodo, vpnalert; tests in early November still showed it blocked). Once Discord is back, the "no VPN needed" pitch is gone, and what's left is the servers people have already built on Micup and the cosmetics they've bought. The UI is also a near copy, and forum users are already saying "if it gets bigger, it'll get sued."
Two things aren't visible from outside: how many people stay and use it every day (the Google Play rating count is still empty), and how many use the web and desktop versions. The Play numbers are only part of the picture; people were already using the web version in September.
If it were you
My take: Don't build another local Discord in Turkey. Four or five are already in the space, and the fastest one runs on its founder's 340k subscribers and 500k users. You can't copy that, and once Discord reopens the whole business loses its reason to exist. What's worth learning is the playbook behind it.
Who it fits: People who already have an audience in a particular country's gaming or streaming scene, or who already run a gamer tool site. Epha's approach was to grow users through a tool site, then launch a new product through his own account. That can be copied, as long as you have people who will actually bring their audience with you.
Who it doesn't fit: Indie developers with no distribution who can only write code. Products like this have no feature moat. Frogcord and sadeC were both built by one person, and in the end what decides it is who can bring a group of friends over.
How to do it: Look for places where a big platform has been blocked or pulled from app stores while the demand is still there. Discord was also blocked in Russia in October 2024, but local IM apps already compete for that market, so research it first. When you build it, don't mess with the UI much; users want zero learning curve. Sell identity cosmetics from day one, and open a bot API so third parties build on top of you. You could also skip building a platform altogether and build bots, templates, and ranking tools for the Turkish servers on Micup and Jubbio. That's cheap, and you don't have to bet on which one wins.
How to get users: If you have your own account, post short comparison videos like "X is done, we built something better," each one focused on a single difference you can actually show on camera. If you don't have an account, follow Descall's approach: target search terms like "Has X reopened?" and "X alternatives," publish a status page that keeps getting updated, and add forum posts and partnerships with small tech accounts.
When to move: As early as you can. The window depends on when the block lifts, which you don't control. In this wave, the space was already crowded before Discord reopened.
Signs you've misread it: ① Three months after Discord reopens in Turkey, Micup's installs and Top Grossing rank don't drop noticeably (meaning it built its own community, not just a replacement). ② Jubbio or Descall, which have no creator backing, break into the top 20 of Turkey's Communication Top Free (meaning distribution isn't the only barrier). ③ After Micup launches on iOS, it starts getting traction in countries outside Turkey.

Why Micup: Chat and Community (gg.micup.app) took off
Channel: Google Play | Developer: Eph Games (contact email [email protected]) | Store launch 2026-10-01 | Research date 2026-11-06
One line
Micup is a Turkish Discord clone (servers, text channels, voice rooms, DMs, screen sharing, plus 3D virtual voice rooms in the browser and avatar cosmetics as in-app purchases). It took off because three things stacked up: Discord has been blocked in Turkey for two years with no end in sight (demand), the UI and workflow are almost a straight copy of Discord, so users don't have to relearn anything (product), and the founder is a Turkish Valorant creator with 340k YouTube subscribers, and he also runs Premate.gg, a squad-finder that claims 500k players (distribution). The "local Discord alternative" space is already crowded, and Micup isn't the first, but on the back of the founder's channels, it got within 70% of early mover Jubbio's installs in one month.
1. Data (googleplay library, 2026-11-06)
- Cumulative global installs 12,638, +7 in the last 6,472 days (10-29 is 6,166, doubling in a week).
- Curve since launch (app_day_ext, AppstoreSpy estimate): 10-18 about 4,000; 10-18 to 10-21 about 500–580 a day; 10-22 to 10-28 dropped to 3–160 a day; 10-29/30 about 1,600 a day, and 10-31/11-01 about 760,11-02 to 11-04 a day, 335–780. That points to waves of promotion: one in October, then a bigger one at the end of October.
- Charts: it has only charted in Turkey's Communication category. Top Free 10-29 #26 → 11-01 #37 → 11-06 #21; 11-06 entered Turkey's Communication Top Grossing for the first time, at #49. On the same day, #58 on Top Grossing was TeamSpeak 3 (#2 on Top Paid), which shows Turkish gamers are really looking for voice tools.
- In-app purchases: before 11-02 it was $1.99–19.13,11-03 minimum, changed to $4.99–49.99 (app_snap). The official site pitches avatar cosmetics, animated wings, and colored nicknames (basically Discord Nitro; one comment says "Nitro renamed to Premium, everything else the same").
- Infrequent updates: 10-22, 10-30, 10-31, 11-01, 11-04, and 11-06 each shipped one release (2026.10.1000 → 2026.11.400).
- The rating count has stayed empty, so there are very few ratings.
- Multi-platform: web at micup.gg, Windows (Microsoft Store), macOS, Linux, Android; iOS "coming soon" (micup.gg).
- The web version came before Play: as early as 2026-09-18, a YouTube small channel (LORD RAMO) already had a video saying "our team moved from Discord to MicUp, no more VPN hassle" (2.7K views).
II. Competitors

It positions itself as "Turkey's community platform," is a Discord clone, and pushes the "Discord is outdated" line on Instagram. Its selling points are 128kbps audio, 60fps video, and end-to-end encryption. It has no 3D rooms, but it does have iOS. Micup's installs at 1 months are 70% of its total, and its new installs in the last 7 days are 3.7x its own. |
| TeamSpeak 3 | All platforms | 2013 | Play 2.16M; #2 on Turkey's Communication Top Paid | An old, paid, voice-only tool with no community or Nitro-style features. |

| Fan-made versions such as KroldmanV2 | Web | 2024–2025 | Very small | Fan works that YouTubers have tested. A Technopat user said: "People have tried the 'Turkish app' angle with Discord clones before, and none of them took off." |
| Stoat (formerly Revolt), Guilded, Mumble, Element/Matrix | Open source / global | Early on | Niche worldwide | Often recommended in Turkish-language "Discord alternatives" roundups, but nobody builds localization or promotion for Turkey specifically. |
| Turkish domestic IM: Turkcell BiP | Android / iOS | 2013 | #7 on Turkey's Communication Top Free | Built like WhatsApp, one-to-one and group chat, with no servers or voice rooms. |
3. Where users come from
- The founder is a creator himself and uses his own channel as distribution (confirmed). The Reel on Instagram that says "Discord bitti. 💀 Biz daha iyisini yaptık." (Discord is done, we made something better) is from Asim "Epha" Abdullazade (@epha777, about 53k followers on Instagram, bio includes "Micup.gg indirme linki"). He is a former Valorant pro (he has a player page on vlr.gg), has 342k subscribers on YouTube as @ephavlr, goes by ephaa on Twitch, and has 18k followers on TikTok as epha777. The developer name "Eph Games" comes from Epha. He used the same approach before, posting Reels about Premate.gg ("Premate.gg - make Valorant's toxic players disappear"), a squad-finding platform that claims 500k+ players. Semrush estimates 2026-09 ranks #3007 in Turkey with about 360k monthly visits. The contact email for Micup on Play is [email protected], so both products come from the same team, and Micup can funnel Turkish players straight from the existing traffic.
- Instagram Reels, posted by themselves plus mid-tier creators (confirmed). The official @micupgg account has 1,684 followers, and there's a YouTube channel @micupgg posting English Shorts ("Discord is gone!"). The tech account Dijital Nexus 101 posted "DISCORD'UN BABASI GELDİ!" (Discord's daddy has arrived), which got about 2.9K likes and 219 comments, tagged #reklamdeğiltavsiye ("not an ad, a recommendation"). It's likely paid or a swap deal (unverified). The comments are full of people posting micup.gg/invite links to recruit members to their servers.
- Forum post (confirmed). 2026-10-09 The thread "Discord alternative Micup is live" on Technopat Sosyal got 743 views. The poster is Affetmezz (Ankara), who also defended the product in replies ("better than fiddling with GoodbyeDPI, it installs in a minute from the store"). Likely someone from the team (unverified). The post went up on the second anniversary of Discord's block in Turkey.
- Small streamers and server owners promoting it organically (confirmed, small scale). YouTube has recommendation videos and Shorts from small creators (Kick streamers' Shorts with invite links). The third-party site micuplist.me runs a bot and server voting board for Micup (Radyo and other bots, tagged #Turkish), which shows the developer ecosystem is being built on the Discord model.
- Store search / searching "Discord alternatifi" (inferred). Searching "Micup discord alternatifi" surfaces the Technopat thread and YouTube videos first. The Play title was localized to "Micup: Sohbet ve Topluluk" (chat and community). It doesn't own the word "discord," so it relies mostly on word of mouth and social media.
- Paid acquisition: installs come in waves (10-29/30 about 1,600 a day), which lines up with a Reels push or influencer posts, but our ad library shows no Meta ads for it (the library only tracks listed products), unverified.
4. Why it made the list
- The demand was manufactured by the ban: Discord has been blocked in Turkey for two years and pulled from app stores, so mobile users need a VPN to use it. "No VPN, installs in a minute from the store" is Micup's biggest pitch (the Technopat reply, and LORD RAMO's video title "No More Dealing with VPNs").
- Nearly a copy of Discord, so switching costs are close to zero: forum users complained that "the name and logo changed but everything else is copied one-for-one," but the team says "users are already used to this interface," and users accepted it ("everyone's used to Discord, so it doesn't feel strange"). Servers, channels, bots, and Nitro-style decorations are all there, and third-party bot rankings followed.
- The founder has distribution: a Valorant influencer with 340k subscribers, plus Premate.gg with 500k users, can send young Turkish players straight over. That's the main reason it's growing faster than Jubbio.
- The 3D rooms are a viral hook: "walk into a 3D room, the closer you are the louder you sound, watch matches together" gives it material for short videos about "we're better than Discord." Without that, the only pitch would be "we're the same as Discord." Commenters also call it a "Roblox knockoff" or say it "eats GPU," and it's unclear whether the 3D rooms will keep people around.
- Charging from day one: avatar decorations, wings, colored nicknames. Price tier 11-03 moved from $1.99–19 to $4.99–49.99,11-06 and it charted #49 in the Turkey COMMUNICATION Top Grossing chart. The bar for charting in this category in Turkey is low, so this doesn't show how much it earns, only that people are paying.
V. Differentiation, and why it took off
Compared with Discord itself, the real difference isn't the product but "it works in Turkey without a VPN". Compared with other local alternatives like Jubbio, sadeC, and Frogcord, the product difference is the 3D avatar rooms in the browser, spatial audio, 4K screen sharing, and "watch together." The bigger difference is the founder's own audience (Epha plus Premate.gg). The data suggests distribution drove the growth, not the 3D features. Users came for "Discord without a VPN," and the 3D rooms just gave the ads something to show.
6. Awareness
It's circulating in small circles: Turkish-language threads on Technopat, Instagram Reels, and a few small YouTube channels. Revenue isn't public, and no English-language media or major X accounts have written about it (x-radar found 0 results for "micup" over the last 30 days). Searching "micup" on TikTok mostly returns Roblox's "Mic Up" map.
VII. Copycats
Yes. 2026-11-05 On DonanımHaber, Frogcord appeared ("I wrote a local Discord alternative, voice without a VPN"), and Jubbio, which launched earlier, used the same pitch. Turkey's "local Discord" space has several builders, not just Micup.
VIII. Takeaways
- A country where a global platform is blocked is a ready-made market: when a big global platform is blocked in a country and pulled from app stores, a clone with the same interface, local compliance, and no VPN needed has almost no switching cost.
- A founder-influencer plus an owned audience for cold start: first build a utility (Premate.gg) to collect users, then launch the new product, with the founder's own account as the ad slot.
- Package the clone as the "better version": add a differentiating feature that's easy to turn into short video (3D rooms), and shift the pitch from "alternative" to "it's finished, we're better."
- Sell Nitro-style identity decorations as in-app purchases from day one, and build a third-party ecosystem of bots and server rankings alongside.
9. Uncertain
- Whether it ran paid Meta ads, and whether the 10-29/30 wave came from ads, creators, or Epha's own posts, is unverified.
- Whether Dijital Nexus's recommendation of 101 is paid is unverified; the relationship between Technopat poster Affetmezz and the team is also unverified.
- Retention and DAU: Play shows no rating count, so retention can't be assessed.
- Risk: if Discord gets unblocked in Turkey (2026-06's minister says it probably will be), demand could vanish overnight. Forum posts also warn that once it gets bigger, it'll draw lawsuits.
- Web and PC user counts aren't visible; the Play numbers are only part of the picture.
