Bali's "Uber for massages": 1,889 installs, a template you can copy, but not the grind

What it is An app in Bali that matches on-demand massage, nail and beauty services with tourists and expat residents, dispatching a therapist to your room the way a ride-hailing app sends a driver.

Why it took off It hasn't really taken off yet: a Meta campaign at the end of October plus beach and hotel QR-code activations brought in about 950 installs over four or five days, and Indonesia's beauty chart has a very low bar, which makes the ranking look better than it is.

CHow you could follow it If you're in a tourist city, start with a website plus WhatsApp and a few existing on-demand spa partners to validate repeat orders before building an app, then use Meta ads to acquire both sides (tourists and therapists).

Grade C: the product template and paid-acquisition playbook are worth learning, but this is an offline two-sided business that needs someone managing therapists on the ground every day. Bali already has GlowGo and Happy Day, and Vietnam and Thailand have Glow with 389k installs, so the payoff for a small team to follow is poor. Almost nobody knows about it yet.

GlowGo lets tourists in Bali call a massage or nail therapist to villas and hotels. In three weeks it shipped ten versions and reached #25 on Indonesia's Play "Beauty" free chart. But it has only 1,889 installs in total worldwide, and that chart can reach the top 30 with a few dozen installs a day. It hasn't broken out yet. What's worth watching is how it acquires users and therapists at the same time, and what this business has grown into in other Southeast Asian tourist cities.

An ad that says "Skip the traffic"

In October 10, GlowGo's Facebook page posted a vertical Reels ad with one line of copy: "Skip the traffic, not the spa," with an "Install now" button linking straight to the App Store. This is the standard look of a Meta app install ad. Anyone who has been to southern Bali knows the line: the roads jam up by evening.

The same day, it posted a referral rule on Instagram: each friend invited earns Rp 50,000 (about $3) in credit, usable on the first order. On Nov 3 it posted again, this time recruiting therapists. The link carried utm_medium=paid&utm_campaign=partner_recruiting, and the recruiting areas listed were Ubud, Canggu, Seminyak, Uluwatu and Sanur, the five places tourists congregate most.

On Nov 6 it shipped version 2.6 on the App Store, adding "pet and massage orders can answer a few questions when placed." It came only 2.5 hours after the previous version, 23.

What it is

A two-sided platform: the customer app GlowGo (on Play since Sep 8, iOS Sep 16) and the therapist app GlowGo Partner (iOS Aug 31). The company is PT GlowGo App Asia, registered in Badung Regency, Bali, and it runs only this one product.

Users open the app, choose a service and time, enter a hotel room number or villa address, optionally request a male or female therapist, and the system dispatches a nearby "Glower" (its word for therapists), whom you can track on a map as they approach. Payment by card, QR or e-wallet. Official pricing (11-06): massage from Rp 195k, a 60-minute Balinese massage Rp 270k (about $16), nails from Rp 60k, facials from Rp 250k, and IV drips. The category is expanding into pet care and babysitting, with yoga and Pilates marked "coming soon". As of Nov 6, the website homepage showed 55 Glowers online.

It copies the look of India's Urban Company (42.6M installs on Play), just swapping the audience for tourists and expats: English UI, cashless payments, room-number entry, couples and group bookings.

How the surge happened

Cumulative installs on Play (checked 11-06):

DateTotal installsNew in this period
10-29731—
10-311,240+509
11-021,680+440
11-031,747+67
11-051,825+78
11-061,889+64

About 950 installs came in over four or five days from late October to early November, with only dozens a day before and after. That shape looks like a paid campaign or event, not word of mouth building slowly. The timing fits too: on Oct 28 the 2.2 version shipped "order by scanning the QR code at GlowGo missions" and "select your hotel room at checkout," and during the same period TikTok was pushing beach and sunset massage content. The most likely explanation is Meta ads combined with offline QR-code activations at beaches and hotels (inference).

Discount the chart rank. On Nov 6, most of the top 40 on Indonesia's Play Beauty free chart were beauty-camera apps with millions to tens of millions of installs, and the bar for the local clinic apps mixed in is very low: #17 Larissa Aesthetic Center had only 379 installs. So a "#25 ranking" says little.

There's also an invisible piece: tourists mostly use iPhones, Apple doesn't publish download counts, and on Indonesia's App Store it has only 3 ratings with an average of 5.0. Play figures may undercount real users, but there's no way to know by how much.

Almost nobody outside has noticed it: no press coverage, zero mentions on X in 60 days, a TikTok account with 7 followers and 15 videos, individual videos with 78–511 views (11-06); Instagram posts with four or five likes.

Where the money comes from

Commission. The therapist recruiting page (11-06) says "earn up to 80% per order plus tips," "daily payouts to your bank account," and "no contract, stop anytime," meaning the platform takes at least 20% of each order. For a 60-minute massage at Rp 270k, the platform keeps roughly Rp 54k per order, about $3 (estimate).

On the technician side, they're also spending to acquire supply: the recruitment page offers the first 100 new technicians Rp 50k each as a sign-up bonus, paid only after they complete their first job. 11-06 shows 92 approved, with 8 spots left. So they're subsidizing both sides. A 3 USD commission per order has to cover user-side ads, the 3 USD refer-a-friend credit, and the technician recruitment ads. Order volume and repeat purchases aren't visible, so from the outside, there's no way to tell whether the math actually works.

Who it's competing with

Bali's model is nothing new:

CompetitorsWhat it isCompared with GlowGo
Happy Day(happy-day.io)On-demand massage and haircuts ordered via website plus WhatsApp, also operating in ThailandDirect rival. The official site claims 15,127 reviews and a 4.9 rating. 60-min Bali massage from Rp 350k, pricier than GlowGo, but no app download needed
Dozens of WhatsApp / IG home-spa operators (Purani, Mobile Spa Bali, Bali Home Massage, etc.)Single shops, 10–20 therapists eachThe real existing supply, often cheaper, ordered by chat
Klook, GetYourGuide, Airbnb Services“Home massage” sold as a product on travel platformsThe big tourist entry point, but not instant dispatch and no therapist choice
Dewata Wellness MassageA local team's Android appCompeting for search terms like “home massage bali” in the store, volume unknown
Pinhome (3.52M installs on Play), Sejasa (753k)Indonesian local home-services platforms that also offer home massageBahasa Indonesia, cheap (Pinhome massage from Rp 150k), not aimed at tourists
GoMassage(Gojek)Instant home massage that once made up ~90% of GoLife ordersShut down in Jul 2020 27. Not even Gojek kept this business going

Zooming out beyond Bali, this model has already scaled elsewhere: Vietnam and Thailand's Glow – Home Massage & Beauty launched in 2023, reached 389k installs on Play, and gained 7k in the last 14 days (11-06). Same playbook, roughly two orders of magnitude bigger than GlowGo. Cambodia, Thailand and Vietnam also have Ezspa (11k installs).

What it does well, and what it hasn't proven

It executes well on product and speed. From launch to 1.6 in three weeks, shipping 2.6: picking your own therapist, saving “My Glower” favorites with priority dispatch, iOS lock-screen countdown, room number entry, group bookings, gift credits, affiliate applications, therapist portfolios. A small team building a two-sided marketplace this complete would have been unlikely two years ago.

What it hasn't proven is whether demand sticks around. Install counts like these can be explained by ads plus offline events. There are no ratings on Play, and only 3 on iOS. Whether users come back after booking, and whether therapists keep taking jobs, decide if a matching platform survives. Right now there's no data on either.

If it were you

C: Worth learning from, not worth chasing. This is an offline business that needs people on the ground managing therapists every day. The app is the easy part. And the first wave of opportunity is taken: Bali has GlowGo and Happy Day, while Vietnam and Thailand have Glow with 389k installs.

  • Who it's for: someone living long-term in a tourist-heavy city where home massage is ordered via WhatsApp (Phuket, Chiang Mai, Da Nang, Nha Trang, Dubai, Tulum), who knows a few therapists or spa owners to seed supply, who will run Meta ads, and who is willing to spend lots of time handling lateness, no-shows and complaints.
  • Who it's not for: pure coders who aren't on the ground; anyone wanting a purely online product that doesn't touch fulfillment; anyone aiming to go head-to-head in Bali, Vietnam or Thailand.
  • How to do it: skip the app at first. Follow Happy Day's path with a web page plus WhatsApp ordering, partner with two or three existing home spas, and test how many bookings one neighborhood can handle in a week and how many customers rebook. Once volume is steady, build the app and copy what GlowGo has already done well: room number entry, cashless payment, live tracking, saved therapists. For commission, benchmark against its 20%.
  • How to acquire users: on the demand side, run short Meta videos targeted at tourists in the city, using a local version of GlowGo's pitch: no taxi, no queue, the therapist comes to your room. Put QR codes at hotel front desks, villa managers and beach clubs, and pay referral commissions. On the supply side, run Meta recruitment ads with the message “paid daily, set your own schedule, no contracts.”
  • Deadline: there's no hard cutoff, but you need to be running before the target city's tourist high season, which for most Southeast Asian places is December to March.
  • Signs you're wrong: ① GlowGo's Play installs hold above 200 a day without a new ad push, and real reviews start appearing in bulk. That would mean tourists really will download an app to book massages, so the web-plus-WhatsApp approach is too conservative. ② Vietnam's Glow expands into new cities like Phuket or Bali, which would mean a chain can swallow this business, and single-city opportunities get narrower for small teams. ③ GlowGo stops subsidizing recruitment after filling 100 therapist slots but keeps shipping updates, which would mean supply is easier to get than expected.

Why GlowGo: Beauty On-Demand (id.glowgo.customer) is working

Research date 2026-11-06. Data from our googleplay / appstore / metaads libraries, public web pages (Jina search and page extraction), TikHub and x-radar.

Bottom line

It hasn't actually worked yet. GlowGo is a Bali matching app for on-demand massage, nails and beauty, aimed at tourists and expat residents, copying the Urban Company / Uber model. It has 1,889 total installs worldwide. It reached #25 in the Indonesia Play “Beauty” free chart because the category has a very low bar: the #17 app on the same chart has only 379 installs. The biggest install wave (10-29 to 11-01, roughly 220–250 installs a day) most likely came from Meta app-install ads, plus offline QR events and referral rewards. Afterward it settled back to 35–80 installs a day. What's worth studying is execution speed (about 10 releases in three weeks) and a template for on-demand services on a tourist island, not its growth.

  • Charted only in Indonesia, and only on the BEAUTY free chart. Not on the grossing chart, and no ratings on Play.
  • How low the chart bar is: 11-06 The top 40 spots on Indonesia's BEAUTY free chart are mostly taken by selfie-camera tools (millions to tens of millions of installs). Local clinic apps squeeze into the middle too: Larissa Aesthetic Center has only 379 installs and ranks #17; Oriskin has 3,338 and ranks #39. Dozens to hundreds of installs a day is enough for the top 30, so “#25” says little.
  • iOS: App ID 6788587960, listed in the US store 2026-09-16. Our appstore library shows 0 ratings. The Indonesian App Store page shows 3 ratings averaging 5.0. The merchant app GlowGo Partner (iOS 6788331622,2026-08-31) also shows 0 ratings in our library.
  • Developer PT GlowGo App Asia publishes only this one customer app and one merchant app.

Bottom line: none of this is new. Tourist in-home massage in Bali has long been a mature offline business, and other Southeast Asian tourism countries already have app versions (Glow, Ezspa). GlowGo is one of the first in Bali to build a real "Uber-style app," but it isn't alone: Happy Day is a direct rival with far more reviews.

3. Growth tactics: where users come from

  1. Meta paid ads (confirmed)
    • GlowGo's Facebook page (page id 61567986745210) ran a Reels ad on 10-10 with an "Install now" button, captioned "Skip the traffic, not the spa," linking straight to the App Store. That's what a Meta app-install ad looks like.
    • On 11-03, a post recruiting therapists linked to utm_source=meta&utm_medium=paid&utm_campaign=partner_recruiting, showing supply-side recruiting is also bought with paid ads, targeting Ubud, Canggu, Seminyak, Uluwatu, and Sanur.
    • Our metaads library doesn't track this page, so we can't see the ad spend.
  2. Referral bonus (confirmed): an IG post on 10-10 says each friend invited earns a Rp 50,000 credit (about $3), usable on the first booking. The 2.0 version (10-26) adds "gift your GlowGo Credit to a friend."
  3. Affiliate and creator partnerships (confirmed in product, effect unknown): the 1.8 / 1.9 versions (10-21) launched "invited creator partnerships," and the 2.3 version (10-30) launched "apply to become a GlowGo affiliate" from within the account. We can't find any creator content about GlowGo yet.
  4. Offline QR-code "missions" and hotel scenarios (confirmed in product): the 2.2 version (10-28) says "Book at GlowGo missions by scanning a QR code" and "Choose your hotel room or area at checkout," and TikTok videos push beach and sunset massages. It's likely they set up stands at beaches, hotels, and beach clubs for QR-code booking. The installs starting 10-29 line up with the 2.2 release and the beach-massage videos, so offline events plus ads may have been pushed together (speculation).
  5. Owned content (very small): TikTok @glowgoid has only 7 followers and 15 videos, with 78–511 views per video (TikHub, 11-06). IG @glowgoid posts get 4–5 likes and no comments. On X, there were 0 mentions in 60 days (x-radar).
  6. Store search / SEO: the website glowgo.id has a landing page and a full price page that can show up for searches like "Bali home massage app," but it ranks behind Klook, Happy Day, and a pile of single-shop sites. We can't see how much traffic it gets from store search.

4. Why it took off (at this scale)

  • Ad buys matched to release cadence: about 10-29 installs from 11-01 to 900 were concentrated in 4 days, with only dozens per day before and after. That's the shape of one ad push or campaign, not organic word of mouth.
  • Low chart bar exaggerates the lift: in Indonesia's BEAUTY free chart, a few dozen installs a day is enough to reach the top 30, and that rank inflates the recall score.
  • The demand is real, but not on Play: Bali gets millions of foreign visitors a year, plus a large number of digital nomads, and in-home massage is a frequent purchase that people already book over WhatsApp. GlowGo is betting on moving that crowd into an app. Many of them use iPhones, and Apple doesn't publish download counts, so Play installs may badly understate actual users.
  • The product is actually operating: 2026-11-06 scraped glowgo.id/home and showed "55 Glowers online" (88 at recall time). Pricing is clear: a Bali massage at 60 minutes for Rp 270k, manicures from Rp 60k, and hand-and-foot packages from Rp 525k. The category is expanding into pet care and babysitting, and yoga, Pilates, and IV drips are marked "coming soon."

5. Differentiation

Compared with WhatsApp single shops and Klook single products, GlowGo's difference is that it's built as a "platform + instant matching":

  • Pick your own therapist, save favorites under "My Glower," and get priority dispatch;
  • Real-time map tracking and an iOS Live Activity countdown;
  • Cashless payment by card, QR code, or wallet (cash also accepted);
  • Enter a hotel room number when ordering, plus group and couples multi-person orders;
  • The widest range: the site says 200+ services, including massage, manicures, facials, men's grooming, hair, pet care, and babysitting.

Compared with Happy Day, it's cheaper (Rp 270k vs. Rp 350k) and has a wider range, but you have to download the app, and it has two orders of magnitude fewer reviews.

Did the differentiation drive its growth? No. Current install numbers can be explained by paid ads plus campaigns. Differentiation has to be proven by retention and repeat purchases, and we can't see that data: Play has no rating, and iOS has only 3 ratings.

6. How many people have seen it

  • Few people know about it yet: no media coverage, 0 mentions on X, single-digit engagement on TikTok / IG, and no public revenue.
  • Copycats: none yet. It is itself the Bali version of the Urban Company / Glow (Vietnam) model.
  • Israeli line mentioned in recall: glowgo-app.com is a Hebrew site for a same-named GlowGo doing in-home manicures, hair, and makeup. Its legal page cites Israeli accessibility standard 5568 and Israeli payment tool Bit, and mentions attributing customers to therapists through "the therapist's own promo link." Whether it's the same team or the same package as the Bali company is unverified: the two sites share a similar visual style and the "Glower / therapist comes to you" wording, but the legal page doesn't name the company.

7. What others can learn

  • A template for in-home services in travel or expat cities: places with lots of tourists, language barriers, and WhatsApp-first booking (Bali, Phuket, Da Nang, Chiang Mai, Dubai) can stand out with an English app offering "hotel room number + cashless + live tracking."
  • Buy both sides at once: use Meta ads to acquire users and recruit therapists together, with recruiting creative focused on "set your own schedule, no contract, daily payouts."
  • Offline QR-code missions: set up stands at beaches and hotels, let people book on the spot by scanning, and turn offline foot traffic straight into app orders.
  • Iteration speed in the AI era: about 1.6 versions shipped in three weeks (2.6 to 10), so a solo builder or small team can make a two-sided platform quite complete.

8. Still unclear

  • Actual iOS downloads and order volume (Apple doesn't publish them; tourists mostly use iPhones, so Play numbers may badly understate the total).
  • Source of the 10-29 install wave: ads, offline events, or both?
  • How much was spent on Meta ads and the cost per acquisition (the metaads library doesn't track this page).
  • Whether the Israeli site is run by the same team.
  • Commission rate and unit economics: no public data found on the platform's cut or therapist retention.
