Sarakku: TASMAC Price & Stock · Jay Siddik

A government liquor stock table just went public, and one person turned it into 5,400 web pages: Tamil Nadu liquor price app Sarakku

What it is A free app and website that checks the legal price of each bottle at Tamil Nadu's state-run liquor shops (TASMAC), and which of the 4,852 shops currently has stock.

Why it's taking off The government just published store-by-store stock data. The app got ahead of everyone by turning it into thousands of store pages, product pages, and news-driven articles. "TASMAC price list" and "TASMAC stock check" both rank #1 in search, and people arrive from search and then download the app.

CHow you could follow it Don't compete in Tamil Nadu; take the playbook of "government opens data → archive the history → programmatic SEO pages → app for location and alerts" to another state's newly opened liquor-retail data, or better, switch to a category that can make money (fuel, medicine, subsidized ration shops, and so on).

Grade C: the playbook is clear and few people know about it, so it's worth studying. But Tamil Nadu's search terms are already taken, other states have to wait for official data to open, liquor is almost impossible to advertise and hard to monetize, and the data could be shut off at any time. Copying it isn't a good deal. Few people know about this yet

In 2026 Aug 6, TASMAC, Tamil Nadu's state-run liquor monopoly, launched online ordering and for the first time put live stock from over 4,000 shops statewide online. An indie developer named Jay Siddik had an iPhone beta 18 days later and was on Google Play six weeks after that. By Nov 6, the free app, called Sarakku, had 11,294 installs on Play, almost all from Google searches for "TASMAC price list". It has made no money, but the approach is worth understanding.

What it is

Sarakku (Tamil slang for "liquor") is a tool for checking TASMAC liquor prices and shop stock. It has an app and a website, sarakku.in. In Tamil Nadu, TASMAC is the only legal retailer of liquor. Prices are uniform statewide and printed on the bottle, but "which nearby shop has the bottle I want" used to mean going there and asking.

It does a few direct things:

  • 1,500 products, with the statutory price for each bottle size (180 / 375 / 750 / 1000 ml), counter price with the ₹10 deposit added automatically, price per litre, and the gap versus nearby Puducherry;
  • stock at 4,852 shops, re-read from TASMAC's published figures every 30 minutes, labeled with the time of the reading, showing which nearby shops have stock;
  • alerts when a saved bottle is back in stock, a dry-day calendar with a reminder the night before, and one-tap anonymous reporting of "overcharging" (with a public count per shop);
  • a section called Pulse that uses stock differences to estimate how many bottles were sold statewide each night, clearly marked as an estimate.

It's in English and Tamil, needs no sign-up, and prices can be checked offline. It doesn't sell liquor, take orders, or collect money. Google Play lists no ads and no in-app purchases (Play listing, same every day from 10-29 to 11-06), and the website says "free, with no ads and no account needed".

The developer also has two other apps: Wattway, which aggregates EV charging stations in India, and Zodian, a Tamil-language astrology app. All three follow the same idea: find a high-frequency, opaque everyday task in one part of India and aggregate public data around it.

How it took off

The timeline was tight:

DateWhat happened

The first three weeks after launch brought only a few dozen installs a day (10-11 cumulative 1,088). Then 10-12 to 10-16 a wave hit, with 500 to 1,100 more a day, 10-16 to 4,547. Around 10-20 a second wave came. From 10-31 to 11-01 it was back to about 590 a day, right as 11-01 news broke about TASMAC price hikes and the ₹10 deposit being built into the sticker price. In the last 7 days it's +2,648, running 300 to 600 installs a day with no drop-off (Google Play installs, 11-06). In India it peaked at #60 on the Play Food & Drink Top Free chart (11-03), and is #86 on 11-06. The India iPhone store has 27 ratings, averaging 4.85.

I couldn't determine what drove the 10-12 wave.

Where users come from: search, almost entirely search

This is the most instructive part of the whole thing.

The sarakku.in sitemap lists 1,124 product pages, 4,244 shop pages, 28 articles, and a set of price category pages (11-06 real ones). Each shop page carries that shop's live stock and its update time. This is standard programmatic SEO: one dataset automatically grows thousands of searchable pages, and each one pitches the app.

The effect is clearly visible in Brave Search's India results for 11-06 (Google rankings weren't verified):

  • "TASMAC price list": sarakku.in ranks #1 and #2, with TASMAC's official site below it;
  • "TASMAC price list 2026": it accounts for 5 of the top 10 (the master list, plus the gin, whisky and brandy category pages);
  • "TASMAC stock check": sarakku.in is #1, and its Play page is #2;
  • "TASMAC dry days 2026": its article is #1.

The articles are all built on news events and long-tail terms: dry days, the 4-day shutdown of Chengalpattu shops during a by-election, TASMAC shops in malls, shops in Ooty and Kodaikanal, lists of 717 closed shops, the ₹10 deposit, and "how to use official online booking". The last one targets people searching "TASMAC online booking app": it tells them the official site has no app, then points them to this one.

Another set of articles tells stories from its own data. The September 1 article "₹140 a quarter bottle, ₹115 is tax" breaks down a 180 ml bottle of Old Chef brandy, the best-selling brand statewide: counter VAT of 220% plus 2%, bringing it to ₹96.5 a bottle; distillery excise of ₹18.9; together the two make up 82.4% of the price. One line reads: "TASMAC isn't a liquor shop with tax added; it's a tax counter that hands you a bottle as the receipt." The article on launch day reported an estimated 76.5 lakh (7.65M) bottles sold statewide the night before, with brandy at 71.3%. Numbers like these work both as search content and as the cheapest PR available.

Its robots.txt explicitly welcomes GPTBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot, and it publishes an llms.txt, competing for visibility in AI search.

Other channels are small: there's an Instagram account; two Reddit threads in the Tamil Nadu subreddit ask "is the Sarakku app reliable" (unclear whether the poster was the developer); nobody mentioned it on X for 60 days; no mainstream outlet has covered it. I saw no paid ads in the Meta ad library. Liquor is largely unadvertisable on Google and Meta anyway, and its traffic curve is smooth and follows the news, which fits search traffic.

tasmacnearme.comShop directories + maps + price lists"tasmac shop near me" #1, similar SEO approach, no live-stock app
A pile of old apps and price sitesStatic price lists, some frozen at 2011No stock data

In Tamil Nadu, it's the only native app that combines prices, per-shop live stock, shop finding and alerts.

Why it works

  1. Timing: the government put per-shop stock on the public web for the first time, and it shipped within six weeks.
  2. Demand: an estimated 700 million+ bottles sell every night nationwide. Prices are uniform, but overcharging is common, and nobody could tell you which shops actually have stock.
  3. Distribution: 5,400+ pages took the core search terms, and the website serves as the app's ad.
  4. The official gap: the official site is built for placing orders and requires login. Most people just want to check prices and see whether there's stock.

What really made it take off wasn't any single feature. It was turning newly public government data into an SEO website plus an app, before anyone else. The data is the timing, SEO is the distribution, and the features are retention.

Its weak spots

  • No money, and hard to make money: liquor can barely be advertised on Google Ads or Meta, and in-app ads are restricted too. The only options left are referrals to bars and restaurants and brand partnerships, all with compliance risk.
  • Its lifeline is in someone else's hands: all the data comes from TASMAC's public pages. If they shut them down or add a captcha, the stock feature stops.
  • Tamil Nadu is already taken: it ranks #1 for the core search terms, and a follower starting from scratch on SEO would struggle to catch up.

If it were you

The one-line verdict: don't try to take Tamil Nadu. What's worth borrowing is the playbook of "government opens data → scrape and archive it → programmatic SEO pages → native app for location and alerts", but liquor as a category doesn't pay.

Who it suits: people who can write scrapers and programmatic SEO, have local-language ability in an Indian state, and can accept building traffic first and figuring out monetization later. Or people who want a real traffic case study to build their portfolio.

Who it doesn't suit: anyone who needs income from this category within a few months, or anyone unwilling to take on liquor compliance risk.

How to do it:

  • Other states: other Indian states also run state liquor monopolies. Kerala's BEVCO piloted online booking with per-district stock listings 2021 years ago and said it would release a booking app 2025 years later (onmanorama 2021-08, New Indian Express 2025-08); how much stock data it publishes now is unverified. Karnataka's MSIL, Telangana and Andhra are also worth checking one by one. Whichever state opens up first is the next window, but the window halves the day the government builds its own app.
  • A different category is better: use the same playbook but look for data that a government or monopoly channel has just released, listed per shop and per product, and that people check every day. Examples: fuel prices, public hospital bed or drug stock, subsidized ration shops, charging stations (the author's own Wattway does this). Pick a category that can carry ads or charge a fee. That beats liquor by a wide margin.

How to get users: copy what it does. One page per shop and per product, with live numbers and an update time on each. Write event articles around local news (price revisions, closures, holidays). Write one or two shareable "where the money goes" pieces from your own data. Let AI crawlers in.

How early you need to be: if you're switching states, launch within a month or two of the target state opening its data. Once someone else has taken the search terms, it's too late. Sarakku went from data release to store listing in six weeks.

Signs you've misjudged it: the target state's data endpoints add a login or captcha, so you can't pull the data; the government quickly ships its own app; or after three months of work your search terms still don't rank in the top 3 and daily installs never take off, which would mean demand for "check prices and stock" there isn't as strong as it is in Tamil Nadu.

One line

Sarakku is a third-party "price list + shop stock" lookup tool (app + website) for TASMAC, Tamil Nadu's state-run liquor retailer, built by solo developer Jay Siddik. It took off because of a platform event: 2026-08-06 TASMAC launched official online booking and made each shop's stock public. The developer scrapes that public data every 30 minutes, stores history, and builds per-shop, per-brand, per-district lookups. Then 5,400 programmatic SEO pages and 28 data blog posts claim high-frequency searches like "TASMAC price list" and "TASMAC stock check". Users arrive mainly from Google search, not paid ads. It is fully free, with no ads and no in-app purchases, and isn't earning money yet.

1. Who it is and what it does

  • Developer Jay Siddik, contact [email protected] (googleplay library app table; Play developer page). The same email and developer name also ship two other apps: Wattway (India EV charging aggregator, wattway.app) and Zodian (Tamil astrology / horoscope matching). AppAgg lists 3 apps under this developer. The playbook is consistent: find an opaque, high-frequency need in one Indian region and aggregate public data around it.
  • Timeline (sarakku.in/blog/sarakku-app-launch, /about, AppInsider):
    • 08-24 iOS TestFlight beta opened; 08-30 to 09-01 first batch of data blog posts ("What Tamil Nadu actually drinks", "₹140 a quarter, ₹115 is tax", "rum belt", "Pondicherry price gap")
    • 09-19 Play open beta; 09-21 Play public launch; 09-26 App Store launch
    • 10-10 reached the top 100 of a Play chart (AppInsider); 11-02 Play installs passed 10k
  • Features: 1,502–1,528 products listed by bottle size (180/375/750/1000 ml) with statutory MRP, counter price after the ₹10 deposit, price per litre, and a Pondicherry price comparison; live stock for 4,852 shops (TASMAC's published stock read every 30 minutes, hourly overnight), nearest shop with stock; restock alerts; a day-before reminder on dry-day calendar; one-tap anonymous reports of over-MRP charges, with report counts shown per shop; a Pulse section estimating bottles sold per district each night from stock differences (labelled "est."). English and Tamil; no sign-up; prices viewable offline.
  • Data source (sarakku.in/about): prices come from TASMAC's official published price list, refreshed nightly; stock comes from the stock figures TASMAC publishes per shop. It doesn't sell alcohol, take bookings, or take payments.
  • Monetization: none. Play listing shows ad_supported=False and offers_iap=False (googleplay library app_snap, every day from 10-29 to 11-06). The about page says "Both are free, with no ads and no account needed". The recall card's "pure ad monetization" is wrong.

2. Growth data

  • Cumulative Play installs (AppstoreSpy estimate plus our observations; googleplay library app_day_ext / app_day):
    • 09-28 105 → 10-03 712 → 10-11 1,088 (dozens of installs a day in the first three weeks)
    • 10-12 to 10-16 first wave: 490–1,173 installs a day, 10-16 to 4,547
    • 10-20 to 10-22 second wave, about 400–600,10-25 to 7,170 a day
    • 10-31 to 11-01 about 590 a day (right when the 11-01 TASMAC price hike and the ₹10 deposit merged into MRP news hit), 11-06 to 11,294
    • Last 7 days: +2,648, 300–600 installs a day, no drop-off
  • Charts: India Play Food & Drink free chart #10-29 74 → #11-03 60 → #11-06 86 (chart_rank); charted in India only.
  • iOS: India store, 27 ratings, average 4.85 (iTunes lookup, 11-06). Play doesn't show a rating yet.
  • AppInsider estimates 500+ downloads a day across all platforms.

3. Where users came from (growth tactics)

  1. Google search / SEO (main channel, strong evidence)
    • The sitemap has 1,124 product pages + 4,244 shop pages + 28 blog posts + various price pages (sarakku.in/sitemap*.xml, 11-06 actual). Each page carries live stock and an update timestamp, a classic programmatic SEO setup.
    • Brave India search (11-06): "TASMAC price list" ranks #1 and #2 with sarakku.in, pushing TASMAC's official site below them. In the top 10 results for "TASMAC price list 2026", sarakku takes 5 (overall list, gin, whisky, brandy category pages). "TASMAC stock check" ranks #1 on sarakku.in, with its Play page at #2. "TASMAC dry days 2026" ranks #1 with its blog. "tasmac shop near me" ranks #4.
    • Content rides events and long-tail queries: dry days, by-election closures (Chengalpattu dry for 4 days), TASMAC shops in malls, Ooty and Kodaikanal shops, lists of 717 closed shops, the ₹10 deposit, and how online booking works. One post explains that official online booking has no app, which captures searches like "TASMAC online booking app" and sends readers to Sarakku's app.
    • robots.txt explicitly welcomes AI crawlers such as GPTBot, ClaudeBot, and PerplexityBot, and includes /llms.txt. It is deliberately pursuing visibility in AI search.
  2. Store search (likely, rank not verified): the title is literally "TASMAC Price & Stock". The description repeats "TASMAC price list 2026", "TASMAC stock check", "shop number search", and city names. Few competing tasmac apps show up on Play (only Holostik's official anti-counterfeit verification app, 10k+ installs, with different functionality).
  3. Event traffic: growth came in waves that match TASMAC news. 08-06 After the official online booking launch, media widely reported "you can now check stock". 11-01 Another wave of searches came around the price revision and deposit change. 10-12 The specific cause of that wave was not verified.
  4. Community / social (small): an Instagram account @sarakku.in (TASMAC Companion), with an introduction appearing on an Instagram hashtag aggregation page. Reddit r/TamilNadu and r/TamilNaduDiscussion each have one "Sarakku app legit?" post (visible in search snippets; the original posts were blocked from reading, and whether the developer posted them is unconfirmed). X (x-radar, 60 days): 0 posts. YouTube results are other liquor-review channels. TikTok is banned in India and was not checked.
  5. Paid ads: no sarakku or TASMAC advertiser in the metaads library. The library only tracks a watchlist, so absence doesn't prove there was no spend. The app doesn't earn money and its curve has a natural, flat shape, so paid acquisition is unlikely.
  6. Media: no mainstream outlet found covering it. Only app aggregator sites such as CNET Download, AppBrain, AppAgg, and AppInsider list it automatically.

Bottom line: In Tamil Nadu, Sarakku is the only native app that combines prices, live per-store stock, store finder and alerts. The government only offers web-based ordering, and the other third-party tools are static price lists or store directories.

5. Why it took off

  1. A platform event opened the data: 2026-08-06 TASMAC launched online liquor ordering and, for the first time, made live stock for 4,000 stores public (reported by ET, The Week, Moneycontrol 2026-08). Sarakku 08-24 opened TestFlight and 09-21 went live on the store only about six weeks later.
  2. High frequency, high volume, opaque information: Sarakku estimates the state sells 7.6M–8.2M bottles a night (Pulse, 09-21 and 11-05). Prices are uniform across stores, but overcharging is common (there's plenty of media and YouTube content on "TASMAC overcharging"). "Does this store have my bottle?" used to mean driving over to ask.
  3. SEO captured the core keywords: 5,400 multiple pages plus a data blog. "TASMAC price list" and "TASMAC stock check" both rank #1 on Brave, and every page funnels visitors to download the app. The growth curve is steady and follows the news, which is what search traffic looks like.
  4. The gap the government left open: official ordering is web-only, requires login, and can't compare prices or send alerts. Sarakku needs no sign-up, supports Tamil, and works without signal, catering to the large group who just want to check prices and availability and have no plan to order online.
  5. Well-polished product: misspellings still return results (bacrdi / kingfsher), the ₹10 bottle deposit is added to prices automatically, stock shows its timestamp, and each store alerts only once. iOS rating 4.85.

6. Differentiation

Versus the government: it doesn't take orders, it just gives you information, but it's faster, needs no login, and adds history, sales estimates and overcharging reports the government won't offer. Versus other third-party tools: it's the only native app with live per-store stock, and the website itself is the search entry point. What made it work wasn't any single feature. It was being first to turn freshly public government data into an SEO site plus an app. The data opening was the timing, SEO was the distribution, and the features are the retention.

7. How many people have seen it

Still little known: no media coverage, 0 discussion on X, no revenue (it doesn't charge). Only two Reddit threads asking "is this app legit?" and automatic listings on store aggregator sites. TASMAC Ledger and tasmacnearme are doing adjacent things, but nothing suggests they're copying it.

8. What to borrow

  • Watch for government or state-monopoly channels that suddenly open their data. As soon as it opens, capture it and keep it as history, turn it into long-tail pages by store and by product, then add a native app for local features (location, alerts, offline). India's state liquor monopolies (Kerala BEVCO, Karnataka MSIL, Telangana TSBCL, Andhra APSBCL) could all be copied this way if they open stock or ordering.
  • Turn estimated data (how much was drunk each night, which district loves rum) into shareable data stories. That works as SEO content and as the cheapest PR.
  • Welcome AI crawlers and publish an llms.txt to get surfaced in AI search.
  • Risks: the data depends entirely on TASMAC's public endpoints, so the whole thing stalls if they shut them off or add verification. Alcohol is largely barred from Google Ads and Meta, so monetization has to come from other routes (referrals to bars and restaurants, brand partnerships), and there's compliance risk.

9. Uncertain

  • The cause of the ~1,000 daily installs between 10-12 and 10-16 is unconfirmed (a Reddit post? an Instagram account reposting it? a news piece?).
  • Whether the two Reddit "legit?" posts came from users or the developer couldn't be verified, since the original posts aren't readable.
  • Actual Google rankings and click volume (as opposed to Brave) weren't verified, and neither was the Play Store search position.
  • Whether TASMAC Ledger and Sarakku are run by the same people is unproven. The two use very similar data methods (deriving sales from stock drops), but there's no evidence.
  • How the developer plans to make money, and whether TASMAC will block third-party scraping.
