Characters stop texting back and instead film a scene: IF Drama pushed into the US and UK entertainment top-grossing charts with 60k installs

What it is A branching-story character chat app: you type a line or pick an action, and the AI generates a video with dialogue and voice, with the character reacting to you on camera.

Why it took off It upgrades text-based character chat into a video for every turn. Using a "stop staring at the text box" comparison ad, it runs bulk paid acquisition on Meta. Each video is sold for coins (one 30-second clip costs roughly $2–8), and a small group of heavy users pays a lot.

AHow you could get in Don't copy it. Build the part it hasn't done well: a female-oriented genre or the Japanese market. Let people watch one clip free before paying, add weekly and monthly passes, and test with small Meta budgets using the same comparison-style short video creatives.

Grade A: a new format, few people know about it, monetization is proven, and the path to entry is clear. But it's a bet that per-video costs can come down and that your paid acquisition can pay back. Big players like Character.AI could also add this feature at any time. Still little known

A small Seoul company started by 5 people turned "AI character chat" into "you say a line, and the character acts it out as a video", sold clip by clip with coins, the most expensive coin pack at $299.99. Three months after launch it had only 62k installs on Google Play, yet it was on the entertainment top-grossing charts in the UK, US and Australia. Below: what it sells, where the traffic comes from, why the money is so good, what it hasn't done well, and where you could cut in.

A one-star review and the developer's reply the next day

In 2026 Sep 6, a user named Matt Thompson gave IF Drama Chat one star on Google Play: "No trial. You can't even see whether it works without paying first. Ridiculously expensive, scammers! And the app froze so badly I couldn't even delete my account." 38 people marked it helpful, and in Nov 6 the review is still among the ones shown by default on the Play listing.

The developer replied the next day: "We're a very small early-stage team working to lower the cost of AI video and fix these issues." Another review from August said the video "generates very slowly and fails around 5 seconds", and the developer replied "We're working nights, and over the next month we'll make real improvements."

Two months later, in Nov 5, the app had 62,020 installs on Play, up 22,305 over the last 7 days, ranking #120 on the UK entertainment top-grossing chart and #164 in the US (Google Play, 11-06). On iOS US it had 343 ratings averaging 4.7 stars (App Store, 11-06). The price hadn't changed. In Oct 24 an iOS user wrote: "The only complaint is the price. One 30-second video costs 20 coins, and it adds up fast."

What it is

A branching-story character chat app. The difference is in the reply format: you pick a suggested action or type your own "what I'm going to do", and the AI generates a cinematic video with dialogue, action and sound, with the character reacting on camera, then you decide the next step. The first line of the store page reads "YOUR WORDS BECOME VIDEO", followed by a very accurate line: "You don't only read the response. You watch it happen."

The genres are romance, mystery and secrets, rated 13+. The developer is AboveTech (어보브테크) from South Korea. It launched on Play in Aug 10 and on iOS in Sep 16. The Japan store has a localized name, "IF Drama:AI動画チャット".

Compared with other products, the difference is in the unit of each reply:

ProductWhat the reply isScale

IF DramaYou type freely and the character acts out a video on the spot62k+ (Play) plus iOS, charted on entertainment top-grossing in about 30 countries

Both "text roleplay" and "AI short drama" are crowded. The middle ground, a mobile product that generates a story video for every turn and actually takes money, is currently rare.

Where the users come from: Meta ads, with text-chat rivals as the villain in the creative

Its Facebook page "IF Drama Chat" is full of ad-style short videos, all titled "Start AI Video Chat." The copy runs the same play, mocking text chat first:

Still staring at text boxes? In IF Drama, characters show up on video… Try IF Drama on iPhone.

Another ad says "Stop settling for text-only AI character chats. Mizuki and Rin answer in video", and one link slug is literally "start-ai-video-chat-with-asian-girls"; an Instagram Reel reads "Stop AI chatting. This is insane." Third-party ad tracker Peekly shows about 59 of its ads running on Meta, across 5 countries (estimated, not verified). User feedback lines up too: an iOS review from Oct 4 opens with "I saw its ad on Instagram and decided to try it."

The install curve looks like paid acquisition too: flat for days, then one day jumps by thousands to ten thousand. Oct 8 +11,225, Oct 31 +9,401, Nov 2 +9,761, with the days in between at 0 (Google Play installs, third-party estimates and daily scrapes). Organic word of mouth doesn't grow in this shape. It looks more like batches of spend (inferred).

Beyond ads, there are only two other signs: on Reddit, the r/JanitorAI_Refuges subreddit, where Janitor AI "defectors" gather, has a post "Your choices turn into video scenes in IF Drama" written like the developer posted it; and the app runs in-app "complete tasks for free coins" (Play update notes 10-27). On TikTok I found no official account or creator content, X has had no mentions in nearly 60 days, and English media hasn't covered it. Very few people know about it.

Where the money comes from: a 30-second scene that sells for a few dollars

Coin packs listed on the App Store (11-06):

CoinsPricingper coin
50 (first purchase)$4.99$0.10
25$9.99$0.40
65$19.99$0.31
125$29.99$0.24
500$99.99$0.20
Coin pack$39.99 / $49.99 / $249.99—

Play lists $2.99–$299.99. Going by users' "30-second video for 20 coins," one scene sells for between $2 (first-purchase price) and $8 (smallest pack) (estimated). At public video-model API prices, generating 30 seconds of video with sound costs roughly one to a few dollars (estimated; depends on the model and clip length). Gross margin isn't fat, but it's positive, and users pay again for every extra plot step they push.

This is why 60k installs can chart in the US, UK, and Australian top-grossing lists: few people pay, but the ones who do pay heavily. Reviews almost unanimously say it's expensive: "Ridiculously expensive, and you have to write extremely detailed prompts or it misreads you and wastes a pile of coins" (10-27), "Expensive, but fun, you get what you pay for" (11-03), "Costs a lot, but worth it" (10-25). Nobody says it's not fun, everyone says it's pricey, and that's a good early signal.

Who built it

AboveTech was founded in Seoul in 2023 November. It started as a blockchain outsourcing shop and, after ChatGPT came out, shrank from 23 people to 5 and pivoted to AI. Its first two products were both in Korea: Zendi, an AI four-pillars tarot app that hit nearly ₩200M in monthly revenue within 6 months; and IF, a character chat themed on K-pop idols, launched in 2025 August. The company says IF reached #1 in App Store AI character chat within 4 days, using an "AI director" system to control plot pacing (byline.network, aitimes, 2025-09). In 2025 July it raised a seed round, with Delightroom, the maker of the Alarmy alarm clock, among the investors.

So IF Drama didn't start from zero: its plot-scripting came over from IF in Korea, and the ad money was raised. Anyone following this has to build both of those themselves.

Where it falls short

The complaints that keep recurring in reviews are the gaps left for latecomers:

  • Too expensive, and there's no monthly plan. Sep 10 a review: "If you launch an unlimited monthly subscription, I'll subscribe long-term and recommend it to everyone." October: "The cheapest coins are still $9.99. You need to fix this."
  • You can't try it without paying. That's the one-star review at the top. Now there's a half-price first purchase and coins for completing tasks, but the first impression has already stuck.
  • It doesn't follow instructions, and the camera is monotonous. "Spent about $20, most of my choices were ignored, the shots all look the same, and it always ends in a close-up for no reason" (iOS, 10-04).
  • It only serves one kind of user. The ads push "Asian female characters"; one female user wrote: "I'm supposed to fall for these AI men, so why does my character's visible hand look like a man's hand?" (iOS, 10-04). On the other side, some users say outright that it's "all porn" and want adult content "more explicit." A product like this is naturally pulled toward adult content, and app stores are very strict about that.
  • The ratings are padded. On Sep 26 a five-star review read: "I only gave five stars because they said I'd get 100 free coins." The gap between the iOS score of 4.7 and the Play score of 4.1 may partly come from this (inference).

If it were you

Verdict: A. An interactive plot where "every turn is a video" is still uncrowded and few people know it, and monetization is proven. But you're betting on two things: whether you can cut the cost of each video to under half its sale price, and whether your Meta creative can pull heavy text-chat users in the way its does.

Who it suits: a 2–4 person team, with someone who has run Meta or TikTok short-video ads and can calculate payback periods, and someone who can write plots and personas. You need tens of thousands of dollars you can lose on ads up front. It helps to know a group or language it hasn't seriously worked on.

Who it doesn't suit: people who only wire up model APIs and can't write stories. The users' complaints about "ignored choices" and "same shots" are plot-scripting problems, not model problems. Anyone without an ad budget who wants to rely on organic traffic, since it has none either. Anyone who wants to build adult content, because stores and payment processors will block you.

How to do it: don't copy it, go after what it does badly. The two clearest directions: ① Female-oriented: male characters, otome and romance-fantasy themes, letting users define who "I" am. Its ads and characters clearly aim at male users. ② Japanese: Japanese people already pay for otome games and visual novels, and it only has a Japanese name, with no Japanese-language ads in sight (Korea is its home turf, so stay out). On the product side: let new users watch a full scene free before paying; add a weekly or monthly card alongside coins (users are asking for it); use cheap models for short scenes (5–10 seconds) and expensive ones for key plot points, and cost out each turn separately.

How to get users: make comparison creative in its formula: on the left a text-chat box, on the right a character answering you on camera, one persona and one hook per ad. Start paid tests in places like the UK and Australia, where it has already shown people will pay, or in the language you've chosen. Test 20–30 creatives on a small budget, and only add spend to ones that pay back within 7 days (inferred). At the same time, post real scene clips in Character.AI and Janitor user communities on Reddit and Discord. These people are the most dissatisfied with text chat.

When to move: launch and start testing ads before the first quarter of 2027. Prelulu was just on Product Hunt in November and PING just listed in October, so this format is being noticed by more people. In six months the gap will probably be filled.

What would show you were wrong: ① Character.AI or Talkie makes "generate a video every turn" a feature anyone on a standard membership can use. Big companies have existing users, and the gap is gone. ② IF Drama's Play installs stop growing over the next month and it drops out of the top-grossing chart by 200. That would mean it stopped spending on ads, which means ads weren't paying back. ③ Video-model prices don't fall over three months, while "too expensive" stays the top complaint. That would mean the margins can't support paid acquisition. ④ The reverse: if you see a female-oriented or Japanese-language competitor start running ads on Meta continuously, the gap is real and you need to move fast.

IF Drama Chat: AI Video (io.abovetech.ifdrama) research report

Date: 2026-11-06 | Channel: Google Play (iOS id6797708554 also) | Developer: AboveTech Inc. (어보브테크, Seoul, Korea)

One line

An app for "character roleplay chat where characters reply to you in video": a user says a line or makes a choice, and the AI generates a cinematic clip of a few to a dozen-plus seconds, with the character responding on camera and the plot branching accordingly. It sells coins per video generation, with in-app purchases from $2.99 to $299.99.

Verdict

It got off the ground through category positioning plus Meta paid acquisition. The positioning upgrades "text character chat" to "every reply is a generated video," hitting the need of heavy text-RP users on Character.ai and Janitor to "actually see the character." The acquisition runs batches of comparison-style short videos on one Facebook page, with lines like "stop staring at text boxes." Revenue comes from coin purchases, and the high price tier ($299.99) suggests it's feeding on a small group of heavy spenders. The team is a funded small Korean company whose first two products already made monthly revenue in Korea. This is the first time it has taken the same "AI interactive content" playbook overseas, with video added. Almost nobody in the English-speaking world has written about it, so it's still largely unknown.

1. Data (from our databases)

  • Install curve (googleplay.app_day_ext, AppstoreSpy estimates): 2026-09-08 went from 624,09-19 to 8,345,10-04 to 15,137; 10-08 jumped by +11,225 in one day (26,382); 10-28 reached 39,715; since then our own tracking shows 10-31 49,116, 11-02 58,877, 11-05 62,020. In the last 7 days +22,305 (data card).
    • The curve is stepped: flat for days, then a single-day surge of thousands to ten thousand (10-05~10-07 a day in single digits, 10-08 +11k). This looks more like paid acquisition batches or channel campaigns than the smooth growth of organic word of mouth. Play lists the launch date as 2026-08-10, but real volume only took off in September.
  • Ratings: Play 312 reviews, average 4.1 (5 stars 66%, 1 stars 12%, per Peekly quoting store distribution); steady new reviews of 8–18 per day (app_day). iOS US store 339 reviews, average 4.69 (iTunes lookup, iOS listed 2026-09-16).
  • Play chart (chart_rank, 10-29~11-06): all in the ENTERTAINMENT category chart. Top Grossing: Australia 81–98, UK 118–167, US 164–192, Germany 164–200. Top Free: Singapore 100–170, Sweden 123–161, Netherlands, Australia 131–194. Charting on the US and UK entertainment Top Grossing with only 60k installs means each paying user is worth a lot.
  • iOS charts (appstore.app_profile): charted on entertainment Top Grossing in about 30 countries. Best ranks: Singapore 24 (overall Top Grossing 169), Israel 36, Egypt 53, Indonesia 81, Australia 83, UK 106, US 132, Japan 184 (localized name in Japan: “IF Drama:AI動画チャット”, 63 ratings).
  • Ad libraries: not in our metaads or tiktokads libraries (not on our tracking list, which doesn't mean it isn't advertising).

2. Growth tactics (evidence)

  1. Paid acquisition on Meta (Facebook/Instagram), mostly confirmed. It has a Facebook page, “IF Drama Chat” (page id 61592916998927), filled with ad-style short videos titled “Start AI Video Chat.” Sample copy: “Still staring at text boxes? In IF Drama, characters show up on video… Try IF Drama on iPhone.” (2026-09-21,1.8K views), “Stop settling for text-only AI character chats. Mizuki and Rin answer in video…”, and one titled “start-ai-video-chat-with-asian-girls.” An Instagram Reel reads “Stop AI chatting. This is insane. Say or type exactly what you want to happen…” A third-party site, Peekly, shows about 59 Meta ads running across 5 countries (Peekly's estimate, some data paywalled, unverified). The creative formula is contrasting it with text-based RP; some versions are split by platform (“on iPhone”), others by persona (Asian female characters).
  2. Seeding posts in AI roleplay communities, evidenced. On Reddit r/JanitorAI_Refuges (a hub for users who left Janitor AI) there's a post, “Your choices turn into video scenes in IF Drama,” written like one from the developer (body blocked by 403, only the summary was available). The targeting is precise: heavy users unhappy with existing text RP platforms.
  3. Store recommendations. In the App Store's “You might also like” it appears alongside AI character story apps like Fizzz, Pippa and Fictional, borrowing traffic from similar users (inferred, not quantified).
  4. Using events to drive retention and sharing. The latest update notes say “Add Game mission for Free Coins,” using missions to hand out coins and lower the bar before a first purchase.
  5. Channels not found: on TikTok, searching “IF Drama AI” turned up no official account or creator content (TikHub); on X, no posts mentioning it in the past 60 days (x-radar); no English-language media coverage.

3. Team and resources

  • AboveTech (어보브테크), founded in 2023 November, CEO 최주원, based in Seoul. It started as a blockchain outsourcing shop, cut from 23 people to 5 after ChatGPT arrived, and pivoted to AI (Threads post by @bizucafe).
  • Its earlier products: Zendi (젠디) (AI Saju/tarot consulting), which hit monthly revenue near ₩200M within 6 months of launch; the company site says its AI chat products have passed ₩150M in monthly revenue. IF (이프) (character chat themed on K-pop idol producers) launched in Korea 2025-08, and the company says it reached No. 1 in App Store AI character chat within 4 days of launch. It uses an “AI director / agent system” to control plot pacing (byline.network, aitimes 2025-09-02).
  • Funding: 2025-07 seed round, investors Kreit Ventures USA, GD Ventures, and the Seoul National University startup network angel club (wowtale). The company site later also listed modern technology investment and Delightroom (developer of the Alarmy alarm clock app).
  • IF Drama is the second-generation product of the “IF” brand going global with video added (site if.place, domain drama.if.place). Korean teams have experience with interactive plot-and-character content, and funding backs up early paid acquisition, so it's resource-driven, reusing a proven method.

Summary: both the “text RP” and “AI short drama” sides are crowded, but few mobile products generate video for every single chat turn. IF Drama is the one that got there early and is actually making money.

5. Why it works

  1. The user pain and timing line up. Text RP users on Character.ai/Janitor are already tired of the format (the Janitor exodus itself is the evidence); 2026 video model costs and speed have dropped far enough to sell per use.
  2. The pitch fits in one sentence, which makes good paid acquisition creative. “You say a line, the character answers you on video” is a natural Meta short-form ad. Setting it against text RP sharply targets heavy RP users.
  3. Per-use coin pricing matches video generation costs. Every video costs money, so it's sold as in-app coins with top-ups up to $299.99, letting a small group of “whales” carry revenue. That's how it gets to 81–167 on the Australian, UK and US entertainment Top Grossing charts on just 60k installs.
  4. Experienced, funded team. Its earlier products validated “AI interactive content + payments” in Korea, and seed funding lets it burn cash on paid acquisition. It ships updates quickly (Play is at 1.0.12, and the developer promises in reviews to cut costs and fix bugs).
  5. Weaknesses: early reviews focus on slow generation, videos stuttering after 5 seconds, no trial before signing up, and hard account deletion. Some users say they'd pay a monthly fee for unlimited generations, suggesting the current pricing model turns some people away.

VI. Differentiation

What sets it apart is that the unit of reply is a plot video segment: not text, not an avatar that just moves (Character.ai AvatarFX), not a fixed-face video call (Prelulu/Mel), and not pre-made episodes (Lumz, AI short dramas). This is one of the main reasons it's taking off, because the pitch and the ad creative are the same thing. But the differentiation is easy to copy: big players have video models (Character.ai already has AvatarFX). The moat is plot orchestration (the “AI director” system carried over from IF), character consistency and video cost control, none of which has been proven yet.

VII. How visible it is

  • English media, X and TikTok have no coverage or discussion of it; the only things are one Reddit post that looks like it came from the developer, plus automated pages on data sites like Peekly, Apptopia and AppBrain.
  • Korean media covered the company and its earlier Korean product IF, not IF Drama specifically.
  • No public revenue figures; only Peekly's estimate (part of the page numbers is blurred out and unreliable).
  • Bottom line: hardly anyone knows about it yet.

VIII. What to take from it

  • Contrasting the category's “old format” in ad creative (“Still staring at text boxes?”) to target the most dissatisfied heavy users in that category.
  • An expensive-to-generate AI product sold per use with coins, plus a high-priced tier, so even a small install base can reach Top Grossing.
  • Validate the content method at home first (IF in Korea), then take the new video format abroad, targeting high-ARPU regions like the US, UK, Australia and new markets, with a separate localization for Japan.
  • Using “complete tasks for free coins” to lower the bar before a first purchase.

9. What I'm still unsure about

  • Actual ad spend and ROI (Peekly's 59 live ads and number of countries targeted are unverified); whether it's running TikTok ads, I couldn't find out.
  • Whether the +11k on 10-08 came from paid ads, featured placement or KOLs is unclear.
  • Retention data, and per-video cost vs. coin price unit economics; whether the generation quality complaints from reviews have improved.
  • The Reddit post author's identity and engagement (blocked by 403).
