"The Moment I Saw When I Loved You": how a retro camera app rode one love line to No. 1 in South Korea in a red ocean

What it is: a retro film / CCD camera app from a small Korean team, ironpig. It has 14 virtual cameras that recreate the grain and color of old cameras.

Why it blew up Retro camera apps are trending. This one is named after a love line and sold with a story about building a camera for a girlfriend. Dozens of couples, moms and home-decor creators all pushed the same message, and a 990 won monthly price made impulse buys easy. It took off on iOS first, and after the Android version landed in September, it gained 36k installs in the following week.

BHow you could follow it: don't fight it in Korea, Taiwan or Japan. Go to countries it hasn't entered, name the app with a local-language love line, and batch-recruit creators across different niches using a standard script. Price it like its low subscription plus a one-time single-camera purchase, but make clear which is monthly and which is one-time.

Grade B: the playbook is clear, there is no technical barrier, and almost nobody in product circles knows about it. It can be copied to other countries. But the category is a red ocean, its revenue looks small, and whether ultra-low ticket prices can sustain paid acquisition is unproven. The markets most like Korea, Taiwan and Japan, it has already entered. It's circulating in niche circles

A five- or six-person company in Seoul took a retro film camera that is functionally indistinguishable from dozens of similar apps, gave it a poetic name, paired it with the story of "a camera the developer made to photograph his girlfriend," handed that to a steady stream of Instagram creators to retell, and caught impulse buyers with a 990 won (about $0.7) monthly price. It ranks in the top two of Korea's iOS and Google Play photography free charts. What's worth learning is the selling method, not the camera. What you can follow is taking it to other countries.

The story from one reel

In Aug 2026 17, Korean Instagram creator 장광남 posted a reel that opened with "a retro camera app that hit No. 1 on the App Store a month after launch." Then came a story:

A developer who collects vintage cameras spent several days and nights building filters so he could capture his beloved girlfriend exactly as she is… and finally fit the cutest version of her, as he saw her, into the viewfinder.

The reel was co-posted with the app's official account @when.i.loveyou. Later, a home and parenting account called "봄날의 홈" (Spring Day Home) posted that it had "recently become obsessed with an app," retelling the same story almost word for word, then linking it to its own kids: "When I took family photos of the kids, the photos were full of love too." After that, more and more posts tagged #광고 (ad) appeared, some numbered "54/100," looking like a series one person would post 100 times.

The same story, told from a photography account to a couples account to a mom account. That is how this app took off.

What it is

The app name is the line itself: "내가 당신을 사랑할 때 보이는 순간들" (The Moments I See When I Love You). Users abbreviate it to "내당사순." Inside are 14 virtual retro cameras, with the grain and tones of film and CCD compact cameras, for both photos and video. The store description has three paragraphs. The first line is "Record everyday life with the feel of retro film." The third makes the point: "Remember the people you love, the streets, travels and daily life warmer with 14 emotional camera filters."

It's made by ironpig (아이언피그), founded in 2024 in Seoul's Yeonnam-dong with five to seven people. They previously built AI psychological counseling and AI dating counseling (thevc.kr, company site). In other words, this isn't a photography company. It's a company that understands the topic of romance.

The iOS version launched in Jun 2026 29, and the Android version only arrived in Sep 7.

Two points need clarifying. First, part of the Android surge is iOS pent-up demand. iOS reviews kept asking "please release an Android version" and "my friends with Galaxy phones are jealous" (people were still writing this in October, showing many didn't know it had already launched). The first Play reviews after launch said, "It was great on my iPhone, it's a shame there was no Android version until now, thank you." Second, its revenue isn't large. On Play it sits in the low teens of the Photography Top Grossing chart, it didn't chart on iOS Korea Top Grossing, revenue is undisclosed, and I estimate monthly revenue under tens of thousands of dollars (inference).

Why this one and not another retro camera

Bottom line first: it wins on distribution, not on category.

In 2026, Korea was in a "필카, 디카" (film camera, digital camera) craze, with film and CCD compact cameras. A Sep 20 Naver blog post put it plainly: "Film cameras and digital compacts have been trending lately." There was no shortage of competitors in that wave. Naver's SNOW launched a 101cam in Jul 10, 11 days ahead of it. There were the veteran Dazz Cam, the Korean-made filmhwa (11,584 ratings), indie developer Oldi, and Berryfilm, which had built-in traffic from a blogger with 600k followers who made filters. Then there were iY2K and 롤리즈, which launched in August and September. In Nov 6, it ranked #2 in Korea's iOS photography free chart, while the big-company 101cam was at #4.

Good-looking filters are the entry ticket, not the differentiator. Comments like "the colors are so pretty" show up often, but others say "the filters are all about the same" and "there are plenty of free film camera apps, why bother." What really set it apart were three things, all of which made creator posts convert better:

  1. The name is the copy. Among a crowd of tools named xxCam, a love line alone gets talked about. In Aug 25, someone on DCinside's digital photo board posted: "The filter is called 'The Moment I Saw When I Loved You' lol."
  2. It sells "photographing the person you love," not camera specs. That let it target audiences of couples, moms and home creators, not just photography hobbyists. The parenting account above is an example.
  3. The price is low enough not to think about. Creator posts uniformly say "990 won for 14 cameras" or "lifetime pass 1,300 won." A Play review: "Saw it on Instagram and installed it, then paid right away when I saw the lifetime 1,300 promo." An iOS review: "I usually don't trust ads, but this one looked good so I installed it, and it really is good."

Besides creators, Play reviews include "saw it in an ad, got curious and installed it," suggesting it is also running Meta feed ads (inference; how much is unknown). The official account @when.i.loveyou has only about two thousand followers, so its traffic clearly doesn't come from its own account.

Where the money comes from, and the cost it's already paying

Monetization has three tiers: a free daily limit of 5 photos; a low-price tier of 990 or 1,300 won that pulls people in; and above that, a one-time purchase of 13,900 won (about $10) per camera, listed in the store at $0.99–$9.99 per item.

The problem is the word "lifetime." From mid-October to early November, nearly all iOS Korea negative reviews said the same thing:

"I only paid because it said lifetime for 990 won, and it turned out to be 990 per month." (10-22) "The 990 won promo sounds like a limited-time offer, but it's always running… 990 isn't a one-time payment for life, it's a 990 monthly subscription." (10-29) "There's no cancel button in the app, only an option to email the admin." (11-04) "I paid 13,900 for lifetime access, and there's still a daily photo limit." (10-17)

Some people even saw 1,300 when a friend recommended it and 990 when they looked, and couldn't tell the difference. Even so, the iOS average rating is still 4.84, probably because the amounts are only a few hundred won, and most people just grumble and move on (inference). But this is a landmine. If App Store review or Korea's consumer protection agency decides to look closely one day, this "lifetime" messaging will have to change, and nobody knows how much low-price conversion will drop.

Already moving to Taiwan and Japan

That shows two things: the playbook can be copied across languages, and in Taiwan and Japan, the markets most like Korea, it has already gone in itself.

How many people know about it

It has broken out among Korean consumers, but almost nobody in product circles is talking about it. Revenue isn't public, there's no media coverage, and X had zero discussion in the past 60 days. For anyone who wants to follow, that's good news.

If it were you

One-line verdict: worth testing, but copy the selling method, not the camera. Don't go head-to-head with it in Korea, Taiwan or Japan. Get into countries it hasn't reached yet first.

Who it suits: 1–3 people, with one person who has already found creators and negotiated prices on Instagram / TikTok in the target country, ideally a native speaker. The other should be able to tune filters until they look like the real camera took the shot. One user praised exactly that in reviews: "It's not one of those apps that puts a fake retro film layer over the camera. It really looks like it was shot on that camera" (10-15).

Who it doesn't suit: anyone counting on organic app store search to bring in users (this category has dozens of competitors in every major market, and organic traffic won't reach you); people who can only write code and won't pay to find creators; and anyone who wants to launch in Korea, Taiwan or Japan (it and SNOW are already there).

How to do it:

  • Pick the country first: check the target country's App Store / Google Play Photo free chart and look at the top 10 for vintage camera apps, and whether any are localized. Southeast Asia (Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia), Latin America, and the Middle East are worth a look as starting points; which of these are actually empty is not verified in this piece.
  • Write the name as a love line in the local language, not xxCam. The story should be real and short enough that a creator can repeat it word for word.
  • 10–15 cameras is enough; add one a month to give people a reason to come back.
  • Copy its pricing structure: a few free shots per day, a very cheap subscription to pull people in, and a one-time purchase to recover the cost. But make clear whether it's monthly or one-time, and put a cancel option in the app. Don't copy any of its bad reviews.

How to get users: one standard script (story + price hook + "photos already taken with it") sent to dozens of creators across niches: couples, moms, home decor, travel, not just photography accounts. Co-post with the official account so people can click through to the profile. At the same time, run Meta feed ads using the best-converting clips from creator posts. Seed 20–30 creators on a small budget in one country first, see which niche has the lowest install cost, then scale up (inference).

Timing: launch by mid-December 2026, to catch the Christmas and New Year window and 2027 February 14 Valentine's Day. A camera for "photographing the person you love" has a natural peak in February.

Signs that would mean you read it wrong:

  1. By mid-December, it has dropped out of the top 10 in the Korea Google Play Photo free chart and out of the top 200 in the overall apps chart, suggesting the vintage trend is fading, or that creator-driven launches alone can't hold retention.
  2. SNOW or a 101cam clone has shipped a localized version in your chosen country and entered the top 10 of the Photo free chart, so the position is already taken.
  3. After you seed the first batch of creators in the target country, the cost to acquire each paying user exceeds 3 months of subscription revenue. A price point that low can't carry paid acquisition.
  4. Apple or Korean regulators start cracking down on misleading "lifetime" pricing, so the low-price hook has to be used sparingly.

One line

A small Korean team's "retro film / CCD camera filter" app, launched on iOS first (2026-06-29) and then on Android (Play 2026-09-07). It uses a long, romantic name and a "developer built a camera to shoot his girlfriend" story, scales through paid Instagram creators (lots of #광고) and feed ads, and converts with an ultra-low first price of 990 KRW/month or 1,300 KRW lifetime. Both platforms hit the top of Korea's photography free charts at the same time.

The 11 other countries' Play Photography Top Grossing rank 197–200 are noise from small-country aggregate charts, not a signal. Play install curves aren't smooth (some days show 0 growth, one day +16k); that's due to how Google updates install counts, so the 7-day total is more reliable.

1. Why it took off

Why users are showing up now

  • Korea's "필카/디카" (film camera / CCD digicam) retro trend is catching on. A Naver blog from 2026-09-20 says: "요즘은 필카랑 디카가 유행이다" (film and digicams are popular these days): m.blog.naver.com/mukborim/224417834752. In the same period, a batch of new retro camera apps appeared on the Korea iOS Photography chart (see competitors), so this is a trend the market is chasing, not a need it created.
  • The Android version is catch-up: the iOS version came out in June, Play in September. A Play review says: "아이폰에서 잘 사용했었는데 안드로이드는 없어서 아쉬웠었는데 감사합니다" (I used it well on iPhone and was sad there was no Android version, thank you). The Play surge is word of mouth from iOS spilling over.

Where the growth comes from (growth tactics, with evidence)

  1. Paid Instagram creator seeding (confirmed). Multiple posts are clearly labeled "광고" (ad):
    • www.instagram.com/p/Ddc42pXmhE5/, www.instagram.com/reel/De20lTMyJHl/ ("54/100 #광고 이번 촬영은 '내가 당신을 사랑할 때 보이는 순간들'...")
    • Creator 장광남(jangwangnam)2026-08-17's reel: "Vintage camera app that hit #1 on the App Store 1 months after launch" — www.instagram.com/reel/DcInanxxEnO/
    • Home/parenting account 「봄날의 홈」: www.instagram.com/p/De9J19smFEs/. These posts use the same copy: "A developer who collected classic cameras as a hobby wanted to capture his beloved girlfriend exactly as she looked in that moment...", plus the price hook "990 won for 14 cameras / lifetime pass 1,300 won". This is scripted creator seeding, and it isn't limited to photography accounts: it covers parenting, home, couple, and lifestyle accounts.
    • The ID "54/100" suggests some creators are running a series of 100 posts; the specific collaboration terms are unverified.
  2. Instagram/Meta 信息流广告(高度可能)。
  3. Official account: @when.i.loveyou, only about 2K followers and 22 posts (Instagram page summary via Jina). The traffic mostly doesn't come from its own account but from influencers and ads.
  5. Organic word of mouth / UGC: DCinside digital photo forum 2026-08-25 "필터이름이 내가당신을사랑할때보이는순간들ㅋㅋ" (842 views); TikTok has discovery-page posts such as "내가 당신을 사랑할때 보이는 순간들 앱 990원 이벤트" (TikTok discovery post counts come from generic keywords and aren't reliable).
  6. In-store: a monthly "selected logo" that can be used as the icon (1.1.16 update note: "2026년 11월 선정 로고가 도착했어요"), and new filters each month. These are retention/re-engagement levers. On X (x-radar, 60 days) there's zero discussion.

Why people would pay

  • Ultra-low first-purchase price: monthly pass 990 won (about $0.7), "lifetime" 1,300 won (promotional price for a limited time). A review: "990원이라 사용도 해보기 전에 결제 해봅니다" (paid for it before even trying it, since it's only 990 won).
  • Tight free quota: you can only shoot 5 photos a day (user post on IG: "하루에 5장만 가능하렸다"), which pushes people to pay.
  • High-priced follow-up SKUs: some users paid 13,900 won and only unlocked one camera ("13900원 결제한건데 한카메라만 적용이라니요"). In short: low-price hook + single-camera one-time purchase + subscription mix, with in-app purchases of $0.99–$9.99. The Play Korea photography Top Grossing chart holds steady at #15–#19, so there's real revenue, though not top-tier.
  • Cost: The pricing model is a mess and is drawing a flood of bad reviews. Korean users write things like "I paid for the lifetime unlock, why is a usage limit showing up?", "I thought one purchase meant no subscription, but it's a subscription", and "Why do some people pay 1,300 won and others 990 won?" Refund emails go unanswered, and there are crashes and lag (googleplay.review sample of 10-16 to 10-31). The Play listing rating was not retrieved (ratings empty).

Verdict: it's not that there are no competitors, it's a red ocean. It ranked #2 on the iOS Korea photography free chart, ahead of 101cam, which SNOW launched around the same time. It wins on distribution, not on an empty category.

3. What's the differentiation

  1. Name and story: a long sentence as the app name ("내가 당신을 사랑할 때 보이는 순간들", which users shorten themselves to "내당사순") plus the founder story of "a camera made for taking photos of my girlfriend." Among a pile of tools called xxCam, this stands out. It's naturally easy for influencers to retell and fits couple and family scenes. Some people even posted on DCinside complaining about the name, and many reviewers say "이름이 이쁘다" (the name is pretty).
  2. Emotional scenes over gear specs: the selling point is "photographing the person you love," which widens the target from photography hobbyists to couples, parents of young children, and home-lifestyle creators (the influencer list includes parenting and home accounts).
  3. Price hook: 990 won for every camera for a month, a very low bar to entry, then recovered through single-camera one-time purchases and subscriptions.
  4. A new camera every month + a new logo every month: builds a sense of ongoing updates.

Among these differentiators, items 1, 2 and 3 are directly tied to how it performed. They all essentially serve to make influencer content convert better. The filters' quality ("색감이 너무 이뻐요" comes up often in reviews) is a necessary condition but not what sets it apart, since competitors' filters are just as good.

4. How many people have seen it

  • Revenue is not public, no media coverage found, zero discussion on X, and no public data from TrustMRR-style sources.
  • But on Korean Instagram it's already a hit camera app pushed by lots of influencers, and it sits in the top 2 of both platforms' Korea photography charts. Taiwan has already started copying it.
  • Verdict: it's being talked about in small circles. It has broken out among Korean consumers, but almost nobody in the going-global, developer or investor circles is discussing it.
  • Copycats: similar new products 101cam (SNOW, 2026-07-10), iY2K (2026-08-21), and 롤리즈 (2026-09-10) launched after it. Whether they were directly influenced by it is unverified; the category itself is hot.

5. Takeaways

  • The "emotional naming + founder story" playbook for utility apps: the same story copy is pushed to dozens or hundreds of influencers across different verticals (including parenting and home), with far wider reach than pure photography accounts.
  • An ultra-low first purchase of 990 won drives impulse payments, paired with a strong "5 free photos a day" limit, then recovered through high-priced SKUs. But subscriptions and one-time purchases have to be explained clearly, or bad reviews and refunds pile up (it's paying that price right now).
  • Cross-region copying: literal name translations (Chinese, Japanese) keep the emotional hook, and the influencer playbook is copied into Taiwan and Japan, markets with similar aesthetic taste.
  • A small team (5–7 people, started as an AI consulting shop) switched to consumer tools and reached the top of both platforms within half a year, showing the playbook matters more than the tech.

6. Still unclear

  • Specific spend and ROI of influencer seeding and feed ads; we don't track this app in the Meta ad library.
  • Real revenue: Play photography Top Grossing at #15–#19; not on the iOS Korea Top Grossing chart (grossing_rank_now empty in the appstore library), so revenue may not be high. Whether the low first-purchase price converts into long-term subscriptions is unclear.
  • It is unverified whether "1 on the App Store within 1 months of launch" refers to the overall chart or the photography category (our library starts from 10-28, with a historical best of #11 overall free).
  • Its Play overall chart rank is sliding, from #33 to #77, so whether the heat can last is unclear. Whether lag and payment bugs are hurting retention is also unclear.
  • Whether the Taiwan/Japan seeding is paid influencers (it looks that way) has not been verified post by post.
