Synthetiq Player · Synthetiq

A college student, a "bring-nothing" player, and one TikTok account: Synthetiq Player got 64k installs in two months

What it is A player that calls itself a "personal media library"; users add third-party module sources themselves, and in practice it's used to watch anime, shows, and manga for free. It's a one-time purchase at $8.99.

Why it took off It brought the sideloading crowd's "empty shell + users add their own sources" anime-watching model into the Play Store under a compliant-sounding label. The creator also answered each comment with a video on TikTok, and a few videos with 16–460k views directly drove install spikes.

BHow you could follow Don't copy the anime shell. Learn its acquisition: appear on camera yourself, answer every "won't install" question with a "Replying to" video, and run several apps to spread risk. Or follow by building the good Android version it didn't get to, or move to content with lower gray-area risk.

B grade: the playbook is clear and few people know about it, and the comments still show unmet Android demand. But the core relies on review not catching the issue, so it could be pulled at any time, one-time revenue is thin, and installs are already slowing. Being talked about in small circles

A computer science undergrad at Brunel University in the UK built a "personal media library" app with not a single source on the store page. After installing it, users paste a module URL from GitHub themselves and get anime, films, and manga for free. The Google Play version launched in Aug 27, and by Nov 6 it had 64,360 installs. Nearly all its users came from the creator's own TikTok. Below: what it actually is, why it could get into the store, where the traffic came from, what you can follow, and what not to follow.

A video that answered a comment

On 2026 14 Sep, TikTok user @anngy.d.jr1 asked in the comments how to actually use Aroki. The account @synthetiq_hq replied with a video titled "how to get aroki to work", walking through how to paste the module address in. As of 11-06 the video has 369k views and 1,022 comments. The most-liked comment is "I love you bro I really appreciate it" (241 likes), and the fourth-most-liked is "Make a android version" (120 likes). Others asked "Does it work in Nigeria also", and someone posted a screenshot saying "Just finished the released black clover…. I love this".

That same week, Synthetiq Player on Google Play gained about 9-11 installs, from 9-15 to 6,800.

The person behind the videos is Khubaib Shaikh, and the studio is Synthetiq (synthetiq.uk). Aroki is his other app; it's the same thing as Synthetiq Player in a different shell.

What it actually is

The store description reads: "Neatly organize your personal videos, photos, and reading into one clean library… You can also connect your own server that you own or control." It doesn't mention anime at all.

Actual usage is different: after installing, go to Settings → Media & Sources → Advanced → Manually add server, then paste github.com/kas021/Synthetiq-Modules (47 stars, still updated as of 11-05). It contains "modules," each connecting to a third-party source. Paste it, and the home screen fills with anime, shows, and manga. Third-party YouTube tutorials are blunter: "first download the app, then go to Discord for modules, the Android APK, and the PC version."

In other words, the app itself is an empty shell, and the content is filled in from places you can't see on the store (GitHub, Discord). The "shell + users add their own sources" model wasn't invented by this app: on Android, Cloudstream (11,167 stars on GitHub) and Aniyomi (7,873 stars) have run it for years, but only as sideloaded APKs; on iOS, early players Sora and Sulfur were on the App Store, then came and went. What Synthetiq did was bring the sideloading crowd's approach into an official store, wrapped in the language of a "personal media library."

Monetization is a one-time Plus in-app purchase (more storage, multiple devices, longer history). It changed from 11-05 to $5.99,11-06 and then to $8.99. There's no subscription, it hasn't charted on any bestseller list, and revenue isn't public.

In September it grew 6,000–7,000 per week, in October 4,000–5,000 per week, and in the first 7 days of November it grew only 5,735, slowing down.

The spike days line up with his viral videos: 9-14, a tutorial with 369k views; 10-04 "Let me put you on" with 160k views, Play installs +5,075 that day; 10-20 "synthetiq downloads beta is out" with 253k views, +3,300 over the following two days. Earlier, the iOS version went up on the App Store in January (39 US ratings, 4.82 stars); in Aug 17, a video linking to the module library got 458k views and built the first audience.

The account has 11-06 followers and 18,295 260 videos. The playbook is fixed: titles like "Free anime app on iOS" or "V9 beta is out," then lots of "Replying to @someone": won't install, source is down, AirPlay won't cast, one video per problem. The comments double as customer support and a topic-picking meeting.

On the charts it only shows up in the Philippines (Video Players free chart #170) and South Africa (#198); the iOS version ranks 100–175 in category charts in Nigeria, Ghana, Jamaica, and Kenya. Users are in emerging markets and very spread out. The author self-reports "around 30,000 active users" on his GitHub profile, without saying whether that's combined across platforms.

Two signals are worth noting:

  • Late October the videos changed format. From the creator appearing on camera to answer comments, it became 2–3 templated "Synthetiq Books manga app tour" videos per day, each with only 600–1,500 views, looking batch-made. Play installs slowed at the same time.
  • Many Android users don't know there is an Android version. The most-liked comment under the 10-20 video was "you guys don't pity android users" (166 likes), and 11-02 someone asked "can it work for android bro?"; another Android user said "buffering time is INSANE." The creator's videos are almost all about iOS, so the 64k Play installs were a side benefit.

Why it was able to take off

  1. Demand is there: young viewers in emerging markets want anime for free, and the comments ask for specific shows: Black Clover season 2, Re:Zero season 4, is there a German dub. Someone writes "I paid £40 for a year of Crunchyroll," and the replies are mostly "na free."
  2. A shell that's actually in the store: on Android, most of the top apps in this category have to be sideloaded. This one installs straight from Play in one tap. Pirate apps on Play named "Anime TV" have reached 1.26M installs, but they ship with built-in sources and get taken down easily. Synthetiq ships with no sources at all, so nothing on the page is an obvious problem.
  3. The founder answers every question on TikTok: a few videos with 16–460k views line up with install spikes. Turn "won't install" drop-off points into content.
  4. One person, a row of apps: Synthetiq Player, Aroki, Synthetiq Books (manga), Synthetiq Music. The same stack split into several apps that feed each other traffic, so if one gets delisted there are others.

The differentiation isn't the player itself (features are close to Sora-style apps). It's "a store-legal wrapper story" plus "the author's own TikTok." Both are fragile. The first depends on reviewers not looking closely; the second is already declining.

I found nothing built to copy it directly. It had no mentions on X in 90 days, no press coverage, and is known mainly within a small circle of anime TikTok.

If it were you

B. There's a practical playbook to learn here, but the part you could copy outright (stuffing an anime-tracking shell into a store) has a short lifespan and thin money.

The takeaway: what's valuable isn't "shell + modules" but the TikTok acquisition: the author on camera, replying to comments with videos, plus spreading risk across a row of apps run by one person. Those two things can be applied to other products.

Who it suits: one or two people willing to appear on camera and make videos replying to comments every day; people who understand a niche's pain points (manga, light novels, minority-language shows, audiobooks, IPTV-style content where users find their own sources); people who can accept rebuilding the shell at any time.

Who it doesn't suit: anyone wanting a stable business with public revenue; anyone who cares about copyright and legal risk (this kind of app typically draws complaints and takedowns, and the similar app Sora comes and goes on the App Store); anyone counting on organic store traffic (it only shows up in the top 170 of the video-player category charts in two countries on Play).

How to do it:

  • The most direct gap is in its own comment section: Android users are asking for a good Android version, and the author hasn't gotten to it. But Android already has Cloudstream and Aniyomi. What you'd be competing on is "installable from Play plus someone teaching it on TikTok," not features.
  • A safer way to follow is to change the content: the same "general reader / player + user imports their own" model, applied to legal or low-risk content (public domain books, podcasts, users' own NAS or cloud drives, minority-language subtitles). Monetise with a one-time purchase like it does, at $5–9.

How to get users: copy its early playbook. Appear on camera, title videos "New free XX app on iOS / Android," and make a "Replying to" video for every "won't install" comment. Put tutorials and resources on GitHub or Discord, and use the store only for installs. Don't copy the templated bulk videos it started posting after late October; the data says those stopped working.

Timing: there's no clear seasonal window, but for this kind of play the window depends on when platforms tighten review, and earlier is better. To follow it, you'd know within 3 months whether TikTok can carry it. It was at 64k two months after launch.

What would mean you read it wrong:

  • If Synthetiq Player gets pulled from Google Play, or Aroki and Books disappear from the App Store one after another, the "clean shell" route has been noticed. Don't take it.
  • Conversely, if its weekly installs climb back above 6,000 after November, or the author publishes real revenue, one-time purchases are collecting money in emerging markets too, and it's worth following more seriously.
  • If you post 30+ reply-to-comment videos in its style and none pass 50k views, its hits depended on the "free anime" theme itself, and changing the content won't carry it.

Why Synthetiq Player (Google Play: k.Synthetiq.Player) got traction

Research date 2026-11-06. Data comes from our googleplay / appstore databases, TikHub (TikTok), the GitHub API, iTunes lookup, and Jina web reads. Unverified items are marked.

One line

The store description says it's a "personal video/photo library + connect your own media server," but in practice it's an aggregator player that uses "modules" (third-party source plugins) to track, watch, and read anime, shows, and manga. The developer is Khubaib Shaikh, a computer science undergraduate at Brunel University in the UK (studio Synthetiq, synthetiq.uk). Nearly all users come from his own TikTok account @synthetiq_hq: a constant stream of short videos like "new free anime app on iOS," "how to install modules," and "V9 beta is out," which send people to a module library on Discord / GitHub. The Play version has been listed for 2026-08-27 and reached 64k installs in just over two months.

1. Data

  • Install curve (googleplay database app_day_ext, AppstoreSpy estimates; the 10-29 onward figures are our own scrapes): 9-02 3,360 → 9-15 14,179 → 10-01 29,719 → 10-15 48,569 → 11-01 61,017 → 11-06 64,360.
    • September gained roughly 6–7k per week, October roughly 4–5k per week, and in the first 7 days of November it only gained 5,735 (data column installs_gain_7d). It's slowing down.
    • The jumps line up with TikTok hits: 9-14 the "how to get aroki to work" video (369K views) → 9-11–9-15 up 6.8K; 10-04 "Let me put you on" (160K views) → 10-04 up 5,075 in a single day; 10-08 up 5,507 (10-07/10-08 new videos in that window); 10-20 "synthetiq downloads beta is out" (253K views) → 10-21 up 3.3K over two days.
  • Ratings: 156 ratings averaging 4.86 stars, distribution [0,0,0,22,133] (11-06), with no 1–3-star reviews. That doesn't look like a normal anime-tracking app (these usually pick up "source is down" complaints), so there may be prompted positive reviews. Unverified.
  • Charts: only appears in the VIDEO_PLAYERS free chart at #170 in the Philippines and #198 in South Africa. Users skew toward Southeast Asian and African emerging markets, and the volume is spread thin.
  • Pricing: one-time Plus in-app purchase, changed from 11-05 to $5.99,11-06 or $8.99 (googleplay database app_snap). No public revenue, and it hasn't appeared on any top-grossing chart.
  • iOS version: listed under App Store id6757483803,2026-01-08, version 8.6.7 (9-28), with 39 US ratings averaging 4.82 (iTunes lookup). Ranks 100–175 in the free category charts in Nigeria, Ghana, Jamaica and Kenya (appstore database).
  • Developer's own claims: the GitHub profile says Synthetiq Player has "around 30,000 active users," Synthetiq Books has "2000 users," and AROKI has "300+ users in its first week" (github.com/kas021/kas021). An earlier synthetiq-player repo README said "Active Users ~500" (v5.3.0, around early 2026 to March).

2. Competitors

What they do is: "a clean shell + third-party source modules the user adds = free anime/TV/manga." The category has existed for a long time and is large, but almost all of it is not in official stores:

ProductWhereLaunchedScaleHow Synthetiq differs

Verdict: there are plenty of similar products, but versions on Play that "ship no built-in sources and rely on modules" are nearly nonexistent. The top Android options (Cloudstream, Aniyomi) are all sideloaded. Synthetiq effectively brings the sideload community's model into an official store, where users install with one tap.

3. Where users come from

  1. The founder's own TikTok (confirmed, main channel): @synthetiq_hq, 18,295 followers, 260 videos, 218k likes (TikHub 11-06). Hit videos: one linking to the GitHub module repo got 8-17 458k views; "anime and movies app iOS" 8-01 255k; "how to get aroki to work" 9-14 369k; "V" 9-02 8.2.5 128k; 10-04 160k; 10-20 253k. The approach: titles like "new free anime app," plus lots of "Replying to @someone" videos answering comments (won't install, source is down, AirPlay doesn't work), treating the comment section as both customer support and topic source. 9-27 posted "Aroki & books on Android," directing iOS viewers to the Android version.
  2. Discord + GitHub 模块库(确认,留存与分发):模块放在 github.com/kas021/Synthetiq-Modules(47 star,11-05 还在更新),官网 synthetiq.uk/invite/player 教用户「设置 → 媒体与源 → 高级 → 手动添加服务器」粘贴这个库。YouTube 上第三方的小频道(Zorro's tips,5,130 播放)也写「先下 App,再进 Discord 拿模块、Android APK、PC EXE」。商店只负责安装,内容在 Discord/GitHub 里补——审核看不到。
  3. Some organic spread (confirmed but small): TikTok user dezandreife21 posted a tutorial with 10k views; the author posted on r/Mangareader and r/Synthetiq on Reddit. Nothing turns up on X (x-radar: 90 days, 0 posts), and there's no media coverage.
  4. Store search (inferred): on Play it only ranks 170–200 in the video player category charts of two countries, so store traffic is probably small.
  5. Paid ads: no evidence seen (the ad libraries only track listed products, so absence there doesn't mean no spend).

From late October the TikTok content clearly switched to templated "Synthetiq Books manga app walkthroughs," 2–3 posts a day with 600–1,500 views each. It reads like bulk or AI-generated copy, and performs far worse than the early videos where the founder appeared on camera answering comments. This lines up with the slowdown in Play installs.

4. Why it took off

  • The demand has been there all along, and it's for free anime: young viewers in emerging markets can't afford or can't buy official releases, and they want a free, ad-free anime app. Comments on TikTok ask about specific shows (like Re:Zero S4).
  • A "clean shell" gets through review: the store listing only describes a personal media library that connects to your own server, with no sources included; content is entirely up to users installing modules. On Android the top competitors can only be sideloaded, so this is one of the few official Play install paths.
  • The founder makes TikTok himself and answers comments: several videos with 25–460k views directly drove install spikes; the "Replying to" answer videos turned churn points (won't install, source is down) into content.
  • Build on iOS first, then move viewers to Android: the iOS version launched in January and TikTok mostly talked about iOS. After the Play version went live in late August, Android users in the same audience switched over directly (9-27 "Aroki & books on Android").
  • One-time purchases are cheap: $5.99 (from $11-06 up to $8.99) for a one-time unlock of expanded storage or multiple devices, with no subscription, which suits users in emerging markets.

5. Differentiation

Compared with Cloudstream / Aniyomi: on Play, one tap to install, no sideloading. Compared with pirated apps on Play that openly call themselves Anime: ships no content, so it looks compliant and is less likely to be pulled. Compared with Sora/Sulfur: the author makes content on TikTok to drive growth, and splits anime, manga (Books), and music (Music) into several apps that cross-promote each other. The edge isn't the player itself (features are much like Sora's), but "the disguise that gets it into an official store" plus the founder's TikTok. Yes, this is why it took off, but the advantage is fragile: it depends on review not seeing through it, and it disappears once Google takes it down for "facilitating infringement." The author already has reskinned apps like AROKI ready on iOS.

6. How many people can see it

It circulates in small circles: the TikTok anime-app crowd knows it, while X, media, and TrustMRR don't. Revenue isn't public. The only public figure from the developer is "about 30k active users" on GitHub.

7. Copycats

Found no one directly copying it; the same-model older products (Sora, Cloudstream) came earlier.

8. What others can borrow

  • "Shell + user-added sources" can pass store review, with the content ecosystem moved to Discord/GitHub. It can be transplanted to other content: manga, novels, music, IPTV, non-English drama.
  • The founder-on-camera "Replying to @user" TikTok answer videos handle both acquisition and customer support.
  • One author, several apps (Player / Aroki / Books / Music) spreads takedown risk and cross-promotes.
  • Monetizes through cheap one-time purchases in emerging markets.
  • Risk: copyright complaints and takedowns are routine, so be ready to reskin at any time.

9. Uncertain

  • Revenue unknown: no top-grossing chart data, and the conversion rate of the $8.99 one-time purchase isn't known.
  • Unclear whether "30k active users" counts iOS + Android combined or iOS only.
  • Unverified whether the 4.86 rating with no 1–3 star reviews reflects prompted reviews.
  • Unverified whether it runs ads (the ad library doesn't track it).
  • Play users' country mix can only be inferred from the charts (ph, za).
  • When it will be taken down can't be predicted.
