Wrote to a dog, got a reply 23 hours later: how a small Korean team made "free fortune-telling" truly free and still made money
What it is A Korean AI Saju (Four Pillars) app: you write a letter to a cartoon Samoyed about your worries, and it replies with a long letter based on your birth chart. Waiting for a reply is free; reading it right away costs money.
Why it took off Other fortune apps all work the same way: "read a bit for free, pay for the details." This one gives the full reply for free and only charges people who want it right now. So users who arrive from Instagram "free" ads don't feel tricked, and ratings and word of mouth held up. It also rode the New Year fortune season.
BHow you could follow Don't crowd into the saturated Korean market. Add the "write a letter, wait for a reply, pay to skip the wait" mechanic with a persona character, and bring it to markets still stuck on "read a bit, then pay to unlock" (Chinese Bazi / Zi Wei Dou Shu, Japanese fortune-telling, English tarot and astrology). Use Meta ads that promise "really free," and launch before 2027 Lunar New Year.
- Data (updated daily) · first launch 2025-02-02 · 11-07 installs 24,873
Android · Total installs worldwide Data 2026-10-29 → 2026-11-07 (10 days, 10 observations). Google's detail page only refreshes install counts every other day, so a flat day doesn't mean nobody installed.
Korea has more fortune-telling apps than you can count. Sulsul Saju does one thing: you write your worries as a letter to a cartoon dog, "Sulsul-i," and it reads your birth chart and replies in about 23 hours. The full reply is free. If you don't want to wait, you can pay two or three thousand won to read it immediately, and that's how it makes money. It's not a new app: it's been around for two years, isn't huge, and ranks around #50 on Korea's Lifestyle top-grossing chart. What's worth watching is its monetization model, and that it has just started selling "Korean fortune-telling" in Taiwan.
A review from Sep 27
In 2026 Sep 27, a Korean user gave Sulsul a 5-star rating on the App Store and wrote a long review:
"Other Instagram-linked love-Saju apps say it's free in the ads, then you get in and it wants money, so annoying. Sulsul-i isn't like that. You do have to wait a day, but it's free, and if you check in you can sometimes read it right away... the dog is so cute, it's healing, it feels less like fortune-telling and more like counseling."
That review pretty much explains the business: users come in from Instagram ads that say "free," and it really is free, just with a wait. The standard Korean fortune-app playbook is "read a bit free, unlock the details for money," and users have been burned by it many times, so an app that keeps its word stands out. Another App Store review (11-02) was more blunt: "I only tried it because the Instagram ad said free, and it really is free?! You wait about 23 hours."
What it is
- Developer: Aves LLC., a small company in Seocho-gu, Seoul, which also has a werewolf-style party game, a group-expense tracking app, and a supplement brand.
- Launch date: iOS version released in Sep 2024 6 (per iTunes release date). The Google Play store page now shows 2026-09-08, which is the date after the info reset, not the original launch. Before the app, it first ran as a web version at sulsulsaju.com, whose landing page read: "Write down any worry and get a reading of 1000+ characters. It's not like a chatbot."
- Core mechanic: pick a topic (love, getting back together, compatibility, career, wealth, starting a business, or "how well do I match my bias"), write down your worry, enter your birth date and time, and Sulsul-i replies with a long letter. There are also daily fortunes, home- and lock-screen widgets, and streak check-ins. The October 26 update added "2027 Year of the Fire Goat New Year fortune" and put it in the title.
- Pricing: no ads, in-app purchases from $0.69 to $74.99. It uses two in-app currencies, bones and bone fragments. Reading a reply right away costs 3 bones; check-ins give fragments, and 10 fragments convert to 1 bones.
Why this one: turning "unlock content" into "buy time"
Korean fortune apps usually charge for content, so without paying you only see the opening. Sulsul gives the whole reading for free and charges for waiting. That does three things:
- The ads hold up. Instagram ads can safely say "free," and users don't feel tricked when they arrive, so ratings stay steady: 1,396 iOS ratings in Korea averaging 4.68; 4.7 on Google Play from 643 reviews (11-06).
- The people willing to pay are the most impatient. Most people who come for a Saju reading ask about love or getting back together, and these are the users who most want to know right now. A user wrote in a Sep 28 review: "Sulsul-i's words are so warm, thank you... but 24 hours is really long~~~" People who find the wait too long are exactly the ones who will pay.
- Waiting for the reply is itself engaging, and it saves money. Waiting for a letter builds anticipation, and reviews keep using words like "cute" and "healing" and "like counseling," with few people saying it feels AI-written. Since it doesn't need real-time replies, generation can be batched and scheduled for off-peak hours, which lowers inference costs (inferred).
Then there's the Samoyed. The mascot is based on Korea's native breed, the Sapsaree, and the developer replied to reviews in the dog's voice, ending sentences with "~meong" (woof). There's also a small "burn away bad luck" interaction, and a July review praised it as a "genius feature." At its core it sells emotional comfort more than fortune-telling. The main users are likely women in their twenties and thirties (inferred: iOS rating count is more than double the Play review count, which matches the typical profile of Korean fortune-app users).
Some users push back on the pricing too. One review from Oct 20, 1 stars: "Watching an ad costs 2,000–3,000 won, which is pricier than most utility apps. I check in every day to collect bones, and then find out the reward is fragments. It takes 10 fragments to get 1 bone, and watching an ad needs 3 bones. So I'd have to check in for 30 days to skip once for free." Another Oct 19 review says they had enough bones, yet a single tap on "use" still jumped to the payment page. These complaints actually show the paywall is pushing people to pay.
Where users come from
| Channel | Evidence you can see |
|---|---|
| Instagram / Meta ads | Multiple reviews say they came in via Instagram "free" ads (Play 5-18, App Store 9-27, 11-02); how much was spent is not visible |
| X ads (inferred) | The sulsulsaju.com site has X's ad tracking pixel installed; no discussion about it on X in nearly 30 days |
| Store search | The title is stuffed with "사주 운세 궁합 고민상담 2027 신년운세", and the end of the Play description piles on 30+ keywords (무료사주, 신년운세, 로또번호추천……) |
| Seasonality | In Korea, November through January is the New Year fortune peak, and 10-26's updates are aimed squarely at it |
| Its own accounts | Instagram @sulsulsaju has about 1,200 followers, and the Kakao channel has 329 friends. Both are small and look more like places to host ad creatives |
| Earned exposure | A tistory blog, "2026 Saju / Fortune App BEST 5", ranks it #5 (2025-10); the review aggregator 사주랭크 has indexed 118 of its reviews |
Searching "술술사주" on TikTok turns up nothing relevant, and no media outlet has covered it.
How big is it?
Not big. Google Play cumulative installs worldwide are 24,873, up 7 in the last 617 days, roughly ninety a day. iOS is the main channel, with more than twice as many Korean-store ratings as Play reviews. On charts, Play's Korea Lifestyle Top Grossing has sat at #49 to #54 (10-29 to 11-06), and its best iOS Korea Lifestyle Top Grossing rank is #61. In Korea, #50 to #60 in Lifestyle Top Grossing is not high. Monthly revenue is likely tens of millions of won (estimate, unverified, roughly $20K to $50K).
November It launched a Traditional Chinese version, "順順八字-韓國算命・煩惱諮詢・暖心回信". Starting 11-05, it entered the Taiwan Play Lifestyle Top Free chart at #143 to #148. On the iOS Taiwan store it has only 5 ratings, so it is still getting started.
Who it's competing with
The Korean category is very crowded. "AI fortune-telling + cartoon characters" has been an established niche for 2026 years, and 술술 sits mid-pack:
| Competitors | Scale (Google Play / App Store, 11-06) | How it differs from 술술 |
|---|---|---|
| 점신 | Play 6.45M installs, Korea Lifestyle Top Grossing #42 | An old-timer from 2014, covering physiognomy, tarot and live human consultations |
| 포스텔러 Forceteller | Play 4.04M, iOS 14.9K ratings | A large all-in-one paid content platform |
| 헬로우봇 Hellobot | Play 3M, Korea Lifestyle Top Grossing #5 | The closest rival: multiple AI characters giving instant fortune chats |
| Grandma Kim Gwija (chatting with a fortune-telling grandma character) | Play 73K, iOS 9,458 ratings, 7 days +218, iOS Lifestyle Top Grossing #17 | Launched 2026-04 later, also relying on character personas, and it is scaling far faster than 술술 |
| 호리 | Play 23K, Korea Lifestyle Top Grossing #7 | Install numbers are similar to 술술's, but its revenue ranking is much higher |
| I'm Mili, 사주GPT | About 110K installs each, Top Grossing 12 / 16 | AI Saju chat with no mascot |
| Paljanya and others | Thousands of installs | Also uses a cute pet (cat) as the character |
The two biggest ways 술술 differs from them: first, it's letter-writing where you wait for a reply, not instant chat; second, it's free but you wait, unlike others that give you a taste before charging. Both are easy to copy, and there are already similar products that launched more than a year after it and have passed it in ranking and revenue.
If it were you
In one line: Don't fight it in Korea. The "write a letter, wait for a reply, pay to skip the wait" model can be moved to other markets, and its move into Taiwan suggests it's thinking the same way.
Who it suits: small teams who understand a market's fortune-telling culture (Bazi, Zi Wei, tarot, astrology, Japanese divination), can run Meta ads, and can polish characters and copy. The technical bar is low: one LLM plus a Bazi chart-calculation library is enough.
Who it doesn't suit: people who don't want to run ads and are counting on organic traffic alone. 술술's users almost all come from ads. It has no well-established character persona and no "free" experience that actually delivers, so ad spend is wasted. It also doesn't suit anyone wanting to build in Korea, where the top spots are held by big platforms and funded character products.
How to build it: Replies must be long, complete, and free, so the first letter makes people feel "they really didn't scam me." Charge only for "read it now," priced under the cost of a coffee. Check-ins and home-screen widgets bring people back daily. The character needs its own voice, and replies to comments should also use the character's tone. Markets to consider: Taiwan, Hong Kong/Macau, and Southeast Asian Chinese communities for Bazi and Zi Wei; Japan for divination; English-speaking markets for tarot and astrology. Pick a category in your target market that still relies on "give a little, then pay to unlock".
How to acquire users: Instagram / Meta ads pitched as "truly free, you just have to wait," with creatives built from character and reply screenshots. Store titles and keywords should target what's timely this season: New Year fortune, Valentine's compatibility, exam luck. In Taiwan, you could add earned exposure on Threads and Dcard (suggestion, unverified).
When to launch: The biggest Chinese-market peak is before Lunar New Year in 2027 (Lunar New Year falls on Feb 6). Aim to launch before mid-January to catch the New Year fortune search peak. If you miss it, target the next peak and watch how far 順順八字 grows in Taiwan.
Where the read could be wrong: ① After the Korean New Year peak (after February 2027), 술술 dropped out of the top 100 Korea Lifestyle Top Grossing, suggesting it mostly rides seasonality and the payment model alone can't hold it up. ② By March 2027, 順順八字 in Taiwan still had only a few dozen ratings and had fallen off the Free chart, suggesting "Korean fortune-telling" and this payment model may not work in other markets. ③ Korea's top players (Hellobot, 점신) have also adopted the "free wait" model without any visible growth, suggesting ads, not the payment model, are what's actually driving results.

One line
A Korean Four Pillars Bazi "write-a-letter consultation" app: a cartoon Korean Jindo-style dog (삽살개) named "술술이" reads your Bazi and writes back. The core payment mechanic is "wait about 23 hours to read the reply for free, or pay bones (≈₩2,000–3,000) to read it right away". It's not new: it launched 2024 years ago, and through Instagram ads, a mascot, and a "truly free" reputation it slowly built up to Korea Lifestyle Top Grossing #50–60. 2027 New Year fortune is the seasonal accelerator right now.
Data (correcting the data card first)
- The listing date is not 2026-09-08. The iOS version (id 6608989137) launched 2024-09-06 (iTunes lookup). The Play library's
app.releasedis 2025-02-02 (backed out from the earliest reviews); the 2026-09-08 on the data card is the date the store info was reset. So the recall argument "launched two months ago and already hit the bestseller chart" doesn't hold. This is a product that has been running for two years. - There's an even earlier web version: the Kakao channel 「술술」 (329 friends) posted a "홈페이지 리뉴얼" (homepage renewal) notice, site sulsulsaju.com, which suggests they built the web version first and the app later.
- Play: 24,873 lifetime installs globally, +617 over the last 7 days (about 90/day); store page at 4.7 stars with 643 reviews; Korea LIFESTYLE Top Grossing steady at #2026-10-29–#11-06 (49–54); from 11-05 it has charted Taiwan LIFESTYLE Top Free at #143–#148 (googleplay library chart_rank / app_snap).
- iOS is the main market: the Korea store has 1,396 ratings, averaging 4.68,7 stars (+20 ratings over 61 days); best Korea Lifestyle Top Grossing rank #2026-11-06 (appstore library app_profile / app_day). iOS has more than twice as many ratings as Play reviews, and the core users are iPhone users (mostly young women, consistent with the Korean fortune-telling user profile; not verified).
- 扩区:2026-11 在台湾上了繁中版「順順八字-韓國算命・煩惱諮詢・暖心回信」(iOS tw 5 个评分,Play tw 免费榜 ~148),刚起步。
- In-app purchases at $0.69–$74.99 per item, no ads (app_snap.ad_supported = False). Latest update 2026-10-26, featured "2027 丁未年新年运势" (the 2027 new-year fortune).
Competitors (the Korean BaZi/fortune app space is extremely crowded)
| Product | Platform | Launched | Scale (googleplay / appstore libraries, 2026-11-06) | How it differs from 술술 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 점신(Techlabs) | Android/iOS | 2014 | Play 6.45M installs, KR Lifestyle Top Grossing 42 | Long-established all-rounder with face reading, tarot, and live consultations; 술술 only does "BaZi + letter writing" |
| 포스텔러 Forceteller | Android/iOS | 2017 | Play 4.04M, iOS 14.9K ratings | Big all-in-one content platform; 술술 is lighter and cuter |
| 헬로우봇 Hellobot | Android/iOS | 2018 | Play 3M, KR Lifestyle Top Grossing #5 | The closest rival: several AI character chat-style fortune apps; 술술 has a single mascot and asynchronous letters, not instant chat |
| 김귀자 할머니(사주 캐릭터챗) | Android/iOS | 2026-04 | Play 73k, iOS 9,458 ratings (7 days +218), iOS Lifestyle Top Grossing 17, Play 20 | Same "character persona" route (an old fortune-teller granny), but with instant chat; it scaled much faster than 술술 and is the leading newcomer in the character fortune niche |
| 호리(Yumeta Lab) | Android/iOS | 2026-03 | Play 23k, KR Lifestyle Top Grossing #7 | Install counts similar to 술술 but much higher grossing rank, so better paid efficiency |
| 아임미리 / 사주GPT | Android | 2025–26 | About 110k each, KR Lifestyle Top Grossing 12 / 16 | AI BaZi chat, no mascot |
| 팔자냥 / 우주고양이 보라 | Android/iOS | 2026-03 / earlier | 7.8 thousand / not verified | Also uses a cute pet (a cat) as its persona |
| 천명 / 사주나루 / 소울톡 | Android/iOS | 2016–2024 | 150k / 560k | Real-person phone/chat consultations billed per minute; 술술 is all AI |
Bottom line: a lot of people are doing the same thing. "AI BaZi + cute character" has been an established niche for 2026 years, and 술술 is not leading it: installs and revenue sit in the middle of the pack.
Growth tactics (evidence)
- Instagram/Meta paid ads (confirmed): a Play review (Jimmy Choi, 2026-05-18) says "Ads on Instagram and elsewhere promise it's free... this app just makes you wait and then you get your result"; an App Store review quoted on 사주랭크 (2026-11-02) says "I tried it because the Instagram ad said it was free, and it really is free?! You have to wait 23 hours?". Our metaads / googleads libraries didn't track it (they only cover products on the watch list; not finding it doesn't mean it isn't advertising).
- Own Instagram account @sulsulsaju (about 1.2K followers, 11 posts; mascot daily life and "tap once to ward off bad luck"-style reels). Small in scale; more like a base for ad creative than a source of organic traffic.
- Store search ASO: the title is stuffed with "사주 운세 궁합 고민상담 2027 신년운세", and the description ends with a pile of 30+ keywords (무료사주, 로또번호추천, 신년운세…). Google search results show organic traffic with utm_term=술술사주.
- Blog and list soft exposure: a tistory blog's "2026 사주/운세 앱 BEST 5" ranks 술술 at #5 (2025-10); the 사주랭크 aggregator indexes 118 reviews.
- Seasonality: the title and updates are built around "2027 신년운세". Korea's 11–January stretch is peak new-year fortune season, and current growth mostly comes from here.
- Retention hooks: daily fortune + desktop widget + streak rewards in "bone fragments"; the developer replies to each review in a "~멍" tone (persona consistency), which pushed the rating up to 4.7.
- A TikTok search for "술술사주" returns nothing relevant; X (x-radar) has 30 posts in the last 0 days. No influencer or media coverage.
Why it works
- "Truly free, you just have to wait" hits the category's biggest pain point: Korean fortune apps commonly use "see a little for free, pay for detailed readings", and reviews keep complaining that other apps won't show detailed content unless you pay, or just tell you what you want to hear (Play review 이민혁 2026-08-11). 술술 changes the paywall from "unlock content" to "buy time": the full content is free, it just arrives after ~23 hours, and people in a hurry pay ₩2–3K to read it right away. This keeps the "free" promise in Instagram ads from backfiring and earns good ratings, while conversion comes from the anxious users (dating, getting back together) who most want to know right now.
- The ritual of writing and waiting for a reply: reviews say "it's like waiting for a letter, there's excitement when you open it", "human warmth", "natural, not AI-like". Asynchronous replies hide the AI-generated feel and lower inference costs (they can be batched and staggered).
- Mascot plus healing emotion: the Samoyed-style mascot 술술이 and the "burn away bad luck" interaction (review by 조유나 2026-07-18 calls it a "genius feature") package fortune-telling as emotional healing, suited to women aged 20–30.
- Monetization design: a dual currency of bones and bone fragments plus check-ins, with tiers of $0.69–$74.99. Some users complain "10 fragments = ... 30 days of check-ins to see it once" and "overly aggressive upselling" (App Store 2026-10-20, 사주랭크), showing the paywall is working.
- The scale is actually modest: Play 25k installs, iOS 1,400 ratings, KR Lifestyle Top Grossing #50–#60. In Korea that is a low bar; revenue might be in the tens of millions of won per month (not verified, pure speculation). A more accurate way to say it "broke out": a small team turned a stable small business into a mid-tier one, and now it is looking for growth from the new-year fortune season and the Taiwan expansion.
Differentiation
- What's different: ① asynchronous "write, then wait for a reply" rather than live chat; ② a time paywall of "free but wait / pay to skip the wait" (the stamina model from mobile games applied to fortune-telling); ③ a consistent persona built around a single pet mascot, including the developer's own review replies.
- Is this why it broke out? It's the main reason. "Free but wait" lets the free Instagram ads deliver on their promise, which keeps reviews and ratings stable; the time paywall monetizes anxious demand. But this differentiation is easy to copy, and in the character fortune niche 김귀자 할머니 and 호리 are scaling and monetizing faster, so 술술's moat is shallow.
Visibility
Not many people know about it yet: no public revenue figures, no coverage from media or big X accounts, no content on TikTok; only a few blog lists and review aggregators mention it. But the "character-driven AI fortune-telling" approach itself is already crowded.
Takeaways
- Apply a "stamina/wait timer" paywall to AI-generated content: full content free, charge for "instant" access, and save on inference costs at the same time.
- The asynchronous letter format lowers the bar on AI quality and increases anticipation and return visits.
- The ad says "free", and the product really is free, which keeps ratings stable through word of mouth; the developer replies to reviews in the character's voice.
- After saturating Korea, it went overseas to Taiwan with "Korean fortune-telling" as the selling point (the Traditional Chinese name is literally "韓國算命・暖心回信", "Korean fortune-telling, warm replies").
Uncertain
- Real revenue, ad spend and ROI (not tracked by the ad libraries); when Instagram ads started.
- Whether the Taiwan version can scale (just launched, iOS 5 ratings).
- The exact Play launch date (the library's 2025-02-02 is a lower-bound estimate).
