> It hasn't actually taken off. In Korea, it gave lifetime memberships to small creators for word of mouth and used the badge "Play Photography New Arrival #1" as social proof. The volume is tiny. The early-November install spike happened while its Korean rank didn't move, mostly from low-intent installs in Brazil, India and elsewhere. It coincided with a English rename ahead of a global launch, so paid acquisition is likely.

# Over a week in: 34k installs but only 79 reviews. A film camera made by one person in Korea hasn't really taken off

**What it is** A real-time film filter camera built by an indie developer in Korea, with 30 self-tuned color looks; you can shoot photos and video, and re-develop them. No ads, all filters unlocked, free saves 10 times a day; VIP is a monthly or annual subscription or a one-time purchase.

**Why it's getting attention** It hasn't really taken off. In Korea they gave lifetime memberships to small creators to get coverage and show off "Play Photography new release, free #1" as social proof; the scale is tiny. The sharp install spike in early November happened while its Korean rank stayed flat, and most of it came from low-intent installs in places like Brazil and India. It coincides with changing the English name in preparation for a global launch, so paid acquisition is likely.

**C** **How you could follow this** Don't copy the app; copy the playbook: trade lifetime memberships for coverage from a few dozen small creators with good taste, and lower the trial barrier with "all filters on, limited saves". If you do want to build in this category, focus on real-time video with film color and pick a language market that hasn't been overdone yet.

C grade: it hasn't broken out on its own, there are no revenue signals, and the installs were propped up by low-intent overseas traffic. The Korean film camera space is already packed with big players like SNOW, established names like Dazz and Huji, and ironpig, which is actually making money. The cold-start playbook is worth studying, but chasing this product isn't worth it. Few people know about it yet

Data (updated daily) · first launch 2026-10-07 · 11-07 installs 36,739

Android · Total installs worldwide

Data 2026-10-29 → 2026-11-07 (10 days, 10 observations). Google's detail page only refreshes install counts every other day, so a flat day doesn't mean nobody installed.

Kim Seong-ho, an indie developer in Gimhae, built a film filter camera called 「이슬필름」 (DewFilm). In early November it picked up 34k installs on Google Play over just over a week, and the curve looks steep. Break it down, though, and there are very few users in Korea; most of the extra installs came from abroad and left little trace. It's worth a look because a few of its cold-start tactics are cheap, not because it has broken out.

### A post bought with a lifetime membership

Late October, a Busan Instagram blogger with the handle 「투지」(@toozi051) posted a set of beach photos with the caption: "I've used this camera app everywhere for about two weeks. Verdict: if you treat it as slow, like shooting film, it's pretty satisfying. The tones are nice, and there's plenty of grain and glow. I'm from Busan, so I only used the 'Busan' filter." Small print on the last line: "*이슬필름 gave me a lifetime license" — the app gifted her a lifetime license.

Another parenting blogger, 「리하데이」, wrote a longer post, tagged "[제공]" (sponsored) right at the top: "After I shared an edit post, lots of editing apps reached out and I turned them all down. 이슬필름 isn't famous yet, but you'll like the colors the moment you see them." She said the point that moved her most was "photos and videos can get the same tone, and shots you've edited can be brought back in and re-edited," and ended with "Leave a comment and I'll send you my go-to filters and how I use them."

This is DewFilm's cold-start playbook: no cash, lifetime memberships traded for real recommendations from small bloggers, and the bloggers label the sponsorship themselves, which makes the posts read as more credible.

### What it is

A film-filter camera with live preview, shooting both photos and video. The store page pitches these points:

- 30 kinds of "digital film color tuned by 이슬필름," from soft pastels to black-and-white and cinematic, with the effect visible live before you shoot;

- video also takes film color directly, and saved photos and videos can be "re-developed" in a different film look inside the app;

- grain, glow, frames, and date stamps can be added;

- "No banner ads, no rewarded ads; no sign-up required."

The monetization is less common: all filters are free, and the limit is on saves: each device gets 10 free saves per day (photos, videos, and re-develops all count), resetting at midnight local phone time. For unlimited saves, there's VIP, with monthly, yearly, and lifetime options; the listed single-item prices on the store run from $1.59 to $8.49.

The iOS version launched Oct 2, the Android version Oct 7. The developer registered a sole proprietorship in Gimhae, South Gyeongsang, 2022 years ago, and this is the only app under it.

### The curve is steep, but Koreans didn't really come

Google Play's cumulative global installs look like this (before 10-28, the figures are AppstoreSpy estimates):

| Date | Total installs | New | Korea Photo Top Free |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10-20 | About 1,030 | | — |
| 10-28 | 2,782 | | — |
| 10-31 | 5,042 | +2,260 | 69 |
| 11-02 | 18,333 | +13,291 in two days | 66 |
| 11-03 | 28,056 | +9,723 | 58 |
| 11-05 | 36,739 | +8,683 in two days | 82 |
| 11-06 | 36,739 | 0 | 88 |

The problem is in the last column. In early November, Korean photo-app Top Free charts had apps around rank 60 with mostly Korean users, gaining only a few hundred to a bit over a thousand installs a week: 64 픽미, 1,027,65 poby, 1,629,69 네몽, 604. DewFilm gained +34k a week, yet its rank stayed between #58 and #88 and never moved up. So of those 34k, only a small share should be from Korea; over 90% are likely from abroad (inference, since install counts by country aren't visible).

Three more clues. First, from Nov 1 it also appeared on the photo free charts in Brazil (#171), Argentina (#188), India (#181), and Taiwan (#140), always near the bottom. Second, reviews barely moved: 36k installs, only 79 reviews on Play, 25 ratings on the iOS Korea store, and 0 on the US store (11-06). Third, the timing lines up: at the end of October it renamed itself the English "DewFilm - Film Camera," and around Nov 2 it posted on Threads recruiting models, writing "before the 이슬필름 global launch": shoots in South Gyeongsang, "no pay, meals and transport covered," with the photos used as the app's cover images.

The most likely explanation is Google App ads or similar overseas paid acquisition, buying installs that probably won't stick around (inferred; I couldn't find it in the public ad libraries). Another possibility is that Play gave it featured placement in a few countries, but there's no evidence for that. Growth is also slowing: about 9,700 a day around Nov 3, about 2,600 around Nov 5, and 0 on Nov 6.

The early reviews also deserve a question mark. The high-upvoted positive reviews you can see are all dated between Oct 15 and 19, when the app had only a few hundred installs total, and they read like promotional copy. One is signed with a Vietnamese name but written in Korean, and the developer replied, "많이 홍보부탁드려요" (please help promote it a lot). It looks like test-group swaps or favors from acquaintances (inference).

### Where the Korean users came from

The volume is small, but every move is visible:

1. **Giving lifetime memberships to small bloggers** : the two posts at the top. This one is confirmed.

2. **Official account posting** . The Threads @dewfilm_camera account has only 57 followers, with a few likes per post, and tags posts with competitor hashtags like #dazzcam #101cam to ride their traffic. On TikTok I found only one video, "진짜 미친 카메라앱 발견…스토어 이슬필름 검색" (found a truly crazy camera app, search 이슬필름 in the store), with 171 views.

3. **Showing off the chart.** In Oct 31 it posted on Threads: "Wow, 이슬필름 is #1 free in the Google Play Photography new releases in Korea." The source is the third-party site AppBrain's "Top New Free" list, not Play's official chart, but it's good enough for social proof.

4. **Store search** . The Korean name is "이슬필름 - 필름 사진 빈티지 감성 카메라," stuffed with search terms like film, photo, vintage, mood, and camera. In late October it stayed around #60 on the Korea photo free chart, likely from new-app weighting plus keywords (inference).

No media, X, or Reddit coverage mentions it.

### Who it's competing with

In 2026, Korea's "감성 필름 카메라" (mood film camera) category was packed: on iOS Korea alone, more than twenty similar apps launched after June 2025.

| Product | Scale | Comparing with DewFilm |
|---|---|---|
| Dazz Cam | Over a million global iOS ratings, 15,903 on the Korea store | The category benchmark, mimicking the look of a physical film camera |
| 내가 당신을 사랑할 때 보이는 순간들(ironpig) | 111k Play installs, #1 on Korea's photo free chart, #15–19 on the grossing chart; 3,804 iOS Korea ratings | Same mood-camera lane with only 14 filters, but the name hits an emotion and people in Korea really pay for it |
| 101cam(SNOW) | 705 iOS Korea ratings, best rank #4 on the photo free chart | Film + CCD camera from a big Naver-affiliated company |
| Foodie(SNOW) | 42.3M Play installs, #23 on Korea's photo grossing chart | An established filter camera from a big company |
| GIKA 기카 | Korean iOS ratings 899 | Focused on the feel of old phones and old digital cameras |
| 롤리즈 ROLLIE'S | 58 iOS Korea ratings, 2,857 Play installs | A 35mm film camera launched in Korea around the same time, similar in size to DewFilm in Korea |
| OldRoll / ProCCD / Huji Cam | Each has tens of millions to over 40 million Play installs | A global veteran that simulates real camera models |
| Tools like Digicam and RetroCam | Millions of installs | Runs ads and relies on paid acquisition |

DewFilm does differ in a few product ways: video also gets live color, photos and videos can be re-developed, the color is self-tuned rather than copying a camera model, there are no ads, and the free tier is "all filters unlocked, save count limited" rather than locked filters. The blogger posts repeatedly highlight "the same tone for photos and video," which is the main point. But these differences currently show up only in a few recommendation posts and have little to do with those 34k installs. In Korea, its scale is a fraction of ironpig's.

### Where the money comes from: not yet visible

It has never charted on any country's grossing chart. A batch of lifetime memberships has been handed out, but how many people bought subscriptions is not visible from outside.

### If it were you

**Verdict:** there are things to learn, but following it isn't worth it. DewFilm hasn't proven itself yet. The Korean film-camera lane it sits in is already crowded with big players (SNOW), veterans (Dazz, Huji), and a mood-driven app that's actually making money (ironpig). The install curve is propped up by paid acquisition, not demand.

**Who it suits:** people who already know color grading, have a reputation for taste in some language community, or know one or two photography, parenting, or travel bloggers. What you should take away is its playbook, not the app itself.

**Who it doesn't suit:** anyone planning to make "another film filter camera" to go head-on in Korea, Japan, or English-speaking markets (dozens of rivals, with big players present); anyone who sees the global install curve and concludes "it's blowing up" and wants to copy it.

**How to do it:** if you must build in this category, pick a language market where the mood film-camera niche isn't saturated, or go after its weak spot: video. Many competitors only handle photos, and "live video film color, same tone for photos and video" is something bloggers already call out as a benefit, so it could be a standalone main selling point. For monetization, follow its approach: all filters unlocked, daily save limit, plus monthly, yearly, and one-time purchase options.

**How to get users:** copy its Korea playbook. Trade lifetime memberships for 20 to 50 small bloggers with a reputation for taste, and have them disclose the sponsorship and post real "I've used it for two weeks" posts, adding a line like "Comment and I'll send you my filter tips" to drive engagement. Use screenshots of third-party new-app charts as social proof, and pack the store name with search terms. Hold off on paid acquisition for now: DewFilm showed that low-intent overseas installs inflate the numbers but not the reviews.

**When to move:** no rush. This category has no window; what counts is whether your taste and your name can hit an emotion.

**Signs I'm wrong:** (1) If DewFilm breaks into the top 2027 on Korea's photo grossing chart after January 50, or its iOS Korea rating climbs past 500, it has actually broken out, and its approach works better than it looks; (2) if after the global launch its review counts rise with installs in places like Brazil and India, those overseas installs weren't low-intent but real demand.

Where users come from

- **Confirmed** **Instagram micro-creator seeding (lifetime membership given away)** : posts by @리하데이 and @toozi051 are tagged "평생구독권/사용권을 제공받았습니다" ("received a lifetime subscription/license")

- **Confirmed** **Official accounts posting their own content on Threads / Instagram / TikTok** : Threads @dewfilm_camera with 57 followers; one TikTok video with 171 views; piggybacks on #dazzcam #101cam tags

- **Confirmed** **Shares chart placement as social proof** : 10-31 posted on Threads about AppBrain's Korea Photography Top New Free, ranked #1

- Inferred **Google Play search and new-release exposure** : the Korean name packs in keywords like "필름 사진 빈티지 감성 카메라"; in October it held roughly #60 on the Korea Photography Top Free chart

- Inferred **Overseas paid acquisition (e.g. Google App Ads)** : installs spiked from 11-01 while the Korean rank stayed flat, and it simultaneously appeared at the bottom of charts in Brazil, Argentina, India and Taiwan; review counts barely moved; Threads says a global launch is coming; not found in the googleads library, but it isn't on the tracked list

## Why DewFilm - Film Camera (이슬필름, Google Play kr.dewfilm.camera) is getting traction

> Research date 2026-11-06. Data comes from our googleplay / appstore / googleads libraries (from 2026-10-28/29), AppstoreSpy-backfilled history (googleplay.app_day_ext), iTunes lookup, Google Play store pages (read via Jina), Jina / Brave search, TikHub, x-radar, and public Threads / Instagram pages.

### Bottom line

**It hasn't really broken out yet.** This is a film-filter camera built by indie developer Sungho Kim (金成浩) in Gimhae, South Gyeongsang. Its Korean playbook is simple: give lifetime memberships to small Instagram creators in exchange for posts, and promote itself under the banner of Google Play's "Korea Photography New Free #1" ranking. Its real Korean footprint is small: 25 ratings on the Korean iOS store and 79 reviews on Play.

The install climb on the data card, "7 days +34k installs," happened while the app sat at #58–88 on Korea's Photography Top Free chart. At that rank, a Korea-focused app typically adds a few hundred to a bit over a thousand a week. So by extrapolation, over 90% of those 34k came from outside Korea, consistent with its appearance at the bottom of Photography charts in Brazil, Argentina, India and Taiwan. The timing also matches when it added an English name in October and started talking about a "global launch." The most likely explanation is Google App Ads or other overseas buys bringing in low-intent installs. However, no ads show up in the ad libraries, so this is unverified. There is no revenue signal yet: it hasn't charted on any store's Top Grossing.

### What it is

- A real-time film-filter camera that shoots photos and video. It has 30 original "digital film looks" with grain, halation, frames and dates, and can "re-develop" photos and videos from your camera roll in a different film stock. Later updates added portrait mode, a level tool, field-of-view switching and a PV button (Play update notes; Instagram @dewfilm_camera).

- Monetization: no ads, no sign-up required. Each device can save 10 times a day for free, with all filters available; unlimited use requires VIP, offered as monthly, annual or lifetime plans. In-app purchase range $1.59–$8.49 (Play store page, googleplay library).

- Developer: Sungho Kim, based in Gimhae, South Gyeongsang, registered as a sole proprietor in 2022 (Play developer info). Contact email Dewfilmstudio1988@gmail.com, privacy policy hosted on Notion. This developer has only this one app in the library (googleplay.developer).

- Timeline: iOS launched 2026-10-02 (iTunes lookup); Android launched 2026-10-07 (googleplay.app.released). About 3 weeks before that, Instagram posted an "Android launch" reel. 10-29: AppBrain placed it at #1 on Korea's Photography Top New Free, and the developer 10-31 posted about it on Threads. Around 11-02, a Threads post recruited models, framed as "before the global launch."

Source: googleplay.app_day / app_snap / chart_rank, plus app_day_ext before 10-28 (AppstoreSpy estimates).

- **Installs are not mainly coming from Korea** . 11-06 On the Korean Photo & Video Top Free chart, the Korea-focused apps added roughly this much in a week: 픽미 (64 people) +1,027, poby (65 people) +1,629, 네몽 (69 people) +604. The #1 app, 「내가 당신을 사랑할 때 보이는 순간들」, did 2k–8k a day. DewFilm added +34k in the same week but kept bouncing between #58 and #88 without climbing. So most of the growth is not coming from Korea. This is an estimate; we don't have installs broken down by country.

- Starting 11-01, it also appeared on the Photography Top Free charts in Argentina (#188), Brazil (#171), India (#181) and Taiwan (#140), all at the bottom, through 11-06 (Brazil #175). The entry bar at the bottom of those charts is low. This suggests installs were scattered across several countries, with few in each.

- **Very low user engagement** : Play rating 4.9–5.0 stars with 79 reviews; iOS Korea 25 ratings at 4.92 stars; US store 0 ratings (iTunes lookup, 11-06). 36k installs produced only 79 reviews. The most-liked reviews visible were all posted between 10-15 and 10-19, when total installs were only a few hundred, and they read like promotional copy. One reviewer has a Vietnamese-sounding name but wrote in Korean, and the developer replied "많이 홍보부탁드려요" ("please promote us a lot"). Could be test-group or friends-and-family praise; unverified.

- iOS: best rank of #121 on Korea's Photography & Video Top Free (11-04), later dropping to #11-06–191; it also briefly charted near the bottom in the Philippines (#187–204) (appstore.app_day).

- Growth is already slowing: daily installs fell from about 11-03k in 9.7 to about 11-05k in 2.6 (AppstoreSpy estimates / googleplay), and 11-06 is 0.

### Where users come from (growth levers)

1. **Lifetime memberships traded for micro-creator posts (confirmed).** An Instagram creator, 리하데이 (who posts parenting content), wrote at the top of a post: "[제공] 이슬필름 평생구독권을 제공받았습니다" ("[Sponsored] Received a lifetime subscription to Idle Film"). A Busan creator, 투지 @toozi051, posted after two weeks of use, noting "이슬필름으로부터 평생사용권을 제공받았습니다" ("received a lifetime license from Idle Film") (https://www.instagram.com/p/DfRdN-5oHZW/ , [www.instagram.com/p/De-abcak-Y4/](https://www.instagram.com/p/De-abcak-Y4/) ). This costs no cash, just memberships.

2. **The official account posts its own content, but reach is tiny (confirmed).** Threads @dewfilm_camera has only 57 followers, with a few likes per post. On TikTok there is a single video, apparently by the developer, titled "진짜 미친 카메라앱 발견…스토어 이슬필름 검색" ("Found a seriously crazy camera app… search Idle Film in the store"), with 171 views (TikHub, 10-26). Its posts carry competitor tags like #dazzcam and #101cam to ride their traffic.

3. **Chart placement used as endorsement (confirmed).** 10-31 posted on Threads: "Korea Google Play Photography New Free #1" (AppBrain's Top New Free figure), using it as social proof.

4. **Play store search and new-release exposure (inferred).** The Korean name packs in search terms like "필름 사진 빈티지 감성 카메라", and the English name "DewFilm - Film Camera" also covers "film camera." In late October it held a steady spot around #60 on Korea's Photography Top Free chart, likely from new-release weighting plus keywords.

5. **Overseas scale-up around 11-01: probably paid acquisition, unverified.** The evidence: first, installs spiked while the Korean rank stayed flat; second, it showed up at the bottom of charts in Brazil, Argentina, India and Taiwan on the same days; third, review and rating counts barely moved; fourth, the Threads posts say a "global launch" is coming. The googleads library shows no ads for it or for ironpig, but that library only tracks apps on its list, and DewFilm isn't on it, so the absence proves nothing. It's also absent from the Meta and TikTok ad libraries. Another possibility is that Play featured it in some countries; no evidence for that either.

6. Media, X, Reddit: nothing found. Searching x-radar for "dewfilm" and "이슬필름" returned 60 posts in 0 days; Brave and Jina only turned up auto-generated download sites like AppBrain, Softonic and CNET.

### Competitors

In 2026, the Korean "감성 film camera" niche is extremely crowded: on the Korean iOS store alone, more than twenty similar apps have launched since 2025-06 (appstore library).

| Product | Where | Launched | Scale | How DewFilm differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dazz Cam(DAZZ PTE) | iOS/Android | 2018 | Over a million global iOS ratings, 15,903 in Korea; best Korea Photography Top Free rank #26 | Category benchmark, sells the look of a real film body. DewFilm's posts tag #dazzcam to ride its traffic |
| 내가 당신을 사랑할 때 보이는 순간들(ironpig) | iOS/Android | iOS 2026-06,Play 2026-09 | 3,804 iOS ratings in Korea; 111k Play installs; #1 on Korea's Photography Top Free, #15–19 on Top Grossing | Plays the same Korean "감성" niche with only 14 filters, but the name carries mood, and Koreans genuinely pay for it. DewFilm's Korean footprint is roughly a fraction of this one |
| 101cam(SNOW) | iOS | 2026-07 | 705 iOS Korea ratings, best #4 on the photo free chart | Film + CCD camera built by a big tech company (Naver family), with resources and traffic |
| Foodie(SNOW) | iOS/Android | 2016 | 42.3M Play installs, #23 on Korea's photo grossing chart | A long-running filter camera from a big company, with film recipes too |
| GIKA 기카(Noahproject) | iOS | 2025-12 | iOS Korea 899 ratings | Focused on the feel of old phones and digicams |
| 롤리즈 ROLLIE'S(mayacrew) | iOS/Android | 2026-09/10 | 58 iOS ratings in Korea; 2,857 Play installs | Also a new Korean 35mm film camera, with a footprint similar to DewFilm's in Korea |
| D.Cut(Kenotype) | iOS/Android | 2026-07 | Play 6,595 installs | Retro film + camcorder |
| OldRoll / ProCCD / Huji Cam | Android/iOS | 2018–2022 | Play about 40.7M / 23M / 46.2M installs | Long-running global brand that models real camera bodies. DewFilm takes the route of its own color looks |
| Clones and utility-style apps (Vintage Film Camera - Digicam, RetroCam, knockoffs of Dazz Cam, etc.) | Android | 2025–2026 | Millions of installs, driven by paid acquisition | Ad-monetized and acquisition-driven. DewFilm has no ads and runs on subscriptions |
| iPhone photography style / Samsung filters | Big-company features | Already there | Preinstalled | The system camera has built-in color grading, but no film grain, halation or date-stamp effects |

### Differentiation

- The product differs from rivals in a few ways: it applies film color to video in real time (most competitors only handle photos, or only process after shooting); photos and videos can be "re-developed" into other film stocks; it has 30 original color looks rather than copying real camera bodies; it has no ads and no sign-up; the free tier is "10 saves a day, all filters unlocked" rather than locking filters. The phrase repeated in the seeding posts is "사진과 영상을 같은 색감으로 찍을 수 있고" (you can shoot photos and video in the same color tone).

- **These differences haven't driven the growth yet.** In Korea its footprint is far smaller than ironpig, 101cam and GIKA. The 34k that drove the spike came mostly from overseas and is largely unrelated to product word of mouth (reviews and ratings barely moved). The differences so far show up only in a few small creators' seeding posts.

### What to borrow

- A cash-free cold-start tactic: give lifetime memberships to micro-creators known for color and aesthetic taste; the creators label the posts "[Sponsored]," which can make them look more credible.

- Replace locked filters with "N free saves a day, all filters on," lowering the trial barrier while still giving subscriptions a reason to exist.

- Use third-party chart screenshots (AppBrain Top New Free) as social proof.

- A caution in the other direction: Play install counts can be inflated by low-intent overseas installs. When evaluating a Korea-focused app like this one, check its Korean chart rank and review count against the global install curve, not the global curve alone.

### Unknowns

- Where the roughly 30k installs between 11-01 and 11-05 came from is unverified: Google App Ads, other ad networks, Play recommendation slots, or incentivized installs. We only have total global install counts, not per-country figures.

- We have no data on whether it charges or how much it earns, and it hasn't charted on any store's Top Grossing.

- The influencer's follower count wasn't available (Instagram requires login).

- Unverified whether the early good reviews came from test groups or people the developer knows.

- The product name, developer, and address are all personal identifiers; no funding or team background found.
