Discord turned off screen sharing in Brazil; Salinha, built by one person, hit 12k installs in two weeks

What it is A Brazilian-made voice room for small friend groups: free HD screen sharing, watching YouTube together, listening to music together, and remotely playing on a friend's PC. Works on web, Windows, and Android.

Why it took off Starting 2026-08-17, Discord couldn't do screen sharing or video in Brazil, and a big crowd went looking for alternatives fast. Salinha gives HD for free, then gets users to recruit: "Chat with a real friend for 10 minutes and we'll give you 30 days of membership."

CHow you could follow it Don't build a fourth Discord alternative in Brazil. Copy the playbook instead: watch for cases where a major platform gets a feature shut off in a country by regulators, and within a week or two ship a local-language, zero-setup, free alternative. Pair it with a "X down?" search page, creator partner codes, and invite rewards tied to real usage, and build child safety in from day one.

Grade C: the demand comes from the ban, Discord could come back any time, and daily installs have already dropped from 1,800 to 340. Brazil already has an older, bigger Go Live, the product's yearly fee of R$3 barely makes money, and it sits in the regulatory spotlight. Worth learning the playbook, not worth copying the product. In 2026 August, Brazil's regulator ordered Discord to turn off live streaming and screen sharing, and as of November it still hasn't come back. A Brazilian sole proprietor's Salinha filled the gap, bundling "voice rooms for friend groups + free HD screen sharing + watching YouTube together + remotely playing a friend's PC" into one local alternative. Two weeks after listing, it got about 12k Google Play installs. The demand came from the ban, not from anything the app created itself. Below: how it caught these users, where the money comes from (almost nowhere), who it's competing with, and what this means for you.

A tabletop game host's Friday night

In 2026 October 18, Charles Corrêa, a programmer living in Porto Alegre, published a post on his RPG blog that opens with a Friday night: "You and your friends gather on Discord to play games… then, boom! Screen sharing cuts out, the voices turn into robots, and your friend's video looks like it's from 2003 years ago." He recommended moving to Salinha, calling it "100% Brazilian-made," able to run tabletop games, watch YouTube together, and remotely control a friend's PC. The post ended with a link carrying his personal invite code and the line "add me on Salinha to play together." The same day, he posted the same content on Instagram.

He wasn't the only one. Across Brazilian Portuguese X, Instagram, and TikTok, posts reading "Looking for a Discord alternative? Try Salinha" appeared in late October, many with invite links. Those links carry a reward system built into the product, covered below.

What happened to Discord in Brazil

In 2026 August 12, Brazil's National Data Protection Authority (ANPD), following a case in which a teenager was pushed toward self-harm in a closed Discord group, ordered Discord to shut off live streaming and video as a precaution. From August 17, Discord disabled Go Live, screen sharing, and video calls for Brazilian users (per Discord's official blog and help center). On September 25, the ANPD rejected Discord's request to restore them (Folha). As of November 3, O Globo was still reporting that the restoration request had been rejected by the enforcement department, with the board to decide in the end.

The result: a sudden flood of Brazilian users who suddenly couldn't use something they used every day. What they wanted was simple: watch shows or see each other play games with friends or partners, and run tabletop sessions. Posts in Brazil's Reddit community like "Is screen sharing coming back? I just want to draw while talking with everyone" were common. On TikTok in August 22, a video titled "Discord down? Here are some alternatives" got about 600k views. The demand was ready-made, and it was urgent.

What Salinha is

The developer, Fystec, is a sole proprietorship (MEI) registered by Brazilian Samuel Nogueira Gomes. It launched on Google Play in mid-October 2026, with a web version, a Windows version (Microsoft Store, listed around 10-19), and a Linux version; on iPhone, it works only through the web. The homepage's pitch is "get your crew into the room," with these features:

  • Each group has an always-on voice room; tap in and you're already talking;
  • Screen sharing at 720p to 4K, up to 144 fps, with computer audio. The site says "Free forever. Some apps charge you above 720p, right? 👀", a jab at Discord Nitro;
  • Watching YouTube together: "Whoever added the video controls it… someone saw an ad? The video waits until everyone resumes together";
  • Listening to music together, and a tabletop-game mode;
  • "Play on a friend's PC": up to 4 people, one controller each, each playing from their own home. The host chooses whether to grant controller only, keyboard and mouse, or full access, essentially a built-in Parsec;
  • "Runs on a 2015-year-old PC."

Technically it's all peer-to-peer over WebRTC. Servers only make the introduction and relay traffic when a direct connection fails (São Paulo, Florida, and Europe added from 11-05). That means the bandwidth for HD screen sharing is mostly paid by users themselves, so "free 4K" isn't a money-losing promise for them.

How many installs, and is it still growing?

The charts are Brazil-only: in the free Communication chart 10-29, it climbed from #55,11-01 to #39,11-06 and then fell to #74; in the Communication top-grossing chart, starting 10-31 it sat between #56 and #59.

The peak has passed, and it's declining. Also, Play is only part of it: its main use is the web and the Windows app on PCs, and how many people use it there is invisible from outside.

Where users come from

A wave of X buzz. Brazilian news aggregator quenty put it in its "trending" section in late October 29, headlined "Salinha draws attention with free 1440p screen sharing, becoming a Discord alternative." It collected 28 X comments, about a third positive and about a fifth critical. Positive ones included "Let's move over, the old one only did 720p", "My computer is terrible and it still runs smoothly", and "Built-in Parsec is a big plus." Critical ones included people saying "Three accounts suddenly started pushing this website." The timing lines up with the fastest installs, 10-29 to 11-01. I couldn't find which post first set it off.

Small creators and partner codes. Besides the tabletop host above, PC hardware creator @letechpc posted on TikTok in November 2: "Looking for a Discord alternative? I'm trying Salinha.live" (under 11-06 1,000 views). On Instagram, @minutotechpro wrote "almost exactly Discord, but faster and simpler." The terms of service say some creators' "partner codes" give new users 60 days of trial. So these recommendations most likely come with incentives; whether anyone was paid directly to promote it, I don't know.

Invite referrals, written into the terms. New users get 30 days of Salinha+. After that, "watch YouTube together, listen to music together, play on your own PC from a phone, lend your PC to a friend" requires Salinha Pass or Salinha+. To get Pass, you recruit people: each new account you invite that actually talks in voice for 10 minutes earns the inviter 30 extra days, with no cap. This ties "bring real friends in" to "keep using the good features yourself." On TikTok, ordinary users were posting their personal invite-code links straight in videos.

Search landing pages. Around early October 26, it built pages like "Discord can't share screen? Use Salinha," "Share your screen with sound," and "Play on a friend's PC," targeting searches like "alternativa ao Discord."

Existing users moving over. Before the Play listing, it already had a web version and downloadable installers from its site. The /android page tells old users to uninstall the old package and reinstall the Play version. Some of the first few days' 3,000 installs on Play were people moving over from those.

No evidence of ad spending found.

Where the money comes from: almost none

Salinha+ R$3 a year. Per-group boost packs on web and desktop are R$3 a month, and R$3.45 on Play. Payments go through Pix or bank cards (InfinitePay), bypassing the Google Play cut.

So don't take the No. 56 top-grossing rank at face value: Brazil's Communication top-grossing chart has a very low bar, and at this price, paying feels more like "supporting it." Revenue scale is inferred to be very small; the developer hasn't disclosed it. What it's chasing now is spread through friend groups, not monetization.

Who it's competing with

CompetitorsWhat it isCompared with Salinha
DiscordPlay 700M+ installsIn Brazil, screen sharing and video are gone, and HD requires Nitro. Salinha fills that gap, and the gap shrinks once Discord comes back.
Go Live (by Nem Tudo)Built by Brazilians, on Play 2026-09-18Also built around the ban, one month before Salinha. Play installs about 19k, 7 days +4,800 (third-party estimate), best rank #89 on the free Communication chart. No sign-up, open a room with one link. No groups, no watch-together, no remote PC play, no in-app purchases.

A pile of similar small web projects from the same periodPersonal projects that popped up in OctoberA few hundred to a few thousand views on TikTok, with less buzz.

Bottom line: plenty of others jumped on the same wave, and in Brazil there's an earlier, bigger one called Go Live. The demand came from the ban hitting everyone at once. Salinha won on a fuller feature bundle, group relationships, and invites that grant membership days. It caught up to Go Live's month-plus numbers within two weeks of launch and is more likely to retain users.

Where the risk is

  • The window can close any time. Discord keeps appealing and is negotiating a settlement with the Brazilian government. If ANPD lifts the restriction, the "Discord alternative" demand will shrink sharply. Daily installs have fallen from 1,800 to 340, so the heat is already fading.
  • It could get hit by the same blade. On Nov 3, O Globo reported that after Discord was restricted, some extreme groups moved to smaller, less-watched platforms. An app called Root was used to livestream a violent attack on a 14-year-old girl, and prosecutors are now going after the operators of such platforms. A one-person operation, open to 14-year-olds, pitched as "the server stores no content" voice and video rooms, is a regulatory target in Brazil today, not a safe harbor.
  • Can one person handle it? Commenters already question whether the code was AI-written and whether support can keep up. Others criticize peer-to-peer for exposing IP addresses.

If it were you

C: worth learning from, not worth copying. The window was opened by a platform event: demand came from Discord being shut off, Brazil already had two local players splitting it, rivals' paywalls didn't make them money, and it shrinks as soon as Discord returns. Jumping into Brazil now as a fourth "Discord alternative" is too late.

The playbook is what's worth taking. The week a big platform has a feature switched off by regulators in one country, users go looking for replacements in bulk. Whoever can ship a local-language, zero-config, free alternative within one or two weeks, backed by "X is down? Use Y" search pages and short videos, catches the first wave.

Who it suits: small teams that already have mature WebRTC or real-time audio/video code and can ship a localized version within a week; people who follow regulatory news from different countries.

Who it doesn't suit: anyone wanting to enter Brazil now (too late, Go Live and Salinha are ahead); anyone hoping to make money from it (users of this kind of substitute are forced to switch and will go back once the original returns, so willingness to pay is low); anyone who can't carry content moderation and minor-protection liability.

How to do it: watch for events where a big platform has a feature restricted in a given country (minor protection, data protection, blocking orders), and launch within a week of the event. Use peer-to-peer to push bandwidth costs close to zero, and turn rivals' paid features into your free selling point. Build age limits, reporting, and cooperation with law enforcement from day one, since the wind here is regulation itself.

How to acquire users: copy Salinha's approach: tie invite rewards to real usage (the invitee must talk for 10 minutes to count), grant membership days with no cap; give local small creators partner codes so they can post "I'm trying it" with the invite link; put "X is down?" straight in the landing page title.

Deadline: there's no fixed one, it depends on the event. After the next event, you have one to two weeks to ship. A month late, and like Salinha after Go Live, you'll be chasing with a better product.

Signs you've read it wrong: (1) after Discord restores screen sharing in Brazil, Salinha's Play daily installs still hold at several hundred a day and its chart rank doesn't drop, which would mean it has become a product users choose on their own, and the category itself (the living room for a friend group) is worth building, not just riding the event; (2) Salinha discloses revenue or launches a clearly pricier paid tier that sells, showing real willingness to pay behind the low price; (3) conversely, if Salinha itself is named by Brazilian regulators, it means this kind of product carries more risk than reward in Brazil.

Where users come from
  • Verified platform event (Discord's Brazil video ban): ANPD ordered it on 08-12, Discord 08-17 disabled screen sharing and video, and 09-25 ANPD rejected the restoration request. Salinha's website directly compares "other apps charge beyond 720p," and has a "Discord won't share screens? Use Salinha" landing page.

Salinha (live.salinha.app): why it showed up

In one line: an app built by a Brazilian indie developer (Fystec = Samuel Nogueira Gomes's MEI sole-proprietor registration) offering "friend-group voice rooms + free high-quality screen sharing + watch YouTube / listen to music together + remote play on a friend's PC." It took off on a platform event: starting 2026-08-17, Discord in Brazil was ordered by ANPD to shut off Go Live, screen sharing, and video calls, and as of November had not been restored. Salinha positioned itself as "Brazil's local Discord screen-sharing alternative," spread organically through users and small creators on X, Instagram, and TikTok, and added invite-for-membership-days virality, reaching about 12k Play installs in two weeks.

1. Data (our database + store page)

  • Play installs (googleplay library app_day / app_day_ext, AppstoreSpy estimates): 10-27 daily adds about 17,10-28, cumulative 3,387; 10-29 to 11-01 daily adds 1,100–1,800 (cumulative 9,313); 11-02 about 970,11-03, about 950,11-04/05, dropped to about 340/day; 11-05 cumulative 11,913. 7 days of new adds total 6,239. The peak has passed, and it's declining.
  • Charts (chart_rank, Brazil only): Communication free chart 10-29 #55 → 11-01 #39 (best) → 11-06 #74; top grossing chart on 10-31 in 56–59. The bar for Brazil's Communication top grossing chart is low, and pricing is very low (see below), so a high grossing rank doesn't imply meaningful revenue.
  • Store page (2026-11-06 pt_BR): 4.7 stars, 84 ratings, "10 mil+", has in-app purchases, rated 14+. The library lists app.released = 2026-10-13 (the data card says 10-19).
  • There's also a Windows version (Microsoft Store 9NR02RT0W4ZC, listed about 10-19), a Linux version, and a web version; iPhone only gets the web PWA. Play installs are only part of the users; PC web / Windows is the main use case.

2. Why it took off

Timing: Discord's video features in Brazil were shut off

  • On 2026-08-12 ANPD, as a precautionary measure, ordered Discord to stop Go Live and other livestream / video features (G1 2026-08-12, gov.br ANPD announcement, BBC). Starting 08-17, Discord disabled screen sharing and video calls for Brazilian users (Discord blog "A letter to the Discord community in Brazil", help center article 42704051358359).
  • On 2026-09-25 ANPD rejected Discord's request to restore livestreaming (Folha 2026-09-25); at the end of September a court also required Discord to do age verification (Conjur 2026-09-30). As of early November, merchant and media pages still said "still suspended" (kosmi.io/alternativa-ao-discord-brasil, quenty 2026-10-29).
  • As a result, a large group in Brazil who just wanted to watch shows, watch each other game, or run tabletop sessions with friends or partners suddenly lost their tools. Reddit r/InternetBrasil had threads like "Any recommendations for Discord livestream alternatives?" and "Screen sharing is gone, how are you sharing now?"; on TikTok, @ismalakoi's "Discord CAIU! Here are a few alternatives" (2026-08-22.6M views). The demand was ready-made and urgent.

Acquisition: going viral on X + small creators + invite virality + SEO

  • Creator / small account endorsements:
    • RPG game master and programmer Charles Corrêa (@mestrecharlescorrea)10-18 promoted it on Instagram and his blog rpg.charlescorrea.com.br, calling it "an alternative to Discord" and mentioning "quest and reward systems" with "links and invite code in bio." This looks like a partner or referral-code promotion.
    • Lê Tech Consultoria PC Gamer(@letechpc)11-02 posted "Looking for a Discord alternative? I'm trying Salinha.live" on TikTok, about 3,000 views; the same post on Facebook got 2.1K views.
    • Instagram @minutotechpro posted a reel saying "almost exactly Discord, but faster and simpler."
    • TikTok users are posting links with their personal invite codes (@cassianofrance 11-03:salinha.live/?c=…#add=…).
    • Comments collected by quenty question "three accounts suddenly showing up to push this site," which suggests something close to coordinated promotion. Whether there is paid promotion is unverified.
  • Invite referrals (hard-coded in the product, confirmed): under the terms, new users get 30 days of Salinha+. After that, features like "watch YouTube together / listen to music together / play your own PC from your phone / lend your PC to a friend" require Salinha Pass or Salinha+. For each new invited account that actually completes 10 minutes of voice chat, the inviter gets +30 days of Pass, with no cap. There are also "partner codes": some content creators' codes grant 60 days of trial, which is the incentive behind creator promotion. There was also an early "founder slot" that granted permanent Salinha+.
  • SEO: they built landing pages like "Discord can't share the screen? Use Salinha" (10-26), /compartilhar-tela, and /jogar-no-pc-do-amigo, targeting search terms like "alternativa ao Discord" and "compartilhar tela com som" (Exa indexing date 10-26).
  • Migration of existing users: the /android page says "If you previously downloaded the APK from the website, please uninstall it and switch to the Google Play version." The web and APK users existed before the Play listing, and part of the 3,000 installs in Play's early days came from that migration.
  • Ads: no evidence of ad buying found (our ad library only tracks products on its list, so not finding it doesn't mean it didn't happen).

Why people stay and pay

  • Retention runs on "groups": each group has an always-on voice room, and friendships are locked in there. The invite reward requires 10 minutes of real voice time, so the people brought in are real friends, not farmed accounts.
  • The paywall is so low it barely registers as money: Salinha+ at R$3/year; group-level Turbo on web and PC at R$3/month, and R$3.45/month on Play. Payment is via Pix or card through InfinitePay, bypassing Play's cut. So paying feels more like "supporting it" or "buying a cosmetic." Its 56th place on the Brazilian communication Top Grossing chart reflects the low bar in that category, and the revenue scale is very small.
  • The cost structure can support being free: voice, screen, and text all run on WebRTC P2P, with servers handling only signaling (Cloudflare). TURN relay is used only when connections fail (Oracle Cloud in São Paulo, MixelNodes in Florida), and starting 11-05 a room server on European Contabo was added (see the privacy policy). Bandwidth costs for high-definition screen sharing are largely borne by users. That is why it can make "1440p/144fps free" a selling point, head-on against Discord Nitro's "paid above 720p."

KSF Screen, CLYRO, KozaChat, and othersWeb2026-10Very small (hundreds to thousands of TikTok views)Personal projects in the same wave of "Discord alternatives," with weaker distribution

Bottom line: many people are doing the same thing. In Brazil alone, at least Go Live came earlier and got bigger. Salinha is not the only one.

4. Differentiation

  1. It builds out the "living room" of a friend group: an always-on voice room for the group, a couch-style interface, watch YouTube together (the video waits for everyone when an ad plays), listen to music together, "play a friend's PC" with built-in Parsec-style remote play (up to 4 people, one controller each), and Modo Mesa for tabletop RPGs. Single-purpose tools (Go Live, Kosmi) only solve "share my screen." Positive posts on X specifically cited "native Parsec" and "smooth even on a weak PC."
  2. Free high quality: 1440p/144fps with system audio, directly challenging Nitro's paywall.
  3. Privacy and low cost from P2P: servers don't store content. This is a selling point in Brazil, where public sentiment is focused on regulating "child protection," but some critics say it exposes IP addresses.
  4. Localization: "100% Brazilian tech," natural Portuguese, Pix payments, and R$3/year pricing.

Is differentiation why it took off? Only partly. The demand came from the Discord ban, and in the same wave Go Live reached 19k installs without those differentiators. Salinha's differentiators (more features, group relationships, invites that trade for membership days) determine whether it can keep people and grow through referrals within this wave, not where the demand came from. The bundled features and invite mechanics let it catch up in two weeks to a level Go Live took over a month to reach.

5. Visibility / copycats

  • Visibility: it's spreading within small circles. Micro-influencers on Portuguese-language X, Instagram, and TikTok are talking about it, and a news aggregator ran a "viral" piece (quenty 10-29). No major outlets (TecMundo, Tecnoblog, etc.) have covered it, no TrustMRR listing or founder revenue posts exist, and the English-speaking community doesn't know about it.
  • Copycats: none specifically copying Salinha have been spotted so far. Similar products from the same period (Go Live, KSF Screen, etc.) were prompted by the same ban, not by Salinha.

6. What to borrow

  • Platform regulation events = ready-made demand: when a major platform disables a feature in a country, quickly ship a local, zero-config, free alternative, then publish "X isn't working? Use Y" SEO pages and short Portuguese videos.
  • Invite rewards tied to real usage: an invitee counts only after 10 minutes of voice chat, with rewards paid as +30 days of membership and no cap. Partner codes give 60 days, turning creators into promotion bait.
  • Use P2P to push marginal cost close to 0, so "free HD" can be a selling point that holds up over time.
  • Extremely low pricing, local payments (Pix + InfinitePay) to bypass store fees, and growth through group relationships first, with monetization secondary.

7. Uncertain

  • When Discord restores video in Brazil. Once it does, Salinha's source of demand shrinks sharply. Daily installs have already dropped from about 1,800 to about 340, and its chart rank is slipping.
  • Who posted the X post that set off the spike, and whether there was paid promotion or inflated engagement (some users questioned "several accounts suddenly pushing it together").
  • User numbers for the web and Windows versions, and real scale beyond Play.
  • Stability and moderation capacity of a one-person operation. Users are already questioning vibe coding and customer support. The platform is also in the middle of Brazil's regulatory push around minors' protection, so it could be under scrutiny itself.
  • Paying users and revenue: at R$3/year, the total is most likely very small.
