A meditation app that only times you when your eyes are closed, and the top spot is a monk: Thailand's nak collected 1,000 ratings in three months, powered by the founder's own TikTok
What it is A meditation app that only times you while your eyes are really closed, with an otter-raising game layer, cards, streaks and a leaderboard. Free, with a premium membership at 99 baht a month.
Why it took off The founder is a Thai Buddhist philosophy creator with 120K followers. He built and posted it on his own account. One breathing video hit 3.03M views in August. "Timer only runs with eyes closed" made the leaderboard, and the "top spot is a monk" joke spread through Thai media.
BHow you could follow Swap "verified self-discipline minutes + animal raising + leaderboard" into countries where big players haven't localized (Indonesia, Myanmar, Sri Lanka and so on), or into other habits like plank, waking early. This only works if you or a partner have a matching content account and post as you build.

nak is a timer built by a small Bangkok studio. The front camera checks whether you're really closing your eyes and stops the clock when you open them. Wrapped around it is an otter that evolves into a Naga king, plus cards, streaks and a leaderboard. It launched in August with only Thai and English, and three months later it ranked in the top three meditation apps on the Thai App Store by rating count, behind only Calm and Headspace. Anyone can copy the mechanic, and others built it first without it taking off. nak worked half because of the product and half because of the founder's 120K-follower philosophy and Buddhism account. Anyone who wants to follow can borrow the mechanic and the localization approach, but first they need to work out where their traffic comes from.
"Someone sat for 1,086 minutes, and when you click in, it's a master"
In October, a Thai user on X reposted a screenshot: "Someone made a meditation app, and it sat at number one for 11 days with 1,086 minutes of sitting time. Everyone got curious and clicked into the account. It's a master. Hahaha, who can compete with that." The screenshot came from Palapol Chobisara, founder of nak. (Oct 25)
1,086 minutes is about 18 hours, or an average of an hour and a half a day with eyes closed. The meme was quickly picked up by Thai gaming and tech media: Sheapgamer's Instagram post got 9,235 likes, Extreme IT posted on Facebook, and on Oct 28 MGR Online posted a video to its TikTok account with 3.28M followers, getting 92K views and 7,030 likes (TikTok, 11-06).
In the days that followed, nak's cumulative installs on Google Play jumped twice: 10-31 gained 655,11-03 and 1,799. On the Thailand App Store, its ratings 11-03 brought in 17 new ones in a single day, versus the usual one to eight.
The joke wasn't planned. It grew out of the mechanic itself. Only "eyes closed counts" makes meditation time rankable, and once it's rankable people get curious who's on top.
What it is
The first line of the store page reads: "Sit on a floating island with a little otter." Open it and you get a timer running from 1 minutes to 1 hours. Prop up your phone and the front camera checks on-device whether your eyes are closed, and the clock only runs when they are. The store description is blunt: "No more guessing whether you really sat for ten minutes."
The timer is wrapped in a game layer:
- In Thai, "นาก" (otter) and "นาค" (naga) sound the same, so your otter evolves all the way into a Naga king. There are 31 nak forms and 234 cards, and you draw one each time you finish 5 minutes of sitting.
- There are daily streaks and tasks, and seasonal ranking tiers named after Buddhist cosmology ("human realm 24 hours → heaven realm 70 hours → emptiness 200 hours").
- You can claim territory on a world map.
- Sign in with LINE, Apple or Google in one tap. There's also a web version.
The app is free with no ads. The paid tier is nak pass, 99 baht for 30 days in the Thai store (about $3). It gives double points, unlimited mode, and 40 messages a day with the AI nak. The website says 15% of revenue goes to a stray dog foundation.
Thai App Store reviews show who it's hitting. One user wrote in Oct 27: "I've tried meditating for years and never stuck with it. This app made me happy. The otter is so cute, I want to open it every day." They even dedicated the merit to the dev team at the end. Another in Oct 18: "I only ever scroll my feed, but with this I can sit still longer." The complaints are mostly about battery drain. A three-star review in Nov 2 said "the phone gets so hot I'm scared the battery will blow up," and someone in Oct 11 said the battery drops fast. The camera stays on the whole time. That's the cost of how the mechanic works.

Comparing Thai App Store rating counts side by side (11-06): Forest 17,438, Calm 4,383, Headspace 2,002, Insight Timer 1,463, nak 1,021, Finch 369. Insight Timer built its count over more than a decade in Thailand; nak reached seventy percent of it in three months.
There's another side too: on both stores its chart position has dropped from the teens to the seventies, and the October surge is fading. It's not in the top 40 of the Thai Health top-grossing chart, so revenue is probably small (inference).
Where the traffic comes from
Mostly the founder's own account. Palapol's TikTok @tententch has 120K followers and 5.89M likes. He normally posts about philosophy, Buddhism and AI, and also jokes. In April he even posted a video of himself ordaining at a forest monastery. His followers already care about meditation and Buddhism, and the app link sits in his profile.
The day before launch he posted a video of himself chanting scriptures, 290k views. On Aug 22 a clip titled "Am I breathing right?" hit 3.03M views and 210k likes, and that same day he added a "link in bio" post. On Aug 29 Thai outlet Spacebar ran a feature saying nak quickly charted in the Thai store's Health & Fitness top list after launch.
He then turned the product-building process itself into content: Aug 25 "4 days +500", 110k views; Aug 26 "Can also cheat", followed three days later by "We now have AI catching cheaters"; 9 and October nearly one post a day covering new versions, adding background music, adding voiceover, "Only one otter has its eyes open in the app". Most get one to ten thousand views. In between are pure philosophy posts: one in Oct 14 at 300k, and a quote compilation in Nov 1 at 537k (TikTok, 11-06).
Second, the joke grew out of the mechanic itself: the monk at the top of the leaderboard, which media picked up.
Third, small-account seeding. On TikTok there are small-account reviews with a few hundred to over a thousand views, and posts on Instagram and Lemon8. They all make the same point: "the camera checks whether you really closed your eyes" and "made by Thais, free, and cute."
No sign of paid acquisition. The install curve rises and falls with content spikes, unlike sustained paid buying.
Who it's competing with
| Product | Scale | Compared with nak |
|---|---|---|
| Insight Timer | Play 11.9M installs; Thai iOS 1,463 ratings | The largest free meditation timer. It only checks that you pressed start, doesn't verify anything, and isn't localized. |
| Calm / Headspace | Play 70.6M / 42.5M | English guided courses plus subscription, reached the Thai top-grossing chart. nak doesn't do courses, only timing, and is free. |
| Forest | Play 49.8M; Thai iOS 17,438 ratings | The forefather of gamified focus. It's about putting the phone away, not meditation. |
| Finch | Play 16.6M | Pet-raising self-care, same approach as nak's otter companionship, with no verification. |
| Sit: Meditation Timer (India) | iOS 2026-05 launch, US store 0 ratings | Also detects eyes closed and stillness on-device, three months before nak. No gamification, no localization, no distribution. |
The "camera verifies eyes closed" idea wasn't invented by nak; Sit came first. The difference is that nak turned the mechanic into a game, wrapped it in Thai culture, and had people distributing it. Sit shows that a mechanic alone means nobody knows about it. I haven't seen any copycats, and almost no one in the English world discusses it (90 posts on X in the last 0 days).
If it were you
One-line verdict: the mechanic is worth copying, but you have to change the country or the habit, and bring your own traffic. Copying a plain eyes-closed timer will most likely just make you the next Sit.
Who it suits: people who have a content account in a religious or practice community, or small teams that can recruit creators like that; people who know a market big players haven't localized, such as Indonesia, Malaysia (chanting, prayer), Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Cambodia (Theravada Buddhism), or Vietnam.
Who it doesn't suit: people with no content channel who plan to rely on organic store traffic or pure paid ads. The meditation market is held by Calm, Headspace and Insight Timer, and nobody searches for a new timer. Anyone hoping for big money should also be realistic: nak hasn't entered the Thai top-grossing chart in three months, and subscriptions cost only 99 baht a month. This looks more like a small, well-liked business with modest revenue (inference).
How to do it: two routes. One is to change the market: keep the "eyes-closed timing + animal evolution + leaderboard" formula and swap in local cultural motifs, for example chanting timers and prayer streaks for Indonesia, and Theravada practice terms for Sri Lanka and Myanmar, while plugging into local national apps for login. The other is to change the behavior: find a self-discipline habit where people can't tell if they really did it, and use the camera or a sensor to turn it into a comparable number, such as planks, waking early, vocabulary review, or standing meditation. Bring battery drain down first, since the most common complaints in nak's reviews are the phone overheating and draining fast.
How to get users: copy nak's playbook and post on the founder's or a partner creator's account as you build. Share "4 days, 500 more people", share cheaters and how you catch them, share who's on top. Each iteration becomes one video, and "the timer stops when you open your eyes" can be explained in a single frame. Launch the leaderboard early, because the story of who's at the top is the best free material you have.
When to move: nak is currently only in Thai and English and hasn't gone global. Aim to establish yourself in another country before the first half of 2027; once nak or a big player makes "eyes-closed verification" standard, a reskin won't be enough.
Signs you've misread it: ① nak's chart position keeps falling out of the top 150 on the Thai free Health chart and its ratings stop adding more than a handful a day, meaning it was just a spike and the mechanic didn't keep people; ② nak launches its own Indonesian or Vietnamese version and enters the local Health chart, so the market-change route has already been taken by it; ③ Calm, Headspace or Insight Timer adds "eyes-closed verification."

Why nak — meditate with an otter (nak.polyme.co) took off
Research date 2026-11-06. Data sources: googleplay / appstore libraries (2026-10-28 to 11-06), iTunes lookup, TikHub, Jina search and page text.
One line
A small Bangkok studio, POLYME DOT, built a meditation timer: the front camera checks on-device whether your eyes are actually closed, and only counts time while they are. It's wrapped in gamification: an otter named nak evolves into พญานาค (Naga King, a pun on nak), card collection, streaks, league rankings, and claiming territory on a real map. It took off mainly because the founder is a Thai TikTok philosophy/Buddhism creator with 120k followers, who built and posted publicly from his own account, plus a meme that spread on its own, "the #1 leaderboard player turned out to be a monk," which Thai media then reposted.

Side-by-side (Thai App Store rating count, appstore library 11-06): Forest 17,438, Calm 4,383, Headspace 2,002, Insight Timer 1,463, nak 1,021 (3 months since launch), Finch 369. Three months in, its rating count has reached about 70% of what Insight Timer accumulated in Thailand over 17 years, and it ranks behind only Calm and Headspace in meditation. Both stores' chart positions fell from the low teens at the end of October to 70+, suggesting the August and late-October waves are fading and it hasn't reached steady organic growth. Installs came in waves that match the content spikes below.
2. Competitors
| Product | Platform | Launched | Scale | How nak differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Insight Timer | iOS/Android | 2009/2010 | Play 11.9M installs; Thai iOS 1,463 ratings | The largest free meditation timer and guided library globally; it only checks that you pressed start, with no verification and no localized packaging |
| Calm / Headspace | iOS/Android | 2012–2014 | Play 70.6M / 42.5M | Guided courses plus subscription; Thailand reaches the grossing chart. nak doesn't do courses, only timing, and is free. |
| Forest: Stay Focused | iOS/Android | 2014 | Play 49.8M; Thai iOS 17,438 ratings | The originator of gamified focus (growing trees); it's about "don't touch your phone," not meditation, and doesn't verify closed eyes |
| Finch: Self-Care Pet | iOS/Android | 2021 | Play 16.6M | Pet-style self-care. nak's "companion animal that sits with you + evolution" is the same path, but Finch doesn't do meditation verification |
| Sit: Meditation Timer (INFINITE-VARIABLE, India) | iOS | 2026-05-22 | US store rating 0 | Also uses Apple Vision to check on-device for closed eyes, head posture, and a still face, plus an accelerometer for a "presence" score. It predates nak but has no gamification, no localization, and no distribution, so almost no one uses it. |
| Local Thai timers, such as "เสบียงบุญ" | iOS/Android | Not verified | Small, with only sporadic reviews on Lemon8 | Just a Buddhist timer, with no verification or social features |
| Apps from Plum Village, Dhamma.org, and other religious organizations | iOS/Android | Around 2018 | Medium | Guidance and legal content, non-commercial |
Bottom line: "the camera checks closed eyes before counting" is not unique to nak (Sit came earlier), but nak is the only one that turned it into a product, paired it with gamification and local culture, and reached over a thousand ratings in one country. No copycats found yet.
3. Growth: where users came from
① The founder's own TikTok account (confirmed, the main channel). Founder Palapol Chobisara, TikTok @tententch ("เต้น tententch"), 120k followers, 5.89M total likes, bio "ปรัชญา x AI / the app for settling your mind is in the link" (TikHub 11-06). This account already posted philosophy, Buddhism, AI, and memes. In April he also posted about ordaining and entering a forest monastery (#บวช #วัดป่า), and his audience overlaps naturally with "meditation / Buddhism" viewers. His posting rhythm around launch (TikHub post list):
- 08-05 video reciting scripture, 290k views (teaser the day before launch); 08-10 "How to use nak" 23k.
- 08-22 "Is my breathing method right?" 3.03M views, 210k likes, and on the same day he posted "link in bio" (22k views) and "nak takes over Bangkok."
- 08-25 "Day 4 +500" 110k views, publicly sharing growth; 08-26 "Use it until you don't need it #nak" 190k views; same day "you can also cheat" 110k, followed by 08-29 "We have AI catching cheaters." He turned product iteration itself into content (build in public).
- Almost every day from 9 to October, the nak posts went out: version updates, added guidance audio, added voiceover, "who is nak actually for?". Views mostly landed between 1,000k and 12k; "meditation isn't just sitting there with your eyes closed" hit 10-18 45k; and a single philosophical quote got 11-01 535k.
- 08-29 Spacebar reported that nak "quickly charted in the Thai App Store Health category after launch," right after the 08-22 viral video.
② Self-spreading meme and secondary media reposts (confirmed). The founder posted a video of "Day 11 #1 on the leaderboard, sat 1,086 minutes (about 18 hours), turns out it's a monk (หลวงพี่)." The meme was reposted by Thai game and tech media: Sheapgamer's IG post (9,235 likes), Extreme IT's FB post, someone on X retold it (10-25), and MGR Online's TikTok (3.28M followers) made a video with 10-28 that drew 92k views and 7,030 likes. ManagerGame also posted. In the following days Play installs jumped once (10-31 +655, 11-03 +1,799), and iOS ratings rose 10-30 +14, 11-03 +17, well above the usual 1–8 per day, which matches the timing. Earlier, 08-29 had a Spacebar feature article and a FB post.
③ Local creators and everyday users recommending it (confirmed, small scale). On TikTok, small accounts like orange_dairy (08-30) and diarywithmada (09-06, "a Thai-made meditation app, free, very cute") posted reviews with hundreds to over a thousand views. IG and Lemon8 had review posts, all about how "the camera checks whether you really have your eyes closed." The data card also mentions a Thai illustrator or blogger who promoted it in August and October (2,900 likes), and that the brand exhibited at Character Fest Thailand 2025 (not individually verified).
④ Paid acquisition: no evidence found. Ad libraries don't track it, and installs rose in bursts following content spikes, not like steady paid acquisition.
⑤ Login and retention design. One-tap login with LINE / Apple / Google (LINE is Thailand's national app). A card is unlocked every time you sit for 5 minutes (234 cards total, 31 kinds of nak); daily tasks; seasonal rankings ("Human realm 24h → Heaven realm 70h → Void 200h", named after Buddhist cosmology); on the world map you can claim territory and take other players' points; a web version on the site means no install needed.
4. Why it took off
- The founder brings a matching big account: a Thai philosophy / Buddhism / AI creator with 120k followers. In the month around launch, one breathing video hit 3.03M views, and the download link sits in the bio. Cold-start cost was close to zero.
- "Only counts time with eyes closed" is itself a hook you can film: one shot explains it (open your eyes and the timer stops), and it naturally raises cheating, anti-cheat, and leaderboard talk. The "monk tops the board" meme grew out of this mechanic on its own, and media were willing to repost it.
- The cultural packaging is precise: "นาก (otter)" and "นาค (Naga)" are homophones in Thai, so the otter evolves into the Naga King; realm names come from Buddhist cosmology; donations go to stray dogs, which fits the Thai habit of earning merit (ทำบุญ); LINE login. In a country where everyone has some experience of sitting meditation, but the meditation app market is held by English subscription products like Calm and Headspace, it's the first "Thai-made, free, fun" option.
- Free, no ads, cheap to pay (99 THB a month), good word of mouth (iOS rating 4.91 stars), so ratings accumulate quickly.
5. Differentiation
- Mechanic: verify closed eyes while timing, turning "how long I sat" into a number you can compare and rank. That's the first time meditation could go on a leaderboard and become gamified. Sit built the same mechanic and didn't take off, which shows the mechanic alone isn't enough.
- Local culture plus gamification: the Naga pun, Buddhist-realm seasons, merit donations, LINE, Thai-language content. This layer is what the big international players and India's Sit don't have.
- Was it distribution or product?: both, but distribution matters more. The mechanic and packaging gave it clip-worthy, shareable material, but the founder's TikTok account is what turned that material into installs. Without that account, it would likely have ended up like Sit, with no users.
6. How many people know about it now
Chatter stays within Thailand: Thai media (Spacebar, MGR Online, Sheapgamer, Extreme IT) covered it, and some creators reviewed it, but English-speaking media are nearly silent (x-radar: 90 days, 0 posts). It isn't on TrustMRR, and the founder hasn't shared revenue. It's not in the Thai App Store's top 40 grossing Health chart (appstore library 11-06), so revenue is likely small.
7. What others can learn
- "Verifiable effort" plus leaderboards: turn a self-discipline behavior that's hard to prove (meditation, vocabulary study, waking early, planks) into a number verified by camera or sensor, and you can add rankings, leagues, and anti-cheat, with every step filmable as short video.
- Small country plus local cultural motifs: in a category where big players only offer English subscription products, make a free, fun version in the local language, religion or custom, and wordplay. Indonesia (Islamic recitation and prayer), Vietnam, Myanmar, and Sri Lanka (Theravada Buddhism) could all be copied this way.
- Build in public on the founder's own account: post "Day 4 +500", cheating and anti-cheat, version updates; every iteration becomes a piece of content.
8. Still unclear
- The install curve from August to late October isn't in the libraries (Play starts from 10-29, iOS from 10-28), so how many downloads the 08-22 viral video drove can't be measured; iOS download volume can only be roughly inferred from the rating count.
- nak pass conversion and revenue are unknown; the relationship between the $4.99 in-app purchase on Play and the 99 THB on the website is unverified.
- The exact publish date of the original "monk tops the leaderboard" video is unverified (reposts clustered between 10-25 and 10-28).
- Can it go beyond Thailand? Only EN/TH languages, US store has 8 ratings, no international push yet; both stores' charts are sliding, so whether the buzz fades depends on whether follow-up content keeps it going.
